1. Unambiguous detection of mesospheric CO2 clouds on Mars using 2.7 {\mu}m absorption band from the ACS/TGO solar occultations

Abstract

Mesospheric CO2 clouds are one of two types of carbon dioxide clouds known on Mars. We present observations of mesospheric CO2 clouds made by Atmospheric Chemistry Suit (ACS) onboard the ESA-Roscosmos ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO). We analyzed 1663 solar occultation sessions of Thermal InfraRed (TIRVIM) and Middle InfraRed (MIR) channels of ACS covering more than two Martian years that contain spectra of 2.7 {\mu}m carbon dioxide ice absorption band. That allowed us to unambiguously discriminate carbon dioxide ice aerosols from mineral dust and water ice aerosols, not relying on the information of atmospheric thermal conditions. CO2 clouds were detected in eleven solar occultation observations at altitudes from 39 km to 90 km. In five cases, there were two or three layers of CO2 clouds that were vertically separated by 5-15 km gaps. Effective radius of CO2 aerosol particles is in the range of 0.1-2.2 {\mu}m. Spectra produced by the smallest particles indicate a need for a better resolved CO2 ice refractive index. Nadir optical depth of CO2 clouds is in the range 5*10^{-4}-4*10^{-2} at both 2.7 {\mu}m and 0.8 {\mu}m. Asymmetrical diurnal distribution of detections observed by ACS is potentially due to local time variations of temperature induced by thermal tides. Two out of five cases of carbon dioxide cloud detections made by the TIRVIM instrument reveal the simultaneous presence of CO2 ice and H2O ice aerosols. Temperature profiles measured by the Near InfraRed (NIR) channel of ACS are used to calculate CO2 saturation ratio S at locations of carbon dioxide clouds. Supersaturation S > 1 is detected in only 5 out of 19 cases of CO2 cloud layers; extremely low values of S < 0.1 are found in 9 out of 19 cases., Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures. Submitted to Icarus

Abstract

It is experimentally shown that the pressure applied along the twofold symmetry axis of a heterostructure with a wide GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well leads to considerable modification of the polariton reflectance spectra. This effect is treated as the stress-induced decrease of the heavy-hole exciton mass. Theoretical modeling of the effect supports this assumption. Abstract

The article reveals some unresolved issues concerning the processes of planning, organizing, conducting and evaluating university education in modern conditions. The purpose of the study is to clarify what oppositions are currently being maintained, and what needs to be done to address problematic situations. Among the oppositions identified by the author, there are oppositions between the standardization and unification of education, which are opposed by the autonomy of universities and the individualization of the learning process; between thread-group organization of educational process, characteristic of the traditional system of higher education, and building of individual educational trajectory; between pedagogue-centered and student-centered paradigms of higher education; between the traditional system of education (teaching) and electronic learning (e-learning), between the old system of assessing students based on the exams in specific disciplines, and the need to determine the level of formation of competences; between academic and scientific models ofpostgraduate school.The following research methods were implemented: a theoretical method (analysis of scientific literature, legislative and normative documents, teaching materials, internal local acts relating to the organization of the educational activities of the University), interpretation (comprehensive and systematic study of the object of study, comparing different objects of study among themselves, summarizing their theoretical and practical experience, etc.). In the study, based on the identified oppositions in the organization of the educational process at the University - standardization and unification of education, the conclusions were made about the need for thorough and comprehensive analysis of the existing management system of higher education and suggestions for its improvement and bringing into line not only with the requirements of legislative and normative documents regulating activity of the Russian universities, but also taking into account the interests of all the stakeholders interested in the learning outcomes and the preparation of competitive specialists.

47. Monitoring the Effectiveness of Master’s Programs Implementation

Abstract

The paper highlights a mechanism for monitoring the effectiveness of master’s programs implementation. The authors dwell on the experience of M.K. Ammosov North-Eastern Federal University in the developing of such a mechanism. Five main blocks are considered as the monitoring criteria reflecting the effectiveness of educational programs implementation, such as: 1) demand, 2) resource provision, 3) quality control, 4) contingent of students, and 5) employment of educational program graduates. Each criterion contains three main indicators for which points are calculated. On the results obtained from the monitoring carried out using this methodology, the master programs are ranked according to their efficiency, taking into account the total number of points scored on all the criteria units. After analyzing the data obtained, it turns out which block or direction of work has lag in the implementation of educational program and administrative measures are taken to remedy the situation. The outcome of this monitoring should be the improvement of the quality and efficiency of master’s programs implementation at federal university.
