This is an exploratory descriptive study which aims at detecting critical aspects of the manuscripts submitted to REBEn (Brazilian Journal of Nursing) for publishing. Data was collected through the evaluation instruments used by the Editorial Board of REBEn on the selection of articles for the journal. Thirty-two evaluation reports, which represent 50% of the articles published in one volume of the journal, were analyzed. Results showed that most of the articles accepted for publishing were deficient, needed correction and that the authors needed guidance regarding requirements for publishing, such as peer review. Another problem detected was that the authors of the articles submitted did not seem to know the norms of presentation of the journal.

The study aimed to conduct a literature review as a step of the development of a new questionnaire about the nursing workers' perception of job factors that may lead to musculoskeletal symptoms. An information synthesis was achieved by collecting data from studies that fitted the search criteria. The results showed that despite the existence of several job factors related to musculoskeletal symptoms, no specific questionnaire that evaluates this relationship was found. Therefore, this literature review presents important topics for developing the first questionnaire to analyze work activities that may contribute to pain and discomfort among nursing personnel. Aim: This study aims to identify the working conditions of Brazilian nursing professionals and the risk factors for these professionals to become infected by coronavirus disease. Background: Understanding the factors that affected nursing professionals during the pandemic can support better nursing management. Design: This is a quantitative, cross‐sectional survey study. Methods: Data collection was carried out between February and March 2022 in Brazil. All nursing professionals registered in the national database received by e‐mail the study instrument with the data collection variables: professionals' sociodemographic and comorbid, professional and institutional characteristics, and professionals' health conditions and disease‐related aspects for COVID‐19. Results: Four thousand eight hundred sixty‐two nursing professionals reported a lack of personal protective equipment for patient care, and 4424 were infected by coronavirus disease. The risk factors to become infected were having cardiovascular disease, being under 60 years of age, living in the northern region, using public transportation, working in a hospital, an emergency department or reference institution for COVID‐19, living with an infected person and lack of respirators or waterproof aprons. Conclusion: Multiple risk factors for infection with SARS‐CoV‐2 were demonstrated for the nursing professionals during the pandemic, highlighting current and future pandemics factors that are modifiable in a worthwhile time frame to minimize nurses' infection risks, such as inadequate working conditions associated with lack of essential personal protective equipment. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? The health‐care team is essential in managing COVID‐19, but it has been directly affected by the pandemic. What this paper adds? Multiple risk factors for infection with SARS‐CoV‐2, modifiable or not, were demonstrated for these nursing professionals. Aim: Aim of this study is to identify signs and symptoms associated with identifying critically ill patients by rapid triage assessment performed by nurses in an emergency department. Background: In some emergency services, the immediate assessment of critically ill patients occurs before opening the hospital formal registration and it is based on the nurse's experience. Studies on the topic are essential to improve this process. Design This is a cross‐sectional, quantitative study. Methods: This study was conducted in a Brazilian emergency department in 2017. Adult patients who presented potentially life‐threatening symptoms underwent rapid triage to determine the medical urgency. Those identified as being critically ill were classified as high priority and streamed to the emergency room. Results: A total of 154 (84.6%) patients were classified as high priority from the total of 182 evaluations. Altered state of consciousness (35.2%) and altered skin perfusion (25.3%) were frequently identified. Signs and symptoms associated with identifying critically ill patients by rapid triage were alterations in ventilation (OR 6.09; p = 0.028), neurological dysfunction (OR 44.96; p < 0.001) and pain (OR 5.80; p = 0.004). Conclusion: Nurses should value neurological and ventilation alterations and pain in patients during rapid triage, since these signs and symptoms are associated with high care priority. Research carried out in different countries highlights the importance of triage and risk classification systems, especially in the context of overcrowding in the emergency department.The time that a critically ill patient waits to receive effective treatment is one of the most significant predictors of unsatisfactory clinical outcomes.There are very few studies which have utilized a simple quick‐look method of triage in relation to other studies which commonly used a five‐level triage system in the emergency department. Aim: To estimate the incidence rates of surgical site infection and identify the independent effect of perioperative hypothermia on the incidence of this type of infection in patients undergoing abdominal surgery. Background: Around the world, surgical site infection is a frequent complication in surgical patients, mainly causing increased morbidity and mortality rates and health service costs. Design A prospective cohort study. Methods: The 484 patients were recruited from a large private philanthropic hospital in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, from July 2016 to May 2017. Crude and adjusted models were constructed for the hypothermia indicators to assess the effect of this exposure on surgical site infection. Results: The incidence rate of surgical site infection was 20.25% (n = 98). The attributable fraction to exposed to hypothermia was >40%. A greater probability of developing surgical site infection (relative risk = 1.89) was found for patients who experienced body temperatures <36.0°C (from entry time into the operating room until the end of the surgery) for more than five hypothermic episodes or longer than 75 min. Conclusion: Perioperative hypothermia was an independent risk factor for surgical site infection. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? Around the world, surgical site infection is a complication that leads to damage to the patient and increased costs for the health services. Despite recent advances in surgical techniques, surgical site infection remains one of the most frequent complications in abdominal surgery.Perioperative hypothermia can increase the incidence rates of surgical site infection.There is evidence that perioperative hypothermia is associated with surgical site infection in abdominal surgery, but most studies were conducted in developed countries using retrospective designs. Perioperative hypothermia was identified as an independent risk factor for surgical site infection in patients undergoing abdominal surgery.The attributable fraction to the exposed indicated that, if the main exposure of interest (perioperative hypothermia) could be prevented during surgical anaesthetic procedures, more than 40% of surgical site infection cases would be avoided.The classification of the American Society of Anaesthesiologists was independently associated with the surgical site infection and presented a dose–response effect among its categories. Spinal anaesthesia served as an independent protective factor for surgical site infection. Aim: To identify the prevalence of pressure injury in patients diagnosed with traumatic brain injury and analyse the risk factors involved during hospitalization. Methods: This was a prospective study evaluating patients who were diagnosed with traumatic brain injury between November 2013 and September 2014. Patient characteristics, clinical and metabolic factors and therapeutic interventions, were evaluated within 30 days of hospital admission. Results: Most of the 240 patients included in the study were male, young, and non‐Caucasian. The incidence of pressure injury was 18.8%. In terms of severity classification, the incidence of pressure injury was 2.7%, 23.2%, and 42.6% in mild, moderate, and severe traumatic brain injury, respectively. Pressure injury development was more likely in the first 10 days of hospitalization. A moderate or severe traumatic brain injury classification, the use of noradrenaline, and older age were pressure injury risk factors. The presence of pressure injury was associated with mortality within 30 days of hospitalization (P <.001). Conclusion: The incidence of pressure injury was high in patients diagnosed with traumatic brain injury, especially in those whose injury was classified as severe. Older age, noradrenaline use, and a classification of moderate or severe traumatic brain injury were identified as pressure injury risk factors. Traumatic brain injury is a major cause of disability in young adults.One of the complications reported in patients diagnosed with traumatic brain injury is pressure injury. Complications related to pressure injury may increase the risk of mortality.Pressure injury occurs because of a variety of factors, such as changes to skin perfusion, metabolism, nutrition, body temperature, mobility, and sensory perception. A severity classification of moderate to severe traumatic brain injury increases the risk of developing pressure injuries.Older age and the use of noradrenaline, as well as the severity of the traumatic brain injury classification, were identified as risk factors for the development of pressure injury. In this study, we explored the production of qualitative nursing research in program repositories evaluated by the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel in Brazil, with concepts six and seven. We utilized a bibliometric study in which we considered Brazilian theses and dissertations with qualitative methodology published in 2018 and 2019 with qualitative methodology. In the 100 papers, 79 theses, and 13 dissertations, we identified that the types of studies that stood out were phenomenology, the wording of the objectives predominantly used the verbs "understand," and "analyze," and the instruments and techniques used were semi-structured interviews which present the analysis technique of the author Bardin, highlighting publications on public health. We conclude that our study evidences the importance of using a qualitative approach in nursing and emphasizes the need to pay attention to the theoretical framework, as well as analysis aspects adopted in different types of qualitative studies. Aims: This study aimed to investigate the influence of barriers to the use of research results in the practice of nurses on patient safety perception. Background: The use of research results in clinical practice promotes safe care, increases quality and reduces the possibility of adverse events. Design This is a cross‐sectional study. Methods: The sample consisted of 207 nurses from three public university hospitals in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil from March 2017 to November 2018. They answered a questionnaire with professional characteristics, The Barriers Scale and Safety Attitudes Questionnaire. Descriptive analysis, Student's t test, Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression were used for data analysis. Results: The findings showed most nurses had unfavourable competencies for implementing research results in practice. As barrier scores for the use of research results in practice increase, safety climate scores decrease. Taking a training course on the use of research results in clinical practice and organization characteristics, limitations of the setting were statistically significant, constituting factors that influence the perception of the safety climate. Conclusion: Investments in education are needed for health professionals to be aware of evidence‐based practice and how to use evidence to impact decision‐making outcomes, strengthening safety outcomes in health services. The use of research results in clinical practice promotes safe care, increases quality and reduces the possibility of adverse events.In the health literature, there is little evidence on the factors related to the use of research results in the clinical practice of nurses and the patient safety climate.The non‐use of research results in clinical practice is a relevant problem for patient safety. The singularity of the collective action of nursing categories in sociopolitical participation is the subject of our analysis. This paper attaches the compelling factors of social origin and aspects of the labor market to the political action of professionals. Based on the analytical association of the extended case method, we articulated the interpretation of the database of the Brazilian Nursing Profile Survey, specifically, in the light of socioeconomic identification, labor market, and working conditions, with an ethnographic study and semi-structured interviews in three hospital units. The bibliographic review shows the incorporation of these individuals without underestimating their particularity: the historical process of proletarianization in the Brazilian social formation, the inclusion of women in the labor market, and the relationship with unions. The history of workers based on inexperience in actions of resistance or union representation associated with the valorization of employment as a social ascent results in asymmetrical work regimes, a hindering element to coordinated actions, a fundamental aspect for the improvement of working conditions.

This paper discusses the importance of the Nursing to the Unified Health System, considering its presence in all organizational health structures, in the 27 units of the Federation and all municipalities of the country, essential, therefore, for the provision of high-quality health care. Nevertheless, the profession faces many challenges, both in the field of education and in the job market, that must be addressed, aiming at the valorization of these professionals who, despite all the difficulties they are subjected to, are committed to the health of the Brazilian population.

The purpose of this paper is to provide measurement properties evaluation and factor analysis of the Brazilian version of the diabetic foot ulcer scale‐short form (DFS‐SF). This methodological study evaluated the measurement properties of the DFS‐SF by ceiling and floor effect reliability, responsiveness, and structural construct validity. The study included 290 people with diabetic foot under regular follow‐up in a specialised outpatient clinic in inland São Paulo. Reliability was assessed by internal consistency using Cronbach's alpha and composite reliability. Ceiling and floor effects were assessed by the percentage of participants who scored the 15% worst (floor) and 15% best (ceiling) possible scale results. Validity was tested by correlating the instrument values with the domains of the Brazilian version of the Short Form Health Survey (SF‐36). Responsiveness (n = 34) was accessed through the wound area obtained by photography and evaluated by the Image J Features program and the DFS‐SF score at two moments, with a 4‐week interval between them. The instrument had good evidence of reliability, shown by adequate internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha in domains >0.70) and compound reliability (0.84 > CC > 0.92); and of convergent validity, by significant positive correlations of moderate to strong magnitude with SF‐36. Structural construct validity was examined by applying the DFS‐SF confirmatory factor analysis, which indicated that the Brazilian version of the instrument is properly fitted to the original dimensional structure. The ceiling and floor effect analysis showed no ceiling or floor effects. Responsiveness was observed in the wound area, but not in the DFS‐SF scores in the times. The Brazilian version of the DFS‐SF presented evidence of validity and reliability, suggesting that this instrument is a valid tool for assessing the quality of life of people with diabetic foot in the Brazilian population. Aim(s): To demonstrate how interoperable nursing care data can be used by nurses to create a more holistic understanding of the healthcare needs of multiple traumas patients with Impaired Physical Mobility. By proposing and validating linkages for the nursing diagnosis of Impaired Physical Mobility in multiple trauma patients by mapping to the Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC) and Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC) equivalent terms using free‐text nursing documentation. Design: A descriptive cross‐sectional design, combining quantitative analysis of interoperable data sets and the Kappa's coefficient score with qualitative insights from cross‐mapping methodology and nursing professionals' consensus. Methods: Cross‐mapping methodology was conducted in a Brazilian Level 1 Trauma Center using de‐identified records of adult patients with a confirmed medical diagnosis of multiple traumas and Impaired Physical Mobility (a nursing diagnosis). The hospital nursing free‐text records were mapped to NANDA‐I, NIC, NOC and NNN linkages were identified. The data records were retrieved for admissions from September to October 2020 and involved medical and nursing records. Three expert nurses evaluated the cross‐mapping and linkage results using a 4‐point Likert‐type scale and Kappa's coefficient. Results: The de‐identified records of 44 patients were evaluated and then were mapped to three NOCs related to nurses care planning: (0001) Endurance; (0204) Immobility Consequences: Physiological, and (0208) Mobility and 13 interventions and 32 interrelated activities: (6486) Environmental Management: Safety; (0840) Positioning; (3200) Aspiration Precautions; (1400) Pain Management; (0940) Traction/Immobilization Care; (3540) Pressure Ulcer Prevention; (3584) Skincare: Topical Treatment; (1100) Nutrition Management; (3660) Wound Care; (1804) Self‐Care Assistance: Toileting; (1801) Self‐Care Assistance: Bathing/Hygiene; (4130) Fluid Monitoring; and (4200) Intravenous Therapy. The final version of the constructed NNN Linkages identified 37 NOCs and 41 NICs. Conclusion: These valid NNN linkages for patients with multiple traumas can serve as a valuable resource that enables nurses, who face multiple time constraints, to make informed decisions efficiently. This approach of using evidence‐based linkages like the one developed in this research holds high potential for improving patient's safety and outcomes. Objective: To analyze scientific publications in order to identify the cross-cultural adaptation methods of instruments that are mainly applied in nursing., Method: Integrative review, in the electronic sources Medline - Pubmed, Cinahl, Lilacs, Scopus and Web of Science. 96 peer-reviewed papers, published between 2010 and 2015 were selected., Results: The articles that composed the sample were published in 59 different journals, 15.2% were Brazilian. The largest number of publications was concentrated in 2015 (31.2%), 28 countries appeared on the list which is led by Brazil (33.3%), followed by China (10.4%). It was used 26 different guidelines, however the one proposed by Beaton and their collaborators was mentioned in 47 (49.0%) articles and the Brislin's in 12 (12.5%)., Conclusion: This review does not allow us to define the most appropriate method, however all methods applied agreed on the use of back translation. In addition, many studies in different languages and countries showed the international acceptability of the method developed by Beaton et al.

Objective: To analyze the editorial characteristics and the level of evidence of articles published by Nursing journals in Brazil., Method: Documentary research on the websites of five Nursing journals and analysis of the articles published in 2016, based on their level of evidence. The form used was validated by experts., Results: Editorial boards with Brazilian and foreign researchers, normalization and international ethical recommendations on the publications, online version with open access, continuous publication system (20.0%), Portuguese and English, foreign authors (4.0% to 14.7%). The information provided to the authors is not clear (20.0%), articles with level of evidence 4 (86.7%). The international community had access to some of the papers published, and the highest rates were JCR/WOS 0.6984, SJR/Scopus 0.396, H/Scopus index 26 and Google Scholar 30., Conclusion: Scientific journals follow international publication standards. Most of the articles published do not provide strong scientific evidence, which has an impact on the use of the knowledge, on the citations received and on the effective advancement of the knowledge of the area.

ABSTRACT: Can low‐fidelity simulation improve the knowledge and skills of patients undergoing clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) and their caregivers to prevent complications? Patients undergoing CIC are exposed to risks, such as urethral trauma and urinary tract infections. Objective of this paper was to assess the implications of low‐fidelity simulations for patients and caregivers in the use of clean intermittent catheterization in the event of urethral trauma and for its prevention. A quasi‐experimental study carried out between November 2015 and February 2016 in the rehabilitation centre of a university hospital, with patients undergoing CIC and/or their caregivers. Following the ethical precepts, data collection was performed during nursing consultations by means of interviews, structured observation, and a knowledge test applied before and after the low‐fidelity simulation. Patients undergoing CIC and/or caregivers underwent a low‐fidelity simulation of CIC with urethral trauma and then they were guided by the researchers following the protocol established in the department. They then underwent another simulation with the same characteristics. Fifty‐five patients participated in this study, in which most of them (33 [60·0%]) were men, with an average age of 31·7 years. Bleeding was reported by 19 patients (34·5%), of which 18 were men. The performance of low‐fidelity simulations proved to be effective for patients or caregivers in adverse situations, such as bleeding, resistance to the introduction of the catheter and negative urine drainage. The performance of low‐fidelity simulation is easily accessible and shows efficiency when used in teaching‐learning processes of health education and development of skills and competencies. Aims and objectives To investigate whether the type of dressing used (occlusive vs. semi-occlusive) impacts on exit-site infection. Background The exit-site infections are a major predisposing factor for peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis, the main cause of technique failure and an important cause of mortality. The care taken in exit-site dressing is considered an important procedure for the prevention of trauma and contamination of this area. Nevertheless, to our knowledge, no study has yet analysed the impact of different dressing types on early exit-site infection (up to two months after catheter insertion). Design A prospective observational study involving the BRAZPD II (Brazilian Peritoneal Dialysis Multicenter Study) cohort. Methods All incident patients with data available for dressing type applied following peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion were included in the study. A multilevel logistic regression model was used to compare the log-odds of exit-site infections between groups. Results A total of 2460 incident patients were included. Occlusive and semi-occlusive dressings were applied in 82·6% (n = 2031) and 17·4% (n = 427) of patients, respectively. Exit-site infection incidence was not affected by the type of dressing used, with a logit for occlusive dressing of 2·15 (95% CI 0·81-5·70). The combined outcome of exit-site infection and tunnel infection also showed no significance between the groups (logit 1·46, 95% CI 0·72-2·97). Conclusion Our results indicate that the type of exit-site dressing used during the healing phase following peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion has no impact on early exit-site infection rates. Relevance to clinical practice Provides evidence to support the similarity between occlusive and semi-occlusive dressing regarding infection rates in exit site of peritoneal dialysis catheter, therefore allowing the choice to be made accordingly to routine or availability. Background: Nurses' intention to leave their profession is a worldwide concern. Studies have shown that it can take the form of a chain reaction: many nurses first leave the unit, then the hospital, and finally the profession. Organisation and other labour factors, personal and conjunctural, have been associated with the intention to quit nursing. This study aimed to examine the factors associated with the intention to leave the profession among registered nurses (RNs) at large public hospitals in Brazil.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, conducted from 2010 to 2011: all RNs at Rio de Janeiro's 18 largest public hospitals (>150 beds) were invited to participate. The study sample comprised 3,229 RNs (82.7% of those eligible), who answered a self-completed, multidimensional paper questionnaire. The outcome was defined as thoughts of leaving the profession sometimes a month or more. We based the analyses on hierarchical logistic regression models, considering three blocks of determinants: socio-demographic data (block I), occupational factors (block II), and health conditions (block III).Results: Of the study population, 22.1% indicated the intention to leave the profession. In the final model after adjustment, the variables associated with the intention to leave were as follows: male sex (odds ratio [OR] = 1.65), not holding a leadership position (OR = 1.28), highly demanding work (OR = 2.49), passive work (OR = 2.10), effort-reward imbalance (OR = 2.00), poor self-rated health (OR = 1.92), over-commitment to the job (OR = 1.87), and poor supervisor support (OR = 1.33). The likelihood of expressing the intention to leave increased with age (OR = 0.98 for the oldest).Conclusions: Self-rated health and factors connected with the work environment, particularly those that generate psychosocial strain, were most strongly associated with the intention to leave the profession. From the profiles of nurses who wished to leave the profession, we found that for many people who go into nursing-especially men and younger entrants-their prospects of remaining in the profession are poor. The potential role of psychosocial job characteristics and self-rated health indicates the need for long-term action involving all stakeholders, i.e. managers, employers, and workers. State and international entities can have profound effects on the development of a country's nursing profession. Through a global health governance lens, this paper explores the development of nursing in Brazil during the early twentieth century, and its intersections with national and international interests. Accordingly, we will show how state policies established an environment that fostered the institutionalization of nursing as a profession in Brazil and supported it as a means to increase the presence of females in nation building processes. The State focused on recruiting elite women for nursing, in part due to the Rockefeller Foundation's involvement in the country. Nurses who worked for Rockefeller came from well-educated classes within US society with specific ideas about who should be a nurse and the roles of nurses in a healthcare system. These women served as the primary vehicles for interacting with Brazilian health authorities responsible for health system development. Their early efforts did not, however, ensure a system capable of producing nursing human resources at a rate that, in present day Brazil, could meet the health needs of the country. Findings from this paper offer new avenues for historians to explore the early roots of professional nursing through a global health governance lens, improve the understanding of the intersection between international politics and professionalization, and highlight how these factors may impact nursing human resources production in the long term. This paper discusses the importance of the Nursing to the Unified Health System, considering its presence in all organizational health structures, in the 27 units of the Federation and all municipalities of the country, essential, therefore, for the provision of high-quality health care. Nevertheless, the profession faces many challenges, both in the field of education and in the job market, that must be addressed, aiming at the valorization of these professionals who, despite all the difficulties they are subjected to, are committed to the health of the Brazilian population. This paper is a contribution to the 80th years of the Brazilian Nursing Journal, official journal of the Brazilian Nurses Association, first nominated Nursing Annals and created in May 1932. At that time, the issues were focused as proposals to assure exchange communication between the Professional Class -the National Brazilian Graduate Nurses Association - and the associates, including all the people. In this way, the associate leaders were impelled through professional advances allied to the knowledge production regarding to the Professional Know/Knowledge, the practice assistance and education. The approach is through discussion and analytical appreciation about professional identity with punctual reconsiderations in philosophical vision. Instead of researching parameters the author prefers a pragmatic style around examples of three situations-problem as succeeded in the practical assistance, so that they could be critically appreciated alike fundamental basis to the nurses' art and enough to assure the definition of the professional profile in the historical-evolutive trajectory - with beginning in the nightingalean modernity and the proper assumed parsonian concepts - as such they are observed in the Brazilian Nursing literature. This paper aims to describe (1) the evolution of the International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP® ), since the International Council of Nurses (ICN) assumed, in 1989, the task of developing a classification of the elements of professional practice (nursing diagnoses, interventions and outcomes) with an international ambit; (2) the ICNP® Programme and its structural components, which fit together to conform the ICNP® terminology life cycle; (3) the Centres for ICNP® Research and Development, accredited by ICN; (4) finally, the Brazilian Center's contribution for research, development and dissemination of the ICNP® terminology. The ICNP® is constantly evolving and much has been achieved in nearly twenty-five years of its development. The ICNP® Centres have played a key role in the development, dissemination and use of the terminology in different fields of professional practice - teaching, clinical practice, research and management of nursing care.

Background: Most health systems are insufficiently prepared to promote the participation of chronically ill patients in their care. Strong primary health care (PHC) strengthens patients' resources and thus promotes their participation. The tasks of providing continuous care to people with chronic diseases and promoting self‐management are the responsibility of PHC nurses. Recent research assessing enablers of or barriers to nurses' efforts to support patients' participation has mostly not considered the special situation of patients with chronic diseases or focused on the PHC setting. Objective: To investigate enablers of and barriers to PHC nurses' efforts to promote the participation of chronically ill patients in their care. Methods: We interviewed 34 practicing PHC nurses and 23 key informants with advanced knowledge of PHC nursing practice in Brazil, Germany and Spain. The data was analyzed using thematic coding. Results: We identified four categories of barriers and enablers. (1) Establishing bonds with patients: Interviewees emphasized that understanding patients' views and behaviours is important for PHC nurses. (2) Cooperation with relatives and families: Good relationships with families are fundamental, however conflicts within families could challenge PHC nurses efforts to strengthen participation. (3) Communication and cooperation within PHC teams: PHC nurses see Cooperative team structures as a potential enabler, while the dominance of a 'biomedical' approach to patient care is seen as a barrier. (4) Work environment: Interviewees agreed that increased workload is a barrier to patient participation. Discussion and Conclusions: Supporting patient participation should be acknowledged as an important responsibility for nurses by general practitioners and PHC planners. PHC nurses should be trained in communicative competence when discussing participation with chronically ill patients. Interprofessional education could strengthen other professionals' understanding of patient participation as a nursing task. Patient or Public Contribution: This study is part of a research project associated with the research network 'forges: User‐oriented care: Promotion of health in the context of chronic diseases and care dependency'. The study's focus and provisional results were discussed continuously with partners in health and social care practice and presented to and discussed with the public at two conferences in which patient representatives, professionals and researchers participated. Introduction: This study aimed to identify factors associated with late diagnosis and clinically monitor newly diagnosed HIV/AIDS patients. Method: Retrospective study, based on secondary data from a specialized unit at the Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto of the University of Sao Paulo. Data collection included sociodemographic, behavioral, clinical, and laboratory data of newly diagnosed HIV patients between 2015 and 2019. Data analysis was undertaken using inferential statistical tests. Results: A total of 314 individuals were newly diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, 86.6% (272) had a late diagnosis and 53.8% (169) were diagnosed very late. Using the adjusted odds ratio, we observed that bisexual and MSM patients were less likely to have a late diagnosis compared to straight patients. Individuals who entered through the emergency department and Outpatient Clinic had a lower chance of having a very late diagnosis compared to those diagnosed in the ward/inpatient unit. Having a higher education and university education were protective factors against having a very late diagnosis of HIV infection compared to elementary school education only. In addition, male patients were more likely to have a very late diagnosis compared to female patients. Conclusions: This study evidenced a high prevalence of late and very late diagnoses. Aims and Objective: The goal of this paper was to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Nursing Work Index-Revised-Brazilian version (B-NWI-R)., Background: Some instruments evaluate the presence of certain characteristics in the professional practice environment of nurses. Among them, the B-NWI-R, often cited in the literature and which is examined in the present study. This instrument is composed of 57 items and four subscales: autonomy, control over the work environment, nurse-physician relationships and organisational support., Design: A cross-sectional research design was carried out in three public university hospitals in the State of São Paulo, Brazil., Methods: The sample was composed of 278 nurses. The reliability of the instrument was evaluated through its homogeneity, using the Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The validity of the subscales of the B-NWI-R was evaluated through divergent construct validity and criterion-related validity. For the divergent construct validity, the Brazilian version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) was employed, while for the criterion-related validity, variables such as 'satisfaction at work', 'perception of quality of care' and 'nurses' intention to leave work in the following year' were considered., Results: The results showed satisfactory consistency for the total of the items (α=0·95) and for the subscales of the B-NWI-R: 'control over practice settings' (α=0·75); 'nurse-physician relationships' (α=0·75); 'organisational support' (α=0·75) and 'autonomy' (α=0·63). The divergent validity resulted in significant correlation between the adapted instrument subscales and those of the MBI. In addition, a significant correlation was obtained between the subscales of the B-NWI-R and the variables 'perception of quality of care', 'satisfaction at work' and 'intention to leave work in the following year'., Conclusion: The reliability and validity of the B-NWI-R have been established., Relevance to Clinical Practice: The B-NWI-R subscales can be used to assess the nurses' perceptions of the work environment., (© 2011 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.)

This was a literature review study which examined the theme of alcohol in the papers of the Brazilian Journal of Nursing, from 1932 to 2007. A manual search was performed using the keywords: alcohol, alcoholism, drugs and psychoactive substances. The discourse on alcohol, used by the authors, was analyzed according to the methodological proposals of Bardin. Eight papers were found that showed three categories: biopsychosocial aspects, conceptions of alcohol and alcoholism, and image of the alcoholic. The study shows how the discourse on alcohol and alcoholism has progressed from common sense to scientific status, corresponding to the historical moment of its production.

The idea is to think about the knowledge and the learning involved in nursing care, its technologies, the health-disease process and its determinants, as well as the care as a product. From 1980 to 1992, 544.357 hospital beds were occupied and 19,6 million hospitalizations; therefore, 544,357 or 19.6 million of delivered care. This consideration emerged from the Research Group Care/Nursing Care from the Anna Nery Nursing School subsidized by Certeau's concepts of daily care and concepts of care practices, care, and client, for the analysis of the constitutive elements in nursing care. The knowledge and learning construction points to the creation of products such as books/chapters, protocols, new papers, agendas, DVDs, CDs, thesis, and dissertations. The way of caring contribute to the development of a series of products, built on a daily basis.

The paper aims to discuss the way of equity can be reached by International Classification of Nursing Practice in Collective Health - CIPESC. CIPESC is a Brazilian system to classify nursing phenomena, it's used in nursing consultation in primary care. Equity in health means that everyone in the society has opportunity to improve their potential of health. CIPESC allows to know the nursing diagnoses and interventions and doing this allows knowing health needs and vulnerabilities of the social groups. Nursing interventions in the most vulnerable groups results interventions heading for equity. At the same time, it's possible to revisit work process in health aiming to better focusing nursing actions. Also it's possible to create new tools to the nursing interventions.

A critical reflection is proposed on the knowledge that has been produced by Nursing, that identifies it as a discipline, and on whether that knowledge is enough, based on the positive sciences and therefore with a framework of science and scientific discipline in order to build the fundamentals of care, which is the object with which Nursing works. Under a historical perspective, this paper analyzes how Brazilian Nursing, especially since the 1990s, has been dedicating itself to theoretical and practical problems and to concrete experiences on care anchored to various knowledge dimensions, signalizing the need for continuity of knowledge production that is linked to practical and routine experiences of Nursing, including other knowledge approaches that are focused on ontological, existential, dialogical and other dimensions, because the health-disease process is always complex and filled with ethical values which express the singularity of men.

Brazil's Basic Healthcare Act establishes the principle of integral care in terms of networking between services and professional practices, to which we add a dimension: the configuration of public policies. Nurses were selected for this survey as they handle the initial contacts with women and also because we believe they are endowed with an across-the-board view of integral care during the various phases in the lives of this population. This paper examines the social representations of nurses on the scope of the integral care available to women through Brazil's Basic Healthcare Network, explored through qualitative interviews with ten nurses in Mato Grosso do Sul State. These data were analyzed through the Collective Subject Discourse (CSD) approach, based on the Theory of Social Representations. The findings are presented in seven Collective Subject Discourses that describe the main ideas identified during the interviews. This leads to the conclusion that nurses have a fragmented view of women's healthcare, still guided by physical complaints; they cannot define integral care, repeating the discourse of the holistic approach without understanding what this really means; they work on an individualized basis, feeling that this area is not structured to offer integral care.

This paper presents a preliminary overview of policies and practices in health focusing equity. It begins with a brief description of the actions developed by the Collective Health Nursing Department of the School of Nursing of the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, to support the struggle for social equity. It also presents the different perspectives of the concept that can be identified in health literature, each of them shaping distinct policies and practices.

Changes in nurse healthcare practices, especially for projects such as Brazil's Family Health Program, prompted us to study the related communication processes. A review of the literature from January 1994 through to December 2004 examined 26 papers in Brazilian and international periodicals, four dissertations, three theses and four books in the BIREME data-bases (LILACS and SCIELO-Br). Using 'Communication', 'Family Health Program' and 'Nursing' as key words, 373 mentions were found for 'Communication' and 'Nursing', twelve mentions for 'Family Health Program' and 'Communication' (LILACS); eighteen mentions for 'Communication' and 'Nursing'; and no mentions for 'Family Health Program' and 'Communication' (SCIELO-Br). In order to analyze these findings, the publications located through this search were grouped under four trends in the links between Communication and Nursing practices: Communication within the Family Health Program teams; Communication in professional Nursing practice; Communication as a leadership tool for Nurses; and Communication in Nursing education. This study showed that although the most usual communication model for healthcare practices is still unilinear, there is already a clear trend towards more dialogue, which poses a challenge for nursing practices in the Family Health Program.

This paper aims at reporting the experience undergone upon the third edition of the "UFRGS Open Doors" event held at the School of Nursing of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (EEUFRGS) in 2005. The event was planned, scheduled, and organized by its authors. The university defines this activity as an action that provides the opportunity of an approach between society and university. The EEUFRGS received 119 visitors, who participated in health, education and information activities about the nursing undergraduate course and what the profession involves. This event gives visibility to nurses' social practice and to the School of Nursing, and it has been repeated and updated every year.

This paper is based on the assumption that the widening gap between manual labor and intellectual tasks tends to weaken the inherent potential of the labor force. Its purpose is to analyze current trends in the division of labor in the Brazilian nursing sector. This is exemplified by the findings of recent surveys conducted by graduate students who studied various aspects of the work processes involved in healthcare, education and research through a qualitative meta-analysis. The non-appropriation of the object by the work process agents was common to all three studies: the graduate students plan an approach to the object that is altered by the advisor in compliance with research interests; reports on educational experiments conducted by nurses highlight the gap between planning and implementation of the activities, hampering full exploration of the purpose of educational efforts; community health agents perform tasks assigned by the nursing staff. Dealing with this alienation is an urgent task, through training and upgrading the subjects so that they have full mastery of the object, the purpose and the work tools, able to share their expertise and work closely together with a critical approach in order to transform the epidemiological profiles of the various social classes.
