Jember is surrounded and limited by highlands such as Mount Argopura, Mount Ijen, Mount Argopura, and the southern karst mountains. In 2015-2022, the Jember area flooded during the rainy season and dried during the dry season. Changes in land cover that do not follow the science of soil preservation will cause disasters, including landslides and erosion. The purpose of this study is to assess the risk of landslides on the slopes of Mount Argopura through the Geographic Information System. The study used a field survey method that was divided into several stages, including making a working map, conducting a field survey, and analyzing the data in the laboratory. The sensitivity analysis of the landslide level used as the basis for the assessment used the relationship between the parameters of soil erodibility, soil erosion, slope and soil conservation, and slope length. The sensitivity of the level of landslide risk on Mount Argopura is divided into five classes, from very light to very heavy. The very light category covers 4.92% of the total area with erosion of 0.47 t/ha/year. The very heavy class covers 39.70% of the total area, with 1,360.79 t/ha/year erosion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Landslides are the most dangerous and common natural phenomena causing higher number of victims and damages in Piemonte (north-western Italy). An integrated statistical approach to identify the main predisposing and triggering factor causing shallow landslides occurrence based on a large dataset of historical rainfall-induced shallow landslides and a long-time series of rainfall data is presented. Historical shallow landslide events were compared with territorial and rainfall characteristics. Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis (ESDA) has been performed in order to explore the spatial distributions of landslides with the environmental quantitative variables (morphometry and rainfall) to identify possible patterns of spatial autocorrelation. ESDA showed strong autocorrelation of landslide locations with rainfall variables, while resulting in low values for morphometric parameters at the investigated scale. Moreover, by intersecting landslides distribution with categorical land thematic parameters (land thematic maps) allowed to identify areas with different landslide density occurrence. Resulting susceptibility-related areas were used to improve the landslides regional Early Warning System of Piemonte based on refined empirical intensity vs duration (I-D) rainfall thresholds. Most regional landslide warning systems utilize empirically derived rainfall thresholds that are difficult to improve without recalibration to additional landslide events. To address this limitation, we explored the use of synthetic rainfall to generate thousands of possible storm patterns and coupled them with a physics‐based hydrology and slope stability model for various antecedent soil saturation scenarios to analyze pore water pressure and factor of safety metrics. We used these metrics to generate two‐tiered alert thresholds that can be employed to assess shallow landslide potential for any given combination of storm and antecedent wetness. When applied to the San Francisco Bay region (CA, USA), the results are consistent with events that caused widespread landsliding. Our deterministic modeling approach, which accounts for plausible ranges in soil hydraulic and mechanical properties, can inform the development of the next generation of warning systems for rainfall‐induced landsliding. Plain Language Summary: Providing accurate warning in advance of rainfall‐induced landsliding can help reduce loss of life and property but requires knowledge of hillslope wetness and future rainfall conditions to forecast when widespread landsliding is likely. However, typical landslide warning systems consider only the rainfall characteristics (e.g., rainfall amount, duration, and/or intensity) that were measured during past landslide events. These are used to define a set of rainfall conditions, or a threshold, for which landsliding should be expected within a given area. When a rainfall threshold does not perform well for subsequent landsliding events, it can be difficult to diagnose the problem because hillslope wetness is not considered. We present an approach to develop landslide thresholds that accounts for both rainfall and hillslope wetness. The results are consistent with historical and recent widespread landsliding events in our study region and, more importantly, can be related to measurable properties of hillslopes. This more direct approach could revolutionize the development of the next generation of landslide warning systems. Many landslides were triggered by heavy rainfall from 29 June to 1 July 2017 in Ningxiang County, Hunan Province, China. A field investigation into one of the landslides, known as the Wangjiawan landslide, was undertaken on July 3, 2017, to understand the landslide mechanisms and the factors that triggered the event. The landslide is a translational and rotational slide that degraded downslope to an earth flow. It occurred on a steeply dipping mud-rich slate intercalation. Field investigation shows that the landslide had a movement rate of more than 25 m/s and had been triggered by up to 338 mm of continuous rainfall over 2 days. The landslide was fast-moving because it occurred on a steep slope and showed a rapid reduction in shear strength. The landslide resulted in nine fatalities and 19 injuries, most during initial rescue efforts. To mitigate a possible secondary landslide disaster, later emergency measures including evacuation of the survivors, setting up warning signs, and covering landslide cracks with plastic sheeting were adopted. In the face of climate change, the assessment of land transport infrastructure exposure towards adverse climate events is of major importance for Europe's economic prosperity and social wellbeing. In this study, a climate index estimating rainfall patterns which trigger landslides in central Europe is analysed until the end of this century and compared to present-day conditions. The analysis of the potential future development of landslide risk is based on an ensemble of dynamically downscaled climate projections which are driven by the SRES A1B socio-economic scenario. Resulting regional-scale climate change projections across central Europe are concatenated with Europe's road and railway network. Results indicate overall increases of landslide occurrence. While flat terrain at low altitudes exhibits an increase of about 1 more potentially landslide-inducing rainfall period per year until the end of this century, higher elevated regions are more affected and show increases of up to 14 additional periods. This general spatial distribution emerges in the near future (2021-2050) but becomes more pronounced in the remote future (2071-2100). Since largest increases are to be found in Alsace, potential impacts of an increasing amount of landslides are discussed using the example of a case study covering the Black Forest mountain range in Baden-Württemberg by further enriching the climate information with additional geodata. The findings derived are suitable to support political decision makers and European authorities in transport, freight and logistics by offering detailed information on which parts of Europe's ground transport network are at particularly high risk concerning landslide activity. Landslides triggered by rainfall are a major multiple geological hazard on Qin-ba Mountain. Debris landslides in the shallow layer make up a large proportion of all landslides. A flume experiment was conducted to successfully initiate shallow debris landslides using artificial rainfall in Zhouzhi County, Qin-ba Mountain. The results confirmed a strong correlation between the deformation of the slope and pore-water pressure and moisture content. Slope deformation and failure were observed, and a possible mechanism was interpreted based on the experimental results. The primary effects of rainfall on shallow debris landslides on Qin-ba Mountain are the generation of a seepage force and a decrease in the effective stress of the sliding surface as a result of increasing pore-water pressure. The effect of rainfall on the shear strength parameters is inconspicuous, which might be attributed to the relatively high saturation of debris soils under natural conditions. The failure type in Test 1 is considered to be a progressive failure, which is a typical failure mode for homogeneous shallow debris slopes on Qin-ba Mountain, particularly for slopes exposed to artificial excavation. The deformation in Test 2 with higher density, merely taking the form of surface erosion, usually occurs in the regions with the least artificial disturbance. The two deformation types can be primarily attributed to differences in the soil density; the higher density reflected the smaller number and size of inside pores and led to lower soil permeability, which further influenced the distribution of the pore-water pressure, direction of seepage force, and slope deformation. Therefore, higher soil density changed by compaction is beneficial for the stability of shallow debris slopes on Qin-ba Mountain, even with high pore-water pressure. In subsequent work, a series of experiments with various densities should be conducted to explore the dividing point between the two deformation modes, and in addition, tests with larger slope gradients should also be considered. The increase of rainfall and rise of groundwater level can cause frequent failures of unsaturated soil slopes that result in catastrophic landslides. This paper proposes a stochastic method for predicting the risk of failure of an infinite soil slope subjected to unsaturated infiltration flow. Stochastic models for shear stress and strength at an arbitrary plane of an infinite slope are developed. The accuracy of the proposed method is verified with the Monte Carlo simulation method. The merit of the proposed method lies in its analytical form, which can easily facilitate practical applications. Furthermore, a risk-based sensitivity analysis is undertaken in this study to identify the factors that are the most random and that affect the slope failure most significantly. It is found in this study that the developed stochastic models can capture the randomness of all factors that contribute to slope failure. It is also found that the slope inclination angle (θ) soil air entry value (ψb) water table rise from matric suction (yb) dry soil unit weight (γd) and soil-specific constant (aϕ) are important random variables in the accurate prediction of slope failure. The development of an early warning system for landslides due to rainfall has become an indispensable part for landslide risk mitigation. This paper explains the application of the hydrological FLaIR (Forecasting of Landslides Induced by Rainfall) model, correlating rainfall amount and landslide events. The FLaIR model comprises of two modules: RL (Rainfall-Landslide) which correlates rainfall and landslide occurrence and RF (Rainfall-Forecasting) which allows simulation of future rainfall events. The model can predetermine landslides based on identification of mobility function Y(.) which links actual rainfall and incidence of landslide occurrence. The critical value of mobility function was analyzed using 1st July 2015 event and applying it to 2016 monsoon to validate the results. These rainfall thresholds presented can be improved with intense hourly rainfall and landslide inventory data. This paper describes the details of the model and its performance for the study area. This paper outlines a framework for risk assessment of landslides triggered by earthquakes and rainfall in urban buildings in the city of Medellín - Colombia, applying a model that uses a geographic information system (GIS). We applied a computer model that includes topographic, geological, geotechnical and hydrological features of the study area to assess landslide hazards using the Newmark's pseudo-static method, together with a probabilistic approach based on the first order and second moment method (FOSM). The physical vulnerability assessment of buildings was conducted using structural fragility indexes, as well as the definition of damage level of buildings via decision trees and using Medellin's cadastral inventory data. The probability of occurrence of a landslide was calculated assuming that an earthquake produces horizontal ground acceleration ( A h ) and considering the uncertainty of the geotechnical parameters and the soil saturation conditions of the ground. The probability of occurrence was multiplied by the structural fragility index values and by the replacement value of structures. The model implemented aims to quantify the risk caused by this kind of disaster in an area of the city of Medellín based on different values of A h and an analysis of the damage costs of this disaster to buildings under different scenarios and structural conditions. Currently, 62% of “Valle de Aburra” where the study area is located is under very low condition of landslide hazard and 38% is under low condition. If all buildings in the study area fulfilled the requirements of the Colombian building code, the costs of a landslide would be reduced 63% compared with the current condition. This article presents results of our 40-year research on dynamics of a deep rotational landslide developed in clay deposits. The landslide is located in a lowland, within the shoreline of Włocławek Reservoir, with little water level variation, in Dobrzyń on the Vistula (northern Poland). It is an old landslide, which was active also before the construction of the reservoir. Our research was initiated in 1970, i.e. when the river Vistula was dammed there. Currently the landslide covers about 20,000 m and has a volume of about 160,000 m. During the 40 years, 3 periods of increased landslide activity were observed. The first, conspicuously, nearly 40 % increase in the rate of movements within the Central Landslide was initiated in the early 1970s and lasted till the early 1980s. It coincided with the initial filling of the reservoir and the first years of exploitation of Włocławek Reservoir. The increase in landslide dynamics was a direct effect of hydrological and morphological changes associated with the damming of the river. The next 2 periods of increased landslide activity occurred: in 2001/2002 and 2010/2011. The latter was the most spectacular displacement within the Central Landslide. It was recorded between December 2010 and February 2011, and reached 10.0-19.4 m, after unusually long-lasting, heavy rainfall in the summer and autumn of 2010, followed by snowmelt and unfavourable changes in air temperature. This work focuses on the development of a combined statistical-mechanical approach to predict changes in landslide displacement rates from observed changes in rainfall amounts. The forecasting tool FLAME (Forecasting Landslides Accelerations induced by Meteorological Events) associates (1) a statistical impulse response (IR) model to simulate the changes in landslide rates by computing a transfer function between the input signal (e.g. rainfall) and the output signal (e.g. displacement) and (2) a simple 1D mechanical (MA) model (e.g. viscoplastic rheology) to take into account changes in pore water pressure. The models have been applied to forecast the displacement rates at the Super-Sauze landslide (South East France). The performance of different combinations of models (IR model alone, MA model alone and a combination of the IR and MA models) is evaluated against observed changes in pore water pressures and displacement rates at the study site. Results indicate that the three models are able to reproduce the displacement pattern in the general kinematic regime (succession of acceleration and deceleration phases); conversely, extreme kinematic regimes such as fluidization of part of the landslide mass are not being reproduced. In Italy, rainfall-induced landslides are recurrent phenomena that cause societal and economic damage. Thus, assessing the rainfall conditions responsible for landslides is important and may contribute to reducing risk. The prediction of rainfall-induced landslides relies primarily on empirical rainfall thresholds. However, the thresholds are affected by uncertainties that limit their use in operational warning systems. A source of uncertainty lies in the characterization of the rainfall events responsible for landslides. Objective criteria for the definition of rainfall events are lacking. To overcome the problem, we propose an algorithm that reconstructs the rainfall events, identifies the rainfall conditions that have resulted in landslides, and measures the duration and the cumulated rainfall for the events. The algorithm is independent from the local settings and uses a reduced set of parameters to account for different physical settings and operational conditions. We tested the algorithm in Sicily, Italy, with rainfall and landslide information between January 2002 and December 2012. The rainfall conditions responsible for landslides identified by the algorithm were compared against results obtained manually. The algorithm was proven capable of accurately reconstructing most (87.7 %) of the rainfall events. For each landslide, the algorithm identified a variable number of rainfall conditions responsible for the failures, which are equally likely triggers of the landslide. This opens the possibility of evaluating the uncertainty introduced by different criteria to determine the rainfall events responsible for landslides. Use of the algorithm shall contribute to reducing the uncertainty in the definition of landslide-triggering rainfall events, to compiling large catalogues of rainfall events with landslides and to determining reliable rainfall thresholds for possible landslide occurrence. On October 25, 2011, an extreme rainfall event affected a wide area along the coasts of Cinque Terre (eastern Liguria, northern Italy). Particularly, in the Vernazza catchment, the event triggered hundreds of shallow landslides and a debris flood that caused three casualties. Investigation of the slope stability after the event was carried out aiming at defining the most effective mitigation measures which may be adopted in future land use planning. To this objective, a susceptibility model was produced and a series of scenarios were simulated using probabilistic methods. The susceptibility model has provided information about landslide conditioning factors on which to act for reducing landslide occurrence and therefore the associated risk. The simulations have taken into consideration the following alternative types of mitigation measures: (1) restoration of abandoned terraces, (2) reforestation of abandoned terraces, (3) use of local structural measures over stretches of potentially unstable hillsides and (4) avoidance of any intervention. The advantages and the disadvantages of the proposed mitigation measures for shallow landslide risk are discussed considering the results of the simulations and taking into account their complex interaction with environmental, historical, cultural and socio-economic aspects. The results show that the most effective mitigation strategy for reducing landslide risk at short term consists of applying structural measures over potentially unstable slopes. However, a long-term programme promoting the development of agricultural or forestry practices on terraced slopes is necessary. In fact, the simulations indicate that if no measures are applied to avoid the degradation of the terraced areas, landslide areal frequency would inevitably increase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main aim of this paper is to test economic benefits of landslide prevention measures vs. post-event emergency actions. To this end, small and large scale analyses were performed in a training area located in the North-Eastern Italian pre-Alps that was hit by an exceptional rainfall event occurred in November 2010. At the small-scale, landslide susceptibility was initially assessed using a simple probabilistic analysis, which allowed to highlight the main landslide conditioning factors and the most hazardous areas. However, this approach revealed to be quite insufficient to reach planned goals, so a large-scale case-by-case analysis was performed: a study case was defined, accord ing to landslide occurrence frequency and assessment of elements at risk. Numerical modeling demonstrated that remedial works carried out after the landslide - waterremoval intervention such as a drainage trench - could have improved slope stability if applied before its occurrence. Then, a cost-benefit analysis was finally employed. It defined that prevention would have been economically convenient compared to a non preventive and passive attitude, allowing a 30%saving relative to total costs. Therefore, this kind of approach could be actually used as a mean toward preventive soil protection not only within the investigated case study, but also in all those hazardous areas where preventive measures are needed. The wired and wireless monitoring system installed in the Rebaixader catchment detected six debris flows and 11 debris floods between 2009 and 2012. Apart from results directly related to the processes, many experiences associated with monitoring were collected. Debris flows and debris floods showed clear differences in both the recorded data and field observations. The distinction was especially visible in the stage measurements and the ground vibration registered by the most downstream geophone. At this geophone, a positive relation between the maximum ground vibration and the volume was also observed. The triggering of most events was associated with short, high-intensity rainstorms in summer, but some were also generated in spring, when the melting of snow cover and frozen soil played an additional role. A positive correlation between the volume and both the amount and the intensity of the triggering rainfall was observed. Regarding technical aspects, a switch between a 'no-event' mode with a low sample rate and an 'event' mode with a fast sampling was particularly useful at the station that register the passing of a flow. In addition, the stations, which most recently were installed at Rebaixader, apply wireless devices because wireless techniques include multiple advantages against standard wired systems. Although recorded data or even video images provide detailed information on the debris-flow behavior, we strongly recommend periodic field surveys along the entire torrent to verify and improve the interpretation obtained from the monitoring system. Rainfall induced landslides vary in depth and the deeper the landslide, the greater the damage it causes. This paper investigates, quantitatively, the risk of rainfall induced landslides by assessing the consequence of each failure. The influence of the spatial variability of the saturated hydraulic conductivity and the nature of triggering mechanisms on the risk of rainfall-induced landslides (for an infinite slope) are studied. It is shown that a critical spatial correlation length exists at which the risk is a maximum and the risk is higher when the failure occurs due to a generation of positive pore water pressure. This paper analyses the dominant mechanisms of slope failures and identifies potential obstacles to landslide-hazard reduction at the Iva Valley area, Enugu, Nigeria. The landscape is replete with landslide scars and gullies of varied sizes and the slope deposits comprise unconsolidated, friable sands inter-bedded with thin units of montmorillonitic claystone. Forty-three landslide events were identified in the study area with most being shallow, short run-out movements with slip-surface depth <2 m. The study found the landslides mainly occur in the beginning of rainy season characterized by short duration, high intensity rainfall. An integrated approach comprising field mapping, laboratory tests and numerical analyses reveals that the barren nature of the slopes prior to the outset of rainy season, high rainfall intensity, erosion, overgrazing, soil characteristics and the site's unique lithologic sequence are the main causes of instability. Shearing tests under several conditions showed that the soils strongly strain-soften until low steady-state strength is achieved. A computer code, based on this strength reduction technique, used input parameters obtained from the field and laboratory studies to simulate a landslide with similar structure, travel distance and distribution area. It is noted that urbanization has gradually increased the vulnerability of the society's poor to landslide hazards as they now erect unplanned residence (tents and blocks) on the slopes. Precipitation infiltration is one of the most significant triggering factors for slope failure occurrence in many places around the world. Knowledge of the mechanisms leading to precipitation-induced slope failures is of great importance to the management of landslide hazard. In this study, a soil water balance model is developed to estimate soil water flux during the process of infiltration from rainfall data, with consideration of storm periods and non-storm periods. Two important assumptions in this study are given: (1) instantaneous uniform distribution of the degree of saturation and (2) a linear relationship between evapotranspiration and the related degree of saturation. For storm periods, the Brooks and Corey model estimates both the soil water retention curve and soil water parameters. The infiltration partition is employed by an infinite-series solution of Philip in conjunction with the time compression approximation. For none-storm periods, evapotranspiration can be derived for the moisture depletion of soil water. This study presents a procedure for calculating the safety factor for an unsaturated slope suffering from precipitation infiltration. The process of infiltration into a slope due to rainfall and its effect on soil slope behavior are examined using modified Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion in conjunction with a soil water balance model. This paper concerns a regional scale warning system for landslides that relies on a decisional algorithm based on the comparison between rainfall recordings and statistically defined thresholds. The latter were based on the total amount of rainfall, which was cumulated considering different time intervals: 1-, 2- and 3-day cumulates took into account the critical rainfall influencing shallow movements, whilst a variable time interval cumulate (up to 240 days) was used to consider the triggering of deep-seated landslides in low permeability terrains. A prototypal version of the model was initially set up to define statistical thresholds. Then, thresholds were calibrated using a database of past georegistered and dated landslides. A validation procedure showed that the calibration highly improves the results and therefore the model was integrated in the regional warning system of Emilia Romagna (Italy) for civil protection purposes. The definition of hydrological alert systems for rainfall-induced landslides is strongly related to a deep knowledge of the geological and geomorphological features of the territory. Climatic conditions, spatial and temporal evolution of the phenomena and characterization of landslide triggering, together with propagation mechanisms, are the key elements to be considered. Critical steps for the development of the systems consist of the identification of the hydrological variable related to landslide triggering and of the minimum rainfall threshold for landslide occurrence. In this paper we report the results from a process-based model to define a hydrological alert system for the Val di Maso Landslide, located in the northeastern Italian Alps and included in the Vicenza Province (Veneto region, NE Italy). The instability occurred in November 2010, due to an exceptional rainfall event that hit the Vicenza Province and the entire NE Italy. Up to 500mm in 3-day cumulated rainfall generated large flood conditions and triggered hundreds of landslides. During the flood, the Soil Protection Division of the Vicenza Province received more than 500 warnings of instability phenomena. The complexity of the event and the high level of risk to infrastructure and private buildings are the main reasons for deepening the specific phenomenon occurred at Val di Maso. Empirical and physically-based models have been used to identify the minimum rainfall threshold for the occurrence of instability phenomena in the crown area of Val di Maso landslide, where a retrogressive evolution by multiple rotational slides is expected. Empirical models helped in the identifi- cation and in the evaluation of recurrence of critical rainfall events, while physically-based modelling was essential to verify the effects on the slope stability of determined rainfall depths. Empirical relationships between rainfall and landslide consist of the calculation of rainfall Depth-Duration- Frequency (DDF) curves, which allow one to determine rainfall depth (or intensity) as a function of duration for given return periods or probabilities of exceedance (frequencies). Physically-based modelling was performed through coupled seepage and slope stability analyses. Combining results from empirical and physically-based modelling, the minimum alert threshold for a reactivation of the phenomenon was found in rainfall cumulated up to 60 days with a return period of 2 yr. These results were used to set up a hydrological alert system based on the calibration of DDF curves which can be used as a sort of abacus to plot in real time rainfall depths and to set increasing levels of alert on the basis of the degree of exceptionality of rainfall. The alert system for Val di Maso was successfully tested by the rainfall events that produced displacements which have been recorded by extensometers placed in the crown area after the November 2010 landslide. However, further tests are recommendable to improve the process-based model that led to the implementation of the alert system. To this end, a monitoring system is currently being realized. In the near future, monitoring data will help in testing and improving landslide evolution and alert models. The proposed hydrological alert system proves to be effective mainly because it can be applied to different scales of investigation and geological and geomorphological contexts. In fact, it might also be applicable to territorial scale analyses, as showed by the brief example provided in this paper on how the alert system could be used for landslide early warning in the area surrounding Val di Maso. This paper proposes a Multidisciplinary Decision Support System (MDSS) as an approach to manage rainfallinduced shallow landslides of the flow type (flowslides) in pyroclastic deposits. We stress the need to combine information from the fields of meteorology, geology, hydrology, geotechnics and economics to support the agencies engaged in land monitoring and management. The MDSS consists of a "simulation chain" to link rainfall to effects in terms of infiltration, slope stability and vulnerability. This "simulation chain" was developed at the Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change (CMCC) (meteorological aspects), at the Geotechnical Laboratory of the Second University of Naples (hydrological and geotechnical aspects) and at the Department of Economics of the University of Naples "Federico II" (economic aspects). The results obtained from the application of this simulation chain in the Cervinara area during eleven years of research allowed in-depth analysis of the mechanisms underlying a flowslide in pyroclastic soil. A critical pluviometric event occurred in the central-eastern Ligurian Riviera, 15 km from Genoa, on 1 June 2007. This event caused landslides and hydraulic problems between Sori and Camogli and in the inland area of the Recco Valley. An analysis of the heavy rainfall was conducted. Hourly precipitation data revealed a critical event between 04:00 a.m. and 07:00 a.m. local time, with more than 220mm of precipitation over three hours. Slope movements were mainly debris flows that detached from the lateral valleys of the Recco Stream catchment and from well-maintained, wooded slopes that were also characterised by cultivated terraces. Numerous slide planes corresponded to the interface between the surface cover and the underlying bedrock, which presents an unfavourable geologic structure in terms of stability assessment. In most cases, the displaced material had a limited thickness. Debris cover was rapidly channelled along small valleys, which controlled the critical hydraulic conditions in the secondary drainage network. Man-made drainage systems were partially or totally blocked in a very short time and, like the natural watercourses, accumulated thick and extensive alluvial fans. Most of the instability phenomena occurred in areas that had been designated medium or low-risk areas during land planning, and in sectors that were defined as stable, because they lacked geomorphic indicators connected to landslide risks. The above considerations highlight some gaps of the Recco Stream Master Plan. Therefore, to update this land planning tool, it is necessary to extensively investigate local geomorphological characteristics and to adopt a different method for assigning weights to the geohazard maps. Landslides are the most established geological hazards in the frontal fold-thrust belt of Northwestern Himalaya comprising of Siwaliks and Murree strata. The continuous rainfall from 2 to 6 September, 2014 caused a massive landslide at village Sadal in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir state. The landslide occurred in the early morning of September 6, 2014, destroying entire Sadal habitation comprising 45 houses, and killing 41 people and more than 500 domestic animals. Google earth images of pre and post-landslide events along with the field measurements show the kinematics of upper and lower parts of the slide. Horizontal and vertical components of displacement and mode of failure suggest the landslide as of complex nature. The shallow subsurface geophysical imaging through Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey shows the failure plane composed of friable mudstone bed underlain by massive mudstone and overlain by cross-bedded sandstone. The depth of debris material above the failure plane ranges from 6 m at Site S1a-b to 10 m at Site-S2b and 20 m at Site S3a. The velocity analysis of Site-3 shows four thick layers represented from bottom to surface by L1—sandstone (V = 0.16 m/ns, travel time = 356.36 ns), L2—mudstone (V = 0.17 m/ns, travel time = 288.48 ns), L3—massive mudstone (V = 0.19 m/ns, travel time 220.68 ns), and L4—cross-laminated sandstone (V = 0.20 m/ns, travel time = 77.58 ns) overlaying the failure plane. The study shows the landslide occur along the western limb of a fold identified during the present work. We mapped an old landslide on the same limb which shows 5-6 m-thick subsurface debris material with thick rock fragments involved in the landslide process. Obtaining accurate spatial details of the parameters involved in landslides has been a major challenge in determining the risk of landslide following an extreme event of rainfall, earthquake, or a combination of both. In recent decades, advances in remote sensing with high resolution satellite imagery and digital elevation models have permitted very detailed mapping and analysis of landslide hazards; however, there has been little work verifying the reliability and precision of these techniques as compared to traditional field surveys. This paper seeks to improve this situation by assessing the feasibility of using remote sensing to determine landslide vulnerability. This has been carried out in two parts. Firstly, global positioning system (GPS) coordinates collected in the field after the September 30, 2009, Padang earthquake in Sumatra, Indonesia were compared to advanced spaceborne thermal emission and reflection radiometer (ASTER) and Google Earth digital elevation model (DEMs) and Satellite Pour L' Observation de la Terre (SPOT-5) satellite imagery. They showed reasonable spatial and elevation differences, which demonstrates the suitability of remote sensing for landslide hazard assessments. Secondly, results from a geographic information system (GIS) analysis carried out with these data showed that remote sensing is capable of producing practical landslide hazard maps that reflect an accurate measure of landslide risk during the 2009 Padang Earthquake. Inclusion of a water saturation contribution map in the conventional slope stability has proven able to better identify areas susceptible to landslides. Prior to the disaster, many of these landslide locations were demarcated as moderate risk regions in the local hazard map. Considering the high lethality of these events, this underestimate of the risk is a strong argument for a review of landslide risks using remote sensing to aid in assessing the combined effects of earthquake and rainfall on such landslides in this region.
