Abstract

Water heating is a major energy consumption in the US residential sector. According to the annual energy outlook of the EIA (EIA 2021), the total US national primary energy efficiency of water heating is only 60%. Heat pump water heaters can significantly increase the thermal efficiency of water heating. Electric powered heat pump water heaters are already commercially available in the US. On the other hand, no fuel-fired heat pump water heaters are available, but two are in development, both employ absorption cycle. Thermally driven ejector heat pumps have been discounted for their low efficiency and narrow operating range. In this paper we present performance analysis of a novel ejector heat pump for water heating that overcomes the shortcomings of conventional ejector heat pumps. The heat pump uses binary fluid mixture and active back pressure control. The use of the binary mixture results in high thermal efficiency and the active back pressure control widens the operating range of the heat pump. Two configurations of the heat pump are presented and analyzed. The maximum achievable COP of each was 1.95 and 1.7 at output heating capacities of 5.7 and 6.7 kW, respectively. 4. Increasing Compressed Gas Energy Storage Density Using CO2–N2 Gas Mixture.

Abstract

This paper demonstrates a new method by which the energy storage density of compressed air systems is increased by 56.8% by changing the composition of the compressed gas to include a condensable component. A higher storage density of 7.33 MJ/m3 is possible using a mixture of 88% CO2 and 12% N2 compared to 4.67 MJ/m3 using pure N2. This ratio of gases representing an optimum mixture was determined through computer simulations that considered a variety of different proportions from pure CO2 to pure N2. The computer simulations are based on a thermodynamic equilibrium model that predicts the mixture composition as a function of volume and pressure under progressive compression to ultimately identify the optimal mixture composition (88% CO2 + 12% N2). The model and simulations predict that the optimal gas mixture attains a higher energy storage density than using either of the pure gases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive simulation model for advanced membrane-based heat and mass exchanger (HMX) components which account for three separate fluid streams with complex flow patterns. The model was implemented with various liquid desiccants and their properties (including LiCl, CaCl and ionic liquid (IL)). Preliminary model validation is presented using data from a laboratory prototype absorber. The paper also presents implementation of the model into a sorption system modeling platform and analyzes potential benefit analysis of the HMX component in utilizing the sensible and latent heat removed in space cooling to heat water. The developed model and codes are expected to enable detailed optimization studies and identify novel configurations for the three-fluid HMX maximum performance and cost effectiveness.
