Pulp fibers are among the most abundant and cost effective cellulose source for the fabrication of polymer-cellulose composites. A straightforward method is to impregnate pulp fibers into thermoplastic films by hot press forming. As such, tissue materials made from hard or soft wood lignin-free Kraft fibers are attractive. In this work, we prepared cellulose fiber-polylactic acid (PLA) composite films by impregnating PLA films into a 40 g/m2 tissue paper texture. A PLA film was sandwiched between single and multiple layers of cellulose tissues by hot pressing, forming composite films. Up to 40 wt% cellulose could be incorporated into PLA in this way. The effect of cellulose fiber content on the composite thermomechanical properties has been studied and reported. A natural terpene, limonene, was infused into the cellulose fibers by immersion coating to produce antioxidant composites. Limonene-modified composites demonstrated long-term antioxidant release and activity for three days, verified by 2, 2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) and free iron ions (Fe2+)/ferrozine chelating assays separately. The short-term (2 h) antioxidant activity of the biocomposites reached 50–70% levels depending on the cellulose fiber concentration for the DPPH and CUPRAC assays but remained lower at 20–55% levels in the metal chelating assay. Due to sustained release of limonene from the composites, at the end of the 5-day period, the iron chelating antioxidant activity of the composites improved reaching 75%, whereas for DPPH and CUPRAC assay, 90% activity was recorded. Three commercially-available conductive filaments were evaluated for 3D printing flexible circuits on paper. While all three filaments were printed successfully, the resulting conductive traces were found to have significantly different impedances when characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Using a graphite-doped polylactic acid filament, the flexibility of paper-based conductive traces was evaluated, methods of integrating common electrical and electronic components with the conductive traces were demonstrated, and the resistive heating of the traces was characterized. The ability to 3D print conductive traces on paper using commercially available materials opens many opportunities for rapid prototyping of flexible electronics and for integrating electronic circuits with paper-based microfluidic devices. There is a continuing demand for bio-sustainable and readily recyclable polymers for hot food packaging and hot beverage containers. An important candidate for these applications is poly(lactic acid), PLA, which possesses insufficient heat deflection temperature (HDT) performance, short of being fully crystallized. In order to address this issue, correlations were established for the observed enhancement in HDT with PLA resin after annealing with both thermal properties and the crystallinity of PLA (Ingeo™ 4032D) and extrusion melt blends thereof. The kinetic parameters of crystallization (reaction order, n and rate constant, k (s)) were obtained after fitting the Avrami equation. The reaction order for all of the systems had an n of approximately 3. Models derived from the Avrami equation with n ~ 3 are consistent with systems that undergo heterogeneous nucleation and subsequent spherulitic crystal growth. The addition of paper and talc did not change the model but did change the rate of crystallization. An increased quantity of cellulosic filler led to an increased rate of crystallization. The smaller particle sized fillers offered the greatest improvement in the rate of crystallization. However, the smaller-sized inorganic fillers did not appear to further improve HDT above that of the annealed blends of PLA/paper. The melting temperature for the PLA and all of the blends thereof formed containing paper from different sources of talc had identical melting temperatures ( T ). The variations in the HDTs of the composites were not found to be mirrored in the T . Annealing typically raised the crystallinity from approximately 10-15 to 30-40%. In situ determinations of enhanced moduli via annealing were performed using solid torsion bar dynamic mechanical spectroscopy, the results of which support the findings obtained via DSC. Natural fibers are gaining much interest in composite materials because of their potential to replace conventional glass fibers. In particular, unidirectional flax fiber composites have shown excellent mechanical properties with different thermoset matrices. However, few data are available when they are made with a biodegradable thermoplastic matrix. This paper compares the mechanical properties of two types of unidirectional flax composites using polylactic acid as the matrix: one made with layers of aligned flax rovings alone and the other containing an additional paper layer fabricated using paper making techniques. The results show that specific tensile properties of the flax/PLA (252 MPa·cm 3 ·g −1 ) and flax-paper/PLA (217 MPa·cm 3 ·g −1 ) composites are similar to those made using woven glass fabrics impregnated with epoxy (227–278 MPa·cm 3 ·g −1 ). Very high impact strength (600 J/m) was also obtained for UD flax-paper composites compared to unreinforced resin (15 J/m). The development of all-bio-based composites is one of the relevant aspects of pursuing a carbon-neutral economy. This study aims to explore the possibility to reinforce polylactic acid by the combination of cellulose and chitin nanofibers instead of a single reinforcement phase. Polylactic acid colloidal suspension, cellulose and chitin nanofiber suspensions were mixed using only water as mixing medium and subsequently dewatered to form paper-like sheets. Sheets were hot pressed to melt the polylactic acid and form nanocomposites. The combination of cellulose and chitin nanofiber composites delivered higher tensile properties than its counterparts reinforced with cellulose or chitin nanofibers alone. Cellulose and chitin appear to complement each other from the aspect of the formation of a rigid cellulose nanofiber percolated network, and chitin acting as a compatibilizer between hydrophobic polylactic acid and hydrophilic cellulose.

Newly developed packaging paper made of biopulped pineapple leaf fiber (PALF) and poly(lactic acid)(PLA) was studied. PALF packaging sheets were solvent impregnated with PLA at different concentrations in order to improve their moisture barrier and mechanical performance. With the impregnation of PLA at a concentration of 4%, the packaging material exhibited a low moisture uptake and a high tear index. An electron micrograph of the sample at 4% impregnation revealed uniform and packed PLA reversed microsphere morphology. These results suggest that surface coating via biodegradable polymers, such as PLA, may be utilized for manufacturing packaging materials in industrial applications. This study investigates the antibacterial properties of the natural oil from Copaifera multijuga which was embedded in bio-based materials, to be used in active packaging applications. For this purpose, the naturally extracted copaiba oil was first characterized by gas chromatography and thermogravimetry. Its antibacterial properties were evaluated and confirmed against gram-positive bacteria ( Bacillus subtilis ). The copaiba oil was incorporated into two bio-based materials: (i) paper and (ii) poly(lactic acid), PLA, films. This incorporation was made following two strategies: either at the surface, thanks to a coating process, or in the bulk, through impregnation (paper samples) or by film casting (PLA films). The antibacterial tests confirmed activity against B. subtilis in paper with a copaiba oil content of approximately 20 wt%. For the PLA films, the same amount showed satisfactory results against the same bacteria. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time that copaiba oil has been incorporated on paper sheets and plastic films, with the confirmation of the maintenance of the effective antibacterial properties. The materials developed in this work through simple procedures have great perspective to be used as biodegradable packaging with bactericide effect, to improve the shelf life of food products. The purpose of the research was to produce nanofiber-modified paper with enhanced strength. The materials used in the research were cotton-comber pulp and a composite of PLA (polylactic acid) and PHB (polyhydroxybutyrate) nanofibers. Two sets of test sheets were formed: from the pure cotton-comber pulp and from the cotton-comber pulp with 5.5% of ground nanofibers. A range of strength tests showed a significant strength improvement (an increase in breaking length of 17%). Background, aim, and scope Packaging uses nearly 40% of all polymers, a substantial share of which is used for sensitive merchandise such as moisture-sensitive food. To find out if bio-based materials are environmentally advantageous for this demanding application, we compared laminated, printed film across the whole life cycle. Materials and methods We compared bio-based materials (paper, polylactic acid, bio-based polyethylene, and a biobased polyester) as well as conventional ones (polypropylene, polyethylene). Data stemmed from13 companies that produce raw materials, films and/or laminates and which co-operated with us in a project commissioned by a large food producer. The functional unit chosen for this study is 1 m2 of packaging film. This is (mostly) laminated, printed film that is delivered on reels to the food industry, where the laminate is cut, sealed and filled. The impact assessment is presented for non-renewable energy use, total energy use, global warming potential, depletion of abiotic resources, photo-oxidant formation, acidification, eutrophication, water use, and land use. Results For Inner Packs that get in direct contact with food and therefore require certain barrier properties, the environmental performance of many laminates is not better than the reference, petrochemical material. However, our study shows that paper/polypropylene laminates perform equally well as the current material (polypropylene) if the material is landfilled, and better if incinerated with energy recovery. For Outer Packs, bio-based polyethylene film shows a particularly low environmental impact. Paper/bio-based polyester laminates also offer significant savings compared with the current material. For Inner as well as Outer Packs, laminates including polylactic acid offer environmental advantages when accounting for wind credits or when assuming a future technology level for polymer or film production. Discussion Increased technology maturity of PLA and cellulose in the film production stage offers significant environmental improvement with respect to global warming potential compared with today's technology. Though large, the uncertainty regarding the degree of degradation of paper, cellulose, PLA and bio-based polyester, is not decisive for the conclusions. Conclusions and recommendations Generally, laminates and films (partly) consisting of bio-based polymers offer opportunities for significantly reducing environmental impacts of food packaging. Large variations in land-use are possible depending on the type of bio-based material that is used. The environmental advantages differ depending on the polymer and the final product (Inner vs. Outer Pack). Lack of experience and investment in converting bio-based polymers into final products and comparatively unfavourable material properties result in lower environmental advantages for some novel bio-based materials than one may expect. However, a) already today, the options with the lowest global warming potential are partly or fully bio-based and b) bio-based materials will benefit more from technological progress than conventional materials, potentially making certain bio-based laminates highly attractive options for the future. Overall, Outer Packs are more promising than Inner Packs when introducing bio-based wrappings to replace the current petrochemical material because a) the opportunities are clearer for this application and b) the product specifications (required barrier properties) are less demanding. Starting with the Outer Packs would also allow bio-based polymer producers and processors to invest and learn, thus offering the opportunity to reduce the environmental impact even further.
