Abstract. Introduction: We explored trajectories of pain intensity and depressive symptoms over the first 24 months of the pandemic in people with low back pain. Methods: This longitudinal study was conducted alongside the Quebec Low Back Pain Study. Starting in April 2020 and every 3 months until July 2022, 291 participants completed an online survey. Group-based trajectory modeling was used to identify patterns of pain intensity and depressive symptoms. Onset outbreak characteristics were then put in relation with trajectory groups using multivariate logistic regression. Results: The analysis revealed 5 trajectories of pain intensity and depressive symptoms, respectively. The pain trajectories were stable mild (n = 17, 5.8%); stable moderate (n = 103, 35.4%); stable severe (n = 81, 27.8%); U-shape (n = 24, 8.3%), and inverted U-shape (n = 66, 22.7%). The trajectories of depressive symptoms were stable none (n = 58, 19.9%); stable very mild (n = 61, 21.0%); stable mild (n = 85, 29.2%); stable moderate (n = 59, 21.7%); and severe slightly improving (n = 24, 8.3%). Pre-COVID everyday/nearly everyday pain, average pain intensity, and widespread bodily pain were predictive of pain trajectory groups. Higher pre-COVID depression, acute stress disorder, and lockdown measures-related stress were associated with moderate/severe depressive trajectories. Discussion: Our findings indicated relative stability of pain and depressive symptoms among participants during the COVID-19 pandemic but also highlighted subgroups of people who experienced temporary deterioration or improvement over the first months of the pandemic that then reverted back to baseline levels. Modifiable risk factors were identified before the onset of the pandemic, which could give preventive measures in targeted populations.

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) remains a significant global health concern, with a growing recognition of its impact on young adults, particularly young female adults. Although gender-related factors, defined as a social construct that encompasses 4 distinct dimensions (gender roles, gender identity, gender relations, and institutionalized gender) are undoubtedly relevant across age groups, young female patients with ACS face specific challenges and disparities in outcomes, compared to other populations. This narrative review examines the role of gender-related factors—specifically, gender roles, gender identity, gender relations, and institutionalized gender—in influencing objective and subjective ACS outcomes in young female patients. In the 5 articles identified, the objective outcomes included hospital readmission, “door-to-electrocardiography” time, and coronary atherosclerosis progression. Subjective outcomes, such as physical and mental functional status, quality of life, physical limitations, and vital exhaustion, were also examined. Being employed, which is a gender role, emerged as a protective factor against hospital readmission. Gender identity factors such as depression and stress were correlated with negative outcomes, and anxiety influenced “door-to-electrocardiography” times. Institutional factors, including income disparities, affected readmission likelihood. Strong social support decreased physical limitations post-ACS, whereas financial challenges and lower education negatively impacted quality of life and vital exhaustion. These findings underscore the intricate interplay of gender dimensions in shaping ACS outcomes among young female patients. Integrating these insights into clinical practice and research can enhance care, mitigate disparities, and foster improved cardiovascular health in this vulnerable population. Résumé: Le syndrome coronarien aigu (SCA) demeure un problème de santé préoccupant à l’échelle mondiale, avec une reconnaissance croissante de ses conséquences chez les jeunes adultes, plus particulièrement les jeunes femmes adultes. Les facteurs liés au genre, définis comme un construit social à quatre dimensions distinctes (les rôles liés au genre, l’identité de genre, les relations de genre et le genre institutionnalisé) sont indéniablement d’une grande importance dans tous les groupes d’âge, mais les jeunes patientes atteintes d’un SCA font face à des disparités et des défis particuliers à l’égard des résultats de santé par rapport à d’autres populations. La présente synthèse narrative propose un examen de l’influence des facteurs liés au genre (plus particulièrement les rôles liés au genre, l’identité de genre, les relations de genre et le genre institutionnalisé) sur les issues objectives et subjectives du SCA chez les jeunes patientes. Dans les 5 articles retenus, les issues objectives incluaient la réadmission à l’hôpital, le temps écoulé entre l’arrivée à l’hôpital et la réalisation de l’électrocardiographie et l’évolution de l’athérosclérose coronarienne. Les issues subjectives, comme le statut fonctionnel physique et mental, la qualité de vie, les limitations physiques et le syndrome d’épuisement, ont également été examinées. Être employé, qui est un rôle de genre, est apparu comme facteur de protection contre la réadmission à l’hôpital. Des facteurs liés à l’identité de genre, comme la dépression et le stress, étaient corrélés à des issues négatives et l’anxiété était liée au temps écoulé entre l’arrivée à l’hôpital et la réalisation de l’électrocardiographie. Les facteurs liés aux institutions, y compris les disparités de revenus, influençaient la probabilité de réadmission à l’hôpital. La présence d’un bon réseau social était associée à de plus faibles limitations physiques après le SCA, alors que les problèmes financiers et un faible niveau d’éducation avaient une influence néfaste sur la qualité de vie et le syndrome d’épuisement. Ces résultats font ressortir les interactions complexes entre les différentes dimensions du genre qui façonnent les issues du SCA chez les jeunes patientes. L’intégration de ces renseignements dans la pratique clinique et dans la recherche scientifique pourrait permettre d’améliorer les soins, de limiter les disparités auxquelles font face ces patientes et de favoriser une meilleure santé cardiovasculaire au sein de cette population vulnérable.

Objective Virtual care for chronic conditions has seen uptake due to COVID-19. Evaluation of virtual models is important to ensure evidence-based practice. There is a paucity of research in the use of virtual care for management of chronic back disorders. The objective of this study was to evaluate effectiveness of a team-based virtual care model for back disorder assessment where a physical therapist uses virtual care to join a nurse practitioner and patient in a rural Saskatchewan, Canada community. Methods Sixty-four rural adults with chronic back disorders were randomly allocated to receive either: (1) team-based virtual care ( n = 24); (2) care from an urban physical therapist travelling to community ( n = 20); or (3) care from a rural nurse practitioner ( n = 20). The team-based care group involved a nurse practitioner located with a rural patient, and a physical therapist joining using virtual care. The physical therapist alone and the nurse practitioner alone groups received in-person assessments. Groups with a physical therapist involved had follow-up treatments by in-person physical therapy. Outcomes over six months included pain, disability, back beliefs, satisfaction, quality-adjusted health status and management-related costs. Results There were no significant differences for pain, disability, back beliefs and satisfaction between groups. The average cost per patient for implementing in-person physical therapist assessment ($135) was higher compared with the team over virtual care ($118) and NP care ($59). Conclusion Primary outcomes were not different by group. Physical therapist alone was more costly than other groups. Future research should include more participants, longer follow-up time and refined cost parameters. Background Medical cannabis has been legal in Canada since 2001, and recreational cannabis was legalized in October 2018, which has led to a widespread increase in the accessibility of cannabis products.Aims This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of cannabis use among adults living with chronic pain (CP) and investigate the relationship between age and cannabis use for CP management.Methods A cross-sectional analysis of the COPE Cohort data set, a large Quebec sample of 1935 adults living with CP, was conducted. Participants completed a web-based questionnaire in 2019 that contained three yes/no questions about past-year use of cannabis (i.e., for pain management, management of other health-related conditions, recreational purposes).Results Among the 1344 participants who completed the cannabis use section of the questionnaire, the overall prevalence of cannabis use for pain management was 30.1% (95% confidence interval 27.7–32.7). Differences were found between age groups, with the highest prevalence among participants aged ≤26 years (36.5%) and lowest for those aged ≥74 years (8.8%). A multivariable logistic model revealed that age, region of residence, generalized pain, use of medications or nonpharmacological approaches for pain management, alcohol/drug consumption, and smoking were associated with the likelihood of using cannabis for pain management.Conclusions Cannabis is a common treatment for the management of CP, especially in younger generations. The high prevalence of use emphasizes the importance of better knowledge translation for people living with CP, rapidly generating evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of cannabis, and clinicians’ involvement in supporting people who use cannabis for pain management.

Although the effectiveness of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs in secondary prevention is well-recognized, there is a lack of studies exploring the potential of mobile health to enhance educational interventions within CR. The objective is to assess the impact of a structured WhatsApp-assisted health educational intervention, in conjunction with the usual care, compared to the usual care alone among participants enrolled in a CR program. The trial will recruit 32 participants enrolled in a CR program, who will be randomly assigned to a structured WhatsApp-assisted health educational intervention plus usual care or usual care alone group. The intervention will span 4 weeks, with assessments at baseline, 4 weeks, and 3, 6, and 12 months. The primary outcome measure is the cardiovascular risk factors knowledge score. Secondary outcomes include physical activity levels, anxiety and depression, and quality of life. Expected results include improved knowledge of cardiovascular risk factors, increased physical activity levels, and better mental health outcomes in the intervention group. Additionally, an enhancement in the overall quality of life is anticipated. These findings are expected to underscore the value of integrating mHealth with traditional CR methods, potentially shaping future approaches in chronic disease management and prevention.

BackgroundStudies exploring long COVID condition (LCC) in low- and middle-income countries are scarce. Further characterization of LCC patients experiencing activity limitations and their associated healthcare use is needed. This study aimed to describe LCC patients’ characteristics, its impact on activities, and associated healthcare use in Latin America (LATAM).ParticipantsIndividuals who (cared for someone or) had COVID-19 and could read, write, and comprehend Spanish and lived in a LATAM country were invited to complete a virtual survey. Sociodemographic characteristics, COVID-19 and LCC symptoms, activity limitations, and healthcare use.ResultsData from 2,466 people from 16 countries in LATAM were analyzed (females = 65.9%; mean age of 39.5 ± 53.3 years). 1,178 (48%) of the respondents had LCC symptoms (≥3 months). These were more likely to have COVID-19 earlier in the pandemic, were older, had no COVID vaccines, had more comorbidities, needed supplementary oxygen, and reported significantly more COVID-19 symptoms during the infectious period. 33% of the respondents visited a primary care provider, 13% went to the emergency department, 5% were hospitalized, 21% visited a specialist, and 32% consulted ≥1 therapist for LCC symptoms mainly extreme fatigue, sleep difficulties, headaches, muscle or joint pain, and shortness of breath with activity. The most consulted therapists were respiratory therapists (15%) and psychologists (14%), followed by physical therapists (13%), occupational therapists (3%), and speech pathologists (1%). One-third of LCC respondents decreased their regular activities (e.g., work, school) and 8% needed help with activities of daily living (ADLs). LCC respondents who reduced their activities reported more difficulty sleeping, chest pain with activity, depression, and problems with concentration, thinking, and memory, while those who needed help with ADLs were more likely to have difficulty walking, and shortness of breath at rest. Approximately 60% of respondents who experienced activity limitations sought a specialist and 50% consulted therapists.Conclusions and relevanceResults supported previous findings in terms of the LCC demographics, and provided insight into LCC impact on patients’ activities and healthcare services used in LATAM. This information is valuable to inform service planning and resource allocation in alignment with the needs of this population.

Abstract Background The coronavirus disease 19 (covid-19) pandemic has underscored the need to expedite clinical research, which may lead investigators to shift away from measuring patient-important outcomes (PIO), limiting research applicability. We aim to investigate if randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of covid-19 pharmacological therapies include PIOs. Methods We will perform a meta-epidemiological study of RCTs that included people at risk for, or with suspected, probable, or confirmed covid-19, examining any pharmacological treatment or blood product aimed at prophylaxis or treatment. We will obtain data from all RCTs identified in a living network metanalysis (NMA). The main data sources are the living WHO covid-19 database up to 1 March 2021 and six additional Chinese databases up to 20 February 2021. Two reviewers independently will review each citation, full-text article, and abstract data. To categorize the outcomes according to their importance to patients, we will adapt a previously defined hierarchy: a) mortality, b) quality of life/ functional status/symptoms, c) morbidity, and d) surrogate outcomes. Outcomes within the category a) and b) will be considered critically important to patients, and outcomes within the category c) will be regarded as important. We will use descriptive statistics to assess the proportion of studies that report each category of outcomes. We will perform univariable and multivariable analysis to explore associations between trial characteristics and the likelihood of reporting PIOs. Discussion The findings from this meta-epidemiological study will help health care professionals and researchers understand if the current covid-19 trials are effectively assessing and reporting the outcomes that are important to patients. If a deficiency in capturing PIOs is identified, this information may help inform the development of future RCTs in covid-19. ObjectivesDeveloping solutions to optimize care trajectories (CareTs) requires examining patient journeys through the health care system. This study aimed to describe CareTs among people living with arthritis and evaluate their association with self-reported health outcomes.MethodsAnalyses were conducted using the TorSaDE Cohort (n = 102,148), which connects the 2007 to 2016 Canadian Community Health Surveys (CCHS) with Quebec administrative databases (longitudinal claims). CareTs of participants living with arthritis according to CCHS (n = 16,631), over the two years before CCHS completion, were clustered using state sequence analysis (months as a time unit). CareT group membership was then put in association with self-reported outcomes (pain intensity and interference, self-perceived general and mental health).ResultsThe analysis revealed five CareT groups characterized predominantly by: (1) arthritis-related visits to a specialist (n = 2,756; 16.6%), (2) arthritis-related emergency department visits (n = 2,928; 17.6%), (3) very high all-cause health care utilization and arthritis-related hospitalizations (n = 1,570; 9.4%), (4) arthritis-related medical visits to general practitioners and specialists (n = 2,708; 16.3%), (5) low all-cause health care utilization (n = 6,669; 40.1%). Multivariable results revealed that CareT group membership was associated with higher levels of pain interference (CareT group #3 vs. #5: OR: 1.4, 95%CI: 1.1–1.8) and fair/poor self-perceived general health (CareT group #1 vs. #5: OR: 1.551, 95%CI: 1.319–1.824; #2 vs. #5: OR: 1.244, 95%CI: 1.062–1.457; #3 vs. #5: OR: 1.771, 95%CI: 1.451–2.162; #4 vs. #5: OR: 1.481, 95%CI: 1.265–1.735).DiscussionSate sequence analysis is an innovative method of studying CareTs and valuable for making evidence-based decisions taking into account inter- and intra-individual variability.

ObjectivesUnderstanding gender differences in chronic pain (CP) outcome research is essential to optimal treatment delivery. This study explored the associations between gender identity, gender roles, and the number of non-life-threatening pain medication adverse effects reported as severe by people living with CP.MethodsThe analyses were conducted using the COPE Cohort, a dataset generated through a web-based recruitment of adults with CP. Participants were asked how they identified themselves (women, men, unknown, unspecified) and gender roles were measured using the Bem Sex-Role Inventory (subgroups were formed applying the median split method). Pain medication adverse effects were assessed using a standardized checklist (none/mild/moderate/severe). A zero-inflated Poisson model was used to assess gender identity, gender roles and their interaction as potential predictors of the number of pain medication adverse effects.ResultsA total of 1,343 participants reported using pain medications. Adjusting for potential confounders, both gender identity (men vs. women: ß = −0.32, p = 0.0024) and gender roles (androgynous vs. undifferentiated: ß = 0.26, p = 0.0030) were associated with the number of pain medication adverse effects reported as severe, and they interacted with each other. The stratified analysis by gender roles showed that women reported a greater number of severe adverse effects than men among those classified as masculine and androgynous.DiscussionAlthough we are unable to confirm whether the associations can be explained by differences in the experience or in the reporting of effects, gender identity and gender roles should both be explored when studying pain medication adverse effects.

Introducción: Moodle es una tecnología de información y comunicación de aprendizaje ampliamente utilizada en todo el mundo y se ha utilizado poco para fortalecer las competencias ciudadanas. Objetivo: Mejorar las competencias ciudadanas a través de una estrategia pedagógica en la plataforma Moodle en estudiantes registrados en los cursos formativos de práctica clínica/administrativa de fisioterapia de la Universidad de Santander, Bucaramanga, Colombia. Métodos: Se realizó un diseño pretest-postest. La intervención educativa consistió en una actividad pedagógica disponible en línea las 24 horas del día, en Moodle durante 10 semanas. Una muestra de 41 estudiantes cumplió con un cuestionario antes y después de la intervención educativa, que consistió en 25 preguntas distribuidas en cinco dimensiones: constitución política, multiperpectivismo, pensamiento sistémico y reflexivo, argumentación y ética. El puntaje total por dimensión osciló entre 0 a 100. Resultados: El puntaje promedio de conocimiento fue 60,8 ± 12,9 en la prueba previa y 65,1 ± 15,4 en la prueba posterior (p = 0,0665). Abstract. Introduction:. Numerous definitions of acute low back pain (aLBP) exist. The use of different definitions results in variability in reported prevalence or incidence, conflicting data regarding factors associated with the transition to chronic LBP (cLBP), and hampers comparability among studies. Objective:. Here, we compare the impact of 3 aLBP definitions on the number of aLBP cases and participants' characteristics and explore the distribution of participants across definitions. Methods:. A sample of 1264 participants from the Quebec Low Back Pain Study was included. Three definitions of aLBP were used: (1) not meeting the National Institutes of Health (NIH) cLBP definition (“nonchronic”), (2) pain beginning 5 years of pain than in the other definitions. Half the participants meeting the “acute” definition and one-third of participants meeting the “new episode” definition were also classified as cLBP based on the NIH definition. Conclusions:. Our results highlight the importance of the definition used for aLBP. Different definitions influence the sample size and clinical profiles (group's characteristics). We recommended that cohort studies examining the transition from aLBP to cLBP ensure that the definitions selected are mutually exclusive (ie, participants included [aLBP] differ from the expected outcome [cLBP]).

Background: Less than one-third of people with epilepsy will develop drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). Establishing the prognosis of each unique epilepsy case is an important part of evaluation and treatment.Most studies on DRE prognosis have been based on a pooled, heterogeneous group, including children, adults, and older adults, in the absence of clear recognition and control of important confounders, such as age group. Furthermore, previous studies were done before the 2010 definition of DRE by the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), so data based on the current definitions have not been entirely elucidated. This study aimed to explore the difference between 3 definitions of DRE and clinical predictors of DRE in adults and older adults.Methods: Patients with a new diagnosis of epilepsy ascertained at a Single Seizure Clinic (SSC) in Saskatchewan, Canada were included if they had at least 1 year of follow-up. The first study outcome was the diagnosis of DRE epilepsy at follow-up using the 2010 ILAE definition. This was compared with 2 alternative definitions of DRE by Kwan and Brodie and Camfield and Camfield. Finally, risk factors were analyzed using the ILAE definition.Results: In total, 95 patients with a new diagnosis of epilepsy and a median follow-up of 24 months were included. The median age of patients at the diagnosis of epilepsy was 33 years, and 51% were men. In the cohort, 32% of patients were diagnosed with DRE by the Kwan and Brodie definition, 10% by Camfield and Camfield definition, and 15% by the ILAE definition by the end of follow-up. The only statistically significant risk factor for DRE development was the failure to respond to the first anti-seizure medication (ASM).Conclusion: There were important differences in the percentage of patients diagnosed with DRE when using 3 concurrent definitions. However, the use of the ILAE definition appeared to be the most consistent through an extended follow-up. Finally, failure to respond to the first ASM was the sole significant risk factor for DRE in the cohort after considering the age group.

Abstract Background Chronic back disorders (CBD) are a global health problem and the leading cause of years lived with disability. The present study aims to examine overall and specific trends in CBD in the Canadian population aged 18 to 65 years. Methods Data from the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS), a cross-sectional study, from 2007 to 2014 (8 cycles) were used to calculate CBD prevalence across gender, age, geographical area (urban/rural and ten provinces and northern territories), and physical activity levels. CBD was defined in the CCHS as having back problems, excluding fibromyalgia and arthritis, which have lasted or are expected to last six months or more and that have been diagnosed by a health professional. Prevalence of CBD using survey weights and associated 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated yearly using balanced repeated replications technique. Trend tests were calculated using joinpoint regressions; ArcGIS software was used for mapping. Results Age-standardized CBD prevalence in 2007 and 2014 were 18.9% (95% CI = 18.4;19.5) and 17.8% (95% CI = 17.2,18.4), respectively. CBD prevalence was consistently higher in women, older age groups, rural dwellers, and people classified as inactive. Objective: This paper aims to evaluate the perception of a university group of teachers about education as a social phenomenon. An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted with a group of university teachers in Bogota, Colombia, in October 2014. A survey was applied in order to evaluate the perception about education as a social phenomenon; the data analysis was performed using SPSS software version 19. The population studied consisted of 60 university professors with an average age of 42.2 ± 14.4 years, and with 6.15 years of teaching practice. Male gender was predominant with 53% (n = 32). There were statistically significant differences in the results related to the concept of education (p = 0.05 to 0.00) and to the following items: “Do you consider that investment in public education is enough?” (p = 0.02), “Is education a political model?” (P = 0.03); in aggregate age, “Is access to higher education conceived by the Colombian government with social concern?”, “Does the environment influence the Colombian student’s education development?” (p = 0.02 to 0.00); it was the same case for the interpretive sociology for the item “Are patterns of educational assessment adequate in the country?” (p = 0.04). In conclusion, it was found that there are differences in teachers’ conceptions about the construction of education as a social phenomenon.f education as a social phenomenon by finding differences between the conceptions of it in teaching.

Introducción: Los programas de rehabilitación cardiaca promueven cambios de estilo de vida y disminuyen la recurrencia de enfermedad y mortalidad en un 25%. No obstante, la tasa de asistencia a éstos varía entre el 7,5 al 29%, y cerca del 40 al 50% de los usuarios abandonan el tratamiento en forma prematura. Objetivo: describir las barreras encontradas en quienes participaron o no en programas de rehabilitación cardíaca después de ser sometidos a una revascularización percutánea. Métodos: estudio de corte transversal, realizado en treinta sujetos, a quienes se les aplicó la escala de barreras para la rehabilitación cardiaca, que usa preguntas tipo Likert, donde los puntajes más altos indican mayor percepción de barrera para participar en un programa de rehabilitación cardíaca. Resultados: Las mayores barreras por ítem fueron: «yo encuentro al ejercicio fatigante y/o doloroso», con un promedio de 2,86, seguido por «Yo hago actualmente ejercicio» y «Yo no sabía de la rehabilitación cardiaca» con un promedio de 2,73. Objetivo: Determinar la asociación entre calidad de vida relacionada con salud (CVRS) e incontinencia urinaria (IU) en una población de mujeres con exceso de peso del área urbana de Bucaramanga, Colombia. Materiales y métodos: Estudio analítico de corte transversal realizado entre marzo y mayo de 2012. La muestra estuvo conformada por 63 mujeres seleccionadas aleatoriamente, mediana de edad 46 años, con un mínimo de 18 y un máximo de 65 años, 76 % con sobrepeso y 24 % con obesidad. Se evalúo la CVRS con el SF-36 y el cuestionario de calidad de vida para mujeres con síntomas del tracto urinario bajo (ICIQ-FLUTSqol), la incontinencia urinaria se evaluó mediante la forma corta del cuestionario modular creado por el grupo Consulta Internacional sobre Incontinencia (ICIQ-IU Short Form). Resultados: La prevalencia de IU global fue de 39,7 %, IU esfuerzo 28,6 % e IU mixta 11,1 %. No se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en las 8 dimensiones del SF-36 entre mujeres con y sin IU. La dimensión con menor puntaje en las mujeres con IU fue vitalidad (63,4). El puntaje de CVRS evaluado con el cuestionario ICIQ-FLUTSqol obtuvo una mediana de 27 con un mínimo de 20 y máximo 52. Conclusión: En mujeres con exceso de peso no se observaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en las 8 dimensiones de la CVRS al comparar las mujeres con y sin IU.

Objetivo: Evaluar los efectos de un programa de entrenamiento funcional de músculos core dirigido a las mujeres con fibromialgia. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó un ensayo cuasiexperimental de tipo antes y después de una intervención durante 20 semanas, con frecuencia de 3 días/semana y una duración de 60 minutos cada sesión. En un grupo único de 8 mujeres, se evaluaron los cambios en la fuerza muscular, dolor, calidad de vida relacionada con la salud y el nivel de actividad física. Resultados: Hubo aumento en las repeticiones de la prueba de flexión de tronco, el tiempo en las pruebas puente lateral derecho e izquierdo y puente en prono. Todas las características del dolor disminuyeron y según el S-FIQ hubo disminución en el cansancio matutino, la rigidez y la ansiedad. También los Met´s/minuto-semanas aumentaron después de la intervención. Conclusión: Estos datos sugieren que el programa de entrenamiento funcional de músculos core es eficaz en el aumento de la fuerza muscular, la modulación del dolor, la optimización de rendimiento funcional, así como el aumento de los niveles de actividad física en mujeres con fibromialgia.

Introducción: Existe poca evidencia que detalle el comportamiento de cada variable espacio-temporal del patrón de carrera utilizando diferentes superficies. Objetivo: Comparar las variables espaciotemporales del patrón de carrera de futbolistas adolescentes en superficie natural y artificial. Método: se realizó un estudio de corte transversal con 18 jugadores de fútbol masculino (edad mediana= 12 años; Rango intercuartílico [RIC] 12-13). Mediante un sistema de medición óptico de 5 metros de longitud se analizó velocidad, aceleración, tiempo de contacto (Tc), tiempo de vuelo (Tv), fase de contacto, fase de apoyo, propulsión, zancada y cadencia. Las valoraciones fueron inicialmente desarrolladas en Superficie Artificial (SA) y 24 horas después en Superficie Natural (SN). Se utilizaron las pruebas Rangos con signos de Wilcoxon para datos pareados y el coeficiente de correlación de Spearman. Introducción: La Escala de Barreras para la Rehabilitación Cardíaca (EBRC) fue diseñada para evaluar las barreras de participación y adherencia de pacientes a programas de rehabilitación cardíaca en el contexto de investigación canadiense. Previamente se evaluó la adaptación cultural y validación de su contenido al contexto colombiano, antes de evaluar su confiabilidad. Objetivo: determinar la consistencia interna y la reproducibilidad prueba – reprueba de la EBRC en población colombiana. Métodos: 30 pacientes (66,6% hombres, edad promedio = 67,0 ± 11,0 años) sometidos a revascularización percutánea en Los Comuneros Hospital Universitario de Bucaramanga, Colombia completaron la escala en dos momentos, con un intervalo de dos meses entre las aplicaciones. Se calcularon los coeficientes Alfa de Cronbach y de correlación intraclase (CCI). Resultados: La consistencia interna de la EBRC versión colombiana fue buena (Alfa de Cronbach = 0,84). El CCI encontrado fue de 0,711 (IC95% 0,423-0,860). Por dominios, la reproducibilidad fue la siguiente: para el factor logístico CCI de 0,76; IC95% 0,56-0,88; para el factor comorbilidades/estado funcional (CCI: 0,73; IC95% 0,51-0,86); para el factor percepción de salud CCI: 0,66; IC95% 0,38-0,83; y finalmente, para el factor conflictos de trabajo/tiempo CCI: 0,56; IC95% 0,29-0,78. El promedio de puntaje por paciente fue de 2,3 ± 0,7 y 2,0 ± 0,7 en la primera y segunda evaluación respectivamente (p = 0,0071). Conclusión: La escala de barreras para la rehabilitación cardiaca tiene una confiabilidad aceptable en población colombiana evaluada. La identificación de barreras mediante esta escala, permitirá desarrollar estrategias para incrementar la participación y adherencia a los programas de rehabilitación cardiaca enfocados en las necesidades reales de los pacientes.

Objetivo: Determinar el conocimiento sobre vivienda saludable en dos barrios de Bucaramanga. Metodología: Estudio descriptivo transversal realizado en 100 padres o acudientes de niños y niñas adscritos a los hogares del Instituto de Bienestar Familiar de los barrios Estoraques y Girardot. Las variables recolectadas fueron sociodemográficas y conocimientos sobre vivienda saludable mediante un cuestionario autodiligenciado creado por los autores. En el análisis estadístico, se aplicaron medidas de tendencia central y de dispersión para las variables cuantitativas o frecuencia absolutas y relativas para las variables cualitativas. Para todo el análisis se consideró un nivel de significancia alpha=0.05. Resultados: Las preguntas que fueron respondidas correctamente en menor proporción fueron: la relacionada con acciones preventivas para evitar accidentes en los niños (Un hogar sin peligros implica tener buenas acciones, de las siguientes acciones cual es la más adecuada) con un 7%; dos relacionadas con el dengue, la primera (de las siguientes acciones para evitar el dengue cual no es la correcta) con un 8% y la segunda (de las siguientes cual no es una opción para protegernos de la picadura de mosquitos) con un 35%; En una escala de 0 a 12 el promedio fue de 6,7± 1,8 y no se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas por edad, sexo y educación previa. Conclusión: Es necesario la realización de programas que permitan aumentar y consolidar conocimientos sobre vivienda saludable, habilitación, adaptación, manejo, uso y mantenimiento de la vivienda y su entorno con seguridad y calidad, al igual que promover una orientación hacia prácticas protectoras para la salud, la promoción de la misma y la prevención de la enfermedades y de accidentes domésticos , al desestimular las actitudes y hábitos que pueden constituir riesgo para la familia y su hogar.

Objetivo: Determinar la seroprevalencia de tamizaje para HTLV y factores asociados a coinfección en donantes voluntarios de sangre de Colombia. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó un estudio de corte transversal retrospectivo inferencial; la población fue de 971 registros de donantes voluntarios de sangre; se calculó prevalencia de HTLV y se calcularon odds ratios (OR). Resultados: El 49,3 % de los donantes estaba entre 18 y 33 años; el 53,4 % era de género femenino; el 44,3 % convivía con una pareja; se observó que la principal coinfección fue sífilis (7,0 %). Se observa una tendencia al aumento de la prevalencia de HTVL entre 2010 (0,23 %) y 2011 (0,24 %) en la sede de proceso de Bogotá. En relación con los factores asociados, se encontró asociación positiva con mayor edad y convivencia con pareja y asociación negativa con régimen contributivo. La regresión de Poisson múltiple mostró que la prevalencia de coinfección es de 2,92 (IC 95 % 1,92-4,45) veces en las personas de 34 a 64 años comparado con los menores de 34 años; asimismo, el régimen contributivo protege de coinfección 0,69 (IC95 % 0,48-0,99) a las personas vinculadas al régimen contributivo comparadas con las del régimen subsidiado. Conclusión: En general, se encontró una proporción importante de donantes con resultados reactivos; se establecieron claramente factores asociados a coinfección y la prevalencia fue mayor que en otros reportes.

Antecedentes: La ocurrencia de PC en países industrializadososcila de 2 a 2,5 casos por cada 1.000 nacidos vivos; la prevalenciade bajo peso al nacer, factores maternos, obstétricos yconsanguinidad han sido determinantes. Esta condición llevaa limitaciones y restricciones en los diferentes roles que puededesempeñar un individuo dentro de la sociedad los cuales puedenser facilitados o inhibidos según los diferentes factores delcontexto en el que se desenvuelve, por lo tanto la condición dedaño físico lleva a una discapacidad.Objetivo. Determinar las características sociodemográficas,antecedentes neonatales, situación de discapacidad y nivel defunción motora gruesa en niños y niñas con parálisis cerebral de2-12 años de Bucaramanga y su área metropolitana.Material y métodos. Se realizó un estudio de corte transversalcon 60 participantes seleccionados por conveniencia. El nivel defunción motora gruesa se evaluó con el Sistema De Clasificaciónde la Función Motora Gruesa (GMFCS). En el análisis se calcularonfrecuencias absolutas y relativas.Resultados. La mayor parte de la población se encontró entre los6 y 12 años (61,6%), el 50% correspondió a género femenino yla mayoría pertenecía al estrato socioeconómico 2 (43,3%) querepresenta la clase baja según la estratificación en Colombia, el56,7% de los niños vivía con ambos padres; el 55% de los hogaresrecibían > 1 y < 2 Salarios Mínimos Mensuales Legales Vigentesy el régimen de salud más común fue el contributivo (65%). Deacuerdo a la clasificación con el GMFCS el 38,3% de los niñosestaban en el nivel V, el 25,0% en nivel I, 16,7% en nivel IV,13,3% en nivel III y el 6,7% en nivel II. Las estructuras corporalesmas afectadas fueron el sistema nervioso central (cerebro) conun 78,3%, seguido por deficiencia en las estructuras para realizarmovimiento (miembros superiores e inferiores) con 20,0%.Conclusión. Se encontró que la gravedad de la función motoragruesa está relacionada directamente con las habilidades funcionales,la necesidad de elementos de ayuda y de cuidador.

En la actualidad el diagnóstico de embarazo gemelar le confiere al binomio madre e hijo características específicas que los convierte en una población de alto riesgo para patologías que comprometen el estado de bienestar fetal como: prematurez, ruptura prematura de membranas, restricción de crecimiento intrauterino, malformaciones congénitas, problemas de entrecruzamiento del cordón, abruptio placentae, distocias de presentación y síndrome de trasfusión feto-fetal. Además de los determinantes de morbilidad materna, los cuales han incrementado su prevalencia según la etiología asociada, ya sean los trastornos de hipertensión asociados al embarazo, sepsis secundario a ruptura prematura de membranas y hemorragia postparto. En tanto así, recobra vital importancia realizar una revisión acuciosa dirigida por ejes temáticos sobre las patologías de mayor prevalencia asociadas al embarazo gemelar. La demanda de sangre hace que la donación sea una actividad constante, por lo cual, conocer la motivación para realizarla, se convierte en determinante para la formulación de estrategias que aumenten los donantes y fortalezcan los programas de la donación. El objetivo de este estudio fue establecer los principales motivos para la donación voluntaria en una población que asistió a un punto de recolección de Bogotá (Colombia). Se diseñó un estudio trasversal descriptivo en una muestra de 500 adultos (28,8 ± 10,4 años), 58% mujeres. La recolección de la información, se realizó aplicando una encuesta. Las variables recolectadas en el estudio fueron edad, sexo, estrato socio-económico, lugar de residencia en los últimos cinco años y principal motivo para donar sangre. Se realizó un análisis descriptivo y uno bivariado, aplicando la prueba chi2. Los principales motivos de la población donante fueron la promoción de la donación (18% IC95% 14,7-21,7) y salvar vidas (14,4% IC95% 11,4- 17,8). Las personas de 25 años o más, donan sangre en mayor proporción por salvar vidas (27,7%), mientras que, los menores de 25 años lo hacen principalmente como hábito saludable (26,9%). Las personas de nivel de estrato socio-económico I y II donan motivados, principalmente, por la promoción de la donación (33,0%), mientras que las de estratos III, IV y V lo hacen por salvar vidas (38,4%). La población de estudio tiene información clara sobre los aspectos que los motivan a realizar la donación voluntaria y altruista, como la promoción de la donación, salvar vidas, entre otras.The demand for blood donation makes it a constant activity, whereby knowing the motivational aspects for its implementation becomes a determinant in the formulation of strategies for the increase of donors and to strengthen the donation programs. The aim of this study was to establish the main motivations for voluntary donation in the population that attended a gathering point of Bogotá (Colombia). A descriptive transversal study was designed with a sample of 500 adults (28.8 ± 10.4 years), 58% female. A survey was done for data collection. The variables used were age, sex, socioeconomic status, residence for the last five years and main motive for blood donating. A descriptive and a bivariate analysis applying the chi2 test were ejecuted. The software used was Stata 11.0. The main motives for donation were the promotion (18% CI 95% 14.7-21.7) and to save lives (14.4% CI 95% 11.4-17.8). People coming from socioeconomic levels I and II donated mainly motivated by the promotion (33.0%) and those from the socioeconomic levels III, IV and V donated mainly to save lives (38.4%). The interviewed population gave clear information about the aspects that motivated voluntarily and willingly blood donation, as to promote more donations and save lives, among others.

Objetivo: Determinar la prevalencia y caracterizar la población en condición de discapacidad del municipio de Los Santos (Santander, Colombia), durante 2010 y 2011. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo aplicando el instrumento de registro "Encuesta a Personas con Discapacidad y su cuidador". Estudiantes de último año de fisioterapia y bacteriología de la Universidad de Santander (UDES), previamente entrenados, recogieron la información mediante entrevista. Se realizó un análisis estadístico descriptivo aplicando medidas de tendencia central y frecuencias absolutas y relativas. Resultados: Se encontraron 108 Personas con Discapacidad (PCD), la prevalencia de discapacidad de esta población fue de 1,3% (IC 95% 1,1-1,6), la vereda con mayor prevalencia fue Los Teres (9,4%; IC95% 5,1-15,5). De las 108 PCD, el 48% corresponde a género femenino y el 47,2% se encuentra entre 15 y 44 años. La estructura corporal con mayor deficiencia fue el sistema nervioso, con un 64,8%, y las actividades de demanda general fueron las más afectadas (57,4%). Los problemas con servicios, sistemas y políticas de transporte, seguro social, salud y educación constituyen el principal facilitador (57, 4%). Conclusión: La discapacidad como problema de salud pública afecta las actividades, participación y desempeño de las PCD, lo cual disminuye su desarrollo individual y sus oportunidades de integración a la sociedad.

ResumenObjetivo: Evaluar la reproducibilidad y el nivel de acuerdo del tiempo en posición sedente evaluado con el IPAQ y el GPAQ. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio de evaluación de tecnologías diagnósticas. Los cuestionarios IPAQ y GPAQ fueron administrados por dos encuestadores a 92 adultos (42.2 ± 13.9 años), en dos oportunidades con un intervalo de tiempo entre 3 y 6 días, en el mismo orden de aplicación establecido aleatoriamente en la primera prueba. En el análisis, se evaluó la reproducibilidad prueba-reprueba de los ítems que miden el tiempo en posición sedente del IPAQ y del GPAQ y la reproducibilidad entre ítems, aplicando el Coeficiente de Correlación Intraclase (CCI (2.1)) y sus intervalos de confianza del 95% (IC95%). El nivel de acuerdo se estableció mediante el método Bland y Altman. Resultados: La reproducibilidad prueba-reprueba para el tiempo en posición sedente fue buena para el IPAQ (CCI: 0.77 IC95% 0.67; 0.84) y muy buena para el GPAQ (CCI: 0.83 IC95% 0.76; 0.89). El acuerdo fue pobre con un promedio de las diferencias de -0.04 h/d (límites de acuerdo: -4.95; 4.9 h/d) para el IPAQ y 0.15 h/d (límites de acuerdo: -4.2; 4.5 h/d) para el GPAQ. La reproducibilidad entre ítems fue muy buena en la primera CCI: 0.81, (IC95% 0.73; 0.87) y segunda prueba CCI: 0.82 (IC95% 0.74; 0.88); el nivel de acuerdo entre ítems fue pobre para la primera -0.54 h/d (límites de acuerdo: -4.7; 3.6 h/d) y segunda prueba -0.6 h/d (límites de acuerdo: -4.9; 4.2 h/d). Conclusiones: La medición del comportamiento sedentario o hipoactividad física mediante los ítems del IPAQ y GPAQ presenta buena reproducibilidad pero pobre acuerdo, lo cual sugiere mejorar la medición de este comportamiento. Objetivo: evaluar la reproducibilidad prueba-reprueba y el nivel de acuerdo entre mediciones de las pruebas 30 seg (30-s) Arm Curl y 30-s Chair Stand en una muestra de adultos mayores de Bucaramanga. Materiales y métodos: se realizó un estudio de evaluación de tecnologías diagnósticas. Ambas pruebas fueron administradas en dos oportunidades por el mismo evaluador a 111 adultos mayores de 59 años (70,4 ± 7,3), con un intervalo de 4 a 8 días. En el análisis se determinó la reproducibilidad prueba-reprueba mediante el coeficiente de correlación intraclase, CCI= 2,1 con sus respectivos intervalos de confianza de 95% (IC 95%). El nivel de acuerdo se estableció mediante el método de Bland y Altman. Resultados: la reproducibilidad prueba-reprueba para el 30-s Arm Curl test fue muy buena, con un CCI= 0,88 y para el 30-s Chair Stand test fue buena,con un CCI= 0,78. Así, el acuerdo fue muy bueno para las dos pruebas de resistencia muscular. Los límites de acuerdo de 95% estuvieron entre -3,8 y 3,2 repeticiones para la prueba 30-s ChairStand y entre -3,1 y 2,8 repeticiones para la prueba 30-s Arm Curl. Conclusión: las pruebas 30-s Arm Curl y 30-s Chair Stand tienen buena reproducibilidad y nivel de acuerdo para evaluar resistencia muscular en adultos mayores funcionalmente independientes.
