Late Mesozoic granites are present throughout the Jiaodong Peninsula in eastern China, but the petrogenesis of these granites, the magma sources, and the geodynamic setting of the magmatism remain unclear. This paper presents new zircon U–Pb geochronological and Lu–Hf isotopic and whole‐rock geochemical data for the Late Jurassic Queshan pluton in the Shandong Peninsula, an area that represents the boundary between the Jiaobei and Sulu ultrahigh‐pressure (UHP) terranes. Laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry zircon U–Pb dating yields Late Jurassic ages from 158 ± 1 to 153 ± 1 Ma for the pluton in addition to a small number of inherited zircons that yield ages that cluster at 2410, 1831–1776, 750, and 209–202 Ma. Zircons from different samples have similar 176Hf/177Hf values (0.281926–0.282255) and variably negative εHf (t) values that range from −26.5 to −15.1 (weighted mean of −22.9 ± 0.9). The corresponding two‐stage Hf model ages range from 2,869 to 2,154 Ma, with a weighted mean value of 2,645 ± 54 Ma. These data indicate that the magmas that formed the Queshan pluton were derived from multiple sources, including the lower crust of the North China (NCC) and Yangtze (YC) cratons, as well as collision‐related alkaline rocks. The whole‐rock geochemical compositions of the samples indicate that the granites are weakly peraluminous, are high‐K and calc‐alkaline with I‐type affinities, and have high contents of Sr, low contents of Y and Yb, high (La/Yb)N and Sr/Y values, and positive Eu anomalies (δEu = 1.20–1.65), indicating an adakitic affinity. This indicates that the Queshan granites formed from magmas generated by partial melting of a thickened region of the crust (>50 km) associated with eclogite, garnet amphibolite, or amphibolite residual material. The genesis of the Late Jurassic granites are also likely to have been influenced by the collisional orogeny between the NCC and YC and continued subduction of the Izanagi Plate. Thickening of the lower crust associated with this continental collisional event occurred before the magmatism, with further compression and thickening of the lower crust caused by the low‐angle subduction of the Izanagi Plate beneath northeastern China being the main geodynamic driver of the formation of the granites in this region. The Tietonggou pluton is mainly composed of gabbroic diorite and diorite. The petrology, zircon U-Pb age, and geochemistry of the Tietonggou diorite have been studied to determine its petrogenesis and metallogenic significance. The diorite samples have 56–58 wt% SiO2 and 11–14 wt% Al2O3 and are peraluminous and sodic (Na2O/K2O = 1.29–2.07). All the samples are enriched in light rare earth elements (LREEs) and large-ion lithophile elements (LILEs; e.g., Rb, Ba, and Sr) but depleted in heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) and high field strength elements (HFSEs; e.g., Zr, Nb, and Ta), suggesting subduction-related affinities. The rocks have narrow ranges of (206Pb/204Pb)t (18.5–19.0), (207Pb/204Pb)t (15.71–15.75), and (208Pb/204Pb)t (38.4–39.0) ratios, respectively. Zircons from the Tietonggou diorite yielded a weighted average U-Pb age of 132.86 ± 0.92 Ma (MSWD = 0.48), whilst those from the nearby Laowa diorite yielded 129.72 ± 0.61 Ma (MSWD = 1.05). This suggests that the rocks represent Early Cretaceous plutons, coeval with the peak lithospheric thinning in eastern North China Craton (NCC). The magma likely originated from partial melting of the enriched lithospheric mantle and was contaminated by ancient lower NCC crustal materials. This paper presents new zircon U Pb ages and Hf isotope data, and whole-rock geochemical and Sr Nd isotopic data, for lamprophyres in the western Shandong area of China. These data provide new insights into the nature of the lithospheric mantle beneath the eastern North China Craton (NCC) during the Early Cretaceous. The lamprophyres are divided into low-Ti (TiO 2 < 1.1 wt%; Ti/Y < 270) and high-Ti (TiO 2 > 2 wt%; Ti/Y > 370) suites, where the Xiaya and Jingziyu minettes are defined as low-Ti lamprophyres and the Jingziyu pyroxene lamprophyres are defined as high-Ti lamprophyres. The igneous zircons yield weighted-mean ages of 126, 132, and 130 Ma for the low- and high-Ti lamprophyres, respectively, indicating these units formed during the Early Cretaceous. The inherited zircons within the Xiaya and Jingziyu minettes define six (2517, 1852, 725, 375, 276, and 236 Ma) and two (2523 and 462 Ma) main age populations, respectively. In comparison, the inherited zircons from the Jingziyu pyroxene lamprophyres yield two main age populations (2523 and 1848 Ma). The low-Ti lamprophyres are enriched in the light rare earth elements (LREE) and large-ion lithophile elements (LILE), depleted in the heavy REE (HREE) and high-field-strength elements (HFSE), and have small negative Eu anomalies. In comparison, the high-Ti lamprophyres are enriched in the LREE but are slightly depleted in the HFSE. The low-Ti lamprophyres also have high 87Sr/86Sr(t) ratios (0.7121–0.7123), low ε Nd (t) values (−18.81 to −18.62), and contain igneous zircons with relatively high ε Hf (t) values (generally between −9.94 and −3.36). In comparison, the high-Ti lamprophyres have 87Sr/86Sr(t) ratios of 0.7066–0.7068, ε Nd (t) values from −5.01 to −4.64, and contain igneous zircons with ε Hf (t) values from −11.77 to −8.50. These data indicate the low-Ti lamprophyres formed from primary magmas generated by the partial melting of an enriched region of the lithospheric mantle that was previously strongly modified jointly by subduction breakoff of the downgoing Yangtze Craton basement material and delamination of the lower continental crust within the NCC. In comparison, the magmas that formed the high-Ti lamprophyres were generated by the partial melting of an enriched region of the lithospheric mantle that was weakly modified by interaction with the lower continental crust of the NCC. The Ri-Qing-Wei Basin is a newly discovered Late Mesozoic rift basin on the eastern Shandong coast in recent years. Thick, continuous deposited source rocks are found in the Lingshan Island scientific drilling project. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the distribution and hydrocarbon generation potential of source rocks in this area. Organic geochemical experiments were carried out on samples from the core of LK-1 and outcrops in the Lingshan Island, the Laoshan area, and the Jimo Zhougezhuang area to evaluate the maturity, abundance, and type of organic matter in source rocks. The results show that the cumulative thickness of the source rocks in the study area is more than 500 m, and the TOC content is generally greater than 1.0%. The organic matter type is good (mainly type II1 and type II2 kerogen) and the Ro value is more than 2.0. The thermal evolution degree of the organic matter is high with natural gas predominantly generated. We carried out Rock-Eval, PY-GC and gold tube experiments on low-maturity samples of Laikong 2 and established a chemical kinetic model to quantitatively evaluate the study area in combination with sedimentary burial history and thermal history data. The results show that the total resources of the five sags in the study area are about 476 billion cubic meters, and the average resource intensity is about 82.2 million cubic meters/km2. Among them, the resource intensities of the Lingshan Island Sag and Laoshan Sag are 112.6 million cubic meters/km2 and 98.8 million cubic meters/km2, respectively. Abstract: Petrology, geochemistry and Re–Os isotopes of peridotite xenoliths from Yantai (Shandong Province) are reported in this paper with aims of constraining the age and evolution of the lithospheric mantle beneath eastern North China Craton. The Yantai xenoliths contain predominant harzburgites and subordinate lherzolites. Although their highly incompatible element compositions have been modified by metasomatism, the heavy rare earth element (REE) and Y contents in the Yantai peridotites are primarily governed by partial melting, which started in garnet stability field then continued in spinel stability field after breakdown of garnet to two pyroxenes and spinel. Such a polybaric melting produced a residual mantle in which degree of depletion decreases with depth. Os isotopic ratios of the most refractory peridotites (Al2O3 <1.2wt.%) range from 0.117 to 0.126, yielding T RD model ages between 0.5 and 1.7Ga. This suggests co-existence of Phanerozoic and Proterozoic mantle beneath Shandong Province. Alternatively, the whole lithospheric mantle beneath Yantai was likely formed during the Phanerozoic, given the resemblance of their Os isotopic ratios with those of abyssal peridotites. The latter interpretation is consistent with the fact that all the studied samples plot along the oceanic trend in a plot of forsterite content in olivine versus olivine mode. It also gains further support from the contrasting ε Nd between the late Mesozoic lithospheric mantle and Cenozoic mantle beneath the region. Abstract: The self-similar is a common phenomena arising in the field of geology. It has been shown that geochemical element data, mineral deposits, and spacial distribution conform to a fractal structure. A fractal distribution requires that the number of objects larger than a specified size have a power-law dependence on size. This paper shows that a number of distributions, including power-function, Pareto, lognormal, and Zipf, display fractal properties under certain conditions and that this may be used as the mathematical basis for developing fractal models for data exhibiting such distributions. The summation method is developed on the basis of fractal models to determine thresholds for Au data in Shandong Province, China. The anomalous area is enclosed by contours which have contour values greater than or equal to threshold (200×10−9) and contains known large-sized and super large-sized gold mineral deposits. Lower Cretaceous sedimentary rocks of Lingshan Island, located along the continental margin of East Asia, have received increased attention. The Lingke-1 core mainly belongs to the Lower Cretaceous Laiyang Group. We investigate provenance, tectonic setting, palaeoclimate and palaeoredox conditions in the study area using elemental geochemistry, thereby elucidating the depositional history of the Lower Cretaceous sediments and reconstructing the palaeo-environment. To achieve this, 90 siltstones and 76 mudstones were sampled from this core and other outcrops on Lingshan Island. The chemical index of alternation (CIA) values for the majority of the samples and the bivariate diagrams indicate that the sedimentary rocks were subjected to minor weathering processes. Geochemical results suggest that source rocks for the region are felsic igneous and metamorphic rocks, along with minor proportions of intermediate igneous rocks. Major- and trace-element discrimination diagrams, deciphering the tectonic history, indicate that source rocks mainly originated from the continental island-arc and active continental margin. Several representative geochemical indices and the bivariate plots based on elemental contents show that the Laiyang Group was predominantly deposited in arid conditions. Sr/Ba values suggest a palaeosalinity transition from brackish to saline, demonstrating a depositional transformation from lacustrine facies for the lower Laiyang Group to marine facies in the upper Laiyang Group. U/Th and V/(V+Ni) ratios and Ce anomalies in the rocks indicate anoxic conditions. We conclude that the conspicuous decline in the trends of the above three geochemical indices, ranging between 400 and 800 m, may be related to the latest Hauterivian oceanic anoxic event. The Neoarchean basement rocks of the Qixingtai region in the northwest of western Shandong, eastern North China Craton are divided into western and eastern domains, separated by a ductile shear zone. The western domain is mainly composed of early Neoarchean tonalitic and supracrustal rocks, and the eastern domain is composed of late Neoarchean crustally‐derived granite with diverse early Neoarchean enclaves up to several kilometres long of supracrustal and gneissic TTG‐diorite rocks. This study reports an integrated field, whole‐rock geochemistry and zircon U–Pb‐Hf study on the granites and their enclaves in the eastern domain. The supracrustal enclaves are mainly composed of meta‐basaltic and meta‐ultramafic rocks and are the same in lithological association and formation time as the 2,750–2,700 Ma Liuhang "Formation" in the western area. The TTG‐diorite enclaves can be divided into early and late groups. Magmatic zircons from early TTG‐diorite samples have U–Pb ages of 2,731 ± 17 to 2,748 ± 13 Ma and εHf(t) values of +2.7 to +9.5, whereas trondhjemite samples of the late group have U–Pb zircon ages of 2,588 ± 18 to 2,606 ± 12 Ma and εHf(t) values of +0.6 to +6.5. The Hf isotopic signatures on magmatic zircon from the >2,700 Ma diorite‐tonalites indicate that they are predominantly juvenile crustal additions, probably with minor involvement of older crust in their genesis, as given by tDM (Hf) ages ranging back to 2.92 Ga. The eastern granites range from monzogranite to syenogranite in composition and commonly have negative Eu anomalies, indicating residual plagioclase in the source region. Magmatic zircons from two granite samples have U–Pb ages of 2,516 ± 24 and 2,527 ± 18 Ma and εHf(t) values of +1.0 to +7.0. A fine‐grained syenogranite dyke contains inherited early Neoarchean zircons with εHf(t) values of +1.6 to +7.4. The isotopic signatures of the late Neoarchean granites that dominate the eastern domain show that they were derived from partial melting recycling of older continental crust recognized in the region – early Neoarchean rocks formed as a result of juvenile crustal additions. This is a common signature for late Archean crustal evolution throughout much of the North China Craton, and is the hallmark of some other Archean terranes, such as the Dharwar Craton of south India. The Liaoshang gold deposit in the Jiaodong area of the Shandong Province is best known for its super‐large size. Situated on the north‐eastern margin of the Jiaolai Basin, it forms a part of the Jiaobei terrane of the North China Block. Approximately 20 ore bodies within the Liaoshang gold deposit have been explored; of these, four are structurally controlled gold‐bearing pyrite–dolomite vein‐type deposits. These ore bodies lie in an NE‐trending altered fracture zone and are characterized by their thickness and high‐grade ores. The wall rocks of the ore bodies consist of Paleoproterozoic Jingshan Group metamorphic rocks and Mesozoic granites. Gold is hosted mainly in pyrite and dolomite. The ore is divided into two subtypes—the dominant pyrite–dolomite vein subtype and the subordinate altered rock subtype which contains pyrite and dolomite. Fluid inclusions within dolomite indicate that the main metallogenic period was dominated by a CO2–NaCl–H2O fluid system that had low‐moderate salinity, low density, high abundance of CO2, and a small amount of N2. The ore formed at 81‐ to 94‐MPa pressure and between 2.97‐ and 3.24‐km depth. Research on the S, Pb, C, O, and He–Ar isotopes in the gold‐bearing minerals suggests that the ore‐forming material was mainly crustal in origin, with some degree of crust–mantle mixing. The application of Rb–Sr isotope analysis to gold‐bearing pyrite yields a metallogenic age of 105.5 ± 9 Ma. The Sm–Nd isotope analysis of dolomite yields an age of 104.8 ± 5.1 Ma. We propose that gold mineralization in the Jiaodong area occurred in two phases: the early Early Cretaceous for gold deposits in the north‐west and the late Early Cretaceous for gold deposits in the east. Eastern Shandong is one of the most economically important regions for ore‐producing sedimentary‐metamorphic graphite deposits in China. The Liugezhuang and Daliangzikou graphite deposits in the Pingdu–Laixi Graphite Belt are typical examples. The ores in the Liugezhuang deposit and Daliangzikou deposit are typically gneiss/granulite type and biotite granulite type, respectively. Graphite occurs as stratabound layers of slender flakes associated with biotite, clinopyroxene, and plagioclase and as slender flakes and disseminated grains associated with biotite and filling tiny fractures in mineral grains. The mineral associations indicate that the ore rocks can be classified into four metamorphic facies: (a) amphibolite granulite facies, Cpx (Hy) + Opx (Di) + Pl ± Hbl ± Qz; (b) amphibolite facies, Hbl + Pl + Cpx (Opm) + Ep + Bt + Ms + Qz ± Chl ± Mic; (c) high‐grade greenshist facies, Hbl + Pl + Ep + Bt + Chl + Qz ± Cpx; and (d) low‐grade greenshist facies, Ep + Chl + Pl + Bt + Ms + Chl + Qz + Rt. Study of the variation in graphite crystals and fixed carbon with increasing metamorphic grade suggests that more than one metamorphism process (graphitization) occurred during ore formation. Geochemical analysis indicates that the primary condition under which the Liugezhuang and Daliangzikou graphite deposits formed was a marine facies sedimentary environment of which the material source was terrestrial weathering detritus and compounds and also a participation of terrestrial material in the graphite deposits. Trace element data suggest that the sedimentary condition was from a reducing condition in the Liugezhuang graphite deposit to a weaker reducing condition in the Daliangzikou graphite deposit, whereas samples from a Jingshan Group stratum show multiple oxidation–reduction conditions but dominantly oxidation. Carbon isotope analysis indicates that the carbon source of the Liugezhuang graphite deposit was organic, whereas that of the Daliangzikou graphite deposit was mainly organic carbon but with some inorganic participation. The depositional environment and tectonic setting of the newly identified Ri‐Qing‐Wei Basin are the focus of controversy. In order to solve these questions, the geochemical characteristics of siltstones from Laiyang Group in Taolin area are analysed in detail. The siltstones present similar contents of SiO2 and Al2O3 compared with upper continental crust (UCC) and post‐Archean Australian Shale (PAAS) and are classified as wacke on chemical classification plot of clastic rocks. The trace elements are characterized by the depletion of transition elements (Sc, V, Cr, Ni, and Cu). The chondrite‐normalized REE patterns exhibit the enrichment of LREE and depletion of HREE, as well as significant negative Eu anomalies. Relative high Index of Compositional Variability (ICV) values suggest the siltstones are compositionally immature and the sediments of first‐cycle. The low Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) and Plagioclase Index of Alteration (PIA) values of the samples indicate the weak source weathering condition. Moreover, the characteristics of A‐CN‐K plot suggest K‐metasomatism occurred after burial. A series of palaeo‐environment indexes imply that the Laiyang Group were deposited in a reducing marine environment with hot and arid climate. Major‐ and trace‐based tectonic setting discriminant diagrams all indicate that the Ri‐Qing‐Wei Basin was formed in an active continental margin setting; this conclusion is also supported by the analysis of the coeval igneous rocks. Based on the investigations of the subduction of the Palaeo‐Pacific plate and the development of Cretaceous basins on the eastern Eurasia, we propose that Ri‐Qing‐Wei Basin was formed in response to the delamination of the North China Craton and the subduction of Izanagi plate. The geological units in Shandong Province, North China are important parts of the North China Craton and offer important insights into their crustal evolutionary history. This work compiled 611 sets of Nd isotopic data of Archean-Mesozoic rocks from Shandong including the Luxi, Jiaobei, and Sulu terranes, which provided important constraints for crustal growth and reactivation. Nd-depleted mantle model ages (TDM) of Archean rocks with positive εNd(t) values showed that ca. 2.9 and 2.8-2.7 Ga were the most important periods of crustal growth in the Jiaobei and Luxi terranes, respectively, while the period of ca. 2.6-2.5 Ga in the Jiaobei terrane likely indicated a coherent event of crustal growth and reworking. During the Proterozoic, multi-stage rifting and collisional orogenic events possibly led to the reworking of Archean crust in the source region. The Nd isotopic data of the Paleoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic rocks from Sulu indicated significant reworking of older crust with juvenile magmatic input. Crustal reactivation occurred during the Mesozoic. The younger TDM ages of the Mesozoic rocks with low negative εNd(t) values indicated that a juvenile crustal/mantle component was added to the ancient basement. The reactivation reflected significant crust-mantle interaction via the mechanism of crustal subduction and mantle-derived magma un-derplating, or possibly asthenospheric upwelling. Our work also attempted to establish the crustal correlation between Shandong and Korea (including the Gyeonggi massif, Ogcheon belt, and Yeongnam massif). The TDM age distribution provided evidence favoring the affinity relationship between the Gyeonggi massif and Ogcheon belt of South Korea and the Jiaobei and Sulu terranes of Shandong, while the Yeongnam massif was more correlated with the South China Block. The depositional environment of the Upper Permian quartzose sandstone (Kuishan sandstone in Shihezi Formation of Upper Permian) in the North China epicontinental basin is controversial. In order to test the previous hypotheses, we analyzed sedimentological characteristics of the Kuishan sandstones in outcrops and boreholes, and carried out trace element geochemical analysis by electron probe microanalyzer. Three lithofacies were recognized, including normal-graded conglomerate (Cng), trough and planar cross-bedded coarse sandstone (CStpc), and planar cross-bedded medium sandstone (MSpc). Normal-graded conglomerate (Cng) formed in the meandering river or deltaic distributary channels. Trough and planar cross-bedded coarse sandstone (CStpc) formed in meandering river or distributary channels of near-source deltaic plain. Planar cross-bedded medium sandstone (MSpc) formed in the siliciclastic beach with high- to moderate-energy conditions. By the petrology and trace elements analysis, three relatively large-scale transgressions were revealed. Each transgression was reflected by the lower content of Ba and ratios of Fe/Mn, and the high content of B and ratios of B/Ga. The ratios of Ni/Co of all samples are all lower than 2, suggesting oxygen-enriched shallower water environment during deposition of the Kuishan sandstones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Post-orogenic mafic dikes are widespread across eastern Shandong Province, North China Craton, eastern China. We here report new U–Pb zircon ages and bulk-rock geochemical and Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic data for representative samples of these rocks. LA-ICP-MS U–Pb zircon analysis of two mafic dike samples yields consistent ages of 118.7 ± 0.25 million years and 122.4 ± 0.21 million years. These Mesozoic mafic dikes are characterized by high (87Sr/86Sr) i ranging from 0.7082 to 0.7087, low ϵNd(t) values from −17.0 to −17.5, 206Pb/204Pb from 17.14 to 17.18, 207Pb/204Pb from 15.44 to 15.55, and 208Pb/204Pb from 37.47 to 38.20. Our results suggest that the parental magmas of these dikes were derived from an ancient, enriched lithospheric mantle source that was metasomatized by foundered lower crustal eclogitic materials prior to magma generation. The mafic dikes underwent minor fractionation during ascent and negligible crustal contamination. Combined with previous studies, these findings provide additional evidence that intense lithospheric thinning beneath eastern Shandong occurred at ∼120 Ma, and that this condition was caused by the removal/foundering of the lithospheric mantle and lower crust. Tectono-geochemical samples were systematically collected from 5 drillcores along the No. 304 exploration line and at the −310 m level under the pit in the mining area, totalling 705 samples from the metamorphic rocks, granites, altered rocks and orebodies, and were determined for their contents of 20 kinds of elements including Au, Ag, As, Sb, Hg, Cu,-Pb, Zn, Sn, Bi, Mo, Co, Ni, Mn, Cr, V, Ti, Ba, Rb, Sr, etc. By using the Surfer software the geochemical exploration line profile maps for the 20 kinds of elements and the curves for the element geochemical contents of individual ore vein groups were established. In conbination with the geochemical map analytical method and Gregorian's zoning index calculation method, the vertical, longitudinal and lateral zonation sequences of the elements were ascertained and the geochemical three-dimentional zonation model of the primary halos was established on the basis of the analysis of metallogenic structures and alteration zonation. Coupled with the results of analysis of the geology and geochemistry data, it may be concluded that the process of alteration of granites in the mining area is also accompanied with the process of gold enrichment and mineralization. With the intensification of alteration of granites from granite →potash feldspathization granite →sericite-quartz alteration granite, sericite-quartz rocks →beresitized granite, pyrite sericite-quartz rock, silicified granite →gold ore, the contents of thiophile ore-forming elements such as Au, Ag, As, Cu, Bi, Mo, Pb, Sb, Hg, and Sn tended to increase. Factor analysis of trace elements indicated: factor F2 (Au, Ag, Cu, Sn, As) represents the element association brought in at the main stage of hydrothermal metallogenesis; factor F4 (Bi, Sb) and factor F5 (Pb, Zn) represent the ore-forming element association supperposed during the late stage of Au-bearing sulfides. By using the Gregorian's zoning index and map analysis method we have ascertained the primary halo axial zonation sequence (form frontal halo →tail halo): Pb, Zn, Mn, Ba, Sr, Rb, As, Sb, Ag, Cu, Sn, Mo, Au, Bi, Hg, Ti, Cr, V, Ni, and Co. The geochemical anomalies in the mining area display a tendency of lateral plunging to WS, which is consistent with the lateral plunging of orebodies and mineralization alteration zone. Comprehensive analysis of the results of investigations on ore-controlling structures, mineralization-alteration zonation and geochemical zonation of the primary halos indicates that the gold orebodies in this area are still of greater extension. Deep-seated cracked gas exploration was achieved great breakthrough in Es of the Minfeng area on the northern slope of the Dongying Sag. Carbon isotopic and molecular compositions studies revealed the characteristics of wet gas and a normal trend of carbon isotopic composition. Empirical cutoff points of δC and δC and light hydrocarbon compositions distinguished the cracking gas as sapropelic gas. Variations in i/ nC, i/ nC and δC further confirmed that the gas was cracked from residual kerogen. Source characteristics indicated that the gas was derived from mature-highly mature source rocks of Es with kerogen type II being dominant mixed with some oil-cracking gas. Burial history modeling indicated that there were two hydrocarbon charging periods in Es reservoirs. The first period refers to the Guantao-Minghuazhen stage dominated by oil charging, while the second period refers to the Minghuazhen stage and has been dominated by cracked gas charging till now. With the rapid industrialization and urbanization, more attention is turning to heavy metal contamination in the soil environment. To assess the potential environmental risk on soil, a comprehensive geochemistry study on heavy metal was performed in Laizhou, eastern China, using 3834 surface soil samples (0–20 cm, regular grid of 1 × 1 km2) and 60 layered soil samples (0–200 cm) were analyzed. The average concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Zn and Pb were 7.60 mg·kg−1, 0.15 mg·kg−1, 45.50 mg·kg−1, 19.10 mg·kg−1, 44.00μg·kg−1, 18.70 mg·kg−1, 51.40 mg·kg−1 and 29.00 mg·kg−1, which were lower than the threshold levels of the Grade II criteria of China national environment quality standard for soil, but the contents of As, Cd, Hg, and Pb were higher than background values of eastern Shandong Province surface soil. Fractionation analysis showed that the potential bioavailability in surface soils decreases in the order of Cd > As > Cu > Ni > Zn > Cr > Pb > Hg. Soil assessments with enrichment factor, contamination factor, Nemerow composite index, geo-accumulation index and potential ecological risk index, indicate the soil in Laizhou is contaminated strongly with As, Cd and Hg and a moderately Cr, Ni, Cu and Zn. The level of Pb pollution is between moderate to high. Multivariate analyses suggest that Cr and Ni were derived mainly from natural sources, and As, Cd, Pb, while Hg mostly came from anthropogenic sources. Cu and Zn were from a mixture of anthropogenic and natural sources. Our results demonstrate that more attention should be paid to monitoring soil quality in the heavily polluted site. Coal and oil shale are both organic matter-rich sedimentary rocks. However, their sources of organic matter and their depositional environments are different. The present study focuses on the Palaeogene Lijiaya Formation sequence in the Huangxian Basin, Shandong Province, East China, which has oil shales showing marine geochemical indicators overlain by coals indicating marine regression. We investigated the C1 coal seam and underlying OS2 oil shale layers, compared their geochemical and mineralogical characteristics, clarified the details of their constituents, in order to elucidate the features of their sources, their depositional environments, and the post depositional processes in the context of the geological evolution of the basin. The Al2O3/TiO2 (18.1–64.9) and TiO2/Zr ratios (28.2–66.5) in the C1 coals and OS2 oil shales, respectively, suggest a felsic to intermediate source, and the Mesozoic granite on the South of Huangxian Fault may be one of the provenances of these sediments. The low sulphur content (0.53–0.59%) and low Sr/Ba ratios (0.32–0.67) suggest a freshwater depositional environment for the C1 coals. In contrast, the higher total sulphur contents (0.60–1.44%), the higher Sr/Ba ratios (0.31–1.11%), and the occurrence of calcareous shells, indicate seawater intrusions during deposition of the oil shales. The V/Ni, V/(V + Ni), and V/Cr ratios of the OS2 oil shale suggest oxic to suboxic conditions with a distinct change in palaeo-redox between the lower and upper parts of OS2 seam. The high boron contents in C1 coals (average, 504 ppm) is related to the high content of analcime (with the correlation coefficient of 0.96), and the high concentration of boron was attributed to a secondary enrichment by epigenetic hydrothermal solutions. The occurrence of idiomorphic-authigenic albite in association with analcime and quartz in veins in the coals suggests that albite is a product of a reaction between analcime and silica, both of volcanic origin. The reaction takes place at about 190 °C, indicating that the area was affected by hydrothermal fluids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
