The wear and friction characteristics of the CuSn10P1 copper alloy are influenced by various factors, including the sliding velocity and applied force. An investigation has been conducted to examine the influence of various loads and sliding velocities on the wear characteristics of the thixoextruded copper alloy. The annealed alloy exhibits a homogeneous distribution of the solid phase, and a liquid island presents in the solid phase. The major phases consist of α-Cu, Cu41Sn11, and a few Cu3P phases. The average coefficient of friction (COF) is between 0.6 and 1.0. SEM-EDS and three-dimensional topography instruments were used to analyze the surface topography and wear rate of reciprocating wear. When the sliding velocity was 5 mm/s, the wear rate increases from 0.07 mm3/Nm to 0.226 mm3/Nm as the load increases from 3 N to 9 N, in accordance with Archard's dry wear law. The worn surface exhibited groove, granular, and layered debris, and the predominant characteristics of the wear were abrasive wear and delamination wear. A good understanding of the interplay between the cutting tool edge radius, elastic recovery, friction, and contact pressure is essential for better modeling of ploughing forces during micro-scale cutting. This study conducts plunging tests on an ultra-precision CNC with engineered tungsten carbide cutting tools on commercially pure titanium alloy. The cutting tool edge radius is prepared to be around 3.5–4 μm, which resembles those cutting tools used in micro scale machining. During plunging tests, the micro cutting tool is given a sinusoidal movement with an amplitude close to edge radius of the tool as the work material is rotated at a constant speed. The residual depth profiles of the webs corresponding to the commanded depths were investigated in detail to identify elastic recovery rate. The cutting and thrust force measurements during plunging experiments together with identified elastic recovery rate was employed in an analytical model of micro scale machining to obtain the variations of contact pressure and coefficient of friction as a function of commanded depth. Due to the scale of the experiments that were performed, the effects of surface topography of the cutting tool and possible alignment errors are also considered in the analytical model. A linear relationship between the contact pressure and elastic recovery has been identified during ploughing-dominated machining conditions for the work material and the cutting tool pair considered in this study. The aim of this study was to identify the areal surface parameters that correlated with lowering of sliding friction. Different ground surfaces were created on stainless steel and the lubricated sliding friction generated at the contact interface with a flat-faced aluminum pin was studied. The frictional force encountered is an order of magnitude lower for a P1200-finished surface than the other ground surfaces. Using 3D surface profilometry, a unique surface parameter ratio "Spk/Sk" was found to predict the frictional performance of these surfaces. When this surface parameter ratio was less than 1, average sliding friction was close to 0.1. When this ratio was greater than 1, the coefficient was an order of magnitude lower. Using energy dispersive spectrometry, such surfaces after wear showed the presence of a uniform dispersed layer of iron oxide on the surface of the pin. This was absent on the surfaces having high friction, indicating the role of the steel counter surface in building this beneficial transfer layer. Scanning electron microscopy provided topography images to visualize the surface wear. The manuscript presents the synthesis and dry sliding wear performance of Al7075 alloy‐based composites. Five compositions namely Al7075 alloy, Al7075+3 vol % molybdenum disulfide, Al7075+3 vol % molybdenum disulfide+3 vol % zirconium diboride, Al7075+3 vol % molybdenum disulfide+6 vol % zirconium diboride and Al7075+3 vol % molybdenum disulfide+9 vol % zirconium diboride were stir cast and characterized for hardness, x‐ray diffraction, microstructure, and tribological properties. In‐situ formed zirconium diboride particles increase the hardness of Al7075 alloy whereas molybdenum disulfide shows the opposite trend due to its self‐lubricating nature. X‐ray diffraction analysis identifies subsequent phase particles in the matrix while microstructural images exhibit the dispersion and morphology of reinforcement particles. The wear tests and friction coefficient were analyzed with variations of sliding velocity, normal load, sliding distance, and compositions. Further, the obtained wear results were also correlated with microstructure and wear surface topography. Al7075+3 vol % molybdenum disulfide composite shows the lowest coefficient of friction because of its self‐lubricating nature. Al7075+3 vol % molybdenum disulfide+9 vol % zirconium diboride hybrid composite exhibits the lowest wear rate at high velocity as well as at high load and can be potentially used in manufacturing and tribological applications. The tribological performance of two polymeric friction modifiers, one based on an ester‐based compound and another based on an ethoxylated fatty ester and an organic friction modifier, oleamide, was studied at 50, 90 and 140°C using a Mini Traction Machine equipped with optical interferometry and electrical contact resistance. The ability to form surface film is found to vary among the friction modifiers and with temperature and rubbing duration. Despite a thinner film being formed, polymeric friction modifier (PFMs) exhibited lower friction and wear than oleamide at all the studied temperatures. Further, the PFMs reduced boundary friction more effectively at higher temperature. In accordance with lower boundary friction, a smoother surface topography characterized by low wear was exhibited by PFM lubricated surfaces at higher temperatures. Scanning electron microscopy‐energy dispersive x‐ray analysis and time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry provided insights on the tribofilm formation. The improvement in the tribological performance of PFMs is attributed to temperature‐induced conformation transition of adsorbed polymer chains on the surface. This paper investigates the effect of the type of movement on the tribological properties of an AlTiN coating applied to a disc made of HS6-5-2C steel. Tribological tests were carried out with a tribometer operating on a ball-disc friction apparatus moving in to-and-from as well as in rotary motion. The tests were carried out under technically dry friction conditions, subject to the application of a cutting fluid used during machining in grinding, turning, milling, drilling and cutting processes. A scanning microscope was used to observe the morphology of the surface, the morphology of the AlTiN coating, and to determine its chemical composition and assess wear mechanisms. The topography of the surface was analysed before and after carrying out the friction and wear tests using a confocal microscope with interferometric mode. The results of the provided tests indicate that the cutting fluid used in the tests reduced the coefficient of friction in both rotary and the sliding -- reciprocating motion about 75% and 65% respectively. It has also contributed to a reduction in linear wear in the sliding -- reciprocating motion about 22%. Friction is one of the main phenomena accompanying sheet metal forming methods, affecting the surface quality of products and the formability of the sheet metal. The most basic and cheapest way to reduce friction is to use lubricants, which should ensure the highest lubrication efficiency and at the same time be environmentally friendly. Due to the trend towards sustainable production, vegetable oils have been used in research as an alternative to petroleum-based lubricants. The analysis of friction in sheet metal forming requires an appropriate tribotester simulating the friction conditions in a specific area of the sheet metal being formed. Research has used a special strip drawing tribometer, enabling the determination the value of the coefficient of friction in the blankholder zone in the deep drawing process. Quantitative analysis of the friction phenomenon is necessary at the stage of designing the technological process and selecting technological parameters, including blankholder pressure. This article presents the results of friction testing of 1.0338 (DC04) steel sheets using a strip drawing test. The experimental tests involved pulling a strip of sheet metal between two countersamples with a rounded surface. The tests were carried out on countersamples with different levels of roughness for the range of contact pressures occurring in the blankholder zone in the deep drawing process (1.7–5 MPa). The values of the coefficient of friction determined under dry friction conditions were compared with the results for edible (corn, sunflower and rapeseed) and non-edible (Moringa, Karanja) vegetable lubricants. The tested oils are the most commonly used vegetable-based biolubricants in metal forming operations. Multi-layer artificial neural networks were used to determine the relationship between the value of the contact pressure, the roughness of the countersamples, the oil viscosity and density, and the value of the coefficient of friction. Rapeseed oil provided the best lubrication efficiency during friction testing for all of the tested samples, with an average surface roughness of Sa 0.44–1.34 μm. At the same time, as the roughness of the countersamples increased, a decrease in lubrication efficiency was observed. The lowest root mean squared error value was observed for the MLP-4-8-1 network trained with the quasi-Newton algorithm. Most of the analysed networks with different architectures trained using the various algorithms showed that the kinematic viscosity of the oil was the most important aspect in assessing the friction of the sheets tested. To exactly describe lubrication problems modeling micro-scale influence in rough lubricated contact is unavoidable. In this study a novel computational scheme for lubricated problem is presented based on two-scale homogenization method, which facilitates solving the two-scale problem. Homogenization model of mass fluxes is implemented at the micro-scale domain, and represents the influence of surface topography. A linearization method is developed to derive finite derivatives of mass fluxes at the micro-scale domain defined by scale separation. The key strength of the proposed procedure is the finite difference derivative coupling which represents the lubricated problem inclusive of the effect of surface topography. The effectiveness of the proposed multiscale scheme is validated by comparing with the deterministic method. This article presents the results of an analysis of the influence of friction process parameters on the coefficient of friction of steel sheets 1.0347 (DC03), 1.0338 (DC04) and 1.0312 (DC05). A special tribometer was designed and manufactured in order to simulate the friction phenomenon occurring in the blankholder area in deep drawing operations. Lubricant was supplied to the contact zone under pressure. The value of the coefficient of friction was determined under various contact pressures and lubrication conditions. Multi-layer artificial neural networks (ANNs) were used to predict the value of the coefficient of friction. The input parameters considered were the kinematic viscosity of lubricants, contact pressure, lubricant pressure, selected mechanical properties and basic surface roughness parameters of sheet metals. The value of the coefficient of friction of 1.0312 steel sheets was predicted based on the results of friction tests on 1.0347 and 1.0338 steel sheets. Many ANN models were built to find a neural network that will provide the best prediction performance. It was found that to ensure a high performance of ANN prediction, it is necessary to simultaneously take into account all the considered roughness parameters (Sa, Ssk and Sku). The predictive performance of the 'best' network was greater than R2 = 0.98. The lubricant pressure had the greatest impact on the coefficient of friction. Increasing the value of this parameter reduces the value of the coefficient of friction. However, the greater the contact pressure, the smaller the beneficial effect of pressure-assisted lubrication. Many devices, including touchscreens and robotic hands, involve frictional contacts. Optimizing these devices requires fine control of the interface’s friction law. We lack systematic methods to create dry contact interfaces whose frictional behavior satisfies preset specifications. We propose a generic surface design strategy to prepare dry rough interfaces that have predefined relationships between normal and friction forces. Such metainterfaces circumvent the usual multiscale challenge of tribology by considering simplified surface topographies as assemblies of spherical asperities. Optimizing the individual asperities’ heights enables specific friction laws to be targeted. Through various centimeter-scaled elastomer-glass metainterfaces, we illustrate three types of achievable friction laws, including linear laws with a specified friction coefficient and unusual nonlinear laws. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of surface texture on the subsurface characteristics of contact interfaces under elastohydrodynamic lubrication condition. As a typical contact form of gears and bearings, the optimization of friction characteristics at the elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) interface has attracted the attention of scholars. Laser surface texturing is a feasible optimization solution, but there have been concerns about whether the surface texture of high-pair parts will affect their fatigue life. Design/methodology/approach: To examine the impact of texture preparation on the subsurface characteristics of high-pair interfaces under EHL conditions, a point contact EHL model is developed that takes into account the effect of textured surface topography. The pressure and thickness of the oil film are calculated as input parameters under different loads and entrainment velocities. The finite element method is used to simulate the impact of textures with varying diameters, densities and depths on the subsurface characteristics of the elastohydrodynamic interface. According to ISO 25178, analyze the relationship between 3D topography parameters and subsurface characteristics and study the trend of friction characteristics and subsurface characteristics based on the results of the ball on disc friction tests. Findings: The outcomes suggest that under different rotational velocity and load conditions, the textured surfaces exhibit improved friction reduction effects; however, the creation of textures can result in significant subsurface plastic deformation and local peeling. The existence of texture makes the larger stress zone in the subsurface layer closer to the surface, leading to fatigue failure near the surface. Reasonable design parameters can help enhance the attributes of the subsurface. A smaller Sa and a Str greater than 0.5 can achieve ideal subsurface properties on the textured surface. Originality/value: This paper investigates the influence of surface texture on the friction and subsurface characteristics of EHL interfaces and analyzes the impact of surface texture on interface contact performance while achieving lubrication improvement functional characteristics. Purpose: Hydro-viscous drive (HVD) clutches are widely used in equipment requiring soft start, such as fans and pumps, to transmit torque and adjust speed by changing the gap distance between friction pairs. This paper aims to propose a novel two-parameter evaluation method for HVD during the mixed lubrication stage. The objective is to develop an effective model that establishes the relationship between these parameters and the actual surface topography. Design/methodology/approach: In the presented methods, the fractal features of the real manufacturing surface are calculated based on the power spectrum function by the ultra-depth three-dimensional microscope. After that, the hybrid friction model of the friction plate is established based on mixed elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication theory, boundary friction model and fractal theory. Then the torque and load bearing characteristics of the clutch are obtained, and the influences of the surface fractal features are investigated and discussed. Finally, the Weierstrass–Mandelbrot function is adopted for the surface topography characterization and evaluation. Findings: The results indicate that the proposed method exhibits good accuracy, while the speed difference between the friction pair exceeds 2,500 rpm. It is concluded that this paper proposed a way to evaluate the torque and loading capacity of HVD considering the real manufacturing surface topography and is helpful for surface optimization. Purpose: The aim of this study is to experimentally analyze the friction and wear responses of different steels to different surface films generated in oil-lubricated tribological contacts. Design/methodology/approach: Tribological experiments were conducted using a 100Cr6 bearing ball sliding against a V155 carbon steel disk and 316L stainless steel disk, respectively. Lubricants with additives known to form zinc dialkyl-dithiophosphate (ZDDP) or Ca tribofilms were used. Findings: Both of the ZDDP and Ca tribofilms helped stabilize the friction coefficient of the carbon steel and stainless steel. The ZDDP tribofilm could effectively protect the carbon steel from wear, in contrast to the stainless steel, whereas the wear of both carbon steel and stainless steel could be significantly reduced by the Ca tribofilm. In the case of neither ZDDP nor Ca tribofilms formation, the 100Cr6 ball was worn by the V155 disk and generated a special surface topography. A polishing wear mechanism was proposed to explain the wear of the 100Cr6 ball. Originality/value: This study clearly shows the different friction and wear responses of steels to the different surface films and the response is dependent on the tested steel. The modification of the surface topography at the micro- and nanoscale is a widely established as one of the best ways to engineering the surface of materials, to improve the tribological performances of materials in terms of load capacity and friction. The present paper reviews the state of the art on laser surface texturing by exploiting the technique of direct laser writing for tailoring the coefficient of friction, highlighting the effect of the textures' arrangement on the lubricated conformal and non-conformal contact behavior. The grinding process via friction at the micro-scale in a mill with stones is considered a variable combination of contacts, with two-body (the asperities of lower millstone in direct contact with the asperities of upper millstone) and three-body (micro-particles of ground seeds trapped between the asperities of lower and upper stones of the mill) contacts. Three elements are described: (1) the mechanical contact of the asperities of the lower and upper millstones to predict pressures on asperities by modeling; (2) tests on a millstone sample covered with grinding particles; and (3) tests on a wafer sample formed by the millstones with the grinding particles between them. This paper highlights the combined effects of the micro-scale friction via individual measurements, using an analytical model to sum these effects and validating the model by performing several experiments. An efficiency grind by friction assumes the grain's movement and interaction between the seeds and solid surfaces, and is highlighted through theoretical and experimental studies. Topography analysis of the surface of the millstones reveals the model of microscopic frictional force. Endpoint measurements (the traces of the surface topography evolution) enable model verification in the grinding process. Thus, the results obtained in the grinding process in the stone mills via friction have practical utility through research benefits. Therefore, they allow for the improvement of quality, reliability, flexible grinding, quality control of the flours, and uniformity degree (fineness/shredding). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Everyday, we interact with screens, sensors, and many other devices through contact with the skin. Experimental efforts have increased our knowledge of skin tribology but are challenged by the fact that skin has a complex structure, undergoes finite deformations, has nonlinear material response, and has properties that vary with anatomical location, age, sex, and environmental conditions. Computational models are powerful tools to dissect the individual contribution of these variables to the overall frictional response. Here, we present a three-dimensional high-fidelity multilayer skin computational model including a detailed surface topography or skin microrelief. Four variables are explored: local coefficient of friction (COF), indenter size, mechanical properties of the stratum corneum, and displacement direction. The results indicate that the global COF depends nonlinearly on the local COF, implying a role for skin deformation on the friction response. The global COF is also influenced by the ratio of the indenter size to the microrelief features, with larger indenters smoothing out the role of skin topography. Changes in stiffness of the uppermost layer of skin associated with humidity have a substantial effect on both the contact area and the reaction forces, but the overall changes in the COF are small. Finally, for the microrelief tested, the response can be considered isotropic. Chromium and silicon are often introduced to increase the performance of TiAlN hard coatings in dry tribological contacts. The addition of Cr and Si during a high-power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS) deposition process leads to high-quality TiAlCrSiN films. In this paper, the analysis of friction and wear of these films is conducted by oscillation tribometry under dry conditions with a subsequent mapping of the surface topography. Both abrasion- and adhesion-dominated conditions are realized using different steel counter bodies. Oscillation-frequency-dependent experiments show a significant impact of the compositional variation on friction and wear. It is shown that the TiAlCrSiN coating investigated has a higher coefficient of friction and a lower wear resistance compared to counterparts made of 100Cr6. The friction coefficient could be reduced by using a V2A counterpart. The results can be understood in terms of a reduced adhesion of both oxidic and metallic wear debris at the TiAlCrSiN surface. Surface quality has a significant impact on the service life of machine parts. Grinding is often the last process to ensure surface quality and accuracy of material formation. In this study, a high-quality surface was developed by determining the coefficient of friction in grinding a quartz fiber-reinforced silica ceramic composite. By processing the physical signals in the grinding process, a multi-objective function was established by considering grinding parameters, i.e., surface roughness, coefficient of friction, active energy consumption, and effective grinding time. The weight vector coefficients of the sub-objective functions were optimized through a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on the decomposition (MOEA/D) algorithm. The genetic algorithm was used to optimize the process parameters of the multi-objective function, and the optimal range for the coefficient of friction was determined to be 0.197~0.216. The experimental results indicated that when the coefficient of friction tends to 0.197, the distribution distance of the microscopic data points on the surface profile is small and the distribution uniformity is good. When the coefficient of friction tends to 0.216, the surface profile shows a good periodic characteristic. The quality of a grinding surface depends on the uniformity and periodicity of the surface's topography. The coefficient of friction explained the typical physical characteristics of high-quality grinding surfaces. The multi-objective optimization function was even more important for the subsequent high-quality machining of mechanical parts to provide guidance and reference significance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Electropolishing at high current densities without agitation of the electrolyte results in a pitting phenomenon that produces dimple-like surface features. Although pitting is unfavorable in the electropolishing process, its effect on surface modification, such as surface texturing, has not been thoroughly investigated. Surface topography and chemical composition analyses of electropolished steel revealed surface pits and an oxide surface layer, indicating the presence of surface texture and coating. The resulting surface is characterized by negative skewness and high kurtosis values. The tribological behavior of the electropolished steel-bronze pair is investigated by evaluating coefficients of friction and bronze wear using sliding tests conducted in mixed and boundary lubrication regimes. The results are compared to those of the ground steel-bronze pair. In the mixed and upper range of the boundary lubrication regime, coefficients of friction reduction up to 30% and shorter running-in phases are observed for electropolished steel (electropolished steel μavg = 0.019 vs. ground steel μavg = 0.028). In contrast, the coefficient of friction increased in the lower range of boundary lubrication regime by 50% (electropolished steel μavg = 0.098 vs. ground steel μavg = 0.065). Electropolishing, as a cost- and time-effective method applicable to complex geometries, presents an alternative method for achieving surface modifications aimed at friction reduction and improved tribological behavior for non-conformal contacts in the boundary and mixed lubrication regimes. During the operation of the guide rail pair, the accuracy of the guide rail pair is decreased by friction and wear, and the overall performance of the machine tool is directly affected. The influence of surface micro-features of the slider raceway on the dynamic friction factor of the guide rail pair is analyzed in this paper. The relationship between the geometric characteristics of the surface micro-features and the dynamic friction factor is studied, and a prediction model of the dynamic friction factor is established. Meanwhile, the correctness and rationality of the predicted model is verified by the orthogonal experiments of the friction force. It is found that the dynamic friction factor increases with the increase of the groove depth, the height of the peaks and peak–valleys on the surface of the slider raceway. The above research provides a basis for the study of the friction and wear characteristics of guide rail pairs and lays a foundation for improving its friction and wear performance. A model hydrodynamic lubrication tribometer consisting of two hydrodynamic journal bearings working under thin film conditions was developed to investigate the mechanisms of hydrodynamic friction with low-viscosity fluids and the role of surface effects. A small nominal radial clearance of about 5 µm was considered between the two surfaces. This fully instrumented setup provides in situ information on the sheared fluid film in terms of simultaneous measurements of film thickness; localization and extension of the cavitation zone, with a resolution of 30°; nominal friction torques up to 0.5 N m, with an accuracy of 0.05 mN m; temperature; and the position of the shaft for velocities up to 12 000 rpm. To illustrate the capability of the Osiris tribometer, thin hydrodynamic film measurements were performed on smooth surfaces. The results are presented here, and the thermal effects, acceleration, and inertia contributions are discussed. Finally, the influence of the surface topography using textured surfaces was demonstrated and the role of adsorbed layers on the surface due to fluid formulation was highlighted. The purpose of this work was to study the effect of roller burnishing process on tribological properties of 36CrNiMo4 steel. The experiments were performed under dry and starved lubrication contact conditions. The influence of selected parameters such as applied load, sliding speed, and sliding distance on the coefficient of friction and wear volume was investigated. The Taguchi technique was used to estimate the parameters significantly affecting the tribological properties. The levels of tested input factors were as follows: applied load—5, 10, and 15 N, sliding speed—0.24, 0.48, and 0.72 m/s, and sliding distance—160, 282, and 404 m. The results revealed that load was the most dominating factor that affects the wear volume and the coefficient of friction. The influence of other input factors was smaller. Regression analysis was also performed to predict tribological behavior. The results demonstrated good agreement between experimental and predicted results. Abrasive water jetting is an effective dressing method for a fixed abrasive pad (FAP) and can improve FAP machining efficiency and the impact of abrasive water jet (AWJ) pressure on the dressing effect; moreover, the machining state of FAP after dressing has not been thoroughly studied. Therefore, in this study, the FAP was dressed by using AWJ under four pressures, and the dressed FAP was subjected to lapping experiments and tribological experiments. Through an analysis of the material removal rate, FAP surface topography, friction coefficient, and friction characteristic signal, the influence of AWJ pressure on the friction characteristic signal in FAP processing was studied. The outcomes show that the impact of the dressing on FAP rises and then falls as the AWJ pressure increases. The best dressing effect was observed when the AWJ pressure was 4 MPa. In addition, the maximum value of the marginal spectrum initially rises and then falls as the AWJ pressure increases. Aluminium alloy sheets cause many problems in sheet metal forming processes owing to their tendency to gall the surface of the tool. The paper presents a method for the determination of the kinematic friction coefficient of friction pairs. The determination of coefficient of friction (COF) in sheet metal forming requires specialised devices that 'simulate' friction conditions in specific areas of the formed sheet. In this article, the friction behaviour of aluminium alloy sheets was determined using the strip drawing test. The 1-mm-thick 6082 aluminium alloy sheets in T6 temper were used as test material. Different values for nominal pressures (4.38, 6.53, 8.13, 9.47, 10.63, and 11.69 MPa) and different sliding speeds (10 and 20 mm/min.) were considered. The change of friction conditions was also realised with several typical oils (hydraulic oil LHL 32, machine oil LAN 46 and engine oil SAE 5W-40 C3) commonly used in sheet metal forming operations. Friction tests were conducted at room temperature (24 °C). The main tribological mechanisms accompanying friction (adhesion, flattening, ploughing) were identified using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The influence of the parameters of the friction process on the value of the COF was determined using artificial neural networks. The lowest value of the COF was recorded when lubricating the sheet metal surface with SAE 5W40 C3 engine oil, which is characterised as the most viscous of all tested lubricants. In dry friction conditions, a decreasing trend of the COF with increasing contact pressure was observed. In the whole range of applied contact pressures (4.38–11.69 MPa), the value of the COF during lubrication with SAE 5W40 C3 engine oil was between 0.14 and 0.17 for a sliding speed of 10 mm/min and between 0.13 and 0.16 for a sliding speed of 20 mm/min. The value of the COF during dry friction was between 0.23 and 0.28 for a sliding speed of 10 mm/min and between 0.22 and 0.26 for a sliding speed of 20 mm/min. SEM micrographs revealed that the main friction mechanism of 6082-T6 aluminium alloys sheet in contact with cold-work tool steel flattens surface asperities. The sensitivity analysis of the input parameters on the value of COF revealed that oil viscosity has the greatest impact on the value of the COF, followed by contact pressure and sliding speed. Demolding is the key step of micro‐injection molding (μIM), which influences the molding quality of polymer parts to a great extent. The essence of demolding is to overcome interface interactions between the mold cavity surface and the part surface, which is closely related to factors such as the cavity surface topography and process parameters. However, a theoretical model predicting the demolding force of μIM is still lacking, resulting in the difficulty of improving the quality of demolding in μIM. Therefore, a comprehensive demolding force model is proposed to clarify the demolding mechanism of μIM. The model focuses on the adhesion behavior and friction behavior in the special contact mode formed by the replication effect of μIM. The theory proof and computation results indicate that the cavity surface topography determines the contact mode of the mold‐part interface (MPI), which in turn changes the real interface contact area, the composition mode of adhesion stress, and the friction forms, thereby affecting the adhesion and friction force during demolding. In addition, the process parameters can also change the contact mode of MPI as the process parameters have a great effect on the filling capacity and the degree of replication, thereby influencing the demolding process. It has been widely recognized that there are influences of static friction characteristics in a bolted joint on pre-tightening and service reliability. This study proposed a static friction coefficient model of joint surfaces based on the modified three-dimensional fractal model. A method of measuring the static friction coefficient of joint surfaces was investigated to verify the accuracy of model. The results showed that calculated value of the model and measured value of experiment are highly matched. Furthermore, the influential mechanisms of material, pressure, and surface topography were investigated. The relative error between experimental results and model calculations are all less than 15%. AlSi7Mg/SiCp aluminium matrix composites (AMCs) with a high ceramic content (35 vol.%) that were produced by using the field-assisted sintering technique (FAST) were subjected to tribological preconditioning and evaluated as a potential lightweight material to substitute grey cast iron brake discs. However, since an uncontrolled running-in process of the AMC surface can lead to severe wear and thus to failure of the friction system, AMC surfaces cannot be used directly after finishing and have to be preconditioned. A defined generation of a tribologically conditioned surface (tribosurface) is necessary, as was the aim in this study. To simulate tribological conditions in automotive brake systems, the prepared AMC samples were tested in a pin-on-disc configuration against conventional brake lining material under dry sliding conditions. The influence of the surface topography generated by face turning using different indexable inserts and feeds or an additional plasma electrolytic treatment was investigated at varied test pressures and sliding distances. The results showed that the coefficient of friction remained nearly constant when the set pressure was reached, whereas the initial topography of the samples studied by SEM varied substantially. A novel approach based on analysing the material ratio determined by 3D surface measurement was developed in order to obtain quantitative findings for industrial application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For the wear problem of the real rough surface during sliding friction, based on fractal theory and Hertz contact theory, a 3-D fractal rough surface with random characteristics is constructed, and the relationship between the wear deformation depth of the rough peak and its real contact area during the wear process is derived. Furthermore, considering the peak wear and pit scratch phenomena of rough surfaces in different contact states, the time-varying wear calculation model of the worn surface and the compensation wear calculation model of the unworn surface are established, respectively, and the relationship between the instantaneous wear amount and the dynamic change in the rough surface topography is comprehensively characterized. Combined with image digitization technology, the 3-D rough surface is converted into a 2-D discrete plane with 3-D information. According to the dynamic real-time update of the graph data, the iterative calculation of the wear cycle is completed, the time-varying wear calculation method for fractal rough surfaces of friction pairs is proposed, and the dynamic change in the wear amount and surface topography of the rough surface is simulated. The simulation results are experimentally verified and the influence of friction parameters on the surface topography is analyzed. The results show that after the wear simulation, the profile height of the rough surface is reduced, and the average wear depth is 0.02 mm. Increases in rotational speeds and external loads can exacerbate surface wear, surface topography tends to be flattened, and surface carrying capacity increases. The effect of cylinder liners on engine performance is substantial. Typically, the cylinder surfaces were plateau honed. However, recently additional dimples or grooves were created on them. This work discusses the tribological impacts of textured cylinder liner surfaces based on a review of the literature. The results of the experimental research obtained using test rigs and fired engines were critically reviewed. In addition, the results of the modeling are shown. Circular oil pockets and grooves perpendicular to the sliding direction of piston rings of small depths were typically used. Surface texturing of the cylinder liners governs lubrication between the cylinder liner and the piston ring by an increase in oil film thickness near the reversal points leading to reductions in friction force and wear and in the fired engine to a decrease in fuel consumption and to an increase in power or torque. The correct texturing pattern ensures a decrease in the oil consumption, blow-by, and emissions of the internal combustion engine compared to plateau-honed surfaces. Considerations of future challenges are also addressed. Controlling unabridged graphene‐lubricated layers and extending their last times can extend the service life of polymer moving components. The friction reduction behaviors of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) on the tribology performances of high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) were studied based on friction experiments. The mechanical properties, coefficient of friction (COF), surface topography, tribo‐layers wear synthetically charactered to analyses the friction reducing processes. The results showed that the GNP presented a limited friction reduction to HDPE, and it could be controlled by the mass contents of GNP, load and speed. The proper content of graphene maintained the effective GNP tribo‐layers for a long time and led to a long duration of friction reduction. Decreasing load or speed weakened the wear processes, which was useful for maintaining the effective GNP tribo‐layers for a long time, and reduced the COF. Contact and friction are closely related as friction cannot happen without contact. They are widely used in mechanical engineering, traffic, and other fields. The real contact surface is not completely smooth, but it is made up of a series of tiny contact asperities as viewed in the micro-scale. This is just the complexity of the contact and friction behaviors of rough surfaces: the overall mechanical behavior is the result of all asperities which are involved during the contact. Due to the multiplicity of surface topography, the complexity of contact scale, and the nonlinearity of the constitutive material, there are still many open topics in the research of contact and friction behavior of rough surfaces. Based on the perspective of the macroscopic and micro-nano scale contact mechanics, this review gives a brief overview of friction for the latest developments and points out the existing issues and opportunities for future studies. Self-lubricating coatings can be used to increase the service life of machine parts which are subjected to high mechanical loads. The present work is concerned with the combination of nitriding and a subsequent Ti-doped MoS2 coating. The focus of the investigations is on the impact of the compound layer on the wear behavior of the coating since the changes in the surface topography due to compound layer growth and pore formation inside the compound layers are expected to have an impact of the adhesion strength and the wear behavior. For this purpose, compound layers with varying thickness and porosity were formed in the surface area of the material EN31CrMoV9 by gas nitriding. A MoS2:Ti PVD monolayer was applied directly on the compound layers. The wear behavior was evaluated using the pin-on-disc test. The MoS2:Ti solid lubricant coatings show good adhesion on the compound layers without any interlayer. In this study, the influence of the in-situ tribo-oxide-layer on non-lubricated tribological behaviours of LM27/SiCp composites was studied at different applied loads. For this purpose, LM27/SiCp composites were manufactured by stir casting route with reinforcement of different amounts (3–12 wt.%) and different sizes (fine: 1–20 µm and coarse: 106–125 µm) of SiCp. A comprehensive characterization of the friction and wear mechanisms ranging from mild to severe wear for oxidative and delamination at a contact pressure of 0.125–0.624 MPa was discussed. Results indicate that the friction and wear behaviour is strongly influenced by the morphology and the nature of the oxide scale on the wear track. In-situ formation of oxide layers on the contact region of the specimen supports the self-lubrication which supports better wear performance of LM27/SiCp composites. Sliding friction pair composed of contact wire and pantograph slide is the key component of train current collection system. Contact temperature is one of the important factors affecting the current-carrying and wear performance of the friction pair. In this article, sliding electrical contact experiments under different experimental conditions were conducted. Based on the measured contour curve of the slide surface, two fractal parameters of the slide surface were calculated by using the structure function method. And the effect of contact current, contact pressure, and sliding speed on the fractal parameters was discussed. A temperature field simulation model of sliding electrical contact considering two rough contact surfaces was established with COMSOL Multiphysics software. The effect of surface roughness and fractal parameters on contact temperature was analyzed by simulation. When other simulation parameters keep constant, the contact temperature first drops and then rises as the average roughness height of the contact surface increases. The average roughness slope of the contact surface has little effect on the contact temperature under high speed and strong current conditions. The contact temperature continuously decreases with the increase of fractal dimension or the decrease of fractal roughness. The conclusions can be used as a basis for further research on the contact temperature characteristics of the friction pair to improve its electrical contact performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For investigating the effect of mullite as a reinforced fiber of the non-asbestos brake friction material on the performance of brake pads, mullite reinforced composites with different contents (5% and 10%) and shapes (powder-based and fiber-based) were developed, and the physical and mechanical properties of the composites were analyzed. The tribological properties of the composites were tested by a Chase tester followed by the IS-2742 standard, and the worn surface was investigated by three-dimensional surface topography and SEM. The results show that the brake friction material with 5% powdered mullite performs best, having the highest stable friction performance (0.86), the lowest wear rate (3%), the lowest friction variation performance (0.263), and the best fade-recovery performance. With the increase of mullite content, the friction variation, wear resistance, and friction stability of the composites become worse. Meanwhile, the performance of powder-based mullite composites is better than that of fiber-based. The worn surface analysis shows that the fiber-based mullite composite has a higher surface roughness, fewer contact platforms, more wear debris, and peeling pits. In contrast, the powder-based mullite composites have a better surface performance. It provides a practical basis for mullite-reinforced non-asbestos brake friction materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Friction is one of the most important technological phenomena and has a large influence on the flow characteristics of a deformed material. A strip drawing friction test was used to evaluate the friction characteristics of 0.8 mm thick DC04 steel sheets in a sheet forming operation. Friction tests were carried out using a specially designed friction simulator and uniaxial tensile tests were carried out to determine the mechanical properties of the specimens. In addition, measurements of the sheet surface topography were carried out to identify the tribological properties of the specimens. The friction tests were conducted under different pressure and lubrication conditions. A comparative analysis of the results of the friction tests revealed different changes in the surface topography of the test sheets which can be associated with specific friction mechanisms. It was found that the effectiveness of lubrication depends on the lubricant viscosity and nominal pressure. Increasing the nominal pressure intensifies the phenomenon of asperity flattening and reduces the volume of closed pockets of lubricant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on the characteristics of engine working conditions, the ring/liner reciprocating friction tests were conducted to research the effects of three typical cylinder liner surface topographies (honed surface, large dimple texture and small dimple texture) on the tribological performance of production piston ring pack. The experimental results demonstrated the effects of liner textures are different between three kinds of piston rings: for the barrel‐shaped ring‐liner pair, the large or small dimple texture has its specific working condition; for the taper‐faced ring‐liner pair, the oil scraping efficiency and oil distributing stability can be improved by texturing small dimples on liner surface; while the dimple textures have little influence on the friction force of oil control ring‐liner pair. In addition, texturing micro‐dimples on liner is conducive to reducing the surface wear caused by abrasive wear, and the anti‐wear effect of small dimple texture is much better. Polymeric matrix composites are important to the advancement of industries such as the automobile and medicine industries. In this study, the silicon carbide (SiC) particle-reinforced polyamide12 (PA12) matrix composites were fabricated by selective laser sintering system as well as the pure PA12. The surface topographies, mechanical, and tribological properties were further examined. The results indicated that the friction and wear resistance of the composite were improved compared with the PA12 matrix. The compressive strength increased about 8.5%, shore D hardness increased about 6%. The friction coefficient decreased about 10%, the specific wear rate decreased 20% after adding silicon carbide 10% weight to PA12. The wear mechanisms were also discussed. The deformed asperities on the worn surface can withstand more tangential load, and therefore resulted in lower specific wear rate. It was found that the content of SiC particles on the surface were reduced after friction tests. According to the analysis of SEM, EDS, and FTIR results, the wear mechanisms were considered to be the abrasive and fatigue mode. Roughness metrics measured with stylus profilometry are commonly used to explain a floor's friction performance, yet these metrics inconsistently predict shoe-floor friction. While strong correlations have been shown for systematically modified flooring, the goal of this study is to address a gap regarding the predictive ability of these metrics across heterogeneous porcelain flooring products. The predictive ability of four roughness metrics on oily friction performance was assessed using 23 floors and 4 shoe designs. Roughness was moderately correlated with friction (r ranged from 0.374 to 0.760). The present paper introduces a tire/road friction prediction tool based on modelling the tire/road contact as dynamic, viscoelastic, rough, and lubricated. The tool takes into account a considerable part of influent parameters related to tire, road, contaminant, and contact operating conditions: For the tire, the tool takes into account its geometry and rubber material behaviour. For the road, the texture is taken into account via the surface topography. At the contact interface, dry or wet conditions are taken into account through the lubricant depth, viscosity, and density. The operating conditions are taken into account through the normal load, speed, and slip ratio of the tire. The real novelty of this tool lies in its ability to reproduce the complete curve of the tire/road friction coefficient as a function of the slip rate. The validation of the tool is initially done through parametric studies by analyzing the trends of the results, then by performing braking tests on a passenger car at various speeds on different wet roads with different textures. Objectives: This study compared the effects of fluoride mouthwashes on surface topography of orthodontic wires, and static and kinetic frictional forces between the stainless steel (SS) orthodontic brackets and SS and nickel-titanium (NiTi) archwires. Materials and Methods: This in vitro, study evaluated 240 standard SS maxillary central incisor brackets and 0.018, and 0.025×0.019 inch NiTi and SS archwires. The wire-bracket sets (different combinations of wire diameters and types) were exposed to artificial saliva (control), 0.05% sodium fluoride (NaF) for 1 minute daily, or 0.2% NaF for 1 minute, weekly (37°C) for 3 months. The wires were pulled in bracket slots by 5 mm in a universal testing machine (10 mm/minute). The static and kinetic forces were measured. The surface topography of wires was inspected under a scanning electron microscope (SEM; x500). Data were analyzed by SPSS 25. Results: The mean static and kinetic frictional forces of 0.025×0.019 inch NiTi wire in 0.05% NaF group were significantly greater than SS wire (P=0.000). The mean kinetic frictional force in 0.05% NaF was significantly greater than 0.2% NaF and artificial saliva for all wires (P=0.001). The mean static and kinetic forces in 0.2% NaF were significantly greater than in artificial saliva (P=0.025). In all groups, larger wires showed higher mean frictional forces (P=0.000). SEM results revealed higher wire surface roughness in 0.05% NaF followed by 0.2% NaF group. Conclusion: Weekly use of 0.2% NaF mouthwash is recommended during sliding mechanics to minimize frictional forces between the SS and NiTi wires and SS brackets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It has been found that empirical analysis provides a possibility to select the optimum concentration of the repair and restoring composition (RVS), addition of which to the transmission oil provides an increase in wear resistance of 42Cr4 steel under rolling and slip conditions. The structural adaptability of finely dispersed components of the friction geo-modifier RVS, boundary lubricating films and surface layers of metal under friction and under dynamic loading conditions contribute to reducing the wear of contact surfaces. It has been established that the addition of 1.5 % RVS to the lubricant provides a 17 % reduction in the wear of rolling friction pairs, provides hardening of the surface layers of the metal by 1.36 times, compared with the initial surface. The micro-hardness of the surface layers of the metal and its gradient depth distribution, the micro-geometry of the surface layer formed during friction, and the formation of boundary lubricating layers on the friction-activated contact surfaces are key indicators that increase the wear resistance in friction pairs.

Ice friction plays an important role in many engineering applications, e.g., tires on icy roads, ice breaker ship motion, or winter sports equipment. Although numerous experiments have already been performed to understand the effect of various conditions on ice friction, to reveal the fundamental frictional mechanisms is still a challenging task. This study uses in situ white light interferometry to analyze ice surface topography during linear friction testing with a rubber slider. The method helps to provide an understanding of the link between changes in the surface topography and the friction coefficient through direct visualization and quantitative measurement of the morphologies of the ice surface at different length scales. Besides surface polishing and scratching, it was found that ice melts locally even after one sweep showing the refrozen droplets. A multi-scale rubber friction theory was also applied to study the contribution of viscoelasticity to the total friction coefficient, which showed a significant level with respect to the smoothness of the ice; furthermore, the theory also confirmed the possibility of local ice melting. Mechanical losses consume about 40% of the total energy developed by a typical automotive engine. The piston–cylinder system accounts for 50% of the engine frictional losses, of which 70% to 80% is attributed to the piston rings. Inadequate lubrication in the parts of the engine reduces the reliability of engines, since high wear, seizure, or catastrophic failure of the components may occur. Moreover, frictional losses adversely affect the economic use of fuel. Therefore, a marginal reduction in frictional losses enables economic fuel consumption and is a significant achievement. Of the various factors, the surface topography of the piston rings and cylinder liner dominates the lubricant flow between them and influences its tribological behaviour. Surface texturing, lubricant formulation, and lubricant additives have undergone significant technological advancements in recent times to satisfy the global requirements of reduced emission and improved fuel economy. One of the emerging technologies for significant improvement in the tribological properties of mechanical components is laser surface texturing. The precise control of the shape and size of the textures (dimples or grooves) and rapid processing rate makes laser surface texturing advantageous. This article reviews the theoretical and numerical methodologies developed to analyse the impact of surface texturing on the friction behaviour of piston ring–cylinder liner contact. In addition, the article presents future directions for the research work on improving the tribological performance of internal combustion engines.
