Abstract Background The Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) represented a great risk to public health. In this study, 60 STEC strains recovered from broiler and duck fecal samples, cow’s milk, cattle beef, human urine, and ear discharge were screened for 12 virulence genes, phenotypic and genotypic antimicrobial resistance, and multiple-locus variable-number tandem-repeat analysis (MLVA). Results The majority of strains harbored Shiga toxin 1 (stx 1) and stx 1d, stx 2 and stx 2e, and ehxA genes, while a minority harbored stx 2c subtype and eaeA. We identified 10 stx gene combinations; most of strains 31/60 (51.7%) exhibited four copies of stx genes, namely the stx 1, stx 1d, stx 2, and stx 2e, and the strains exhibited a high range of multiple antimicrobial resistance indices. The resistance genes blaCTX-M-1 and blaTEM were detected. For the oxytetracycline resistance genes, most of strains contained tetA, tetB, tetE, and tetG while the tetC was present at low frequency. MLVA genotyping resolved 26 unique genotypes; genotype 21 was highly prevalent. The six highly discriminatory loci DI = 0.9138 are suitable for the preliminary genotyping of STEC from animals and humans. Conclusions The STEC isolated from animals are virulent, resistant to antimicrobials, and genetically diverse, thus demands greater attention for the potential risk to human.

Abstract Background Hearing is commonly impaired in Behçet’s disease (BD). Also, vestibular abnormalities as well as cochlear function affection have been found. The inflammatory process which leads to BD may be the cause of vestibular frequency audiometry abnormalities in those patients. The aim of this study is to assess hearing and vestibulo-colic reflex in Behçet patients using convential pure-tone audiometry (cPTA), high-frequency audiometry (HFA), and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP). Results This study included 25 patients with BD (group I), whose age ranged from 21 to 45 years, with a mean age of 34.24 ± 7.07 years. The control group (group II) comprised 20 normal adults whose ages are between 21 and 45 years, with a mean age of 30.8 ± 8.02 years. The measured cVEMP parameters which include the mean peak latency of P13 and the mean peak latency of N23 were statistically significantly different between the patients suffering from BD and the control groups. All BD patients had high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) starting from 4 up to 12.5 kHz. The mean thresholds of the audiometry were significantly higher in the diseased group. Conclusion cVEMP testing can be used for the evaluation of the vestibulo-colic reflex in BD patients. The occurrence of hearing loss especially in high-frequency regions is a common finding in patients suffering from BD, and a HFA may be a valuable tool in early exploration of hearing loss in patients with BD.

Lupus nephritis (LN) is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality in patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). This study aims to investigate the possible role of a functional polymorphism in the regulatory region of the monocyte chemo-attractant protein-1 (MCP-1) gene and MCP-1 blood level in the diagnosis of LN and in correlating the MCP-1 blood levels with disease activity. The study included 56 SLE patients and 56 controls. All the SLE patients suffered from LN. An analysis of MCP-1 gene polymorphism by polymerase chain reaction was performed followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis and MCP-1 blood level was determined using the ELISA technique. Calculation of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI) was performed. Serologic tests included the determination of antinuclear antibody (ANA) and anti-double-stranded (ds) DNA antibodies, Complement C3 and C4 levels. A significant increase in the frequency of genotype A/G and a decrease in the frequency of genotype A/A were found among patients with active LN compared to inactive LN. There was a statistically significant difference in the blood level of MCP-1 between LN patients and controls. Also, MCP-1 blood levels were significantly higher in active LN patients than inactive LN. A significant positive linear correlation was detected between MCP-1 blood level and SLEDAI, creatinine, and 24 hours protein in LN patients. These results suggest that an A/G genotype together with the measurement of the blood level of MCP-1 can be a useful tool for detection and follow up of active LN.
