The iNaturalist application has been gaining traction in both biodiversity research and education. Increasingly more research is being carried out, looking into using the iNaturalist application in biology education, to promote biodiversity and educate students about this topic. We used the PRISMA systematic literature review method to examine research carried out using the iNaturalist application in biology education by searching Web of Science and Scopus, and including citizen science in the process. We searched through the iNaturalist forum, where users contribute research performed using iNaturalist. We found that an increasing number of articles have been published on this topic over the years. Researchers are using iNaturalist to improve BioBlitz activities, to enhance outdoor education activities, and to help make herbaria. Summarizing the work performed in this area, we suggest guidelines for including and preparing the iNaturalist application in a school context to be used by teachers and researchers alike.

Abstract In the realm of disease vectors and agricultural pest management, insecticides play a crucial role in preserving global health and ensuring food security. The pervasive use, particularly of organophosphates (OPs), has given rise to a substantial challenge in the form of insecticide resistance. Carboxylesterases emerge as key contributors to OP resistance, owing to their ability to sequester or hydrolyze these chemicals. Consequently, carboxylesterase enzymes become attractive targets for the development of novel insecticides. Inhibiting these enzymes holds the potential to restore the efficacy of OPs against which resistance has developed. This study aimed to screen the FooDB library to identify potent inhibitory compounds targeting carboxylesterase, Ha006a from the agricultural pest Helicoverpa armigera. The ultimate objective is to develop effective interventions for pest control. The compounds with the highest scores underwent evaluation through docking studies and pharmacophore analysis. Among them, four phytochemicals—donepezil, protopine, 3′,4′,5,7-tetramethoxyflavone, and piperine—demonstrated favorable binding affinity. The Ha006a-ligand complexes were subsequently validated through molecular dynamics simulations. Biochemical analysis, encompassing determination of IC50 values, complemented by analysis of thermostability through Differential Scanning Calorimetry and interaction kinetics through Isothermal Titration Calorimetry was conducted. This study comprehensively characterizes Ha006a-ligand complexes through bioinformatics, biochemical, and biophysical methods. This investigation highlights 3′,4′,5,7-tetramethoxyflavone as the most effective inhibitor, suggesting its potential for synergistic testing with OPs. Consequently, these inhibitors offer a promising solution to OP resistance and address environmental concerns associated with excessive insecticide usage, enabling a significant reduction in their overuse.

Preview: This special issue of Eidos. A Journal for Philosophy of Culture follows on from the double special issue on Science and Religion published at the end of last year. This double issue focused primarily on questions in metaphysics and ontology. What several of the contributions have pointed out, however, is that the naturalistic worldview, which takes empirical science to be the only reliable source of knowledge, also implies a certain approach to living. Unsurprisingly this outlook extends beyond epistemological commitments of naturalism and has consequences for the fundamental values which guide some of our choices and shape our outlook on the world. Being critical of this trend Roger Scruton has called it the charm of, or enchantment with, disenchantment.

Abstract Electrospinning stands out as a flexible and viable method, presenting designed nanoscale materials with customized properties. This research demonstrates the immobilization of carboxylesterase protein Ha006a, reported for its adequacy in pesticide bioremediation by utilizing the electrospinning strategy. This strategy was utilized to create nanofibers by incorporating variable mixtures of biodegradable and cost-effective polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-chitosan (CS) nanofiber solution (PVA100, PVA96, PVA94, PVA92 and PVA90). All the mixtures were electrospun at a reliable voltage of 21 kV, maintaining a gap of 12 cm from the nozzle. The Ha006a, sourced from Helicoverpa armigera, was consolidated into the optimized PVA90 polymer mixture. The electrospun nanofibers experienced comprehensive characterization utilizing distinctive microscopy and spectroscopy procedures counting FESEM, TGA, XRD and FTIR. The comparative investigation of the esterase property, ideal parameters and stability of the unbound and bound/immobilized Ha006a was scrutinized. The results uncovered an essential elevation in the ideal conditions of enzyme activity post-immobilization. The PVA-CS control nanofiber and Ha006a-PVA-CS showed a smooth structure, including an average breadth of around 170.5 ± 44.2 and 222.5 ± 66.5 nm, respectively. The enzyme-immobilized nanofibers displayed upgraded stability and comprehensive characterization of the nanofiber, which guaranteed genuineness and reproducibility, contributing to its potential as a potent device for bioremediation applications. This investigation opens the way for the manufacture of pesticide-resistant insect enzyme-based nanofibers, unlocking their potential for assorted applications, counting pesticide remediation and ensuring environmental sustainability.

Abstract Climate change and human activity are leading to water scarcity in southwestern Europe. Groundwater use is thought to be unsustainable in the region, yet regional assessments using measured data are missing. Here, we evaluate long-term trends and drivers of groundwater levels and found a more complex situation. Historical data (1960–2020) from 12,398 wells in Portugal, Spain, France, and Italy showed 20% with rising groundwater levels, 68% were stable, and only 12% were declining. Rising wells in temperate climates were due to increased precipitation. Recovering wells in semi-arid regions were attributed to improved groundwater management. Stable wells are concentrated in temperate climates with year-round high precipitation. Declining wells in semi-arid regions are primarily located near agricultural areas and experience prolonged summer soil moisture loss, whereas in temperate regions, the decline is associated with large urban areas. Systematic groundwater monitoring and data sharing are essential for sustainable and science-based water resources management.

BACKGROUND: In transfusion medicine, cross-matching and compatibility are determined using the conventional tube approach. The goal of the current study is to compare the microtyping gel approach to the conventional tube method for studying blood cross-match. OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study was to assess the compatibility of donor’s blood with recipient blood by microtyping gel technique and conventional tube technique and comparison of advantages and disadvantages of the two techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This observational, cross-sectional study investigation was carried out in a tertiary care facility’s blood bank for 1½ years. It was decided to compare the effectiveness of the traditional tube and gel techniques. RESULTS: In the current investigation, we evaluated the age of the study participants and found that the majority of the study participants were male (63.17%) and most of them were between the ages of 21 and 40 years. The men-to-women ratio in this study was 1.71:1. About 2300 blood samples were subjected to compatibility testing using both the traditional test tube technology and the microtyping gel technology. The conventional method and the gel card approach are equivalent in terms of sensitivity and specificity. However, the gel card approach is simple to use, quick, reliable, and allows for the recording of data. The spin saline tube approach, in comparison, takes longer and produces unreliable results. This makes the gel card approach preferable to the conventional method. The findings were examined. CONCLUSIONS: Although the conventional tube technology is still regarded as the gold standard for pretransfusion analysis, it nevertheless has several drawbacks and relies on the precise hand–eye coordination of the laboratory staff. We advise using the microtyping gel approach due to its ease of use, stability of outcomes, dispensing of controls and absence of washing process, and equivalent specificity and sensitivity.

Abstract At energies that are large with respect to the electroweak scale, the electroweak corrections to scattering processes involve large logarithms that have to be resummed to obtain decent predictions. Soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) has been proposed as a suitable framework to allow for this resummation, while retaining non-logarithmic corrections in a consistent way. In this paper, we investigate the approximations needed to use this approach for the calculation of electroweak corrections to off-shell diboson production at high-energy colliders. Upon implementing the method into a Monte-Carlo integration code, we provide resummed predictions for cross sections and distributions at a $$3\,\text {TeV} $$ 3 TeV lepton collider and a $$100\,\text {TeV} $$ 100 TeV proton collider.

Literary psychology is a type of literary theory that is related to the human psyche. Through literary psychology we can understand the psychology or personality of the characters in a story. This research is aim to analyse the personality structure of the main character, Sum, in the short story Tart di Bulan Hujan by Bakdi Soemanto using Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. This research uses qualitative descriptive method and literary psychology approach, Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis, to analyse the personality structure of the Id, Ego, and Superego of the main character, Sum, in the short story Tart di Bulan Hujan. The results of this study indicates that the main character, Sum, in her personality shows the three personality structures of Id, Ego, and Superego. Sum’s Id is clearly visible from her strong desire to be able to buy a tart in the rainy month. Then the Ego personality helps the Id to get all its desires in a way that is acceptable in the real world, namely by collecting money by saving and working hard to buy the tart. Meanwhile, Sum’s Superego makes her put aside the Ego and Id. These three-personality structure control the behaviour and actions of Sum in making decisions.

Abstract Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) is a valid method to evaluate medical students’ competencies. The present cross-sectional study aimed at determining how students’ coping and health-related behaviors are associated with their psychological well-being and performance on the day of the OSCE. Fourth-year medical students answered a set of standardized questionnaires assessing their coping (BCI) and health-related behaviors before the examination (sleep PSQI, physical activity GPAQ). Immediately before the OSCE, they reported their level of instant psychological well-being on multi-dimensional visual analogue scales. OSCE performance was assessed by examiners blinded to the study. Associations were explored using multivariable linear regression models. A total of 482 students were included. Instant psychological well-being was positively associated with the level of positive thinking and of physical activity. It was negatively associated with the level of avoidance and of sleep disturbance. Furthermore, performance was negatively associated with the level of avoidance. Positive thinking, good sleep quality, and higher level of physical activity were all associated with improved well-being before the OSCE. Conversely, avoidance coping behaviors seem to be detrimental to both well-being and OSCE performance. The recommendation is to pay special attention to students who engage in avoidance and to consider implementing stress management programs. ABSTRACT Purpose: To evaluate the influence of patients’ serum vitamin D levels on muscle strength characteristics and whether it impacts the durability of botulinum toxin (BT) treatment. Methods: The muscle strength of the frontal and corrugator muscles was evaluated before and after the application of TB with pre- and post-application control measurements, and at weeks 2, 5 and 12. The effect of vitamin D on muscle strength and its interaction with BT were investigated in 20 patients. The muscle contraction force was measured by surface electromyography. Results: The results revealed statistically significant differences between the frontal measurement groups at weeks 2 and 5, as well as for the corrugator in the same weeks and at week 12. Regarding vitamin D, significant differences were observed only in the initial group with vitamin D > 30 ng/mL compared to < 30 ng/mL for the frontal muscles. Patients with higher levels of vitamin D had higher average muscle strength compared to those with lower levels in all evaluations. Conclusions: It was observed that vitamin D influences muscle strength and the necessary dosage of BT.

This study aimed to assess oviposition of Panonychus ulmi (Koch, 1936) (Acari: Tetranychidae) in response of conspecific and heterospecific mites cues on apple trees (Malus domestica Borkh: Rosaceae). The oviposition of P. ulmi was measured on apple tree leaves with the presence of webs, eggs, and other cues of phytophagous mites (Aculus schlechtendali (Nalepa, 1890) (Acari: Eriophyidae), P. ulmi, Tetranychus urticae Koch, 1936 (Acari: Tetranychidae), and Tetranychus ludeni Zacher, 1913 (Acari: Tetranychidae)). The presence of conspecific webs and cues increased the oviposition of P. ulmi, while the presence of A. schlechtendali and T. urticae webs and eggs and A. schlechtendali cues decreased oviposition. The oviposition increases in the presence of conspecifics suggesting that P. ulmi performs better in environments without heterospecific mites. On the other hand, the P. ulmi decreases in oviposition in presence of heterospecific mite cues suggesting a potential competitive displacement of tetranychid by eriophyid mites.

Summary: Background: There are limited data on the effectiveness of differentiated service delivery (DSD) for HIV care during sociopolitical turmoil. We assessed outcomes with a DSD model of care that includes patient choice between community-based antiretroviral therapy (ART) centres, home-based ART dispensing, or facility-based care at GHESKIO clinic during a period of severe civil unrest in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Methods: This retrospective analysis included data on patients with at least one HIV visit at GHESKIO between May 1, 2019, and December 31, 2021. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to assess predictors of attending ≥1 community visit during the study period, and failure to attend timely visits. HIV-1 RNA test results were reported among patients who had been ART for ≥3 months at last visit. Findings: Of the 18,625 patients included in the analysis, 9659 (51.9%) attended at least one community visit. The proportion of community visits ranged from 0.3% (2019) to 44.1% (2021). Predictors of ≥1 community visit included male sex (aOR: 1.13; 95% CI: 1.06, 1.20), secondary education (aOR: 1.07; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.14), income > $USD 1.00/day (aOR: 1.24; 95% CI: 1.14, 1.35), longer duration on ART (aOR: 1.08 per additional year; 95% CI: 1.07, 1.09), and residence in Carrefour/Gressier (p

Abstract Objectives B cells are important in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis. It is yet unknown which subsets may be involved, but atypical B cells have been proposed as mediators of autoimmunity. In this study, we investigated differences in B‐cell subsets between controls and patients with untreated and anti‐CD20‐treated multiple sclerosis. Methods We recruited 155 participants for an exploratory cohort comprising peripheral blood and cerebrospinal fluid, and a validation cohort comprising peripheral blood. Flow cytometry was used to characterize B‐cell phenotypes and effector functions of CD11c+ atypical B cells. Results There were no differences in circulating B cells between controls and untreated multiple sclerosis. As expected, anti‐CD20‐treated patients had a markedly lower B‐cell count. Of B cells remaining after treatment, we observed higher proportions of CD11c+ B cells and plasmablasts. CD11c+ B cells were expanded in cerebrospinal fluid compared to peripheral blood in controls and untreated multiple sclerosis. Surprisingly, the proportion of CD11c+ cerebrospinal fluid B cells was higher in controls and after anti‐CD20 therapy than in untreated multiple sclerosis. Apart from the presence of plasmablasts, the cerebrospinal fluid B‐cell composition after anti‐CD20 therapy resembled that of controls. CD11c+ B cells demonstrated a high potential for both proinflammatory and regulatory cytokine production. Interpretation The study demonstrates that CD11c+ B cells and plasmablasts are less efficiently depleted by anti‐CD20 therapy, and that CD11c+ B cells comprise a phenotypically and functionally distinct, albeit heterogenous, B‐cell subset with the capacity of exerting both proinflammatory and regulatory functions.

Objectives: To study epidemiological characteristics, clinical features, laboratory findings, and clinical outcomes in cases of scrub typhus. Additionally, the study aims to identify the predictors of disease severity. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of General Medicine at Dr PDM Medical College in Amaravati, India. The study duration was 6 months, from July 2023 to December 2023. All clinically confirmed patients with scrub typhus were evaluated through history, clinical examination, and appropriate laboratory investigations. The clinical and laboratory profiles, hospital course, and outcomes were analyzed. Organ dysfunction upon admission was assessed using the sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score. Results: A total of 200 cases were included in the study. The majority of the cases were in the age range of 31-40 years, and most of them were males. The highest number of scrub typhus cases occurred in September. The most common presenting symptoms were fever (81%), followed by nausea (37.5%), generalized weakness (34%), abdominal pain, eschar (21.5%), breathlessness, and cough (21% each), headache (19%), vomiting (15%), and altered sensorium (4.5%). The majority of patients (72.5%) did not experience any complications, while 55 patients (27.5%) developed multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) as a complication. The mortality rate was 1%. Conclusion: Scrub typhus is a significant cause of acute febrile illness in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. It can present with various clinical manifestations, with or without an eschar. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of these cases can lead to minimal complications.

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from rivers are globally relevant, but quantification of these emissions comes with considerable uncertainty. Quantification of ecosystem-scale emissions is challenged by both spatial and short-term temporal variability. We measured spatio-temporal variability of CO2 and CH4 fluxes from a 1 km long reach of the lowland river Elbe in Germany over 3 d to establish which factor is more relevant to be taken into consideration: small-scale spatial variability or short-term temporal variability of CO2 and CH4 fluxes. GHG emissions from the river reach studied were dominated by CO2, and 90 % of total emissions were from the water surface, while 10 % of emissions were from dry fallen sediment at the side of the river. Aquatic CO2 fluxes were similar at different habitats, while aquatic CH4 fluxes were higher at the side of the river. Artificial structures to improve navigability (groynes) created still water areas with elevated CH4 fluxes and lower CO2 fluxes. CO2 fluxes exhibited a clear diurnal pattern, but the exact shape and timing of this pattern differed between habitats. By contrast, CH4 fluxes did not change diurnally. Our data confirm our hypothesis that spatial variability is especially important for CH4, while diurnal variability is more relevant for CO2 emissions from our study reach of the Elbe in summer. Continuous measurements or at least sampling at different times of the day is most likely necessary for reliable quantification of river GHG emissions.

Intersexual dominance relationships in virtually all lemur species have been reported to be female-biased. Although a claim of male dominance in greater bamboo lemurs (Prolemur simus) which was not supported by data is unusual against this background, it is in line with recent studies on other lemur species that suggest the existence of a continuum of intersexual dominance relationships. We therefore studied the details of agonistic interactions among adults of one captive group of P. simus at Cologne Zoo. This very preliminary study confirmed male-biased dominance because the adult male of the study group won all agonistic interactions with all three adult females, and the male was never dominated by any of the females. This result raises several interesting questions about the mechanisms and evolution of intersexual dominance relationships in group-living lemurs and should encourage similar future studies of additional groups of this species – ideally in the wild.

Abstract The diets of the eight species of ursids range from carnivory (e.g., polar bears, Ursus maritimus) to insectivory (e.g., sloth bears, Melursus ursinus), omnivory (e.g., brown bears, U. arctos), and herbivory (e.g., giant pandas, Ailuropoda melanoleuca). Dietary energy availability ranges from the high-fat, highly digestible, calorically dense diet of polar bears (~ 6.4 kcal digestible energy/g fresh weight) to the high-fiber, poorly digestible, calorically restricted diet (~ 0.7) of giant pandas. Thus, ursids provide the opportunity to examine the extent to which dietary energy drives evolution of energy metabolism in a closely related group of animals. We measured the daily energy expenditure (DEE) of captive brown bears in a relatively large, zoo-type enclosure and compared those values to previously published results on captive brown bears, captive and free-ranging polar bears, and captive and free-ranging giant pandas. We found that all three species have similar mass-specific DEE when travel distances and energy intake are normalized even though their diets differ dramatically and phylogenetic lineages are separated by millions of years. For giant pandas, the ability to engage in low-cost stationary foraging relative to more wide-ranging bears likely provided the necessary energy savings to become bamboo specialists without greatly altering their metabolic rate.

Abstract Declining Arctic sea ice is increasing polar bear land use. Polar bears on land are thought to minimize activity to conserve energy. Here, we measure the daily energy expenditure (DEE), diet, behavior, movement, and body composition changes of 20 different polar bears on land over 19–23 days from August to September (2019–2022) in Manitoba, Canada. Polar bears on land exhibited a 5.2-fold range in DEE and 19-fold range in activity, from hibernation-like DEEs to levels approaching active bears on the sea ice, including three individuals that made energetically demanding swims totaling 54–175 km. Bears consumed berries, vegetation, birds, bones, antlers, seal, and beluga. Beyond compensating for elevated DEE, there was little benefit from terrestrial foraging toward prolonging the predicted time to starvation, as 19 of 20 bears lost mass (0.4–1.7 kg•day−1). Although polar bears on land exhibit remarkable behavioral plasticity, our findings reinforce the risk of starvation, particularly in subadults, with forecasted increases in the onshore period.

More than 13 million children are born preterm annually. Prematurity-related mortality accounts for 0.9 million deaths worldwide. The majority of those affected are Extremely Preterm Infants (gestational age less than 28 weeks). Immaturity causes organ failure and specific morbidities like germinal matrix hemorrhage, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, and necrotizing enterocolitis. Artificial womb and placenta technologies address these issues. As a bridge-to-life technology, they provide a liquid environment to allow organ maturation under more physiological conditions. The proposed artificial womb can adapt to fetal growth. Volume adjustment is achieved by removing fluid from the interspace between an inner and outer chamber. Results of the in vitro tests showed a temperature constancy of 36.8°C ± 0.3°C without pressure loss over 7 days. The volume of the inner sac was variable between 3.6 and 7.0 L. We designed a filtration and disinfection system for this particular purpose. This system has proven strong disinfection capabilities, effective filtering of metabolic waste, and the ability to avoid phospholipid washout. The presented artificial womb has sufficient volume variability to adapt to the physiologic growth of an extremely preterm neonate over a 4-week period. We regard this as an important step in the development of this bridge-to-life technology.

Abstract This observational, cross-sectional study with retrospective collection was aimed to evaluate the prevalence of morphological changes in mandibular condyles in individuals with class II malocclusion, classified according to different vertical growth patterns (brachyfacial, mesofacial, and dolichofacial), through cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Seventy CBCT images (140 mandibular condyles) were selected from individuals without orthodontic treatment, of both sexes, aged between 25 and 50 years. No statistically significant differences were found between facial patterns; however, there was a higher relative prevalence of bone changes in dolichofacial individuals with flattening (62%), sclerosis (44%), and subchondral bone cyst (20%). Erosion and osteophytes prevailed in mesofacial (39%), and brachyfacial individuals (32%), respectively. Thus, there was no statistically significant difference in the prevalence of degenerative changes between the vertical skeletal patterns. Flattening was the most prevalent change, whereas subchondral bone cyst was the least prevalent among the three groups studied. The observational design of this study makes it possible to analyze image banks to verify the correlation of morphological changes in the temporomandibular joint in different facial patterns in patients with class II malocclusion. A limitation of the study is that clinical characteristics were not evaluated.
