Inverse magnetron injection gun (IMIG) provides several advantages over simple MIG especially in high-power, high-frequency gyrotron. Sub-millimeter (>230 GHz), high-power (≥1 MW) gyrotrons would be required in futuristic plasma fusion machines to fulfill the need of tens of megawatt RF power for electron cyclotron resonance heating. Here, in this paper, an IMIG is designed for 0.24-THz, 1-MW gyrotron. First, the tradeoff design equations and technical constraints are used to synthesize the electrodes geometry and electrical parameters of IMIG. This synthesized IMIG model is further simulated to finalize the design using electron trajectory code EGUN. Simultaneously, the magnet system including the auxiliary gun coils and superconducting magnets (SCM) is also designed and the obtained magnetic field profile is used in the IMIG simulations. In the case of high-power MIG, the suppression of the beam halo is a major design concern and analyzed critically in the present IMIG design. The shape of the modulating anode and main anode is optimized to make a beam halo shielding. This IMIG is designed for a very high-order mode (TE46,17) simple cylindrical cavity, which confines the range of the tolerance in the electron beam parameters. So, a detailed parametric and misalignment analysis is also performed with respect to the electron beam parameters, such as pitch factor, velocity spread, and guiding center radius spread. Magnetron injection gun (MIG) is an important and critical part of any gyrotron. The overall performance of gyrotron deeply depends on the quality of gyrating electron beam. In this article, the design of triode type magnetron injection gun for 200 GHz frequency tunable gyrotron is discussed. It is planned to design and develop a 200 GHz gyrotron for 300 MHz DNP-NMR spectroscopy. The triode MIG is designed in such a way that it can be used in 200 GHz gyrotron of higher RF power for other applications also such as electron spin resonance, imaging. First, geometrical and electrical parameters of MIG are calculated using trade-off and scaling equations. Based on the calculated parameters, further, electron beam trajectory simulations are performed in EGUN. The geometry of electrodes are optimized through numerous simulation iterations to achieve the required beam parameters, such as, minimum spread in velocity and guiding center radius, an optimum value of velocity ratio (1.3–1.5), guiding center radius as per the maximum beam-wave coupling strength. The magnet system is designed to achieve the smooth Gaussian type of magnetic field profile with peak value of 7.35 T at cavity center. In this paper, we present the RF behavior of conventional cylindrical interaction cavity for 240 GHz, 1 MW gyrotron for futuristic plasma fusion reactors. Very high-order TE mode is searched for this gyrotron to minimize the Ohmic wall loading at the interaction cavity. The mode selection process is carried out rigorously to analyze the mode competition and design feasibility. The cold cavity analysis and beam-wave interaction computation are carried out to finalize the cavity design. The detail parametric analyses for interaction cavity are performed in terms of mode stability, interaction efficiency and frequency. In addition, the design of triode type magnetron injection gun is also discussed. The electron beam parameters such as velocity ratio and velocity spread are optimized as per the requirement at interaction cavity. The design study of dual frequency gyrotron operating at 42/84 GHz frequencies with output power ∼500 kW is presented in this article. TE 10,4 and TE 6,2 are selected as the operating modes for 84 and 42 GHz operations of the device, respectively. The beam-wave interaction simulations are performed by using the Particle-in-Cell algorithm to evaluate the growth of RF power and frequency. Magnetically tunable magnetron injection gun is also designed to launch the electron beam at the radius of 6.2 mm (84 GHz) and 7.3 mm (42 GHz) in the interaction cavity. The CVD diamond RF window is also designed, which must be transparent for 42 GHz and 84 GHz frequencies. In this paper, the evaluation of cathode-heater assembly of magnetron injection gun (MIG) for 42 GHz, 200 kW gyrotron is presented. The cathode-heater assembly is purchased from M/S SEMICON.The cathode-heater assembly is experimentally studied in three different conditions; in a belljar system, during vacuum processing of MIG and during MIG testing to ensure the required rise of cathode surface temperature for pre-set heater power. This paper describes the design of a 0.3-THz gyrotron at second harmonic operation. The interaction cavity design and the beam–wave interaction computation are carried out for TE0,6 mode by using the particle-in-cell electromagnetic simulation approach. The simulation results confirm >6\-kW output power with efficiency \sim17\% by using an electron beam with accelerating voltage 20 kV and current 2.0 A. To achieve the required electron beam parameters, a triode magnetron injection gun is designed. The transverse-to-axial velocity ratio (\alpha), 1.27 and the transverse velocity spread <4\% are realized. Abstract: The electrical design of different components of 1MW, 170GHz gyrotron such as, magnetron injection gun, cylindrical interaction cavity and collector and RF window is presented in this article. Recently, a new project related to the development of 170GHz, 1MW gyrotron has been started for the Indian Tokamak. TE34,10 mode is selected as the operating mode after studied the problem of mode competition. The triode type geometry is selected for the design of magnetron injection gun (MIG) to achieve the required beam parameters. The maximum transverse velocity spread of 3.28% at the velocity ratio of 1.34 is obtained in simulations for a 40A, 80kV electron beam. The RF output power of more than 1MW with 36.5% interaction efficiency without depressed collector is predicted by simulation in single-mode operation at 170GHz frequency. The simulated single-stage depressed collector of the gyrotron predicted the overall device efficiencies>55%. Due to the very good thermal conductivity and very weak dependency of the dielectric parameters on temperature, PACVD diamond is selected for window design for the transmission of RF power. The in-house developed code MIGSYN and GCOMS are used for initial geometry design of MIG and mode selection respectively. This paper presents the design of 28 GHz, 200 kW gyrotron for Indian TOKAMAK system. The paper reports the designs of interaction cavity, magnetron injection gun and RF window. EGUN code is used for the optimization of electron gun parameters. TE03 mode is selected as the operating mode by using the in-house developed code GCOMS. The simulation and optimization of the cavity parameters are carried out by using the Particle-in-cell, three dimensional (3-D)-electromagnetic simulation code MAGIC. A triode magnetron injection gun (MIG) is designed for a 1-MW 170-GHz gyrotron, which will be used in an electron cyclotron resonance heating system for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor. The initial design of MIG is performed by using the in-house code MIGSYN. For the electron-beam emission and propagation, the 2-D code EGUN is implemented. The transverse-to-axial velocity ratio \alpha is 1.37, and the transverse velocity spread less than 4% is realized. The results are also validated against two other 2-D and 3-D codes, i.e., TRAK and CST-Particle Studio, respectively, which are in close agreement. The gyrotron that operates with a double electron beam is designed and presented. The design of a 42-GHz 200-kW gyrotron at \TE03 mode has been done and presented elsewhere. To enhance the RF power without losing the interaction efficiency of the 42-GHz gyrotron, double electron beams are launched into the cavity. The beam–wave interaction calculations and power and frequency growth estimation are performed and compared with the single-beam operation results. In the design of the gyrotron, in-house developed codes, GCOMS, MIGSYN, and MIGANS, as well as commercially available codes MAGIC and EGUN are used. The results show that more than 400 kW of power is not possible by single-beam operation while the double-beam operation shows this amount of power with the same mode. To achieve the double electron beams of the desired parameters at the cavity region, the double-beam magnetron injection gun (MIG) is designed. In this paper, the design of a triode-type magnetically tunable magnetron injection gun (MT-MIG) is presented for 1-MW 110-, 120-, and 127.5-GHz-frequency gyrotrons with the various operating modes. Some basic equations relevant to the problem available in the literature have been used to obtain the preliminary design. Computer simulation has been performed by using the commercially available code EGUN. The triode-type MT-MIG with the accelerating voltage of 80 kV, the beam current of 40 A, the average transverse-to-axial velocity ratio of the electron beam of 1.26–1.35, and the maximum transverse velocity spread of less than 5% has been designed. A triode-type magnetron injection gun (MIG) for a 42 GHz, 200 kW gyrotron was designed by two commercial codes: EGUN and TRAK. An in-house code MIGANS was used as the post-processor of the EGUN. Some basic equations relevant to the problem available in literature were used while using the EGUN code for the purpose. A 40 A double-anode magnetron injection gun for a 1 MW, 110 GHz gyrotron has been designed. The preliminary design has been obtained by using some trade-off equations. The electron beam analysis has been performed by using the commercially available code EGUN and the in-house developed code MIGANS. The operating mode of the gyrotron is TE22,6 and it is operated in the fundamental harmonic. The electron beam with a low transverse velocity spread ( $$ \delta {\beta_{ \bot \max }} = 2.26\% $$) and the transverse-to-axial velocity ratio of the electron beam (α) = 1.37 is obtained. The simulated results of the MIG obtained with the EGUN code have been validated with another trajectory code TRAK. The results on the design output parameters obtained by both the codes are in good agreement.
