We investigate the potential and accuracy of clustering-based redshift estimation using the method proposed by Ménard et al. This technique enables the inference of redshift distributions from measurements of the spatial clustering of arbitrary sources, using a set of reference objects for which redshifts are known. We apply it to a sample of spectroscopic galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and show that, after carefully controlling the sampling efficiency over the sky, we can estimate redshift distributions with high accuracy. Probing the full colour space of the SDSS galaxies, we show that we can recover the corresponding mean redshifts with an accuracy ranging from δz = 0.001 to 0.01. We indicate that this mapping can be used to infer the redshift probability distribution of a single galaxy. We show how the lack of information on the galaxy bias limits the accuracy of the inference and show comparisons between clustering redshifts and photometric redshifts for this data set. This analysis demonstrates, using real data, that clustering-based redshift inference provides a powerful data-driven technique to explore the redshift distribution of arbitrary data sets, without any prior knowledge of the spectral energy distribution of the sources. The mid-infrared-to-ultraviolet (0.1–10 μm) spectral energy distribution (SED) shapes of 407 X-ray-selected radio-quiet type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the wide-field ‘Cosmic Evolution Survey’ (COSMOS) have been studied for signs of evolution. For a sub-sample of 200 radio-quiet quasars with black hole mass estimates and host galaxy corrections, we studied their mean SEDs as a function of a broad range of redshift, bolometric luminosity, black hole mass and Eddington ratio, and compared them with the Elvis et al. (E94) type 1 AGN mean SED. We found that the mean SEDs in each bin are closely similar to each other, showing no statistical significant evidence of dependence on any of the analysed parameters. We also measured the SED dispersion as a function of these four parameters, and found no significant dependences. The dispersion of the XMM-COSMOS SEDs is generally larger than E94 SED dispersion in the ultraviolet, which might be due to the broader ‘window function’ for COSMOS quasars, and their X-ray-based selection. To exploit synergies between the Herschel Space Observatory and next generation radio facilities, we have extended the semi-empirical extragalactic radio continuum simulation of Wilman et al. to the mid- and far-infrared. Here, we describe the assignment of infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) to the star-forming galaxies and active galactic nuclei, using Spitzer 24, 70 and 160 μm and SCUBA 850 μm survey results as the main constraints. Star-forming galaxies dominate the source counts, and a model in which their far-infrared–radio correlation and infrared SED assignment procedure are invariant with redshift underpredicts the observed 24 and 70 μm source counts. The 70 μm deficit can be eliminated if the star-forming galaxies undergo stronger luminosity evolution than originally assumed for the radio simulation, a requirement which may be partially ascribed to known non-linearity in the far-infrared–radio correlation at low luminosity if it evolves with redshift. At 24 μm, the shortfall is reduced if the star-forming galaxies develop SEDs with cooler dust and correspondingly stronger polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission features with increasing redshift at a given far-infrared luminosity, but this trend may reverse at in order not to overproduce the submillimetre source counts. The resulting model compares favourably with recent Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimetre Telescope ( BLAST) results, and we have extended the simulation data base to aid the interpretation of Herschel surveys. We investigate the properties of optically passive spirals and dusty red galaxies in the A901/2 cluster complex at redshift ∼0.17 using rest-frame near-ultraviolet–optical spectral energy distributions, 24-μm infrared data and Hubble Space Telescope morphologies from the STAGES data set. The cluster sample is based on COMBO-17 redshifts with an rms precision of . We find that ‘dusty red galaxies’ and ‘optically passive spirals’ in A901/2 are largely the same phenomenon, and that they form stars at a substantial rate, which is only four times lower than that in blue spirals at fixed mass. This star formation is more obscured than in blue galaxies and its optical signatures are weak. They appear predominantly in the stellar mass range of where they constitute over half of the star-forming galaxies in the cluster; they are thus a vital ingredient for understanding the overall picture of star formation quenching in clusters. We find that the mean specific star formation rate (SFR) of star-forming galaxies in the cluster is clearly lower than in the field, in contrast to the specific SFR properties of blue galaxies alone, which appear similar in cluster and field. Such a rich red spiral population is best explained if quenching is a slow process and morphological transformation is delayed even more. At , such galaxies are rare, suggesting that their quenching is fast and accompanied by morphological change. We investigate claims that recent ultra-deep X-ray surveys are detecting starbursts at cosmologically interesting redshifts . We combine X-ray data from the 2 Ms Chandra Deep Field-North and multiwavelength observations obtained as part of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS)-North to build the Spectral Energy Distributions (UV, optical, infrared) of X-ray sources in this field. These are fit with model templates providing an estimate of the total infrared luminosity of each source. We then exploit the tight correlation between infrared and X-ray luminosities for star-forming galaxies, established in the local Universe, to select sources that are dominated by star formation rather than supermassive black hole accretion. This approach is efficient in discriminating normal galaxies from active galactic nuclei (AGN) over a wide range of star formation rates, from quiescent systems to starbursts. The above methodology results in a sample of 45 X-ray selected star-forming systems at a median redshift , the majority of which (60 per cent) are either luminous or ultraluminous infrared galaxies. This sample is least affected by incompleteness and residual AGN contamination and is therefore well suited for cosmological studies. We quantify the X-ray evolution of these sources by constructing their differential X-ray counts, d N/d S, and comparing them with evolving luminosity function models. The results are consistent with luminosity evolution of the form with . This is similar to the evolution rate of star-forming galaxies selected at other wavelengths, suggesting that the deep X-ray surveys, like the Chandra Deep Field-North, are indeed finding the starburst galaxy population that drives the rapid evolution of the global star formation rate density in the range . Our analysis also reveals a separate population of infrared-faint X-ray sources at moderate z. These include old galaxies but also systems that are X-ray luminous for their stellar mass compared to local ellipticals. We argue that these may be post-starbursts that will, over time, become fainter at X-ray wavelengths and will eventually evolve into early-type systems (i.e. E/S0). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This is the third in a series of papers that present observations and results for a sample of 76 ultrasteep-spectrum radio sources designed to find galaxies at high redshift. Here we present multifrequency radio observations, from the Australia Telescope Compact Array, for a subset of 37 galaxies from the sample. Matched resolution observations at 2.3, 4.8 and 6.2 GHz are presented for all galaxies, with the galaxies additionally observed at 8.6 and 18 GHz. New angular size constraints are reported for 19 sources based on high-resolution 4.8- and 6.2-GHz observations. Functional forms for the rest-frame spectral energy distributions are derived: 89 per cent of the sample is well characterized by a single power law, whilst the remaining 11 per cent show some flattening towards higher frequencies: not one source shows any evidence for high-frequency steepening. We discuss the implications of this result in light of the empirical correlation between redshift and spectral index seen in flux-limited samples of radio galaxies. Finally, a new physical mechanism to explain the redshift – spectral index correlation is posited: extremely steep-spectrum radio galaxies in the local universe usually reside at the centres of rich galaxy clusters. We argue that if a higher fractions of radio galaxies, as a function of redshift, are located in environments with densities similar to nearby rich clusters, then this could be a natural interpretation for the correlation. We discuss the panchromatic properties of 99 088 galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 1 ‘main’ spectroscopic sample (a flux-limited sample for 1360 deg2). These galaxies are positionally matched to sources detected by ROSAT, Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX), two-Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS), Infrared Astronomical Satellite ( IRAS), Green Bank GB6 survey (GB6), Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-centimetres (FIRST), NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) and Westerbork Northern Sky Survey (WENSS). The matching fraction varies from <1 per cent for ROSAT and GB6 to ∼40 per cent for GALEX and 2MASS. In addition to its size, the advantages of this sample are well-controlled selection effects, faint flux limits and the wealth of measured parameters, including accurate X-ray to radio photometry, angular sizes and optical spectra. We find strong correlations between the detection fraction at other wavelengths and optical properties such as flux, colours and emission-line strengths. For example, ∼2/3 of SDSS ‘main’ galaxies classified as active galactic nucleus (AGN) using emission-line strengths are detected by 2MASS, while the corresponding fraction for star-forming galaxies (SFs) is only ∼1/10. Similarly, over 90 per cent of galaxies detected by IRAS display strong emission lines in their optical spectra, compared to ∼50 per cent for the whole SDSS sample. Using GALEX, SDSS and 2MASS data, we construct the ultraviolet–infrared (UV–IR) broad-band spectral energy distributions for various types of galaxies, and find that they form a nearly one-parameter family. For example, the SDSS u- and r-band data, supplemented with redshift, can be used to ‘predict’ K-band magnitudes measured by 2MASS with an rms scatter of only 0.2 mag. When a dust content estimate determined from SDSS spectra with the aid of models is also utilized, this scatter decreases to 0.1 mag and can be fully accounted for by measurement uncertainties. We demonstrate that this interstellar dust content, inferred from optical SDSS spectra by Kauffmann et al., is indeed higher for galaxies detected by IRAS and that it can be used to ‘predict’ measured IRAS 60 μm flux density within a factor of 2 using only SDSS data. We also show that the position of a galaxy in the emission-line-based Baldwin–Phillips–Terlevich diagram is correlated with the optical light concentration index and u− r colour determined from the SDSS broad-band imaging data, and discuss changes in the morphology of this diagram induced by requiring detections at other wavelengths. Notably, we find that SDSS ‘main’ galaxies detected by GALEX include a non-negligible fraction (10–30 per cent) of AGNs, and hence do not represent a clean sample of starburst galaxies. We study the IR–radio correlation and find evidence that its slope may be different for AGN and SFs and related to the Hα/Hβ line-strength ratio. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a comparison between the published optical, infrared (IR) and CO spectroscopic redshifts of 15 (sub)mm galaxies and their photometric redshifts as derived from long-wavelength (radio–mm–far-IR) photometric data. The redshift accuracy measured for 12 submillimetre (submm) galaxies with at least one robustly determined colour in the radio–mm–far-IR regime is. Despite the wide range of spectral energy distributions in the local galaxies that are used in an unbiased manner as templates, this analysis demonstrates that photometric redshifts can be efficiently derived for submm galaxies with a precision ofusing only the rest-frame far-IR to radio wavelength data. Galaxy source counts that simultaneously fit the deep mid-infrared surveys at 24 microns and 15 microns made by theSpitzer Space Telescopeand theInfrared Space Observatory(ISO), respectively, are presented for two phenomenological models. The models are based on starburst and luminous infrared galaxy dominated populations. Both models produce excellent fits to the counts in both wavebands and provide an explanation for the high-redshift population seen in the longerSpitzer24-micron band supporting the hypothesis that they are luminous–ultraluminous infrared galaxies at, being the mid-infrared counterparts to the submillimetre galaxy population. The source counts are characterized by strong evolution to redshift unity, followed by less drastic evolution to higher redshift. The number–redshift distributions in both wavebands are well explained by the effect of the many mid-infrared features passing through the observation windows. The sharp upturn at around a millijansky in the 15-μm counts in particular depends critically on the distribution of mid-infrared features around 12μm, in the assumed spectral energy distribution.
