Abstract

Abstract The in vivo-generator radionuclides 140Nd (t1/2 = 3.4 d) and 134Ce (t1/2 = 3.2 d) were used to trace a urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA)-targeting mouse monoclonal antibody, ATN-291, in U87 MG xenograft tumor-bearing mice. ATN-291 is known to internalize on the uPA/uPA-receptor pair, making it an appropriate targeting vector for investigating the fate of in vivo generator daughters on internalizing probes. Ante-mortem and post-mortem PET imaging at 120 h post-injection gave no indication of redistribution of the positron emitting daughter nuclides 134La and 140Pr from tumor tissue (p > 0.5). The lack of redistribution indicates that the parent radionuclides 134Ce and 140Nd could be considered as long-lived PET-diagnostic matches to therapeutic radionuclides like 177Lu, 161Tb and 225Ac when internalizing bioconjugates are employed.

Abstract

Cybersecurity has traditionally been perceived as a highly technical field, centered around hacking, programming, and network defense. However, this article contends that the scope of cybersecurity must transcend its technical confines to embrace a more inclusive approach. By incorporating various concepts such as privacy, data sharing, and ethics, cybersecurity can foster diversity among audiences with varying educational backgrounds, thereby cultivating a richer and more resilient security landscape. A more diverse cybersecurity workforce can provide a broader range of perspectives, experiences, and skills to address the complex and ever-evolving threats of the digital age. The research focuses on enhancing cybersecurity education to attract a diverse audience through the development and testing of a virtual platform on Haaukins (a cybersecurity training platform) designed with features resembling social media for capture-the-flag exercises. The results show that the cyber training platform effectively engages a diverse group of learners, bridging the gap between traditional technical boundaries and the urgent demand for comprehensive cybersecurity competence.

46. Carbon degradation and mobilisation potentials of thawing permafrost peatlands in northern Norway inferred from laboratory incubations

Abstract

Permafrost soils are undergoing rapid thawing due to climate change and global warming. Permafrost peatlands are especially vulnerable, as they are located near the southern margin of the permafrost domain in the zones of discontinuous and sporadic permafrost. They store large quantities of carbon (C) which, upon thawing, may be decomposed and released as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). This study characterises patterns of potential C degradation and mobilisation within an area with sporadic permafrost by evaluating C degradation in three permafrost peatland ecosystems in Finnmark, Norway, under laboratory conditions. Active-layer, transition zone and permafrost samples from distinct cores were thawed under controlled conditions and incubated for up to 350 d under initially oxic or anoxic conditions while measuring CO2, CH4 and DOC production. Carbon degradation varied among the three peat plateaus but showed a similar trend over depth, with the largest CO2 production rates in the upper active layer and the top of the permafrost. Despite marked differences in peat chemistry between the layers, post-thaw CO2 production of permafrost peat throughout the first 350 d reached 67 %–125 % of that observed in samples from the top of the active layer. De novo CH4 production occurred after prolonged anoxic incubation in samples from the transition zone and permafrost, but it was not found in active-layer samples. CH4 production was highest in incubations from thermokarst peat sampled next to decaying peat plateaus. DOC production by active-layer samples throughout 350 d incubation exceeded gaseous C loss by up to 23-fold under anoxic conditions, whereas production by permafrost peat was small. Taken together, the results of our study suggest that permafrost peat in thawing Norwegian peat plateaus degrades at rates similar to those of active-layer peat, while the highest CH4 production can be expected after the inundation of thawed permafrost material in thermokarst ponds.

Abstract

Abstract Background The global strain on Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is reflected in the increasing number of emergency ambulance dispatches. Shorter EMS response times have demonstrated some effect on very specific and rare conditions. It is unknown if the increased number of ambulance dispatches compromises response times. This study aimed to describe trends in emergency ambulance dispatches and response times from 2013 to 2022 in Region Zealand, Denmark. Additionally, it aimed to outline the demographic profile of emergency ambulance patients, including age and comorbidities. Methods Using administrative data from the Region Zealand emergency medical dispatch center, a register-based study spanning from January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2022, was conducted. Data were linked with nationwide registries and priority A (emergency), or B (urgent) ambulance dispatches were included. Trends were examined overall and stratified by catchment areas corresponding to the hospitals with emergency departments in the region. Poisson and ordinal logistic regressions were used to analyze data. Results The study encompassed 678,789 emergency ambulance dispatches, with 55.0% priority A and 45.0% priority B. Among these, 667,788 had a valid personal identification number allowing for further analysis. Within the study population, females comprised 48.5%, while 49.1% of patients were 65 years or more. Overall, 47.5% of patients had no comorbidities, while 7.7% and 44.8% had mild and severe comorbidities, respectively. Emergency ambulance dispatches increased from 56,867 in 2013 to 81,080 in 2022 (143%). Correspondingly, the dispatch incidence rate per 1,000 residents per year increased from 69.2 to 95.5. Stratification by catchment areas revealed significant disparities. The median response time for priority A dispatches increased from 7 min:14 s in 2013 to 8 min:20 s in 2022 and for priority B dispatches from 12 min:23 s to 15 min:6 s. Conclusions From 2013 to 2022, emergency ambulance dispatches both priorities A and B increased in absolute numbers and per 1000 residents per year. Ambulance response times also increased for both priorities during the study period. The study shows regional disparities regarding to the rate of emergency ambulance dispatches and response times indicating challenges in resource distribution in the future for maintaining emergency care standards.
