In this paper, taking the Wufeng Formation-Longmaxi Formation shales in the southeastern region of the Sichuan Basin as an example, the thin section, X-ray, geochemical testing and TIMA techniques are used to systematically study the source analysis and characterization of quartz fractions, and in turn, the mechanism of the development of highly brittle shale reservoirs is revealed. The results of the study show that the high quartz mineral content segments are well stacked with the organic matter enriched segments. Excess silica occurs in the lower part of the Wufeng -Longmaxi Formation, and some samples in the middle and upper part of the Wufeng and Longmaxi Formation have excess silica deficit; the K2O/Na2O ratio is generally >1, reflecting that the reservoir quality is affected by the biogenic silica. Land- sourced detrital quartz grains, on the other hand, are significantly larger and are generally distributed over a range of tens to more than a hundred micrometers, often with clay minerals and organic matter around the periphery. Biogenic siliceous fossils are mainly developed in the lower part of the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation, dominated by biogenic siliceous remains such as radiolarians. TIMA test results show that quartz belongs to the mineral type with absolutely dominant content ratio in the bottom samples of the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation and reflects the characteristics of fine-grained-muddy/ carbonaceous horizontal laminar deposition. There are three different types of quartz grain distribution patterns in shale reservoirs, including excess silica type, multi-source silica type, and land-source silica type. The layers of highly brittle shale reservoirs are all at the bottom of Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation, which is rich in biogenic silica, and at the same time, they are also in the active layers of montmorillonite and other abundant volcanic activities, and they are developed in the closed basins as well as the deep-water land scaffolds, so that the reservoirs have a good self-sealing; at the same time, the combination of microcrystalline quartz+organic matter makes the reservoirs have an excellent mechanical brittleness. Lacustrine shale has garnered significant attention due to its significant resource potential. The Jurassic shale in the Sichuan Basin is an important target for lacustrine shale exploration in China. However, previous studies have predominantly focused on the Da'anzhai member of the Ziliujing Formation, and little attention has been paid to the shale of other strata. This paper aims to address this gap by investigating the Jurassic Dongyuemiao member in the Sichuan Basin. The study systematically characterizes the geological properties of the Dongyuemiao shale system, reconstructs the paleosedimentary environment, identifies the key factors influencing organic matter (OM) enrichment and physical properties, and assesses its resource potential through comparative analysis. Our results show that the Dongyuemiao shale was deposited in an oxic and semi-humid sedimentary environment characterized by intense weathering conditions. The enrichment of OM in the shale is primarily controlled by redox conditions and salinity, with redox conditions playing the most crucial role in OM accumulation. In terms of pore system characterization, clay mineral-associated pores dominate the pore types in the Dongyuemiao shale, while two types of organic matter-associated pores are also widely observed. The development of framework grain-associated pores is limited and only present in certain siliceous and carbonate minerals. The shales of the Dongyuemiao member and the Da'anzhai member exhibit slight differences in TOC content. However, the kerogen in the Dongyuemiao member displays higher hydrocarbon generation potential, and the Dongyuemiao shale exhibits more favorable pore structure parameters. Overall, the Dongyuemiao shale does not exhibit any significant disadvantages compared to the Da'anzhai shale. Therefore, it deserves greater attention in future exploration endeavors. Organic matter serves as the hydrocarbon-generating parent material for shale reservoirs, in which organic pores are also important reservoir spaces. Different types of organic matter have wide differences in hydrocarbon generation and pore-forming ability. Based on the occurrence state of organic matter, in the over-mature Marine shale organic matter mainly includes in situ and migrated organic matter. It has been extensively studied on in situ organic matter and organic matter migrating into inorganic pores, while there are few reports of organic matter migrating into microfractures. In this study, the over-mature Marine shale reservoir in the first sub-member of the Silurian Longmaxi Formation in the Luzhou area of the Sichuan Basin is taken as an example. Core observation, optical microscope, high-precision large-view scanning (MAPS, modular automated processing system) and mineral analysis scanning (QEMSCAN, quantitative evaluation of minerals by scanning electron microscopy) were conducted to observe the morphological characteristics of organic matter veins, and then analyze the genesis and pore-forming characteristics of such organic matter. The results show that: ① Organic matter veins (OM veins) are soluble organic matter with fractures as an effective channel, and OM veins in the study section is easy to form under the condition of micro-fractures in the shale sweet segment after organic matter generating oil and before gas generation ② Organic matter in the OM veins are less efficient in pore-forming, with sparse pores and smaller pore sizes. The occurrence of fractures varies greatly, including horizontal fractures, oblique fractures and high-angle fractures, which are mostly developed in the Long111 and Long112 layers. ③ The development of OM veins can indicate better reservoir conditions, that is, the layers have strong hydrocarbon generation intensity (strong pore-forming ability of organic matter) and high brittle mineral content (strong reservoir compressibility). The new findings in this paper reveal that OM veins are instructive for the determination of geological–engineering sweet spots in the Longmaxi Formation in the Sichuan Basin, and also provide guidance for future research on occurrence form and geological significance of different types of organic matter. The study of extraordinarily high organic matter content (EHOMC) is beneficial to promote the fine evaluation of shale oil and gas, but so far, there have been few studies on its mechanism. This paper carried out a comprehensive lithological and geochemical analysis of the black shales of the Wujiaping Formation in the Kaijiang-Liangping Trough. The results showed that the black shales of the Wujiaping Formation can be divided into two units (the upper and lower parts), and EHOMC occurs in its upper part. The redox-sensitive trace elements (RSTEs), MoEF-UEF covariation, and Ni/Co correlation showed that the lower part of Wujiaping Formation was a weakly restricted oxidation environment, while the upper part evolved into a sulfidation reducing environment. The productivity indicator elements (BaXS, NiXS, CuXS, P, and Mo) indicated that the upper Wujiaping Formation had higher primary productivity than the lower part. However, rare earth elements ((La/Yb)N) indicated that the deposition rate in the lower part of the Wujiaping Formation was higher than that in the upper part. In general, although the oxygenated water in the lower part of the Wujiaping Formation is not conducive to the preservation of organic matter, the high input of nutrients from land sources and the high deposition rate inhibit the decomposition of organic matter, so the lower part has a certain degree of organic matter accumulation. The sulfidation reducing environment and high paleoproductivity are the main reasons for the enrichment of organic matter in the upper part of the Wujiaping Formation. In addition, the sulfidation reducing environment and high paleoproductivity occurred during the violent upwelling at the end of Guadeloupe, a period of high sea level, these factors have jointly contributed to the enrichment of OM in the upper the Wujiaping Formation. The upper Ordovician-lower Silurian shale has always been the main target of marine shale gas exploration in southern China. However, the shale gas content varies greatly across different regions. The organic matter content is one of the most important factors in determining gas content; therefore, determining the enrichment mechanisms of organic matter is an important problem that needs to be solved urgently. In this paper, upper Ordovician-lower Silurian shale samples from the X-1 and Y-1 wells that are located in the southern Sichuan area of the upper Yangtze region and the northwestern Jiangxi area of the lower Yangtze region, respectively, are selected for analysis. Based on the core sample description, well logging data analysis, mineral and elemental composition analysis, silicon isotope analysis, and TOC (total organic carbon) content analysis, the upper Ordovician-lower Silurian shale is studied to quantitatively calculate its content of excess silicon. Subsequently, the results of elemental analysis and silicon isotope analysis are used to determine the origin of excess silicon. Finally, we used U/Th to determine the characteristics of the redox environment and the relationship between excess barium and TOC content to judge paleoproductivity and further studied the mechanism underlying sedimentary organic matter enrichment in the study area. The results show that the excess silicon from the upper Ordovician-lower Silurian shale in the upper Yangtze area is derived from biogenesis. The sedimentary water body is divided into an oxygen-rich upper water layer that has higher paleoproductivity and a strongly reducing lower water that is conducive to the preservation of sedimentary organic matter. Thus, for the upper Ordovician-lower Silurian shale in the upper Yangtze region, exploration should be conducted in the center of the blocks with high TOC contents and strongly reducing water body. However, the excess silicon in the upper Ordovician-lower Silurian shale of the lower Yangtze area originates from hydrothermal activity that can enhance the reducibility of the bottom water and carry nutrients from the crust to improve paleoproductivity and enrich sedimentary organic matter. Therefore, for the upper Ordovician-lower Silurian shale in the lower Yangtze region, exploration should be conducted in the blocks near the junction of the two plates where hydrothermal activity was active. The Permian shale in Northeast Sichuan is an important shale oil and gas resource potential area, and the study of its organic matter characteristics and paleoenvironmental analysis is of great significance for revealing the shale oil and gas formation mechanism and resource evaluation. In this study, the organic matter of Permian shales in northeast Sichuan was carefully studied based on various analytical tools, such as petrology, laser Raman, microscopy, and principal trace elements, and the paleoenvironmental parameters of the shales were comprehensively analysed. A detailed study of the organic matter characteristics of Permian shales in northeast Sichuan reveals important features such as organic matter fractions, structural characteristics, maturity and sources. The results show that the organic matter of the shale consists mainly of solid bitumen, putrescine group, specular group and multicellular planktonic algae. Petrological observations and laser Raman analyses indicate a high maturity of the organic matter and a high content of organic carbon (TOC), showing good hydrocarbon potential. In this study, we reconstructed the palaeoenvironmental parameters and inferred the palaeoenvironmental evolution through palaeoenvironmental analyses of Permian shales in northeast Sichuan. The results of the comprehensive multi-indicator study show that the type of palaeoenvironment at the time of shale deposition was mainly an anoxic-reducing environment, and the depositional conditions were favourable to the enrichment and preservation of organic matter. In summary, the organic matter characteristics and paleoenvironmental analyses of the Permian shales in Northeast Sichuan provide important geological background information for an in-depth understanding of the formation mechanism, exploration potential and development prospect of shale hydrocarbons in this area. The results of this study can provide a scientific basis for the evaluation and development of shale oil and gas resources in this area, which is of great significance to geologists and the energy industry. Lacustrine sedimentary formations potentially contain hydrocarbons. The lacustrine sedimentary rocks of the Ziliujung and Xintiangou Formations have been investigated for their hydrocarbon potential using low-pressure nitrogen adsorption (LP-N2A), low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), total organic carbon (TOC), rock-eval pyrolysis (Rock-Eval), gas chromatography (GC), gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results show that the normalized difference of the pore parameters between the two formations is less than 10%, and the pores are mainly slit-like mesopores with high porosity. Macropores and micropores are often developed in the quartz skeleton, while mesopores often occur among organic matter, clay minerals, carbonate minerals, and pyrite particles. The organic matter abundance of the Ziliujing Formation is relatively high. Additionally, the organic matter types of the two formations are mainly type II and type III, and the sources of the organic matter are plankton and bacteria which have reached the mature gas production stage. The palaeoenvironmental differences between the depositional periods of the two formations lie within 10% of each other. The warm and humid climate promotes the development of quartz minerals to further enhance the proportion of both micropores and macropores, and the clay minerals, carbonate minerals, and pyrite carried in the terrigenous detritus are closely associated with the total organic carbon (TOC), which promotes the development of mesopores to enhance the porosity. The reservoir, organic matter, and palaeoenvironmental characteristics of fine-grained sedimentary rocks in the two formations are similar, and both of them have good potential for development. 【Objective】Water shortage in dry season and nutrient deficit in Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan Province are the main factors limiting agricultural production. The present paper aimed to investigate the effects of biochar and polyacrylamide on water and fertilizer retention capacity of purple soil in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture.【Method】The field experiment was carried out with biochar application rates of 0, 10, 20, 40, 60 t/hm~2, polyacrylamide application rates of 0, 45, 90, 135, 180 kg/hm~2. 【Result】Compared with control, the percentage of effective particle size of >50 μm increased by 8.9 % under 60 t/hm~2 biochar treatment, 7.4 % under 180 kg/hm~2 polyacrylamide treatment, respectively; the soil bulk density decreased by 17.0 % under the treatment of 60 t/hm~2 biochar, which was 1.08 g/cm~3, and decreased by 13.1 % under the treatment of 135 kg/hm~2 polyacrylamide which was 1.13 g/cm~3; The soil saturated water content increased linely with the increasing application rates of biochar, 60 t/hm~2 biochar treatment increased by 20.8 %, which was 51.2 %. However, the soil saturated water content, field water holding capacity and the capillary water content increased first and then decreased with the increasing application rates of polyacrylamide, and 180 kg/hm~2 polyacrylamide treatment increased by 23.5 %, 21.3 % and 25.0 % which was 53.9 %, 32.3 % and 45.6 %, respectively. For soil organic matter, the treatment of 60 t/hm~2 biochar, the treatment of 135 and 180 kg/hm~2 polyacrylamide were improved by 86.4 %, 146.4 % and 186.4 % which was 11.52,15.23 and 17.70 g/kg, respectively. 【Conclusion】The application of biochar and polyacrylamide can improve the soil structure and the ability of purple soil to store water and maintain fertilizer. The sealing capacities of shale, roof, and floor strata are essential for the preservation of shale gas. Sealing capacity development and its influence on shale gas composition and organic matter pore development are important but have not been addressed by existing studies. In this paper, the Upper Ordovician Wufeng-the first member of the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Fm. in the Yangtze region is selected as the study object. We dissected the J1 well in the Jiaoshiba block inside the Sichuan Basin and the Y6 well in the Youyang block outside the Sichuan Basin to analyze the gas components and carbon isotopes in recovered shale gas. In this study, two microscope techniques (i.e., FIB-SEM and FIB-HIM), porosity measurement, TOC content analysis, permeability tests, isothermal adsorption measurements, are utilized. The analytical results show that both the roof and floor strata have vertical sealing effects on the organic-rich shale due to their different physical properties compared to the shale. The shale overburden pressure increases with burial depth, and the adsorbed gas increases with increasing TOC content and thickness: all of these can lead to a decrease in permeability and an increase in self-sealing capacity. This paper determined the formation mechanism of the sealing capacity for shale, roof and floor strata. Furthermore, the control patterns of "sealing capacity strength" on the shale gas source and organic matter pore development are clarified. The main findings are as follows: when the shale, roof, and floor strata have a strong sealing capacity, only a small amount of liquid hydrocarbons can be discharged from the shale, but the natural gas formed due to liquid hydrocarbon cracking is abundant. Under such circumstances, shale gas has a mixed origin of liquid hydrocarbon cracked gas and kerogen cracked gas; the carbon isotopes are inverted; abundant pyrobitumen pores with high porosity and good connectivity are developed. When the sealing capacities are weak, the amount of liquid hydrocarbons discharged from the shale are high, and the amount of natural gas is low. The shale gas is mainly derived from kerogen cracking with weak or no carbon isotope inversion, and kerogen pores are small with poor connectivity. These findings will advance the study of shale gas formation mechanisms and provide a scientific basis for selecting shale gas exploration area. • Due to different physical properties, the roof and floor strata provide a seal for the organic-rich shale. • As the burial depth, TOC content, and the shale thickness increase, the shale has a stronger sealing capacity. • Sealing capacity plays an important role in the characteristics of shale gas and organic matter pore development. The Laoyingqing zinc deposit is located in the Pb-Zn deposit concentration district in northeastern Yunnan, with a geotectonic location on the southwestern edge of the Yangtze block. This deposit occurs in the interlayer fracture zone of the Huangcaoling Formation slate in the Middle Proterozoic Kunyang Group. In this deposit, zinc is significantly enriched compared to lead, and the sulfur isotopic composition of sphalerite shows δ34SCDT close to negative values. These characteristics are different from the common Pb-Zn deposits that occur in Sinian and Carboniferous carbonate rocks in northeastern Yunnan. The genesis of this deposit and its similarities to and differences from other Pb-Zn deposits hosted in carbonate rocks in the Sichuan–Yunnan–Guizhou Pb-Zn metallogenic triangle area (SYGT) need further research. This article selects typical rock (ore) samples for fluid inclusion, trace element, and H–O isotope analyses. The results show that (1) the homogenization temperature of the fluid inclusions is 130~306.5 °C, the salinity is 7.17 wt%~20.67 wt% NaCleq, and the density of the ore-forming fluids is 0.86–1.07 g/cm3. Overall, these ore-forming fluids belong to medium–low-temperature, medium–low-salinity, and medium–low-density ore-forming fluids, and they have reducibility. The fluid pressure is 36.3~85.6 Mpa, and the mineralization depth is 1.34~3.17 km. (2) The ore-forming fluids mainly came from deep-source metamorphic water and basin brine containing organic matter. (3) The ore-forming materials mainly came from the surrounding rocks (Kunyang Group). (4) The trace element characteristics of this deposit are different from sedimentary-exhalative type, magmatic hydrothermal type, and skarn type of Pb-Zn deposits, and have little difference from MVT Pb-Zn deposits. Based on the comprehensive analysis, this deposit is classified as a medium–low-temperature hydrothermal vein-type zinc deposit unrelated to magmatic activity. This study extends the ore-bearing surrounding rocks of Pb-Zn deposits in the SYGT to the slate of the Kunyang Group, enriching the regional Pb-Zn deposit mineralization theory and providing new ideas for mineralization prediction. Studying the accumulation rules of organic matter (OM) in paleo-ocean sediments can not only enhance our understanding of how OM becomes enriched in ancient oceans but also provide guidance for the exploration of shale gas in unconventional shale strata. A breakthrough has been made in shale gas exploration in the early Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation in South China. However, less attention has been paid to the intraplatform basin of the Yangtze Platform, and the factors controlling organic matter enrichment in this special region remain unclear. This study focuses on a continuous drilling core across the full well section of the Qiongzhusi Formation in the intraplatform basin of the Yangtze Platform. Through the comprehensive analysis of total organic carbon (TOC), major and trace elements, and Mo isotopes, this study investigates the controlling factors for OM enrichment with δ98/95Mo ratios utilized to identify the existence of euxinic bottom water. The examined 240 m long core can be divided into four units, where the TOC values of the lower Units 1 and 2 (0.2–5.0 wt.%) average higher than the upper Units 3 and 4 (0.2–2.5 wt.%). Redox indicators (U/Th, Ni/Co, EF(Mo)—EF(U)) indicate an increasing oxidation of bottom waters from the bottom upwards. δ98/95Mo data further confirm the presence of weakly euxinic conditions in Units 1 and 2, addressing the ongoing controversy surrounding bottom water redox environments. Primary productivity indicators (Ni/Al, Cu/Al) suggest a relatively low average productivity level within the intraplatform basin. The upwelling indicators EF(Co) * EF(Mn) of different profiles in the Yangtze Platform suggest that low productivity within the intraplatform basin can be mainly attributed to the absence of upwelling. Consequently, this study proposes an organic matter enrichment mechanism for the Qiongzhusi Formation in the intraplatform basin, which emphasizes the significance of the redox environment in the formation of high-quality hydrocarbon source rocks in restricted environments that lack upwelling, setting it apart from the deep ocean. The Lower Cambrian Qiongzhusi formation and the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation are the two most important shale strata. Although differences between these two shales have become the focus of current research, a comparative study of the depositional environments has not been performed. Using cores of both Longmaxi and Qiongzhusi formations of well W201, the in situ comparison of the sedimentary environment was realized, and the interference of other factors was eliminated, which made the results more reliable. In this study, 72 samples from both formations were collected from well W201, Weiyuan shale gas field, Sichuan Basin. A systematic study, including total organic carbon (TOC) content, mineral composition, and major/trace elemental analyses, was conducted to elucidate the paleoenvironments of the Qiongzhusi and Longmaxi formations. The results show both formations were deposited in non-sulfidic environments. The depositional conditions of the Longmaxi formation varied from reducing to oxidizing from bottom to top. The detrital flow happened during the deposition of the Qiongzhusi formation, which resulted in three stages of the redox conditions, from anoxic to oxic and then to anoxic from bottom to top of the Qiongzhusi formation. The anoxic conditions of the Qiongzhusi formation were considerably stronger than those of the Longmaxi formation. Both formations were deposited in warm and humid climates. Ratios of Eu/Eu*, Y/Y*, LaN/YbN, light rare earth element (LREE) and heavy rare earth element (HREE) revealed that the Longmaxi formation was primarily controlled by seawater, whereas the Qiongzhusi formation was jointly influenced by seawater and hydrothermal fluid. The organic matter enrichment for the Longmaxi and Qiongzhusi formations was controlled by paleoproductivity and redox conditions. Due to the slightly lower paleoproductivity and influence of detrital input, the degree of organic matter enrichment in the Qiongzhusi formation was lower than that in the Longmaxi formation. Marine organic-rich shale is widely distributed in the Upper Ordovician Wufeng Formation (WF-F) and Silurian Longmaxi Formation (LMX-F), making it an important target for shale gas exploration and development. In order to clarify the paleoenvironment evolution characteristics and the effect of depositional environment on organic matter (OM) accumulation of the marine shale in the Wufeng and Longmaxi Formations, a series of geochemical and petrological experiments were carried out, including TOC, Rock-Eval pyrolysis, XRD, and major and trace element analyses. Research results show that based on the variation characteristics of TOC, mineral composition, and paleoenvironment evolution characteristics, four units can be identified from bottom to top: Wufeng Formation (WF-F), Lower Longmaxi Formation (L-LMX-F), Middle Longmaxi Formation (M-LMX-F) and Upper Longmaxi Formation (U-LMX-F). The high-quality marine shale developed in WF-F and LMX-F in the Zigong area (TOC: 0.65–4.56%, avg. 2.15%) contains type I kerogen (kerogen type index: 86.0–98.3, avg. 92.7) and OM in mature stage (average of Rb and Tmax are 2.94%, 646 °C, respectively). Clay minerals (avg. 42.5%) and quartz (avg. 37.7%) dominate the mineral compositions, with subordinated dolomite (avg. 6.3%), feldspar (avg. 6.0%), calcite (avg. 4.0%), and pyrite (avg. 3.5%). Paleoenvironment indicators suggest that during the sedimentary period of WF-F and L-LMX-F, the paleoclimate condition was humid; the weathering condition, paleosalinity, and redox conditions were the strongest; and there was a relatively high level of paleoproductivity and a relatively low level of terrigenous detritus influx. However, during the period of M-LMX-F and U-LMX-F, the climate gradually changed from warm and humid to hot and dry; the intensity of weathering conditions, paleosalinity, and redox conditions was relatively reduced; terrigenous detritus influx increased; and the paleoproductivity decreased. Relationships between TOC and paleoclimate condition, paleosalinity, redox condition, paleoproductivity, and terrigenous detritus influx suggest that redox condition is most important controlling factor for OM enrichment. A combination of anoxic bottom water conditions and high primary productivity and a relatively low terrigenous input resulted in the enrichment of OM in the WF-F and L-LMX-F, making it a potential exploration and development target. Breakthroughs in shale gas exploration in the Upper Ordovician-Lower Silurian strata of the Upper Yangtze Platform have attracted interest in its sedimentary-tectonic evolution, but the tectonic background of the northern margin of the Upper Yangtze Platform remains unclear. In this paper, the Wufeng-Longmaxi formations on the northern margin of the Upper Yangtze Platform were investigated. Based on geochemical and mineralogical analyses of the tuffs/K-bentonites of the Wufeng Formation and the barite in the Longmaxi Formation, as well as previous research results, it was concluded that the northern margin of the Upper Yangtze Platform was in an extensional tectonic background during the Late Ordovician-Early Silurian. Detailed analysis revealed that, (1) the U–Pb zircon age of the tuff in the Bajiaokou section in South Qinling is 443.91 ± 0.92 Ma. The Zr/TiO 2 –Nb/Y diagram of the tuffs/K-bentonites indicates that their protoliths were alkaline-subalkaline basalt and andesite series rock. Based on the Th–Hf/3-Ta, Th–Tb*3-Ta*2, and TiO 2 –Nb/3-Th diagrams, there are undiscovered intraplate tension calc-alkaline basalts in the northern Yangtze Platform or the southern Qinling region, which provided volcanic clastic materials to the Ziyang, Lan'gao, Chengkou, Yichang and other regions. (2) Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the barite crystals in the Longmaxi Formation exhibit dissolution features and have a large particle size. Energy spectrum analysis of these barite crystals revealed that they have C, O, S, and Ba contents of 8.48 wt%, 22.98 wt%, 13.09 wt% and 55.44 wt%, so they are speculated to have been formed via cold methane seep genesis in a weak extensional tectonic setting. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios of the barite revealed that different types of barite were simultaneously formed in this area under the influences of hydrothermal and cold methane seeps. (3) The analysis of the heavy minerals in the Lower Silurian strata in the Bajiaokou section revealed that the provenance in the South Qinling area changed significantly during the late Early Silurian. Based on the above analyses, the northern margin of the Upper Yangtze Platform was in an extensional tectonic setting during the Late Ordovician-Early Silurian. The distribution of the total organic carbon content indicated that the extensional tectonic background provided good conditions for the enrichment and preservation of organic matter. Maturity evaluation of highly evolved organic matter is an important problem in oil and gas geochemistry, because conventional organic geochemical proxies are not applicable due to hydrocarbon generation and expulsion. In this study, we investigated the pyrobitumen in the reservoirs of the Sinian Dengying Formation in the Sichuan Basin, China. We focused on aromatic hydrocarbon biomarkers, and the calibration and application of aromatic maturity proxies using pyrobitumen reflectance and Raman spectral parameters. Our results show that only the thiophene compounds are effective maturity indicators, such as MDR (4-/1-MDBT), MDR′ (4-MDBT/(1-MDBT+4-MDBT)), MDR1 (1-MDBT/DBT), 4,6-/(1,4+1,6)-DMDBT, (2,6 +3,6)-/(1,4+1,6)-DMDBT, and [2,1]BNT/([2,1]BNT+[1,2]BNT), as these are largely independent of the optical anisotropy of pyrobitumen The condensation and incorporation of thiophene compounds can lead to an increase in the reflectance of pyrobitumen, which means the thiophene compound parameters are positively or negatively correlated with pyrobitumen reflectance New potential maturity parameters were proposed, including DMDBTs/MDBTs, TeMDBTs/(DBT+MDBTs +DMDBTs+TMDBTs+TeMDBTs), 1-MDBT/MDBTs, and [2,1]BNT/BNTs. Both complete and uncompleted radiolarian siliceous shells were developed at Wufeng-Longmaxi radiolarian siliceous shale laminae in Sichuan Basin. Micro- and ultra-micropetrological observation suggests that they were successively filled by calcite, pyrite and organic–silicon complex, where pyrite and organic–silicon complex filled dissolved pores associated with calcite during sedimentation. Calcite was derived from calcium carbonate produced by microbial activities at the seawater surface. The environment of radiolarian siliceous shell cavities, which was suitable for sulfate reducing bacterial growth or dissolved hydrogen sulfide reducing Fe3+, contributed positively to pyrite development. Organic–silicon complex development was related to microorganism metabolism that was an important silica source. Honeycomb-like organic pores were developed in cavities with complete shells, but were not developed in cavities with uncompleted shells. This is because the latter could not withstand overburden pressure compared with the former. The only approach to figure out organic pore carriers and understand sequences and development processes of minerals and organic matter is to select weakly compacted radiolarian siliceous shale laminae to carry out micro- and ultra-micropetrological observation and geochemical testing via various technologies. With the development of exploration and exploitation technologies, deep shale gas systems are gradually becoming an important target for the future petroleum industry. However, there is still a lack of systematic geological studies for deep shale gas systems, which restricts further exploration. In this paper, the deeply buried shales (more than 4000 m in depth) of the first member of Silurian Longmaxi (S 1 l1) at the southeastern margin of the Sichuan Basin are selected as the research object, and thin sections, scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations, total organic carbon (TOC) testing, nitrogen adsorption (NA), and major and trace element analyses are used to systemically identify the different lithofacies and delineate geological and geochemical features. Moreover, we reconstruct the paleoenvironment, summarize the controlling factors and mechanisms of organic matter accumulation and pore formation, and finally reveal the favorable exploration lithofacies. Our results show that there are four lithofacies that can be identified in deep S 1 l1 shale, namely, laminated organic-rich siliceous shale (S), laminated organic-rich mixed shale (RM), banded organic-lean mixed shale (LM), and banded organic-lean argillaceous shale (CM). Organic matter-hosted pores are the primary type in their pore system. The S and RM shales were mainly deposited under dysoxic to anoxic conditions with moderate watermass restriction, low terrestrial detrital influx, and high paleoproductivity, and the silica mainly originated from the diagenesis process (biogenic quartz); the LM and CM shales were sedimented under oxic conditions with high terrestrial detrital influx and low paleoproductivity, and the silica mainly originated from terrestrial detrital influx. Redox conditions, paleoproductivity, and terrestrial detrital influx together controlled the organic matter enrichment in the deep S 1 l1 shale, and the TOC content further influences the physical properties of the shale, thus determining the exploration potential of different lithofacies. Moreover, the significant impacts of lithofacies on the geological and geochemical features of the deep shale gas system are demonstrated. Compared with the middle-shallow shale gas system in the study area, due to less tectonically uplifted and tectonically active shale, the deep shale has more extraordinary preservation conditions, overpressure inheritance development, and higher gas amounts. At present, the understanding of the sedimentary paleoenvironment and organic matter enrichment law of black shale in the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation is still insufficient. This time, we investigated the total organic carbon (TOC) content, X-ray diffraction mineralogical composition, and the major and trace element abundances of the newly recovered cores of three shale gas exploration wells in Changning, Qianjiang, and Xiushan areas which were, respectively, selected to discuss and compare the varying paleoenvironmental conditions and the factors that control organic matter accumulation, such as terrigenous input, redox conditions, primary productivity, and the degree of water retention in the basin. The results show that black siliceous shale lithofacies, gray-black shale lithofacies, gray-black silty shale lithofacies, gray argillaceous siltstone lithofacies, and gray shell marl lithofacies are mainly deposited in the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation in the southeastern Sichuan Basin. Organic-rich black shale is mainly concentrated in the lower part of the Wufeng Formation and Longmaxi Formation. The continuous thickness of organic carbon content greater than 2% in the Changning area is 32 m, the continuous thickness in the Qianjiang area is 22 m, and the continuous thickness in the Xiushan area is 11 m. The hydrocarbon generation potential gradually weakens from west to east. The identification of the geochemical behavior characteristics of major and trace elements shows that enrichment of the organic matter black shale section in the Changning-Qianjiang-Xiushan areas is mainly formation in the anoxic-moderate water mass restriction environment with high primary productivity and less terrigenous detritus input under the low hydrodynamic conditions. However, the correlations of terrigenous detrital proxies Ti/Al, redox proxies V/Cr, Ni/Co, and paleoproductivity proxies Babio with the TOC contents show that the Changning area is a favorable area for the formation of organic-rich black shale and the Qianjiang area is affected by the Wuling underwater uplift; the thickness of the black shale deposits becomes thinner; the Xiushan area is adjacent to the Xuefeng uplift, and the deposition conditions of the accumulation of organic matter black shale deteriorate, which is unfavorable for shale gas exploration. Abstract: Based on structural interpretation of the recent seismic data in central Sichuan Basin, combined with data of drilling and outcrops around the basin, this paper discusses the evolutional characteristics of unconformities at various stages in the Leshan-Longnüsi paleo-uplift, and studies the evolution of the paleo-uplift and its control on Sinian gas reservoir accumulation. Sinian, Paleozoic, Mesozoic and other major regional unconformities were developed in the Leshan-Longnüsi paleo-uplift. According to characteristics and denudation thickness of the unconformities, the paleo-uplift tectonic evolution is divided into four stages, namely, embryonic, developmental, stable burial, and finalization. The analysis of the effects of the tectonic evolution on the Sinian gas accumulation show that: (1) the unconformities controlled the development of ancient karst reservoirs relevant to paleo-weathering crust; (2) the tectonic evolution of the paleo-uplift controlled evolution of organic matter and hydrocarbon migration and accumulation; (3) morphological changes of the paleo-uplift controlled the formation and the mergence of structural traps. The upper Permian Longtan Formation (LTF) shale is a new shale gas exploration and development focus in China, which was formed in a transitional depositional environment. Because of the difference in the sedimentary environment between marine-continental transitional shale and marine shale, the enrichment characteristics and mechanism of organic matter (OM) are very different. Because of a weak research foundation, the enrichment mechanism of OM in the LTF shale in the Sichuan Basin is still unclear. In this paper, shale samples of the upper Permian LTF from the Well F5 were collected, and the abundance, source and sedimentary environment of organic matter were studied by using paleoclimate, detrital input, redox, paleoproductivity and sedimentation rate parameters. The results show that the TOC content of the LTF shale is high (average = 3.04%) and reaches the high to overmature stage (average = 2.46%), indicating a favorable source rock. The LTF shale was deposited in a humid and hot climate, which was conducive to the growth and prosperity of a large number of plants. The source of organic matter was mainly terrestrial plant fragments. The sedimentary environment of the LTF shale was oxic, it had a high sedimentation rate, which reduced the oxidation rate of OM, promoted the rapid deposition of OM, and ensured the preservation of organic matter. In summary, the enrichment of OM of LTF shale in the Sichuan Basin was affected by the sedimentary environment, which was complicated. In this paper, the original nature of organic matters is introduced for the first time to reevaluate the lower Permian (P 1) source rocks. The carbonate rocks in Maokou Formation (P 1 m) whose high organic carbon values were caused by external asphalt have poor hydrocarbon generation ability, but the argillaceous rocks in P 1 m have some, especially the recent discovered black shale in Gufeng deep-water facies in the north have good hydrocarbon generation ability. The black shale is 5–20 m thick and the measured average value of organic carbon can reach up to 7.24 wt%, which can greatly increase the hydrocarbon generation capacity in the north; The studies of natural gas sources of the lower Permian in eastern Sichuan basin show that the contribution of gas source is mainly Silurian. In the north, the lower Permian source rock is supplemented, while in the south, it's greatly affected by the coal-measure source rocks of Longtan Formation (P 2 l); Take the Wutan-1 well in Tanmuchang as an example to dissect the reservoir in syncline area. The Wutan-1 well has a tested daily production of more than 80 × 104 m3, and the paleotectonic evolution history shows that it was in the high position of the structure during the generation and expulsion peak of hydrocarbon. The fracture-vuggy lithologic reservoir of Wutan-1 well is favorable for hydrocarbon capture and later preservation. According to the above, the Tanmuchang syncline has a good spatio-temporal matching relationship, which is the key to hydrocarbon accumulation and exploration. Details of the Lower Cambrian succession of the newly-discovered intraplatfrom basin of the Yangtze Platform (South China), source rocks of the giant Ediacaran-Cambrian gasfields of the Sichuan Basin, including its stratigraphic framework, redox and organic matter accumulation histories, remain unresolved. This paper describes results of a petrological and geochemical investigation of Lower Cambrian strata near the center of the Sichuan Basin with the goal of elucidating those processes that controlled the sedimentary history of the succession. We recognize two intervals of organic-rich source rocks deposited in the intraplatfrom basin, including the Maidiping Formation and overlying Qiongzhusi Formation. The Maidiping accumulated in a carbonate platform setting during Fortunian-Early Stage 2 time (~541–526.5 Ma) and comprises a variety of rock types, including carbonate, chert, phosphorite, shale, and Mn-ore layers. Total organic carbon (TOC) value ranges from 0.47 to 5.06 wt.%; the highest quality source rocks are found in its lower member. The Qiongzhusi Formation was deposited as part of a clastic shelf during Middle Stage 2-Middle Stage 3 (~526.5–515 Ma) time. This unit is dominated by shale and argillaceous siltstone and displays TOC values varying from 0.30 to 4.28 wt.%. The most organic-rich deposits are found in its lower and upper members. Redox and hydrographic proxies suggest that the intraplatfrom basin was dominated by a strongly restricted environment and anoxic bottom water conditions that experienced intermittent episodes of euxinic or dysoxic-oxic conditions during the Fortunian-Middle Stage 3 time. However, bottom water conditions appear to have been oxic during Late Stage 2 time. Accumulation of Lower Cambrian source rocks across the Yangtze Platform appears to have been closely linked to depositional setting. Our findings suggest that organic matter accumulation in the intraplatfrom basin was fundamentally redox-controlled whereas productivity exerted the greatest control on deposition of organic matter near the slope-deep basin of the Yangtze Platform. Recent decades have witnessed an increasing number of studies investigating petroleum systems with the application of rhenium-osmium (Re-Os) isotopic geochemistry. Here, we review the use of the 187Re-187Os geochronometer with respect to the geochemical behaviour of rhenium and osmium in hydrocarbon-related geological processes. The Re-Os budget in hydrocarbon source rock predominantly originates from natural water columns during its deposition. Open seawater tends to have a homogeneous Os isotopic composition because its residence time in seawater is longer than the time taken for ocean mixing. On the contrary, restricted water bodies (e.g., lakes) may have heterogeneous Os isotopic compositions due to the greater amount of terrigenous input. Hydrogenous Re and Os atoms are sequestered from the water body into sedimentary organic matter and transferred into crude oil through thermal maturation of organic matter. Thermal maturation likely does not significantly alter the Re-Os isotopic systematics of the source rock as a Re-Os isochron age of 442±21 Ma (2σ) is yielded in this study for over matured source rocks within the Silurian Longmaxi Formation from the Sichuan Basin. Re-Os atoms are mainly hosted by the highly polar/aggregating/aromatic asphaltenes in hydrocarbons, possibly chelating with organic complexes or occurring as metalloporphyrins. Resin and aromatic hydrocarbons also contribute to the Re-Os budget, but are 2 to 3 orders of magnitude lower than that of asphaltenes, whereas saturates do not contain appreciable Re-Os contents. The distribution of Re-Os atoms in hydrocarbons is heterogeneous because the duplicate analysis of pure single bitumen samples yields similar 187Os/188Os ratios whereas variable 187Re/188Os ratios. The Re-Os system in crude oils can be reset during transport away from the source rocks, with Os-rich organic fractions more readily expelled than Re-rich fractions. Contact with metal-rich fluids (e.g., hydrothermal fluid) or compositional changes related to asphaltene contents (e.g., deasphalting, biodegradation, thermal cracking and thermochemical sulphate reduction) are also likely to alter the Re-Os systematics in hydrocarbons. These geochemical features enable the 187Re-187Os isotopic system to have robust applicability for petroleum system investigations, which may use the Re-Os radiometric tool for: (1) stratigraphic correlation of source rocks, (2) dating geological events altering the asphaltene content in hydrocarbon such as hydrocarbon generation, thermochemical sulphate reduction, etc., and, (3) fingerprinting hydrocarbons. Regardless of the robustness of the 187Re-187Os geochronometer for petroleum system investigations, there are several pending questions such as partitioning between solid organic species or between organic matter and sulphide, chelating sites in hydrocarbons and Os isotopic equilibration between hydrocarbon subfractions. To improve the understanding of the Re-Os behaviour in petroleum systems, we underscore multi-proxies-based geochemistry (e.g., inorganic-organic geochemistry) and experimental studies (e.g., hydrous pyrolysis). In recent years, significant progress in shale gas exploration has been achieved in the Upper Ordovician (Wufeng Formation)-Lower Silurian (Longmaxi Formation) shales in the Upper Yangtze area, South China. Although many studies have been carried out on the Upper Ordovician-Lower Silurian shales, the controlling factors causing organic matter accumulation of these shales remain controversial. This study uses trace-element geochemistry and sedimentological methods to evaluate terrigenous input, redox conditions and primary productivity to explore the mechanisms of organic matter accumulation. The variation of terrigenous fraction elements (Al, Th and Sc) concentrations reflect a mixed influence of sea-level change and weathering. The sea-level of the Upper Yangtze Sea went through two cycles of transgression to regression during the Ordovician-Silurian transition. The Linxiang Formation, Kuanyinchiao Bed and the upper part of Longmaxi Formation developed during the periods of regression, whereas the Wufeng Formation and the lower part of the Longmaxi Formation developed during the periods of transgression. The paleo-productivity indexes of TOC content, ratios of Ba/Al and P/Al, and redox conditions proxies of Mo concentration, ratios of U/Th and V/Cr generally display similar variation patterns with respect to the sea-level changes. High TOC contents and Ba/Al and P/Al ratios indicate the paleo-productivity was high on the sea surface, as shown by relatively good positive correlations between Th vs. TOC, and Sc vs. TOC. This indicates that the paleo-productivity was controlled by the nutrients input through weathering. The good positive correlations between redox conditions indexes (U/Th and V/Cr ratios) with TOC content reflects reductive preservation conditions (anoxic to euxinic), thus implying they were an important controlling factor for organic matter accumulation. Nevertheless, redox conditions were closely associated with sea level change and organic matter decomposition. Organic matter (OM)-hosted pores are the most prevalent pores in organic-rich shale, in which shale gas is generated and stored. Ascertaining the pore structure of OM and its contribution to the shale pore network provides guidance for understanding deeply the complex pore network, as well as the shale gas flow and storage mechanisms. In this study, the pore structure and heterogeneity of Wufeng–Longmaxi shales and the corresponding isolated OM samples were studied comparatively by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations and gas (CO2 and N2) physisorption quantification. The Wufeng–Longmaxi shales are rich in OM, with total organic carbon (TOC) contents of 1.48–3.59 wt.%. The SEM-observed microscopic pores were primarily OM-hosted pores and intra-particle pores within clays. Compared to the pore structure per gram of bulk shale, that of isolated OM showed a significantly larger micropore (d < 2 nm) volume and specific surface area (SSA), meso-pore (d = 2–50 nm) and fine macro-pore (50 < d ≤ 80 nm) volume, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller SSA. Moreover, the pore structure heterogeneity of the bulk shale was much stronger than that of the isolated OM, revealing that pores associated with minerals could enhance the heterogeneity of shale to some extent. The pore size distributions of the bulk shale (1 g) and the corresponding weight-normalized isolated OM (1 g × TOC) were compared. It was revealed that shale pores with diameters smaller than 20 nm were provided by OM together with minerals, while almost all pores with diameters of 20–80 nm occurred within the OM. Geological factors are key elements to control shale gas enrichment and influence the accurate estimation of shale gas reserve. However, the impact of the main geological factors, such as porosity, mineralogy, and organic matter, on marine shale gas enrichment and reserve calculation has not yet been fully clarified. Herein, we measured gas adsorption, porosity, mineralogical composition, and total organic carbon content of the marine shale samples from the Jiaoshiba area of Fuling gas field in Sichuan Basin, South China, and investigate the relationships between the geological factors and the adsorbed gas content. The results show that adsorbed gas content is positively correlated with total organic carbon and porosity; the larger specific surface area of samples with more clay minerals essentially contributes to shale gas enrichment. Additionally, the sealing of faults imposes a significant impact on shale gas accumulation. The probability volume method was applied to calculate the shale gas reserve. The reserves of P90 (the most pessimistic reserve), P50 (the most likely reserve), and P10 (the most optimistic reserve) were calculated, respectively, which provides useful information to reduce the risk in shale gas development. Large amounts of fracturing flowback and wastewater with complex compositions are produced during hydraulic fracturing. Characterization of hydraulic fracturing flowback and produced water (HF-FPW) is an important initial step in efforts to determine a suitable treatment method for this type of wastewater. In the present study, fracturing flowback and produced water samples were obtained from well CN-F and well CN-E in the prophase and anaphase stages of the Changning shale gas mining area. Chemical characterization of inorganic and organic substances was then conducted. Metal contents were determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), and all inorganic anions involved were determined by ion chromatography. The organic pollutant components were analyzed in detail by combining Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS). Results showed that samples contained salt (TDS = 30,000–50,000 mg/L), metals (e.g., 650 ± 50 mg/L calcium), and total organic carbon (TOC = 32–178 mg/L). The organic substances detected in all samples could be divided into six categories, alkanes, aromatics, halogenated hydrocarbons, alcohols, esters, and ketones. C6–C21 straight-chain alkanes and C7–C13 naphthenes had the highest amount of organic matter, reaching more than 48%. The organic matter contained fracturing fluid additives, such as surfactants (e.g., ethylene glycol), and nitrotrichloromethane, which is a chlorinated product of some additives. A scientific exploration well (CK1) was drilled to expand the oil/gas production in the western Sichuan depression, SW, China. Seventy‐three core samples and four natural gas samples from the Middle–Late Triassic strata were analyzed to determine the paleo‐depositional setting and the abundance of organic matter (OM) and to evaluate the hydrocarbon‐generation process and potential. This information was then used to identify the origin of the natural gas. The OM is characterized by medium n‐alkanes (nC15–nC19), low pristane/phytane and terrigenous aquatic ratios (TAR), a carbon preference index (CPI) of ∼1, regular steranes with C29 > C27 > C28, gammacerane/C30hopane ratios of 0.15–0.32, and δDorg of −132‰ to −58‰, suggesting a marine algal/phytoplankton source with terrestrial input deposited in a reducing–transitional saline/marine sedimentary environment. Based on the TOC, HI index, and chloroform bitumen "A," the algal‐rich dolomites of the Leikoupo Formation are fair–good source rocks; the grey limestones of the Maantang Formation are fair source rocks; and the shales of the Xiaotangzi Formation are moderately good source rocks. In addition, maceral and carbon isotopes indicate that the kerogen of the Leikoupo and Maantang formations is type II and that of the Xiaotangzi Formation is type II–III. The maturity parameters and the hopane and sterane isomerization suggest that the OM was advanced mature and produced wet–dry gases. One‐dimensional modeling of the thermal‐burial history suggests that hydrocarbon‐generation occurred at 220–60 Ma. The gas components and C–H–He–Ar–Ne isotopes indicate that the oil‐associated gases were generated in the Leikoupo and Maantang formations, and then, they mixed with gases from the Xiaotangzi Formation, which were probably contributed by the underlying Permian marine source rocks. Therefore, the deeply‐buried Middle–Late Triassic marine source rocks in the western Sichuan depression and in similar basins have a great significant hydrocarbon potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A key target of shale gas exploration and production in China is the organic‐rich black shale of the Wufeng Formation‐Longmaxi Formation in the Sichuan Basin and its periphery. The set of black shale contains abundant graptolites, which are mainly preserved as flattened rhabdosomes with carbonized periderms, is an important organic component of the shale. However, few previous studies had focused on the organic matter (OM) which is derived from graptolite and its pore structure. In particular, the contributions of graptolites to gas generation, storage, and flow have not yet been examined. In this study, focused ion beam‐scanning electron microscope (FIB‐SEM) was used to investigate the characteristics of the graptolite‐derived OM and the micro‐nanopores of graptolite periderms. The results suggested that the proportion of OM in the graptolite was between 19.7% and 30.2%, and between 8.9% and 14.4% in the surrounding rock. The total organic carbon (TOC) content of the graptolite was found to be higher than that of the surrounding rock, which indicated that the graptolite played a significant role in the dispersed organic matter. Four types of pores were developed in the graptolite periderm, including organic gas pores, pyrite moulage pores, authigenic quartz moldic pores, and microfractures. These well‐developed micro‐nano pores and fractures had formed an interconnected system within the graptolites which provided storage spaces for shale gas. The stacked layers and large accumulation of graptolites resulted in lamellation fractures openning easily, and provided effective pathways for the gas flow. A few nanoscale gas pores were observed in the graptolite‐derived OM, with surface porosity lie in 1.5%–2.4%, and pore diameters of 5–20 nm. The sapropel detritus was determined to be rich in nanometer‐sized pores with surface porosity of 3.1%–6.2%, and pore diameters of 20–80 nm. Due to the small amount of hydrocarbon generation of the graptolite, supporting the overlying pressure was difficult, which caused the pores to become compacted or collapsed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Lower Silurian Longmaxi Shale in Southeast Chongqing of Sichuan Basin in China is considered to be a potential shale gas reservoir by many scholars in recent years. The special shale gas well, namely, Pengye-1 well, was selected as a case study to evaluate the characteristics of the shale gas reservoir. A series of experiments were performed to analyze the geochemical, mineralogical, and petrophysical features and gas content using samples of the Longmaxi Shale from Pengye-1 well. The results show that the organic and inorganic porosities of these samples are range of 0.08–2.73% and 0.06–2.65%, with the average of 1.10% and 1.76%, respectively. The inorganic pores primarily contribute to the porosity until the TOC content is more than 3%. Organic matter plays an important role in adsorbed gas content. The adsorbed gas is dominant in the Longmaxi Shale of Pengye-1 well, which ranges from 0.46 to 2.24 cm3/g, with an average of 1.38 cm3/g. The free gas content ranges from 0.45 to 0.84 cm3/g with an average of 0.68 cm3/g, and is 24.4–49.7 percent of total gas with an average of 37.5%. The bottom part of the Longmaxi Shale is the most favorable for shale gas exploring, which is higher of brittleness mineral content, porosity and gas content. Compare with the other five shales in America, the Lower Silurian Longmaxi Shale is derived from older sedimentary periods with significantly higher thermal maturity and has experienced several periods of intense tectonic, which are unfavorable for the shale gas enrichment. Here we present six key parameters that have been applied to evaluate the Silurian Longmaxi shale gas accumulations of southern Sichuan Province. These parameters include richness of organic matter, single layer shale thickness, burial depth of the shale, maturity, shale properties, and brittle mineral content. In combination with drilling data, the lower limits of these six parameters for marine shale gas have been evaluated and the following conclusions are drawn: (1) Organic carbon recovery, gas content inversion, and production tests have been applied for the first time to measure the lower limit of TOC, which is determined to be 1.0%. (2) Based on the hydrocarbon generation and expulsion theory for source rocks and the characteristics of Longmaxi shale, the lower limit of the single-layer thickness is estimated to be 30 m, of which a thickness of at least 15 m should contain high-quality shale. (3) Based on the correlation of TOC and porosity, the lower limit of gas-filled porosity is 1.2%. (4) Other parameters, such as maturity, burial depth, and brittle mineral content have also been studied with regard to the geologic conditions of southern Sichuan. Based on the study results, an evaluation index system has been established for highly evolved marine shale gas, and the system has been applied successfully to geologically screened shale gas occurrences in southern Sichuan Province.
