The study aimed to compare the quality of life (QoL) in two communities with different exposures to conflict and investigate the inter-relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social support, and QoL. This is a cross-sectional with 413 participants. Study instruments included the PTSD module of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI), the World Health Organization Quality of Life BREF (WHOQoL-BREF), and the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS). The family domain of social support was protective of both PTSD and QoL. Except for the relationship between community's location and the physical subscale of the QoL, a hierarchical regression analysis showed that all the independent variables were significantly associated with the QoL domains. Direct exposure to crises impaired QoL more than areas indirectly exposed. PTSD and the family domain of social support play a significant role in the QoL outcome. Objective: This study investigates patients' medication‐taking routines and the feasibility of harnessing habit formation through context cues and rewards to improve medication adherence. Methods: Semistructured qualitative interviews with patients with gout from an urban health care system were conducted to explore typical medication‐taking behavior, experiences using electronic pill bottles, barriers to adherence, existing context cues, and potential cues and rewards for habit‐forming behavior. Medication‐taking patterns were recorded for six weeks using electronic pill bottles before interviews to inform discussion. Transcribed interviews were analyzed to generate themes using codes developed by the study team, with representative quotations selected as illustrations. Results: We conducted interviews with 15 individuals (mean age 60.6 [SD 20.3] years, three women [20%], and nine White patients [60%]). Pill bottle–recorded adherence to urate‐lowering therapy (ULT) was high (mean 0.91 [SD 0.10]), and one patient was experiencing an active gout flare. Five key themes emerged: (1) reasons for nonadherence, (2) internal and external motivations for adherence, (3) structured routines around taking medications, (4) rewards for good medication adherence, and (5) the role of pill cap technology in medication‐taking. Conclusion: The importance of a predictable, structured routine in which participants could incorporate their medication‐taking behavior emerged as a key factor that promoted consistent adherence. Further, identifying context cues and reminders seemed to promote incorporation of medication‐taking into routines. Therefore, habit‐based interventions that use context cues to establish routines around medication‐taking may be a feasible strategy to improve adherence in patients with chronic conditions such as gout. A proof-of-concept study was conducted to explore the acceptability and potential benefits of a blended positive psychotherapy intervention for clients with residual depressive symptoms. A single-arm pilot study was conducted in 2022 and 2023 with 24 Dutch adults experiencing residual depressive symptoms after treatment. Clients who had recently received an evidence-based treatment for depressive disorder were approached to participate in this study through opportunity sampling. The intervention consisted of nine sessions with a therapist and a six-week self-guided digital positive psychology intervention. Acceptability was examined using semi-structured interviews (n = 15). Participants filled out questionnaires pre- (n = 21), mid- (n = 14) and post-intervention (n = 8). Potential benefits were assessed in terms of changes in mental well-being (MHC-SF), depression (PHQ-9) and personal recovery (QPR). Quantitative data and qualitative data were analysed using linear mixed-effects models and framework analysis, respectively. The analyses were primarily based on Sekhon's theoretical framework of acceptability. Linear mixed-effects analyses showed changes over time in most mental health indicators, including mental well-being (Hedge's g = 1.58), depression (g = 1.43) and personal recovery (g = 1.96). Most of the interviewed participants considered blended positive psychotherapy a valuable adjunctive treatment; it connected well with their wish to become more positive in their daily life without ignoring difficult experiences. For some participants, shifting towards a positive treatment approach was difficult, resulting in early dropout. This study's findings suggest that blended positive psychotherapy is acceptable to most people with residual depressive symptoms after treatment. Background: Depressive symptoms among nurses have been a significant public health concern. Although many studies have demonstrated the potential relationship between interpersonal conflict at work and depressive symptoms, the mechanisms underlying this relationship among nurses remain unclear. Based on the theoretical and empirical research, this study aimed to investigate the multiple mediating effects of negative emotion at work and meaning in life on the relationship between interpersonal conflict at work and depressive symptoms among nurses. Methods: An online multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted in 15 hospitals from different geographical areas of Hunan Province, China, from December 2021 to February 2022. A total of 1754 nurses completed validated self-reported questionnaires, including their sociodemographic information, interpersonal conflict at work, negative emotions at work, meaning in life, and depressive symptoms. Descriptive statistics analysis, Spearman's correlation analysis, multiple linear regression analysis, and chain mediation analysis were performed using IBM SPSS software (version 29) and Mplus software (version 8). Results: There were significant correlations between interpersonal conflict at work, negative emotions at work, meaning in life, and depressive symptoms (r = -0.206 ~ 0.518, all p < 0.01). Interpersonal conflict at work had a statistically significantly direct effect on depressive symptoms (β = 0.061; 95% confidence interval, CI: 0.011 ~ 0.126, p = 0.039). Analysis of mediating effects revealed that interpersonal conflict at work also influenced depressive symptoms through two statistically significantly indirect pathways: (a) the mediating effect of negative emotions at work (β = 0.167; 95% CI: 0.138 ~ 0.195, p < 0.001) and (b) the chain mediating effect between negative emotions at work and meaning in life (β = 0.008; 95% CI: 0.003 ~ 0.013, p = 0.005). Conclusion: Interpersonal conflict at work has a direct positive effect on depressive symptoms among nurses. Meanwhile, interpersonal conflict at work can influence depressive symptoms among nurses through the mediating effect of negative emotions at work and the chain mediating effect between negative emotions at work and meaning in life. Background: Teachers are recognized as 'key agents' for the delivery of physical activity programs and policies in schools. The aim of our study was to develop and evaluate a tool to assess teachers' capability, opportunity, and motivation to deliver school-based physical activity interventions. Methods: The development and evaluation of the Capability, Opportunity, and Motivation to deliver Physical Activity in School Scale (COM-PASS) involved three phases. In Phase 1, we invited academic experts to participate in a Delphi study to rate, provide recommendations, and achieve consensus on questionnaire items that were based on the Capability, Opportunity, and Motivation Behavior (COM-B) model. Each item was ranked on the degree to which it matched the content of the COM-B model, using a 5-point scale ranging from '1 = Poor match' to '5 = Excellent match'. In Phase 2, we interviewed primary and secondary school teachers using a 'think-aloud' approach to assess their understanding of the items. In Phase 3, teachers (n = 196) completed the COM-PASS to assess structural validity using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Results: Thirty-eight academic experts from 14 countries completed three rounds of the Delphi study. In the first round, items had an average rating score of 4.04, in the second round 4.51, and in the third (final) round 4.78. The final tool included 14 items, which related to the six constructs of the COM-B model: physical capability, psychological capability, physical opportunity, social opportunity, reflective motivation, and automatic motivation. In Phase 2, ten teachers shared their interpretation of COM-PASS via a 20-min interview, which resulted in minor changes. In Phase 3, CFA of the 3-factor model (i.e., capability, opportunity, and motivation) revealed an adequate fit to the data (χ2 = 122.6, p <.001, CFI =.945, TLI =.924, RMSEA =.066). The internal consistencies of the three subscale scores were acceptable (i.e., capability: α =.75, opportunity: α =.75, motivation: α =.81). Conclusion: COM-PASS is a valid and reliable tool for assessing teachers' capability, opportunity, and motivation to deliver physical activity interventions in schools. Background: Multimorbidity is common in elderly people, and one of the major consequences of multimorbidity is low health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of comorbid diseases in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and to analyze their relative importance in HRQoL. The aim was also to examine agreement between the generic 15D questionnaire and the PD-specific Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-8) to further validate 15D in the evaluation of HRQoL in patients with PD. Methods: Patients with PD (N = 551) filled a questionnaire on comorbid diseases, and the 15D questionnaire yielding a 15-dimensional health profile and a score representing the overall HRQoL. Self-organizing map was used for an unsupervised pattern recognition of the health profiles. Relative importance analysis was used to evaluate the contribution of 16 comorbid diseases to the 15D score. The agreement between 15D and PDQ-8 questionnaires was studied in a subset of 81 patients that were examined clinically. Results: 533 patients (96.7%) reported comorbid diseases. The most affected dimensions in the 15D questionnaire were secretion, usual activities, discomfort and symptoms, and sexual activity. Self-organizing map identified three patterns of health profiles that included patients with high, low or transition HRQoL. The transition subgroup was similar to low HRQoL subgroup in non-motor dimensions. Sixteen comorbid diseases explained 33.7% of the variance in the 15D score. Memory deficit, depression, heart failure, and atrial fibrillation had the highest relative importance. The intraclass correlation coefficient between the generic 15D and the PD-specific PDQ-8 was 0.642 suggesting moderate reliability. Conclusions: The most marked differences in HRQoL were in the dimensions of secretion, usual activities, and sexual activity. Pattern detection of 15D health dimensions enabled the detection of a subgroup with disproportionately poor HRQoL in non-motor dimensions. Introduction: There is growing consensus that consideration of the Social Determinants of Mental Health should be at the centre of mental health care provision. To facilitate this, a validated means to assess mental health service users' social contextual information is arguably needed. We therefore developed a questionnaire to assess the Social Determinants of Mental Health in clinical practice. Methods: Our guideline-informed development consisted of three steps; i) construct and purpose definition, ii) initial item generation based on the literature, similar questionnaires, and a selection of the ICD-10, iii) evaluation, revision, and content validation of the questionnaire. Initially we developed 249 items that were reduced, revised, and validated in several stages to 73 items. Content validation of the questionnaire was achieved through surveys and focus groups including mental health care service users and professionals. Results: The surveys and focus groups indicated the need for a standardised assessment of adverse social factors and highlighted that the benefits of such an assessment would be a more holistic approach to identifying and addressing fundamental factors involved in the development of mental health difficulties. Importantly, this study also revealed how any assessment of the Social Determinants of Mental Health must prioritise the assessed person having a central role in the process and control over their own data. The focus groups identified contradicting recommendations regarding the most suitable context to administer the questionnaire. Background & Objective: This research aimed to study the role of the meaning of life in death anxiety and suicidal thoughts in women with cancer. Materials & Methods: The method of this research is correlation. The statistical population of the study included all women with cancer referred to Tawheed Hospital in Sanandaj City in 1400-1401. The sample size consists of one hundred people selected by purposive sampling. To collect data, Steger's Meaning in Life (MLQ), Templer's Death (DAS), and Beck's Suicidal Thoughts (BSSI) questionnaires were used. SPSS software was used in this research. Results: The information was analyzed using correlation tests and regression analysis. The regression conclusions showed that the meaning of life has an inverse relationship with suicidal thoughts, and death anxiety has a direct relationship with suicidal thoughts. The Pearson correlation results showed that the meaning of life predicts death anxiety and suicidal thoughts. Conclusion: In general, it can be concluded that the meaning of life plays an instrumental role in the death anxiety and suicidal thoughts of women with cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context: Though previous research has focused on examining the effects of concussion history using a dual-task paradigm, the influence of factors like symptoms (unrelated to concussion), gender, and type of sport on gait in college athletes is unknown. Objective: To examine the effect of concussion history, symptoms, gender, and type of sport (noncontact/limited contact/contact) individually on gait among college athletes. Design: Exploratory cross-sectional study. Setting: Laboratory. Participants: In total, 98 varsity athletes (age, 18.3 [1.0] y; height, 1.79 [0.11] m; mass, 77.5 [19.2] kg; 27 with concussion history, 58 reported at least one symptom, 44 females; 8 played noncontact sports and 71 played contact sports) walked under single- and dual-task (walking while counting backward by 7) conditions. Interventions: Not applicable. Main Outcome Measures: Dual-task cost (DTC; % difference between single task and dual task) of gait speed, cadence, step length and width, percentage of swing and double-support phases, symptom score, and total symptom severity score. Independent samples t tests and 1-way analysis of variance were conducted (α value =.05). Results: Self-reported concussion history resulted in no significant differences (P >.05). Those who reported symptoms at testing time showed significantly greater DTC of step length (mean difference [MD], 2.7%; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.3% to 5.1%; P =.012), % of swing phase (MD, 1.0%; 95% CI, −0.2 to 2.1%; P =.042), and % of double-support phase (MD, 3.9%; 95% CI, 0.2% to 7.8%; P =.019). Females demonstrated significantly higher DTC of gait speed (MD, 5.3%; 95% CI, 1.3% to 9.3%; P =.005), cadence (MD, 4.0%; 95% CI, 1.4% to 6.5%; P =.002), % of swing phase (MD, 1.2%; 95% CI, 0.1% to 2.3%; P =.019), and % of double-support phase (MD, 4.1%; 95% CI, 0.4% to 7.9%; P =.018). Noncontact sports athletes had significantly greater step width DTC than contact sports athletes (MD, 14.2%; 95% CI, 0.9% to 27.6%; P =.032). Conclusions: Reporting symptoms at testing time may influence gait under dual-task conditions. Additionally, female athletes showed more gait changes during a dual task. Background: Exercise therapy is considered effective for the treatment of motor impairment in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). During the COVID-19 pandemic, training sessions were cancelled and the implementation of telerehabilitation concepts became a promising solution. The aim of this controlled interventional feasibility study was to evaluate the long-term acceptance and to explore initial effectiveness of a digital, home-based, high-frequency exercise program for PD patients. Training effects were assessed using patient-reported outcome measures combined with sensor-based and clinical scores. Methods: 16 PD patients (smartphone group, SG) completed a home-based, individualized training program over 6–8 months using a smartphone app, remotely supervised by a therapist, and tailored to the patient's motor impairments and capacity. A control group (CG, n = 16) received medical treatment without participating in digital exercise training. The usability of the app was validated using System Usability Scale (SUS) and User Version of the Mobile Application Rating Scale (uMARS). Outcome measures included among others Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale, part III (UPDRS-III), sensor-based gait parameters derived from standardized gait tests, Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire (PDQ-39), and patient-defined motor activities of daily life (M-ADL). Results: Exercise frequency of 74.5% demonstrated high adherence in this cohort. The application obtained 84% in SUS and more than 3.5/5 points in each subcategory of uMARS, indicating excellent usability. The individually assessed additional benefit showed at least 6 out of 10 points (Mean = 8.2 ± 1.3). From a clinical perspective, patient-defined M-ADL improved for 10 out of 16 patients by 15.5% after the training period. The results of the UPDRS-III remained stable in the SG while worsening in the CG by 3.1 points (24%). The PDQ-39 score worsened over 6–8 months by 83% (SG) and 59% (CG) but the subsection mobility showed a smaller decline in the SG (3%) compared to the CG (77%) without reaching significance level for all outcomes. Sensor-based gait parameters remained constant in both groups. Conclusions: Long-term training over 6–8 months with the app is considered feasible and acceptable, representing a cost-effective, individualized approach to complement dopaminergic treatment. To summarize the effects of rehabilitation interventions to reduce freezing of gait (FOG) in people with Parkinson's disease. A systematic review with meta-analyses of randomized trials of rehabilitation interventions that reported a FOG outcome was conducted. Quality of included studies and certainty of FOG outcome were assessed using the PEDro scale and GRADE framework. Sixty-five studies were eligible, with 62 trialing physical therapy/exercise, and five trialing cognitive and/or behavioral therapies. All meta-analyses produced very low-certainty evidence. Physical therapy/exercise had a small effect on reducing FOG post-intervention compared to control (Hedges' g= −0.26, 95% CI= −0.38 to −0.14, 95% prediction interval (PI)= −0.38 to −0.14). We are uncertain of the effects on FOG post-intervention when comparing: exercise with cueing to without cueing (Hedges' g= −0.58, 95% CI= −0.86 to −0.29, 95% PI= −1.23 to 0.08); action observation training plus movement strategy practice to practice alone (Hedges' g= −0.56, 95% CI= −1.16 to 0.05); and dance to multimodal exercises (Hedges' g= −0.64, 95% CI= −1.53 to 0.25). We are uncertain if physical therapy/exercise, cognitive or behavioral therapies, are effective at reducing FOG. FOG leads to impaired mobility and falls, but the effect of rehabilitation interventions (including physical therapy/exercise and cognitive/behavioral therapies) on FOG is small and uncertain. Until more robust evidence is generated, clinicians should assess FOG using both self-report and physical measures, as well as other related impairments such as cognition, anxiety, and fear of falling. Interventions for FOG should be personalized based on the individual's triggers and form part of a broader exercise program addressing gait, balance, and falls prevention. Background and Objectives: Spiritual health, along with mental, physical, and emotional health, is one of the four dimensions of health, which can increase the level of adaptation of teachers to life events. The present study investigates the mediating role of meaning in life in relationships of responsibility and spiritual health with prospective personalities of competent teachers. Methods: This study used a structural equation model method, and the statistical population consisted of all competent teachers in Ahvaz City, Iran, in 2023. A total of 264 participants were selected via multi-stage cluster sampling. Prospective personality, responsibility, spiritual health, and meaning in life questionnaires were used to collect the data. The data were analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics, the Pearson correlation coefficient, and structural equation modeling. Results: Spiritual health had positive, significant relationships with prospective personality and meaning in life in competent teachers (P<0.01). Responsibility was significantly related to prospective personality and meaning in life (P<0.01). Furthermore, the relationship between meaning in life and perspective personality in teachers was significant (P<0.001). The indirect paths to perspective personality were found to become significant through meaning in life (P<0.01). Conclusion: The proposed model had a good fit and is a major step toward identifying factors affecting prospective personality in teachers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate sex differences in health and fitness outcomes among United States Military Academy (USMA) graduates (class years 1980-2011). Subjects (n = 701 men, 641 women, age: 45.7 ± 9.3 years) were surveyed as a part of a larger investigation on risk and resiliency factors among USMA graduates. Physical activity was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) short form and calculation of weekly metabolic equivalents (METs). Overweight and obesity status were assessed by body mass index (BMI). Significance for the study was set at p ≤ 0.05. Obesity rates for men (30.1%) were significantly higher than for women (16.6%). Men reported significantly higher (p = 0.01) vigorous METs·wk-1 (1,214.6 ± 1,171.6) than women (1,046.8 ± 1,133.2) despite significantly higher (p = 0.00) BMI values (28.75 ± 4.53 kg·m-2) than women (25.90 ± 5.48 kg·m-2). Women were 89% more likely to have ever been on a diet and reported higher (15.2%) Army Body Composition Program enrollment rates than men (6.3%). Obesity rates among men reflect trends seen in the broader military, Veteran, and U.S. adult populations, whereas obesity rates among women were lower. Men may be at a greater risk for obesity later in life despite higher self-reported physical activity; however, lean body mass and self-report bias should be considered. Because lifetime obesity may be influenced by factors other than physical activity, health initiatives should use a comprehensive approach early in the career of military officers. Objectives. Workplace safety problems are often catastrophic. There are both external and internal factors that influence employee safety performance. Strengthening internal factors is crucial to enhancing safety performance. Methods. Through a sense-making perspective, in the present study the impact of spiritual leadership on employees' career callings and safety performance was investigated, along with the moderating function of future work self-salience. A total of 339 paired leader–employee data were obtained. Results. Spiritual leadership significantly improved employee safety performance. Career callings served a mediating role between spiritual leadership and employee safety performance. The moderating effect of future work self-salience was significant. When future work self-salience was high, the influence of career callings on employees' safety performance was greater. Conclusion. The present results indicated that spiritual leadership sense-giving influences the development of employees' career sense and improves employees' safety performance in regard to spiritual motivation and pursuing career callings. Sling mobility training consists of passive and active exercises in slings suspended from the ceiling. We report the effects of music-based sling mobility training for patients with Parkinson's disease over a one-year follow-up period. Four participants with Parkinson's disease, aged 64 to 80 years participated in this study. All participants underwent music-based sling mobility training five times per week for one year. The outcome measures included the Part III of the unified Parkinson's disease rating scale (UPDRS-III), Berg balance scale, 10-meter walk test, 6-minute walk test (6MWT), modified Barthel index (MBI), and Parkinson's disease questionnaire-39 (PDQ-39). After six months of training, all four participants showed noticeably improved scores for all tests. Furthermore, gains were maintained after one year of training. These findings suggest that music-based sling mobility training might be helpful in enhancing physical performance, activities of daily living, and quality of life in individuals with Parkinson's disease. Freezing of gait (FOG) is a disabling phenomenon defined by the periodic absence or reduction of forward progression of the feet despite the intention to walk. We sought to understand whether Google Glass (GG), a lightweight wearable device that provides simultaneous visual-auditory cues, might improve FOG in parkinsonism. Patients with parkinsonism and FOG utilized GG custom-made auditory-visual cue applications: "Walk With Me" and "Unfreeze Me" in a single session intervention. We recorded ambulation time with and without GG under multiple conditions including 25 feet straight walk, dual task of performing serial 7's while straight walking, 180 degree turn after walking 25 feet, and walking through a doorway. FOG and patient experience questionnaires were administered. Using the GG "Walk With Me" program, improvements were noted in the following: average 25 feet straight walk by 0.32 s (SD 2.12); average dual task of serial 7's and 25 feet straight walk by 1.79 s (SD 2.91); and average walk through doorway by 0.59 s (SD 0.81). Average 180 degree turn after 25 feet walk worsened by 1.89 s (SD 10.66). Using the "Unfreeze Me" program, only the average dual task of serial 7's and 25 feet straight walk improved (better by 0.82 s (SD 3.08 sec). All other tasks had worse performance in terms of speed of completion. This feasibility study provides preliminary data suggesting that some walking tasks may improve with GG, which uses various musical dance programs to provide visual and auditory cueing for patients with FOG. Freezing of gait in parkinsonian syndromes is a disabling motor block described by patients as having their feet stuck to the floor leading to difficulty in initiation of gait and increased risk for falls. Wearable assistive devices such as Google Glass™ use visual and auditory cueing that may improve gait pattern in patients with freezing of gait. Augmented reality programs using wearable assistive devices are a home-based therapy, with the potential for reinforcing physical therapy techniques; this is especially meaningful during the COVID-19 pandemic when access to both medical and rehabilitative care has been curtailed. Freezing of gait (FoG) is a common target of rehabilitative interventions for people with Parkinson disease (PD). Virtual reality (VR) holds potential for advancing research and clinical management of FoG through flexible creation of FoG-provoking environments that are not easily or safely replicated in the clinic. The aim of this study was to investigate whether VR environments that replicate FoG-provoking situations would exacerbate gait impairments associated with FoG compared to unobstructed VR and physical laboratory environments. Gait characteristics (pace, rhythm, variability, asymmetry, and postural control domains) and festination were measured using motion capture while people with PD walked in VR environments based on FoG-provoking situations (doorway, hallway, and crowd environments) compared to unobstructed VR and physical laboratory environments. The effect of VR environments was assessed using one-way repeated measures ANOVAs with planned contrasts. Ten participants (mean age 74.1 years, 3 females, Hoehn and Yahr stage 2–3) with PD who self-reported FoG participated. Gait speed and step length were reduced in all VR environments compared to the physical laboratory. Step width was wider, step length was more variable, and festination was more common for some of the VR environments compared to the physical laboratory environment. Compared to the unobstructed virtual laboratory environment, step length was more variable in VR crowd and doorway environments. The exacerbation of gait impairments that are characteristic precursors of FoG in FoG-provoking VR environments supports the potential utility of VR technology in the assessment and treatment of gait impairments in PD. Background: Insulin resistance (IR), even in its subclinical state, is a significant risk factor for the onset and progression of coronary artery disease (CAD). IR is a multifactorial condition, and dietary composition is a factor associated with its development. Elevated advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in the body, secondary to highly processed food consumption, can impair glucose metabolism. The present study investigated whether a restricted AGE diet could affect insulin sensitivity and anthropometric indices reflecting visceral adipose tissue in nondiabetic CAD patients. Methods: This trial randomly allocated 42 angioplasty-treated patients to follow either low-AGE or control diets based on the AHA/NCEP guidelines for 12 weeks. Serum levels of total AGEs, insulin, HbA1c, and fasting blood sugar, as well as anthropometric measurements, were evaluated before and after the intervention. The Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR) and anthropometric indices were calculated according to the proposed formula. The patients' health status was assessed using the Seattle Angina Questionnaire (SAQ) at baseline and after the intervention. Results: Our study showed a significant reduction in anthropometric indices in the low-AGE group after 12 weeks. Insulin levels and IR decreased during the low-AGE diet. No significant changes were observed in the other serum biochemical markers. All SAQ domains significantly decreased in both groups, except for Treatment Satisfaction. Conclusion: A low-AGE diet for 12 weeks had beneficial effects on HOMA-IR and insulin levels in patients with CAD. The Posttrauma Risky Behaviors Questionnaire (PRBQ) was developed as a comprehensive, yet brief assessment of the extent of engaging in posttrauma reckless and self-destructive behaviors (RSDBs). Extending upon the initial psychometric investigation of the PRBQ, the current study details a preliminary investigation of measurement (non)-invariance across trauma types (i.e., interpersonal vs. non-interpersonal) and count (i.e., singular vs. multiple) in a sample of 1,174 trauma-exposed undergraduates. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the unidimensional measurement model in the overall sample and trauma subgroups. Further, the RSDB construct evaluated by the PRBQ demonstrated configural, metric (ΔCFI =.008), and scalar invariance (ΔCFI =.009) across subgroups indexing non-interpersonal versus interpersonal trauma, and configural, partial metric (ΔCFI =.009), and scalar invariance (ΔCFI =.009) across subgroups reporting singular versus multiple trauma types. Findings indicate equivalence of the PRBQ-assessed RSDB construct across subgroups differentiated by interpersonal vs. non-interpersonal trauma types, but not count of trauma types. Aims: To estimate the prevalence of family members affected by addictive disorders (FMA) with regard to various types of addictive disorders, and self‐rated health and depression in the general population. Design: Cross‐sectional general population survey. Setting: The German Health Update study (GEDA) 2014/2015, a nationally representative panel of German residents aged 15 years or older. Participants: A total of 24 824 residents aged 15 years or older. Measurements Participants were asked if they had a family member with current or past addictive disorder, the type of addiction and the relationship status. In addition, self‐rated health and depression were assessed using standardized questionnaires. Findings Of the respondents, 9.5% [95% confidence interval (CI) = 9.0–10.0] reported being affected by a current addictive disorder of a relative (cFMA), with a further 4.5% (95% CI = 4.2–4.9) reported having been affected by the addictive disorders of a relative in the past but not within the last 12 months (pFMA). Most FMAs reported having been affected by disorders due to alcohol, followed by cannabis and other drugs. Compared with life‐time non‐FMAs, FMAs reported significantly (P < 0.001) higher odds ratios for depression (cFM = 2.437; 95% CI = 2.082–2.853; pFMA = 1.850; 95% CI = 1.519–2.253) and ill‐health (cFMA = 1.574; 95% CI = 1.374–1.805; pFMA = 1.297; 95% CI = 1.082–1.555). Conclusions: In Germany, family members affected by addictive disorder are a substantial group within the general population. Background: Humans are ubiquitously exposed to air pollutants including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Although most studies of prenatal exposures have focused on psychopathology in childhood or adolescence, the effects of air pollutants on early emerging individual differences in reactivity and regulation are of growing concern. Our study is the first to report effects of prenatal exposure to PAH and maternal stress on infant reactivity and regulation. Methods: Participants included 153 infants (74 girls and 79 boys). Prenatal exposure to PAH was measured via personal air monitoring during the third trimester of pregnancy. Maternal perceived stress was measured via self‐report. We assessed infant orienting/regulation (OR), surgency (SE), and negative affectivity (NA) at 4 months using the Infant Behavior Questionnaire. We measured infant socioemotional outcomes at 12 months using the Brief Infant‐Toddler Social & Emotional Assessment Questionnaire. Results: Infants with higher prenatal PAH exposure and of mothers with higher stress had lower OR at 4 months, which predicted lower competence at 12 months. Infants with higher prenatal PAH exposure had lower SE at 4 months, which predicted more behavioral problems at 12 months. Prenatal exposure to PAH had no effects on infant NA at 4 months, although NA was associated with greater behavioral problems at 12 months. Conclusions: Infant reactivity and regulation, as early makers of child psychopathology, can facilitate timely and targeted screening and possibly prevention of disorders caused, in part, by environmental pollution. A multifaceted approach to improve environmental quality and reduce psychosocial stress is necessary to improve the developmental outcomes of children and most specially children from disadvantaged communities that disproportionately experience these environmental exposures. For decades predictors of alcohol use disorder (AUD) relapse have been studied, and around 40 different clinical and demographic relapse determinants have been identified. This paper aims to investigate the relationship of two of these AUD relapse factors, namely craving and meaning in life (MiL). We hypothesized that greater meaning in life would be associated with lower cravings and lower relapse rates. An AUD subsample of 81 patients within a clinical population that participated in ongoing exploratory research on religious/spiritual factors related to substance use disorders was followed up to 1 year. Craving (as measured with the Penn Alcohol Craving Scale) and meaning in life (as measured with the Meaning in Life Questionnaire- presence subscale) measures were assessed at baseline and relapse was assessed at 6- and 12-month follow up. Main effects and the interaction between craving and meaning in life in predicting alcohol relapse (with relapse defined as 'any alcohol use' and ≥ 3 consecutive days of drinking) were calculated/subject of analyses. We also investigated the relationship between relapse and alcohol dependence severity as measured with the Leeds Dependence Questionnaire. Baseline craving and dependence severity were related to relapse, but there were no associations between meaning in life and levels of craving or alcohol relapse. Introduction: This research aims to analyze the role of psychological capital in mediating the connection of the dark tetrad personality traits with creativity among artists. Materials and Methods: The statistical population of this descriptive-correlational study consisted all followers of the Telegram messenger channel of the Union of Artists of Khorasan Razavi province-Iran, in which 260 artists were studied. They were selected through the voluntary sampling method. Research instruments included the Torrance Creativity Questionnaire, McGee Psychological Capital Questionnaire, and Yousefi and Imanzad Scale of the personality dark tetrad traits, which provided reliable and valid findings. The research uses a path analysis plan. The data were analyzed using a descriptive and inferential statistics method, Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), SPSS software and the AMOS software. Results: The results demonstrated a significant inverse correlation between the dark tetrad personality traits and creativity mediated by psychological capital among artists. There is also a significant inverse correlation between artists' dark tetrad personality traits and creativity. Besides, there is a deep inverse correlation between the dark tetrad personality traits and the psychological capital of artists. There is also a direct relationship between psychological capital and creativity in artists. Conclusion: It seems that the artists with psychological capital have minor tetrad personality traits and delay immediate impulsive gratification. Background: Many pregnant and postpartum Veterans have experienced multiple lifetime traumas, including military sexual trauma, intimate partner violence, and combat trauma. These women may be particularly vulnerable to increased post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health problems following additional trauma exposures or stressful events, such as Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study sought to examine the impact of prior trauma exposures on the lived experience of pregnant and postpartum Veterans during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and Methods: Pregnant Veterans at 15 VA medical centers were surveyed at 20 weeks of pregnancy and 3 months postpartum asked about their COVID-19-related perinatal and mental health experiences, as well as the stressors that impacted them as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Results: Overall, 111 women Veterans completed both the pregnancy and postpartum surveys that included COVID-19 items. Sixty percent of our sample had experienced at least one potentially traumatic lifetime event, with 22% of our sample experiencing two or more of the included exposures. Women with a trauma history had 3.5 times increased odds of reporting their mental health as "much worse" compared to before the COVID-19 pandemic (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.06–11.75) and were more likely to report that COVID-19 negatively affected their mental or emotional health "a lot" compared with women without a trauma history (odds ratio: 8.5; 95% CI: 1.93–37.48). Conclusions: COVID-19 has had a significant impact on pregnant and postpartum Veterans' mental health. Obstetricians should consider strategies to ensure women have access to mental health care during pregnancy, especially as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. Hospitals should also consider the importance of labor support companions during the COVID-19 pandemic and examine adjusting policies to allow for at least one labor support companion during labor and delivery. Objective: To assess the effectiveness of Wii sports-based strategy training on risk of falling, falls and quality of life in adults with idiopathic Parkinson's disease. Design: Single blind, Randomised comparative trial. Setting: Hospital and home Subjects: Diagnosed as idiopathic Parkinson's disease, Hoehn-Yahr stage 2.5 to 4, history of at least 3 falls in the last 3 months. Intervention: Experimental group participated in 30–40 min of Wii training, 3 session/week for 12 weeks and control group participated for the same duration in traditional balance training. During each session both the group received 30 min of conventional physiotherapy. Outcomes: Number of fallers, Fall rate, Berg balance scale, Timed up and go test, Parkinson's disease questionnaire 39, at baseline, 12th and 36th week after baseline. Results: We randomised 192 participants. Participant's characteristics were similar between Wii and control group at base line, in age 69.7 ± 10, 68.5 ± 9.8, disease severity 3.43 ± 0.56, 3.42 ± 0.59, and fall rate 10.47 ± 15.78, 11.80 ± 18.95 (in mean ± SD). At 12th week 28%(27), 51%(49) & 36th week 45%(42), 60%(57) in Wii-group, control group fell at least once, respectively. Wii group improved more than control group at 12th, 36th week in number of fallers (−23%, p < 0.001) (−15%, p < 0.039), fall rates −2.635(−5.38 to 0.112), −1.476(−5.09 to 2.142) (difference in mean, Confidence Interval) and bodily discomfort component of PDQ 39. Conclusion: A 12 weeks exercise training using the Wii sports-based strategy decreases the number of fallers, fall rate, measures of risk of falling but did not alter the quality of life in adults with idiopathic Parkinson's disease. To describe the effects of a contemporary dance program, combined with conventional physiotherapy, on postural control, satisfaction and adherence in mild-moderate Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. A withdrawal/reversion test with three intervention periods. Each period lasts for two months: physiotherapy, physiotherapy + dance and withdrawing dance and continuing with the physiotherapy sessions. Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed Up & Go test (TUG), Sensory Organization Test (SOT), Motor Control Test (MCT) and Rhythmic Weigh Shift (RWS) were assessed at T1 (baseline), T2 (post-physiotherapy treatment), T3 (post-physiotherapy and dance) and T4 (post-physiotherapy). A satisfaction questionnaire and adherence were registered. 27 patients (67.32 ± 6.14 yrs) completed the study. Statistical analysis revealed differences between T2-T3 (p = 0.027), T2-T4 (p = 0.029), T1-T3 (p = 0.010) and T1-T4 (p = 0.008) for BBS; and between T1-T2 (p = 0.037), T1-T3 (p = 0.005), T1-T4 (p = 0.004), T2-T3 (p = 0.022) and T2-T4 (p = 0.041) for TUG. Significant differences for CES (p < 0.001), VEST (p = 0.024) and strategy (p = 0.011) were observed, but not for MCT. Lateromedial velocity (p = 0.003) and anteroposterior velocity (p < 0.001) were significant for RWT. Patients showed a high level of satisfaction and adherence. A short 8-weeks contemporary dance program plus combined physiotherapy shows benefits in functional mobility and balance, with a high degree of satisfaction and adherence in PD. Contemporary dance, combined with physiotherapy, is a useful therapeutic tool to treat balance disorders and postural control in people with PD. Religiosity is widespread in Africa and permeates the life of the continent's young adults in ways yet to be fully understood. It is unclear what meanings young Africans perceive with their religiosity or the pathways to experiencing meaning. Therefore, we investigated the role of religious commitment in the search for and experience of meaning among young people in Ghana. In a cross-sectional design study, 342 Ghanaian students (female = 67%; mean age = 21 years, SD = 3.25) completed the Religious Commitment Inventory and the Meaning in Life Questionnaire. Structural equation modelling (SEM) in Mplus was used to test direct and interaction effects to demonstrate the dynamic relationships among religious commitment, and the search for and the presence of meaning. While results indicated a positive association between religious commitment and presence of meaning, the search for meaning was unrelated to religious commitment or presence of meaning. The interaction between search for meaning and religious commitment did not result in a significant effect on presence of meaning. These findings suggest that in this Ghanaian sample, religious commitment played a role in determining meaningful life experience, but the search for meaning did not play a role in the experience of meaning. Gait impairments have been documented following sport-related concussion. Whether preexisting gait pattern differences exist among athletes who participate in different sport classifications, however, remains unclear. Dual-task gait examinations probe the simultaneous performance of everyday tasks (ie, walking and thinking), and can quantify gait performance using inertial sensors. The purpose of this study was to compare the single-task and dual-task gait performance of collision/contact and noncontact athletes. A group of collegiate athletes (n = 265) were tested before their season at 3 institutions (mean age= 19.1 ± 1.1 years). All participants stood still (single-task standing) and walked while simultaneously completing a cognitive test (dual-task gait), and completed walking trials without the cognitive test (single-task gait). Spatial-temporal gait parameters were compared between collision/contact and noncontact athletes using MANCOVAs; cognitive task performance was compared using ANCOVAs. No significant single-task or dual-task gait differences were found between collision/contact and noncontact athletes. Noncontact athletes demonstrated higher cognitive task accuracy during single-task standing (P = .001) and dual-task gait conditions (P = .02) than collision/contact athletes. These data demonstrate the utility of a dual-task gait assessment outside of a laboratory and suggest that preinjury cognitive task performance during dual-tasks may differ between athletes of different sport classifications. To describe associations of demographic, military, and health comorbidity variables between mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) history and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) status in a sample of Former and current military personnel. Participants recruited and tested at seven VA sites and one military training facility in the LIMBIC-CENC prospective longitudinal study (PLS), which examines the long-term mental health, neurologic, and cognitive outcomes among previously combat-deployed U.S. Service Members and Veterans (SM/Vs). A total of 1,540 SM/Vs with a history of combat exposure. Data were collected between 1/1/2015 through 3/31/2019. Cross-sectional analysis using data collected at enrollment into the longitudinal study cohort examining demographic, military, and health comorbidity variables across PTSD and mTBI subgroups. PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5), mTBI diagnostic status, Patient Health Questionnaire 9-item (PHQ-9), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), AUDIT-C, and other self-reported demographic, military, and health comorbidity variables. Ten years following an index date of mTBI exposure or mid-point of military deployment, combat-exposed SM/Vs with both mTBI history and PTSD had the highest rates of depression symptoms, pain, and sleep apnea risk relative to SM/Vs without both of these conditions. SM/Vs with PTSD, irrespective of mTBI history, had high rates of obesity, sleep problems, and pain. The long-term symptom reporting and health comorbidities among SM/Vs with mTBI history and PTSD suggest that ongoing monitoring and intervention is critical for addressing symptoms and improving quality of life. Background: Many benefits and some harms associated with psychedelic use could be attributable to these drugs' acceptance/avoidance-promoting effects and corresponding changes in psychological flexibility. Underlying psychological mechanisms are insufficiently understood.Aim: The purpose of this study was the validation of a psychological model of acceptance/avoidance-promoting psychedelic experiences, which included the development of a theory-based self-report instrument: the Acceptance/Avoidance-Promoting Experiences Questionnaire (APEQ). Its two main scales, acceptance-related experience (ACE) and avoidance-related experience (AVE), represent the theorized model's core constructs. We aimed to test the model's central assumptions of complementarity (ACE and AVE may occur alternatingly but not simultaneously, and are therefore empirically independent), intertwinedness (subaspects within ACE and AVE are mutually contingent and therefore highly inter-correlated), context-dependence (ACE and AVE depend on context factors) and interaction (longer-term outcomes depend on the interplay between ACE and AVE).Method: A bilingual retrospective online survey including 997 English- and 836 German-speaking participants. Each participant reported on one psychedelic experience occasioned by lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), psilocybin, mescaline, or ayahuasca.Results: Whereas ACE and AVE were found to be relatively independent aspects of participants' reported psychedelic experiences (complementarity), their subaspects were mostly distinguishable but strongly correlated among each other (intertwinedness). Therapeutic, escapist, and hedonic use motives were differentially associated with ACE and AVE (context-dependence), which were in turn associated with retrospective changes in psychological flexibility following participants' reported experiences. The positive association between ACE and increased psychological flexibility was significantly moderated by AVE (interaction).Conclusion: These results provide an initial validation of the APEQ and its underlying theoretical model, suggesting the two can help clarify the psychological mechanisms of psychedelic-induced benefits and harms. This paper presents the psychometric development of a new observer-report research questionnaire for assessing aspects of an individual's mindfulness that are noticeable to others. Items from five established self-report mindfulness scales were re-worded for observer-report, and 30 were endorsed for potential inclusion by an expert panel (n = 5). Factor analytic and item response theory models were used to test item and scale psychometrics with data (N = 494) in three independent samples. A nine-item, three-factor scale with good fit indices was determined (RMSEA = 0.04, CFI = 0.99, TLI = 0.99). The instrument provides an overall score for observed mindful behaviours and subscale scores for observed attentiveness, awareness and acceptance. Within-subject test–retest reliability was strong (ICC 0.91) and agreement between observed mindful behaviours and self-reported mindfulness was adequate (ICC 0.45). Validity tests showed concordance between the new scale and self-reported mindfulness within the selected nomological network constructs (emotional intelligence, empathy and avoidant behaviours). Responsiveness was indicated but unconfirmed in data from a randomized controlled trial of low-dose mindfulness training. The Observed Mindfulness Measure (OMM) is a quantitative instrument that can provide an additional data source to strengthen self-reported findings in mindfulness research. With some further refinement this new instrument can advance research into whether and how mindfulness training might make a noticeable difference in social and organizational domains. Aim: As the older adult population increases globally, it is important for local governments to measure their health and well‐being consistently to effectively support this group. Because definitions of subjective well‐being – such as happiness, life satisfaction and subjective health – overlap, it is worth considering which single‐item indicator local governments can rely on to measure individual well‐being. This study, therefore, explored the correlation between three single‐item questionnaires on happiness, life satisfaction and subjective health used in government surveys, and established psychometric scales of happiness, life satisfaction and quality of life, and analyzed which of the three single‐item indicators most effectively captured the target well‐being. Methods: Randomly selected people aged ≥65 years in urban and rural areas (n = 1440) answered the questions on the Happiness Scale, the Satisfaction with Life Scale and the Quality of Life scale, and the three single‐item questionnaires (happiness, life satisfaction and subjective health). We analyzed the data using correlation and multiple regression analyses. Results: The results showed a high positive correlation between the scales and the single‐item questionnaires. The single‐item life satisfaction and subjective health questionnaires were significantly correlated with all the three scales. Although there was not much difference in the adjusted R2 values between putting three items jointly and separately, the value of single‐item life satisfaction was the best and the subjective health was the second best. Conclusion: The results showed that the single‐item life satisfaction and subjective health effectively captured the target well‐being; these could be the appropriate indicators for a potential optimal index. Prior research suggests that rejection sensitive individuals may find it easier to express their true selves in an online environment. The purpose of the present study was to examine the extent to which rejection sensitivity (RS) and true self influence self-disclosure within the context of online dating. We collected data from a total of 1,295 individuals who completed an online survey. For those who engaged in online dating, RS was not directly related to self-disclosure in online dating profiles or in communicating with individuals met through online dating sites/apps, but true self was. In addition, there was an indirect relationship between RS and self-disclosure in the context of online dating through true self. These findings suggest that rejection sensitive individuals who feel more comfortable revealing aspects of their "true" selves online may be more likely to engage in self-disclosure within the context of online dating, which could potentially offer some clue as to why rejection sensitive individuals may be somewhat more likely to engage in online dating than less rejection sensitive individuals. That is, rejection sensitive individuals are perhaps more likely to engage in online dating because it may facilitate representation of their "true" selves and may thus increase dating success. Background: Parkinson's Disease (PD) and sarcopenia share a number of common pathways, and they can potentially affect each other. Objective: We aimed to investigate the relationship between dysphagia and sarcopenia in elderly patients with PD compared to healthy controls. Methods: This case-control study was conducted on 54 elderly PD patients and age-, sex- and body mass index-matched 54 healthy elder persons. Demographic and disease characteristics such as disease duration, stage of disease and Unified Parkinson's disease rating scale were recorded. All subjects were assessed by 10- item Eating Assessment Tool, Gugging Swallowing Screen tests and flexible fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) as well as Mini nutritional test short form. Also, A simplified screening tool for assessing sarcopenia (SARC-F), five times sit-to-stand and gait speed tests as well as lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) cross-sectional area of psoas and paraspinal muscles were used for evaluation of sarcopenia. Patients were divided as «with normal swallowing» or «with dysphagia» according to the FEES results. Three groups were compared among themselves in terms of evaluation methods. Results: Sarcopenia evaluation parameters were significantly higher in patient groups compared to the control group. Moreover, muscle measurements evaluated by MRI in patients with dysphagia are lower than both patients with normal swallowing and control group (p value between 0.001 and 0.011). Conclusions: Patients with PD have lower muscle mass compared to healthy controls, and the situation is more pronounced in dysphagic PD patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: This paper is focused on two indicators which may be considered as proxies of individuals' well-being: self-assessed health and burnout intensity. There is little research relating these concepts with the type of the primary healthcare setting, its urbanization density and the region. The aims of this work are threefold: (i) to find determinant factors of individual health status and burnout, (ii) to find possible differences across different types of health care units, differently urbanized areas, and different administrative regions, and (iii) to verify if there are differences in between GPs and nurses. Methods: Data was gathered from an online questionnaire implemented on primary health care. A sample of 9,094 professionals from all 1,212 primary health care settings in Portugal mainland was obtained from an online questionnaire filled from January and April 2018. Statistical analyses include the estimation of two ordered probits, one explaining self-assessed health and the other the burnout. Results: The individual drivers for good health and lower levels of burnout, that is, better well-being, are estimated for GPs and nurses. Main findings support that, first, nurses report worst health than GPs, but the latter tend to suffer higher levels of burnout, and also that, 'place' effects arising from the health unit settings and regional location are more significant in GPs than in nurses. However, urbanization density is not significantly associated with health or burnout. Conclusions: A set of policy recommendations are suggested to improve the healthcare workforce well-being, such as improving job satisfaction and income. Objectives: To assess the feasibility of a multi-site randomised controlled trial to evaluate the effect of functional electrical stimulation on bradykinesia in people with Parkinson's disease. Design: A two-arm assessor blinded randomised controlled trial with an 18 weeks intervention period and 4 weeks post-intervention follow-up. Setting: Two UK hospitals; a therapy outpatient department in a district general hospital and a specialist neuroscience centre. Participants: A total of 64 participants with idiopathic Parkinson's disease and slow gait <1.25 ms−1. Interventions: Functional electrical stimulation delivered to the common peroneal nerve while walking in addition to standard care compared with standard care alone. Main measures: Feasibility aims included the determination of sample size, recruitment and retention rates, acceptability of the protocol and confirmation of the primary outcome measure. The outcome measures were 10 m walking speed, Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), Mini Balance Evaluation Systems Test, Parkinson's Disease Questionnaire-39, EuroQol 5-dimension 5-level, New Freezing of Gait questionnaire, Falls Efficacy Score International and falls diary. Participants opinion on the study design and relevance of outcome measures were evaluated using an embedded qualitative study. Results: There was a mean difference between groups of 0.14 ms−1 (CI 0.03, 0.26) at week 18 in favour of the treatment group, which was maintained at week 22, 0.10 ms−1 (CI –0.05, 0.25). There was a mean difference in UPDRS motor examination score of –3.65 (CI –4.35, 0.54) at week 18 which was lost at week 22 –0.91 (CI –2.19, 2.26). Conclusion: The study design and intervention were feasible and supportive for a definitive trial. Purpose: This study sought to investigate the effects of role conflict, role ambiguity, and workload on burnout syndrome among clinical nurses working in university hospitals and the mediating role of work‐related stress in these effects. Design and Methods: Cross‐sectional questionnaire‐based survey was conducted. Data from 386 nurses were evaluated. The research variables were analyzed using statistical methods such as factor analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis, Sobel tests, and bootstrapping method. Findings: It was determined that role conflict, role ambiguity, workload, and work‐related stress affect nurses' burnout significantly and work‐related stress has a mediator role between burnout and the independent variables. Practice Implications: Nurses' burnout syndrome can be prevented if managerial practices to reduce the sources of role‐related stressors and work‐related stress are implemented by managers. Objective: To understand whether symptoms of health conditions explain the negative association between combat exposure and student Veterans' achievement of a meaningful life. Participants: 153 combat Veterans enrolled in college between November 2013 and April 2018. Methods: Through an online survey, participants reported combat exposure, health status (symptoms of conditions such as depression), and aspects of a meaningful life (belonging, self-understanding, and doing) at two time points. Path analysis was used to explore whether baseline health status mediated the relationship between combat exposure and belonging, self-understanding, and doing at follow-up. Results: Indirect effects indicated that the negative influence of combat on student Veterans' sense of belonging, self-understanding, and doing at follow-up was mediated by poor health at baseline. Conclusions: Combat exposure may contribute to the development of health conditions, which in turn limit student Veterans' experience of three aspects of a meaningful life: a sense of belonging, self-understanding, and doing. The purpose of this study is to systematically investigate the individual-differences factors related to time awareness in everyday life. Three hundred and nine individuals in China, from 14- to 75-year old, were sampled to complete a questionnaire that consists of instruments measuring time awareness, meaning in life, achievement motivation, affective state and perceived remaining lifetime. The results showed that meaning in life positively predicted present passage-of-time judgment but not retrospective passage-of-time judgment. Meaning in life mediated the effects of achievement motivation and affective state on present passage-of-time judgment. Moreover, perceived remaining lifetime played a role in the associations by moderating the effect of achievement motivation on meaning in life. The findings aligned with socioemotional selectivity theory, which explains that people shift from knowledge-related goals to emotion-related goals as the end of life becomes imminent. The primary aim is to verify the effectiveness of an aquatic training (AT) in inpatients with severe Traumatic Brain Injury (sTBI) on balance. The secondary aims are to explore the effects on gait, activities of daily living, and quality of life, comparing to a land-based conventional protocol. Two-arm, randomized controlled trial. Twenty inpatients with sTBI, Glasgow Coma Scale score ≤8, and Level of Cognitive Functioning ≥7 were recruited and randomly assigned to the aquatic therapy group (ATG) or to the Conventional Training Group (CTG). Patients underwent 12 individual rehabilitation sessions (3 days/week, 4 weeks), in a rehabilitation pool during the post-acute intensive neurorehabilitation. The primary outcome measure was the Berg Balance Scale (BBS). Secondary outcome measures were the Modified Barthel Index (MBI), Disability Rating Scale (DRS), Tinetti Gait Balance Scale (TBG) and Quality of Life After Brain Injury (QOLIBRI). All the evaluations were performed at the baseline and after 4 weeks of training. The within-subjects analysis showed a significant improvement both in ATG and CTG in MBI, BBS, TBG, and QOLIBRI. Objective: To explore the effects of an eight-week core stability program on balance ability in persons with Parkinson's disease. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Setting: A local Parkinson's association. Subjects: A total of 44 participants with a clinical diagnosis of Parkinson's disease were randomly assigned to an experimental (n = 22) or control group (n = 22). Intervention: The experimental group received 24 sessions of core training, while the control group received an intervention including active joint mobilization, muscle stretching, and motor coordination exercises. Main measures: The primary outcome measure was dynamic balance evaluated using the Mini-Balance Evaluation Systems Test. Secondary outcomes included the balance confidence assessed with the Activities-specific Balance Confidence Scale and standing balance assessed by the maximal excursion of center of pressure during the Modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction on Balance and the Limits of Stability test. Results: After treatment, a significant between-group improvement in dynamic balance was observed in the experimental group compared to the control group (change, 2.75 ± 1.80 vs 0.38 ± 2.15, P = 0.002). The experimental group also showed a significant improvement in confidence (change, 16.48 ± 16.21 vs 3.05 ± 13.53, P = 0.047) and maximal excursion of center of pressure in forward (change, 0.86 ± 1.89 cm vs 0.17 ± 0.26 cm, P = 0.048), left (change, 0.88 ± 2.63 cm vs 0.07 ± 0.48 cm, P = 0.010), and right (change, 1.63 ± 2.82 cm vs 0.05 ± 0.17 cm, P = 0.046) directions of limits of stability compared to the control group. Conclusion: A program based on core stability in comparison with non-specific exercise benefits dynamic balance and confidence and increases center of mass excursion in patients with Parkinson's disease. Objective: This study investigated the effectiveness of a core stability training physiotherapy programme vs. acupuncture for the management of balance and functional capacity impairments of women with Fibromyalgia. Design: Single-blind randomized controlled trial. Setting: Outpatients setting. Subjects: Women with Fibromyalgia and balance impairment. Interventions: Participants were randomized to a core stability physiotherapy programme group (n = 45), acupuncture treatment group (n = 45) and control group (n = 45) for 13 weeks. Main Measures: Measures were taken at baseline (week 0), postintervention (week 6) and follow-up (week 13). The primary outcome measures were static balance (posturography) and dynamic balance and functional mobility (Berg Balance Scale, timed up and go test and 10-m walk). The secondary outcome measure was functional capacity (Fibromyalgia Health Assessment Questionnaire and the physical function item from the Spanish Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire). Results: In all, 103 participants completed the study. The results showed statistically significant improvements in the acupuncture and physiotherapy groups vs. the control group at week 6 regarding Berg Balance Scale (P = 0.00, both groups), timed up and go test (P = 0.00 and P = 0.01, respectively) and 10-m walk test at comfortable speed (P = 0.02 and P = 0.03, respectively). The 10-m walk test at maximum speed showed significance when comparing the physiotherapy and control group (P = 0.03). However, no significant differences were found between the physiotherapy and the acupuncture groups. In relation to functional capacity, the improvements achieved after the treatments were not statistically significant. Falling seriously ill is often experienced as a life event that causes conflict with people's personal goals and expectations in life and evokes existential questions. This article presents a new humanities approach to the way people make meaning of such events and how this influences their quality of life. Incorporating theories on contingency, narrative identity, and quality of life, we developed a theoretical model entailing the concepts life event, worldview, ultimate life goals, experience of contingency, narrative meaning making, narrative integration, and quality of life. Background: The presence of early balance impairment in patients with Parkinson's disease has not been fully investigated. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine balance and mobility, self-perceived unsteadiness, self-reported falls, and effects of medication on balance among patients at their first visit to a neurological clinic and during the ensuing five years. Materials and methods: The participants were collected from a prospective longitudinal study. One hundred and forty-five patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease and 31 healthy controls were included. The outcome measures were the Berg Balance Scale, the Timed Up and Go, the Postural Stability test and a questionnaire. Results: At their first visit to the neurological clinic, the patients performed less well on the Berg Balance Scale (p < 0.001, r = 0.36), the Timed Up and Go (p < 0.001, r = 0.32), and the Postural Stability test (p < 0.001, r = 0.35) compared with the controls. In addition, a higher percentage of the patients reported self-perceived unsteadiness (p < 0.001, phi = 0.47). During the ensuing five years, balance and mobility worsened both with and without medication (p < 0.01, r = 0.24-0.37), although with small median differences. Conclusions: Further studies are needed to confirm that minor balance impairments exist even at the time of diagnosis and worsen during the ensuing five years. Impairments in balance and mobility may occur early in Parkinson's disease, especially in the elderly patients, and seem to worsen during the first five years. There is a need to use sensitive outcome measures and to ask the patients about unsteadiness and falls to detect balance impairment in this cohort. Studies measuring Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms from childhood into adulthood have been hampered by use of different measures across different developmental stages. Use of one measure across age groups would reduce measurement error and strengthen our understanding of the developmental progression of trauma. Thus, this study examined whether the UCLA PTSD Reaction-Index (PTSD-Index), which was developed for use with children and adolescents (aged 7 to 18), could be used with young adults. The utility of the measure was examined among three age groups of college students (17–18, 19–20, and 21–25). Sex differences and race/ethnicity differences were also examined. Findings indicate that the PTSD-Index is internally consistent and reliable when used with college students. Furthermore, the factor structure for the measure is similar for adolescents and for emerging adults. In sum, the PTSD-Index appears to be an appropriate screener for PTSD symptoms among young adults. The findings are relevant for both the DSM-IV and DSM-5 screening measures, and the findings have both research and clinical implications. The findings are particularly important for longitudinal studies that are challenged with addressing developmental progression of PTSD symptoms among participants, while also addressing changes in the PTSD nosology. Background: Forty years after Colonial War, veterans still show psychological disturbances affecting their marital and sexual satisfaction. Aims: This study analyzed the relationships between Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), number of PTSD symptoms and symptom clusters, psychological morbidity, marital dissatisfaction and sexual dissatisfaction; the variables that contributed to marital dissatisfaction and the mediator role of marital dissatisfaction and sexual dissatisfaction, in a sample of colonial War Veterans. Method: The sample included 138 Portuguese war veterans who answered Index of Marital Satisfaction; Index of Sexual Satisfaction; Beck Depression Inventory; State Trait Anxiety Inventory; Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Scale. Results: PTSD, number of PTSD symptoms and symptom clusters were associated with psychological morbidity, marital and sexual dissatisfaction. Age, depression symptoms and sexual dissatisfaction contributed to marital dissatisfaction and the model explained 55% of the variance. Marital dissatisfaction mediated the relationship between depression symptoms and sexual dissatisfaction, as well as between number of PTSD symptoms and sexual dissatisfaction. Conclusions: Health professionals need to take into consideration the veteran's marital and sexual relationship in clinical routine consultations. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between spiritual intelligence and aggression among elite wrestlers of adolescent age group. The present study was descriptive of correlation type in terms of method and applied in terms of purpose. The population of this research was the elite wrestlers of adolescents age group aged 14–17 (mean and SD of 15.27 ± 1.33) using the convenient sampling method for adolescent wrestling teams of Hamedan clubs selected as samples. To measure variables, King's spiritual intelligence scale and Bass and Perry aggression questionnaire were used. Pearson correlation coefficient and simple regression method were used for data analysis. Results showed a significant negative relationship between spiritual intelligence and aggression. The spiritual intelligence scores also have a significant effect on aggression. The findings show that the higher the spiritual intelligence, the less likely the aggression of the elite wrestlers in different competitions and they can have a better performance than others.
