Abstract Background Richter transformation (RT) is the development of aggressive lymphoma in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) or small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL). This rare disease is characterised by dismal prognosis. In recent years, there has been a deeper understanding of RT molecular pathogenesis, and disruptions of apoptosis (TP53) and proliferation (CDKN2A, MYC, NOTCH1) has been described as typical aberrations in RT. Results A single-institution cohort of 33 RT patients were investigated by karyotyping, fluorescence in situ hybridization and single nucleotide polymorphism/copy number (CN) arrays. Most of RTs were typically manifested by diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, not otherwise specified, among the remaining cases one was classified as high-grade B-cell lymphoma with 11q aberrations. The most frequent alterations (40–60% of cases) were represented by MYC rearrangement/gain, deletions of TP53 and CDKN2A, IGH rearrangement and 13q14 deletion. Several other frequent lesions included losses of 14q24.1-q32.33, 7q31.33-q36.3, and gain of 5q35.2. Analysis of 13 CLL/SLL-RT pairs showed that RT arised from the CLL/SLL by acquiring of 10 ~ 12 cytogenetic or CN lesions/case, but without acquisition of loss of heterozygosity regions. Our result affirmed the higher genetic complexity in RT than CLL/SLL and confirmed the linear features of RT clonal evolution as predominant. Conclusions Cytogenomic profile was concordant with the literature data, however the role of IGH rearrangement, 14q deletion and 5q35.2 gain need to be explored. We anticipate that further characterization of RT lesions will probably facilitate better understanding of the RT clonal evolution.

The aim of this study is to examine the influence of various factors on the precision and repeatability of the experimental determination of herbicide adsorption isotherms. Studies were conducted for the activated carbon RIB as an adsorbent and three herbicides as adsorbates: 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (4-CPA), and 3-chlorophenoxypropionic acid (3-CPP). The herbicide adsorption process was carried out in single-component and multi-component modes (the herbicide was adsorbed in the presence of an accompanying substance, i.e., 4-nitroaniline (4-NA)). Due to the significant contribution of the competition phenomenon in the adsorption process, which is important, e.g., in multi-component environmental systems, a qualitative and quantitative analysis of herbicide adsorption in the presence of a competing substance was presented. This work presents, among other things, the influence of adsorbent heterogeneity (grain size) on measurement uncertainties. The spread of standard deviations for solutions requiring dilution during spectrophotometric measurements was discussed, indicating that dilutions contribute to increasing measurement uncertainties. The heterogeneity parameters of the Freundlich equation for the studied adsorption systems were analyzed; the 2,4-D/RIB system was indicated as the most energetically heterogeneous. Differentiation of the experimental conditions (pH, temperature) allowed us to assess their impact on the efficiency and mechanism of adsorption. A high repeatability of experimental isotherms was obtained for the multi-component system. The accuracy of quantitative determination of equilibrium concentrations for the tested two-component systems was assessed based on the measured UV-Vis spectra, and the adsorption of herbicides from single- and multi-component systems was compared.

In recent years, the new media have become so attractive that they are used for meetings, entertainment, and work. People more and more often use Facebook or phones instead of doing their work or family duties. The main aim of the present study was to test the mediating role of future anxiety in the relationship between procrastination and problematic new media use. The participants were students (N = 478), aged 18 to 27 (M = 19.93, SD = 1.77); 64% of the sample were women. The General Procrastination Scale, the Decisional Procrastination Scale, the Facebook Intrusion Questionnaire, the Adapted Mobile Phone Use Habits, and the Future Anxiety Scale-Short Form were used. The study showed that those students who procrastinated often reported a high tendency to engage in problematic new media use and a high level of future anxiety. The findings of the study have important implications for research on problematic Facebook and mobile phone use. Excessive Facebook use affects users' everyday social, health, and emotional functioning. The main aim of the study was to investigate the relations between Facebook intrusion, emotional functioning (three aspects of emotional intelligence, the tendency to ruminate, and the tendency to experience anxiety), and health problems (somatic symptoms, social dysfunction, and anxiety/insomnia). The participants were 1396 high school and university or college students; 71% of them were women. The authors used the Facebook Intrusion Scale, the Emotional Intelligence Scale (INTE), the Rumination Questionnaire, the Trait Anxiety Inventory (X-2), and the General Health Questionnaire. They found that the examined aspects of emotional functioning-rumination, trait anxiety, and emotional intelligence-were related to Facebook intrusion. They also established that anxiety, rumination, and emotional intelligence exerted a significant indirect effect on health problems: anxiety/insomnia via Facebook intrusion. In this work, various types of silica materials were used for the synthesis of chitosan–silica composites. The composites were obtained using the chitosan (Ch) immobilization process from an aqueous solution on various silica phases, i.e., amorphous diatomite (ChAD), crystalline diatomite (ChCD), mesoporous silica MCM-41 (ChMCM), and mesoporous silica SBA-15 (ChSBA). Textural, structural, morphological, and surface properties of the materials were determined by using various measurement techniques, i.e., low-temperature adsorption/desorption isotherms of nitrogen, X-ray diffraction (XRD), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), potentiometric titration, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The adsorption properties towards various anionic dyes, i.e., acid red 88 (AR88), acid orange 8 (AO8), and orange G (OG), were evaluated based on kinetic and equilibrium measurements. The ChSBA, ChAD, and ChMCM composites were characterized by relatively high adsorption capacities (am) for AR88, with values equal to 0.78, 0.71, and 0.69 mmol/g, respectively. These composites were also distinguished by the rapid AR88 adsorption rate, with the values of half-time parameter t0.5 equal to 0.35, 2.84, and 1.53 min, respectively. The adsorption equilibrium and kinetic data were analyzed by applying the generalized Langmuir isotherm and the multi-exponential equation (m-exp), respectively. An interaction mechanism between the dyes and the obtained materials was proposed.

This study presents the results of applying the methods of synthesizing mesoporous carbon and mesoporous polymer materials with an extended porous mesostructure as adsorbents for cationic dye molecules. Both types of adsorbents are synthetic materials. The aim of the presented research was the preparation, characterisation, and utilisation of obtained mesoporous adsorbents. The physicochemical properties, morphology, and porous structure characteristics of the obtained materials were determined using low-temperature nitrogen sorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction (XRD), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and potentiometric titration measurements. The morphology and microstructure were imaged using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The chemical characterisation of the surface chemistry of the adsorbents, which provides information about the surface-active groups, the elemental composition, and the electronic state of the elements, was carried out using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The adsorption properties of the mesoporous materials were determined using equilibrium and kinetic adsorption experiments for three selected cationic dyes (derivatives of thiazine (methylene blue) and triarylmethane (malachite green and crystal violet)). The adsorption capacity was analysed to the nanostructural and surface properties of used materials. The Generalized Langmuir equation was applied for the analysis of adsorption isotherm data. The adsorption study showed that the carbon materials have a higher sorption capacity for both methylene blue and crystal violet, e.g., 0.88–1.01 mmol/g and 0.33–0.44 mmol/g, respectively, compared to the polymer materials (e.g., 0.038–0.044 mmol/g and 0.038–0.050 mmol/g, respectively). The kinetics of dyes adsorption was closely correlated with the structural properties of the adsorbents. The kinetic data were analysed using various equations: first-order (FOE), second-order (SOE), mixed 1,2-order (MOE), multi-exponential (m-exp), and fractal-like MOE (f-MOE).

Online social networking sites are places where users spend a lot of their time and leave a huge number of narratives. In the virtual world of Facebook, moving in a space is limited to only a slight hand movement. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the level of Facebook intrusion, time perspective, and the contents of Facebook narratives. The participants were 83 Polish Facebook users, aged 18 to 62 years. We used the Facebook Intrusion Questionnaire, the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory, and the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count program. The results suggest that Facebook intrusion is connected with the low future perspective of Facebook users. Moreover, the stronger the Facebook intrusion, the more swear words in Facebook narratives. There were significant positive relationships between a present fatalistic time perspective and words expressing aggression in Facebook narratives. The results were interpreted in the context of the theory of embodied cognition.

The aim of this work is the synthesis and characterization of the series of S,S′-thiodi-4,1-phenylene bis(thio-methacrylate)-co-divinylbenzene (DMSPS-co-DVB) nanomaterials. The series of new nanopolymers including three mixed systems with different ratios of DMSPS and DVB components, DMSPS-co-DVB = 1:1, DMSPS-co-DVB = 1:2, and DMSPS-co-DVB = 1:3, was synthesized in the polymerization reaction. The research task is to investigate the influence of the reaction mixture composition on morphological, textural, and structural properties of final nanosystems including size, shape, and agglomeration effect. The advanced biphasic nanomaterials enriched with thiol groups were successfully synthesized as potential sorbents for binding organic substances, heavy metals, or biomolecules. To determine the impact of the DMSPS monomer on the final properties of DMSPS-co-DVB nanocomposites, several techniques were applied to reveal the nano-dimensional structure (SAXS), texture (low-temperature nitrogen sorption), general morphology (SEM), acid–base properties (potentiometric titration), and surface chemistry and phase bonding effectiveness (FTIR/ATR spectroscopy). Finally, kinetic studies of aniline sorption on polymeric materials were performed.

In this work, novel chitosan–silica hydrogels were synthesized and investigated by various complementary techniques. The hydrogels were obtained via the immobilization of chitosan (Ch) on the surface of mesoporous cellular foams (MCFs). The latter silica materials were obtained by a sol–gel process, varying the composition of the reaction mixture (copolymer Pluronic 9400 or Pluronic 10500) and the ageing temperature conditions (80 °C or 100 °C). The role of the silica phase in the hydrogels was the formation of a scaffold for the biopolymeric chitosan component and providing chemical, mechanical, and thermal stability. In turn, the chitosan phase enabled the binding of anionic pollutions from aqueous solutions based on electrostatic interaction mechanisms and hydrogen bonds. To provide information on structural, morphological, and surface properties of the chitosan–silica hydrogels, analyses such as the low-temperature adsorption/desorption of nitrogen, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were performed. Moreover, the verification of the utility of the chitosan–silica hydrogels as adsorbents for water and wastewater treatment was carried out based on kinetic and equilibrium studies of the Acid Red 88 (AR88) adsorption. Adsorption data were analyzed by applying various equations and discussed in terms of the adsorption on heterogeneous solid-surfaces theory. The adsorption mechanism for the AR88 dye–chitosan–silica hydrogel systems was proposed.

The increasing consumption of phenoxyacetic acid-derived herbicides is becoming a major public health and environmental concern, posing a serious challenge to existing conventional water treatment systems. Among the various physicochemical and biological purification processes, adsorption is considered one of the most efficient and popular techniques due to its high removal efficiency, ease of operation, and cost effectiveness. This review article provides extensive literature information on the adsorption of phenoxyacetic herbicides by various adsorbents. The purpose of this article is to organize the scattered information on the currently used adsorbents for herbicide removal from the water, such as activated carbons, carbon and silica adsorbents, metal oxides, and numerous natural and industrial waste materials known as low-cost adsorbents. The adsorption capacity of these adsorbents was compared for the two most popular phenoxyacetic herbicides, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (MCPA). The application of various kinetic models and adsorption isotherms in describing the removal of these herbicides by the adsorbents was also presented and discussed. At the beginning of this review paper, the most important information on phenoxyacetic herbicides has been collected, including their classification, physicochemical properties, and occurrence in the environment.

A series of new types of composites (biopolymer–silica materials) are proposed as selective and effective adsorbents. A new procedure for the synthesis of chitosan–nanosilica composites (ChNS) and chitosan–silica gel composites (ChSG) using geometrical modification of silica and mechanosorption of chitosan is applied. The highest adsorption efficiency was achieved at pH = 2, hence the desirability of modifications aimed at stabilizing chitosan in such conditions. The amount of chitosan in the synthesis grew to 1.8 times the adsorption capacity for the nanosilica-supported materials and 1.6 times for the silica gel-based composites. The adsorption kinetics of anionic dyes (acid red AR88) was faster for ChNS than for ChSG, which results from a silica-type effect. The various structural, textural, and physicochemical aspects of the chitosan–silica adsorbents were analyzed via small-angle X-ray scattering, scanning electron microscopy, low-temperature gas (nitrogen) adsorption, and potentiometric titration, as well as their adsorption effectiveness towards selected dyes. This indicates the synergistic effect of the presence of dye-binding groups of the chitosan component, and the developed interfacial surface of the silica component in composites.

This paper reports the synthesis and structural analysis of mesoporous silica materials with the use of aluminum phyllosilicate clay (bentonite) as an alternative silica source. In the proposed synthesis, bentonite, as natural aluminosilicate, was used instead of commercially available and quite expensive tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) silica source. The objective of the research study was to determine the effect of aluminum loading in the mesoporous silica body for ordering structure, porosity, and potential sorption capacity to thorium ions. The unique direction developed in this procedure is focused on preparing advanced materials from natural sources with their own desired functionality and general availability. The applied procedure based on the classic, one-step synthesis of SBA-15 silicates was modified by gradually increasing the bentonite amount with simultaneous reduction of the TEOS content. The structural and morphological characterization, as well as evaluation of the porous structure of the obtained materials, was performed using powder wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), small-angle scattering (SAXS), transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM, SEM), low-temperature nitrogen adsorption–desorption methods and potentiometric titration. The new, cost-effective composites for the removal of Th(IV) ions are proposed. The synergistic effect of expanding the porous surface using bentonite as a silica precursor and the presence of thorium-binding groups (such as Al2O3) is indicated.

The interaction between inorganic nanoparticles and biological molecules is of great importance in the field of biosystems and nanomaterials. Here, we report the adsorption process of a heterocyclic organic compound (nitrogenous base) on a microporous carbon (C) in the presence of a colloidal silver solution (AgNP solution) as an accompanying substance. Analysis of the potential colloid–biomolecule interaction as well as the subsequent phenomenon of changes in the morphology of the colloidal system in the presence of selected nucleotides was investigated. Adenosine nitrogenous base (Anb) was selected as a model molecule of the building block of DNA and RNA. The adsorption process of nucleotides from one- and two-component systems was monitored by cyclic UV-VIS measurements for obtaining time-dependent profiles and estimating the kinetic characteristics of uptake. We demonstrate the temperature-dependent course of the adsorption process with visible nucleotide-AgNP morphology determinants. The experimental adsorption kinetics were analyzed using selected theoretical models (intraparticle diffusion model, multiexponential equation, and many others). On the other hand, obtained Anb/C and Anb/AgNP/C composites were characterized by various techniques suitable for material surface and morphology characterization: high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM and TEM/EDX), N2 physisorption measurements, and thermal analysis (thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)/differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) experiments).

The occurrence of MYC-negative Burkitt lymphoma (BL) has been discussed for many years. The real frequency of the MYC insertion in MYC-negative BL is still unknown. Fine-needle aspiration biopsies of 108 consecutive patients with clinicopathologically suspected BL (suspBL) were evaluated by flow cytometry, classical cytogenetics, and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). We found 12 cases (11%) without the MYC rearrangement by FISH with a MYC breakapart probe: two patients (1.9%) with cryptic MYC/IGH fusion (finally diagnosed as BL) and 10 patients (9.3%) with 11q gain/loss (finally diagnosed as Burkitt-like lymphoma with 11q aberration). The exact breakpoints of the cryptic MYC/IGH were investigated by next-generation sequencing. The MYC insertions’ breakpoints were identified in PVT1 in the first case, and 42 kb upstream of 5′MYC in the second case. To date, a molecular characterization of the MYC insertion in BL has only been reported in one case. Detailed descriptions of our MYC insertions in a routinely and consecutively diagnosed suspBL cohort will contribute to resolving the issue of MYC negativity in BL. In our opinion, the presence of the MYC insertions in BL and other lymphomas might be underestimated, because routine genetic diagnostics are usually based on FISH only, without karyotyping.

Introduction/Objective. During the past 20 years, there have been numerous attempts to design and apply a simple, affordable blood analysis tool for diagnostic and prognostic purposes in psychiatry. In this article we demonstrate that some mathematical parameters of chromatin organization and distribution in blood neutrophil granulocytes are related to stress levels in patients diagnosed with recurrent depressive disorder (RDD). Methods. The study was performed on 50 RDD participants who were asked to complete Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales (DASS-21). Peripheral blood samples were obtained from all the participants, smeared on glass slides and stained using a modification of Giemsa method. A total of 500 representative chromatin structures (10 per patient) of neutrophil granulocytes were evaluated using textural analysis with the application of gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) method. Parameters such as angular second moment (indicator of textural uniformity), inverse difference moment (textural homogeneity), and textural sum variance were calculated. Results. The results indicate that there is a statistically highly significant correlation (p < 0.01) between certain chromatin GLCM parameters such as inverse difference moment, and DASS-21 stress score. There was also a significant difference (p < 0.05) in some chromatin GLCM parameters in patients diagnosed with RDD with psychotic features, when compared to the ones without psychosis. Conclusion. These findings suggest that in the future, chromatin GLCM features might have a certain predictive value for some clinical features of recurrent depressive disorder.

Abstract We sought to determine whether metformin treatment reverses a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced hepatic insulin resistance (IRes) and to identify lipid intermediates involved in induction of liver IRes. The experiments were conducted on male Wistar rats divided into three groups: 1. Control, 2. fed HFD and 3. fed HFD and treated with metformin. The animals were infused with a [U-13C]palmitate to measure fractional lipid synthesis rate. This allowed for the calculation of fractional synthesis rate of signaling lipids (FSR) through the estimation of their isotopic enrichment. Liver ceramide (Cer), diacylglycerol (DAG) and acyl-carnitine concentration and enrichment were analyzed by LC/MS/MS. The content of proteins involved in lipid metabolism and insulin signaling were analyzed by Western Blot. HFD treatment increased the content and FSR of DAG and Cer in the liver which was accompanied by systemic insulin resistance and inhibition of hepatic insulin signaling pathway under insulin stimulation. Metformin treatment ameliorated systemic insulin resistance and augmented the hepatic insulin signaling cascade. It reduced both the concentration and FSR of Cer, DAG, and increased acyl-carnitine content and the expression of mitochondrial markers. We postulate, that in liver, the insulin sensitizing effect of metformin depends on augmentation of mitochondrial β-oxidation, which protects from hepatic accumulation of both the Cer and DAG and preserves insulin sensitivity under HFD consumption. Moreover, we showed that hepatic content of Cer and DAG corresponds with their respective FSR.

BACKGROUND: “Phubbing” phenomenon, in the frequent use of a smartphone, describes the habit of snubbing someone in favor of a mobile phone. Its predictors and consequences are few in developed countries, but the literature lacks information on its actual occurrence and impact on adolescents and youth in a developing country such as India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This impact evaluation study was carried out as part of the Phubbing Project of the University of Poland for 6 months (November 15, 2016”May 15, 2017) on a sample of 400 adolescents and youth selected randomly from the five colleges in the district of Muzaffarnagar of Uttar Pradesh state in India. Data were collected through the Internet using e-questionnaires sent to all students. The phubbing predictors' and consequences' scales available in literature were used and data were analyzed by a mixed method to get the study findings. RESULTS: The prevalence of phubbing was 49.3%. The most important predictors associated with phubbers were Internet addiction (p < 0.0001, Odds Ratio 2.26), smartphone addiction (OR 25.9), fear of missing out (OR 18.8), and the lack of self-control (p < 0.0001, OR = 0.73”1.72) . Phubbing also had significant consequences on their social health, relationship health, and self-flourishing, and was significantly related to depression and distress. Logistic regression analysis showed significant impact of phubbing predictors on phubbing consequences in phubbers, especially in depressed and distress status. CONCLUSION: Adolescents and youth of India need special guidance from government adolescent clinics or colleges or even families to control this habit in order to promote better physical, mental, and social health.
