Abstract

Digital collaborations are often stymied because institutions of higher education are increasingly divided between two cultures: the culture of knowledge and the culture of information. Campuses primarily remain institutions of knowledge, although practices of information acquisition can no longer be ignored, especially since the advent of networked computing and study with digital texts. Yet the traditional division of labor and the ownership of intellectual property within the academy are threatened by digital collaborations; and the claims of information theory, which is associated with epistemologies of uncertainty and probability, challenge conservative ideologies of university culture. As a result, policies for the development of hybrid instruction and digital archives are often dictated by "Virtualpolitik," or the Realpolitik of virtual institutions, in lieu of a long-term vision for meaningful institutional change. This paper examines four Internet-based initiatives designed to improve cross-campus teaching and learning in California public universities--MERLOT, CPR, UCWRITE, and SPIDER--and argues that effective programs with lasting legacies take advantage of a "bazaar" rather than a "cathedral" development model and incorporate meaningful "information literacy" objectives that go beyond the mastery of particular terms and tools. 2. Communicative Competence in Audio Classrooms: A Position Paper for the CADE 1991 Conference.

Abstract

Classroom practitioners need to move their attention away from the technological and logistical competencies required for audio conferencing (AC) to the required communicative competencies in order to advance their skills in handling the psychodynamics of audio virtual classrooms which include audio alone and audio with graphics. While the technology is new, its associated human interaction issues are not, and if these issues are not handled competently, AC will exist as an under-developed technology in an inferior partnership with computer conferencing. Audio classrooms present three initial conditions: (1) reduced cue load, i.e., less non-verbal information is available; (2) distance is psychological as well as geographic; and (3) temporal immediacy is a given, but contextual immediacy cannot be taken for granted. Three conditions are needed for implementation: (1) audio classrooms have to be in context, i.e., integrated into the whole range of course learning and teaching activities; (2) an informal environment is needed where students feel safe enough to share tentative ideas; and (3) participants need to be time-aware, but not time-constrained. In AC there is a need to focus on people and productivity; feel the delight of academic exploration and discovery; see the AC environment as presenting opportunities; use the ideas and strategies of communications theorists; and develop more sophisticated definitions of interactive competence. 7. BERTs of a feather: Studying inter- and intra-group communication via information theory and language models.

Abstract

When communicating, individuals alter their language to fulfill a myriad of social functions. In particular, linguistic convergence and divergence are fundamental in establishing and maintaining group identity. Quantitatively characterizing linguistic convergence is important when testing hypotheses surrounding language, including interpersonal and group communication. We provide a quantitative interpretation of linguistic convergence grounded in information theory. We then construct a computational model, built on top of a neural network model of language, that can be deployed to measure and test hypotheses about linguistic convergence in "big data." We demonstrate the utility of our convergence measurement in two case studies: (1) showing that our measurement is indeed sensitive to linguistic convergence across turns in dyadic conversation, and (2) showing that our convergence measurement is sensitive to social factors that mediate convergence in Internet-based communities (specifically, r/MensRights and r/MensLib). Our measurement also captures differences in which social factors influence web-based communities. This document contains six papers from a symposium on counseling process research which offer the application of multiple research perspectives and analysis of a common data set. Analyses of two interviews from a single counseling case include lag analysis of relational control, the investigation of topic control, discourse analysis of the interaction, information theory analysis of the structure of the interaction, and analysis of the attributional changes and interpersonal strategies occurring during the sessions. "A Structural Analysis of Counseling Interaction" by James W. Lichtenberg analyzes two sessions' talk with a coding scheme that orients the coder to locate evidence of relational control in the counselor and client utterances. "Interactive Counseling Discourse as Social Control: Stochastic Analysis and Microanalysis" by Myrna L. Friedlander and Susan D. Phillips analyzes the sessions' talk by administering some of the categories of the Discourse Activity Analysis System and the stochastic tests of stability and predictability of talk sequences. "An Examination of Topic Control in Counseling" by Terence J. Tracey analyzes the sessions by administering a coding scheme consisting of topic initiation and topic following. "A Descriptive and Lag Analysis of Relational Control in Counseling" by Laurie Heatherington analyzes the talk by using the coding scheme provided by the Relational Communication Control Coding System categories and the procedures of a lag sequential analysis. "Influence in Counseling: Content and Relationship" by Charles D. Claiborn analyzes the sessions by administering a modification of the Interpersonal Communication Rating Scale categories. The final paper "On Getting Closer to a Description of the Actual Events in Counseling: Discussant Remarks" by Michael J. 11. An Investigation of Alternative Measures of School Segregation. Discussion Paper No. 229-74.

Abstract

This paper examines, both theoretically and empirically, three measures of segregation, with the empirical focus on school segregation. The first measure is based on the absolute deviation of the racial composition of a school from that of the school district, the second is based on the square of that deviation, and the third is derived from information theory. The purpose of this paper is to examine and compare the properties of these three measures in terms of how useful they are both as descriptive devices and as indicators of appropriate policy actions. Separate discussions of the theoretical nature of each index are accompanied by summaries of their calculated values based on a sample of school districts. Several arguments are given for preferring the information theory measure: it incorporates the notion of diminishing marginal payoff to desegregation; it depends on the entire distribution of students by race across schools; it may be interpreted as a measure of association between race and school assignment; it can be meaningfully aggregated; and, once aggregated, it can be decomposed into "between" and "within" components. Its main drawbacks are that it is somewhat more complicated to calculate and that its interpretation is not as easily grasped intuitively. The use of any of the three indexes presented here as a policy aid would be substantially better than subjective judgment. (Author/JM)

Abstract

Evidence from studies of memory for meaningful materials such as sentences and prose passages is reviewed in this paper with emphasis on its implications for the nature of the memory representation. It is argued that models of memory which involve the retrieval of stored copies of originally presented material cannot account for two crucial phenomena: (1) the retention of meaning in spite of losses in memory for specific wording, and (2) the "recall" of information which could only have been obtained by inference. Views of memory which include varying degrees of constructive, interpretive, and reconstructive processes are considered as alternatives to the copy model. These alternatives include theories based on psycholinguistic constructs and visual imagery, as well as positions involving the abstraction and reconstruction of information by means of more general integrative representations. Abstract

This document discusses several of the most significant analytic meanings to be found in enrollment data, with the expectation that some of the already developed analytic tools, when properly tuned, can be applied to enrollment and similar data. The Induced Course Load Matrix (ICLM) is a theoretical concept developed from situations in business and industry where talk is of inputs and outputs. The input in this document is students, faculty and staff, facilities, and finances. However, students, faculty, and staff are also decision makers and cannot be manipulated in the same way as more tangible variables used in business. After consideration of enrollment data and the Induced Load Matrix it appears evident that the ICLM is best suited to macro-level analysis and decision making. The document then attempts to develop a micro-level tool that can be employed in the study of retention and attrition rates in enrollment and is useful for data requiring longitudinal study, such as enrollment statistics that take into account peer group influences. In conclusion, answers such as those sought above cannot be found in the familiar aggregate numbers game. It is more likely that one or more management science tools will play a part in the answers sought. (Author/KE)

Abstract

Order analysis is a measurement technique for the quantitative and generalizable description of complex structures. Relations between the manifest elements of a data matrix and its underlying latent entities and attributes are considered in terms of magnitudes as basic scale units. Magnitude is conceptualized as a difference relation, translated into the binary units of information theory and linked with the functional relations of the propositional calculus of formal logic. Deterministic and probabilistic models of order analysis are developed. The deterministic model elaborates an algorithm for partitioning of binary relations within the context of Guttman-type scaling. The probabilistic model extends these principles within the framework of graph theory; it permits the generalization of ordered structures into their latent domains with a known degree of statistical certainty. Relation of order analysis to factor analysis is discussed, as well as components of isolated binary variation. Order analysis is validated on sets of prestructured, distorted and random data and its utility considered within the general framework of multivariate analysis models. (Author)

Abstract

Background. Until recently, information behaviour scholars have mainly focused on the workplace or educational settings, and defined information as either a tool for problem solving or a means to satisfy needs. This, however, only represents a partial picture of a larger horizon. In some arenas of life, such as serious leisure, people do not seek information to necessarily solve a problem or satisfy an urgent need. They look for information to enjoy a hobby or participate in an entirely voluntary activity. Objectives. The paper introduces transcendental information as a subjective and contextual concept to provide insights on lesser explored corners of the information behaviour scholarship. This concept is compared with existing theories and concepts in the information behaviour area. Method. This conceptual paper is based on a critical literature review of human information behaviour, and reflects on some key concepts in the field, including the nature of information, information needs, information seeking and sharing. The paper also provides a selective literature review of the serious leisure perspective to contextualise the analysis. Results. It is found that transcendental information usually has an aesthetic and intellectual essence. It may be expressed in various imaginative forms and can appear in different non-textual and embedded formats. Moreover, it can generate joyful and inspiring impacts. Abstract

Objective: The present investigation compares the degree of self-citation of Iranian scholarly publications indexed in both Iranian Science Citation (ISC) and ISI’s Web of Science (WoS). The study covers the 2005-2009period. Subject distribution, extent of self-citations, mean differences in self-citation and nature of co-authorships and corporate affiliations were also studied. Methodology: Bibliometric method was deployed. The sample included 1089 articles indexed in ISC and 27729 articles indexed in WoS for 2005-2009 periods. Typical samples were taken using regular random sampling. Findings: Results indicated that WoS has the higher rate of co-authorships, citations, and self citations for Iranian articles indexed than ISC. No significance was observed in either databases regarding number of citations and number of authors. Examination of subject scope indicated that while Humanities and Social Sciences have the highest share in ISC, Basic Sciences are dominant in WoS.

In turn, many evaluations of authors, institutions and journals are based on aggregations upon papers (e.g. h-index). In this work, we explore measures defined on the citation graph that offer a more intuitive insight into the impact of a paper than the superficial count of citations. Our main argument is focused on the identification of influence as an expression of the citation density in the subgraph of citations built for each paper. We propose two measures that capitalize on the notion of density providing researchers alternative evaluations of their work. While the general idea of impact for a paper can be viewed as how many researchers have shown interest to a piece of work, the proposed measures are based on the hypothesis that a piece of work may have influenced some papers even if they do not contain references to that piece of work. 34. The Misinterpretation of a Key Paper in Library Literature.

Abstract

Abraham Kaplan has produced the clearest philosophical insights in all of library literature into the real nature of library education by providing an outsider's view of librarianship that (1) explains the "mess" librarians are in; (2) identifies humanism as the firm foundation of their profession; and (3) correlates librarianship with the metasciences. In "The Age of the Symbol--A Philosophy of Library Education," Kaplan has shown that the major problems of librarianship are problems of symbolism, communication, and the intellectual disciplines. These problems go unresolved, however, because librarians continue to confuse symbols with symbolic referents, scientific with humanistic approaches to communication, and empirical with intellectual disciplines. The result is a crippling paradox in which the librarians, who ought to be leading in librarianship, want to be followers, and the information scientists, who should be following, want to be leading. This paradox can only be resolved by a truly comprehensive theory of communications that integrates the realities at both ends of a wire connecting human beings to their physical and cultural environments, a theory that explains all of their complex interactions with both of those environments. It is divided into four major sections: Part I analyzes the concepts of equality and equity and determines the possible interpretations attributed to each; Part II analyzes information equity, focusing on the clarification of information related concepts and the synthesis of these concepts with equality and equity interpretations; Part III enumerates and explains the more practically-oriented issues involving information equity policy decisions and indicates the connection between conceptual and practical considerations; Part IV discusses general policy recommendations, indicating the direction in which information equity policy statements and programs should proceed. Abstract

Expressing the need for a description of communication that is equally applicable to all the social sciences, this report develops a general model of the communication process based upon the principle of convergence as derived from basic information theory and cybernetics. It criticizes the linear, one-way models of communication that have dominated past research for failing to represent the complexity of the communication process and identifies the hidden biases of these models, especially toward individual psychology and mechanistic explanations. After discussing the advantages of a cybernetic explanation, which uses the concepts of information, feedback, networks, and purpose, the author develops a further definition of information and meaning. Finally, a paradigm of communication as a cyclical process of convergence and divergence over time is presented. (Author/MM)

Abstract

Objective: This paper tries to analyse and visualize the co-authorship network of institutions in 1351 papers published in 7 knowledge and information science journals in Iran from 1387 through 1391.Methodology: In this paper, we use scientometric and social network analysis to study the collaboration network of institutions. Overall structure of the network was investigated using a few macro-level metrics like density, connectedness, clustering coefficient, components, mean distance and diameter. Additionally, centrality metrics include degree centrality, betweenness centrality, closeness sentrality, eigenvector, number of adjacent nodes as well as productivity measure were adopted to analyze the performance and status of institutions in the network. UCINET software was utilized for data analysis.Results: Findings of the study revealed that the majority of papers (68.8%) are multi-authored and publications by two authors are the most common type of co-authorship (45.22%). Based on the findings, 63.4% of publications in 7 journals were published through inter-institutional collaboration, which shows that Iranian KIS researchers tend to collaborate more with researchers from other institutions. The co-authorship network of institutions in Iranian KIS papers contains 218 vertices and 1002 cross-institutional collaboration links.
