The eastern flank of the Talesh range of western Alborz, northwestern Iran, exposes volumetrically significant Late Cretaceous volcanic and volcaniclastic associations as well as cross-cutting dykes and minor subvolcanic equivalents. The volcanic units appear as massive to pillowed flows interlayered with volcaniclastic beds and subordinate limestones. We present new field data, zircon U Pb ages, bulk-rock major and trace element geochemistry, and Sr Nd isotopes on the igneous rock suite. Geochemical data show that the lava units and dykes are mainly basaltic in composition with minor basaltic andesites and trachytes. They form two contrasting series of arc-related calc-alkaline (Group 1) and OIB-like (Group 2) rocks. The zircon U Pb age of Group 1 rocks is 95.6 ± 1.8 Ma (2σ), whereas for Group 2 rocks, cross-cutting relationships and stratigraphic constraints indicate a somewhat younger age. Group 1 rocks have 87Sr/86Sr (i) varying from 0.7038 to 0.7070 and ε Nd (t) values ranging from +0.5 to +5.0. Group 2 rocks have 87Sr/86Sr (i) = 0.7040–0.7065 and ε Nd (t) from −3.0 to +3.7. Trace element and isotopic modelling shows that the primitive Group 1 magmas were derived from a metasomatized mantle source enriched by the addition of ∼6–10 % sediment melt component, while Group 2 rocks are consistent with melts of an asthenospheric mantle source enriched by ∼1–5 % EMII component. Trace element modelling indicates that Group 1 rocks formed from ∼6–13 % partial melts of a spinel-garnet lherzolite with garnet:spinel ratios of 45:55 to 10:90, whereas primitive Group 2 melts were generated through ∼1–3 % partial melting of a garnet-spinel-lherzolite with garnet:spinel ratios of 90:10 to 80:20. We propose a geodynamic model in which a north-dipping Neotethyan slab beneath the western Alborz (Talesh area) continental margin produced arc assemblages of Group 1 rocks and subsequent slab rollback led to the upwelling of an asthenospheric mantle to generate OIB-like magmatism of Group 2 rocks in an extensional intra-arc to back-arc setting. The southern Midyan terrane is a composite Tonian to Ediacaran tectonostratigraphic crustal block in the northern Arabian Shield that prior to Red Sea opening was contiguous with coeval rocks in the Eastern Desert of Egypt and Sinai. Ion microprobe (sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe [SHRIMP]) dating of 12 rock samples described here and the results of other dating programmes establish a clear timeframe for depositional, intrusive, and structural events in the region and provide a chronology of tectonism in this part of the Arabian-Nubian Shield. Deposition of Zaam and Bayda group volcanosedimentary rocks and emplacement of mafic-ultramafic complexes and TTG-type diorite, tonalite, and granodiorite denote formation of the Tonian (780-715 Ma) Zaam arc and fore-arc ophiolite above a possible west-dipping subduction system in the southern part of the Midyan terrane. Convergence with the Hijaz terrane farther south and obduction of ophiolite nappes resulted by ~700 Ma in development of the Yanbu suture. Ongoing or a new subduction system led to a ~705-660 Ma Cryogenian pulse of magmatism represented by I-type calc-alkaline diorite, granodiorite, and granite that have volcanic-arc and syn-collisional granite affinities. This was followed, after a brief end-Cryogenian hiatus, by a 635-~570 Ma period of Ediacaran magmatism marked by monzogranite, syenogranite, and minor gabbro and diorite. These rocks are reported to have within-plate to volcanic-arc and syncollision chemical characteristics but their precise tectonic setting is uncertain. Structurally, the intrusions are diapiric and were evidently emplaced in an extensional regime consistent with an overlap between intrusion and Najd faulting associated, at this time, with transpressional collision and northward extension through much of the ANS. Terminal magmatism in the southern Midyan terrane postdated cessation of Najd faulting at ~575 Ma and resulted in the emplacement of undeformed within-plate A-type alkali-feldspar granites and mafic (lamprophyre) and felsic dikes. The results of geochronological (U-Pb), isotope-geochemical (Lu-Hf), and geochemical (REEs) studies of young (MZ, KZ) and xenogenic (AR, PR) zircons from magmatic rocks of the Central Arctic rises of the Arctic Ocean (AO) and the crest zone of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) are presented. The data obtained show that the depleted mantle could be a source of young (KZ) zircons of the MAR, whereas young (MZ) zircons of the MAR and all xenogenic (AR, PR) zircons of the AO and MAR are from crustal rocks of the continental lithosphere. The new data obtained during thorough geological-structural, geochronological, petrographic, and petrochemical investigations of Late Cretaceous granitoids from the southern Sredinnyi Range in Kamchatka and zircon dating by the U-Pb SIMS and LA-ICPMS methods indicate that this region was characterized by intense granitoid magmatism in the Campanian (83.1 ± 2.0 to 76.2 ± 1.5 Ma). The Campanian granitoids mark initiation of the 'newly formed' continental crust in Kamchatka. The composition of these Late Cretaceous rocks demonstrates similarity to peraluminous I-type granites. The Triassic succession of the central Southern Alps (Italy) is stacked into several units bounded by south-verging low-angle thrust faults, which are related to two successive steps of crustal shortening. The thrust surfaces are cut by high-angle extensional and strike-slip faults, which controlled the emplacement of hypabissal magmatic intrusions that post-date thrusts motions. Intrusion ages based on SHRIMP U-Pb zircon dating span between 42 ± 1 and 39 ± 1 Ma, suggesting close time relationships with the earliest Adamello intrusion stages and, more in general, with the widespread calc-alkaline magmatism described in the Southern Alps. Fission-track ages of magmatic apatites are indistinguishable from U-Pb crystallization ages of zircons, suggesting that the intrusion occurred in country rocks already exhumed above the partial annealing zone of apatite (depth < 2-4 km). These data indicate that the central Southern Alps were already structured and largely exhumed in the Middle Eocene. Although we describe minor faults affecting magmatic bodies and local reactivations of older structures, no major internal deformations have occurred in the area after the Bartonian. New geochronological U-Pb (LA-ICP-MS) zircon data and geochemical analyses from the Variscan orthogneisses and metavolcanic rocks in the western Tauern window are presented and used to reconstruct the pre-Alpine evolution of this area. The late- and post-Variscan stage in the Tauern window was characterised by distinct magmatic pulses accompanied by the formation of volcano-sedimentary basins. The magmatic activity started in the Visean (335.4 ± 1.5 Ma) with the intrusion of a K-rich, durbachitic biotite-granite (protolith of the Ahorn gneiss). Following a period of exhumation and erosion, Westfalian-Stefanian volcanics were deposited (Grierkar meta-rhyodacite: 309.8 ± 1.5 Ma; Venntal meta-rhyolite: 304.0 ± 3.0 Ma). A renewed magmatic pulse occurred in the Early Permian, producing large volumes of tonalites and granodiorites (Tux meta-granodiorite: 292.1 ± 1.9 Ma). The youngest magmatism is characterised by pyroclastic and tuffitic deposits (Pfitsch meta-rhyolite: 280.5 ± 2.6 Ma; Schönach valley meta-andesite: 279.0 ± 4.8 Ma). This volcanism was probably related to crustal extensional faulting within an intra-continental graben and horst setting, asthenospheric upwelling and heat flow increase due to the onset of the Permian rifting. The Permo-Triassic peneplanation and subsidence is documented by shallow marine and evaporitic deposits. Probably in the Middle Jurassic times, the area was flooded and in the Late Jurassic the whole area was covered by limestones, representing post-rift sediments on the southern European continental margin. U-Pb dating of zircons (SHRIMP-II) has been performed for the first time for granites, granodiorites, and synplutonic granodiorite and melanodiorite bodies of the Shartash and Shabry massifs in the Middle Urals. The time of the formation of the massifs is 300-306 Ma, which is 25 Ma younger than the previous estimates. The age data obtained are in line with the time of the formation of the adamellite-granite series of the Verkhisetsk Batholite (the master sample of tonalite-granodiorite-granite magmatism in the Middle Urals), the series of which is petrochemically close to the rocks of the massifs. Abstract: Detrital zircon dating from Neoproterozoic successions in the Sirwa inlier of the Anti-Atlas belt in Morocco confirms that the maximum depositional age of the main stratigraphic groups is significantly younger than has been previously proposed in lithostratigraphic correlations. This can probably be extended to the whole Anti-Atlas according to other recent data from the Saghro inlier. Although the relative stratigraphic position of the different units remains valid as published previously, a crucial implication of the new ages is that the sequences believed to be contemporaneous with oceanic crust and island arc formation during the rifting and break-up of the northern margin of the West African Craton (WAC), and believed to be involved in the first phases of the Pan-African orogeny, are actually late to post-orogenic. The age of the main deformation associated with the collision of the oceanic- and arc-derived terranes to the WAC, allegedly affecting the sediments of the Saghro Group, has been estimated at around 663–640Ma. However, the youngest zircon populations of sediments of the Saghro and Bou Salda Groups, obtained in this study, cluster around 620–610Ma, constraining the maximum age of deposition. This age of sedimentation is indistinguishable from the age of intrusive high-K calc-alkaline plutons of the Assarag Suite, suggesting a very rapid cycle of magmatism, relief formation, erosion and sedimentation in an active geodynamic scenario. Moreover, the proportion of the 610Ma detrital zircons becomes less with respect to the Paleoproterozoic zircons at higher stratigraphic levels, suggesting that the source of young zircons was progressively eroded and more extensive cratonic areas, that probably underlie the Neoproterozoic rocks, were exposed. We interpret these data in terms of the development of a ca. 610Ma magmatic arc, built upon WAC basement, and its progressive dismantling. This arc can be correlated with the voluminous late Neoproterozoic (ca. 640–570Ma) arc magmatism characteristic of the north Gondwana margin and the peri-Gondwanan terranes. The diamictite beds that appear in the Imghi Formation of the Saghro Group have been correlated with the Sturtian glacial period ca. 700Ma. However, zircons from one sample of these diamictites indicate that this correlation cannot be longer maintained, and instead they should be correlated with the Marinoan glacial period ca. 630–610Ma, with a widespread distribution of glaciogenic deposits in West Africa. In addition, around 375 U–Pb concordant analyses obtained from Paleoproterozoic zircons from six samples represent a statistically significant population of this area of the WAC basement, which can be a useful database for comparison with the detrital zircon populations of the peri-Gondwanan terranes of Europe and North America, as the WAC margins were one of the major sediment suppliers for these terranes. Zircon LA-ICP MS U-Pb dating of six metamorphic rocks and a metagranite (breccia) from southern basement of the Songliao Basin are reported In order to constrain the formation ages of basement. The basement metamorphic rocks in the Songliao Basin mainly consist of metagabbro (L45-1), amphibolite (SN117), metarhyolitical tuff (G190), sericite (Ser) schist (N103), chlorite (ChI) schist (T5-1), blotite (Bi)-actlnolite (Act)-quartz (Q) schist (Y205), and metagranite (L44-1). The cathodoluminesence (CL) Images of the zircons from metagabbro (L45-1) and metagranite (L44-1) Indicate that they have cores of magmatic origin and rims of metamorphic overgrowths. Their U-Pb isotopic ages are 1808±21 Ma and 1873±13 Ma, respectively. The zircons with oscillatory zoning from amphibolite (SN117) and Chi schist (T5-1), being similar to those of mafic igneous rocks, yield ages of 274 ± 3.4 Ma and 264 ± 3.2 Ma, respectively. The zircons from metarhyolitical tuff (G190) and Ser schist (N103) display typical magmatic growth zoning and yield ages of 424 ± 4.5 Ma and 287 ± 5.1 Ma, respectively. Most of zircons from Bi-Act-Q schist (Y205) are round in shape and different in absorption degree in the CL Images, Implying their sedimentary detritals. U-Pb dating yield concordant ages of 427 ± 3.1 Ma, 455 ± 12 Ma, 696 ± 13 Ma, 1384±62 Ma, 1649±36 Ma, 1778±18 Ma, 2450±9 Ma, 2579±10 Ma, 2793±4 Ma and 2953±14 Ma. The above-mentioned results indicate that the Precambrian crystalline basement (1808-1873 Ma) exists in the southern Songliao Basin and could be related to tectonic thrust, and that the Early Paleozoic (424-490 Ma) and Late Paleozoic magmatisms (264-292 Ma) also occur in the basin basement, which are consistent with the ages of the detrital zircons from Bi-Act-Q schist in the basement.
