Brain and muscle arnt-like protein 1 (Bmal1) is a crucial transcription factor, regulating circadian rhythm and involved in multiple heart diseases. However, it is unknown whether Bmal1 promotes diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) pathogenesis. The objective of this investigation was to ascertain the vital role of Bmal1 in the progression of DCM. Mice with T2D and H9c2 cardiomyoblasts exposed to high glucose and palmitic acid (HGHP) were used. Cardiomyocyte-specific knockout mouse of Bmal1 (CKB) was also generated, and cardiac Bmal1 was overexpressed in type 2 diabetes (T2D) mice using an adeno-associated virus. Bmal1 gene recombinant adenovirus was used to either knockdown or overexpress in H9c2 cardiomyoblasts. Bmal1 expression was significantly altered in diabetic mice hearts. Bmal1 downregulation in CKB and T2D mice heart accelerated cardiac hypertrophy and diastolic dysfunction, while Bmal1 overexpression ameliorated these pathological changes in DCM mice. Furthermore, DCM mice had significant mitochondrial ultrastructural defects, reactive oxygen species accumulation, and apoptosis, which could be alleviated by overexpressing Bmal1. In H9c2 cardiomyoblasts, genetic downregulation of Bmal1 or HGHP markedly decreased the binding of Bcl2 to IP3R, thus increasing Ca2+ release to mitochondria through mitochondria-associated endoplasmic reticulum membranes. Importantly, chromatin immunoprecipitation revealed Bmal1 could bind directly to the Bcl2 gene promoter region. Bmal1 overexpression augmented the Bmal1/Bcl2 binding, enhancing the inhibition of Bcl2 on IP3R activity, thus alleviating mitochondrial Ca2+ overload and subsequent cell apoptosis. These results show that Bmal1 is involved in the DCM development through Bcl2/IP3R-mediated mitochondria Ca2+ overload. Therapy targeting the circadian clock (Bmal1) can treat DCM.

This study examines the impact of firms' targeted poverty alleviation activities on corporate value and how corporate internal governance regulates this relationship. This study uses Fixed Effects and System GMM estimations to test hypotheses by analyzing data from Chinese non-financial listed firms from 2016 to 2021. The results demonstrate that corporate targeted poverty alleviation and internal corporate governance control affect company value and governance. Corporate value increases as a result of effective internal governance. Internal governance control enhances the positive relationship between the firm's targeted poverty reduction and value creation. This study's findings are robust to alternative measures of poverty alleviation initiatives. Furthermore, heterogeneity analysis reveals that non-SOE firms, small and low-leverage firms engaging in anti-poverty activities are in a better position to achieve value creation. This study adds to the literature on poverty reduction, sustainable corporate value creation, and corporate internal governance control. Study results may help policymakers and managers in evaluating their business strategies by focusing more on fulfilling social responsibilities to eradicate poverty from the region by improving governance policies to generate sustainable value for the firm.

In order to screen Perilla resources suitable for both medicine and food, basic nutritional quality, main active components and mineral content were determined in 14 purple Perilla frutescens lines (No.C01~C14), which were collected from Guizhou, Hunan, Shanxi and Heilongjiang provinces. The nutritional quality of Perilla leaves was evaluated by factor analysis and systematic cluster analysis. In addition, the essential oil types of the Perilla lines were also analyzed. The results showed that the content of crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, soluble protein, total free amino acids and soluble sugar were 12.87~19.52, 2.07~4.19, 6.59~9.84 g/100 g, 0.99~2.49, 0.17~1.57 and 28.90~61.54 g/kg, respectively. The contents of flavonoids, total phenols and vitamin C were 13.28~24.35 g/kg, 59.26~99.18 mg/kg and 1.16~8.17 mg/100 g. The content of Fe, Zn, Mn and Cu was 13.96~27.86, 5.60~8.94, 4.63~19.74 and 0.52~2.61 mg/kg, respectively. Factor analysis showed that the four common factors of ''sugar and mineral elements'', ''active substances'', ''protein'' and ''fat'' could be extracted from the multitudinous nutrient factors of Perilla leaves. The best comprehensive quality performance was C05, followed by C12, C11, C06 and C10. Cluster analysis indicated that 14 Perilla lines could be divided into three groups, they were ''high-sugar and high-mineral group'', ''high-fat and high-protein and high-active ingredient group'' and ''high-fiber and low-nutrition group'', including 8, 3 and 3 lines correspondingly. The essential oil detection and composition analysis showed that the content of essential oil ranged from 0.25% to 1.09% in 14 Perilla lines. The chemotype of essential oil of 14 Perilla lines could be divided into four types: PA type (rich in L-perillaldehyde), pp-m type (rich in 1,3-benzodioxole, 4-methoxy-6-(2-propenyl)-), atypical EK+type (mainly containing elsholtzia ketone) and MP type (rich in 1-(furan-2-yl)-4-methylpentan-1-one), including 7, 1, 2 and 4 Perilla lines respectively. After comprehensive evaluation, it was concluded that C05 was the best line in quality and was also rich in PA-type essential oil, which could be developed into both medicine and food.

The objective was to evaluate the effect of different standardised ileal digestible lysine (SID-Lys) levels on performance, nutrient digestibility, serum metabolites, and carcase and meat traits of Yacha pigs. A total of 50 pigs were blocked by body weight and randomly assigned to five dietary treatments with six replicate pens (2 pigs/pen) per treatment using a randomised complete block design. Five diets in mash form were formulated to contain SID-Lys at 0.57%, 0.62%, 0.67%, 0.72%, 0.77% of diet in phase 1 (15 ∼ 30 kg), at 0.40%, 0.48%, 0.56%, 0.64%, 0.72% of diet in phase 2 (30 ∼ 50 kg), and at 0.30%, 0.39%, 0.48%, 0.57%, 0.66% of diet in phase 3 (50 ∼ 90 kg), respectively. The results showed that the average daily gain and gain to feed ratio increased with increasing dietary Lys levels in phases 1 and 2 (p ≤ 0.05). Abstract Background Organic selenium supplementation during gestation improves the antioxidant status and reproductive performance of sows and increases the antioxidative capacity of the intestines of their offspring. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of maternal basel diet (control) supplemented with an organic Se, 2-hydroxy-4-methylselenobutanoic acid (HMSeBA), or inorganic sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) during gestation on the antioxidant status and development of muscle in newborn and weaned piglets. Newborn piglets before colostrum intake and weaned piglets were selected for longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle collection and analysis. Results The results showed that maternal HMSeBA supplementation increased the muscle area and content of Se in the LD muscle of newborn piglets, improved gene expression of selenoproteins, and decreased oxidative status in the LD muscle of both newborn and weaned piglets compared with the control. The expression of muscle development-related genes of newborn piglets in the HMSeBA group was lower than in the control group, whereas the expression of MRF4 in weaned piglets was higher in the HMSeBA group than in the control and Na2SeO3 groups. In addition, HMSeBA supplementation decreased the mRNA expressions of myosin heavy chains (MyHC) IIx and MyHC IIb and the percentage of MyHC IIb; increased the expression of PGC-1α in the LD muscle of newborn piglets; increased the gene expression of MyHC IIa; and decreased the protein expression of slow MyHC and the activity of malate dehydrogenase in the LD muscle of weaned piglets compared with the control group. Conclusions Maternal HMSeBA supplementation during gestation can improve the antioxidative capacity of the muscle of their offspring and promote the maturity of muscle fibres in weaned offspring.

The integration of agricultural Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain has become the key technology of precision agriculture. How to protect data privacy and security from data source is one of the difficult issues in agricultural IoT research. This work integrates cryptography, blockchain and Interplanetary File System (IPFS) technologies, and proposes a general IoT blockchain terminal system architecture, which strongly supports the integration of the IoT and blockchain technology. This research innovatively designed a fine-grained and flexible terminal data access control scheme based on the ciphertext-policy attribute-based encryption (CP-ABE) algorithm. Based on CP-ABE and DES algorithms, a hybrid data encryption scheme is designed to realize 1-to-N encrypted data sharing. A "horizontal + vertical" IoT data segmentation scheme under blockchain technology is proposed to realize the classified release of different types of data on the blockchain. The experimental results show that the design scheme can ensure data access control security, privacy data confidentiality, and data high-availability security. This solution significantly reduces the complexity of key management, can realize efficient sharing of encrypted data, flexibly set access control strategies, and has the ability to store large data files in the agricultural IoT.

Abstract Background Tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 6 (TRAF6) can regulate the activation of inflammatory signaling pathways by acting as an E3 ubiquitin ligase, which enhances B cell activation. This study aimed to evaluate the expression of TRAF6 in the peripheral blood B cells of myasthenia gravis (MG) patients and analyze the relationships between TRAF6 expression and clinical characteristics. Method In our study, the expression level of TRAF6 in peripheral blood B cells of 89 patients was measured by flow cytometry compared with that of healthy subjects. The effects of disease severity, MG classification and immunotherapy on TRAF6 expression level were also analyzed. Results In our study, TRAF6 expression was elevated in CD19+ B cells and CD19+CD27+ memory B cells in generalized MG (GMG) patients compared with ocular MG (OMG) patients (p = 0.03 and p = 0.03, respectively). Objective To compare the blood loss, transfusion rates and complications between the aspirin and non‐aspirin group in unilateral and bilateral total knee arthroplasties (TKAs) with a nested case–control design. Methods The present study retrospectively selected TKA cases from the Joint Arthroplasty Database at the Peking Union Medical College Hospital from January 2014 to December 2019 following strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, and divided them into the aspirin and non‐aspirin group based on the use of aspirin preoperatively. Bleeding was measured by blood loss, transfusion rate, drainage volume, hemoglobin (HGB) and hematocrit (HCT), while complications (cardiovascular events, venous thromboembolism events, cerebrovascular events and wound events) were compared between the groups. Student's unpaired t‐test and Mann–Whitney U‐test were used to compare the differences of continuous variables between the two groups while chi‐square test and Fisher's exact test were applied in categorical variables. Abstract Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Chinese Medicine (CM) on the health condition of the post-COVID-19 patients, particularly with the CM Syndrome diagnosis and Body Constitutions (BC), as well as related clinical characteristics. Methods 150 participants who had COVID-19 and discharged from Hong Kong public hospitals were recruited. They were provided with three to six months of CM treatments, during which assessments were made per month and at follow-up on their CM syndromes, BC, lung functions, and other medical conditions. This study was divided into two parts: (1) Retrospective survey: medical history of participants during COVID-19 hospitalization was collected during the baseline visit; (2) Prospective observation and assessments: clinical symptoms, lung functions, and BC status were evaluated in participants receiving CM treatment based on syndrome differentiation and clinical symptoms. Results The median hospitalization period was 16 days. Symptoms were presented in 145 (96.6%) patients at the day they were diagnosed with COVID-19. Fever, fatigue, and dry cough were the most common symptoms, exhibiting in 59.3% (89 of 150), 55.3% (83 of 150), and 46% (70 of 150) participants, respectively. Among the 150 post-COVID patients, majority (71.3%) were of the two particular post-COVID CM Syndromes (Qi Deficiency of Lung and Spleen, and Qi and Yin Deficiency). Upon CM treatment, there was an observable increase in participants reaching a balanced BC (i.e. healthy body conditions). The increase was observed to be more prominent in those without the particular CM Syndromes compared to those with the CM Syndromes. Main clinical symptoms in participants with the CM Syndromes decreased upon CM treatment. Occurrence of fatigue also dropped after CM treatment though not all accompanied clinical symptoms were resolved fully. Further to the improvement in terms of CM assessments, lung functions of the participants were found to show improvement after treatment. Biliary adenofibroma is an extremely rare benign liver tumor, but it may be a precancerous lesion of cholangiocarcinoma. So far, only 29 cases have been reported in the literature. A 30-year-old woman was admitted to our department for upper abdomen mass. The computed tomography scan showed a huge cystic and partly substantial mass between the left lobe of the liver and the descending duodenum, which was considered to be an exophytic tumor derived from the left lobe of the liver. Laparoscopic liver segment IVb resection and cholecystectomy were performed. Microscopic examination showed that the tumor was composed of glandular cavities of varying sizes and fibrous interstitium. The glandular cavity was covered with cubic or columnar epithelium without atypia. Some of the mesenchymal cells are myofibroblast-like and spindle-shaped with red-stained cytoplasm. The mesenchymal cells in some areas proliferate densely with moderate atypia. It was considered to be an atypical biliary adenofibroma with focal necrosis and active cell proliferation which may have malignant transformation potential. There was no recurrence and metastasis at a 6-month follow-up. Biliary adenofibroma is a rare benign tumor derived from the bile duct, but it may progress to malignancy and develop distant metastasis. It is difficult to distinguish it from other liver tumors through imaging examination and the gold standard of diagnosis is histopathological examination. Close clinical follow-up is recommended.

This paper proposes an intelligent diagnosis framework of microgrid based on cloud–edge integration. First, the digital twin model of the microgrid is established on the cloud server. Based on the model, the operation data of the microgrid in various conditions can be obtained. Then, the neural network-based fault diagnosis model is trained on the cloud server by using the data provided by the digital twin model. Next, the trained neural network is downloaded to the edge device for the offline fault diagnosis of the microgrid. The proposed method is implemented based on the well-known digital twin platform CloudPSS and test results demonstrate the effectiveness. Extensive tests have been conducted on this framework using fully connected neural network algorithms with an accuracy rate of over 95%.

BackgroundGout is a common and debilitating condition that is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Despite advances in medical treatment, the global burden of gout continues to increase, particularly in high–sociodemographic index (SDI) regions. ObjectiveTo address the aforementioned issue, we used age-period-cohort (APC) modeling to analyze global trends in gout incidence and prevalence from 1990 to 2019. MethodsData were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 to assess all-age prevalence and age-standardized prevalence rates, as well as years lived with disability rates, for 204 countries and territories. APC effects were also examined in relation to gout prevalence. Future burden prediction was carried out using the Nordpred APC prediction of future incidence cases and the Bayesian APC model. ResultsThe global gout incidence has increased by 63.44% over the past 2 decades, with a corresponding increase of 51.12% in global years lived with disability. The sex ratio remained consistent at 3:1 (male to female), but the global gout incidence increased in both sexes over time. Notably, the prevalence and incidence of gout were the highest in high-SDI regions (95% uncertainty interval 14.19-20.62), with a growth rate of 94.3%. Gout prevalence increases steadily with age, and the prevalence increases rapidly in high-SDI quantiles for the period effect. Finally, the cohort effect showed that gout prevalence increases steadily, with the risk of morbidity increasing in younger birth cohorts. The prediction model suggests that the gout incidence rate will continue to increase globally. ConclusionsOur study provides important insights into the global burden of gout and highlights the need for effective management and prophylaxis of this condition. The APC model used in our analysis provides a novel approach to understanding the complex trends in gout prevalence and incidence, and our findings can inform the development of targeted interventions to address this growing health issue.

ABSTRACT MALDI-TOF MS is well-recognized for single microbial identification and widely used in research and clinical fields due to its specificity, speed of analysis, and low cost of consumables. Multiple commercial platforms have been developed and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization–time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has been used for microbial identification. However, microbes can present as a specific microbiota, and detection and classification remain a challenge. Here, we constructed several specific microbiotas and tried to classify them using MALDI-TOF MS. Different concentrations of nine bacterial strains (belonging to eight genera) constituted 20 specific microbiotas. Using MALDI-TOF MS, the overlap spectrum of each microbiota (MS spectra of nine bacterial strains with component percentages) could be classified by hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA). However, the real MS spectrum of a specific microbiota was different than that of the overlap spectrum of component bacteria. The MS spectra of specific microbiota showed excellent repeatability and were easier to classify by HCA, with an accuracy close to 90%. These results indicate that the widely used MALDI-TOF MS identification method for individual bacteria can be expanded to classification of microbiota. IMPORTANCE MALDI-TOF MS can be used to classify specific model microbiota. The actual MS spectrum of the model microbiota was not a simple superposition of every single bacterium in a certain proportion but had a specific spectral fingerprint. The specificity of this fingerprint can enhance the accuracy of microbiota classification.

The investigation of brain networks and neural circuits involves the crucial aspects of observing and modulating neurophysiological activity. Recently, opto-electrodes have emerged as an efficient tool for electrophysiological recording and optogenetic stimulation, which has greatly facilitated the analysis of neural coding. However, implantation and electrode weight control have posed significant challenges in achieving long-term and multi-regional brain recording and stimulation. To address this issue, we have developed a mold and custom-printed circuit board-based opto-electrode. We report successful opto-electrode placement and high-quality electrophysiological recordings from the default mode network (DMN) of the mouse brain. This novel opto-electrode facilitates synchronous recording and stimulation in multiple brain regions and holds promise for advancing future research on neural circuits and networks.

Summary: The Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) signals obtained from bacterial samples are specific and reproducible, making FT-IR an efficient tool for bacterial typing at a subspecies level. However, the typing accuracy could be affected by many factors, including sample preparation and spectral acquisition. Here, we present a unified protocol for bacterial typing based on FT-IR spectroscopy. We describe sample preparation from bacterial culture and FT-IR spectrum collection. BackgroundDistal hemophilic pseudotumor (HP) occurring distal to the wrist appear to be secondary to intraosseous hemorrhage, which develops rapidly and should be treated primarily with long-term replacement therapy and cast immobilization. Surgical removal or even amputation is indicated when conservative management fails to prevent progression. Here, a practical strategy was described for those patients who cannot afford the cost of routine coagulation factor replacement therapy, namely immediate surgical curettage and bone grafting as well as continuous follow-up.Case descriptionA 7-year-old boy with a history of mild hemophilia A was admitted to our medical center because of a 2-year history of progressive swelling and pain around right forearm and hand. Coagulation factor VIII level was 11.1% of normal with no inhibitor. Radiographs revealed expansile swelling, bone destruction, and deformity of the distal right radius and the second metacarpal bone. He was diagnosed with distal HP. Surgical procedure of curettage and bone grafting was performed. The function and appearance of the right wrist were almost normal without discomfort at the 101-month follow-up. Significantly, the same patient was hospitalized again because of a year-long progressive swelling and pain around the left hand when he was 14 years old. X-ray showed multiple bone destruction of the left proximal phalanges of left thumb, middle finger and little finger with local pathological fractures. Surgical procedure of HPs including curettage and bone grafting was performed. Postoperative recovery was good, and the last clinical follow-up at 18 months after the operation displayed a satisfactory shape and functional outcomes.ConclusionsCurettage and bone grafting prove to be safe and feasible for patients with distal HP and continuous follow-up of patients with distal HP is very vital for timely finding and then treating successive HP in developing countries.

IntroductionPiglets are more susceptible to weaning stress syndrome when fed high levels of plant-based proteins that contain abundant food antigens and anti-nutritional factors. Xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS) are a potential prebiotic that may improve the tolerance of weaned piglets to plant-based proteins. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of XOS supplementation in high and low plant-based protein diets on growth performance, gut morphology, short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, and gut microbiota of weaned piglets.MethodsA total of 128 weanling piglets with an average body weight (BW) of 7.63 ± 0.45 kg were randomly allocated to one of the four dietary treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, with two levels of plant-based proteins (d 1–14: 68.3 or 81.33%, d 15–28: 81.27 or 100%) and XOS complex (0 or 0.43%) over a 28-day trial.ResultsThe growth performance of piglets did not differ significantly among groups (P > 0.05). However, the diarrhea index of weaned piglets fed a high plant-based protein diet (HP) was significantly higher than that of those fed a low plant-based protein diet (LP) at days 1–14 and throughout the experimental period (P < 0.05). XOS treatment tended to reduce the diarrhea index at days 1–14 (P = 0.062) and during the whole experiment period (P = 0.083). However, it significantly increased the digestibility of organic matter at days 15–28 (P < 0.05). Moreover, dietary XOS supplementation increased ileal mucosa mRNA expression of occludin and ZO-1 (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the concentration of butyric acid (BA) in the cecal contents and in the concentrations of BA and valeric acid (VA) in colon contents were significantly elevated in the XOS groups (P < 0.05). Additionally, XOS optimized the gut flora by lowering the number of pathogenic bacteria such as p_Campylobacterota, thereby stabilizing the gut ecosystem.DiscussionIn conclusion, the HP diet aggravated diarrhea in weaned piglets while the XOS diet alleviated it by improving nutrient digestibility, protecting intestinal morphology, and optimizing the gut flora.

IntroductionGreater amounts of fertilizer are applied every year to meet the growing demand for food. Sugarcane is one of the important food sources for human beings.MethodsHere, we evaluated the effects of a sugarcane—Dictyophora indusiata (DI) intercropping system on soil health by conducting an experiment with three different treatments: (1) bagasse application (BAS process), (2) bagasse + DI (DIS process), and (3) the control (CK). We then analyzed soil chemistry, the diversity of soil bacteria and fungi, and the composition of metabolites to clarify the mechanism underlying the effects of this intercropping system on soil properties.Results and discussionSoil chemistry analyses revealed that the content of several soil nutrients such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) was higher in the BAS process than in the CK. In the DIS process, a large amount of soil P was consumed by DI. At the same time, the urease activity was inhibited, thus slowing down the loss of soil in the DI process, while the activity of other enzymes such as β-glucosidase and laccase was increased. It was also noticed that the content of lanthanum and calcium was higher in the BAS process than in the other treatments, and DI did not significantly alter the concentrations of these soil metal ions. Bacterial diversity was higher in the BAS process than in the other treatments, and fungal diversity was lower in the DIS process than in the other treatments. The soil metabolome analysis revealed that the abundance of carbohydrate metabolites was significantly lower in the BAS process than in the CK and the DIS process. The abundance of D(+)-talose was correlated with the content of soil nutrients. Path analysis revealed that the content of soil nutrients in the DIS process was mainly affected by fungi, bacteria, the soil metabolome, and soil enzyme activity. Our findings indicate that the sugarcane–DIS intercropping system can enhance soil health.

IntroductionVisceral motor responses (VMR) to graded colorectal distension (CRD) have been extensively implemented to assess the level of visceral pain in awake rodents, which are inevitably confounded by movement artifacts and cannot be conveniently implemented to assess invasive neuromodulation protocols for treating visceral pain. In this report, we present an optimized protocol with prolonged urethane infusion that enables robust and repeatable recordings of VMR to CRD in mice under deep anesthesia, providing a two-hour window to objectively assess the efficacy of visceral pain management strategies.MethodsDuring all surgical procedures, C57BL/6 mice of both sexes (8–12 weeks, 25–35 g) were anesthetized with 2% isoflurane inhalation. An abdominal incision was made to allow Teflon-coated stainless steel wire electrodes to be sutured to the oblique abdominal musculature. A thin polyethylene catheter (Φ 0.2 mm) was placed intraperitoneally and externalized from the abdominal incision for delivering the prolonged urethane infusion. A cylindric plastic-film balloon (Φ 8 mm x 15 mm when distended) was inserted intra-anally, and its depth into the colorectum was precisely controlled by measuring the distance between the end of the balloon and the anus. Subsequently, the mouse was switched from isoflurane anesthesia to the new urethane anesthesia protocol, which consisted of a bout of infusion (0.6 g urethane per kg weight, g/kg) administered intraperitoneally via the catheter and continuous low-dose infusion throughout the experiment at 0.15–0.23 g per kg weight per hour (g/kg/h).ResultsUsing this new anesthesia protocol, we systematically investigated the significant impact of balloon depth into the colorectum on evoked VMR, which showed a progressive reduction with increased balloon insertion depth from the rectal region into the distal colonic region. Intracolonic TNBS treatment induced enhanced VMR to CRD of the colonic region (>10 mm from the anus) only in male mice, whereas colonic VMR was not significantly altered by TNBS in female mice.DiscussionConducting VMR to CRD in anesthetized mice using the current protocol will enable future objective assessments of various invasive neuromodulatory strategies for alleviating visceral pain.

Abstract Background and aim Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has been found to attenuate cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. However, its effects and mechanism of action have not yet been clarified. It has been reported that cerebral I/R injury is closely associated not only with ferroptosis but also with inflammation. Hence, the current study aimed to investigate whether high‐frequency rTMS attenuates middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO)‐induced cerebral I/R injury and further to elucidate the mediatory role of ferroptosis and inflammation. Methods The protective effects of rTMS on experimental cerebral I/R injury were investigated using transient MCAO model rats. Neurological scores and pathological changes of cerebral ischemic cortex were assessed to evaluate the effects of rTMS on cerebral I/R injury. The involvement of ferroptosis and that of inflammation were examined to investigate the mechanism underlying the effects of rTMS. Results High‐frequency rTMS remarkably rescued the MCAO‐induced neurological deficits and morphological damage. rTMS treatment also increased the mRNA and protein expression of glutathione‐dependent peroxidase 4, decreased the mRNA and protein levels of acyl‐CoA synthetase long‐chain family member 4 and transferrin receptor in the cortex. Moreover, rTMS administration reduced the cerebrospinal fluid IL‐1β, IL‐6, and TNF‐α concentrations. Conclusion These findings implicated that high‐frequency rTMS alleviates MCAO‐induced cerebral I/R injury, and the underlying mechanism could involve the inhibition of ferroptosis and inflammation. Our study identifies rTMS as a promising therapeutic agent for the treatment of cerebral I/R injury. Moreover, the mechanistic insights into ferroptosis and inflammation advance our understanding of it as a potential therapeutic target for diseases beyond cerebral ischemia stroke.

Abstract Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a devastating and complicated disease with an unclear etiology. Femoral head‐preserving surgeries have been devoted to delaying and hindering the collapse of the femoral head since their introduction in the last century. However, the isolated femoral head‐preserving surgeries cannot prevent the natural progression of ONFH, and the combination of autogenous or allogeneic bone grafting often leads to many undesired complications. To tackle this dilemma, bone tissue engineering has been widely developed to compensate for the deficiencies of these surgeries. During the last decades, great progress has been made in ingenious bone tissue engineering for ONFH treatment. Herein, we comprehensively summarize the state‐of‐the‐art progress made in bone tissue engineering for ONFH treatment. The definition, classification, etiology, diagnosis, and current treatments of ONFH are first described. Then, the recent progress in the development of various bone‐repairing biomaterials, including bioceramics, natural polymers, synthetic polymers, and metals, for treating ONFH is presented. Thereafter, regenerative therapies for ONFH treatment are also discussed. Finally, we give some personal insights on the current challenges of these therapeutic strategies in the clinic and the future development of bone tissue engineering for ONFH treatment.

Aging is a biological process of progressive deterioration of physiological functions, which poses a serious threat to individual health and a heavy burden on public health systems. As population aging continues, research into anti-aging drugs that prolong life and improve health is of particular importance. In this study, the polysaccharide from stems and leaves of Chuanminshen violaceum was obtained with water extraction and alcohol precipitation, and then separated and purified with DEAE anion exchange chromatography and gel filtration to obtain CVP-AP-I. We gavaged natural aging mice with CVP-AP-I and performed serum biochemical analysis, histological staining, quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) and ELISA kit assays to analyze inflammation and oxidative stress-related gene and protein expression in tissues, and 16SrRNA to analyze intestinal flora. We found that CVP-AP-I significantly improved oxidative stress and inflammatory responses of the intestine and liver, restored the intestinal immune barrier, and balanced the dysbiosis of intestinal flora. In addition, we revealed the potential mechanism behind CVP-AP-I to improve intestinal and liver function by regulating intestinal flora balance and repairing the intestinal immune barrier to regulate the intestinal-liver axis. Our results indicated that C. violaceum polysaccharides possessed favorable antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and potentially anti-aging effects in vivo.

IntroductionSeveral studies have evaluated the effects of tributyrin on sow reproductive performance; however, none of these studies have investigated the effects of tributyrin on sow gut microbiota and its potential interactions with immune systems and milk composition. Therefore, we speculated that tributyrin, the combination of butyrate and mono-butyrin without odor, would reach the hindgut and affect the intestinal microbiota composition and play a better role in regulating sow reproductive performance, gut flora, and health.MethodsThirty sows (Landrace × Yorkshire) were randomly divided into two groups: the control group (CON) and the tributyrin group (TB), which received basal diet supplemented with 0.05% tributyrin. The experimental period lasted for 35 days from late pregnancy to lactation.ResultsThe results showed that TB supplementation significantly shortened the total parturition time and reduced the diarrhea rate in suckling piglets. On day 20 of lactation, the milk fat and protein levels increased by 9 and 4%, respectively. TB supplementation significantly improved the digestibility of dry material, gross energy, and crude fat in the sow diet, but had no significant effect on crude protein digestibility. Furthermore, TB supplementation increased the levels of IL-10, IL-6, and IgA in the blood of weaned piglets, but had no effect on maternal immunity. Analysis of the fecal microbial composition revealed that the addition of TB during late gestation and lactation increased the microbiota diversity in sows and piglets. At the phylum level, sows in the TB group had a slight increase in the relative abundance of Bacteroidota and Spirochaetota and a decrease in Firmicutes. At the order level, the relative abundance of Lactobacillales was increased in piglets and sows, and the TB group showed increased relative abundance of Enterobacterales and significantly decreased relative abundance of Oscillospirales in piglets. At family level, the relative abundance of Lactobacillaceae, Oscillospiraceae, and Christensenellaceae increased in sows, and the relative abundance of Enterobacteriaceae and Lactobacillaceae increased in piglets. At genus level, the relative abundance of Lactobacillus increased in sows and piglets, but the relative abundance of Subdoligranulum and Eubacterium_fissicatena_group decreased in piglets in the TB group.DiscussionIn conclusion, tributyrin supplementation shortened the farrowing duration and reduced the diarrhea rate of piglets by improving the inflammatory response and composition of gut microbiota in piglets and sows.

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a widespread and harmful disease, and is closely linked to acute endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Previous reports have shown that acute ER stress can suppress hepatic gluconeogenesis and even leads to hypoglycemia. However, the mechanism is still unclear. MAPK phosphatase 3 (MKP-3) is a positive regulator for gluconeogenesis. Thus, this study was conducted to investigate the role of MKP-3 in the suppression of gluconeogenesis by acute ER stress, as well as the regulatory role of acute ER stress on the expression of MKP-3. Results showed that acute ER stress induced by tunicamycin significantly suppressed gluconeogenesis in both hepatocytes and mouse liver, reduced glucose production level in hepatocytes, and decreased fasting blood glucose level in mice. Additionally, the protein level of MKP-3 was reduced by acute ER stress in both hepatocytes and mouse liver. Mkp-3 deficiency eliminated the inhibitory effect of acute ER stress on gluconeogenesis in hepatocytes. Moreover, the reduction effect of acute ER stress on blood glucose level and hepatic glucose 6-phosphatase (G6pc) expression was not observed in the liver-specific Mkp-3 knockout mice. Furthermore, activation of protein kinase R-like ER kinase (PERK) decreased the MKP-3 protein level, while inactivation of PERK abolished the reduction effect of acute ER stress on the MKP-3 protein level in hepatocytes. Taken together, our study suggested that acute ER stress could suppress hepatic gluconeogenesis by stimulating MKP-3 degradation via PERK, at least partially. Thus, MKP-3 might be a therapeutic target for DILI-related hypoglycemia.

Appropriate protein sources are vital for the growth, development and health of neonates. Twenty–four 2–day–old piglets were randomly divided into three groups and fed isoenergetic and isonitrogenous diets. The experimental diets included a milk replacer with 17.70% whey protein concentrate (WPC group), a milk replacer with 6% spray–dried porcine plasma isonitrogenously substituting WPC (SDPP group), and a milk replacer with 5.13% soy protein isolate isonitrogenously substituting WPC (SPI group). Neonatal piglets were fed milk replacer from postnatal day 2 (PND 2) to day 20 (PND 20). The growth performance, intestinal morphology, activities of digestive enzymes, plasma biochemical parameters, immunity–related genes, short–chain fatty acids (SCFA) and intestinal microbiota in the colonic chyme were determined. The results showed that SDPP–fed piglets had higher final BW (p = 0.05), ADG (p = 0.05) and F/G (p = 0.07) compared with WPC– and SPI–fed piglets, and SDPP–fed piglets had a lower diarrhea index (p < 0.01) from PND 2 to PND 8. SDPP–fed piglets had an increased ileal villus height (p = 0.04) and ratio of villus height to crypt depth (VCR) (p = 0.02), and increased activities of sucrase (p < 0.01), lactase (p = 0.02) and trypsin (p = 0.08) in the jejunum, compared with WPC– and SPI–fed piglets. Furthermore, SPI–fed piglets had an increased mRNA expression of IL-6 (p < 0.01) and concentration of plasma urea (p = 0.08). The results from LEfSe analysis showed that SDPP–fed piglets had a higher abundance of beneficial Butyricicoccus compared with WPC– and SPI–fed piglets, in which higher abundances of pathogenic bacteria such as Marinifilaceae, Fusobacterium and Enterococcus were observed. Moreover, SDPP–fed piglets had an increased concentration of butyric acid (p = 0.08) in the colonic chyme compared with WPC– and SPI–fed piglets. These results suggest that neonatal piglets fed milk replacer with SDPP partially substituting WPC had improved growth performance and intestinal morphology and function, associated with higher digestive enzyme activity and fewer pathogenic bacteria.

Background: Managing patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and comorbid heart failure (HF) with reduced (HFrEF) or mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF) is of clinical importance but a great challenge. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical benefit of the combined radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) and left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) procedure in AF patients complicated with systolic HF. Methods: AF patients with HFrEF or HFmrEF who underwent the combined RFCA and LAAC procedure were prospectively enrolled in the LAACablation registry. The procedural complications and long-term outcomes were evaluated. Another cohort of AF patients with systolic HF who did not undergo either RFCA or LAAC were used for prognosis comparison. Results: Among 802 AF patients who underwent the combined procedure, 65 patients were comorbid with systolic HF (25 with HFrEF and 40 with HFmrEF). The overall procedural complication rate was 9.2%, which was mainly attributed to acute decompensated HF (6.2%). Accompanied with markedly reduced AF burden (from median [25th, 75th percentile]: 100 [100, 100] to 0 [0, 1.2]%, p < 0.001), upward trajectories of cardiac function were observed in 51 (78.4%) patients, showing improvement in New York Heart Classification (p < 0.01), natriuretic peptide levels (from 1492 [809, 3259] to 413 [163, 880] pg/mL, p < 0.001) and left ventricular EF (from 42.6 ± 5.3 to 53.8 ± 8.2%, p < 0.001). During the 27-month follow-up period, death, thromboembolism, major bleeding, and HF rehospitalization were observed in three, one, one, and four patients, respectively. The observed event rates showed a significant reduction compared with the non-procedure AF-HF cohort (n = 138; for composite endpoint: hazard ratio: 2.509, 95% confidence interval: 1.415–4.449, p = 0.002) and with the respective rates predicted by risk scores. Conclusions: Combining RFCA and LAAC achieves acceptable safety and credible long-term efficacy in AF patients with systolic HF. Further randomized studies are warranted in a larger patient cohort.

Abstract Mandibular defects caused by injuries, tumors, and infections are common and can severely affect mandibular function and the patient’s appearance. However, mandible reconstruction with a mandibular bionic structure remains challenging. Inspired by the process of intramembranous ossification in mandibular development, a hierarchical vascularized engineered bone consisting of angiogenesis and osteogenesis modules has been produced. Moreover, the hierarchical vascular network and bone structure generated by these hierarchical vascularized engineered bone modules match the particular anatomical structure of the mandible. The ultra-tough polyion complex has been used as the basic scaffold for hierarchical vascularized engineered bone for ensuring better reconstruction of mandible function. According to the results of in vivo experiments, the bone regenerated using hierarchical vascularized engineered bone is similar to the natural mandibular bone in terms of morphology and genomics. The sonic hedgehog signaling pathway is specifically activated in hierarchical vascularized engineered bone, indicating that the new bone in hierarchical vascularized engineered bone underwent a process of intramembranous ossification identical to that of mandible development. Thus, hierarchical vascularized engineered bone has a high potential for clinical application in mandibular defect reconstruction. Moreover, the concept based on developmental processes and bionic structures provides an effective strategy for tissue regeneration.

Abstract Background Osteoarthritis (OA) is a major cause of pain and disability worldwide. Despite the relatively high burden of the disease, the currently available non-surgical treatment options are directed towards symptomatic relief. Therefore, we propose the use of alendronate as a disease modifying agent to help slow and prevent OA. In addition, this study will utilize Whole-Organ Magnetic Resonance Imaging Score (WORMS) to evaluate the structural integrity of cartilage in the study population. High-quality evidence, limited to a few well-conducted randomized trials, highlights contradictory results on the effect of bisphosphonates on knee function and progression of OA. Therefore, a placebo-controlled, randomized trial is needed to evaluate the combined effect of alendronate and vit D on the structure of cartilage utilizing the WORMS score and its ability to treat knee pain in OA patients. Methods This multicenter, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study will evaluate the efficacy and safety of alendronate in early OA. Patients will undergo a 1:1 double-blinded randomization to receive a one-year course of either alendronate sodium vitamin D3 or placebo. The primary outcome is to compare WORMS score of knee joint at 6 and 12 months between both groups. Secondary endpoints will include WORMS score at 24 months, knee pain, radiographic progression of OA, severity of OA, quality of life, and serum inflammatory biomarkers at different assessment timepoints. To detect a 2.2% difference in cartilage loss between both groups with power of 80%, a sample size of 60 (30 per group) is proposed. Discussion This trial will give helpful and high-quality evidence regarding the potential therapeutic role of alendronate sodium vitamin D3, as compared to placebo, in the management of patients with knee OA regarding its role on cartilage loss, radiographic progression of OA, severity of OA, knee pain, quality of life, and inflammatory biomarkers. If proven effective, this intervention would be a great option for providing beneficial outcomes with a reduced cost in this patient population. This experiment evaluated the impacts of essential oils (EO) and protease (PRO), independently or in combination, on growth performance, antioxidation, inflammation and intestinal function of weaned pigs. One hundred and sixty weaned pigs (21 d of age, BW of 6.74 ± 0.20 kg) were randomly divided into 4 treatments with 8 replicate pens of 5 pigs per pen. Dietary treatments included the following: 1) control diet (CON), 2) CON with 300 mg/kg essential oils (EO), 3) CON with 500 mg/kg protease (PRO), 4) CON with 300 mg/kg essential oil and 500 mg/kg protease (EO + PRO). On d 8, one pig from each pen was selected for sampling. The remaining pigs were fed for an additional week and growth performance was monitored during this period. Extracting yield of polysaccharides as the index, the extraction conditions were optimized by Box-Bohnken method based on the results of single-factor experiments. The antioxidant activities were evaluated by the determination of hydroxyl radical (·OH), 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH·) , and inhibition effect on auto-oxidation of grease. Experimental results showed that, the optimal extraction conditions were obtained as follows: liquid-material ratio 69:1 mL/g, temperature 52 ℃, ultrasonic time 21 min, ultrasonic power 180 W. Abstract Backgrounds Mismatch between knee surface and prosthesis components is related to postoperative complications. Morphological differences between ethnicity and gender may affect prosthesis coverage. The purpose of this study is to describe morphological characters of resected knee surface (distal femur, proximal tibia) in the Chinese population, analyze the influence of gender and other demographical factors, and validate the effect of ethnic difference by calculating the coverage of Western-designed knee prostheses on Chinese knee surface. Methods Intraoperative anthropometries were performed during total knee arthroplasty performed by one single team. After screening out severe deformities and bone defects, data were separated via prosthesis system. Multiple linear regression and partial correlation analysis of morphological parameters on age, gender, height, weight were used to find out independent factors influencing morphology. Based on the 5 mm-tolerance in the prosthesis, simulation on scatter plots was brought out to calculate the prosthesis coverage to the resected bone surface. Results A total of 865 cases of total knee arthroplasty were involved in this study. Three different herbivore grazing assemblages, namely, yak grazing (YG), Tibetan sheep grazing (SG) and yak and Tibetan sheep co-grazing (MG), are practiced in alpine meadows on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP), but the effects of the different herbivore assemblages on soil microbes are relatively unknown. The microbial community plays an important role in the functional stability of alpine grassland ecosystems. Therefore, it is important to understand how the microbial community structure of grassland ecosystems changes under different herbivore grazing assemblages to ensure their sustainable development. To fill this gap, a field study was carried out to investigate the effects of YG, SG, and MG on plant communities, soil physico-chemical properties and microbial communities under moderate grazing intensity in alpine meadows. Grazing increased the β-diversity of the bacteria community and decreased the β-diversity of the fungal community. The herbivore assemblage affected the microbial community diversity, but not the plant community diversity. Total phosphorus, soil bulk density, root biomass, and plant α-diversity were correlated with both the bacterial and fungal community composition, available phosphorus and soil moisture were correlated only with the bacterial community composition, while available potassium and above-ground net primary production (ANPP) were correlated only with the fungal community composition. Soil available nitrogen, soil available phosphorus and soil bulk density were highest in SG, while ANPP was highest in MG. It was concluded that MG can improve ANPP and stabilize the soil microbial community, suggesting that MG is an effective method for sustainable use and conservation of alpine meadows on the QTP.

Dictyophora indusiata (Vent. Ex Pers.) Fisch. (DI) is an edible and medicinal fungus widely used in East Asian countries. However, during DI cultivation, the formation of fruiting bodies cannot be regulated, which leads to yield and quality losses. The present study performed a combined genome, transcriptome, and metabolome analysis of DI. Using Nanopore and Illumina sequencing approaches, we created the DI reference genome, which was 67.32 Mb long with 323 contigs. We identified 19,909 coding genes on this genome, of which 46 gene clusters were related to terpenoid synthesis. Subsequent transcriptome sequencing using five DI tissues (cap, indusia, mycelia, stipe, and volva) showed high expression levels of genes in the cap, indicating the tissue’s importance in regulating the fruiting body formation. Meanwhile, the metabolome analysis identified 728 metabolites from the five tissues. Mycelium was rich in choline, while volva was rich in dendronobilin; stipe had monosaccharides as the primary component, and the cap was the main source of indole acetic acid (IAA) synthesis. We confirmed the importance of tryptophan metabolism for DI fruiting body differentiation based on KEGG pathway analysis. Finally, the combined multiomics analysis identified three new genes related to IAA synthesis of the tryptophan metabolic pathway in the cap, which may regulate DI fruiting body synthesis and improve DI quality. Thus, the study’s findings expand our understanding of resource development and the molecular mechanisms underlying DI development and differentiation. However, the current genome is still a rough draft that needs to be strengthened.

Juxtapleural nodules were excluded from the segmented lung region in the Hounsfield unit threshold-based segmentation method. To re-include those regions in the lung region, a new approach was presented using scale-invariant feature transform and gradient vector flow models in this study. First, the scale-invariant feature transform method was utilized to detect all scale-invariant points in the binary lung region. The boundary points in the neighborhood of a scale-invariant point were collected to form the supportive boundary lines. Then, we utilized a Fourier descriptor to obtain a character representation of each supportive boundary line. Spectrum energy recognizes supportive boundaries that must be corrected. Third, the gradient vector flow-snake method was presented to correct the recognized supportive borders with a smooth profile curve, giving an ideal correction edge in those regions. Finally, the performance of the proposed method was evaluated through experiments on multiple authentic computed tomography images. The perfect results and robustness proved that the proposed method could correct the juxtapleural region precisely.

Abstract Grain boundary (GB) migration is one of the most important phenomena in materials science, which plays a key role in modifying the microstructures and properties of polycrystalline ceramic materials. Understanding how GB migrates is thus a fundamental and critical issue for future ceramic material design. While the understanding of GB atomic structures has evolved significantly over the past several decades due to the progress of atomic‐resolution electron microscopy and atomistic simulation, the understanding of the atomistic grain boundary migration is still lacking. The present article briefly reviews our recent progress on the direct observation of atomistic GB migration in ceramic material by atomic‐resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Using Al2O3 as a model material, we found that the atomistic GB migration proceeds with atom shuffling accompanied by GB structural change and/or nucleation of disconnection, which is highly dependent on the GB atomic structures.

Habitat suitability assessment is the basis for wildlife conservation management and habitat restoration. It is a useful tool to understand the quality of wildlife habitat and its potential spatial distribution. In order to reveal the habitat suitability and connectivity of sambar (Rusa unicolor) to promote species and biodiversity conservation, this study collected records of sambar (Rusa unicolor) from over 2,000 camera traps in the forests of Southwest China in the past 5 years to assess the overall situation of their habitat. The results of the species distribution model revealed that the suitable habitat area for sambar in the five major mountain ranges (Minshan, Qionglai, Daxiangling, Xiaoxiangling, and Liangshan) in Southwest China is 18,231 km2, accounting for 17.02% of the total area. The most suitable habitat of sambar is primarily distributed in Qionglai, as well as the intersection areas of Daxiangling, Xiaoxiangling, and Minshan. The temperature annual range, temperature seasonality, elevation, and distance to road were important factors affecting the distribution of suitable habitat for sambar. Analysis of landscape pattern shows that there were 273 habitat patches, with a maximum patch area of 9,983 km2, accounting for 54.8% of the total suitable habitat area. However, the segmentation index and separation index of each habitat patch were 0.99 and 106.58, respectively, indicating a relatively high habitat fragmentation in the study area. The results of habitat connectivity analysis showed that the Qionglai mountains have the largest suitable habitat area and the highest connectivity among habitat patches. However, habitat connectivity between the five mountains is very low, suggesting that gene flow among these mountain ranges is probably limited. We therefore recommend strengthening protection of sambar and their habitat, with special attention to the establishment of corridors between the different mountain populations.

Abstract Background Stroke is the major cause of adult neurocognitive disorders (NCDs), and presents a significant burden on both of the families and society. To improve the cerebral injury, we generated a blood–brain barrier penetrating peptide TAT‐LBD‐Ngn2, in which Ngn2 (Neurogenin2) is a classical preneural gene that enhances neurogenesis, and neural precursor cells survival and differentiation. We previously demonstrated that it has a short‐term protective effect against cerebral ischemia‐reperfusion injury. However, it is uncertain if TAT‐LBD‐Ngn2 could promote neurogenesis to exhibit long‐term therapeutic impact. Methods and results In present study, TAT‐LBD‐Ngn2 was administered for 14 or 28 days following bilateral common carotid arteries occlusion (BCCAO). After confirming that TAT‐LBD‐Ngn2 could cross the brain blood barrier and aggregate in the hippocampus, we conducted open field test, Morris water maze and contextual fear conditioning to examine the long‐term effect of TAT‐LBD‐Ngn2 on cognition. We discovered that TAT‐LBD‐Ngn2 significantly improved the spatial and contextual learning and memory on both days 14 and 28 after BCCAO, while TAT‐LBD‐Ngn2 exhibited anxiolytic effect only on day 14, but had no effect on locomotion. Using western blot and immunofluorescence, TAT‐LBD‐Ngn2 was also shown to promote neurogenesis, as evidenced by increased BrdU+ and DCX+ neurons in dentate gyrus. Meanwhile, TAT‐LBD‐Ngn2 elevated the expression of brain derived neurotrophic factor rather than nerve growth factor compared to the control group. Conclusions Our findings revealed that TAT‐LBD‐Ngn2 could dramatically promote learning and memory in long term by facilitating neurogenesis in the hippocampus after global cerebral ischemia, indicating that TAT‐LBD‐Ngn2 may be an appealing candidate for treating poststroke NCD.

BackgroundThe house-tree-person (HTP) drawing test has received growing attention from researchers as a common projective test. However, the methods used to select and interpret drawing indicators still lack uniformity.ObjectiveThis study aims to integrate drawing indicators into the process of screening for or classifying mental disorders by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of the application of the HTP test.MethodsA search of the following electronic databases was performed in May 2022: PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, EBSCO, CNKI, VIP, and Wanfang. Screening and checking of the literature were performed independently by two researchers. The empirical studies published on the use of the HTP test in mental disorders and studies providing specific data on the occurrence frequency of drawing characteristics were analyzed. A total of 30 studies were included in the meta-analysis, including 665 independent effect sizes and 6,295 participants. The strength of the association between drawing characteristics of the HTP test and the prevalence of mental disorders was measured by the ratio (OR) with a 95% CI. Publication bias was assessed using a funnel plot, Rosenthal’s fail-safe number (Nfs), and the trim and fill method.ResultsThe results revealed 50 drawing characteristics that appeared at least three times in previous studies, of which 39 were able to significantly predict mental disorders. The HTP test can be divided into the following four dimensions: house, tree, person, and the whole. These dimensions reflect the structure, size, and other characteristics of the picture. The results showed that the greatest predictor of mental disorders was the whole (OR = 4.20, p < 0.001), followed by the house (OR = 3.95, p < 0.001), the tree (OR = 2.70, p < 0.001), and the person (OR = 2.16, p < 0.001). The valid predictors can be categorized into the following four types: item absence, bizarre or twisted, excessive details, and small or simplified. The subgroup analysis showed that the affective-specific indicators included no motion, leaning house, and decorated roof; thought-specific indicators included excessive separation among items, no window, loss of facial features, and inappropriate body proportions; and common indicators of mental disorders included no additional decoration, simplified drawing, very small house, two-dimensional house, and very small tree.ConclusionThese findings can promote the standardization of the HTP test and provide a theoretical reference for the screening and clinical diagnosis of mental disorders.
