1. Varying Calcium Abundances in Solar Flares Seen by the Solar Maximum Mission

Abstract

We report on calcium abundance A (Ca) estimates during the decay phases of 194 solar X-ray flares using archived data from the Bent Crystal Spectrometer (BCS) on the Solar Maximum Mission (operational 1980–1989). The abundances are derived from the ratio of the total calcium X-ray line emission in BCS channel 1 to that in neighboring continuum, with temperature from a satellite-to-resonance line ratio. Generally, the calcium abundance is found to be about 3 times the photospheric abundance, as previously found, indicating a “first ionization potential” (FIP) effect for calcium, which has a relatively low FIP value. The precision of the abundance estimates (referred to hydrogen on a logarithmic scale with A (H) = 12), is typically ∼± 0.01, enabling any time variations of A (Ca) during the flare decay to be examined. For a total of 270 short time segments with A (Ca) determined to better than 2.3% accuracy, many (106; 39%) showed variations in A (Ca) at the 3 σ level. For the majority, in 74 (70%) of these 106 segments A (Ca) decreased with time, and for 32 (30%) A (Ca) increased with time. For 79 out of 270 (29%) we observed constant or nearly constant A (Ca), and the remaining 85 (31%) with irregular time behavior. A common feature was the presence of discontinuities in the time behavior of A (Ca). Relating these results to the ponderomotive force theory of Laming, we attribute the nature of varying A (Ca) to the emergence of loop structures in addition to the initial main loop, each with its characteristic calcium abundance.

3. Comparative analysis of the performance of selected machine learning algorithms depending on the size of the training sample

Abstract

The article presents an analysis of the effectiveness of selected machine learning methods: Random Forest (RF), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) in the classification of land use and cover in satellite images. Several variants of each algorithm were tested, adopting different parameters typical for each of them. Each variant was classified multiple (20) times, using training samples of different sizes: from 100 pixels to 200,000 pixels. The tests were conducted independently on 3 Sentinel-2 satellite images, identifying 5 basic land cover classes: built-up areas, soil, forest, water, and low vegetation. Typical metrics were used for the accuracy assessment: Cohen’s kappa coefficient, overall accuracy (for whole images), as well as F-1 score, precision, and recall (for individual classes). The results obtained for different images were consistent and clearly indicated an increase in classification accuracy with the increase in the size of the training sample. They also showed that among the tested algorithms, the XGB algorithm is the most sensitive to the size of the training sample, while the least sensitive is SVM, which achieved relatively good results even when using training samples of the smallest sizes. At the same time, it was pointed out that while in the case of RF and XGB algorithms the differences between the tested variants were slight, the effectiveness of SVM was very much dependent on the gamma parameter – with too high values of this parameter, the model showed a tendency to overfit, which did not allow for satisfactory results.

5. Diagnostic of the temperature and differential emission measure (DEM) based on Hinode/XRT data

Abstract

We discuss here various methodologies and an optimal strategy of the temperature and emission measure diagnostics based on Hinode X-Ray Telescope data. As an example of our results we present the determination of the temperature distribution of the X-rays emitting plasma using a filters ratio method and three various methods of the calculation of the differential emission measure (DEM). We have found that all these methods give results similar to the two filters ratio method. Additionally, all methods of the DEM calculation gave similar solutions. We can state that the majority of the pairs of the Hinode filters allows one to derive the temperature and emission measure in the isothermal plasma approximation using standard diagnostics based on the two filters ratio method. In cases of strong flares one can also expect good conformity of the results obtained using a Withbroe – Sylwester, genetic algorithm and least-squares methods of the DEM evaluation.

Abstract Human enamel is composed mainly of apatite. This mineral of sorption properties is susceptible to chemical changes, which in turn affect its resistance to dissolution. This study aimed to investigate whether metal leakage from orthodontic appliances chemically alters the enamel surface during an in vitro simulated orthodontic treatment. Totally 107 human enamel samples were subjected to the simulation involving metal appliances and cyclic pH fluctuations over a period of 12 months in four complimentary experiments. The average concentrations and distribution of Fe, Cr, Ni, Ti and Cu within the enamel before and after the experiments were examined using ICP‒MS and LA‒ICP‒MS techniques. Abstract

This article examines changes in Polish local press at the turn of the second and the third decade of the 21st Century, directly or indirectly related to the coronavirus pandemic. For years, statistics have been showing declining sales of printed press. This is mainly the case of the general-interest newspapers – national, regional, and local alike. Internet media platforms are increasingly important and often take over the role of the leading local media. Due to their limited reach, local publishers felt the losses from reduced advertising revenue and copy sales even more acutely than national publishers. Local press and small publishing teams struggled to cope with the impact of the pandemic and demand for digitization. So, what will the local press look like in the following years? How will the pandemic change the face of the local press? This study addresses these issues based on findings from desk research, case studies, and content analysis of relevant media. The result of the research is the confirmation of changes in the field of local communication, especially in its channels. The printed press arouses less and less interest among recipients and ceases to function as the fourth estate.

Abstract

On 18 October 2023, the Constitutional Tribunal handed down its second 'revolutionary' verdict in three months on the grounds of property tax (ref. SK 23/19), once again stating the unconstitutionality of the provisions of the law governing it - this time only with regard to a specific interpretation of the provisions. Indeed, the Court found that both the definition of a building and the provisions on property tax rates are unconstitutional to the extent that they would result in the recognition that garages with separate ownership located in residential buildings are to be taxed at the rate for other (higher) buildings and not at the rate provided for residential buildings.

Abstract

With a growing need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, innovative carbon dioxide sorbents are being sought. One of the sorbents being tested is nanoparticle ferric hydrosol (FFH). In parallel with sorbent testing, it is also necessary to test the used sorbent after carbon dioxide capture (FFHCO2) and to develop an optimal method for its processing and management. The research described in this article evaluated the potential use of FFHCO2 in dewatering, coagulation and bioleaching processes. The research results indicate that the basic strategy for dealing with waste FFHCO2 sorbent should be to minimize the amount of waste by volume reduction—dewatering. Recycling of FFHCO2 as an iron waste coagulant or its processing products by bioleaching had no technological justification. It is only proposed to recover the material—iron compounds—if it is environmentally and economically justified.

Abstract

Because COVID-19 has been recognised as one of the most important pandemics in the history of humankind, in recent years many scientists have investigated the effect of the disease on various aspects of mental and physical human health. This article presents a literature review regarding the effect of SARS CoV-2 infection on the symptoms, diagnostics, and treatment of diabetes. It discusses the effect of infection with virus SARS-CoV-2 on the course of type 1 and type 2 diabetes as well as the frequency of occurrence of the disease in patients affected by COVID-19. Moreover, it presents information on the pharmacotherapy and way of providing services by doctors during the pandemic. According to the literature, infection with virus SARS CoV-2 causes a general inflammation of the organisms and numerous metabolic and hormonal disturbances, and therefore affects the course of diabetes. It may lead not only to serious metabolic complications in the course of early diabetes, but also to the development of the disease. It was determined that infection with COVID-19 in diabetes patients (mainly type 2) increases the risk of complications (such as acute respiratory failure, multi-organ failure, and death).

Abstract

Neurological disorders present a wide range of symptoms and challenges in diagnosis and treatment. Cannabis sativa, with its diverse chemical composition, offers potential therapeutic benefits due to its anticonvulsive, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties. Beyond cannabinoids, cannabis contains terpenes and polyphenols, which synergistically enhance its pharmacological effects. Various administration routes, including vaporization, oral ingestion, sublingual, and rectal, provide flexibility in treatment delivery. This review shows the therapeutic efficacy of cannabis in managing neurological disorders such as epilepsy, neurodegenerative diseases, neurodevelopmental disorders, psychiatric disorders, and painful pathologies. Drawing from surveys, patient studies, and clinical trials, it highlights the potential of cannabis in alleviating symptoms, slowing disease progression, and improving overall quality of life for patients. Understanding the diverse therapeutic mechanisms of cannabis can open up possibilities for using this plant for individual patient needs.

38. Modelling the probability of roof fall using digital tools

Information on rock mass characteristics, encompassing the overall quality of the rock masses and various geological parameters, is crucial in mining operations. This data guides the selection of mining techniques and the design of roof control methods to minimize the risk of flaking. However, the lithology of roof rocks is often so variable that predicting their behaviour, especially when disturbed by mining activities, is challenging. The study begins with a detailed review of existing literature on roof fall mechanisms and predictive modelling techniques. It was described the dataset used, which includes geological, environmental, and operational parameters collected from various mining sites. This article outlines a methodology for conducting detailed studies of the lithology of coal seam roof rocks in roadways and longwalls as mining progresses. According to the research, forecasting the extent of roof rock fall during the planning stage of mining operations can inform the implementation of appropriate countermeasures to minimize this phenomenon before exploitation begins, thereby significantly reducing ongoing mining costs. Block modelling and stratigraphic (mesh) modelling were employed to predict the volume of rockfall that could contaminate the ore in the analysed mining plot. In the future, this proposed methodology could be used to analyse the progression of roof falls, estimate the mass of falling roof rocks, and calibrate a system for continuous measurement of ore quality in mine workings.

With the rising demand for mineral resources, efficient deposit management has become a critical challenge in modern mining. This article underscores the significance of geological modeling in coal deposit management, emphasizing the essential role that digital deposit models play across various mine departments. It outlines the methodology for creating geological models, detailing steps such as data digitization, validation, model construction, calibration, and continuous updates. The article examines three specific deposit modelling software programs (Minex, MineScape, and Carlson) highlighting their unique features and suitability for multi-seam coal deposits. The findings include the development of contour maps, structural and qualitative models, and conducting economic analyses. Additionally, the article discusses the importance of modelling tectonic disturbances and creating qualitative maps for effective deposit exploitation planning. It concludes by emphasizing that the integration of information technology with geological expertise is crucial for precise planning and optimization of mining operations, leading to more efficient and sustainable resource management.

Abstract

We employ the differential evolution (DE) method to analyze observations from the Solar X-Ray Monitor on board the Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft. DE belongs to the family of evolutionary algorithms that find solutions using mechanisms inspired by biological processes. This approach enables us to simultaneously calculate the distribution of the differential emission measure and elemental abundances through an iterative process. We establish a model for the emission sources of flaring plasma, incorporating temperature, emission measure, and abundances of eight elements: Mg, Al, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Fe, and Ni, for an M3.9 GOES-class solar flare that occurred on 2021 May 7 (SOL2021-05-07T19:04). Our analysis covers various phases of the flare, determining the evolution of temperature, emission measure, and elemental abundances. Additionally, utilizing data from the Spectrometer Telescope for Imaging X-rays on board the Solar Orbiter, we investigate the evolution of hard X-ray source morphology, source volume, electron density, and thermal behavior of the flaring plasma throughout the event. The results reveal notable variations in elemental abundances between photospheric and coronal values during different flare phases. This emphasizes the significance of elemental abundance information in comprehending X-ray emissions during solar flares.
