Superconducting (SC) tokamak JT-60SA plays an essential role in fusion research and development by supporting and complementing the ITER project, providing directions to the DEMO design activity and fostering next generation scientists and engineers. Since the short circuit incident at the terminal joints of equilibrium field coil #1 during the integrated commissioning (IC) in March 2021, both EU and JA implementing agencies (IAs) have examined how to ensure safe operation of JT-60SA by mitigating the risk of possible discharge occurrence inside the cryostat. Based on the experience of the global Paschen tests, the IAs have established a strategy of risk mitigation measures, which is a combination of (i) reinforcement of insulation, (ii) avoiding unnecessary voltage application to the coil systems and (iii) immediate de-energization of the coils when deteriorated vacuum conditions are detected. Thanks to the considerable efforts of the Integrated Project Team members, the IC restarted in May 2023. After confirmation of the SC state of the coil systems (TF, EF and CS), the coil energization test and the plasma operation phase 1 (OP-1) started. The first plasma was successfully achieved on 23 October 2023 with a limited value of voltage and current applied to the coils. The plasma configuration control was also confirmed with low plasma current and low auxiliary heating power conditions. Based on the IO–F4E–QST collaboration, activities of JT-60SA have been shared with the IO and provided an important lesson for ITER assembly and commissioning, and will provide an outstanding contribution to fusion research at large. After OP-1, maintenance & enhancement phase 1 (M/E-1) starts from January 2024, in which in-vessel components are installed, and heating and diagnostic systems are extensively upgraded to allow a high power heating experiment planned in OP-2. In order to make the best use of JT-60SA, a newly organized JT-60SA experiment team will refine the research plan for the future high heating power operation phase.

The chromosome numbers for seven Italian endemic taxa of Armeria (Plumbaginaceae) are here presented, including three species (Armeria aspromontana, A. garganica, and A. macropoda) for which chromosome data are reported for the first time. Overall, this study confirms the diploid status and the chromosomal stability of Armeria.

Social entrepreneurship is a research topic that has received great attention from academics especially in recent years. However, the results in the literature are far from univocal, for example, there is no clear conceptual delimitation of the term, and it is often analyzed using the same theoretical models of traditional entrepreneurship. With the present study, we have attempted to overcome this problem by analyzing different antecedents, closer to the social and emotional universe, and detached from a male-centric and traditional vision of entrepreneurship, with the aim of understanding social entrepreneurial intentions in higher education. Results obtained from a sample of 962 college students showed that prior experience with social problems (PESP) and empathy (EMP) have a significant and positive impact on social entrepreneurial intention (SEI). Furthermore, social self-efficacy (SES-E), moral obligation (MO), and perceived social support (PSS), in addition to directly influencing SEI, mediated the relationship between PESP-SEI, and the relationship between EMP-SEI. More interestingly, gender (male vs female), but not the different type of study (social sciences vs economics and business sciences), moderated the relationship between EMP-SEI to the benefit of women. Given the importance of social entrepreneurship as an alternative solution to the current economic crisis, these are important results because, on the one hand, they make it possible to overcome the male-female gap that characterizes traditional entrepreneurship, on the other, they underline the need to introduce different constructs closer to the social and emotional sphere into entrepreneurship education programs.

In response to the growing computational intensity of the healthcare industry, biomedical engineering (BME) undergraduate education is placing increased emphasis on computation. The presence of substantial gender disparities in many computationally intensive disciplines suggests that the adoption of computational instruction approaches that lack intentionality may exacerbate gender disparities. Educational research suggests that the development of an engineering and computational identity is one factor that can support students' decisions to enter and persist in an engineering major. Discipline-based identity research is used as a lens to understand retention and persistence of students in engineering. Our specific purpose is to apply discipline-based identity research to define and explore the computational identities of undergraduate engineering students who engage in computational environments. This work will inform future studies regarding retention and persistence of students who engage in computational courses. Twenty-eight undergraduate engineering students (20 women, 8 men) from three engineering majors (biomedical engineering, agricultural engineering, and biological engineering) participated in semi-structured interviews. The students discussed their experiences in a computationally-intensive thermodynamics course offered jointly by the Biomedical Engineering and Agricultural & Biological Engineering departments. The transcribed interviews were analyzed through thematic coding. The gender stereotypes associated with computer programming also come part and parcel with computer programming, possibly threatening a student's sense of belonging in engineering. The majority of the participants reported that their computational identity was "in the making." Students' responses also suggested that their engineering identity and their computational identity were in congruence, while some incongruence is found between their engineering identity and a creative identity as well as between computational identity and perceived feminine norms. Responses also indicate that students associate specific skills with having a computational identity. This study's findings present an emergent thematic definition of a computational person constructed from student perceptions and experiences. Instructors can support students' nascent computational identities through intentional mitigation of the gender stereotypes and biases, and by framing assignments to focus on developing specific skills associated with the computational modeling processes.

Abstract Glioblastoma (GBM), the most common aggressive brain tumor, is characterized by rapid cellular infiltration and is routinely treated with ionizing radiation (IR), but therapeutic resistance inevitably recurs. The actin cytoskeleton of glioblastoma cells provides their high invasiveness, but it remains unclear whether Rho GTPases modulate DNA damage repair and therapeutic sensitivity. Here, we irradiated glioblastoma cells with different p53 status and explored the effects of Rho pathway inhibition to elucidate how actin cytoskeleton disruption affects the DNA damage response and repair pathways. p53-wild-type and p53-mutant cells were subjected to Rho GTPase pathway modulation by treatment with C3 toxin; knockdown of mDia-1, PFN1 and MYPT1; or treatment with F-actin polymerization inhibitors. Rho inhibition increased the sensitivity of glioma cells to IR by increasing the number of DNA double-strand breaks and delaying DNA repair by nonhomologous end-joining in p53-wild-type cells. p53 knockdown reversed this phenotype by reducing p21 expression and Rho signaling activity, whereas reactivation of p53 in p53-mutant cells by treatment with PRIMA-1 reversed these effects. The interdependence between p53 and Rho is based on nuclear p53 translocation facilitated by G-actin and enhanced by IR. Isolated IR-resistant p53-wild-type cells showed an altered morphology and increased stress fiber formation: inhibition of Rho or actin polymerization decreased cell viability in a p53-dependent manner and reversed the resistance phenotype. p53 silencing reversed the Rho inhibition-induced sensitization of IR-resistant cells. Rho inhibition also impaired the repair of IR-damaged DNA in 3D spheroid models. Rho GTPase activity and actin cytoskeleton dynamics are sensitive targets for the reversal of acquired resistance in GBM tumors with wild-type p53.

A major concern in engineering education involves ensuring that youth belonging to minoritized groups have equitable access to engineering career pathways. Related research often highlights the effect of student and school characteristics on engineering success but few studies have investigated the engineering-related assets that Black families provide. This work aims to provide counterstories that highlight the presence of Black families along the pre-college engineering pathways of three Black youth from the Midwest region of the United States. The application of a counternarrative approach centers the familial capital of Black families and serves as the analytical frame for this work. The interview instruments elicited narratives related to the quality and nature of the children's engineering experiences and family support. We found that Black families employed eight specific supportive practices. These findings provide evidence of ways that Black families support engineering learning and refute the positioning of Black families as resource-deficient and under-engaged. This work contributes to the engineering education and family studies fields.

Objectives: The aim of the study is to demonstrate the best stress urinary incontinence (SUI) surgical technique for women with a Body mass index higher than 30. The results of Transvaginal Tension Free Vaginal Tape-Obturator and Mini-sling surgery were analyzed and compared through both clinical examination and standardized questionnaires at 36 months of follow-up. Materials and methods: This is a retrospective multicenter study over 159 women with SUI who underwent surgery. Seventy-eight women underwent TVT-O and 81 Mini-sling technique. Intra and post-operative complications were recorded. Patients were monitored for 36 months by analyzing symptoms, voiding diary, quality of life and sexual activity through standardized questionnaires. Results: Complications had a low incidence in both groups and inter-group differences were superimposable. Only groin pain was statistically higher after TVT-O than after Mini-sling (12.8% vs1.2%, p = 0.03). At 36 months of follow-up, a statistically significant decrease in Positive stress test (%) and Q-Tip test (grade) was observed in both groups with no differences between them (p = 0.54 and p = 0.32 respectively). The mean number of daily voids was higher after TVT-O (p = 0.04) than after Altis (p = 0.22) with a significant difference in favor of the Altis group (p = 0.03). After 36 months, there were no significant differences between groups in terms of quality of life and sexual activity. PGI-I did not show any difference between groups (p = 0.21). Conclusion: TVT-O and Minisling had the same efficacy and results in the surgical treatment of SUI in obese women. Both techniques relieved their symptoms and improved their quality of life without any significant difference except for a lower incidence of post- Mini-sling complications.

The persistent underrepresentation of women in engineering continues to be a complex and difficult challenge. The interactions of young women and their parents during early, family-oriented engineering design experiences can provide girls with opportunities to express agency during an engineering activity, which can ultimately contribute to the development of sustained interest and self-efficacy in engineering. However, few studies have examined these parent-child interactions to date, and none have specifically focused on moments when girls express agency during an engineering design process. In this paper, we examine one such setting: a museum exhibit that engages visitors in engineering design activity. A qualitative content analysis was performed on transcripts from a total of 39 family groups videotaped at the exhibit, each involving a daughter between the ages of 5-12 and at least one parent. Qualitative codes describing the ways children expressed agency and led interactions with their parents included "directing", "proposing design ideas", and "asking questions". Interestingly, the analysis also suggests that the young women in this study tended to direct their mothers more than their fathers. Although focused specifically on parent-child interactions, this study can inform both formal and informal engineering educators who engage young students in engineering activities.

Just as engineering and computational thinking have recently gained increased attention in pre-college school-based education, many museums and science centers have also designed exhibits and experiences to promote computational thinking and engineering learning. Recent reports suggest that computational and engineering thinking can empower each other, and engineering design can be an appropriate context for children's engagement in computational thinking. Previous studies have documented young children's abilities to engage in engineering thinking and other studies have collected evidence of young children's abilities to engage in computational thinking. However, there is little research that explores how children's engagement in both engineering and computational thinking can support each other. Hence, in this qualitative case study, we aimed to examine how 5 to 7-year-old children engage in computational thinking competencies in the context of a family based engineering design activity. This activity was conducted at a small science center exhibit. In our presented findings we map children's enactment of at least one CT competency to children's engagement in engineering design actions.

Abstract Background Cat eye syndrome (CES) is a rare chromosomal disease, with estimated incidence of about 1 in 100,000 live newborns. The classic triad of iris coloboma, anorectal malformations, and auricular abnormalities is present in 40% of patients, and other congenital defects may also be observed. The typical associated cytogenetic anomaly relies on an extra chromosome, derived from an inverted duplication of short arm and proximal long arm of chromosome 22, resulting in partial trisomy or tetrasomy of such regions (inv dup 22pter-22q11.2). Case presentation We report on a full-term newborn, referred to us soon after birth. Physical examination showed facial dysmorphisms, including hypertelorism, down slanted palpebral fissures, and dysplastic ears with tragus hypoplasia and pre-auricular pit. Ophthalmologic evaluation and heart ultrasound identified left chorioretinal and iris coloboma and ostium secundum type atrial septal defect, respectively. Based on the suspicion of cat eye syndrome, a standard karyotype analysis was performed, and detected an extra small marker chromosome confirming the CES diagnosis. The chromosomal abnormality was then defined by array comparative genome hybridization (a-CGH, performed also in the parents), which identified the size of the rearrangement (3 Mb), and its de novo occurrence. Postnatally, our newborn presented with persistent hypoglycemia and cholestatic jaundice. Endocrine tests revealed congenital hypothyroidism, cortisol and growth hormone (GH) deficiencies, which were treated with replacement therapies (levotiroxine and hydrocortisone). Brain magnetic resonance imaging, later performed, showed aplasia of the anterior pituitary gland, agenesis of the stalk and ectopic neurohypophysis, confirming the congenital hypopituitarism diagnosis. She was discharged at 2 months of age, and included in a multidisciplinary follow-up. She currently is 7 months old and shows a severe global growth failure, and developmental delay. She started GH replacement treatment, and continues oral hydrocortisone, along with ursodeoxycholic acid and levothyroxine, allowing an adequate control of glycemic and thyroid profiles as well as of cholestasis. Conclusions CES phenotypic spectrum is wide and highly variable. Our report highlights how among the possible associated endocrine disorders, congenital hypopituitarism may occur, leading to persistent hypoglycemia and cholestasis. These patients should be promptly assessed for complete hormonal evaluations, in addition to major malformations and midline anomalies. Early recognition of such defects is necessary to decrease fatal events, as well as short and long-term related adverse outcomes.

Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic that began in late 2019 is caused by infection with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2. Since that time, many neuropsychiatric sequelae including psychosis, neurocognitive disorders, and mood disorders have been observed. The mechanism underlying these effects are currently unknown, however several mechanisms have been proposed. Case presentation A 47-year-old woman with past medical history including hypertension and premenstrual syndrome but no psychiatric history presented to the psychiatric hospital with new onset mania. She had developed symptoms of COVID-19 and was later diagnosed with COVID pneumonia. During quarantine, she reported high levels of stress, grief, and anxiety. Seventeen days into her illness, she developed altered mental status, sleeplessness, elevated mood, talkativeness, and preoccupations. Her spouse was concerned for her safety and contacted emergency medical services who brought her to the psychiatric hospital. She had not slept for five days prior to her arrival and exhibited flight of ideas, talkativeness, and grandiose ideas. She reported a family history of bipolar disorder but no past manic or depressive episodes. She was diagnosed with acute mania and stabilized using antipsychotics, a mood stabilizer, and a short course of a benzodiazepine. Many of her symptoms improved, including her elevated mood, increased activity level, and flight of ideas though she continued to have decreased need for sleep as her benzodiazepine was tapered. She and her partner were agreeable to transitioning to outpatient care after her mood stabilized. Conclusions This report emphasizes the link between COVID-19 and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Acute mania has no recognized association with COVID-19, but similar presentations have been reported. The patient’s age and time to onset of psychiatric symptoms is consistent with previous reports. Given the growing body of evidence, this association warrants further investigation. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 causes systemic inflammation and has been shown to be neurotropic. In addition, patients undergoing quarantine experience anxiety related to the disease in addition to social isolation. Psychiatric practitioners should be aware of these effects and advocate for psychiatric evaluation following COVID-19 infection. Understanding the sequelae of infectious disease is crucial for responding to future pandemics.

Abstract The Sachdev–Ye-Kitaev model spectral form factor exhibits absence of information loss, in the form of a ramp and a plateau that are typical in random matrix theory. In a large N collective fields description, the ramp was reproduced by Saad et al. (A semiclassical ramp in SYK and in gravity, arXiv:1806.06840 ) by replica symmetry breaking saddles. We derive a two sides Schwarzians effective action for fluctuations around the ramp critical saddles, by computing responses to a smeared version of the two replica kinetic kernel. Our result confirms [1], where the form of the action was heuristically guessed by indirect arguments supported by numerical evidences.

Cryopreserved vein allografts are used as alternative conduits for infrainguinal bypass but are prone to aneurysmal degeneration. A 60-year-old man presented with a pulsatile, tender right groin mass 2 years after thrombosis of a cryopreserved vein jump graft emanating from a prosthetic axillary to profunda bypass. Intraoperatively, the aneurysm was consistent with isolated dilatation of the hood of the thrombosed cryopreserved vein graft. This was excised and repaired with bovine pericardial patch angioplasty. The patient recovered with no recurrence for 2 years. Aneurysmal degeneration of the cryopreserved vein allograft can occur even after graft thrombosis.

A central challenge in engineering education is providing experiences that are appropriate for and accessible to underserved communities. However, to provide such experiences, we must better understand the process of offering a geographically distributed asset-based out-of-school program. This paper focuses on a collaborative research project that examined the broad implementation of the Summer Engineering Experiences for Kids (SEEK) program organized by the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). SEEK is a three-week summer program that engages participants in hands-on, team-based engineering design projects. NSBE's goal is to make SEEK culturally sustaining, community-connected, and scalable. The purpose of this paper is to provide a retrospective reflection on various aspects of our collaborative project and highlight a series of tradeoffs that must be carefully considered to offer and examine the effectiveness of an intervention designed both to affirm cultural background as well as to broaden access. Guided by Yosso's community cultural wealth (CCW) framework, we engaged in individual reflection and group discussions about the evolution of our three-year project. We considered the six types of capital outlined in CCW to examine various program design elements and tradeoffs. By illuminating the tradeoffs that are required, we hope this paper can help other program designers and researchers to intentionally, preemptively, and proactively consider such tradeoffs.
