A.H. Cottrell led a large team of scientists and engineers as Deputy Director of the Metallurgy Division of the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell, between 1955 and 1958. The team sought to develop a fundamental understanding of the effect of aggressive operating conditions on the properties and behaviour of materials used in the construction of reactors, which provided important and critical insights into their design, operation and safety. The story is told through the experiences and research activities of one of Cottrell’s junior research staff. It offers an insight into the contributions made by Cottrell to the science and technology regarding materials used in the early days of building reactors for the generation of nuclear energy. Engineers make an enormous contribution to promoting the wellbeing of individuals and the communities in which they live, but engineering may also give rise to adverse consequences. Engineering therefore requires ethical awareness, and professional engineers often use ethical codes to guide their actions. The content of the Royal Academy of Engineering’s authoritative Statement of Ethical Principles is discussed and compared to the paradigmatic Rule of St Benedict. This leads to suggestions for the development of an enriched code for engineering that considers not only what actions are desirable but also how and why they should be carried out. Issues arising in the formulation of an enriched code acceptable also to those of no explicit faith or of other faiths are considered. It is suggested that the development of enriched professional codes is a general and strategically important challenge for theological ethics. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The article focuses on Barnes Willis, a famous British engineer of the twentieth century and his idea of the strength and decline of England. Willis was best remembered for his development of the Bouncing Bomb. His wartime work brought him significant recognition from the government and media alike. He was given the honor Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 1943 for his work on bomber design. He argued that England had once been a mighty nation that had declined industrially, politically and morally. The nation's glory lay in its imperial might and mercantile dominance and its political and industrial decline were due to the loss of empire, cost of World War II and the inability to capitalize on English scientific discoveries and technological advances.

The article focuses on two calculating machines invented by Samuel Morland in London, England. The article focuses on the vital role played by English engineer Joseph Bazalgette in construction of London's Victorian sewers. Bazalgette had no medical background and was of small stature and somewhat delicate health. He hailed from French Huguenot ancestry. He did more for the health of Londoners in the mid-19th century, than anyone before or since. Bazalgette designed and engineered the north Thames embankment; the southern component involved the construction of the new Saint Thomas Hospital.

The article describes the integrated approach used by the Design at Dyson in designing products at its headquarter in Wiltshire, England in which engineers view designing, engineering,model-making, testing and machining as overlapping disciplines without boundaries. They starts by questioning existing technology and brainstorming aspects that can be improved. Afterwards, initial ideas are sketched and cardboard modelling takes place. A computer-aided design software is also used.

This paper is taken from a talk given by the author during the September 26–30, 1993 Joint Triennial Conference in London and Maidstone, Kent, U.K., during a session entitled, “The Environmental Challenge for Engineers.” The writer begins by defining the word “environment” as “being surrounded,” then describes how the civil engineer's efforts at service to the public are surrounded on at least five sides, namely the public's desires, national governmental laws and regulations, the legal profession, local officials' needs, and the development of increasingly sensitive analytical instruments that seem to take on a life of their own. The writer then addresses the need for civil engineers to adapt to changing conditions, feelings, and philosophies. The paper ends by indicating that the environmental challenge is the civil engineer who has the technical knowledge, a diverse range of expertise, and experience with those entities within a community directly affected by our work, and who must be the leader of professional teams facing today's complex projects and those in the future. The British Engineering Council has proposed a new Code of Practice on risk issues for engineers, which is intended to ensure better risk assessment and risk management. Details of the ten-point code were presented to the Engineering Assembly at its annual conference at Lancaster University in Lancaster, England, on 22 July. Important considerations include the need to: Safeguard society and the environment; have a disciplined and comprehensive approach to risk issues and human safety; be aware of the legal framework within which an engineer works; understand commercial reality in so far as it relates to safety.

Statistics for Industry Ltd., are running a series of practical statistical workshops for engineers throughout 1987 in Great Britain. An assessment of in-service reliability education in Great Britain has suggested that there are severe shortfalls in the current provision for practising engineers and scientists. To attempt to remedy these, the British National Centre of Systems Reliability (NCSR) and Trent Polytechnic, Nottingham, England have joined together in a short course programme aimed specifically at providing the data analysis, modelling, and computing and keyboard skills that are necessary for practising reliability engineers. To fit in with industrial workpatterns, the programme consists of one-week short course modules, which are largely free-standing and are available as such to interested participants.
