Little is known about the ecology of insect species in the hyporheic zone of rivers, despite its importance in understanding how species survive in specialized habitats. We report on the life history and trophic characteristics of the hyporheic stonefly species Alloperla ishikariana Kohno, 1953 (Order: Plecoptera, Family: Chloroperlidae) in a gravel-bed river in northern Japan, using year-round sampling of both benthic and hyporheic larvae, as well as flying adults in the riparian zone. Adults emerged between May and August, and the larval cohort structure consisted of three sized groups with some sex dimorphism in their body size, with an average growth rate of 0.0043 mg/day. Diet analyses based on C and N stable isotope ratios indicated minimal ontogenetic diet shifts. In contrast, the temporal diet shift was more apparent with higher dependence on Oligochaeta in winter, with an increasing dependence on Chironomidae in spring and early summer. Other insect taxa, namely, Leuctridae and small-sized Lepidostoma, demonstrated a high to moderate affinity for the hyporheic zone. Alloperla ishikariana spent most of its larval stage in the hyporheic zone. With adults living from 7 to 10 days, A. ishikariana completes a life span of approximately 3 years with its larval stage in the dark. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Animals affect element cycling in ecosystems by consumption and excretion. Amphidromous shrimps frequently dominate low-mid altitude streams, where downstream connectivity to oceans is sustained. Although shrimps' direct influence on benthic communities has been studied, little is known about their influences on nutrient cycling. Here, we hypothesized that the dominance of shrimps alters nutrient mineralization by benthic macroinvertebrates in streams due to the difference in the quality and quantity of excretion between shrimps and aquatic insects. We tested this hypothesis through a field manipulative experiment, excretion measurements of animals, and field surveys. In the field manipulative experiment, the presence of shrimps slightly decreased the biomass of aquatic insects but tripled total benthic macroinvertebrate biomass directly through their own biomass. The mass-specific NH 4 + excretion rate by shrimps was similar to aquatic insects, and the areal NH 4 + excretion by benthic macroinvertebrates was increased by 2.5 times in the presence of shrimps. In contrast, shrimps excreted significantly less soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) than aquatic insects, and the presence of shrimps did not affect areal SRP excretion by benthic macroinvertebrates. The field survey showed a positive correlation of NO 3 - concentration with the shrimp density, inferring the excess NH 4 + was nitrified. Although the nutrient concentration of stream water is frequently attributed to watershed conditions, the results of this study indicate that downstream connectivity to oceans may also influence nutrient dynamics of the stream through the density of amphidromous shrimps., (© 2022. Mammals exhibit several types of diel activity pattern, including nocturnal, diurnal, crepuscular, and cathemeral. These patterns vary inter- and intra-specifically and are affected by environmental factors, individual status, and interactions with other individuals or species. Determining the factors that shape diel activity patterns is challenging but essential for understanding the behavioral ecology of animal species, and for wildlife conservation and management. Using camera-trap surveys, we investigated the species distributions and activity patterns of terrestrial mammals on the Shiretoko Peninsula, Hokkaido, Japan, with particular focus on brown bears and sika deer. From June to October 2019, a total of 7,530 observations were recorded by 65 camera-traps for eight species, including two alien species. The diel activity pattern of brown bears was diurnal/crepuscular, similar to that of bears in North America, but different from European populations. Bear observations were more frequent during the autumnal hyperphagia period, and adult females and sub-adults were more diurnal than adult males. In addition, bears inside the protected area were more diurnal than those outside it. These findings suggest that appetite motivation, competitive interactions between conspecifics, and human activities potentially affect bear activity patterns. Similar to other sika deer populations and other deer species, the diel activity patterns of sika deer were crepuscular. Deer showed less variation in activity patterns among months and sex-age classes, while adult males were observed more frequently during the autumn copulation period, suggesting that reproductive motivation affects their activity patterns.

Background and Objective: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) such as programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) and cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen 4 (CTLA-4) inhibitors have greatly improved cancer treatment. However, they are associated with immune-related adverse events, including autoimmune diseases (ADs) owing to their immune enhancement effect. As there are few comprehensive studies of ADs by ICIs, it is necessary to analyze the period information of drug-induced ADs. We also assumed that the temporal information may be useful to estimate the similarity of the pathogenic mechanism between spontaneous and ICI-induced ADs., Methods: A period analysis including the Weibull analysis was performed on ICI-induced ADs using the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report (JADER) database. For evaluating the similarity of spontaneous and ICI-induced ADs, a hierarchical cluster analysis was conducted to compare the different onset-time ranges., Results: Type 1 diabetes mellitus, autoimmune colitis, and pemphigoid occurred earlier with CTLA-4 inhibitors (median: 46, 29.5 and 28 days, respectively) than with PD-1 inhibitors (> 130 days). Myasthenia gravis had a median time to onset of approximately 1 month, and the risk of onset would increase over time in ipilimumab combination therapy. This result reveals ADs that require attention. Using cluster analysis, we estimated six clusters with different patterns of onset times. Based on these results and a detailed previous research survey, the possible pathogenesis of drug-induced ADs was also discussed., Conclusions: This paper describes risk profiles with temporal information of ICI-induced ADs and proposes certain indicators for deciphering the mechanism of AD onset.

Introduction. An on-going coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a challenge all over the world. Since an endoscopy unit and its staff are at potentially high risk for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, we conducted a survey for the management of the gastrointestinal endoscopic practice, personal protective equipment (PPE), and risk assessment for COVID-19 during the pandemic at multiple facilities. Methods. The 11-item survey questionnaire was sent to representative respondent of Department of Gastroenterology, Osaka City University Hospital, and its 19 related facilities. Results. A total of 18 facilities submitted valid responses and a total of 373 health care professionals (HCPs) participated. All facilities (18/18: 100%) were screening patients at risk for SARS-CoV-2 infection before endoscopy. During the pandemic, we found that the total volume of endoscopic procedures decreased by 44%. Eleven facilities (11/18: 61%) followed recommendations of the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society (JGES); consequently, about 35%-50% of esophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy were canceled. Mask (surgical mask or N95 mask), face shield/goggle, gloves (one or two sets), and gown (with long or short sleeves) were being used by endoscopists, nurses, endoscopy technicians, and endoscope cleaning staff in all the facilities (18/18: 100%). SARS-CoV-2 infection risk assessment of HCPs was conducted daily in all the facilities (18/18: 100%), resulting in no subsequent SARS-CoV-2 infection in HCPs. Conclusion. COVID-19 has had a dramatic impact on the gastrointestinal endoscopic practice. Background: The prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in Crohn's disease (CD) patients was investigated to determine whether the presence and severity of gastroduodenal lesions were related to H. pylori infection.Methods: Infection rates were compared between CD group (n = 90) and the control group (n = 525). Correlations between endoscopically detected lesions and H. pylori positive rates were investigated. The relationship between drug therapy and the prevalence of H. pylori infection was also analyzed.Results: H. pylori-positive rate of the 90 CD patients attending our clinic was 16.7%, significantly lower than the rate in healthy controls (40.2%) (P = 0.0001). The involvement of H. pylori infection in the gastroduodenal lesions of CD patients was also examined. The prevalence of gastroduodenal lesions in all CD patients was high, 92.2%. The lesions observed included ulcers, erosion, and "bamboo joint-like lesions" of the stomach, and ulcers, erosion, stenosis, and elevated lesions of the duodenum. None of these lesions were found to be related to H. pylori infection. However, H. pylori infection was found to exacerbate gastric ulcers (P = 0.036). The analysis of a possible relationship between a history of drug therapy and the low prevalence of H. pylori infection in CD patients showed that the prevalence of H. pylori infection was significantly lower in patients who had received antibiotics for 2 weeks or more (P = 0.002).Conclusions: The results suggest that H. pylori infection is essentially unrelated to the gastroduodenal lesions observed in CD. It seems likely, however, that H. pylori infection may exacerbate gastric ulcers and that H. pylori can be eradicated by prolonged use of antibiotics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The reproductive characteristics of understory bamboo and the effects of dieback on overstory tree seedlings through temporal changes in the environment at the forest floor have only been examined in a few bamboo species, due to the unpredictable occurrence of flowering events and long intervals between them but provide valuable information on tree regeneration and succession in a forest with dense dwarf bamboo cover. We investigated environmental conditions and assessed seedlings (< 30-cm tall) of the dwarf bamboo Sasa borealis and overstory tree species at 44-50 measurement points during 2016-2021, which included a S. borealis mass flowering event in 2017. We also conducted seed germination tests to determine germination rates and patterns in S. borealis. Environmental factors affecting seedling recruitment of S. borealis and of overstory trees were analysed using spatiotemporal generalized linear mixed models in the Bayesian framework. We observed gradual temporal changes in the environment, including increasing canopy openness and decreasing maximum height of dead S. borealis culms. The seeds germinated slowly and the emergence of current-year S. borealis seedlings peaked in spring-summer in 2019. The tree seedling density after 2019 increased significantly compared to that before the dieback. The model results suggest that tree seedling establishment was enhanced by increased light availability. Continuous field observation beginning before S. borealis dieback revealed gradually enhanced tree recruitment in response to slow decay of the remaining dead culms and slow recovery of S. borealis. Objective: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is diagnosed by the presence of dysphagia and intraepithelial eosinophilic infiltration of ≥15 per high-power field (HPF). EoE should be distinguished from proton pump inhibitor-responsive esophageal eosinophilic infiltration (PPI-R EEI) in patients that are responsive to PPI treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of EoE and PPI-R EEI in Japanese patients in a multicenter study., Methods: Ten hospitals participated in this study. Esophageal biopsy was performed when the patients had typical EoE symptoms or when endoscopic findings revealed a typical EoE appearance. EEI was defined as the intraepithelial eosinophilic infiltration of ≥15 per HPF. Patients with EEI received rabeprazole for 8 weeks to distinguish EoE from PPI-R EEI., Results: A total of 13,634 subjects that underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy because of further examination or as a routine checkup were enrolled. Seventy-one (0.5%) patients suspected with EoE were examined by biopsy. A histological examination of 7 (9.9%) cases revealed EEI. Two of these 7 patients showed no symptoms and the other 5 were treated with PPI. Two (0.01%) patients were diagnosed with EoE and 3 (0.02%) with PPI-R EEI., Conclusion: EoE and PPI-R EEI were rare in Japanese patients that underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Genetic polymorphisms have recently been found to be related to clinical outcome in septic patients. The present study investigated to evaluate the influence of genetic polymorphisms in Japanese septic patients on clinical outcome and whether use of genetic polymorphisms as predictors would enable more accurate prediction of outcome. Effects of 16 genetic polymorphisms related to pro-inflammatory mediators and conventional demographic/clinical parameters (age, sex, past medical history, and APACHE II score) on ICU mortality as well as disease severity during ICU stay were examined in the septic patients (n=123) admitted to the ICU between October 2001 and November 2007 by multivariable logistic regression analysis. ICU mortality was significantly associated with TNF -308GA, IL1β -31CT/TT, and APACHE II score. Receiver-operating characteristics (ROC) analysis demonstrated that, compared with APACHE II score alone (ROC-AUC=0.68), use of APACHE II score and two genetic parameters (TNF -308 and IL1β -31) enabled more accurate prediction of ICU mortality (ROC-AUC=0.80). Significant association of two genetic polymorphisms, TNF -308 and IL1β -31, with ICU mortality was observed in septic patients. Background: Road traffic injuries among the elderly have recently become a public health issue; therefore, we investigated the clinical characteristics of such injuries among the elderly in Japan., Methods: A retrospective study was performed using data from a medium-sized hospital emergency department. Data were extracted from medical records for one year, and patients were categorized into groups ages 18-64, 65-74 and 75+. Variables included demographic characteristics, injury circumstances, and nature of injury. Univariate and bivariate descriptive statistical analyses were performed, and multivariate logistic regression was used to evaluate injury severity and hospital admission by age groups., Results: A total of 1,656 patients were studied. Patients aged 65+ had more chest wall injury, intracranial injury, lower extremity fracture, and intrathoracic injury than patients aged 18-64., Conclusions: Injury circumstances and nature of injuries associated with traffic incidents showed different patterns by age groups, particularly among the elderly.

Aim: Although anemia is common among the elderly, available data for anemia among them are limited in Japan. The aim of the present study was to compare the prevalence of anemia among elderly groups, and evaluate factors attributable to anemia., Methods: We enrolled 284 elderly residents in 2 long-term health care facilities, and 1,019 people aged 65 and over who visited outpatient clinics for medical checkups in 1 hospital all located in urban areas in Hiroshima. Hematological data from the 2004 National Nutrition Survey in Japan were cited for comparison., Results: Based on the WHO criteria for anemia, more than half of the residents in both health care facilities were anemic, regardless of gender. However, the prevalence of anemia among elderly people visiting outpatient clinics at hospital was only about 6% for both genders. Analysis of underlying diseases among residents of the health care facility did not reveal any association between a particular disease and anemia. Total serum protein values were significantly lower in the elderly in health care facilities than in those of the elderly of the outpatient clinics, and they showed weak statistical correlations with anemic state in the former group. Finally, the elderly in outpatient clinics showed significantly lower prevalence of anemia compared to the elderly in the National Nutrition Survey in Japan, partly due to selection bias., Conclusions: The prevalence of anemia in the elderly covered a broad spectrum depending on the group examined. Anemia in the elderly was an indicator of comorbidity.

Background and Aim: No reports on the relative risk of development of colorectal cancer (CRC) in Japanese patients with Crohn's disease (CD) have been published. The present study aimed to investigate the relative risk and the clinical features of CRC complicating CD among patients managed at Fukuoka University Chikushi Hospital, Fukuoka, Japan (a tertiary referral center for inflammatory bowel diseases)., Methods: The clinical backgrounds were analyzed of 512 patients with CD who have been treated by our department during the last 20-year period (1985-2005) (total 6212.6 person years at risk). The standardized incidence ratio (SIR) refers to the relative risk of CRC in the subjects as compared with that in a sex- and age-matched healthy population., Results: There were six cases with CRC. The SIR was significantly higher (3.2-fold higher; 95% confidence interval, 1.2-6.9 P < 0.05) in the CD group than in the healthy population. The significant risk factors identified were female sex, mixed small and large bowel type, observation period over 20 years, onset of CD at less than 25 years of age, presence of anal disease, and positive history of surgery. The prognosis for the six cases with CRC was very poor (five cases died within 1.5 years)., Conclusion: The risk of CRC in longstanding CD in Japan was similar to that in Western countries. The necessity of surveillance in the management of CD would also need to be discussed in the near future, especially in CD patients with anal lesions or fistulae, and are particularly important in patients with a 20-year or more history of CD.

Strong adherence to antihypertensive therapy has been shown to reduce the frequency of cardiovascular events by strictly controlling blood pressure. Although calcium channel blockers (CCBs) are among the most popular antihypertensive drugs in Japan, few trials have been conducted using high CCB doses in Japanese patients. In this study, we administered amlodipine 5 mg or 10 mg to patients with hypertension in order to compare the efficacy and tolerability of low and high doses, and measured two surrogate markers of hypertensive target organ damage, i.e., brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) as a risk marker of cardiac overload and microalbuminuria as a measure of renal damage. Seventy-two patients were randomly assigned to either amlodipine 5 mg (n = 35) or 10 mg (n = 37) dose groups. The latter group achieved greater reductions in clinic as well as both morning and evening home BP levels without an increase in pulse rate (the differences between the two groups in clinic/morning/evening systolic BP were 4.7/4.7/5.4 mmHg, and for diastolic BP they were 4.2/3.6/3.8 mmHg). Reductions in BNP and urinary albumin/creatinine ratio (UAR) levels were significantly correlated with the reductions in systolic BP levels (BNP, clinic/morning BP: r = 0.256, p = 0.030/r = 0.330, p = 0.005; UAR, clinic BP: r = 0.316, p = 0.007). In conclusion, the higher dose (10 mg) of amlodipine induced greater reductions in all BP levels than did the lower dose, without increasing the pulse rate. These additional reductions were significantly correlated with reductions in hypertensive cardiac overload, as evaluated by BNP levels, and a reduction in renal damage, as evaluated by microalbuminuria levels. Moreover, a reduction in the microalbuminuria may have occurred concomitant with a reduction in clinic systolic BP level.

How much should be done for better managements of the perioperative thromboprophylaxis? In Japan, the guideline for prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) was established for the first time in February, 2004. Our academic medical center formed a committee for prevention of thrombosis for all departments using operating rooms in October, 2002 and began to make the database of symptomatic pulmonary thromboembolism (PTE). From the end of September, 2003, we asked the surgeons to indicate the PTE risk grades when ordering surgical operations. The prevention team of VTE prepared VTE risk tables and recommended prevention methods for perioperative period. If surgeons did not choose prevention methods, the team took the consultation. Also, we made a manual how to make emergency calls and a flow chart for the diagnosis and therapy cooperating with cardiologists and anesthesiologists. We founded another meeting of Kinki Clinical Thrombosis Research Association for the study and education. We assessed the incidence of symptomatic PTE every year. The incidences of symptomatic PTE were 14 of 4101 (0.34%) in the first year, 2 of 3796 (0.053%) in the second year; 2 of 4002 cases (0.049%) in the third year under general anesthesia, respectively. Cases of fatal PTE were 2 (0.34%), 1 (0.049%) and 0 (0%), respectively. The multidisciplinary thromboprophylaxis effort that we had adopted was very important to prevent aggravation of VTE.

Objectives: To determine the incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) among intensive care unit (ICU) patients in Japan and to assess the impact of VAP on patient outcomes, including mortality, length of stay, and duration of mechanical ventilation., Design: Multicenter cohort study., Setting: Twenty-eight ICUs in multidisciplinary Japanese hospitals with more than 200 beds., Patients: A total of 21,909 patients 16 years or older who were admitted to an ICU between June 2002 and June 2004, stayed in the ICU for 24 to 1,000 hours, and were not transferred to another ICU., Results: The overall infection rates for nosocomial pneumonia and VAP were 6.5 cases per 1,000 patient-days and 12.6 cases per 1,000 ventilator-days, respectively. The standardized mortality rates for the patients with VAP was 1.3 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.1-1.6): 1.1 (95% CI, 0.9-1.4) for the cases due to drug-susceptible pathogens and 1.5 (95% CI, 1.1-1.9) for the cases due to drug-resistant pathogens. After adjusting for Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score, the mean length of stay for the patients with VAP caused by drug-susceptible pathogens (15.2 days [95% CI, 14.6-15.8]) and by drug-resistant pathogens (17.8 days [95% CI, 17.0-18.6]) was significantly longer than that in the patients without nosocomial infection (6.8 days [95% CI, 6.7-6.9]). The mean duration of mechanical ventilation in the patients with VAP caused by drug-susceptible pathogens (12.0 days [95% CI, 11.5-12.5]) and drug-resistant pathogens (14.1 days [95% CI, 13.5-14.8]) was significantly longer than that in the patients without nosocomial infection (4.7 days [95% CI, 4.6-4.8])., Conclusion: The incidence of VAP is substantial among ICU patients in Japan. The potential impact of VAP on patient outcomes emphasizes the importance of preventive measures against VAP, especially for VAP caused by drug-resistant pathogens.

Four and half years have passed since Mt. Oyama in Miyake Island erupted. Ambient sulfur dioxide (SO2) is still above the environmental air standard in parts of the island, even though emission of the volcanic gas has diminished. Reconstruction of life-support infrastructure in the island and safety measures started in July 2002, and a short-term trial stay project for former residents was completed in April 2003 for the total rehabilitation of the island. We conducted health examinations, and questionnaires on clinical symptoms among the reconstruction workers in January 2003, as well as questionnaires on respiratory symptoms among former residents who joined the trial stay, in late fall of 2003. The peak expiratory flow rate and symptoms of the workers and the symptoms of the short-term residents were not correlated to SO2 concentrations. In addition, we investigated the medical histories of outpatients at Miyake-mura National Insurance Center Clinic. We could not recognize any cases directly connected with higher ambient SO2 concentration in the area of the island, but there was a male worker, in his thirties, who suffered an initial attack of bronchial asthma, which required intensive care and treatment. As a general rule, all the workers and the residents are asked to wear gas masks for SO2 when its concentration is above 2.0 ppm and to stay in the house with desulfuration facilities as a precautionary measure at night. The residents are now well informed about the risks of volcanic gas and preventive measures for adverse health effects. We could not evaluate correlations between SO2 exposure indices and health effects sufficiently due to the limitation of the field study, but this study presents useful pieces of information as a risk communication for reconstruction workers and former inhabitants to the island.

Domestic violence (DV) implies violence against women by intimate male partners. DV is a serious health issue for women, as well as a violation of human rights. It is a challenge to develop effective public health interventions, as they have to take into account complicated social and psychological background factors. In this paper we present an overview of various interventions in Japan and elsewhere in the world up to now, and propose a strategy for developing effective public health interventions. Governments and NGOs have been involved in various interventions to eliminate DV, e.g., establishing legal frameworks, providing emergency shelters for abused women, and educating male abusers. Health sector interventions include: systematic DV education to health professionals in Europe and the United States; and development of DV victim support networks, in which health facilities play core roles, in Asia and Latin America. The major expected roles of health professionals are identification and treatment of abused women, and prevention of recurrent violence. However, achievement of those goals is insufficient, because of the lack of systematic education, different views on DV between health professionals and abused women, misunderstanding of background factors, and lack of coordination between relevant agencies. The health sector, including clinical and public health services, is expected to play important roles in identifying and supporting abused women in Japan. A possible strategy is to integrate DV interventions into existing maternal and child health service systems. All the front-line health professionals should be provided with systematic training and practical manuals to treat abused women. Further research and evaluation of past interventions are needed to develop effective interventions.

Purpose: There are no reports based on long-term observation on mortality caused by Crohn's disease in Japan because of the small number of patients recorded throughout the 1970s. Because Crohn's disease patients in Japan are exempt from medical expenses, Crohn's disease is treated mainly with nutritional therapy and less frequently with corticosteroids. This study sought to estimate mortality and cause of death by Crohn's disease in Japan in the referred population., Methods: Consecutive patients with Crohn's disease from 1967 to 1997 were identified in the Kyushu and Fukuoka University Study Group's nine affiliated hospitals and were followed up for 8.4 +/- 5.6 years., Results: Death occurred in 6 of 544 patients. Cumulative survival rates for patients with Crohn's disease were 99.7 percent at 5 years, 99.3 percent at 10 years, and 96.8 percent at 15 years; there was no significant difference between genders or the age-matched expected survival rate of the Japanese population (P = 0.61, 0.84, 0.56). The overall standardized mortality rate was 1.43 (95 percent confidence interval, 0.53-3.12). The standardized mortality rate in newly diagnosed patients who were treated mainly with nutritional therapy was 0.75 (95 percent confidence interval, 0.02-4.18), and 1.69 in referred patients (95 percent confidence interval, 0.55-3.93). The standardized mortality rate by causes of death was high (64.4; 95 percent confidence interval, 7.72-232.5) in rectal cancer. In 150 patients who had been followed up for more than ten years, only 40 percent were administered corticosteroids., Conclusion: The standardized mortality rate of patients with Crohn's disease in the Kyushu and Fukuoka University Study Group's nine hospitals (the reference unit) was similar to reported rates of cohort studies. The standardized mortality rate of newly diagnosed patients was better than that of referred patients. The better vital prognosis of newly diagnosed patients might be attributable to the influence of frequent nutritional therapy and to lesser steroid use.

We derived fat indices for sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis) in eastern Hokkaido, Japan, and estimated the probability of over-winter survival with a logistic regression model using fat indices. Kidney fat mass (KFM) appears to be an adequate index of wide range of physical conditions before the onset of severe nutritional stress. When KFM values fell below 20 g, femur (FMF) and mandible cavity fat (MCF) indices declined sharply. FMF and MCF were useful indices for detecting malnourished deer. A logistic regression model describes survival thresholds in two bone fat indices for calves (45%) and three fat indices for adult females (FMF = 25%, MCF = 30%, KFM = 20 g). These models are useful for estimating the probability of winter survival in Hokkaido sika deer.

Phenotype IIC of von Willebrand disease (vWD) is a subtype of type 2A vWD characterized by recessive inheritance and an impaired multimerization of von Willebrand factor (vWF) molecules beyond dimers. The 5 patients with phenotype IIC whose vWF gene defect has been characterized so far are either homozygous or double heterozygotes for mutations localized in exons 11, 12, 14 or 15. We report here the identification of a new candidate mutation in a previously described Japanese patient affected with phenotype IIC vWD. The propositus is homozygous for the A1833G nucleotide substitution, in exon 14 of vWF gene, responsible for the N528S mutation within the vWF propeptide. This finding is in agreement with the consanguineous origin of the propositus, whose parents are first cousins. Six patients' relatives who are asymptomatic were studied and found heterozygous for the N528S mutation. The screening of the whole vWF gene, either by SSCP or sequencing, did not reveal any other deleterious sequence alteration in the patient. Furthermore, the N528S nonconservative substitution identified is located in the vWF propeptide region, where the other phenotype IIC mutations described so far are clustered. The N528S candidate mutation characterized is, therefore, most probably responsible for the multimerization defect of vWF observed in this patient.

In order to determine the sex of carcass remains of the Sika deer (Cervus nippon), we improved a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique for amplification of the Sika deer Sry, a male-specific DNA region on the mammalian Y chromosome. From the nucleotide sequence of the Sry region obtained here, PCR primers, MT1 and MT2, capable of amplifying a shorter Sry region were newly designed, and a microsatellite locus was used as a positive control. Using these primers, 96 of 109 sex-unknown fawns (88%, 96/109) were successfully sexed (46 males and 50 females) regardless of the conditions of carcasses found in the field. The results and the methodology could greatly contribute to the study of the mortality pattern of the Sika deer population.

The association of CD26/dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPPIV) and human T lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) was studied by two approaches. First, we examined the expression of CD26 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from the patients with adult T cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL), an HTLV-I-related malignancy. The expression of CD26 on the surface of PBMC was decreased in all 20 patients with ATLL compared with those from normal individuals (P < 0.01) and the expression of the CD26 gene transcript was not detectable in seven out of eight patients with ATLL. Then we compared the quantity of viral DNA in CD26-negative (CD26-) and CD26-positive (CD26+) cells obtained from 17 HTLV-I healthy carries by using a polymerase chain reaction method. The CD26-cells had a higher copy number of viral DNA than CD26+ cells. These findings indicate that HTLV-I has in vivo tropism to CD26- cells, suggesting that some phenotypes of ATLL cells reflect the in vivo cellular tropism of HTLV-I.

Background: Recent climate changes have produced extreme climate events. This study focused on extreme snowfall and intended to discuss the vulnerability of temperate mammals against it through interspecies comparisons of spatial niches in northern Japan. We constructed niche models for seven non-hibernating species through wide-scaled snow tracking on skis, whose total survey length was 1144 km. Results: We detected a low correlation (rs < 0.4) between most pairs of species niches, indicating that most species possessed different overwintering tactics. A morphological advantage in locomotion cost on snow did not always expand niche breadth. In contrast, a spatial niche could respond to (1) drastic landscape change by a diminishing understory due to snow, possibly leading to changes in predator-prey interactions, and (2) the mass of cold air, affecting thermoregulatory cost and food accessibility. When extraordinary snowfall occurred, the nonarboreal species with larger body sizes could niche shift, whereas the smaller-sized or semi-arboreal mammals did not. In addition, compared to omnivores, herbivores were prone to severe restriction of niche breadth due to a reduction in food accessibility under extreme climates. This study aimed to identify risk factors and combinations thereof that are associated with severe skin injuries due to the extravasation of injectable drugs. A cross-sectional study using the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report database was conducted according to the RECORD-PE checklist. Adverse event reports related to necrosis, ulcers, or erosions due to extravasation were considered "with severe skin injury," and others were considered "without severe skin injury." Approximately 255 cases "with" and 260 cases "without" severe skin injury were identified. The relationship between the incidence of severe skin injury and age, sex, drugs, and primary disease was evaluated using the χ2 test. Association rule mining was used to evaluate the correlation between each combination of factors and skin injury. Nine factors were identified as independent risk factors for severe skin injury, including age (<10 or ≥70 years), peripheral parenteral nutrition use, and mental disorders. The association rule mining results suggested that a combination of specific patient backgrounds and drug use was associated with the incidence of necrosis or ulcers. The growth rates of freshwater fish are known to change among populations under different habitat conditions. The Amur three‐lips (Opsariichthys uncirostris uncirostris), a cyprinid predator, is an endemic subspecies in the Lake Biwa–Yodogawa River system and Lake Mikata in western Japan but has also been unintentionally introduced into nonindigenous regions. Non‐native populations are known to have downsized owing to their adaptation to small habitats; however, only two habitats with substantially different sizes have been assessed previously. Therefore, in this study, native and non‐native Amur three‐lips populations were assessed, and their growth rates associated with population type (i.e., native/non‐native), habitat size, and sample period (i.e., in the 1960s or after the 2000s) were analyzed statistically. According to a literature search, seven previous studies reported the growth of this species and included mean length‐at‐age data (measured as body length with estimated age using otolith reading). They included three cases from the largest native habitat, Lake Biwa from different sample periods. The result of the multivariate analysis indicated that the growth rate of Amur three‐lips was higher in native populations than in non‐native populations and increased as habitat size increased. In addition, a model selection approach indicated that population type was a more influential covariate than habitat size. These findings suggest that Amur three‐lips exhibit "home‐field advantage" in terms of growth rate, that is, native populations grow larger than non‐native populations. Future studies conducted on a larger geographic scale will provide further insights into the adaptation of Amur three‐lips under various habitat conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The standard treatment for platinum-sensitive relapsed ovarian cancer (PSROC) is platinum-based chemotherapy followed by olaparib monotherapy. A retrospective study was conducted to identify factors affecting the survival of patients with PSROC undergoing olaparib monotherapy in real-world clinical settings. The study enrolled 122 patients who received olaparib monotherapy between April 2018 and December 2020 at three national centers in Japan. The study used the Kaplan–Meier method and univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazards models to evaluate the associations between factors and progression-free survival (PFS). Patients with BRCA1/2 mutations had a significantly longer median PFS than those without these mutations. Both the BRCA1/2 mutation-positive and mutation-negative groups exhibited a prolonged PFS when the platinum-free interval (PFI) was ≥ 12 months. Cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) level within reference values was significantly linked to prolonged PFS, while a high platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (≥ 210) was significantly associated with poor PFS in the BRCA1/2 mutation-negative group. The study suggests that a PFI of ≥ 12 months may predict survival after olaparib monotherapy in patients with PSROC, regardless of their BRCA1/2 mutation status. Additionally, a CA-125 level within reference values may be associated with extended survival in patients without BRCA1/2 mutations. A larger prospective study should confirm these findings. Cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT) is an important prognostic factor for an increasing number of cancer patients. Understanding of CAT among cancer care providers has grown in recent years, and guidelines for the prevention and treatment of CAT have been published in Japan and around the world. Quantifying biodiversity trends in economically developed countries, where depopulation, associated secondary succession, and climate warming are ongoing, provides insights for global biodiversity conservation in the 21st century. However, few studies have assessed the impacts of secondary succession and climate warming on species' population trends at a national scale. We estimated the population trends of common breeding bird species in Japan and examined the associations between the overall population trend and species traits with the nationwide bird count data on 47 species collected from 2009 to 2020. The overall population trend varied among species. Four species populations increased moderately, 18 were stable, and 11 declined moderately. Population trends for 13 species were uncertain. The difference in overall trends among the species was associated with their habitat group and temperature niche. Species with relatively low-temperature niches experienced more pronounced declines. Multispecies indicators showed a moderate increase in forest specialists and moderate declines in forest generalists (species that use both forests and open habitats) and open-habitat specialists. Forest generalists and open-habitat specialists also declined more rapidly at sites with more abandoned farmland. All species groups showed an accelerated decline or decelerated increase after 2015. These results suggest that common breeding birds in Japan are facing deteriorating trends as a result of nationwide changes in land use and climate. Future land-use planning and policies should consider the benefits of passive rewilding for forest specialists and active restoration measures (e.g., low-intensive forestry and agriculture) for nonforest specialists to effectively conserve biodiversity in the era of human depopulation and climate warming., (© 2023 The Authors. Introduction: In Japan, evacuation at home is expected to increase in the future as a post-disaster evacuation type due to the pandemic, aging, and diverse disabilities of the population. However, more disaster-related indirect deaths occurred in homes than in evacuation centers after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE). The health risks faced by evacuees at home have not been adequately discussed. Study Objective: This study aimed to clarify the gap in disaster health management for evacuees at home compared to the evacuees at the evacuation centers in Minamisanriku Town, which lost all health care facilities after the 2011 GEJE. Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional and quasi-experimental study based on the anonymized disaster medical records (DMRs) of patients from March 11 through April 10, 2011, that compared the evacuation-at-home and evacuation-center groups focusing on the day of the first medical intervention after the onset. Multivariable Cox regression analysis and propensity score (PS)-matching analysis were performed to identify the risk factors and causal relationship between the evacuation type and the delay of medical intervention. Results: Of the 2,838 eligible patients, 460 and 2,378 were in the evacuation-at-home and evacuation-center groups, respectively. In the month after the onset, the evacuation-at-home group had significantly lower rates of respiratory and mental health diseases than the evacuation-center group. However, the mean time to the first medical intervention was significantly delayed in the evacuation-at-home group (19.3 [SD = 6.1] days) compared to that in the evacuation-center group (14.1 [SD = 6.3] days); P <.001). In the multivariable Cox regression analysis, the hazard ratio (HR) of delayed medical intervention for evacuation-at-home was 2.31 with a 95% confident interval of 2.07–2.59. The PS-matching analysis of the adjusted 459 patients in each group confirmed that evacuation at home was significantly associated with delays in the first medical intervention (P <.001). Conclusion: This study suggested, for the first time, the causal relationship between evacuation at home and delay in the first medical intervention by PS-matching analysis. Although evacuation at home had several advantages in reducing the frequencies of some diseases, the delay in medical intervention could exacerbate the symptoms and be a cause of indirect death. Purpose: Little is known about the prognostic factors for survival after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) in elderly patients with early gastric cancer (EGC). The aim of this study is to determine prognostic factors and a prediction model of 3-year survival after ESD for EGC in patients aged ≥ 85 years. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the clinical outcomes of 740 patients with EGC aged ≥ 85 years, who were treated by ESD at 30 institutions in Japan. Overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) were calculated with the Kaplan–Meier method. Prediction models for 3-year OS after ESD were estimated using the Cox proportional hazards model based on Uno's C-statistics. Results: During the follow-up period, 309 patients died of any cause and 10 patients died of gastric cancer. OS and DSS after 3 years were 82.7% and 99.2%, respectively. No significant differences in OS were found among curability categories. The Cox proportional hazards model revealed the geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) and the Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) to be predictors of 3-year survival. We established a final model (EGC-2 model) expressed by GNRI − (2.2×CCI) with a cutoff value of 96. The overall survival rate was significantly lower in the model value < 96 group than in the model value ≥ 96 group (P < 0.001). Conclusions: The prediction model using GNRI and CCI will be useful to support decision-making for the treatment of EGC in elderly patients aged ≥ 85 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Deer have been a major resource for human populations for thousands of years. Anthropogenic activities, such as hunting, have influenced the genetic structure and distribution of deer populations. In Japan, wild Japanese sika deer (Cervus nippon) have been hunted since ancient times but have also been historically protected as sacred animals in several sanctuaries. Sika deer have been protected for over a thousand years in the religious sanctuary around the Kasuga Taisha Shrine on the Kii Peninsula, located in the center of Japan. Here, we used short sequence repeats (SSR) and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) to investigate the genetic diversity, population structure, and demography of Japanese sika deer inhabiting the Kii Peninsula, Japan, and discuss possible anthropogenic influences. Using SSR, three distinct genetic groups were distinguished on the Kii Peninsula: an Eastern genetic group, a Western genetic group, and an isolated genetic group with individuals in the religious sanctuary of Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara city. The isolated genetic sanctuary group had only the mtDNA haplotype S4. The SSR genotype data suggested a newer divergence time of the genetic groups of the religious sanctuary than would have occurred as a result of Late Quaternary climate change. This time scale coincided with the establishment of the sanctuary with Kasuga Taisha Shrine. Thus, the religious protection conserved genetic variation over a thousand years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: The need to identify novel biomarkers for early diagnosis and treatment of diabetic nephropathy is widely recognized. However, only a few studies have investigated the association between biomarkers and the onset of albuminuria. In this study, we aimed to investigate a panel of biomarkers suitable for predicting microalbuminuria., Methods: Some 346 Japanese people with type 2 diabetes exhibiting normoalbuminuria were studied. The endpoint was defined as the onset of microalbuminuria. Thirty biomarkers were selected from among urinary biomarkers described in previous studies. A panel of biomarkers was selected using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO). The prognostic performance of the developed panel was evaluated., Results: During a mean follow-up of 6.2 years, 45 people progressed to microalbuminuria. A composite panel of six biomarkers (monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, osteopontin, soluble human tumour necrosis factor receptor-1, tenascin C, vascular endothelial growth factor-A and kidney injury molecule-1) was developed using LASSO. Compared with the basal model comprising estimated GFR and urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio, addition of these six biomarkers significantly increased the overall C index from 0.773 to 0.824 (P = 0.019). Net reclassification improvement and integrated discrimination improvement were estimated to be 0.412 (P = 0.049) and 0.040 (P = 0.040), respectively. Decision curve analysis also showed that the model with the six novel biomarkers had a better prognostic value for predicting the onset of microalbuminuria. This study reviewed the literature on psycho-social treatments for reducing school absenteeism in Japan, particularly focussing on those featuring a cognitive-behavioural approach. To extract studies, we screened journals published by 52 academic societies that are members of the Union of the Japanese Psychological Association and reviewed relevant peer-reviewed papers. We consequently analysed 31 cases: 21 elementary school students and 10 junior high school students. We found that to effectively address school absenteeism in Japan, cognitive-behavioural approaches should feature a combination of two or more behavioural techniques. These findings may help Japanese practitioners, such as school counsellors, explain to clients the benefits of choosing cognitive-behavioural approaches, as well as the prospects for support. Haemadipsa japonica is a Japanese land leech that feeds on the blood of host animals, mainly the sika deer (Cervus nippon). The distribution of H. japonica has expanded since the 1990s, possibly due to sika deer population increases. Haemadipsa japonica populations were found in the northern and southern regions of Tochigi Prefecture, central Japan. Previous investigations reported that these populations are genetically differentiated between the north and south, although the sika deer distribution extends throughout the northern and southern regions. We hypothesized that the migration of sika deer might be limited, thus maintaining the two H. japonica genetic groups and restricting its range expansion. We evaluated this hypothesis by investigating the genetic structure of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and nuclear microsatellites (nSSR) of sika deer samples collected from Tochigi Prefecture and from H. japonica bloodmeal samples (invertebrate‐derived DNA; iDNA). The sika deer mtDNA presented two haplotypes (G‐ and A‐haplotypes) without a clear genetic structure. Conversely, the sika deer nSSR analysis indicated clear genetic differentiation between deer in the northern and southern regions, corresponding to the two H. japonica genetic groups. This indicates that sika deer movement is restricted to narrow regions in Tochigi Prefecture. Therefore, we conclude that the current H. japonica expansion in the prefecture likely depends on the migration of sika deer, only occurring within the northern and southern regions, even though this is driven by sika deer migration. Introduction: Daprodustat is an approved treatment for anemia of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Japan. Methods: This post hoc analysis evaluated pooled safety data for daprodustat from 3 phase 3 Japanese studies in dialysis‐dependent and nondialysis patients with anemia of CKD. Results: Median drug exposure duration was 365 days for both daprodustat (N = 369) and injectable erythropoiesis‐stimulating agent (ESA, N = 285). The incidence per 100 patient‐years of on‐therapy adverse events (AEs) was 363.1 and 306.4 in the daprodustat and ESA groups, respectively. The incidence per 100 patient‐years of thromboembolic and retinal events were 5.55 and 6.91 (daprodustat) and 6.28 and 7.46 (ESA), respectively. Cardiovascular and malignancy events were similar between groups, although analysis of these were limited by sample size and study duration. Conclusion: The safety of daprodustat was comparable to ESA in this pooled analysis, although further large‐scale research is needed to evaluate long‐term risks including cardiovascular and malignancy events. Recently, dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT) for battery electric vehicles has been actively studied because it can enhance their cruising range and reduce their charging time. An SS type WPT circuit is simpler and more efficient than a WPT circuit with a filter, such as an LCC type WPT circuit. By contrast, the leakage magnetic field generated by the harmonic current is a problem that needs to be addressed. The leakage magnetic field is limited by the Radio Act and the Ordinance for Regulating Radio Equipment in Japan. This study aims to reduce the leakage magnetic field generated by the harmonic current using a high‐frequency switching technology. The inverter and rectifier are operated using pulse width modulation (PWM) with a high carrier frequency. The effectiveness of the proposed method was experimentally verified using a GaN inverter and rectifier. As a result, the proposed method can drastically reduce the leakage magnetic field, especially, the magnetic field generated by the current harmonics of order greater than five. Aims: Hypoxia‐inducible factor‐prolyl hydroxylase (HIF‐PH) inhibitors have been developed for the treatment of renal anaemia; however, no study has evaluated the safety and efficacy of HIF‐PH inhibitors in patients with heart failure (HF). This study was designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of daprodustat, a HIF‐PH inhibitor, in patients with HF and renal anaemia. Methods and results: We designed a pilot, multi‐centre, open‐label, randomized controlled study, in which 50 patients with HF complicated with chronic kidney disease and anaemia will be randomized 1:1 to either the daprodustat or control group at seven sites in Japan. Study entry requires New York Heart Association Class II HF symptoms or a history of hospitalization due to HF, an estimated glomerular filtration rate of <60 mL/min/1.73 m2, and a haemoglobin level of 7.5 to <11.0 g/dl. Patients randomized to the daprodustat group will be treated with oral daprodustat, and the dose will be uptitrated according to the changes in the haemoglobin level from previous visits. In this study, we will evaluate the impact of HIF‐PH inhibitors on cardiac function using advanced cardiovascular imaging modalities, including cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. The primary outcome is the haemoglobin level at 16 weeks of randomization, and all adverse events will be recorded and evaluated for any association with daprodustat treatment. Conclusion: Considering the hypothetical upside and downside of using HIF‐PH inhibitors in anaemic patients with HF and chronic kidney disease, and because there are virtually no safe and effective treatments for patients with anaemia not caused by iron deficiency, our study results will contribute significantly to this field. Background: Hyporesponsiveness to erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) has been highlighted as a potential risk factor for cardiovascular disease in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods: We assessed cross-sectionally the prevalence, associated factors, and treatment status of anemia and ESA hyporesponsiveness in 4460 non-dialysis-dependent CKD patients enrolled in a multicenter cohort in Japan. Anemia was defined as a hemoglobin (Hb) level of less than 11 g/dL or receiving ESA therapy. ESA hyporesponsiveness was defined by the erythropoietin-resistance index (ERI), which was the erythropoietin dose per week divided by body weight and Hb level (U/kg/week/g/dl). Results: Of the 4460 patients, 1050 (23.5%) had anemia. ESAs were administered to 626 patients, reaching a percentage of 57.5% of patients with stage G5 CKD. However, the ESA treatment rate was only 49.0% in patients with a hemoglobin level of < 11 g/dL. The proportion of patients receiving iron supplementation was lower than that of patients receiving ESAs regardless of CKD stage or hemoglobin level, and a significant proportion of patients did not receive iron supplementation, even those with iron deficiency. The ERI increased with CKD stage progression, and the multiple regression analysis showed that age, female sex, body mass index, cholesterol, glomerular filtration rate, and intact parathyroid hormone level were independent contributors. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate that many Japanese patients with non-dialysis-dependent CKD receiving ESAs fail to maintain adequate hemoglobin levels. The growing populations of sika deer ( Cervus nippon yesoensis) in Hokkaido, Japan, are having increasingly negative impacts on forests. Although the percentage or frequency of browsed twigs and seedlings is a useful index of the impact of deer on forests, differences in the browse preferences of deer among tree species should also be considered. We evaluated the woody browse preferences of sika deer and examined a method for evaluating deer impacts based on the occurrence of browsing scars on seedlings, together with browse preferences. We also validated the percentages of browsed seedlings irrespective of browse preferences as an index of deer impact. We measured the heights of seedlings 30-200 cm tall in five 5 × 20 m plots located in Abies sachalinensis plantations in each of seven tracts and recorded browsing damage that occurred on leader shoots of seedlings. Browse species preference was evaluated using a generalized linear model (GLM) that included the seven tracts, species, and seedling height as explanatory variables. The results of the GLM suggest that differences in browse preferences among species are continuous and cannot be categorized discretely. The tract coefficients are considered to be an index of deer impact levels and can be estimated from the percentage of browsed seedlings for a species if the species coefficient is given. Simple percentages of browsed seedlings can also be used as an index of impact level, regardless of browse preferences, though these may be inaccurate, especially when the site is dominated by significantly preferred or avoided species. Reintroducing apex predators is an important approach in ecosystem restoration; however, it is challenging. Wolves (Canis lupus) were exterminated in Japan around 1900, and since then, there has been a lack of top predators throughout the country. Currently, the wild ungulate population is increasing, causing agricultural and forest damage. This has triggered an ongoing debate among researchers and nongovernmental organizations on whether wolves should be reintroduced to promote self-regulating biodiverse ecosystems. We conducted a nationwide survey to examine public attitudes toward wolf reintroduction (WR) in Japan. We sent online questionnaires to 88,318 citizens across the country. Among the 12,028 respondents, excluding those with invalid or incomplete answers and unqualified respondents, we obtained and analyzed 7500 responses that were representative of Japanese citizens in terms of some key sociodemographic attributes. More respondents disagreed with WR (39.9%) than agreed (17.1%), and many respondents (43.0%) were undecided. Structural equation modeling revealed that risk perceptions affected public attitudes, implying that the greater the perceived threat of wolf attacks, the less likely people are to support WR. In contrast, attitudes toward wolves (e.g., "I like wolves.") influenced by wildlife value orientation and beliefs about the ecological role of wolves (e.g., controlling deer populations) positively affected public attitudes toward WR. Those who had a positive attitude toward WR showed intentions to engage in behaviors that support WR. Our results suggest that the dissemination of information related to the ecological role of wolves and the development of a more mutualistic mindset in people could positively influence public support for WR in Japan., (© 2023 The Authors. The effect of sex‐biased dispersal in mammalian ecology and evolution can be elucidated by focusing on maternally or paternally inherited DNA polymorphisms. In sika deer, the genetic structure of the maternal lineage has been clarified by studies based on mitochondrial DNA variation. However, the genetic structure of the paternal lineage has not been well analyzed due to the limited number of point mutations in Y chromosome sequences. In this study, we focused on mutations of highly polymorphic simple sequence repeats (SSRs) in the Y chromosome and developed 16 Y chromosome SSR markers to evaluate male‐biased dispersal in sika deer. In total, 55 alleles and 31 multi‐locus haplotypes were detected from these 16 loci, revealing clear genetic differentiation among populations (F′ST = 0.783). In particular, there were unique alleles for the native individuals on Tanegashima and Yakushima Islands and introduced exotic individuals from Taiwan. These markers are highly useful for evaluating not only historical male‐mediated dispersal, genetic structure, and demography of the native populations in Japan, but also the impact of artificial introductions on hybridization, especially the introgression of alleles from escaped farmed individuals to native populations. The red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is the world's most widespread member of the order Carnivora, occurring across a large range of latitudes and inhabiting multiple habitat types. There is no comprehensive study of how the diets of this flexible generalist vary across the whole Asian continent. We conducted a meta‐analysis of red fox diets in Japan, examining the patterns in food type selection and their associations with seasonality, regional climate, vegetation productivity, and human influences at the national scale. Using linear mixed models, we revealed significant seasonal effects on the frequency of occurrence of mammals in general, ungulate carcasses, birds, and invertebrates in the diets of red foxes. Furthermore, the frequency of occurrence of mammals significantly decreased with mean annual temperature and increased with vegetation productivity. The frequency of invertebrate occurrences increased with temperature, and that of anthropogenic foods increased with human population density. Trophic diversity and dietary niche breadth increased with annual temperature but decreased with vegetation productivity and population density. These results suggest that the red fox is a flexible predator in Japan that adapts its foraging patterns according to variations in resource availability and abiotic conditions, while persistently consuming a certain ratio of animal prey to meet its metabolic requirements. Modifications of predators' trophic niches can influence structures of prey communities and interactions with sympatric competitors. Extravasation occurs when injectable drugs leak out of the blood vessels, damaging the surrounding tissues and causing a variety of skin injuries. This study aimed to comprehensively analyze extravasation risk, skin injury profiles, and outcomes for suspect drugs from the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report (JADER) database. Adverse events were defined according to the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities/Japanese version; the term extravasation (Standardized MedDRA Query Code: 20000136) was used in this analysis. The names of adverse events were entered as unified preferred terms and redefined to evaluate skin injury profiles. In addition, skin injury outcomes were divided into 2 broad categories: "improvement" and "no improvement." Reporting odds ratios were used to detect signals for adverse events. A total of 656 cases of extravasation-related adverse events were reported between April 2004 and January 2022. Signals for extravasation-related adverse events were detected from 11 drugs. Then, their respective skin injury profiles and outcomes were determined. These results suggest a relationship between adverse events associated with extravasation and 11 drugs and identify the characteristics of each skin injury and their outcomes. Hatch timing in autumn- spawning stream salmonids is poorly understood in the subarctic region because snow cover prevents direct sampling of cryptic early life stages. Otolith micro- increment analysis was used to infer hatch dates of white- spotted charr Salvelinus leucomaenis (Pallas) and masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou (Brevoort) in a mainstem- tributary network in northern Japan. Accuracy and precision were validated by ageing hatchery individuals with known hatch date ranges. In July 2018, 93 wild young- of- the- year white- spotted charr and 81 masu salmon were collected and aged. Masu salmon hatched, on average, 24 days earlier (mean = February 8) than white- spotted charr (March 4), and hatch dates spanned a minimum of 2 months for each species. In masu salmon, hatch dates of individuals collected in the mainstem were nearly 3 weeks earlier than those in a tributary. This study provided knowledge on intra- and inter- specific variation in hatch timing of native salmonids in a subarctic stream network. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
