Background: Surgery and anesthesia-induced perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND) are closely related to NOD-like receptors (NLR) family, pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome microglia inflammatory response. Inhibiting the occurrence of neuroinflammation is an important treatment method to improve postoperative delirium. Fewer NLRP3-targeting molecules are currently available in the clinic to reduce the incidence of postoperative delirium. Dexmedetomidine (DEX), an α2 adrenergic receptor agonist has been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The present study showed that DEX reduced the production of cleaved caspase1 (CASP1) and destroyed the NLRP3–PYD And CARD Domain Containing (PYCARD)–CASP1 complex assembly, thereby reducing the secretion of IL-1β interleukin beta (IL-1β). DEX promoted the autophagy process of microglia and reduced NLRP3 expression. More interestingly, it promoted the ubiquitination and degradation of NLRP3. Thus, this study demonstrated that DEX reduced NLRP3-mediated inflammation through the activation of the ubiquitin-autophagy pathway. This study provided a new mechanism for treating PND using DEX.Methods: C57BL/6 mice were pre-administered DEX 3 days in advance, and an abdominal exploration model was used to establish a perioperative neurocognitive disorder model. The anti-inflammatory effect of DEX was explored in vivo by detecting NLRP3-CASP1/IL-1β protein expression and behavioral testing. Primary microglia were stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in vitro, the expression of CASP1 and IL-1β was detected in the supernatant of cells, and the expression of autophagy-related proteins microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 beta (MAP1LC3B) and sequestosome 1 (SQSTM1) was examined in the cytoplasm. Meanwhile, Co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP) was used to detect NLRP3 protein ubiquitination so as to clarify the new mechanism underlying the anti-inflammatory effect of DEX.Results: Pre-administration of DEX reduced the protein expression of NLRP3, CASP1, and IL-1β in the hippocampus of mice induced by surgery and also improved the impairment of learning and memory ability. At the same time, DEX also effectively relieved the decrease in spine density of the hippocampal brain induced by surgery. DEX decreased the cleaved CASP1 expression, blocked the assembly of NLRP3–PYCARD–CASP1 complex, and also reduced the secretion of mature IL-1β in vitro. Mechanically, it accelerated the degradation of NLRP3 inflammasome via the autophagy–ubiquitin pathway and reduced the green fluorescent protein/red fluorescent protein MAP1LC3B ratio, which was comparable to the effect when using the autophagy activator rapamycin (Rapa). Furthermore, it increased the ubiquitination of NLRP3 after LPS plus ATP stimulated microglia.Conclusion: DEX attenuated the hippocampal brain inflammation by promoting NLRP3 inflammasome degradation via the autophagy–ubiquitin pathway, thus improving cognitive impairment in mice.

In neurodegenerative diseases, neurodegeneration has been related to several mitochondrial dynamics imbalances such as excessive fragmentation of mitochondria, impaired mitophagy, and blocked mitochondria mitochondrial transport in axons. Mitochondria are dynamic organelles, and essential for energy conversion, neuron survival, and cell death. As mitochondrial dynamics have a significant influence on homeostasis, in this review, we mainly discuss the role of mitochondrial dynamics in several neurodegenerative diseases. There is evidence that several mitochondrial dynamics-associated proteins, as well as related pathways, have roles in the pathological process of neurodegenerative diseases with an impact on mitochondrial functions and metabolism. However, specific pathological mechanisms need to be better understood in order to propose new therapeutic strategies targeting mitochondrial dynamics that have shown promise in recent studies.

Introduction Childhood overweight and obesity (OWO) is a primary global health challenge. Childhood OWO prevention is now a public health priority in China. The Sino-Canadian Healthy Life Trajectories Initiative (SCHeLTI), one of four trials being undertaken by the international HeLTI consortium, aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a multifaceted, community-family-mother-child intervention on childhood OWO and non-communicable diseases risk.Methods and analysis This is a multicentre, cluster-randomised, controlled trial conducted in Shanghai, China. The unit of randomisation is the service area of Maternal Child Health Units (N=36). We will recruit 4500 women/partners/families in maternity and district level hospitals. Participants in the intervention group will receive a multifaceted, integrated package of health promotion interventions beginning in preconception or in the first trimester of pregnancy, continuing into infancy and early childhood. The intervention, which is centred on a modified motivational interviewing approach, will target early-life maternal and child risk factors for adiposity. Through the development of a biological specimen bank, we will study potential mechanisms underlying the effects of the intervention. The primary outcome for the trial is childhood OWO (body mass index for age ≥85th percentile) at 5 years of age, based on WHO sex-specific standards. The study has a power of 0.8 (α=0.05) to detect a 30% risk reduction in the proportion of children with OWO at 5 years of age, from 24.4% in the control group to 17% in the intervention group. Recruitment was launched on 30 August 2018 for the pilot study and 10 January 2019 for the formal study.Ethics and dissemination The study has been approved by the Medical Research Ethics Committee of the International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital in Shanghai, China, and the Research Ethics Board of the Centre Intégré Universitaire de Santé et Services Sociaux de l’Estrie–CHUS in Sherbrooke, Canada. Abstract Background Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the majority ovarian cancer (OC) type with a poor prognosis. This present study aimed to investigate potential prognostic factors including albumin-to-fibrinogen ratio (AFR) for advanced EOC patients with neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) followed by debulking surgery. Methods A total of 313 advanced EOC patients with NAC followed by debulking surgery from 2010 to 2017 were enrolled. The predictive value of AFR for the overall survival (OS) was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. The univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were applied to investigate prognostic factors for advanced EOC patients. The association between preoperative AFR and progression free survival (PFS) or OS was determined via the Kaplan–Meier method using log-rank test. In order to explore the influence of interlayer between dielectric layer and channel layer on performance of thin film transistors (TFTs), the single layer titanium doped zinc oxide (TiZO) TFTs and the dual layer indium tin oxide (ITO)/TiZO TFTs were fabricated successfully in this work. The effects of interlayer thickness on the performance of TFTs were studied and the optimal thickness condition was obtained. The experimental results indicate that the introduction of interlayer contributes to the improvement of TFT characteristics. In addition, the dual-layer ITO/TiZO TFTs also present a good uniformity, which is suitable for large-area display applications.

Background: The repair of large bone defects remains challenging for orthopaedic surgeons. Bone grafting remains the method of choice; such grafts fill spaces and enhance bone repair. Therapeutic agents also aid bone healing. The objective of this study is to develop a composite bioactive scaffold composed of polylactide-coglycolide (PLGA) and tricalcium phosphate (TCP) (the basic carrier) incorporating osteogenic, bioactive magnesium metal powder (Mg). Method: Porous PLGA/TCP scaffolds incorporating Mg were fabricated using a low-temperature rapid-prototyping process. We term the PLGA/TCP/Mg porous scaffold (hereafter, PPS). PLGA/TCP lacking Mg served as the control material when evaluating the efficacy of PPS. A total of 36 New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into blank, PLGA/TCP (P/T) and PPS group, with 12 rabbits in each group. We established bone defects 15 mm in length in rabbit radii to evaluate the in vivo osteogenic potential of the bioactive scaffold in terms of the direct controlled release of osteogenic Mg ion during in vivo scaffold degradation. Radiographs of the operated radii were taken immediately after implantation and then at 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks. Micro-computed tomography of new bone formation and remaining scaffold and histological analysis were performed at 4, 8, 12 weeks after operation. Results: X-ray imaging performed at weeks 4, 8 and 12 post-surgery revealed more newly formed bone within defects implanted with PPS and PLGA/TCP scaffolds than blank group (p < 0.05). Radiation protection for non-human marine organisms still faces many challenges. To establish a more realistic radiation dosimetry model of cephalopods, this study developed a stylized phantom of neon flying squid (Ommastrephesbartramii) containing ten organs and tissues based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology. The internal and external dose conversion coefficients for eight radionuclides (134Cs, 137Cs, 131I, 110mAg, 60Co, 54Mn, 65Zn, 95Zr) of each organ/tissue were determined with Monte Carlo simulation using the Geant4 toolkit. Furthermore, with the reported coastal seawater radioactivity levels at the coastal area of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant after the accident in 2011 as the source term, the radiological dose rate for O. bartramii was evaluated with the stylized phantom developed in this study and with the conventional whole-organism ellipsoidal model in the ERICA Assessment Tool. Both results showed that the dose rate for O. bartramii derived from the FDNPP accident releases exceeded the generic no-effects screening benchmark level (10 μGy h−1).

An internal wave is a typical dynamic process. As an internal wave, an internal solitary wave usually occurs between two layers of fluids with different densities. Compared with general internal waves, internal solitary waves have large amplitudes, fast propagation speeds, short-wave periods, and often have tremendous energy. The propagation causes strong convergence and divergence of seawater and generates a sudden strong current. Due to its various characteristics, the propagation of internal solitary waves can cause serious harm to offshore engineering structures. Therefore, studying the effects of internal solitary waves on risers is vital in preventing environmental pollution caused by riser damage. Although the research on internal solitary waves has achieved very fruitful results, the research on structures is mostly focused on a single condition, and the occurrence of internal solitary wave, as a complex ocean phenomenon, is often accompanied by many situations. Therefore, this paper constructs a numerical simulation of the interaction between two columns of internal solitary waves and risers. This study explores the force and flow field changes of the riser under the condition of multiple internal solitary waves using the Star-CCM+ software in the simulation. The improved K-epsilon turbulence model was adopted to close the three-dimensional incompressible Navier–Stokes equation, and the solitary wave solution of the eKdV equation was used as the initial and boundary conditions. The interaction between single and double internal solitary waves and a riser was calculated, compared, and analyzed using numerical analysis. The experiment results indicate that the conditions of two internal solitary waves differ from those of a single internal solitary wave. After colliding at the riser, the waves gradually merge into a single wave, and the flow field reaches its minimum velocity. Under the two-wave condition, the horizontal force on the riser as a whole is less than the single-wave condition. As the amplitude difference between the two internal solitary waves gradually decreases, the horizontal opposing force received by the riser first increases and then decreases, while the horizontal positive force gradually decreases.

Excessive wound exudates often cause infection and hinder wound repair and regeneration. It is therefore urgently needed to develop an ideal wound dressing for pumping the excessive biofluids and inhibiting bacterial infection in the wound healing process. Herein, we demonstrate a facile and efficient strategy to fabricate the unidirectional water-transport antibacterial wound dressings by embedding macromolecular antimicrobials into a multilayer nanofibrous membrane featured with hydrophobic-to-hydrophilic gradient structure and self-pumping effect using an electrospinning technique. Thanks to these features, the obtained nanofibrous dressings achieved excellent unidirectional water-transport performance, which could drive wound exudates to flow spontaneously from inside to outside and prevent pumped biofluids rewetting the wounds. In addition, the designed trilayered dressing exhibited approximately 100% antibacterial ability against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli when the concentration of antibacterial agents polyhexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride (PHGC) was 0.06 wt%. Moreover, the trilayered dressings revealed excellent water absorption performance, air and moisture permeability, mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and low cell adhesion behavior, indicating the potential applications for the trilayered nanofibrous wound dressings in wound care.

After neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NCRT) in locally advanced esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC), roughly 40% of the patients may achieve pathologic complete response (pCR). Those patients may benefit from organ-saving strategy if the probability of pCR could be correctly identified before esophagectomy. A reliable approach to predict pathological response allows future studies to investigate individualized treatment plans.MethodAll eligible patients treated in our center from June 2012 to June 2019 were retrospectively collected. Radiomics features extracted from pre-/post-NCRT CT images were selected by univariate logistic and LASSO regression. A radiomics signature (RS) developed with selected features was combined with clinical variables to construct RS+clinical model with multivariate logistic regression, which was internally validated by bootstrapping. Performance and clinical usefulness of RS+clinical model were assessed by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and decision curve analysis, respectively.ResultsAmong the 121 eligible patients, 51 achieved pCR (42.1%) after NCRT. Eighteen radiomics features were selected and incorporated into RS. The RS+clinical model has improved prediction performance for pCR compared with the clinical model (corrected area under the ROC curve, 0.84 vs. 0.70). At the 60% probability threshold cutoff (i.e., the patient would opt for observation if his probability of pCR was >60%), net 13% surgeries could be avoided by RS+clinical model, equivalent to implementing organ-saving strategy in 31.37% of the 51 true-pCR cases.ConclusionThe model built with CT radiomics features and clinical variables shows the potential of predicting pCR after NCRT; it provides significant clinical benefit in identifying qualified patients to receive individualized organ-saving treatment plans.

Irradiation structural damage (e.g., radiation tracks, amorphous layers, and vesicles) is widely observed in lunar soil grains. Previous experiments have revealed that irradiation damage is caused by the injection of solar wind and solar flare energetic particles. In this study, cordierite and gabbro were selected as analogs of shallow and deep excavated lunar crust materials for proton irradiation experiments. The fluence was 1.44 ± 0.03 × 1018 H+/cm2, which is equivalent to 102 years of average solar wind proton implantation on the Moon. Before and after irradiation, structural damage in samples is detected by slow positron annihilation technology (PAT), Doppler broadening (DB) measurement, focused ion beam (FIB), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The DB results showed the structural damage peaks of irradiated gabbro and cordierite were located at 40 and 45 nm. Hydrogen diffused to a deeper region and it reached beyond depths of 150 and 136 nm for gabbro and cordierite, respectively. Hydrogen atoms occupied the original vacancy defects and formed vacancy sites—hydrogen atom complexes, which affected the annihilation of positrons with electrons in the vacancy defects. All of the DB results were validated by TEM. This study proves that the positron annihilation technique has an excellent performance in the detection of defects in the whole structure of the sample. In combination with TEM and other detection methods, this technology could be used for the detection of structural damage in extraterrestrial samples.

The response control of a very large floating structure (VLFS) is a crucial issue that affects the stability and safety of the structure. This paper presents a vibration control method for stabilizing the motion of a multi-modular VLFS by using a set of stiffness-adjustable connectors. The proposed connector consists of a cylindrical spring with an embedded actuator, making its stiffness adjustable. In a case study, a layout for such connectors is suggested to reduce the surge, heave, pitch, and yaw motions of the VLFS in random seas. To control the vibration responses of the VLFS, a mathematical model of the floating structure with the proposed connectors is established. A state feedback control scheme is developed using Sequential Quadratic Programming, which is able to adapt to varying wave conditions. Numerical studies indicate that the control method based on the stiffness-adjustable connectors was able to greatly reduce the responses of the modules when compared to flexible connectors and was also able to reduce the connector loads when compared to hinged connectors. Most importantly, this control method enables the elimination of resonant responses by changing the system stiffness.

With the internationalization of traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) and the increasing use of herbal medicines around the world, there are concerns over their safety. In recent years, there have been some sporadic reports of pesticide residues in Chuanxiong Rhizoma (CX), although the lack of systematic and comprehensive analyses of pesticide residues and evaluations of toxicological risks in human health has increased the uncertainty of the potential effects of pesticides exposure in humans. This study aimed to clarify the status of pesticide residues and to determine the health risks of pesticide residues in CX. The findings of this study revealed that 99 batches of CX samples contained pesticide residues ranging from 0.05 to 3013.17 μg/kg. Here, 6–22 kinds of pesticides were detected in each sample. Prometryn, carbendazim, dimethomorph, chlorpyrifos, chlorantraniliprole, pyraclostrobin, and paclobutrazol were the most frequently detected pesticides, with detection rates of 68.69–100%. Insecticides and fungicides accounted for 43.23% and 37.84% of the total pesticides detected, respectively. Here, 86.87% of the pesticide content levels were lower than 50 μg/kg, and a small number of samples contained carbofuran, dimethoate, and isofenphos-methyl exceeding the maximum residue levels (MRLs). A risk assessment based on the hazard quotient/hazard index (HQ/HI) approach revealed that the short-term, long-term, and cumulative risks of pesticide residues in CX are well below the levels that may pose a health risk. Worryingly, six banned pesticides (carbofuran, phorate sulfone, phorate-sulfoxide, isofenphos-methyl, terbufos-sulfone, and terbufoxon sulfoxide) were detected. This study has improved our understanding of the potential exposure risk of pesticide multi-residues in CX. The results of the study will have a positive impact on improving the quality and safety of CX and the development of MRLs for pesticide residues.

In this study, membrane fabrication was achieved by two different methods: (i) self-assembly and (ii) physical blending of TiO2 in PES membrane for humic acid filtration. The TiO2 nanoparticles were self-assembled by using TBT as the precursor and pluronic F127 as triblock copolymers around the membrane pores. This was achieved by manipulating the hydrolysis and condensation reaction of TBT precursors during the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process. On the other hand, the TiO2 was physically blended as a comparison to the previous method. The characteristic of the membrane was analysed to explore the possibility of enhancing the membrane antifouling mechanism and the membrane flux. The membrane morphology, pore size, porosity, and contact angle were characterised. Both methods proved to be able to enhance the antifouling properties and flux performance. The HA rejection increased up to 95% with membrane flux 55.40 kg m−2 h−1. The rejection rate was not significantly improved for either method. However, the antifouling characteristic for the self-assembly TiO2/PES membrane was better than the physically blended membrane. This was found to be due to the high surface hydrophilicity of the MM membrane, which repelled the hydrophobic HA and consequently blocked the HA adsorption onto the surface.

Radiotherapy plays a major role in the curative treatment of head and neck cancer, either as a single modality therapy, or in combination with surgery or chemotherapy, or both. Despite advances to limit radiation-induced side-effects, the major salivary glands are often affected. This frequently leads to hyposalivation which causes an increased risk for xerostomia, dental caries, mucositis, and malnutrition culminating in a significant impact on patients' quality of life. Previous research demonstrated that loss of salivary function is associated with a decrease in polarity regulators and an increase in nuclear Yap localization in a putative stem and progenitor cell (SPC) population. Yap activation has been shown to be essential for regeneration in intestinal injury models; however, the highest levels of nuclear Yap are observed in irradiated salivary SPCs that do not regenerate the gland. Thus, elucidating the inputs that regulate nuclear Yap localization and determining the role that Yap plays within the entire tissue following radiation damage and during regeneration is critical. In this study, we demonstrate that radiation treatment increases nuclear Yap localization in acinar cells and Yap-regulated genes in parotid salivary tissues. Conversely, administration of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1), known to restore salivary function in mouse models, reduces nuclear Yap localization and Yap transcriptional targets to levels similar to untreated tissues. Activation of Rho-associated protein kinase (ROCK) using calpeptin results in increased Yap-regulated genes in primary acinar cells while inhibition of ROCK activity (Y-27632) leads to decreased Yap transcriptional targets. These results suggest that Yap activity is dependent on ROCK activity and provides new mechanistic insights into the regulation of radiation-induced hyposalivation.

ABSTRACT: Rice farming is characterized by various factors including environmental and non-environmental factors. The current paper analyses the influence of households’ characteristics, and perceptions of weather variability on rice yield. Authors used primary data collected from small-scale rice farmers in the Mbeya region of Tanzania. Garret technique and Stata software were used for data analyses. Results confirmed that farmer’s education, marital status, gender, and land ownership have a positive influence on rice yield. Thus, for every 1% increase in each variable increases rice yield by 14%, 98%, 26%, and 21% respectively. Owing to empirical results on farmers’ perceptions, it is confirmed that if the drought period increased by 1%, would on average reduce rice yield by 20%. The majority of farmers (70%) have perceived that drought period reduced their rice yield. In addition, farmers’ used averagely less quantity of rice seeds which have impaired their rice yields. If farmers increased the seed quantity by 1%, rice yields would increase by 17%. Our findings also revealed that the previous market price has positive association with the next seasons’ rice yield. Therefore, our study concluded that among households’ variables and their perceptions have positive implications on rice yield; however, with the empirical analyses other variables were insignificant due to multicollinearity effects. Authors recommended to the government and other responsible organizations to capitalize on irrigation infrastructures, agricultural extension and technological services to restraint the enduring food insecurity coercions in Tanzania.

Background: The incidence of measles in Yunnan Province among vaccine target-age children has decreased markedly after attaining and sustaining high 2-dose coverage of measles containing vaccine (MCV) through routine immunization services and supplementary immunization activities (SIAs). Most cases of measles now occur among adults. In 2015, we investigated a measles outbreak among adults to determine transmission patterns and the potential role of nosocomial transmission. Methods: We enhanced measles surveillance using retrospective active case search. We conducted case investigations to determine sources of infection and routes of transmission; laboratory testing included serologic and molecular diagnostic methods. Results: Twenty-two outbreak-associated cases of measles were identified; most (86.36%) were among individuals 20 to 39 years of age (range, 7 months to 43 years). We interviewed 19 individuals who had acquired measles. The first 3 cases were infected in Tibet; 12 (63%) were hospital-acquired infections; 2 (11%) were community-acquired; and 2 (11%) were family-contact cases. We conducted outbreak response immunization (ORI) that provided MCV without regard to vaccination status; 10,596 residents between 20 and 40 years of age were vaccinated. A serological survey conducted during the ORI showed that 84% of the 20–40 year-olds were immune to measles prior to vaccination. Post-vaccination serological testing showed 100% were immune. Conclusions: Despite high population immunity among children and adolescents, imported measles virus transmission occurred among adults in a provincial cross-border area. Nosocomial transmission and measles immunity gaps among adults poses a threat to measles elimination and highlights the strategy of targeting adults during ORI to outbreaks with adult-to-adult transmission.

Abstract Background Radiation-induced lung toxicity (RILT) is a severe complication of radiotherapy in patients with thoracic tumors. Through proteomics, we have previously identified vitronectin (VTN) as a potential biomarker for patients with lung toxicity of grade ≥ 2 radiation. Herein, we explored the molecular mechanism of VTN in the process of RILT. Methods In this study, lentivirus encoding for VTN and VTN-specific siRNA were constructed and transfected into the cultured fibroblasts and C57BL mice. Real-time PCR, western blot and ELISA were used to examine expression of collagens and several potential proteins involved in lung fibrosis. Hematoxylin–eosin and immunohistochemical staining were used to assess the fibrosis scores of lung tissue from mice received irradiation. Results The expression of VTN was up-regulated by irradiation. The change trend of collagens, TGF-β expression and p-ERK, p-AKT, and p-JNK expression levels were positively related with VTN mRNA level. Furthermore, overexpression of VTN significantly increased the expression level of α-SMA, as well as the degree of lung fibrosis in mice at 8 and 12 weeks post-irradiation. By contrast, siRNA VTN induced opposite results both in vitro and in vivo. Conclusions VTN played a positive role in the lung fibrosis of RILT, possibly through modulation of fibrosis regulatory pathways and up-regulating the expression levels of fibrosis-related genes. Taken together, all the results suggested that VTN had a novel therapeutic potential for the treatment of RILT.

Abstract Background Spontaneous recovery from articular cartilage injury is difficult, and the ongoing progression of disease can eventually lead to osteoarthritis. Currently, there is no effective non-surgical treatment for articular cartilage injury. Arthroscopic debridement and microfracture surgery are performed for fibrocartilage repair. But fibrocartilage is different from normal articular cartilage, and functional recovery is not satisfactory. Therefore, it is necessary to develop more effective techniques for articular cartilage repair. Progress in material science, cell biology, biomechanics, and bioreactor technology has allowed the development of biomimetic, tissue-engineered osteochondral composites that have shown potential for the repair of damaged cartilage. We prepared biomimetic, tissue-engineered cartilage scaffolds optimized for biochemical composition and structural characteristics. Based on the experience of our pre-clinical studies on animals, a human articular cartilage acellular matrix scaffold was prepared and is in clinical use. The combination of autologous chondrocytes and scaffolds has shown satisfactory results in repairing cartilage defects in preliminary experiments. Methods This is a prospective randomized controlled trial. One hundred patients with full-thickness cartilage injury of the knee will be randomly divided into two groups to receive treatment with either tissue-engineered cartilage constructed using biomimetic cartilage extracellular-matrix-oriented scaffolds combined with autologous chondrocytes, or arthroscopic debridement and microfracture surgery. There will be five visiting time points: at baseline, then at 3, 6, 12, and 18 months postoperatively. The primary outcome will be therapeutic efficacy as assessed by the Lysholm score at 12 months postoperatively. The secondary outcomes will be the International Knee Documentation Committee score, Visual Analog Scale score, and cartilage injury and repair as assessed by magnetic resonance imaging as well as the incidence of postoperative adverse events. Discussion This trial will attempt to verify the use of tissue-engineered cartilage constructed using autologous chondrocytes combined with allogeneic, acellular cartilage matrix for the repair of cartilage defects, thereby providing favorable evidence for its use in clinical practice. Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) has been suffering from severe groundwater storage (GWS) consumption and land subsidence (LS) for a long period. The overexploitation of groundwater brings about severe land subsidence, which affects the safety and development of BTH. In this paper, we utilized multi-frame synthetic aperture radar datasets obtained by the Rardarsat-2 satellite to monitor land subsidence’s temporal and spatial distribution in the BTH from 2012 to 2016 based on multi-temporal interferometric synthetic aperture radar (MT-InSAR). In addition, we also employed the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mascon datasets acquired by the Center for Space Research (CSR) and Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to obtain the GWS anomalies (GWSA) of BTH from 2003 to 2016. Then we evaluate the accuracy of the results obtained. Furthermore, we explored the relationship between the regional GWSA and the average cumulative subsidence in the BTH. The total volume change of subsidence is 59.46% of the total volume change of groundwater storage. Moreover, the long-term decreasing trend of the GWSA (14.221 mm/year) and average cumulative subsidence (17.382 mm/year) show a relatively high consistency. Finally, we analyze the heterogeneity of GWS change (GWSC) and LS change (LSC) in the four typical areas by the Lorenz curve model. The implementation of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (MSWDP) affects the heterogeneity of GWSC and LSC. It can be seen that the largest heterogeneity of LSC lags behind the GWSC in the Tianjin-Langfang-Hengshui-Baoding area. The largest uneven subsidence in Beijing and Tianjin occurred in 2015, and the largest uneven subsidence in Hengshui-Baoding occurred in 2014. After that, the heterogeneity of subsidence gradually tends to stable.

In this study, the carbothermic reduction and nitridation mechanism of vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite concentrate are investigated in terms of phase transformation, microstructure transformation, and thermodynamic analyses. The differences in the reaction behavior of titanomagnetite and ilmenite in vanadium-bearing titanomagnetite concentrate, as well as the distribution characteristic of V in the roasted products, are emphatically studied. It is observed that the reaction sequences of titanomagnetite and ilmenite transformations into nitride are as follows: Fe3−xTixO4→Fe2TiO4→FeTiO3→M3O5→(Ti, V)(N, C); FeTiO3→M3O5→Ti(N, C). The reduction of M3O5 to TiN is the rate-limiting step of the entire reaction, and metal iron is an important medium for transferring C for the reduction of M3O5. Titanomagnetite is faster to convert into nitride than ilmenite is, and the reasons for this are discussed in detail. During the entire roasting process, V mainly coexists with Ti and seems to facilitate the conversion of titanium oxides into (Ti, V)(N, C).

Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) and subsequent heat-treatments (HT) are necessary for titanium aluminide (TiAl) casting components. But there are few studies carefully comparing the microstructure changes from the initial as-cast condition to the final heat-treated condition. In this study, the microstructures of Ti-47Al-2Cr-2Nb (at%) alloy in the as-cast, as-HIPed and as-heat-treated conditions were characterized by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The mechanical properties after HTs were determined by the tensile tests at 700 °C. The results show that after HIP and HTs, all the microstructures exhibit a nearly lamellar (NL) structure and can be divided into an edge region and a central area. The microstructure after HIP in the edge region is normal, while distorted lamellae and many fine recrystallized grains exist in the central area. The yield strengths after three HTs are nearly the same, but the elongation after the HT at 1310 °C is much more than that after HTs at 1185 °C and 1280 °C. A refinement of colony size induced by distorted lamellae in as-HIPed condition is considered responsible for the great improvement in elongation.

In a nuclear emergency, the application of in situ spectrometers for monitoring environmental radioactivity is significantly important, as information on the type and activity of radionuclides released from the accident can be obtained quickly. However, in emergency environmental radiological monitoring, a balance between energy resolution and detecting efficiency must be considered in selecting an appropriate detector. In this study, in situ gamma spectrometry was conducted with the LaBr3 detector to determine the radioactivity of seawater at the discharging outlet of a coastal nuclear power plant in southeast China. The results show that the LaBr3 scintillator has excellent energy resolution and detection efficiency, making it a promising detector for emergency monitoring.

In order to solve trace-level steroid estrogen pollution in groundwater and surface water, a SPE-GC-MS approach to determine five steroid estrogens (SEs), E1, 17α-E2, 17β-E2, EE2 and E3, by optimizing of solid phase extraction (SPE), derivatization conditions and the secondary purification process of complex samples has been developed. The results show that Oasis HLB column, ethyl acetate elution and derivatizing at 40℃ for 20 min can achieve the best results for extraction. Moreover, the Generik NAX column activated by methyl is suitable for the secondary purification of complex samples. The linear ranges of E1, 17α-E2, and 17β-E2 are 5-1000 ng/L, whereas those of EE2 and E3 are 10-1000 ng/L. The detection and quantitation limits are 2-3 ng/L and 6.5-10 ng/L, respectively. The standard solution added recoveries of water samples range from 80% to 120%. The relative standard deviations of daily peak areas in the SEs determination range from 6.8% to 10%. This method was used to determine the SEs pollution levels of waters from pond, river, groundwater and sewage treatment plant effluent and results show that this detection technique can be effectively applied to the identification and evaluation of estrogen risk in surface water and groundwater samples.

Abstract Background This work aims to assess the feasibility of selectively sparing the hippocampus during prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) for small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Methods SCLC patients with brain metastases (BMs) diagnosed with MRI were enrolled. Lesions localized to the neural stem cell (NSC) compartments [subventricular zone (SVZ) or hippocampus] were analyzed. Patients were categorized by the total number of intracranial metastases, the therapy processes and the symptoms. Hippocampi and enhanced lesions within 15 mm from the hippocampus were contoured. IMRT treatment plans were generated for hippocampal avoidance (HA)-PCI (25Gy in 10 fractions). Results From Jan 2011 to Oct 2014, 1511 metastases were identified in 238 patients. The overall ratio of metastatic lesions located in NSC regions was 2.0% in the 1511 total metastases and 9.7% in the 238 overall patients. Among the NSC region metastases, 15 (1.0%) lesions involved the HA region of 14 (5.9%) patients and another 15 (1.0%) involved the SVZ of 15 (6.3%) patients. The present meta-analysis was conducted to compare the clinical effect and patient experience of laparoendoscopic single-site varicocelectomy (LESSV) and conventional laparoscopic varicocelectomy. The candidate studies were included after literature search of database Cochrane Library, PubMed, EMBASE, and MEDLINE. Related information on essential data and outcome measures was extracted from the eligible studies by two independent authors, and a meta-analysis was conducted using STATA 12.0 software. Subgroup analyses were conducted by study design (RCT and non-RCT). The odds ratio (OR) or standardized mean difference (SMD) and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were used to estimate the outcome measures. Seven articles were included in our meta-analysis. The results indicated that patient who had undergone LESSV had a shorter duration of back to work (overall: SMD = −1.454, 95% CI: −2.502-−0.405, P = 0.007; non-RCT: SMD = −2.906, 95% CI: −3.796-−2.017, P = 0.000; and RCT: SMD = −0.841, 95% CI: −1.393-−0.289, P = 0.003) and less pain experience at 3 h or 6 h (SMD = −0.447, 95% CI: −0.754-−0.139, P = 0.004), day 1 (SMD = −0.477, 95% CI: −0.905-−0.05, P = 0.029), and day 2 (SMD = −0.612, 95% CI: −1.099-−0.125, P = 0.014) postoperatively based on RCT studies. However, the meta-analyses based on operation time, clinical effect (improvement of semen quality and scrotal pain relief), and complications (hydrocele and recurrence) yielded nonsignificant results. In conclusion, LESSV had a rapid recovery and less pain experience over conventional laparoscopic varicocelectomy. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the two varicocelectomy techniques in terms of the clinical effect and the incidence of hydrocele and varicocele recurrence. More high-quality studies are warranted for a comprehensive conclusion.

The intercalation of metal ions in layered structures has a wide variety of applications, from energy storage to environmental remediation. Here the authors report that layered telluride structures can selectively bind transition metals and this intercalation can occur in solid state at mild conditions.

Dense false target jamming can affect radar detection performance severely. A method of dense false targets jamming recognition based on time-frequency atomic decomposition theory and support vector machine (SVM) is proposed to solve the difficulty of dense false targets jamming identification. According to the feature of ambiguity function of dense false targets jamming signal, a Gabor sub-dictionary which has adaptive variation with signal is designed. The signal is expanded into the corresponding Gabor time-frequency dictionary by sparse decomposition. After Gabor atomic time-frequency parameters are extracted as individual feature vectors, SVM is utilised for classification and recognition. The experimental results show that the extracted Gabor atomic time-frequency parameters can effectively represent the essential features of target and dense false targets jamming, respectively, and this method has a high recognition rate.

Positive attitude to service leadership is fundamental for the development of successful leadership qualities in the service-dominated economy. The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the 46-item Service Leadership Attitude Scale (SLA) in Hong Kong. A total of 2,240 undergraduate students in Hong Kong (mean age = 20.44±1.64 years; 66.9% were female) completed a questionnaire containing the 46-item SLA and other leadership-related scales. The psychometric properties of SLA were assessed using confirmatory factor analyses (CFA), reliability analyses, measurement invariance tests, and convergent validity test. Previous exploratory factor analyses suggested a seven-factor model of SLA which was supported by CFA in this study. By adding an additional dimension (“Implicit leadership theory”) in the scale, the final eight-factor model with 46 items showed superior fit using CFA. Factorial invariance tests showed that the factor structure was invariant in terms of construct dimensionality, factor loadings, intercepts, and factor covariance across gender and subgroups split based on “odd” and “even” case numbers. Convergent validity tests showed that the scale scores were correlated with several leadership-related scales. The scale and subscales also demonstrated good internal consistency reliability. This study is the first scientific work to validate a measure of attitude to service leadership via CFA. It contributes significantly to the development and validation of measures of attitude to service leadership, particularly in the higher education sector.

Radiotherapy is a common treatment option for head and neck cancer patients; however, the surrounding healthy salivary glands are often incidentally irradiated during the process. As a result, patients often experience persistent xerostomia and hyposalivation, which deceases their quality of life. Clinically, there is currently no standard of care available to restore salivary function. Repair of epithelial wounds involves cellular proliferation and establishment of polarity in order to regenerate the tissue. This process is partially mediated by protein kinase C zeta (PKCζ), an apical polarity regulator; however, its role following radiation damage is not completely understood. Using an in vivo radiation model, we show a significant decrease in active PKCζ in irradiated murine parotid glands, which correlates with increased proliferation that is sustained through 30 days post-irradiation. Additionally, salivary glands in PKCζ null mice show increased basal proliferation which radiation treatment did not further potentiate. Radiation damage also activates Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), a proliferation-inducing mitogen-activated protein kinase normally inhibited by PKCζ. In both a PKCζ null mouse model and in primary salivary gland cell cultures treated with a PKCζ inhibitor, there was increased JNK activity and production of downstream proliferative transcripts. Collectively, these findings provide a potential molecular link by which PKCζ suppression following radiation damage promotes JNK activation and radiation-induced compensatory proliferation in the salivary gland.

As a conserved kinase complex, sucrose non-fermenting-1-related protein kinase 1 (SnRK1) is a major regulator of plant growth and development. In our previous study, overexpression of MhSnRK1 in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) modified fruit maturation: the transgenic fruit ripened earlier than the wild type (WT). However, the mechanism by which fruit maturation is regulated by SnRK1 is not clear; therefore, the test materials used were the transgenic tomato lines (OE-1, OE-3, and OE-4) overexpressing the coding gene of peach [Prunus persica (L.) Batsch] SNF1-related kinase α subunit (PpSnRK1α). The activity of SnRK1 kinase in transgenic tomato lines OE-1, OE-3, and OE-4 was higher than that in the WT at different periods of fruit development; in the pink coloring period the SnRK1 kinase activity increased the most, with 23.5, 28.8, and 21.4% increases, respectively. The content of starch and soluble sugars in red ripe transgenic fruit significantly increased, while the soluble protein and titratable acid content decreased significantly. We also found that the tomatoes overexpressing PpSnRK1α matured approximately 10 days earlier than the WT. Moreover, the yeast-two-hybrid assay showed that PpSnRK1α interacted with the MADS-box transcription factor (TF) SIRIN, which acts as an essential regulator of tomato fruit ripening. The BiFC technology further validated the location of the PpSnRK1α interaction sites within the nucleus. The quantitative real-time PCR analysis showed that RIN expression was up-regulated by PpSnRK1α overexpression; the expression of RIN-targeted TF genes NOR and FUL1 increased during different stages of fruit development. The expression of key genes, ACS2, ACS4, and E8, in ethylene synthesis also changed accordingly, and the ethylene emitted by the red ripe fruit increased by 36.1–43.9% compared with the WT. These results suggest that PpSnRK1α interacts with SIRIN, increasing the expression of RIN, thereby regulating the expression of downstream ripening-related genes, finally promoting fruit ripening.

The research on international trade competitiveness is progressing continuously. Environmental factors have been gradually considered in the competitiveness of international trade. However, the green assessment system of international trade competitiveness is not perfect. Building a model based on the trade economy is complex. This study combines environmental pollution data based on the forest processing industry with trade flows. Environmental trade competitiveness, pollution treatment, and trade scale were selected as the three criterion levels to construct an assessment system. The weight and score of each index were calculated by the overall entropy method. The overall entropy method is more comprehensive than the traditional entropy weight method due to introduce longitudinal comparisons of time and category. This method is a dynamic evaluation model with analysis of three-dimensional sequential data tables. The use of this method enables the assessment model to analyze more comprehensively the green level of a country’s trade in wooden forest products in terms of time and product category. The green level of chemical wood pulp and sawn timber trade in China is at a high level. The pollution treatment and trade scale of chemical wood pulp and sawn timber attained a medium level of matching. The trades in particle board, hardboard, newsprint, carton board, and wrapping paper are at medium levels of green. The trades in medium density fiberboard and plywood have poor levels of green and need to improve their green production capacity. It is suggested that China should increase investment in scientific research, as well as establish policies to restrict and treat pollution in the industry of wooden forest products, while increasing the export volumes of products with high added value. China should attach importance to the pollution resulting from the manufacture of wooden forest products. The state should support policies for these producers reducing production emissions.

The development of globalization and the acceleration of informatization have made the competition between enterprises more and more fierce, and organizations must respond to new opportunities and challenges through organizational change. Organizational change also makes employees' working environment more and more complex, occupational uncertainties and risks are increasing, which in turn brings employees psychological insecurity and job burnout. In this paper, through combing the related research of psychological safety and job burnout, the negative relationship between psychological safety and individual job burnout is verified by empirical analysis, and according to the conclusion, relevant suggestions are proposed to the organization management, trying to help the organization take effective measures to satisfy employees' psychological safety needs and reduce the phenomenon of job burnout.
