3. Strain-induced martensitic transformations in tailored microstructures by L-PBF: In situ characterization via advanced neutron imaging

Abstract

The possibility of controlling the microstructure in laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) by locally changing the processing parameters, opens the possibility of building complex structures with tailored microstructures, leading to the development of smart materials. For metastable austenitic steels, the crystallographic texture strongly affects the TRIP effect. By employing L-PBF it is possible to locally engineer the microstructure to enhance or suppress the phase transformations. Here we quantitatively assess the transformation behavior of metastable stainless steel multitextured specimens manufactured by L-PBF under uniaxial tension quantifiting the formation of α′-martensite volume fraction in situ by employing polarization contrast neutron imaging (PNI). The results demonstrate a direct correlation between the local crystallographic texture of the specimens and the TRIP effect, providing valuable insights into the transformative potential of L-PBF in tailoring microstructures as well as the usefulness of PNI for characterizing complex structures.

Abstract

The European Spallation Source, currently under construction in Lund, Sweden, is a multidisciplinary international laboratory. Once completed to full specifications, it will operate the world's most powerful pulsed neutron source. Supported by a 3 million Euro Research and Innovation Action within the EU Horizon 2020 program, a design study (HighNESS) has been completed to develop a second neutron source located below the spallation target. Compared to the first source, designed for high cold and thermal brightness, the new source has been optimized to deliver higher intensity, and a shift to longer wavelengths in the spectral regions of cold (CN, 2--20\,\AA), very cold (VCN, 10--120\,\AA), and ultracold (UCN, ${>}\,{500}$\,\AA) neutrons. The second source comprises a large liquid deuterium moderator designed to produce CN and support secondary VCN and UCN sources. Various options have been explored in the proposed designs, aiming for world-leading performance in neutronics. These designs will enable the development of several new instrument concepts and facilitate the implementation of a high-sensitivity neutron-antineutron oscillation experiment (NNBAR). Abstract

Layer-wise laser-based additive manufacturing techniques offer immense versatility and flexibility in fabricating metallic composites with complex shapes. Interest in producing new multi-materials with advanced characteristics outpaces the available methods that provide insights into the bulk material formation, which in turn enables process and material optimisation. While some advanced operando studies enable highly local observations in the established metallic layers, the effect of intrinsic heat treatment inherent in the process in the bulk of the material is generally beyond reach of operando characterisation. Here, we approach the regime through advanced operando neutron imaging utilising a custom-designed laser powder bed fusion device on a neutron beamline. Operando polarisation contrast neutron imaging experiments were carried out during building centimetre-sized specimens with different powder premixture compositions of 316L and CuCrZr. The results of these full-field spatially resolved measurements reveal the quantitative evolution of ferromagnetic phases and temperature throughout the specimens and processing time.

Abstract

Pathogenic variants in the Leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) gene are a primary monogenic cause of Parkinson’s disease (PD). However, the likelihood of developing PD with inherited LRRK2 pathogenic variants differs (a phenomenon known as “reduced penetrance”), with factors including age and geographic region, highlighting a potential role for lifestyle and environmental factors in disease onset. To investigate this, household dust samples from four different groups of individuals were analyzed using metabolomics/exposomics and metagenomics approaches: PD+/LRRK2+ (PD patients with pathogenic LRRK2 variants; n = 11), PD-/LRRK2+ (individuals with pathogenic LRRK2 variants but without PD diagnosis; n = 8), iPD (PD of unknown cause; n = 11), and a matched, healthy control group (n = 11). The dust was complemented with metabolomics and lipidomics of matched serum samples, where available. 10. Rethinking How Units Coordination Is Assessed in Preservice Teacher Populations

Abstract

Fraction proficiency continues to be a challenge for many learners of mathematics. Valid and reliable methods for assessing fraction understanding are critical tools in the pursuit of meeting this challenge. Written assessments have been widely used with K-12 students to assess fraction understanding, including units coordination. However, using these types of assessments with a preservice PreK-8 teacher population has proved difficult and inconclusive. Preservice PreK-8 teachers have a variety of algorithmic techniques at their disposal, which has resulted in the need to reexamine how units coordination is assessed in this population. This paper shares the subsequent reconceptualization of assessing preservice PreK-8 teachers' units coordination. [For the complete proceedings, see ED630060.]

11. Predicting Preservice Mathematics Teachers' College Academic Achievement

Abstract

This study employed a multiple regression analysis to examine the relationship between academic aptitude and high school achievement factors to predict preservice mathematics teachers' college academic achievement. Specifically, an analysis of correlations and descriptive statistics was performed on predetermined academic factors of 67 undergraduate students enrolled as preservice mathematics teachers. In essence, a comparison of their SAT Verbal and SAT Mathematics scores, high school grade point averages, and college grade point averages disclosed significant relationships among all variables. Of special interest is that the mean high school grade point average of the preservice mathematics majors was a 3.63 (SD =.39), and the mean college GPA was 3.22 (SD =0.56), which resulted in a correlation of r = 0.53, n = 0.67, p < 0.01.

28. The Impact of Analyzing Student Work on Preservice Teachers' Content Knowledge and Beliefs about Effective Mathematics Teaching

Abstract

This study investigated the impact of analyzing student work on preservice teachers' knowledge and beliefs about mathematics teaching. Forty-two prospective teachers participated. Data were collected using established instruments from the Integrating Mathematics and Pedagogy (IMAP) project and from the Learning Mathematics for Teaching (LMT) project. Results are shared along with the protocol used to guide the treatment. Findings show that preservice teachers who learn through the analysis of student work experienced a significant impact on their beliefs regarding how mathematics should be taught. Findings also show student work analyses did not diminish content knowledge development. Implications for undergraduate mathematics education courses are presented.

Abstract

Mindsets have been shown to greatly influence individuals' efforts and subsequent success in the endeavors they attempt. This is particularly true of mathematical endeavors where mindset impacts the ways in which individuals approach and persevere in learning. This exploratory study investigated the mathematical mindsets held by 242 prospective teachers in undergraduate mathematics content courses for PreK-8 teachers as well as examined the relationships between mindset, depth of learning, challenge seeking choices, and course grades. A strong predictive nature was found to exist among these variables. Recommendations are identified for future research to investigate prospective teachers' mindsets and depth of learning.

Abstract

Spatially resolved studies of crystalline structures, e.g. lattice spacings, are enabled by recording the transmitted spectra in neutron Bragg edge imaging. The recorded signals are, however, a result of through-thickness averaging of the probed specimen in the beam direction. Therefore, it is challenging to extract the strain distribution when the strain varies across the thickness, which applies for studies on different materials or material states along the beam. Here we introduce the approach to disentangle contributions to the recorded signals, i.e. separating the transmission spectra of two different material states. This is particularly applicable to powder bed additive manufacturing environments where operando strain characterization of the printed specimen using neutrons is intended. In this work, Laser Powder Bed Fusion (PBF-LB/M)-built 316L and IN718 samples embedded in their corresponding powders are used, extracting the desired spectra of the printed specimen. The disentanglement is proven to be satisfactory by obtaining coinciding strain maps of identical specimens embedded in powder layers of different thicknesses. Furthermore, the obtained residual strain distributions of 316L samples were verified by conventional neutron diffraction with lower spatial resolution due to the gauge volume averaging.

Abstract

Sarcoptic mange is a highly contagious, worldwide disease that affects the skin of mammals, including humans. It is caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, however, the information available in wild mammal populations in the world, and particularly in Colombia is limited. Here, we document a new case of sarcoptic mange in an Andean porcupine (Coendou quichua) from the Andean region of Colombia. We morphologically and molecularly confirmed the mite as S. scabiei and documented the histopathology associated with scabies, and show the different stages of the life cycle of S. scabiei from the Andean porcupine skin samples. Our review of reports of additional cases of scabies in wild mammal species in South America showed 15 species, mostly carnivores, artiodactyls, and rodents. Considering the limited information in Colombia, it is urgent to evaluate the risk of this condition on mammals which would contribute to the epidemiological knowledge and the potential implications of sarcoptic mange in the ecology and conservation of wild mammals in the country.

Abstract

In glacier-fed streams, ecological windows of opportunity allow complex microbial biofilms to develop and transiently form the basis of the food web. Using metagenomics, this study reveals the metabolic strategies and key genomic underpinnings of adaptive traits that enable these biofilms to exploit environmental opportunities.
