Ultrahigh‐temperature (UHT) granulites, a prominent feature of Paleoproterozoic orogenic belts, preserve a record of geodynamic processes during the Precambrian (Archean–Paleoproterozoic). Quantitative pressure–temperature–time (P–T–t) paths of these UHT granulites can constrain the tectonic processes and metamorphic evolution in such a tectonic regime. Here, UHT mafic granulites with a high‐pressure (HP) prograde path are first reported in the Diebusige Complex in the Alxa Block, western part of the Khondalite Belt (KB), North China Craton (NCC). The detailed petrographic studies show that two mafic granulite samples preserve corona textures around relict garnet or garnet pseudomorphs (completely replaced by plagioclase), and a third mafic granulite sample has a relatively simple mineralogy with a granoblastic‐polygonal texture. These mafic granulites have similar peak (Tmax) assemblages of clinopyroxene + orthopyroxene + plagioclase + ilmenite ± garnet ± amphibole ± quartz + melt. Phase equilibrium modelling and Ti‐in‐amphibole and rare earth element (REE)‐based thermometries all constrain similar peak conditions of ~880–950°C/~8.5–10 kbar implying an ~100°C/kbar apparent geothermal gradient for these mafic granulites. Based on the corona textures or pseudomorphs of garnet and mineral assemblages, we identified a Pmax (~14 kbar) prograde stage before the Tmax stage. Thus, a clockwise P–T path with heating and decompression followed by near‐isobaric cooling (IBC) is recorded from these UHT mafic granulites. In addition, zircon and apatite SHRIMP or LA–ICP–MS U–Pb dating yields an age interval of ~1.81–1.7 Ga, which is interpreted as representing the cooling time from ~900–800°C to ~575°C at the middle‐upper crustal levels (<25 km deep) for these mafic granulites, with an ~1.5–2.5°C/Myr cooling rate. The new P–T–t path of these rocks includes high‐pressure prograde, UHT peak, and slow cooling retrograde processes, which implicates a post‐collisional tectonic setting for UHT metamorphism in the KB and the processes of collision, exhumation, and cooling of the KB. This study presents the results of petrology, SHRIMP zircon U–Pb analysis, conventional Fe–Mg geothermobarometry, REE (rare earth element)‐based geothermobarometry, and phase equilibrium modelling, for newly discovered ultramafic‐mafic granulites (garnet pyroxenite with minor plagioclase and garnet‐bearing granulite) in the Namakkal Block of the southern granulite terrain (SGT), India. Results from this study shed light on the growth, evolution, and thermal state of lower continental crust during the Neoarchean, as a cross‐section of the Archean lower continental crust is well‐exposed in the SGT. SHRIMP zircon U–Pb dating of a garnet pyroxenite sample (18ID‐41) yielded a weighted mean 207Pb/206Pb age of 2531 ± 6 Ma, which is the same within uncertainty as one weighted mean SHRIMP metamorphic zircon 207Pb/206Pb age of 2519 ± 9 Ma from mafic granulite sample (18ID‐43). In addition, zircon U–Pb analyses also yielded an apparent 207Pb/206Pb age of 2474 ± 3 Ma (1σ) for the garnet pyroxenite, and a weighted mean 207Pb/206Pb age of 2489 ± 8 Ma for the mafic granulite. Thus, the timing of metamorphism of the ultramafic‐mafic granulites was constrained to be ca. 2530–2470 Ma. The peak metamorphic phase assemblage of the garnet pyroxenite is grt–cpx–pl–ilm–liq, which was modelled to be stable at 1058–1172°C/7.8–11.6 kbar, whereas the retrograde mineral assemblage of grt–cpx–hbl–pl–qz–ilm–liq occurred at 877–888°C/9.9–11 kbar. The mafic granulite was demonstrated to record similar peak and retrograde metamorphic P–T conditions to those of the garnet pyroxenite but have a relatively small P–T range of the peak mineral assemblage. The ultrahigh temperature metamorphism of these ultramafic‐mafic granulites was further confirmed by the temperature results (1057–1087°C) from the REE‐in‐two‐pyroxene thermometer. As a result, a retrograde metamorphic P–T path characterized by near‐isobaric cooling from ~1080°C at ~10 kbar to ~900°C at ~10 kbar was constructed for these rocks, which is consistent with an extremely high thermal state that persisted for ca. 60 Ma in the lower crust. The timing and mechanism of ultrahigh-temperature (UHT) granulite facies metamorphism is critical to understanding the tectono-thermal evolution of granulite terranes and their relationships to supercontinent assembly. Here we document late Paleoproterozoic UHT mafic granulites from the Diebusige Complex in the eastern Alxa Block, North China Craton. These rocks occur as lens within felsic gneiss, marble, and garnet-bearing pyroxenite and contain representative granulite-facies minerals such as garnet, clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and Ti-rich amphibole. Based on phase equilibria modelling, Ti-in-amphibole (Amp) thermometer, and rare earth element (REE)-based thermometers, UHT metamorphic condition of 948 – 1048 ℃/11 – 14 kbar was obtained for the peak metamorphic stage, which was followed by retrograde metamorphism under lower amphibolite – greenschist facies (401 – 565 ℃/5.2 – 7.1 kbar). Zircon U-Pb dating and trace element systematics suggest that the protolith of the studied UHT mafic granulites emplaced at ∼ 1.97 Ga. This is followed by rapid metamorphism to UHT conditions and slow cooling in the lower crust during 1.96 – 1.86 Ga, suggesting a long-lived hot orogen in the eastern Alxa Block, possibly resulting from Andean-type subduction – accretion in the eastern Alxa Block. Combining chronological and metamorphic P-T data on UHT metamorphism from adjacent areas, our results support a long-lived late Paleoproterozoic (ca. 2.0 – 1.8 Ga) hot orogen that extends at least from the Khondalite Belt to the eastern Alxa Block. • The Sandmata Complex preserves Neoarchaean protolith ages of 2.68–2.42 Ga. • Zircon-monazite ages indicate peak granulite facies metamorphism at 1.90–1.78 Ga. • Sandmata quartzofeldspathic gneisses record an isobaric cooling P–T path. • The complex was tectonically active up to the Neoproterozoic (∼0.90–0.78 Ga). The Sandmata Complex in the Aravalli Craton of northwestern India experienced syn- to post-collisional high-grade metamorphism and migmatization related to the 1.9–1.7 Ga Aravalli orogeny. Garnet-bearing quartzofeldspathic gneisses are an important rock type in the Sandmata Complex. Their prograde assemblage is represented by garnet cores and inclusion minerals Bt + Pl + Qz, whereas the assemblage Pl + Kfs + Qz + Bt matrix + Sil + Ilm, along with chemically homogeneous garnet porphyroblasts, represents peak metamorphism. Post-peak retrograde metamorphism is reflected in the growth of muscovite, chlorite and biotite, and diffusion adjustments in garnet rims. Mineral paragenesis, mineral chemistry, conventional thermobarometry, and phase equilibrium modelling indicate P–T conditions of 6.7–10.2 kbar at 725–830 °C for peak metamorphism, and 4.8–6.9 kbar at 450–610 °C for post-peak retrogression. The P–T conditions determined from the quartzofeldspathic gneisses define a near-isobaric cooling P–T path. In contrast, previously studied high-grade pelitic gneisses and metagranitoids from the Sandmata Complex define an isothermal decompression P–T path. U–Pb dating of magmatic zircon cores in the quartzofeldspathic gneisses provides the crystallization age of their felsic protoliths as ∼ 2.52 Ga. Zircon and monazite geochronology show that peak metamorphism occurred at ∼ 1.90–1.78 Ga and thus shortly preceded the emplacement of the Gyangarh-Asind igneous suite and Anjana granite, previously dated at ∼ 1.72–1.64 Ga. A model of oceanic crust subduction followed by continent–continent collision during the Aravalli orogeny can explain granulite facies metamorphism in the Sandmata Complex. The combined results of this and previous studies support the operation of modern-style plate tectonic processes involving subduction and continental collision during Palaeoproterozoic time. We also identify a younger (∼0.90–0.78 Ga) metamorphic episode, preserved mostly in recrystallized monazite grains elongated parallel to the final deformation fabric, likely related to the South Delhi orogeny. Abstract The Fraser Zone is a major lithotectonic domain of the Albany–Fraser Orogen, Western Australia, which records Proterozoic modification of the margin of the Archean Yilgarn Craton. The Fraser Zone is volumetrically dominated by gabbroic rocks and their metamorphosed equivalents. However, little is known of the pressure–temperature–time (P–T–t) history or the geodynamic setting of these mafic rocks. When considered within the context of existing P–T constraints from spatially-associated metapelitic rocks, modelled phase equilibria suggest that both the unmetamorphosed gabbros and the granulite facies metagabbroic rocks equilibrated at 950–900 °C and ∼7 kbar, interpreted to record the conditions of magmatic crystallisation and peak metamorphism, respectively. These data support the view that mafic magmatism was the thermal driver for high- T , low- P granulite facies metamorphism. The absence of garnet from the metagabbroic rocks, and the lack of evidence for its former presence (i.e., as inclusions), argues that, during metamorphism, the rocks never reached pressures above those they attained at the thermal peak. Coronæ of zircon around ilmenite in the magmatic rocks reflect a local supply of Zr as it exsolved from ilmenite, permitting earlier growth of zircon around ilmenite than elsewhere during melt crystallisation. U–Pb dating of coronal zircon (1315 ± 5 Ma) and a discrete magmatic zircon grain isolated from ilmenite (1296 ± 5 Ma) constrain the duration of magmatic crystallisation between ca. 10 and 30 Ma. Zircon in a metamorphosed gabbro constrains the timing of granulite facies metamorphism to 1293 ± 6 Ma, synchronous with final crystallisation of the mafic magmas. Based on the implied metamorphic evolution of these rocks and that of the surrounding supracrustal package, along with existing isotopic and geochemical data, we suggest the Fraser Zone probably formed in a backarc, or perhaps an intracontinental rift setting, and records successive emplacement of gabbroic rocks into a thick, sediment-filled basin. The older gabbroic rocks record hydration and reaction with the devolatilising and/or partially molten metasedimentary rocks into which they were emplaced. Subsequent granulite facies metamorphism of these hydrated rocks was driven by the heat provided by the intrusion of younger mafic magmas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Precambrian granulite terrane of south India is known for the preservation of regional-scale high to ultrahigh-temperature (HT-UHT) metamorphic rocks. In the Madurai block, the largest crustal block in the terrane, a significant proportion of these HT-UHT rocks occur along a narrow belt referred to as the Kambam ultrahigh-temperature belt. Understanding the P-T-t evolution of these HT-UHT granulites is vital in decoding the spatial and temporal evolution of the Madurai block in relation to other crustal blocks. Here we present the petrology, mineral chemistry, phase equilibrium modelling, and accessory mineral (zircon, monazite, rutile and apatite) geochronological and geochemical data for a hitherto unreported sapphirine granulite from the Kambam ultrahigh-temperature belt. Combined mineral reaction and phase equilibrium modelling indicate extreme P-T conditions up to 1130 °C at 11 kbar. The geometry of the P-T path is clockwise with initial isothermal decompression followed by near isobaric cooling. LA-ICPMS U-Pb geochronological studies on accessory phases report two distinct thermal events: (i) Paleoproterozoic high-T event and associated crustal anatexis at ∼2.5 Ga from zircons and (ii) Neoproterozoic UHT event at ∼550 Ma from monazites. The monazite ages suggest a 50–60 Ma prolonged thermal event, attributed to Ediacaran-Cambrian collisional orogenesis. Additional metamorphic pulses are also identified, demonstrating the polydeformed crustal evolution history of the terrane. U-Pb age dating of rutile and apatite in the sample provide ages of ∼458 Ma and ∼392 Ma and cooling rates of ∼6 °C/Ma and ∼0.3–2 °C/Ma respectively. This suggests a complex history of slow cooling followed by ultraslow cooling. The results bring forth the significance of the Kambam ultrahigh-temperature belt in understanding the tectonothermal evolution of Madurai block and provide additional evidence for long-lived Neoproterozoic UHT orogenesis in south India. The Madurai block which forms the central crustal block in the Precambrian Southern Granulite Terrane, south India preserves crustal evolution history with record of multiple magmatic and metamorphic episodes ranging from early Archaean to late Neoproterozoic. Documenting the precise chronology and tectonothermal evolution of these events are of paramount importance to correlate with other crustal blocks in Southern Granulite Terrane as well as to link with other continental fragments of East Gondwana. The present study focuses on hitherto unreported location within a key section of Madurai block along the transcrustal Suruli shear zone known as the Kambam ultrahigh-temperature belt. This belt is noticeable for the proliferous occurrence of HT-UHT metapelites with an overall clockwise P-T trajectory. Samples of garnet-spinel granulite, cordierite-spinel granulite and associated granite gneiss were subjected to detailed petrographic, thermobarometric and geochronologic analysis. Combined petrography, mineral reaction, geothermobarometry and pseudosection modelling of the granulite samples reveal HT-UHT metamorphic conditions with clockwise P-T path demonstrating significant decompression and cooling. LA-ICPMS U-Pb dating of zircon, monazite and rutile phases within these samples constrain the timing of metamorphism as well as cooling. U-Pb zircon ages of ~2500 Ma from the granulites points to new evidences for Paleoproterozoic high-grade metamorphism in the area where monazite U-Pb ages at ~593 and ~557 Ma throw light into the imprints on ~36 Ma prolonged Neoproterozoic thermal event attributed to Pan African collisional orogeny. LA-MC-ICPMS Hf isotopic record from zircon cores point to the role of significant juvenile crustal melting/anatexis during Paleoproterozoic. In addition, several cryptic metamorphic pulses are also identified evincing the polydeformed evolutionary history of these rocks. The ca. ~432 Ma cooling age record from rutile estimates an average cooling rate of ~3.0 °C/Ma over a time period of ~125 Ma, classifying Madurai block as a classic slow cooled granulite terrane with long lived UHT orogenic history.
