Objectives: To conduct psychometric testing of the Chinese version of the National Health Service Sustainability Model as an instrument to assess the sustainability of innovation in the Chinese nursing setting. Background: Evidence‐based practice is recognized worldwide as a way to improve the quality of healthcare; however, many evidence‐based practice programmes decline over time and do not sustain the benefits of their improvements. A sustainability assessment tool is used internationally but its use has not been validated in China. Design: A methodological study to test instrument validity and reliability. Methods: The data collection was conducted from 15 June 2022 to 31 August 2022. The internal consistency of the Chinese version of the sustainability model was measured with Cronbach's alpha. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to test the model's structural validity. Results: Four hundred eighty‐three questionnaires were returned, of which 478 were valid. The short time taken to evaluate the Chinese version of the sustainability model demonstrated its efficiency and ability to adapt to a busy clinical environment. The confirmatory factor analysis showed a good fit model and supported the convergence validity of the sustainability model. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.905 for the total scale, which indicated good internal consistency. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that the Chinese version of the sustainability model is a valid, reliable and efficient tool for measuring the sustainability of evidence‐based practices in Chinese nursing settings. Aims: Dehydration is one of the common complications of dysphagia and poses significant risks including hospitalization and mortality, but the relationship between dysphagia and dehydration has received little attention. This study aims to determine the prevalence and risk factors for dehydration of patients with dysphagia in eastern China, and to provide reference for early identification and prevention of dehydration. Methods: A descriptive, cross‐sectional design was conducted. Three hundred and thirty‐seven (n = 337) patients with dysphagia participated in the study between August and December 2022. Information relating to participants' demographic variables, nutrition, cognition, functional, hydration status and fluid intake was collected. Univariate analysis was used to examine related impact factors, and then binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine reliable impact factors. Results: Among 337 patients with dysphagia, the average age was 63.47 ± 16.96, most participants were male (72.1%) and married (91.7%). The prevalence of dehydration was calculated to be 43.9%, the mean plasma osmolality score was 293.53 mmol/L. Diseases with the highest prevalence were stroke (78.3%), followed by hypertension (63.5%). The risk for dehydration increased with older age, usage of more medicines such as diuretics and beta‐blockers, worse functional status and lower fluid intake. Conclusion: This study found a high percentage of dehydration in patients with dysphagia. Findings can provide a basis for targeted nursing interventions for clinical prevention and treatment of dehydration. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Background: The condition and correlation of fatigue, sleep and physical activity in postoperative patients with pituitary adenomas remain unclear. This survey aimed to evaluate the current status and influencing factors of fatigue, sleep and physical activity in postoperative patients with pituitary adenomas. Methods: Patients undergoing pituitary adenoma resection in two tertiary hospitals from November 2019 to November 2021 were included. The general data questionnaire, Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI‐20), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and international physical activity questionnaire were used for data analysis. Results: In total, 184 patients with pituitary adenomas were included. The postoperative patients with pituitary adenomas had a high level of fatigue. In total, 34 (18.5%) patients had low level of physical activity, 76(41.3%) patients had medium level of physical activity and 74 (40.2%) had high level of physical activity. Postoperative time, PSQI, physical activity level and gender were the influencing factors of fatigue in patients with pituitary adenomas (all P < 0.05). Conclusions: Postoperative patients with pituitary adenomas have a higher level of fatigue, and it is related to reduced sleep quality and activity. Relevant nursing measures should be taken according to the influencing factors of fatigue to reduce the fatigue of postoperative patients with pituitary adenomas. Aims: This review aims to assess the effect of comprehensive nursing care on liver cancer patients undergoing interventional therapy in China. Methods: In accordance with PRISMA guidelines, we reviewed randomized controlled trials and observational studies assessing the effect of comprehensive nursing care against standard care on liver cancer patients undergoing specific interventional therapies in China, including PubMed, Embase, CENTRAL and CINAHL till June 2023. Data synthesis was conducted using a random‐effects model and reported as pooled odds ratio (OR) or mean difference (MD) or standardized mean differences (SMD). Results: Ten Chinese studies with 1682 participants were evaluated. Comprehensive nursing care significantly enhanced patient outcomes in liver cancer treatment. Quality of life improved markedly (OR: 0.16, 95% CI: 0.06–0.41). Notable reductions were observed in anxiety (MD: −8.96, 95% CI: −11.52 to −6.40) and depression (MD: −9.47, 95% CI: −11.79 to −7.14). Patients also experienced increased physical (SMD: 1.70, 95% CI: 1.15–2.25), social (SMD: 1.65, 95% CI: 1.14–2.16) and activity scores (SMD: 1.94, 95% CI: 1.49–2.39), alongside a decrease in post‐treatment complications (OR: 0.28, 95% CI: 0.21–0.37), demonstrating the multifaceted benefits of comprehensive care. Conclusion: Comprehensive nursing care may improve patient outcomes in liver cancer treatment, offering potential benefits in reducing the side effects of interventional therapy. Aims: This study aims to examine the prevalence of anxiety symptoms and identify predictors of anxiety among pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus and their partners and explore the mediating role of marital satisfaction between maternal and paternal anxiety. Design: A cross‐sectional study was conducted in Guangzhou, China, from July 2021 to May 2022. Methods: A total of 306 dyads of pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus and their partners completed the State–Trait Anxiety Inventory, Locke–Wallace Marital Adjustment Test and the socio‐demographic and clinical data sheet. Results: The prevalence of anxiety symptoms was 32.4% and 36.6% in pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus and their partners, respectively. The predictors of maternal anxiety were paternal anxiety, maternal marital satisfaction, maternal monthly salary, fasting glucose value and 1‐h glucose value. By contrast, the predictors of paternal anxiety were maternal anxiety, paternal marital satisfaction and paternal monthly salary. Moreover, the relationship between maternal and paternal anxiety was mediated by marital satisfaction. Conclusions: The anxiety symptoms of pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus and their partners influence each other, and this relationship was mediated by marital satisfaction. Every couple should be screened for anxiety symptoms and treated as a team rather than focusing solely on the pregnant woman. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Australia attracts international nursing students from China to maintain its economic advantage and to alleviate the projected nursing shortage; conversely, China needs its best and brightest citizens who have trained abroad in nursing to return to cope with current challenges within its healthcare system and nursing education. This paper explores whether China can lure its foreign-trained nurses home to achieve its goals; whether China or Australia will win the nursing talent war; and do Chinese nursing students want to remain abroad or return home. The insight gained can support the development of successful human capital investment for all parties involved.

Aim: This review aimed to synthesize the available evidence on the effectiveness of nurse‐led multidisciplinary interventions in primary health care. Methods: The following Chinese and English databases were searched for relevant articles: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), from the establishment of the databases until the last updating search 1 April 2022. Two researchers screened the studies independently and extracted the data. Meta‐analysis was performed using the RevMan 5.3 software. Results: A total of 12 studies were included in this review. It was found that nurse‐led multidisciplinary interventions significantly shortened patients' length of stay in hospital (standardized mean differences [SMD] = −1.28, 95%CI: −2.03 to −0.54; P<0.001) and decreased incidences of complications (RR = 0.24, 95%CI:0.10 to 0.54; P = 0.0006) compared to the control group, and lowered patients' anxiety levels (SMD = −1.21, 95%CI: −1.99 to −0.44; P<0.01) and depression levels (SMD = −1.85, 95%CI: −3.42 to −0.28; P<0.0001). Furthermore, the results of subgroup analysis indicated that nurse‐led multidisciplinary interventions had significant effects on patients' self‐management ability (SMD = 4.45, 95%CI:2.45 to 6.44; P<0.0001) and quality of life (SMD = 1.01, 95%CI: 0.63 to 1.40; P<0.0001) compared to the control group. Conclusions: Nurse‐led multidisciplinary interventions had strong effects in primary health care, contributing to shorten patients' length of stay in hospital, decrease incidences of complications and reduce the levels of anxiety and depression. Moreover, nurse‐led multidisciplinary interventions also improved patients' self‐management ability and quality of life. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Objective: This paper investigates how the public–private partnership (PPP) functions in the care provision for older people in Guangdong, China, particularly for ageing‐in‐place programs. Methods: Three cities with diversified PPP forms of care provision for older people were chosen as case studies. Focus groups were conducted in these cities for the local authorities and care homes involved in the partnerships. Results: Three forms of PPP, including private sector involvement for the ownership, construction, and operation of the facilities delivering care services, were identified. The public–private co‐constructed and privately run model with greater private sector involvement may lead to higher quality care in one specific program. The publicly constructed and privately run program is widely used in many cities, advancing the expansion of ageing‐in‐place programs in more communities. These PPPs reflect flexible and practical collaboration between the public and private sectors at the local level in the Chinese context. Conclusions: PPP have accelerated the development of a better care system for older people, mainly in terms of more affordable and higher‐quality care options for the public. They are also a feasible solution for the local government due to more cost‐effective and sustainable care provisions than previous publicly provided programs. The specific forms adopted are primarily associated with the scale of home care provision for ageing‐in‐place and the local government's financial capacity. Aims: The aim of this study was to analyse the status, hotspots and trends of research on oral care for the elderly in mainland China in the past 20 years through bibliometrics, which aims to provide new ideas and targets for future clinical work and research. Design: Bibliometric analysis. Methods: Relevant literature was retrieved from China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, China Science and Technology Journal Database, Web of Science and PubMed. NoteExpress, Co‐Occurrence and CiteSpace were used to analyse bibliometric features in terms of year of publication, journal of publication, authors, institution and keywords. Results: A total of 716 related articles were obtained. The number of publications shows an increasing trend over time, only 2017–2021; 309 papers were published, accounting for 43.2% of the total number of publications. A total of 238 articles were published in Science Citation Index journals or Chinese core journals, accounting for 33.2% of the total number of articles. The study of oral health‐related quality of life in the elderly is a hot research topic. There is a lack of research on the elderly living in elderly care facilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: This study aimed to explore the utility of latent profile analysis of illness perception, in comparison to treating illness perception as several dimensions, to predict breast cancer‐related lymphedema risk management behaviours among Chinese breast cancer patients. Methods: This is a 3‐month longitudinal study. From August 2019 to January 2021, patients who recently underwent breast cancer surgery including axillary lymphadenectomy were recruited. Illness perception and risk management behaviours were measured by breast cancer‐related lymphedema specific questionnaires before discharge following surgery (n = 268) and at 3 months postsurgery (n = 213), respectively. Results: Treating illness perception as several dimensions, 'illness coherence' and 'timeline (cyclical)' dimensions were found to be significantly associated with breast cancer‐related lymphedema risk management behaviours. Using the latent profile analysis, two illness perception profiles were identified and significant differences were revealed in breast cancer‐related lymphedema risk management behaviours between them. Overall, illness perception profiles explained smaller amounts of variability in breast cancer‐related lymphedema risk management behaviours than illness perception dimensions. Conclusion: Future studies could combine these two different perspectives of illness perception regarding breast cancer‐related lymphedema into the design of interventions to improve breast cancer‐related lymphedema risk management behaviours. Background: The organizational climate that fosters and supports the implementation of evidence is a key factor influencing the effective implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP). Nurses, being the largest group of medical staff, play a crucial role in EBP implementation. The perception of the climate for EBP implementation among nurses in their organizations is unknown, especially among Chinese nurses. Aims: To clarify the implementation climate of EBP among Chinese nurses and identify the factors associated with the implementation and development of evidence-based nursing practices. Methods: This study employed a descriptive cross-sectional study design. From March 2023 to April 2023, a sample of nurses (n = 1260) from two Tertiary care hospitals in central China were selected and surveyed by self-designed social-demographic questionnaire and Implementation Climate Scale. Multiple linear stepwise regression analysis was conducted to determine the predictors of implementation climate. Results: The nurses achieved a mean ICS score of 59.10 ± 11.22, with mean scores exceeding 3 points for each sub-dimension and item. In the results of multiple linear regression, income satisfaction, implementation of evidence-based nursing practice project(s) within the unit, experience of evidence-based nursing practice during working life, and specific training or courses in evidence-based nursing practice were predictors of ICS. Of these, income satisfaction was the most significant predictor. These factors could explain 17.5% of the total variance in implementation climate. Conclusion: The climate for implementing EBP in Chinese nursing organizations was relatively strong. Nursing managers can enhance the climate for implementing EBP in their organizations by actively improving salary and enhancing EBP-related trainings and practices. Relevance to clinical practice: Understanding nurses' perceptions of the EBP implementation climate in their organizations can help to identify specific barriers and facilitators to the development of EBP and facilitate its successful implementation. Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of an online multidisciplinary weight loss management programme. Methods: Between July 2016 and July 2017 this randomized controlled trial recruited patients in Nanjing, China who were living with type 2 diabetes mellitus and who were obese or overweight and randomized them to online versus conventional groups. All participants were managed by a multidisciplinary team. The experimental group was managed using the Why Wait WeChat Platform for Weight Reduction Management. Results: There were 55 and 52 participants in the online and conventional groups, respectively. The decreases in fasting blood glucose (−4.26 vs. −2.99 mmol/L), 2‐h postprandial blood glucose (−4.48 vs. −2.68 mmol/L) and glycated haemoglobin (−22.11 vs. −6.21 mmol/mol) were more pronounced in the online compared to conventional group (all P < 0.05). After the intervention, self‐management ability parameters, including diet control, foot care and total score, were improved in the online group compared with the conventional group, as well as all indexes of quality of life (all P < 0.05). Conclusion: The online multidisciplinary weight loss management programme improved blood glucose in obese or overweight patients living with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Self‐management ability parameters (including diet control, foot care and total score) and quality of life were improved in the online group compared with the conventional group. Background: Ulcer area is a critical parameter in diabetic foot ulcer assessment but existing methods have deficiencies for routine measurement. Aim: We hypothesized that the Image J‐based Computer Analysis method has a high level of agreement with the commonly used Maximum Length and Width and the Transparent Dressing‐based Square Grid methods and aimed to test the consistency and verify the feasibility of the Image J‐based Computer Analysis method in the routine assessment of ulcers. Methods: Outpatient attendees with diabetic foot ulcers at the Department of Endocrinology of Sun Yat‐sen Memorial Hospital were enrolled between October 2020 and October 2021. The three methods sequentially assessed the area of 65 included ulcers. Results were analysed using one‐way analysis of variance and Bland–Altman plots to perform consistency analysis. Results: The mean ± standard deviation ulcer area measured using the three methods were 14.79 ± 5.39, 14.35 ± 5.26, and 14.30 ± 5.26 cm2, respectively. The measurement differences among the three groups or between any two were not statistically significant. Bland–Altman plots showed good consistency between the Image J‐based Computer Analysis and the other two methods. Conclusion: The Image J‐based Computer Analysis method can be interchanged with the other methods to assess ulcer areas. It is freely accessible, accurate and home‐operable, thus worth consideration by nurses for routine ulcer area assessment. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Aims: To explore predictors of lymphedema self‐management behaviours among Chinese breast cancer survivors based on the Integrated Theory of Health Behaviour Change, and to clarify the interrelationship among these variables. Design: Further analysis of a multicentre cross‐sectional and survey‐based study. Methods: A total of 586 participants with breast cancer were recruited from December 2021 to April 2022 in different cities in China. We used self‐reported questionnaires to collect data. Descriptive analysis, bivariate analysis and structural equation model were performed. Results: The Integrated Theory of Health Behaviour Change is suitable for predicting lymphedema self‐management behaviours. The final structural model showed good model fit. Social support, self‐efficacy and lymphedema knowledge positively affected lymphedema self‐management behaviours, directly and indirectly. Self‐regulation acted as a crucial mediator between these variables and self‐management. The direct path between social support and self‐regulation was not significant. Lymphedema knowledge and social support also influenced self‐management via illness perception, self‐efficacy and self‐regulation, sequentially. These variables explained 55.9% of the variance in lymphedema self‐management behaviours. Conclusions: The modified model based on the Integrated Theory of Health Behaviour Change fitted well in predicting lymphedema self‐management behaviours among breast cancer patients. Lymphedema knowledge, illness perception, self‐efficacy, social support and self‐regulation directly and indirectly influenced lymphedema self‐management behaviours. Impact: This study provides a theoretical basis for the assessment and interventions of lymphedema self‐management behaviours in breast cancer patients. Lymphedema self‐management behaviours should be assessed regularly and comprehensively, taking these predictors into consideration to identify potential barriers. Further research is needed to explore effective interventions integrating these significant predictors. Abstract: Background: Evidence‐based nursing has been highlighted and highly developed in recent decades in mainland China. Nevertheless, little is known about its overall development. Aims: To gain insights on the overall development of evidence‐based nursing in the most recent 5 years and to inform future evidence‐based nursing research in mainland China. Method: Four Chinese and four English databases were searched with the search terms “evidence‐based practice,” “nurse or nursing,” and “China or Chinese” from 2012 to 2016. Bibliometric and co‐word cluster analysis were conducted with the final included publications. Results: A total of 9036 papers published by 13 808 authors in 606 journals were included. Publication numbers were increasing. None of the top ten journals publishing evidence‐based nursing papers were core nursing journals. The research hot spots on evidence‐based nursing in the recent five years were cardiovascular disease, mental health, and complication prevention. However, little attention has been paid to education for evidence‐based nursing. Conclusion: Evidence‐based nursing has penetrated into various nursing branches in mainland China and become a well‐recognized and relatively mature research domain. Background: Case management has been regarded as the front line of necessary change for fragmented healthcare system. Aim: This study proposed a case management intervention that is suitable for Chinese colorectal cancer patients and explored its effectiveness over a 12‐month follow‐up. Methods: A quasi‐experimental study was conducted in an oncology hospital in China. A total of 188 patients were recruited from May 2015 to February 2017; 85 patients in the control group and 80 patients in the intervention group were included in data analysis. The intervention group was managed for 1 year by a case manager who organized the multidisciplinary team, provided regular assessment, a consulting service and referrals. Quality of life, anxiety and depression, symptom distress, treatment adherence and unplanned readmission rates were measured. Results: Repeated measurement ANOVA showed significant intervention and time effects in global quality of life, anxiety and depression, symptom distress and oral chemotherapy adherence. The intervention group showed statistically significantly better overall treatment adherence and lower unplanned readmission rate. Conclusion: Nurse‐led case management was effective in improving psychosocial outcomes, treatment adherence and unplanned readmission rate of colorectal cancer patients. A case management model is feasible and effective in colorectal cancer patients and in hospital‐dominated healthcare systems where primary care is underutilized. Purpose This study aimed to develop and test the psychometric properties of a Professional Nursing Support Scale for patients with cancer in mainland China. Methods: The study was conducted in two phases from January 2017 to January 2020. Phase I involved item generation and developing a preliminary version of Professional Nursing Support Scale through literature review, qualitative interviews, content validity evaluation and a pilot study. Phase II involved psychometric properties testing of the Professional Nursing Support Scale in 700 patients with cancer recruited from four public hospitals in Anhui Province, China. Results: A 49‐item Professional Nursing Support Scale was finally developed. Exploratory factor analysis showed a four‐factor structure of the 49‐item Professional Nursing Support Scale, accounting for 56.95% of variance. Cronbach's α ranged from 0.91 to 0.94 for the four subscales. Confirmatory factor analysis further confirmed the best model fit of four‐factor structure of the Professional Nursing Support Scale. The Professional Nursing Support Scale also showed an acceptable concurrent validity with Supportive Care Needs Scale short form 34 (r = 0.75, p < 0.001) and Psychological Distress Thermometer (r = 0.39, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The Professional Nursing Support Scale is a reliable and valid instrument to assess perceived needs of professional nursing support and support acquisition in relation to the care in Chinese patients with cancer. Aims: To explore how family functioning and family resilience mediate the relationship between disability severity and quality of home‐based care among families with disabled older adults. Methods: A cross‐sectional survey was conducted with 431 families with Uygur and Kazakh disabled older adults in Xinjiang, China, in 2020. The data were collected using the Katz Activity of Daily Living Scale; Mini‐Mental State Examination; Family Adaptation, Partnership, Growth, Affection and Resolve Index Scale; Family Resilience Assessment Scale; and Family Caregiving Consequences Inventory Scale. All mediation effects were estimated in SPSS26.0. Results: Disability severity, family functioning and family resilience were all significantly correlated with home‐based care quality. Disability severity had a 46.16% direct effect on home‐based care quality and a 53.84% indirect effect on home‐based care quality independently and in series through family functioning and family resilience. Conclusions: Disability severity directly affected home‐based care quality and had an indirect influence via family functioning and family resilience. Multidisciplinary care teams should focus on families with disabled older adults and help them improve family functioning and family resilience by implementing targeted interventions, so as to improve home‐based care quality. Aim: This study investigated the effectiveness of an instant message‐based lifestyle and stress management intervention delivered by nurses on cardiovascular disease risk reduction. Methods: In this nonrandomized concurrent controlled trial conducted from March 2013 to September 2013, 164 eligible employees in two companies were assigned to the intervention (n = 83) and control (n = 81) groups based on their worksites. Only participants were blinded to group assignment. All participants received two education sessions during 1 month, and the intervention group also received an instant message‐based lifestyle and stress management intervention for 5 months. The primary outcome was the Framingham Risk Score, and the data were collected at the first month and the sixth month. Results: The final analysis included 80 participants in the intervention group and 76 in the control group. After the intervention, significant intervention effects were found for the mean value and the changes of the Framingham Risk Score and the proportion of participants who improved their diet and exercise (P < 0.05). There were trends for improvement in the proportion of smoking and levels of stress, but statistically significant levels (P > 0.05) were not met. Conclusion: An instant message‐based lifestyle and stress management intervention can reduce cardiovascular disease risk in high‐risk individuals. Background: The paper version of the training assessment was time-consuming and labor-consuming. It is an inevitable trend to change the appraisal method utilizing information technology. This study aimed to realize convenient and rapid management of the whole process of clinical nursing operation technology through information-based training and assessment platform. Methods: Combined with the operation mode of clinical nursing operation skills and set the basic functions of the information platform of clinical nursing operation training and assessment, the information-based training and evaluation platform for clinical nursing operation skills was established. The platform was officially operated in a tertiary level A general hospital in Shandong Province in 2018. Results: The information-based training and assessment platform is composed of Management Center (Computer Terminal) and a client terminal (APP terminal). The computer terminal contains 11 modules, and the APP terminal contains 8 modules. By December 2020, a total of 12,619 nurses had completed the training in nursing operation skills, and a total of 11,986 nurses had completed the examination. The examination results of nursing operation skills of the same nurses in 2018 were significantly higher than those in 2017(P < 0.05), and the error rate was significantly lower (P < 0.05). From 2016 to 2020, the scores of nasal feeding, CPR, and respiratory airbag of N1 level nurses significantly increased after using the information-based training and Assessment Platform (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Based on the information terminal training assessment can realize the management of the whole process of clinical nursing operation technology training and assessment, which is better than the traditional method, and is a very practical and convenient clinical training and assessment method. Aim: The purpose of this study was to translate the Stoma‐quality of life into Chinese and evaluate its psychometric properties in Chinese patients. Background: Quality of life is an important issue for patients with colostomy, and its appropriate and precise measurement is beneficial to promoting better care. The Stoma‐quality of life questionnaire has been widely used; however, the validity and reliability of its Chinese version has not been determined. Design A cross‐sectional validation study was conducted. Methods: We translated the Stoma‐quality of life into Chinese using standardized methods. Then it was psychometrically tested on a convenience sample of 513 patients with colostomy. Construct validity was evaluated via exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. Reliability was measured with Cronbach's alpha and the split‐half Spearman–Brown coefficient. Results: The content validity, the Cronbach's α coefficient and the Spearman–Brown split‐half reliability coefficient indicated adequate validity and reliability. The exploratory factor analysis yielded four common factors, and the cumulative variance contribution rate was 67.5%. Moreover, the confirmatory factor analysis showed a good model fit. Conclusion: This study confirmed that the Chinese version of Stoma‐quality of life is an effective and reliable measurement for evaluating the quality of life of patients with colostomy. Background: Trait emotional intelligence and fear of cancer recurrence could predict quality of life, but the mechanism between the three is poorly understood. Methods: The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between trait emotional intelligence, fear of cancer recurrence and quality of life in patients with breast cancer. A cross‐sectional study was conducted with 215 breast cancer patients recruited from two hospitals in China. Data were collected from December 2018 to April 2019. Questionnaires measured demographic and medical characteristics, trait emotional intelligence, fear of cancer recurrence and quality of life. Pearson correlation analysis and structural equation modelling were conducted to analyse the data. Results: As expected, trait emotional intelligence was positively related to quality of life and negatively correlated with fear of cancer recurrence. Fear of cancer recurrence was negatively associated with quality of life. This relationship between trait emotional intelligence and quality of life was mediated by fear of cancer recurrence. Conclusions: These results shed light on underlying mechanisms by which trait emotional intelligence affects quality of life. Trait emotional intelligence training could reduce fear of cancer recurrence to improve quality of life for cancer patients. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Aim: To design a protocol based on the experiences of long‐term survivors to facilitate resilience for oesophageal cancer patients in rural China. Background: According to the latest Global Cancer Statistics Report, 604,000 new cases of oesophageal cancer were reported, of which over 60% of the disease burden is distributed in China. The incidence of oesophageal cancer in rural China (15.95/100,000) is twice as high as those in urban areas (7.59/100,000). To be sure, resilience can help patients better adapt to post‐cancer life. But universal interventions involving improving the resilience of oesophageal cancer patients have much less been explored, especially for rural patients. Methods: The two‐arm, parallel design, non‐blinded, randomised controlled trial will be implemented in 86 adults diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and will be randomly assigned to the control group or the intervention group via the blocked randomisation. The intervention group will undergo an intervention with one‐on‐one guidance from a nurse while viewing a CD of the experiences of long‐term survivors with oesophageal cancer in rural areas. Every 2 weeks, a theme session will be introduced, and the entire intervention will continue for 12 weeks. Psychosocial variables (resilience, self‐efficacy, coping mode and family support) will be surveyed at baseline, post‐intervention and 3 months after the intervention. The paper complies with the Standard Protocol Items: Recommendations for Intervention Trials 2013 and Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials guidelines for study protocols adapted for designing and reporting parallel group randomised trials. Conclusion: The intervention programme transitions from hospitalisation to discharge, which includes one‐on‐one interventions by medical personnel and a portable CD describing the experiences of long‐term survivors with rural oesophageal cancer. Once the intervention's effectiveness is proven, this protocol will provide psychological support for massive oesophageal cancer patients. Relevance to clinical practice: The intervention programme may be used as an auxiliary therapy to promote patients' postoperative psychological rehabilitation. This programme has the advantages of being cost‐effective, flexible, accessible, and convenient and can be implemented without the limitation of time, place and clinical medical staff. Aim: We aimed to identify the risk factors for delayed discharge in a day surgery centre in west China. Background: Delayed discharge affected by various factors is a key indicator for healthcare quality of day surgery. However, few studies have focused on this issue in developing countries where the day surgery started much later. Design A retrospective case–control design. Method: A random sample of 169 delayed discharge cases and 514 normal discharge cases was randomly selected from 38,021 day surgery cases from May 2011 to May 2019 in a tertiary teaching hospital in west China. Socio‐demographic and clinical characteristics of patients were collected through the hospital electronic database and a chart review. A multivariate logistic regression was conducted to identify the risk factors for delayed discharge. Results: The urban employee basic medical insurance, comorbidity, general anaesthesia, pain, fever, bleeding and metabolic disorder were identified as the risk factors for delayed discharge. Living in the city where the hospital located was a protective factor for delayed discharge. Conclusion: Post‐operative complications including fever, pain, bleeding and metabolic disorder were the most important risk factors for delayed discharge. The pre‐operative prevention, careful monitoring and rapid reactions to post‐operative complications may reduce delayed discharge. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Aim. This paper aimed to examine the current state of nurse safety behavior, and the effect of work engagement on it, and to explore the mediating effect of self-efficacy between work engagement and nurse safety behavior in specialized cancer hospitals. Background. Nurse safety behavior affects the quality of care and outcomes for patients with cancer. The research proves that self-efficacy is associated with work engagement, but the relationship between self-efficacy, work engagement, and nurse safety behavior needs to be clarified. Methods. This study used a convenience sampling method to survey 957 nurses from January to February 2023. The survey included tertiary specialized cancer hospitals in five provinces in China. Sociodemography information, the Work Engagement Scale, the Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Nurse Safety Behavior Scale were used for the survey. A Questionnaire Star program collected all the data automatically. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 24 was employed for Pearson correlation and multiple regression analysis to examine the association between work engagement, self-efficacy, and nurse safety behavior. Structural equation models were built using Analysis of Moment Structures version 24.0 software. Results. The results showed that the nurse safety behavior was at a high level in specialized cancer hospitals. There was a significant positive relationship between the variables work engagement, self-efficacy, and nurse safety behavior with coefficients ranging from 0.244 to 0.564. The results of structural equation modeling revealed that self-efficacy partially mediated the effect between work engagement and nurse safety behavior, accounting for 25.3% of the total effect. Conclusion. Self-efficacy mediates the relationship between work engagement and nurse safety behavior, and by increasing self-efficacy, nurse safety behavior can be improved, thus ensuring patient safety. Aims: This study investigated self‐care activities and identified their related factors in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: A cross‐sectional study was conducted in Guangzhou, China, between September 2016 and February 2017, involving 202 Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Measures included the Summary of Diabetes Self‐Care Activities Questionnaire and Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire. Results: Self‐care activities in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were suboptimal overall. Foot care and blood sugar testing were the self‐care activities that were performed the least. One fifth of patients smoked. Some subscales of illness perceptions, receiving health education on diabetes, employment status, education level, body mass index, age and time since type 2 diabetes mellitus diagnosis, were related to self‐care activities in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Conclusion: Health‐care providers and nurses should encourage greater engagement in self‐care activities in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, especially foot care and blood sugar testing. Aim: The aim of this work is to test the mediator role of patient safety behaviour between safety culture and safety performance among nurses. Methods: This cross‐sectional study was carried out between September and December 2017 in the nursing units of 10 primary hospitals, two secondary hospitals and two tertiary hospitals in Anhui Province, China. Results: The study participants comprised 79 RNs from primary hospitals, 147 RNs from secondary hospitals and 242 RNs from tertiary hospitals. Most were female (97.6%) and married (73.1%), and their ages ranged from less than 25 years to retirement age. The sample included nurses working in several departments, including medicine (27.1%), surgery (14.3%), emergency (11.5%) and ICU (9%). Structural equation model analysis results showed that espoused values directly affected safety performance, and practised values affected safety performance through safety behaviour. Conclusion: Our hypothetical model noted that safety behaviour is a positive mediating factor of practised safety values affecting safety performance, suggesting that Chinese nursing managers should construct a patient safety culture that is guided and driven by appropriate values, which will ultimately be externalized as nurses' daily behaviour. Aim: This study aimed to explore the experiences of family caregivers interacting with people with dementia. Background: A majority of people with mild‐to‐moderate dementia live at home with family caregivers. This interaction creates positive experiences and challenges for these caregivers. Design Descriptive phenomenological qualitative inquiry guided this study. Methods: This qualitative study involved semi‐structured interviews with the caregivers of people with mild‐to‐moderate dementia (n = 10). Data were collected from June to September 2018, and then data were thematically analysed. Results: Six categories of themes were identified from the interviews: (1) unexpected things often happen; (2) positive coping strategies; (3) sense of accomplishment because people with dementia actively participate in activities; (4) sense of frustration because of the reluctance of people with dementia to participate in activities; (5) hope for the happiness of people with dementia; and (6) want to have their own life. Conclusions: This study reveals that caregivers could positively interact with people with dementia through creating opportunities and arranging meaningful activities. Future research should focus on family management and training on how to help caregivers interact effectively with people with dementia. SUMMARY STATEMENT: What is already known about this topic? Objective: Health literacy is an important predictor of health outcomes. The Health Literacy Questionnaire has been widely adopted to measure health literacy and has been translated into multiple languages including Chinese. This study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of the simplified Chinese Health Literacy Questionnaire. Methods: Data were obtained from a sample of 362 Chinese immigrants from Chinese community organizations in New South Wales, Australia. Statistical analyses include descriptive and exploratory factor analyses. Results: A seven‐factor solution was derived from 39 of the original 44 items, all with acceptable to excellent internal consistency but differing from the original construction. The health literacy subscale scores were negatively associated with age and with age at immigration, but positively associated with duration of stay (years) in Australia, better English proficiency and current employment. Differing interpretations of the questions based on Chinese culture could possibly explain the variations between the two versions. Conclusion: The simplified Chinese Health Literacy Questionnaire measures some central concepts of health literacy well. However, the questionnaire may require further development, especially in linguistic and cultural aspects. SUMMARY STATEMENT: What is already known about this topic? Objectives: This study aims to understand the current situation and multiple factors affecting the core competence specializing in the maternal, neonatal and under‐five nursing in China. Background: Highly skilled nurses and midwives are essential worldwide for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, especially in low‐ and middle‐income countries like China, due to the overwhelming COVID‐19 crisis. Method: The 890 nurses and midwives from 12 hospitals were investigated in this cross‐sectional study, with two questionnaires: the sociodemographic information and competency inventory for the registered nurses. Results: The participants reported a mean total score of 193.78 (±42.19) out of 220 and lowest in critical thinking and research ability (3.01 ± 0.82). The professional title, level, marital status, relationship quality, highest qualification, experience in specialist nurse training, participation in scientific research projects and publishing papers were the influencing factors (P <.05). Conclusions: The respondents' core competence needs improvement, especially critical regarding thinking and research ability. In addition, marriage and good or excellent relationship quality are factors that can potentially improve competence. Implications for Nursing Management: Targeted interventions for higher core nursing competence need to be implemented, especially focusing on nurses' marital status and emotional support from partners. Aims: To examine the differences in decisional conflict, decision regret, self‐stigma and quality of life among breast cancer survivors who chose different surgeries, as well as the effects of decisional conflict, decision regret and self‐stigma on quality of life. Design: Observational study. Methods: Paper and online surveys were used to collect data from March to September 2020. The Chinese version of the Decisional Conflict Scale, Decision Regret Scale, Self‐Stigma Form and Functional Assessment of Cancer Treatment‐B were used to measure the corresponding health outcomes for breast cancer survivors who chose different surgeries from three university‐affiliated hospitals. One‐way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation coefficient and hierarchical multiple regression analysis were used for data analysis. Results: Among the 448 participants, only 21% chose breast conservative surgery, while 79% chose mastectomy with or without reconstruction. Women who chose mastectomy with reconstruction reported higher decisional conflict (p =.028) and more decision regret (p =.013) than women who chose breast conservative surgery; women who chose mastectomy without reconstruction indicated higher decisional conflict (p =.015), more decision regret (p <.001), and higher self‐stigma (p =.034) than women who chose breast conservative surgery. Decisional conflict (r = −.430), decision regret (r = −.495), and self‐stigma (r = −.561) were negatively correlated with quality of life. After controlling for sociodemographic and clinical variables, decisional conflict and decision regret explained 19.7% and self‐stigma explained 12.9% of the variance in quality of life. Conclusion: Decisional conflict, decision regret and self‐stigma vary according to different breast surgeries and are greatly associated with the quality of life of breast cancer survivors. Impact Future studies are warranted to investigate the decision‐making process and the underlying reasons for surgical choices. Decision support strategies pre‐surgery are needed to inform women about the risks and benefits of surgery options. Aims and objectives. To describe nurses' perceptions concerning their professional practice environment in mainland China and identify factors associated with these views. Background. Globally, the environments in which nurses work influence the quality of nursing practice and health care. Design. A cross-sectional descriptive survey using both paper- and online-based delivery modes was used. Method. A convenience sampling method was used. The survey questionnaire was composed of sociodemographic items and the 38-item Chinese version of Professional Practice Environment survey. The content of the paper-based questionnaire was identical to the online survey. Pearson's chi-square test was conducted to compare the demographic characteristics of these two data sets. Descriptive statistics analysis included frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation. Multiple linear regression analysis using the Backwards method was applied to identify independent predictors of each subscale of the 38-item Chinese version of Professional Practice Environment. Results. A total of 573 questionnaires were analysed. The mean score of each subscale of the 38-item Chinese version of Professional Practice Environment in this study ranged from 2-66-3-05. All subscales except work motivation (3-05, standard deviation: 0-44) scored less than 3-0. Areas rated as most in need of improvement included control over practice, interpersonal interaction, supportive leadership and handling conflict, and staff relationships with physicians and autonomy. Conclusion. This study has identified nurses' perspectives regarding their workplaces in contemporary China. These data have provided an important baseline for developing and implementing culturally appropriate strategies to improve the working environment of Chinese nurses. Relevance to clinical practice. A supportive and enabling work environment promotes professional development and the safety and quality of health care. Addressing these factors is important in optimising work place environments. Aim: To identify factors influencing readiness for hospital discharge among Chinese patients having undergone a laryngectomy and to provide evidence for developing future processes. Background: Laryngectomy changes the functional and psychological state of laryngeal cancer patients considerably. However, influencing factors for discharge readiness among laryngectomy patients have hardly been investigated. Methods: A descriptive, cross‐sectional design was used with Meleis' transitions theory as a guiding framework. This survey‐based study was performed with 212 laryngeal cancer patients undergoing laryngectomy at a regional tertiary medical centre between August 2012 and September 2013. Results: Quality of discharge teaching and having a designated caregiver after discharge were found to influence patients' readiness for discharge. Conclusion: Clinical interventions such as nursing assessment on discharge readiness, assistance to coordinate postdischarge support and individualized follow‐up planning should be integrated into future clinical processes in China. However, further investigations are needed to systematically align relevant results before clinical practices in Chinese settings are eventually changed. Aim: The aim of the study was to examine whether patient–provider communication interacts with treatment outcomes to influence patients' risk perception. Background: Medical uncertainties and risks are among the most serious problems faced by patients. This is exacerbated by communication failure in patient–provider relationships and poor treatment outcomes. However, we do not know how communication and treatment outcomes shape patients' risk perception and concern about uncertainty. Design The study is a two‐by‐two between‐subjects design. Methods: Two studies were conducted and data were collected in 2019. Each study used a different research design and different samples: Study 1 used a scenario experiment with 120 undergraduate students; and Study 2 surveyed 200 inpatients in clinical settings. Results: The convergent results found a significant interaction between patient–provider communication and treatment outcome on the perception of medical risks among the participants. Conclusion: Patient–provider communication interacts with treatment outcome to influence patients' perceived risk about uncertainties for healthcare. Clinicians and nurses should be aware of the effects of patient–provider communication on patients' risk perception in their concerns about the uncertainties of treatment and pay much more attention to good healthcare relationship building in addition to the improvement of objective treatment outcome. Background: Education for asthmatic children in the outpatient department is insufficient. Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of a nurse‐led education pathway, a standard education programme, on children with asthma. Methods: One hundred and eighty participants enrolled and were randomly assigned to either the control group or the intervention group. The intervention group received predetermined step‐by‐step education sessions based on the self‐designed education pathway, while the control group received usual care. Asthma control, health‐related quality of life, and health‐care utilization measures were taken at baseline and at follow‐up visits between February 2016 and May 2018. Results: Significantly higher scores for health‐related quality of life and inhaler technique at the third‐month visit and asthma control test at the sixth‐month visit were seen in the intervention group. The numbers of unscheduled physician visits and school absences were lower in the intervention group than in the control group within 6 months. However, no significant differences were observed in emergency department visits and hospitalizations. Conclusion: The nurse‐led education pathway could be considered effective for children with asthma visiting the outpatient department. SUMMARY STATEMENT: What is already known about this topic? Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate incidences of inappropriate initial urinary catheter placements within an older inpatient cohort. Methods: A total of 200 inpatients that received urinary catheterizations within 24 hours of admission were recruited for this observational study. The key demographic and clinical factors were recorded. Adverse outcomes were assessed by examining incidences of catheter‐associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) during hospitalization, after transfer to skilled nursing facilities, second, duration of hospital stay and by scoring changes on the Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living. Correlative relationships between demographic data and clinical factors with adverse outcomes were analyzed. Results: Inappropriate initial urinary catheterization in our cohort was approximately 39%. This was associated with elevated Charlson comorbidity index scores and increased dependency, with correlations to medical diagnosis. We also observed that the primary rationale for the procedure (inappropriate catheterization) was for neurogenic bladder (where intermittent catheterization was indicated) and in 'convenience‐of‐care' catheterizations. Inappropriate catheter placement was ultimately associated with an elevated CAUTI at point of discharge, with transfers to skilled nursing facilities and also with an increased duration of hospital stay. Conclusions: Inappropriate catheter placement was prevalence in southwestern China and associated with adverse outcomes. SUMMARY STATEMENT: What is already known about this topic? Urinary catheterization is a common procedure for geriatric in‐patients, yet up to half of such placements are inappropriately performed.Reducing inappropriate urinary catheter use is key to minimizing adverse outcomes such as urinary tract infection and genitourinary trauma.Although guidelines for in‐patient catheterization have been developed, there are no uniform standardized national guidelines in China that could advise physicians on the placement of inpatient urinary catheters.What this paper adds? INTRODUCTION Nursing staff's assistance for smokers to quit smoking can increase the rate of quitting. The smoking cessation help can be affected by many factors. This study surveyed the use of the 5As (Asking, Advising, Assessing, Assisting, Arranging) approach to support smoking cessation by the nursing staff in Chongqing, China, and analyzed the corresponding influencing factors. METHODS A stratified random cluster sampling method was used to select nursing staff from 8 tertiary hospitals, 5 secondary hospitals, 12 community health centers, and 35 township health centers in different geographical regions of Chongqing. A questionnaire survey was conducted among the nursing staff to investigate their participation in smoking cessation. Binary logistic regression analysis was employed to analyze the influencing factors of smoking cessation 5As behavior of the nursing staff. RESULTS The 1669 participants were 44 males (2.6%) and 1625 females (97.4%), with an average age of 37.00 ± 10.89 years. Among the participants, 55.2% were from tertiary hospitals, 23.2% from secondary hospitals, 14.2% from township health centers, and 7.4 from community health centers. The often or always used behaviors were: Asking, 69.2%; Advising, 53.0%; Assessing, 39.5%; Assisting, 33.7%; and Arranging, 25.1%. The factors that affected all the 5As were: smoking cessation training (AOR=1.60; 95% CI: 1.22-2.11), knowledge of smoking cessation guidelines (AOR=1.75; 95% CI: 1.32-2.32) and the use of smoking cessation Apps (AOR=1.50; 95% CI: 1.09--2.06), and smokers' willingness to quit (AOR=2.20; 95% CI: 1.60-3.02). CONCLUSIONS Smoker's motivation to quit smoking and nurses' knowledge of tobacco cessation resources affected nurses' participation in smoking control behavior. While encouraging smokers to quit smoking, clinical nursing staff should be provided with related resources to advocate smoking cessation. Guided by the Chinese Clinical Tobacco Cessation Guidelines, smoking control knowledge and skills training should be provided for nursing staff to increase their positive attitude towards smoking control, so as to promote their active participation. Aim: The aim of this paper was to translate the English version of the Inpatient Dignity Scale into Mandarin and to test the psychometric properties of the Mandarin version of the Inpatient Dignity Scale. Design: This research is a cross‐sectional survey, using convenience sampling. Methods: The English version of the Inpatient Dignity Scale was translated into Mandarin Chinese. From June–August 2020, 736 inpatients from 50 tertiary hospitals in Guangzhou were recruited to assess the psychometric attributes of the Inpatient Dignity Scale. Results: The Mandarin version of the Inpatient Dignity Scale consists of expectation and satisfaction subscales. It differs from the English language version, as the expectation subscale includes three dimensions and the satisfaction subscale includes two dimensions. The total Cronbach alpha coefficient of the expectation subscale and the satisfaction subscale were.820 and.965, respectively, and the split‐half reliability of the expectation subscale and the satisfaction subscale were 0.740 and 0.928, respectively, indicating good internal consistency and effectiveness. Aim: This study aimed to develop a tool to measure paediatric specialist nurses' core competencies and examine the scale's validity and reliability. Design: An exploratory quantitative study. Methods: This study was performed in April 2022 with 302 paediatric specialist nurses in mainland China. Items were created through a literature review, a qualitative interview, and the Delphi method. The data were evaluated using descriptive statistics, independent sample t‐test, explanatory factor analysis, Pearson correlation coefficient, Cronbach's alpha coefficient and split‐half reliability. Results: The final scale consisted of five factors and 32 items. The factors were communication, coordination and judgement abilities; professional technology mastery ability; specialist knowledge mastery ability; medical‐related processes; and evidence‐based nursing competencies. The explained total variance of the five factors was 62.216%. The scale‐level and item‐level CVI of this scale was 1.00, and the mean CVR of the total scale was 0.788. The Pearson correlation coefficients of each dimension and the total dimension of the scale was 0.709–0.892, and within each dimension, it was 0.435–0.651. Background: General hospitals in China have been establishing General Practice Departments (GPD). Although General Practice Nurses (GPNs) are an important part of this medical system, their training has not been synchronised. This study explored the working status of nurses in GPDs in general hospitals in Beijing to provide a theoretical basis for the training and development of GPNs in China. Methods: We conducted in-depth, individual interviews with outpatient nurses at 19 hospitals in Beijing between March and April 2021. We employed a qualitative analysis to interpret participant narratives and used a codebook thematic analysis to analyse the interview data and extract themes. Results: The analysis revealed four themes: (i) a lack of full-time GPNs in GPDs of most tertiary hospitals, (ii) the inability of GPNs to fully express their potential and skills owing to their limited roles, (iii) insufficient standardised patient education provided by nurses in GPDs, and (iv) a lack of systematic and relevant training for nurses working in general practice settings. Conclusions: To promote the development of GPNs, GPDs in general hospitals in China should hire full-time GPNs, define their job duties in alignment with their values, and provide standardised training to strengthen their core competencies. Objective: The purpose of this study is to construct an organ system-centered undergraduate nursing professional training model and explore its application effect. Methods: This study is divided into two steps. In the early stage, literature review and expert consultation were used to establish the training mode (curriculum and assessment standard) of nursing undergraduate specialty based on organ system reform. Secondly, a cross-sectional survey method was used to investigate the training quality of nursing students who graduated from Jinzhou Medical University from 2007 to 2017 under this model. Results: A five-module curriculum system was established, including general courses, public basic courses, professional education courses, expanding elective courses and concentrated practical teaching. Under the teaching reform of organ system, the nursing graduates of Jinzhou Medical University, who are mainly employed in public hospitals, are generally not satisfied with their jobs, salaries, contents and prospects. Their overall satisfaction with their alma mater is very high; Graduates have certain independent core competence; Employers are basically satisfied with graduates. Background: Value-Based Care (VBC) is increasingly recognized as a pivotal approach in healthcare, aiming to improve patient outcomes while optimizing costs. Understanding the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of nurses towards VBC is crucial for its successful implementation. Methods: This study adopts a multi-center, online, cross-sectional design to survey registered nurses across China to evaluate their KAP related to VBC.The survey was disseminated through the platform Wenjuanxing (SoJump) targeting professional nursing groups, utilizing a structured questionnaire on a five-point Likert scale. Result: The survey received a total of 1,825 valid responses from 82 hospitals across 18 provinces, with the majority coming from female nurses (95.02%), and a significant portion of the nurses having 10–19 years of clinical experience. 41.32% of the participants indicated they were familiar with Value-Based Care (VBC), and 68% expressed a willingness to participate in relevant training. There was a significant difference (p < 0.001) in the reported incidence of low-value services between nurses' self-reports and their reports about colleagues, with a lower incidence reported by nurses themselves. The highest incidence of low-value services reported by nurses themselves was "Unnecessary Lab testing" (6.52%), while the highest incidence reported by nurses about their colleagues was "Insufficient Treatment" (12.75%). Conclusion: This survey showed that Chinese nurses have a relatively low level of understanding of value-based healthcare, and that low-value medical practices may be prevalent in China. Background: Promoting patient participation stands as a global priority in nursing care. Currently, there is a lack of a standardized tool to assess the culture of patient participation from the perspective of nurses in China. Aims: To translate and examine the validity and reliability of the Patient Participation Culture Tool for healthcare workers (PaCT-HCW) on general hospital wards in Chinese nursing context. Methods: A cross-sectional research study was conducted among 812 nurses. Brislin's recommendations were adhered to during the translation of the scale. Validity was assessed using construct validity, content validity, and face validity. Split-half reliability, test–retest reliability, and internal consistency reliability were used to evaluate dependability. The study was guided and reported following the STROBE checklist and recommendations for reporting the results of studies of instrument and scale development and testing. Results: The Chinese version of PaCT-HCW (the PaCT-HCW-C) exhibits good face validity and content validity. A rigorous exploratory factor analyse verified a six-factor (competence, support, perceived lack of time, information sharing and dialogue, response to questions and acceptance of a new role) scale structure with a cumulative variance contribution of the factors with 44 items of 68.840%. With a Cronbach's α coefficient of 0.962, split-half reliability of 0.866, and intraclass correlation coefficients of 0.989, the instrument demonstrates great reliability. Confirmatory factor analysis results validated the consistency of the six factors with the structure of the PaCT-HCW-C scale. Conclusions: The 44-item PaCT-HCW-C is a valid and reliable instrument with satisfactory psychometric properties. It could serve as a tool for assessing the effectiveness of international programs aimed at fostering patient participation from the perspective of nurses, while also providing insights from China's practical experiences. Introduction: Venous thromboembolism (VTE), including deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, is a common and potentially fatal post-surgery complication. Research has shown that 50% of VTE causes are intraoperative, with the risk of occurrence highest during and immediately post-surgery. Therefore, strategies for early assessment and prevention should be established. Objective: To identify optimal equipment selection, compression protocols, and strategies for complication prevention and management during intraoperative intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC), this study aims to synthesize the best available evidence. The objective is to inform accurate risk assessment and facilitate early mechanical prophylaxis against venous thrombosis. Methods: The Practical Application to Clinical Evidence model proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute was utilized. Indicators were identified using the available best evidence from January 2023 to October 2023, and a baseline review was conducted. Negative factors were identified based on clinical evidence-based practice. The implementation rates of different indicators before (n = 372) and after (n = 405) evidence-based practice, the incidence rates of intraoperative IPC-related adverse events and VTE, and the risk of venous thrombosis before (n = 50) and after (n = 50) practice were identified and compared. Furthermore, medical staff's knowledge of best practices for intraoperative IPC was assessed through pre- and post-intervention surveys involving 109 operating room personnel. Results: All review indicators significantly improved (P < 0.01) after the evidence-based practice, and 9 reached 100%. Two intraoperative venous thrombosis events occurred before the evidence-based practice, with an incidence rate of 0.53%; no intraoperative venous thrombosis event occurred after the evidence-based practice, with no significant difference (X2 = 2.171, P = 0.141 > 0.05). However, there were significant differences in intraoperative venous blood hemodynamics before and after the practice (P < 0.05). Moreover, 9 IPC-related adverse events, including 4 cases of skin pressure, 3 cases of skin allergy, and 2 cases of lower limb circulation disorders, were reported before the evidence-based practice, with an incidence rate of 2.4%. Notably, no intraoperative IPC-associated adverse events occurred after the evidence-based practice(X2 = 9.913, P < 0.01). Meanwhile, the score of comprehension of the standard utilization of IPC for preventing venous thrombosis by medical staff in the operating room was 93.34 ± 3.64 after the evidence-based practice, which was higher than that (67.55 ± 5.45) before the evidence-based practice. Overall, the clinical practice was significantly improved the evidence-based practice. Conclusions: Applying intraoperative IPC utilization standards based on the best evidence in clinical practice effectively reduces the intraoperative IPC-associated adverse event rate and the risks of intraoperative venous thrombosis. It also improves the execution rates and compliance with mechanical prevention standards in the operating room by medical staff. Future research should prioritize the development and refinement of best clinical practices for intraoperative venous thrombosis prevention, with a particular emphasis on the integration of mechanical prophylaxis strategies. Objective: To explore the effect of Balint Group in improving stress, negative mood and empathy of psychiatric nurses. Method: In March 2022-March 2023, 150 psychiatric nurses from four hospitals in Lanzhou were selected for the study, randomly grouped into experimental group and control groups (75 per group), the experimental group participated the Balint Group activities biweekly, the control group only attended mental health knowledge lectures. Job stress, negative emotion and empathy of the two groups before and after the intervention were evaluated and compared by using job stressor Scale, coping style Assessment Scale, self-assessment scale for depression, self-assessment Scale for anxiety and Jefferson Empathy Scale. Results: After intervention, the job stressor scale and coping style evaluation of nurses in the two groups were significantly decreased, and the experimental group was lower than the control group (P < 0.05). The depression and anxiety of nurses in the two groups were significantly improved, and the experimental group was better than the control group (P < 0.05). The differences in the total score and dimensions of Jefferson Empathy scale in the experimental group after intervention were higher than those in the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Balint group activities can effectively relieve the stress, depression and anxiety of psychiatric nurses, and improve the ability of empathy at work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: To describe the changes in moderate‐to‐late preterm infants' (MLPIs) growth during 12 months of corrected age (CA) and to examine the predictive role of NICU‐related stress, postpartum depression trajectory and family coping ability on the physical developmental trajectory of MLPIs. Design: A prospective longitudinal study. Methods: There were 237 mother–infant dyads with at least two follow‐up data records included. General characteristics and NICU‐related stress were recorded from medical records at baseline. Infants' physical growth was measured at 40 weeks, 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months CA during outpatient follow‐up. Maternal postpartum depressive symptoms and family coping ability were assessed by questionnaires at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months CA and 1 month CA respectively. We investigated the modifiable factors inside and outside of NICU on the trajectories of physical growth in the first year in MLPIs, mainly by using latent growth curve models with time‐varying covariates. Results: The curved trajectories of weight, length and head circumference in the first year in MLPIs demonstrated gradually slowed growth rates and these infants were above the WHO growth standards for the same age and sex. The latent growth curve models indicated that more NICU‐related stress was negatively associated with the weight and length at 40 weeks CA, and family coping ability (parent–child relationship) at 1 month CA was associated with the growth rate of weight. Besides, more NICU‐related stress predicted faster length growth rate. The infants of mothers who were in the group of high‐level postpartum depression trajectory had a slower growth rate of head circumference. Conclusions: Our study identified the modifiable factors along the care continuum influencing the trajectory of MLPIs' physical growth. Nurses should receive more training about infant stress measurement and family‐centred care to work in partnership with parents so that MLPIs can reach their full developmental potential. Also, multidisciplinary interventions including stress reduction strategies, close psychological monitoring and education improving parent–infant relationships should be further developed to achieve optimizing growth in the first year of MLPIs. Implications for the Profession and/or Patient Care: It is recommended that nurses pay attention to the long‐term physical growth status of MLPIs, and closely support their families. Quantifying NICU‐related stress and developing reduction strategies should be the priority for clinical staff during hospitalization. After discharge, persistent screening of depressive symptoms, psychological intervention and education about the parent–child relationship need to be included in the follow‐up visits. Aims and Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the current status of the core competencies and self‐directed learning ability of diabetes specialist nurses and to explore the relationship between these core competencies and their self‐directed learning ability. Design: A cross‐sectional survey design was used. Methods: This cross‐sectional study was conducted via a web‐based questionnaire platform in China from January 14 to April 24, 2023. The survey included a general information questionnaire, a diabetes specialist nurses' core competencies self‐assessment scale, and a nursing staff's self‐directed learning ability evaluation scale. The data was collected online. Descriptive, correlation and multiple linear regression analyses were conducted using SPSS 26.0 software. Results: 118 diabetes specialist nurses from 11 cities participated in this study. A positive correlation was observed between the core competencies of diabetes specialist nurses and their self‐directed learning ability. The characteristics affecting the core competencies of diabetes specialist nurses included age, participation in external learning and communication and self‐directed learning. Conclusions: The training of diabetes specialist nurses can focus on core competencies, and the ability to self‐direct learning can be used as an entry point to customize feasible theoretical and practical courses. The training system can further improve diabetes specialist nurses' core competencies and self‐directed learning abilities. Relevance to Clinical Practice: A reference can be established that nursing managers and nursing educators can use to develop training programs for specialist nurses by validating the link between their core competencies and self‐directed learning skills. Aims: To generate pre‐hospital symptom networks, explore core, bridge and sentinel symptoms, identify pre‐hospital symptom clusters and analyse relationship between influencing factors and symptom clusters in decompensated cirrhosis patients. Design: A cross‐sectional study design using the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology checklist. Methods: Demographical, physiological, psychological and sociological characteristics and the pre‐hospital symptoms of 292 decompensated cirrhotic patients were collected from October 2021 to March 2023 in China. Frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, independent samples t‐tests, one‐way analysis of variance, exploratory factor analysis, multiple stepwise regression analysis and network analysis were used for data analysis. Results: 'I don't look like myself' and itching were core and bridge symptoms, while bloating and lack of energy were sentinel symptoms in decompensated cirrhotic patients. Monthly family income, anxiety, depression, social support and disease duration influenced the neuropsychological symptom cluster, with worrying as the strongest predictor symptom. Influential factors for cirrhosis‐specific symptom cluster included Child‐Pugh class, monthly family income, disease duration, anxiety and depression, with itching being the strongest predictor symptom. Monthly family income, disease duration and depression were influential factors for gastrointestinal symptom cluster, with loss of appetite as the strongest predictor symptom. Conclusions: Neuropsychological, cirrhosis‐specific and gastrointestinal symptom clusters were formed in decompensated cirrhotic patients. Through network analysis, direct connections between symptoms, symptom clusters and their influencing factors were revealed, thereby offering clinicians a foundation for effectively managing patients' pre‐hospital symptoms. Impact: Decompensated cirrhosis patients commonly have multiple symptoms, while the management of pre‐hospital symptoms is often suboptimal. This study identified neuropsychological, cirrhosis‐specific, gastrointestinal symptom clusters and recognized core, bridge and sentinel symptoms in these patients. It also revealed the most prominent symptoms within each cluster. This provides insight into the hierarchy of symptoms, improving symptom management in decompensated cirrhosis. Background: Constipation is common in elderly inpatients with intracerebral hemorrhage. This study aimed to construct a model for predicting the risk of constipation in elderly inpatients with intracerebral hemorrhage and to provide reference for formulating targeted intervention measures. Methods: Elderly patients with intracerebral hemorrhage who were treated in the department of Neurosurgery of a third-class hospital in Suzhou from January 2018 to September 2023 were included. Clinical data of patients with and without constipation were compared. Logistic regression analysis was used to explore the influencing factors of constipation in elderly patients with intracerebral hemorrhage, and R software was used to construct a line chart model to verify its predictive effect. Results: A total of 504 elderly patients with intracerebral hemorrhage were included. The incidence of constipation in elderly patients with cerebral hemorrhage was 63.9%. Logistic regression analysis showed that GCS score (OR = 1.094, 95%CI: 1.019∼1.174), hypertension (OR = 2.911, 95%CI: 1.797∼4.715), use of dehydrating agent (OR = 3.794, 95%CI: 2.337∼6.158), surgical treatment (OR = 3.986, 95%CI: 2.339∼6.793), use of sedative drugs (OR = 4.212, 95%CI:2.386-7.435), and limb paralysis (OR = 6.313, 95%CI:3.689∼10.803) were the independent risk factors for constipation in elderly patients with intracerebral hemorrhage. The area under the ROC curve of the prediction model was 0.872 (95%CI: 0.8401∼0.9033), the best critical value was 0.705, the sensitivity was 0.748, and the specificity was 0.857. Conclusion: The constipation risk prediction model of elderly patients with cerebral hemorrhage has good differentiation and calibration, which is helpful for health care providers to identify the risk of constipation in elderly patients with intracerebral hemorrhage.
