In the aquaculture industry, the transfer of lipids from the diet to fish to consumer is of great importance. Special attention is being given by researchers, feed manufactures and farmers to optimize the use of feeds to provide efficient production and the best use of dietary resources in the growth of healthy and nutritious aquaculture species. In this sense, this study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary lipid reduction in seabream (Sparus aurata) and to assess whether reducing dietary lipid level could improve the quality of the fish without impairing their welfare. Two diets were formulated containing 20% (control) and 10% (hypolidimic) lipid levels. Fish were fed the formulated diets for nine weeks and sampling was conducted after three, six and nine weeks in order to follow the trend of the different parameters studied according to the rearing period. The results showed that the decreased dietary lipid did not significantly affect fish growth level. The total lipid content, diminished significantly by 11% and 8% after six and nine weeks, respectively, in fish fed on the lower lipid diet compared with fish fed the higher lipid level. Plasma cholesterol (CHOL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) were significantly reduced only after nine weeks. The total saturated fatty acid (SFA), total monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) and total polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) levels were significantly reduced after six and nine weeks. The oxidative state, as a biomarker welfare was investigated and the results show that catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and sulfhydryl proteins (PSH) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels were not affected significantly during the study. It may be concluded that, under the experimental conditions, the decrease of dietary lipid levels from 20% to 10% could improve the fish quality without impairing fish welfare. Biological mechanisms that lead to multimorbidity are mostly unknown, and metabolomic profiles are promising to explain different pathways in the aging process. The aim of this study was to assess the prospective association between plasma fatty acids and other lipids, and multimorbidity in older adults. Data were obtained from the Spanish Seniors-ENRICA 2 cohort, comprising noninstitutionalized adults ≥65 years old. Blood samples were obtained at baseline and after a 2-year follow-up period for a total of 1 488 subjects. Morbidity was also collected at baseline and end of the follow-up from electronic health records. Multimorbidity was defined as a quantitative score, after weighting morbidities (from a list of 60 mutually exclusive chronic conditions) by their regression coefficients on physical functioning. Generalized estimating equation models were employed to assess the longitudinal association between fatty acids and other lipids, and multimorbidity, and stratified analyses by diet quality, measured with the Alternative Healthy Eating Index-2010, were also conducted. Among study participants, higher concentrations of omega-6 fatty acids [coef. per 1- SD increase (95% CI) = −0.76 (−1.23, −0.30)], phosphoglycerides [−1.26 (−1.77, −0.74)], total cholines [−1.48 (−1.99, −0.96)], phosphatidylcholines [−1.23 (−1.74, −0.71)], and sphingomyelins [−1.65 (−2.12, −1.18)], were associated with lower multimorbidity scores. The strongest associations were observed for those with a higher diet quality. Higher plasma concentrations of omega-6 fatty acids, phosphoglycerides, total cholines, phosphatidylcholines, and sphingomyelins were prospectively associated with lower multimorbidity in older adults, although diet quality could modulate the associations found. There is growing evidence that bioactive fatty acids (BFAs), including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5–3), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6–3), and conjugated fatty acids offer multiple biological benefits and constitute ingredients in functional food development. Despite their potential, novel and alternative/nonconventional sources with unique bioactive properties to meet growing demand remain largely unexplored, poorly characterized, and their effects are not well understood. We systematically reviewed the literature to identify studies on alternative sources of BFAs, their functions, extraction, and application in the food and nutraceutical industry. Twenty studies delved into alternate sources such as plants, bacteria, and algae. Six studies found EPA and DHA as the dominant FA in algal sources, while ten studies reported several BFAs from plant sources. Five studies assessed the health benefits of docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), arachidonic acid (ARA), EPA, γ‐linolenic acid (GLA), and linoleic acid (LA). Eleven studies compared the quality of oil recovered by green solvents, pressurized liquid, supercritical fluid, and assisted extraction methods. Three studies assessed the effects of assisted extraction methods and reported that these approaches improved oil yield and quality, but the findings may have limited applicability to other lipid sources. The quality of nonconventional lipids largely depends on extraction techniques. Four studies suggested methods like 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, LC‐MS/MS; however, their analytical differences make accurate comparison inadequate. In this study, Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) coming from Italian production were purchased in the most important Italian wholesale fish market in different seasons. Biometrical parameters and chemical composition were investigated, with a particular focus on lipid quality and fatty acids (FAs) composition. Results showed a valuable nutritional profile independently by the season of production, represented by high protein and low-fat content, with the lipid portion represented by high amounts of beneficial FAs, particularly the long chain of the n-3 series. Some differences (p < 0.05) were found in carbohydrates and fat content of mussels edible tissues and in FAs profile of specimens collected in different seasons. The most favourable composition in terms of lipid quality was found in mussels collected during spring, corresponding to the moment of the year when mussels store energy reserves in the form of carbohydrates and fat (preparing for the spawning events) and when seawater is enriched in phytoplankton. The lipid health indices calculated (n6/n3, AI, TI) showed optimal values independently by the season of production. The outcomes obtained in this study could help supporting the appreciation of Mediterranean mussels as nutritional valuable seafood product, thus helping encouraging their consumption and promoting the appraisal of this farming sector essential for Italian aquaculture and related to low environmental impact. Microalgae are considered to have great potential as a source of biodiesel. Currently, algae culture has three different trophic modes, i.e., autotrophic, heterotrophic, and mixotrophic, but not all kinds of algae are suitable for heterotrophic and mixotrophic cultivation. In this study, Parachlorella kessleri TY, screened from the soil of Shanxi Province, was heterotrophically and mixotrophically treated with glucose as an organic carbon source, and the physiological and biochemical levels of its growth and lipid accumulation were measured. The results showed that the highest biomass and biomass productivity (1.53 g·L−1 and 218.57 mg·L−1d−1) were attained by P. kessleri TY under mixotrophic cultivation. In comparison, the lowest (0.55 g·L−1 and 78.57 mg·L−1d−1) were attained under heterotrophic culture. Furthermore, heterotrophic and mixotrophic conditions could accumulate more lipids (total lipid contents: 39.85% and 42.92%, respectively), especially the neutral lipids. Additionally, the contents of fatty acids suitable for use as biodiesel raw materials in both heterotrophic and mixotrophic cultures increased, especially the content of C18:1. Moreover, due to the lower biomass of heterotrophic cultivation compared with that from mixotrophic cultivation, the total lipid productivity of heterotrophic conditions decreased. This research aimed to reveal the chemical composition of different fractions obtained by sequential extraction of purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) roots and to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of some of them. Hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and water were used as solvents to obtain the corresponding extracts. A GC-MS analysis was employed to reveal the chemical composition of hexane, chloroform, and ethyl acetate fractions. Conventional and ultrasound-assisted water extraction was performed to isolate inulin-type polysaccharides. Eighteen microorganisms were used for testing the antimicrobial activity of the obtained organic extracts. From GC-MS analysis more than forty compounds were detected in the fractions, including fatty acids, organic acids, fatty alcohols, sterols, and terpenes. Only in ethyl acetate extract were found mannitol and fructose isomers, while in chloroform extract were detected α- and β-amyrin, and betulin. Ethyl acetate fraction demonstrated the highest antimicrobial activity against 11 microorganisms (Bacillus cereus, B. amyloliquefaciens, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella enteritis, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, Saccharomices cerevisiae, and Peniclium sp.). The polysaccharide fractions were structurally characterized by FT-IR and NMR studies as linear inulin having β-(2→1)-linked Fru units and a T-Glc unit linked α-(1→2). Inulin from coneflower roots showed poor flowability, promising bulk and tapped density, swelling properties, and better oil-holding than water-holding capacity. This study demonstrated the potential of coneflower root fractions as a rich source of phytochemicals with antimicrobial activities and potential prebiotic activity due to inulin content (15% yield) and echinacea root as a useful biobased industrial crop/material. Reef-building corals, recognized as cornerstone species in marine ecosystems, captivate with their unique duality as both symbiotic partners and autotrophic entities. Beyond their ecological prominence, these corals produce a diverse array of secondary metabolites, many of which are poised to revolutionize the domains of pharmacology and medicine. This exhaustive review delves deeply into the multifaceted world of coral-derived lipids, highlighting both ubiquitous and rare forms. Within this spectrum, we navigate through a myriad of fatty acids and their acyl derivatives, encompassing waxes, sterol esters, triacylglycerols, mono-akyl-diacylglycerols, and an array of polar lipids such as betaine lipids, glycolipids, sphingolipids, phospholipids, and phosphonolipids. We offer a comprehensive exploration of the intricate biochemical variety of these lipids, related fatty acids, prostaglandins, and both cyclic and acyclic oxilipins. Additionally, the review provides insights into the chemotaxonomy of these compounds, illuminating the fatty acid synthesis routes inherent in corals. Featured Application: The production of lipids by microorganisms is always associated with post-extraction residues, a large part of which are proteins. The thermal properties of oleaginous yeast biomass indicate its stability over a wide range of temperatures, which may facilitate the design of technology and versatile use of its components, especially since its good amino acid composition indicates the nutritional potential of the protein. These could have applications in feed and food products. The biotechnological processing of oleaginous yeast biomass should be comprehensively managed using the zero-waste policy. This study focused on the biomass of the red yeast Rhodotorula obtained from a medium containing waste nitrogen. The cells accumulate lipids in intracellular lipid droplets; however, they are also rich in protein. Therefore, the nutritional value of lipid and protein, according to their fatty acid and amino acid composition, is a necessary step for practical application. For the very first time, this study focused on understanding the influence of temperature on powdered red yeast biomass to study components phase transition or chemical reactions by using DSC. Rhodotorula glutinis var. rubescens was cultivated in a glucose fed-batch in a potato wastewater medium, where the biomass yield was powdered, and lipid and fatty acid, protein, and amino acid compositions were determined. The DSC diagrams of red yeast biomass were characterized by two small and mild endothermic peaks, indicating the presence of fat and the presence of low molecular weight carbohydrates and a distinct peak associated with the presence of crystalline sugars. The nutritional quality of the lipid fraction as atherogenicity (0.223), thrombogenicity index (0.438), PUFA/SFA (0.24), and the n-6/n-3 ratio (3.275) was adequate for the recommendation and resulted from the fatty acid composition. The yeast protein was characterized by a high content of glutamic acid (99 mg/1 g of protein), and a value of essential amino acid index of protein suggested a superior amino acid composition compared to the FAO/WHO standard. To investigate the metabolic adaptation and lipid utilization to overwintering in Onychostoma macrolepis (27.05 ± 1.79 g), fish were sampled at 0, 75, and 150 days, respectively. Fish were randomly reared into three outdoor tanks (water temperature range:0–10°C). After overwintering, body weight, viscera index, hepatopancreas index, and intraperitoneal fat index were significantly lower than before (p < 0.05). In liver, the contents of monounsaturated fatty acid and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) were observed to be the lowest and the highest after 150 days of overwintering, respectively (p < 0.05). In serum, the concentrations of triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol significantly decreased while the activities of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase significantly increased at Day 75 (p < 0.05). Hepatic antioxidant activities were significantly lower whereas malondialdehyde content was significantly higher at Day 150 (p < 0.05). Serum antioxidant indexes were similar to those in liver. During overwintering, the decrease of TG contents in tissues was influenced by the upregulation of lipidolysis genes. These results indicate that lipids were continuously mobilized as physiological fuels throughout overwintering. Structured lipids (SLs) offer a promising avenue for designing novel formulations enriched in n-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) with potential health benefits. Triacylglycerols (TAGs), the most common fats in the human diet, are both non-toxic and chemically stable. The metabolic efficiency and digestibility of TAGs are significantly influenced by the position of fatty acids (FAs) within the glycerol backbone, with FAs at the sn-2 position being readily absorbed. Over the past two decades, advancements in SL research have led to the development of modified TAGs, achieved either through chemical or enzymatic processes, resulting in SLs. The ideal structure of SLs involves medium-chain FAs at the sn-1,3 positions and long-chain n-3 LCPUFAs at the sn-2 position of the glycerol backbone, conferring specific physicochemical and nutritional attributes. These tailored SL formulations find wide-ranging applications in the food and nutraceutical industries, showing promise for dietary support in promoting health and mitigating various diseases. In particular, SLs can be harnessed as functional oils to augment TAG metabolism, thereby impeding the development of fatty liver, countering the onset of obesity, and preventing atherosclerosis and age-related chronic diseases. In scrutinising prevailing research trajectories, this review endeavours to provide an in-depth analysis of the multifaceted advantages and repercussions associated with the synthesis of SLs. It elucidates their burgeoning potential in enhancing health and well-being across a range of demographic cohorts. Abstract Background The role of fatty acids in coronary heart disease (CHD) remains uncertain. There is little evidence from large-scale epidemiological studies on the relevance of circulating fatty acids levels to CHD risk. This study aims to examine the independent associations of the major circulating types of fatty acids with CHD risk. Methods UK Biobank is a prospective study of adults aged 40–69 in 2006–2010; in 2012–2013, a subset of the participants were resurveyed. Analyses were restricted to 89,242 participants with baseline plasma fatty acids (measured using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy) and without prior CHD. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for the associations with incidence CHD, defined as the first-ever myocardial infarction, unstable angina pectoris, coronary-related death, or relevant procedure. And the major types of fatty acids were mutually adjusted to examine the independent associations. Hazard ratios were corrected for regression dilution using the correlation of baseline and resurvey fatty acids measures. Results During a median follow-up of 11.8 years, 3,815 incident cases of CHD occurred. Independently of other fatty acids, CHD risk was positively associated with saturated fatty acids (SFA) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA), inversely associated with omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), but there was no strong evidence of an association with omega-6 PUFA: HR per standard deviation higher were 1.14 (95% CI, 1.09–1.20), 1.15 (1.10–1.21), 0.91 (0.87–0.94), and 1.04 (0.99–1.09) respectively. Independently of triglycerides and cholesterol, the inverse association with omega-3 PUFA was not materially changed, but the positive associations with SFA and MUFA attenuated to null after adjusting for triglycerides levels. Conclusions This large-scale study has quantitated the independent associations of circulating fatty acids with CHD risk. Omega-3 PUFA was inversely related to CHD risk, independently of other fatty acids and major lipid fractions. By contrast, independently of other fatty acids, the positive associations of circulating SFA and MUFA with CHD risk were mostly attributed to their relationship with triglycerides.

This review article investigates the utilization of MRS in the setting of cervical cancer. A variety of different techniques have been used in this space including single-voxel techniques such as point-resolved spectroscopy (PRESS) and stimulated echo acquisition mode spectroscopy (STEAM). Furthermore, the experimental parameters for these acquisitions including field strength, repetition times (TR), and echo times (TE) vary greatly. This study critically examines eleven MRS studies that focus on cervical cancer. Out of the eleven studies, ten studies utilized PRESS acquisition, while the remaining study used STEAM acquisition. These studies generally showed that the choline signal is altered in cervical cancer (4/11 studies), the lipid signal is generally increased in cervical cancer or the lipid distribution is changed (5/11 studies), and that diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) can quantitatively detect lower apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values in cervical cancer (2/11 studies). Two studies also investigated the role of MRS for monitoring treatment response and demonstrated mixed results regarding choline signal, and one of these studies showed increased lipid signal for non-responders. There are several new MRS technologies that have yet to be implemented for cervical cancer including advanced spectroscopic imaging and artificial intelligence, and those technologies are also discussed in the article.

This study conducted a comparative analysis of fatty acids (FAs) concentration derived from polar (PL) and non-polar (NPL) lipids in the liver and muscle tissues of rats and mice. The objective was to elucidate species-specific differences in tissue FA distribution. Employing targeted GC/MS-based methodology, the study aimed to provide insights into conserved and species-specific aspects of lipid metabolism, thereby enhancing future experimental design, linked with comprehension of the interactions between diet, metabolism, and health. Results revealed markedly higher levels of total fatty acids (TFAs) derived from PL in mice skeletal muscle compared to rats and elevated saturated fatty acids (SFAs) levels in mice. Unsaturated fatty acid levels, mainly monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), were substantially higher in mice muscle across all lipid classes, resulting in a higher PUFA/TFA ratio in mice muscle. Detailed analysis of specific unsaturated fatty acids (C16:1, C18:1n9c, C18:2n6c, C22:6n3) indicated elevated levels in mice relative to rats. Conversely, rats exhibited higher SFA levels derived from the NPL fraction in the liver, particularly in myristic (C14:0), stearic (C18:0), and tricosanoic (C23:0) acids. Mice liver PL fractions displayed significantly elevated unsaturated FA levels, with notably higher MUFAs and lower PUFAs in NPL fractions compared to rats. Analysis of specific unsaturated FAs revealed higher levels of palmitoleic acid (C16:1) in mice, while rats exhibited increased linoleic (C18:2n6c) and linolenic (C18:3n3) acids. In conclusion, significant differences in FAs tissue distribution between rats and mice underscore the importance of considering species-specific FAs variations when utilizing these animal models and interpreting experimental results related to FA metabolism.

Fatty acids play a crucial role in obesity development and in the comorbidities of obesity in both adults and children. This study aimed to assess the impact of circulating fatty acids on biomarkers of metabolic health of adolescents living with obesity. Parameters such as blood lipids, redox status, and leukocyte telomere length (rLTL) were measured alongside the proportions of individual fatty acids. The Mann–Whitney U test revealed that individuals with obesity exhibited an unfavorable lipid and redox status compared to the control normal weight group. The group with obesity also had lower plasma n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and a higher ratio of n-6 to n-3 PUFAs than the control group. They also had a shorter rLTL, indicating accelerated biological aging. There was an inverse association of rLTL and plasma n-6-to-n-3 PUFA ratio. Future studies should explore the impact of recommended nutrition plans and increased physical activity on these parameters to determine if these interventions can enhance the health and well-being of adolescents with obesity, knowing that early obesity can track into adulthood.

Abstract Background Breast cancer is associated with alterations in lipid metabolism. The treatment of breast cancer can also affect serum lipid composition. The purpose of this study was the examination of serum fatty acids (FAs) profiles in breast cancer survivors to assess if the FA levels normalize. Methods Serum levels of FAs were determined by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry in a group of breast cancer patients at baseline (before treatment, n = 28), at two follow-up visits at 12 months (n = 27) and 24 months (n = 19) after the breast cancer resection, and in the group of healthy controls (n = 25). Multivariate analysis was performed to assess how FA serum profile changes following treatment. Results Breast cancer patients’ serum FA profiles at follow-ups did not normalize to the levels of control group. The greatest differences were found for levels of branched-chain (BCFA), odd-chain (OCFA) and polyunsaturated (PUFAs) FAs, all of which were significantly increased 12 months after the surgery. Conclusions After treatment for breast cancer, the patients’ serum FA profile differs from the profile before treatment and from controls, especially 12 months after treatment. Some changes may be beneficial – increased BCFA and OCFA levels, and improved n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio. This may reflect lifestyle changes in breast cancer survivors and have an impact on the risk of recurrence.

Lipids have been found to modulate tumor biology, including proliferation, survival, and metastasis. With the new understanding of tumor immune escape that has developed in recent years, the influence of lipids on the cancer–immunity cycle has also been gradually discovered. First, regarding antigen presentation, cholesterol prevents tumor antigens from being identified by antigen presenting cells. Fatty acids reduce the expression of major histocompatibility complex class I and costimulatory factors in dendritic cells, impairing antigen presentation to T cells. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) reduce the accumulation of tumor-infiltrating dendritic cells. Regarding T-cell priming and activation, cholesterol destroys the structure of the T-cell receptor and reduces immunodetection. In contrast, cholesterol also promotes T-cell receptor clustering and relative signal transduction. PGE2 represses T-cell proliferation. Finally, regarding T-cell killing of cancer cells, PGE2 and cholesterol weaken granule-dependent cytotoxicity. Moreover, fatty acids, cholesterol, and PGE2 can improve the activity of immunosuppressive cells, increase the expression of immune checkpoints and promote the secretion of immunosuppressive cytokines. Given the regulatory role of lipids in the cancer–immunity cycle, drugs that modulate fatty acids, cholesterol and PGE2 have been envisioned as effective way in restoring antitumor immunity and synergizing with immunotherapy. These strategies have been studied in both preclinical and clinical studies.

In this study, the lipid profile, in vitro antioxidant and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory effect of lipid extracts from 15 species of seaweed were evaluated. The lipid content varied from 0.7 ± 0.1 to 3.9 ± 0.3 g/100g dry weight. Brown seaweeds showed high levels of neutral lipids, whereas red seaweeds contained more polar lipids. Most of the sterols were in free form than the esterified form. The levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) ranged from 8.1 ± 0.1% to 54.6 ± 6.9%, with α-linolenic acid (C18:3n-3) and eicosapentaenoic acid (C20:5n-3) being the primary ω-3 PUFAs, while arachidonic acid (C20:4n-6) was the main ω-6 PUFA. Lipid extracts from Polysiphonia platycarpa, Chondria cornuta and Sargassum boveanum showed the highest radical scavenging activity, whereas Padina gymnospora and Ulva lactuca had the highest iron chelating activity. Lipid extracts from B. pulmosa and P. gymnospora showed the highest protection against lipid oxidation and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibition. These macroalgal lipids can be used as a potential source of bioactive compounds for food and pharma.

Introduction: Novel preventive strategies in periodontal disease target the bacterial-induced inflammatory host response to reduce associated tissue destruction. Strategies focus on the modulation of tissue-destroying inflammatory host response, particularly the reduction of inflammation and promotion of resolution. Thereby, nutrition is a potent immunometabolic nonpharmacological intervention. Human studies have demonstrated the benefit of olive oil-containing Mediterranean-style diets (MDs), the main component of which being mono-unsaturated fatty acid (FA) oleic acid (OA (C18:1)). Hence, nutritional OA strengthened the microarchitecture of alveolar trabecular bone and increased circulating pro-resolving lipid mediators following bacterial inoculation with periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis, contrary to saturated FA palmitic acid (PA (C16:0)), which is abundant in Western-style diets. Additionally, the generalized distribution of inflammatory pathway mediators can occur in response to bacterial infection and compromise systemic tissue metabolism and bone homeostasis distant from the side of infection. Whether specific FA-enriched nutrition and periodontal inoculation are factors in systemic pathology that can be immune-modulatory targeted through dietary substitution is unknown and of clinical relevance. Methods: Normal-weight C57BL/6-mice received OA-or PA-enriched diets (PAED, OA-ED, PA/OA-ED) or a normal-standard diet (n=12/group) for 16 weeks and were orally infected with P. gingivalis/placebo to induce periodontal disease. Using histomorphometry and LC-MS/MS, systemic bone morphology, incorporated immunometabolic FA-species, serological markers of bone metabolism, and stress response were determined in addition to bone cell inflammation and interaction in vitro. Results: In contrast to OA-ED, PA-ED reduced systemic bone microarchitecture paralleled by increased lipotoxic PA-containing metabolite accumulation in bone. Substitution with OA reversed the bone-destructive impact of PA, which was accompanied by reduced diacylglycerols (DAG) and saturated ceramide levels. Further, PA-associated reduction in mineralization activity and concomitant pro-inflammatory activation of primary osteoblasts were diminished in cultures where PA was replaced with OA, which impacted cellular interaction with osteoclasts. Additionally, PA-ED increased osteoclast numbers in femurs in response to oral P. gingivalis infection, whereas OA-ED reduced osteoclast occurrence, which was paralleled by serologically increased levels of the stress-reducing lipokine PI(18:1/18:1). Conclusion: OA substitution reverses the bone-destructive and proinflammatory effects of PA and eliminates incorporated lipotoxic PA metabolites. This supports Mediterranean-style OA-based diets as a preventive intervention to target the accumulation of PA-associated lipotoxic metabolites and thereby supports systemic bone tissue resilience after oral bacterial P. gingivalis infection. The natural product pneumocandin B0 is the precursor of the antifungal drug caspofungin. To explore the relationship between pneumocandin B0 and oil. We found that the addition of 1 g/L of oil to the fermentation medium is more conducive to the production of pneumocandin B0. The metabolic reaction mechanism was explored using different fatty acids and the results showed that stearic acid and acetic acid increased the total production of pneumocandin B0 by 22.98% and 9.08%, respectively, as well as increasing the content of intracellular lipid droplets. We also analyzed gene expression and pathway differences between the two different fatty acids using transcriptome analyses. The addition of both acetic acid and stearic acid promoted an active pentose phosphate pathway, providing cells with higher intracellular reducing power. We found that the addition of fatty acids can lead to lipid accumulation, and lipid droplets can sequester lipophilic secondary metabolites such as pneumocandin B0 to reduce cell damage. These results provide novel insights into the relationship between pneumocandin B0 biosynthesis and fatty acids in G. lozoyensis. Context. Among the by-products derived from oilseeds, palm kernel cake (PKC) contains high concentrations of protein, fat, and fibre, which allows some flexibility in the use of this ingredient in ruminant diets. Aim. This study examined the effects of including palm kernel cake (PKC) in high-grain diets for cull cows on production performance, carcass traits, and meat fatty acid profile. Methods. Thirty-six ½ Girolando cows at 83 ± 5 months of age, with an average liveweight of 384.88 kg ± 59.18, were confined in collective stalls for 90 days. The animals were distributed into the following four diet groups: 0% (control), 8%, 16%, or 24% inclusion of PKC in the diet dry matter (DM). Key results. On the basis of regression analysis, the highest slaughter weight and carcass weight were at PKC inclusion levels of 11.5% and 10.3% respectively. Backfat thickness was greatest (8.8 mm, P < 0.01) in the carcasses of cows fed the diet with 15.1% PKC (on the basis of regression analysis), whereas the total lipid content in the meat decreased linearly (P < 0.05) with PKC inclusion. The C10:0, C12:0, C14:0, C14:1, C16:0, C16:1, C17:1, C18:0, C18:2n6t, and C20:5n3 fatty acids in the longissimus thoracis muscle responded quadratically (P < 0.05) to the inclusion of PKC. The highest concentration of desirable fatty acids was obtained with the inclusion of 11% PKC in the diet (on the basis of regression analysis). There was a linear increase in C14:1, C20:2, and C22:2 fatty acids and Δ9 desaturase 14 and 16 activity indices in the muscle of cows fed PKC. Conclusion. We recommend the inclusion of 10% PKC in the diet of cull cows fed high-grain diets. Intramuscular fatty-acid proportions were appreciably different from those reported for young B. taurus steers and heifers finished on high-concentrate diets. Implications. Therefore, inclusion of PKC is an excellent alternative to reduce production costs, having the availability and quality of the product as a limiting factor, since PKC is an industrial by-product. Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation induces oxidative stress in skin cells, generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) and perturbing enzyme-mediated metabolism. This disruption is evidenced with elevated concentrations of metabolites that play important roles in the modulation of redox homeostasis and inflammatory responses. Thus, this research sought to determine the impacts of the lipid extract derived from the Nannochloropsis oceanica microalgae on phospholipid metabolic processes in keratinocytes subjected to UVB exposure. UVB-irradiated keratinocytes were treated with the microalgae extract. Subsequently, analyses were performed on cell lysates to ascertain the levels of phospholipid/free fatty acids (GC-FID), lipid peroxidation byproducts (GC-MS), and endocannabinoids/eicosanoids (LC-MS), as well as to measure the enzymatic activities linked with phospholipid metabolism, receptor expression, and total antioxidant status (spectrophotometric methods). The extract from N. oceanica microalgae, by diminishing the activities of enzymes involved in the synthesis of endocannabinoids and eicosanoids (PLA2/COX1/2/LOX), augmented the concentrations of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), namely DHA and EPA. These concentrations are typically diminished due to UVB irradiation. As a consequence, there was a marked reduction in the levels of pro-inflammatory arachidonic acid (AA) and associated pro-inflammatory eicosanoids and endocannabinoids, as well as the expression of CB1/TRPV1 receptors. The microalgal extract also mitigated the increase in lipid peroxidation byproducts, specifically MDA in non-irradiated samples and 10-F4t-NeuroP in both control and post-UVB exposure. In polar regions, the microphytobenthos has important ecological functions in shallow-water habitats, such as on top of coastal sediments. This community is dominated by benthic diatoms, which contribute significantly to primary production and biogeochemical cycling while also being an important component of polar food webs. Polar diatoms are able to cope with markedly changing light conditions and prolonged periods of darkness during the polar night in Antarctica. However, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, five strains of Antarctic benthic diatoms were isolated in the field, and the resulting unialgal cultures were identified as four distinct species, of which one is described as a new species, Planothidium wetzelii sp. nov. All four species were thoroughly examined using physiological, cell biological, and biochemical methods over a fully controlled dark period of 3 months. The results showed that the utilization of storage lipids is one of the key mechanisms in Antarctic benthic diatoms to survive the polar night, although different fatty acids were involved in the investigated taxa. In all tested species, the storage lipid content declined significantly, along with an ultrastructurally observable degradation of the chloroplasts. Surprisingly, photosynthetic performance did not change significantly despite chloroplasts decreasing in thylakoid membranes and an increased number of plastoglobules. Context: Plasma fatty acid profiles provide evidence of short-term feeding, while red blood cells (RBC) indicate longer-term feeding effects. Information on the rate of change in fatty acid profiles of sheep blood over time after alterations in diet is lacking. This study monitored the short- and longer-term effects of feeding grain-based diets to lambs on changes to omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in blood fractions over 21 days. The data provide a guide to managing omega-3 PUFA availability for adequate tissue accretion of these fatty acids. Aims: To determine the rate of depletion over 21 days of omega-3 PUFA in the blood fractions of sheep fed on grain-based diets. Methods: Blood samples were taken from ewes taken off pasture and fed grain-based diets for 21 days. Fatty acid profiles in the blood plasma and RBC were used to monitor the rate of depletion of omega-3 PUFA. Key results: Immediate changes in plasma omega-3 PUFA concentrations occurred from the first day of grain feeding. The omega-3 PUFA content declined continuously on all five grains, but with substantial differences among them. RBC omega-3 PUFA contents displayed great variation across individual sheep but depletion was not significant. Conclusions: Plasma omega-3 PUFA depletion immediately on grain feeding indicated a lower availability for tissue accretion in growing sheep following short-term changes in diet. The lack of change in RBC omega-3 PUFA concentrations over 21 days indicated a differential accumulation of these fatty acids in this lipid depot compared with plasma, and changes in other tissues should also be examined. Implications: The effect of these short- and long-term changes on LC n -3PUFA accumulation in meat and reproductive tissues warrants further investigation. Omega-3 fatty acids can have important health implications and are associated with altered reproductive efficiency in sheep. Lipid signaling is involved in longevity regulation, but which specific lipid molecular species affect human biological aging remains largely unknown. We investigated the relation between complex lipids and DNA methylation‐based metrics of biological aging among 4181 participants (mean age 55.1 years (range 30.0–95.0)) from the Rhineland Study, an ongoing population‐based cohort study in Bonn, Germany. The absolute concentration of 14 lipid classes, covering 964 molecular species and 267 fatty acid composites, was measured by Metabolon Complex Lipid Panel. DNA methylation‐based metrics of biological aging (AgeAccelPheno and AgeAccelGrim) were calculated based on published algorithms. Epigenome‐wide association analyses (EWAS) of biological aging‐associated lipids and pathway analysis were performed to gain biological insights into the mechanisms underlying the effects of lipidomics on biological aging. We found that higher levels of molecular species belonging to neutral lipids, phosphatidylethanolamines, phosphatidylinositols, and dihydroceramides were associated with faster biological aging, whereas higher levels of lysophosphatidylcholine, hexosylceramide, and lactosylceramide species were associated with slower biological aging. Ceramide, phosphatidylcholine, and lysophosphatidylethanolamine species with odd‐numbered fatty acid tail lengths were associated with slower biological aging, whereas those with even‐numbered chain lengths were associated with faster biological aging. EWAS combined with functional pathway analysis revealed several complex lipids associated with biological aging as important regulators of known longevity and aging‐related pathways. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the dietary macronutrient distribution affects on serum lipid profiles in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D). Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 82 children and adolescents between the ages of 2 and 18 years with a diabetes age of ≥1 year. Dietary intake was evaluated by 3-day food diaries, including three consecutive days (two weekdays and one weekend day). Results: The mean age of the 82 patients with diabetes was 11.6±4.3 years (range: 2-18 years) (45.1% female), the median diabetes duration was 3.4 (2.9) years, the mean HbA1c level was 7.0±1.4%, and mean body mass index standard deviation score was 0.2±1.1. The median distribution of energy from carbohydrates, protein and fat in the total energy intake was 50.0% (6.2), 17.4% (2.7) and 32.5% (5.1), respectively. Dietary fiber intake was inadequate in 64 (77.9%) participants, while for 77 participants (93.9%), saturated fatty acid intake was above the recommended intake. For children and adolescents with T1D, mean serum cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein, and high-density lipoprotein levels were 162.9±33.4 mg/dL, 86.2±49 mg/dL, 87.9±29.2 mg/dL, and 60.7±17.9 mg/dL, respectively. Conclusion: To maintain healthy eating, consuming foods high in saturated fat should be limited, and children and adolescents with T1D should be supported by their family and healthcare professionals in the consumption of diets high in fiber. Mowing the plant shoots under hot, sunny, and dry conditions severely traumatizes the entire vegetative body, and the overall life cycle of the plant is altered. The purpose of the present research was to investigate the effects of mowing and drying on lipids, fatty acids (FA), sterols, and the systemic responses in leaves of plant material at three time points (24 h, 72 h, and leaves of new shoots after traumatic mowing in summer (1 July) and those subjected to cold hardening by autumn temperatures in September (aftergrass)) were analyzed for the first time. The leaves of five species of herbaceous plants growing in permafrost ecosystems were analyzed by HPTLC and GC-MS. It was established that fatty acids in the tissues of aftergrass leaves were characterized by higher values of the n-6/n-3 ratio than in summer grasses. It was demonstrated that exposure of leaves for 72 h in natural conditions in summer and at low temperatures in autumn in leaves of aftergrass resulted in significant changes in the composition of membrane phospholipids. The analytical performance of a compact infrared attenuated total reflection spectrometer using a pyroelectric detector array has been evaluated and compared to a conventional laboratory Fourier transform infrared system for applications in food analysis. Analytical characteristics including sensitivity, repeatability, linearity of the calibration functions, signal-to-noise ratio, and spectral resolution have been derived for both approaches. The study aimed to apply gamma radiation as a cell pretreatment method for lipid extraction and for obtaining astaxanthin from residual biomass of Haematococcus pluvialis. Factor 1 of the two-factor experimental design was represented by cell pretreatment methods: biomass with chloroform:methanol under ultrasound (BCMU), biomass with chloroform:methanol under γ radiation (BCMR), dry biomass under γ radiation (DBR), and control (without pretreatment). Factor 2 considered the vegetative and cystic phases. Cultivation was performed in a mixotrophic system, and biomass was collected in both phases, centrifuged, lyophilized, and submitted to cell pretreatment and lipid extraction. Lipid content and FAMEs were evaluated comparing pretreatment methods and life cycle phases. Total lipid content was higher with the BCMR method in the vegetative (18% DW) and cystic (14% DW) phases. Gamma radiation combined with organic solvent was more efficient for increasing lipid yield, and DBR had a lipid yield similar to BCMU. FAME content differed between phases and pretreatments for most fatty acids, mainly C16:0, C16:1, C18:1n9c, C18:2n6c, C18:2n6t, and C18:3n3. The predominance of saturated or low unsaturated fatty acids makes H. pluvialis, in both phases, suitable for biofuel production. The preservation of astaxanthin from residual cystic biomass was observed when submitted to the DBR method, with a concentration similar to the raw biomass (1.5% DW). Gamma radiation in dry biomass has an antioxidant effect. Therefore, the lipid extraction method preceded by gamma irradiation was efficient for vegetative and cystic cells of H. pluvialis and contributed to the preservation of astaxanthin from residual cystic biomass. The effect of sugarcane molasses on lipid content and fatty acids methyl ester (FAME) profile by Chromochloris zofingiensis is investigated in this work. For this purpose, the strain has been cultivated under mixotrophic conditions in a medium amended with specific concentrations of molasses (0.5 g/L, 1 g/L, and 2 g/L) able to sustain microalgae growth. Better biomass concentration, lipid content, and lipid productivity (1.6 g/L, 38% wt, and 286 mg/L/day) than the control (1.32 g/L, 16% wt, and 139 mg/L/day) were obtained with 2 g/L of molasses. The highest value of the total lipid content (42% wt) was reached with 1 g/L of molasses. FAME profile revealed a 97% composition in C16-C18 with no statistically meaningful differences among the three concentrations of molasses tested. The most represented fatty acids were C18:1 oleic (> 38% wt), C18:2 linoleic (> 21% wt), and C16:0 palmitic (> 14% wt). When using 2 g/L of molasses unsaturated fatty acids reached the highest portion (77%) than the control (61%). Specifically, all FAMEs have been quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed in order to improve biodiesel properties. The main characteristics of biodiesel obtainable from the algal lipids appeared in compliance with ASTM standards for unblended biodiesel and fulfilled European regulations (EN 14,214 and EN 590) for the quality of biodiesel. Owing the compliance of the corresponding biodiesel characteristics with international standards, a profitable biodiesel can be obtained under mixotrophic conditions triggered by the use of a food industry waste. Background: Bees provide essential pollination services for many food crops and are critical in supporting wild plant diversity. However, the dietary landscape of pollen food sources for social and solitary bees has changed because of agricultural intensification and habitat loss. For this reason, understanding the basic nutrient metabolism and meeting the nutritional needs of bees is becoming an urgent requirement for agriculture and conservation. We know that pollen is the principal source of dietary fat and sterols for pollinators, but a precise understanding of what the essential nutrients are and how much is needed is not yet clear. Sterols are key for producing the hormones that control development and may be present in cell membranes, where fatty-acid-containing species are important structural and signalling molecules (phospholipids) or to supply, store and distribute energy (glycerides). Aim of the review: In this critical review, we examine the current general understanding of sterol and lipid metabolism of social and solitary bees from a variety of literature sources and discuss implications for bee health. Key scientific concepts of review: We found that while eusocial bees are resilient to some dietary variation in sterol supply the scope for this is limited. The evidence of both de novo lipogenesis and a dietary need for particular fatty acids (FAs) shows that FA metabolism in insects is analogous to mammals but with distinct features. Introduction: Peroxisomes are essential organelles in lipid metabolism. They contain enzymes for β-oxidation of very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFA) that cannot be broken down in mitochondria. Reduced expression in hepatic acyl-CoA oxidase 1 (ACOX1), a peroxisome β-oxidation enzyme, followed by modification of the brain fatty acid profile has been observed in aged rodents. These studies have suggested a potential role for peroxisome β-oxidation in brain aging. This study was designed to examine the effect of hepatic ACOX1 inhibition on brain fatty acid composition and neuronal cell activities of young rats (200-250 g). Methods: A specific ACOX1 inhibitor, 10, 12- tricosadiynoic acid (TDYA), 100 μg/kg (in olive oil) was administered by daily gavage for 25 days in male Wistar rats. The brain fatty acid composition and electrophysiological properties of dentate gyrus granule cells were determined using gas chromatography and whole-cell patch-clamp, respectively. Results: A significant increase in C20, C22, C18:1, C20:1, and a decrease of C18, C24, C20:3n6, and C22:6n3 were found in 10, 12- tricosadiynoic acid (TDYA) treated rats compared to the control group. The results showed that ACOX1 inhibition changes fatty acid composition similar to old rats. ACOX1 inhibition caused hyperpolarization of resting membrane potential, and also reduction of input resistance, action potential duration, and spike firing. Moreover, ACOX1 inhibition increased rheobase current and afterhyperpolarization amplitude in granule cells. Conclusion: The results indicated that systemic inhibition of ACOX1 causes hypo-excitability of neuronal cells. These results provide new evidence on the involvement of peroxisome function and hepatic ACOX1 activity in brain fatty acid profile and the electrophysiological properties of dentate gyrus cells. Pavlova sp. is not only one of the most popular microalgae in aquaculture, but also a source of high-quality biodiesel feedstock. With white light as a control (W), Pavlova sp. was cultured in this study under varying light quality, including monochromatic red light (R), blue light (B), and combinations thereof with different proportions (illuminators of mRnB, comprised of m red light units and n blue ones, m+n=7), to examine the effects of illuminating light quality on biocomponent production and biodiesel quality. The results show that combined monochromatic light, especially 2R5B, 3R4B, 4R3B, and 5R2B, could improve the growth of Pavlova sp. The dry weight of harvested algae powder in the 5R2B group reached 418.03 mg/L, and was 22.65% higher than that in the control group (W). Lipid production under combined monochromatic light of 4R3B reached 107.86 mg/L, and was 25.61% higher than in the control (W). In addition, illumination using 4R3B increased the proportion of C16:0 (palmitic acid) and C16: 1 (palmitoleic acid) fatty acids in Pavlova sp. by 15.55% and 21.94%, respectively, which translates into improved biodiesel quality. All cetane numbers (CN) for 4R3B–6R1B were over 51, while iodine values (IV) and degrees of unsaturation (DU) were reduced, leading to more stable biodiesel suitable for long-term storage. In addition, protein production under 6R1B was as high as 31.56 mg/L, 1.8 times greater than under W. Light quality is proposed as an effective tool to regulate biocomponent production by microalgae. Herein, we synthesized a lipid-mimicking organic material (PCD_FA) that can surpass the efficacy of lipid-based nanoparticles and demonstrated its potential as a delivery vehicle for various hydrophilic drugs. PCD_FA is a conjugate of pH-sensitive carbon dots (PCDs) and fatty acids (FAs) and has potential applications in several fields owing to various combinations of carbon dots (CDs) and FAs. Similar to phospholipids, PCD-FAs have hydrophilic heads and hydrophobic tails that allow them to self-form nanoparticles (Coposomes) in the aqueous phase. Coposomes can easily combine various hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail combinations, and several drugs can be encapsulated, or drug release patterns can be controlled according to each property. We analyzed the differences in size, drug loading efficiency, and drug release patterns of Coposomes depending on the type of FAs and characteristics of the encapsulated drugs. Additionally, cell entry and intracellular drug release mechanisms of the Coposomes were identified. The applicability of Coposomes as drug delivery carriers for tumor treatment has been demonstrated in comparison with that of liposomes formulation in tumor-bearing mouse models. Fasting plasma fatty acid (FA) concentrations were measured at baseline and 3 mo in children (n = 84) with cystic fibrosis and pancreatic insufficiency. Plasma palmitic acid was selected because of its dietary prevalence and was a minor component of the LPC product. Palmitic acid increased 15% in the LPC product-treated total subjects (P = 0.01) and 23% in the subgroup with more severe malabsorption (P = 0.007), with no change in either group on placebo. Total FAs increased 11% (P = 0.009) and 20% (P = 0.005), respectively. Increased palmitic acid and total FA suggest that LPC provided by the product created an intraluminal environment that increased coingested dietary fat absorption and provided more calories. Microbial lipids are considered promising and environmentally friendly substitutes for fossil fuels and plant-derived oils. They alleviate the depletion of limited petroleum storage and the decrement of arable lands resulting from the greenhouse effect. Microbial lipids derived from oleaginous yeasts provide fatty acid profiles similar to plant-derived oils, which are considered as sustainable and alternative feedstocks for use in the biofuel, cosmetics, and food industries. Rhodotorula toruloides is an intriguing oleaginous yeast strain that can accumulate more than 70% of its dry biomass as lipid content. It can utilize a wide range of substrates, including low-cost sugars and industrial waste. It is also robust against various industrial inhibitors. However, precise control of the fatty acid profile of the lipids produced by R. toruloides is essential for broadening its biotechnological applications. This mini-review describes recent progress in identifying fatty synthesis pathways and consolidated strategies used for specific fatty acid-rich lipid production via metabolic engineering, strain domestication. In addition, this mini-review summarized the effects of culture conditions on fatty acid profiles in R. toruloides. A high-fat diet is another source of palmitic acid that is taken up by adipose tissue, liver, heart and skeletal muscle via lipolytic mechanisms. Moreover, overweight/obesity and accompanying insulin resistance increase non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) production. Palmitic acid may affect cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk via mechanisms beyond increasing low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), notably synthesis of ceramides and possibly through branched fatty acid esters of hydroxy fatty acids (FAHFAs) from palmitic acid. Ceramides are positively associated with incident CVD, whereas the role of FAHFAs is uncertain. Given the new evidence about dietary regulation of palmitic acid metabolism there is interest in learning more about how diet modulates circulating palmitic acid concentrations and, hence, potentially CVD risk. This is important because of the heightened interest in low carbohydrate (carbohydrate controlled) and high carbohydrate (low-fat) diets coupled with the ongoing overweight/obesity epidemic, all of which can increase plasma palmitic acid levels by different mechanisms. Consequently, learning more about palmitic acid biochemistry, trafficking and how its metabolites affect CVD risk will inform future dietary guidance to further lower the burden of CVD. Sprouted grains are gaining popularity as functional food ingredients. This study aimed to evaluate the lipid and fatty acid composition of eight sprouted grains (millet, amaranth, quinoa, wheat, rye, barley, buckwheat, and oat). The method used was germination for up to 72 h at temperatures ranging from 19–23 °C. In general, the lipid content increased in the various grains sprouted, providing a rich source of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The % oil yield ranged from 1.17 ± 0.02% in sprouted rye to 5.71 ± 0.26% in sprouted amaranth. Germinated oat showed the greatest increase in fat content, 54.3%, compared to the control. Polyunsaturated fatty acids were more prevalent in whole grains (46.9–75.6%) than saturated fatty acids (10.1–25.9%) and increased with sprouting. The primary fatty acids detected in the grains, in order of abundance, were linoleic, oleic, palmitic, linolenic, and stearic acids. Millet sprouts contained the lowest total saturated fatty acids and the highest polyunsaturated fatty acids. Amaranth had the highest amount of saturated fatty acids, while buckwheat contained the lowest quantity of polyunsaturated fatty acids. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of the oxyhumolite supplementation in the feed of cows on the profile and the nutritional indices of fatty acids (FA) in milk and cheese. To the diet of 30 cows, a 100 g/per cow/per day humic-mineral supplement with 65% humic acids was included. Milk was sampled three times: control (0 day, before the dietary modification) and on days 30 and 60 after the introduction of the supplement. For chemical analyses, samples from each cow and for cheese manufacture samples of bulk milk were taken. Fat content in the milk and the cheese, and partial sums of fatty acids profile, nutritional fatty acid ratios and indices were determined. The indicated changes in milk fat quality are difficult to unequivocally assess from a dietary point of view. Negative changes were found in the increase in the proportion of hypercholesterolemic acids (HSFA), atherogenic (AI) and thrombogenic (TI) indices, and a decrease in the hypocholesterolemic/hypercholesterolemic (h/H) ratio, the proportion of desired (DFA) and monounsaturated (MUFA) FA over time of supplementation. Positive changes were also found: the increase in polyunsaturated (PUFA), branched-chain (BCFA), short- and medium-chain (SCSFA) and long-chain (LCSFA) FA percentages, and also content was reported. The cheese (30 and 60 d) showed an increase in the content (mg/100 g) of SFA (including SCFA and LCSFA), OCFA (odd-chain FA), BCFA, MUFA, and DFA. Adverse changes were observed with an increase in PUFA n6, the n6/n3 ratio, and HSFA and TI. No significant differences were found for the AI index. Zinc (Zn) is a vital micronutrient for all living organisms, but in high concentrations, it is a major anthropogenic pollutant. In this study, it was investigated the effect of zinc excess concentrations (50, 100, and 150 mg kg−1) in the substrate on some physiological parameters and the dynamics of fatty acid (FA) content in yellow mustard (Sinapis alba L. cv. Belgia) and oriental mustard (Brassica juncea L. (Czern) cv. Slavanka). The Zn concentration of 50 mg kg−1 did not affect the physiological parameters of yellow mustard, whereas some physiological parameters slightly decreased in oriental mustard. Moreover, this concentration stimulated an increase in total and unsaturated FAs content in leaves of both species, along with high Zn accumulation by both species. The Zn concentrations of 100 and 150 mg kg−1 in substrate had a negative effect on the state of plants as measured by the studied physiological parameters and caused different changes in FAs content in yellow and oriental mustard. Particularly, the total amount of FA increased in comparison to the control, but this increase was due to an elevation in saturated FA (SFA) content. At the same time, the total FA content in oriental mustard slightly decreased while the proportion of unsaturated FAs to SFA kept rising. According to the present data and analysis of the available literature, two strategies of adaptation to heavy metals were suggested through the changes in FAs: height-resistant horticultural plant species on the one side and sensitive species on the other. The seed oil of Carapa guianensis, known as crabwood oil (CWO), is distinguished for its medicinal and cosmetics applications, attributed to its bioactive components and lipid profile. CWO and its dry and solvent fractionation were studied, with a focus on physicochemical functionality and the partitioning of known bioactive compounds, such as limonoids and sterols. Important bioactive components, including limonoids and sterols, were partitioned depending on the fractionation method; in particular, there is a direct dependence on solvent polarity. There was a very strong solid fraction yield–solvent polarity with a high linear slope of −121.3%. The partitioning of the lipids is significant enough to drive measurable and predictable changes in the physical properties. Palmitic (P: C16:0) and oleic (O: C18:1) fatty acids account for about 60% of the total fatty acid composition of the TAGs of CWO and its fractions. The most abundant limonoid is methyl angolensate (from 28 to 39%), followed by Trichilin A (from 13% to 22%). Gedunin and Andirobin were more abundant in the liquid fractions, whereas Carapanolides (less than 1.3%) were more present in the olein fractions. The crystallization and melting temperatures of the solid fractions were up to 26 °C, compared to 11°C for CWO, and were particularly strongly correlated to the polarity of the solvents. The SFC profile indicated semi-solid fats, with the solid fractions showing up to 19% at 18 °C, twice the SFC in CWO. The fractions demonstrated a wide range of distinguishable microstructures. The shapes include well-organized spherulites and needle-like and rod-like crystals with sizes varying from 5 to 250 µ, suggesting that they are likely to have different flow characteristics and feel to the skin and mouth. There is a potential to make unique compositions with significantly different properties, with antimicrobial and antifungal efficacy due to the bioactive components of CWO through fractionation, using polarity as a predictive tool. Cutibacterium acnes is one of the most abundant bacteria on the skin. Being exposed to oxygen and oxic stress, the secretion of the bacterial antioxidant protein RoxP ensures an endogenous antioxidant system for the preservation of skin health. To investigate the impact of the antioxidant RoxP on oxidation of the bacteria, wildtype and an isogenic roxp mutant were cultured in anaerobic and oxic conditions. The carbonylated status of proteins were recorded, as were the most significant modifications in a relative intensity of free fatty acids (FFA) and lipids containing fatty acids (FA), such as di- (DG) and triglycerides (TG), di- (DGDG) and sulfoquinozyldiacylglycerol (SQDG) and ceramides. Concerning the fatty acid types, it was observed that the free fatty acids contained mainly C12:0–C26:0 in hydroxy and acylated forms, the DG contained mainly C29:0–C37:0, the TG contained mainly C19:0–C33:0, and the DGDG/SQDGs contained very long fatty acids (C29:0–C37:0) demonstrating the interdependence of de novo synthesis of lipids and RoxP. The area of DGDG peaks (924.52, 929.56 and 930.58) were affected by bacterial growth conditions, with the exception of m/z 910.61. Moreover, the FFA unsaturation is wider in the SQDG species (C30:0 to C36:6) than in DG, TG or free FFA species. Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a psychiatric mood disorder that results in substantial functional impairment and is characterized by symptoms such as depressed mood, diminished interest, impaired cognitive function, and vegetative symptoms such as disturbed sleep. Although the exact etiology of MDD is unclear, several underlying mechanisms (disturbances in immune response and/ or stress response) have been associated with its development, with no single mechanism able to account for all aspects of the disorder. Currently, about 1 in 3 patients are resistant to current antidepressant therapies. Providing an alternative perspective on MDD could therefore pave the way for new, unexplored diagnostic and therapeutic solutions. The central nervous system harbors an enormous pool of lipids and lipid intermediates that have been linked to a plethora of its physiological functions. The aim of this review is therefore to provide an overview of the implications of lipids in MDD and highlight certain MDD-related underlying mechanisms that involve lipids and/or their intermediates. The consumption of diets high in saturated fatty acids and/or refined carbohydrates are associated with neuroinflammation, cognitive dysfunction, and neurodegenerative disease. In contrast, diets high in polyunsaturated fatty acids are associated with anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects. We have previously shown that high fat diet (HFD) consumption increases saturated fatty acids and decreases polyunsaturated fatty acids in the hippocampus. We have further shown that HFD elicits exaggerated neuroinflammation and reduced synaptic elements, and results in robust memory deficits in aged rats. Here, we examined the impact of palmitate, an abundant dietary saturated fat, on a variety of cellular responses in BV2 microglia and HippoE-14 neurons, and the extent to which the omega-3 fatty acid, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), would buffer against these responses. Our data demonstrate that DHA pretreatment prevents or partially attenuates palmitate-induced alterations in proinflammatory, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and mitochondrial damage-associated gene expression in both cell types. Furthermore, we show that synaptoneurosomes isolated from aged, HFD-fed mice are engulfed by BV2 microglia at a faster rate than synaptoneurosomes isolated from aged, chow-fed mice, suggesting HFD alters signaling at synapses to hasten their engulfment by microglia. Consistent with this notion, we found modest increases in complement proteins and a decrease in CD47 protein expression on synaptoneurosomes isolated from the hippocampus of aged, HFD-fed mice. Interestingly, palmitate reduced BV2 microglial phagocytosis, but only of synaptoneurosomes isolated from chow-fed mice, an effect that was prevented by DHA pretreatment. Lastly, we measured the impact of palmitate and DHA on mitochondrial function in both microglial and neuronal cell models using the Seahorse XFe96 Analyzer. These data indicate that DHA pretreatment does not mitigate palmitate-induced reductions in mitochondrial respiration in BV2 microglia and HippoE-14 neurons, suggesting DHA may be acting downstream of mitochondrial function to exert its protective effects. Phenolic compounds have become a severe environmental concern due to water contamination, affecting the sustainability of the ecosystem. The microalgae enzymes have enticed for the efficient involvement in the biodegradation of phenolics compound in metabolic processes. In this investigation, the oleaginous microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana was cultured heterotrophically under the influence of phenol and p-nitrophenol. The enzymatic assays of algal cell extracts were used to decipher the underlying mechanisms for phenol and p-nitrophenol biodegradation. A reduction of 99.58% and 97.21% in phenol and p-nitrophenol values, respectively, was recorded after the 10th day of microalgae cultivation. Also, the biochemical components in phenol, p-nitrophenol, and control were found to be 39.6 ± 2.3%, 36.7 ± 1.3%, and 30.9 ± 1.8% (total lipids); 27.4 ± 1.4%, 28.3 ± 1.8%, and 19.7 ± 1.5% (total carbohydrates); and 26.7 ± 1.9%, 28.3 ± 1.9%, and 39.9 ± 1.2% (total proteins), respectively. The GC–MS and 1H-NMR spectroscopy attested the incidence of fatty acid methyl esters in the synthesized microalgal biodiesel. The activity of catechol 2,3-dioxygenase and hydroquinone 1,2-dioxygenase in microalgae under heterotrophic conditions has conferred the ortho- and hydroquinone pathways for phenol and p-nitrophenol biodegradation, respectively. Also, the acceleration of fatty acid profiles in microalgae is deliberated under the impact of the phenol and p-nitrophenol biodegradation process. Thus, microalgae enzymes in the metabolic degradation process of phenolic compounds encourage ecosystem sustainability and biodiesel prospects due to the increased lipid profiles of microalgae. Patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) show significantly faster progress in the stages of fibrosis compared to those with non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) disease. The non-invasive diagnosis of NASH remains an unmet clinical need. Preliminary data have shown that sphingolipids, especially ceramides, fatty acids, and other lipid classes may be related to the presence of NASH and the histological activity of the disease. The aim of our study was to assess the association of certain plasma lipid classes, such as fatty acids, acylcarnitines, and ceramides, with the histopathological findings in patients with NASH. The study included three groups: patients with NASH (N = 12), NAFL (N = 10), and healthy [non non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)] controls (N = 15). Plasma samples were collected after 12 h of fasting, and targeted analyses for fatty acids, acylcarnitines, and ceramides were performed. Baseline clinical and demographic characteristics were collected. There was no significant difference in baseline characteristics across the three groups or between NAFL and NASH patients. Patients with NASH had increased levels of several fatty acids, including, among others, fatty acid (FA) 14:0, FA 15:0, FA 18:0, FA 18:3n3, as well as Cer(d18:1/16:0), compared to NAFL patients and healthy controls. No significant difference was found between NAFL patients and healthy controls. In conclusion, patients with NASH exhibited a distinctive plasma lipid profile that can differentiate them from NAFL patients and non-NAFLD populations. The nutritional components of cantaloupe, including vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and dietary fiber, contribute to overall health, improved immunity, hydration, and protection against chronic diseases. This study was conducted to investigate the influence of different concentrations (0 (control), 100, 150, and 200 ppm) of 1-naphthalene acetic acid (1-NAA) on the nutritional components of the cantaloupe (Cucumis melo L. Var. Super White Honey). All the studied treatments were applied twice at the 2nd and 4th leaf stages. The applied concentrations of 1-NAA significantly improved the sex expression and fruit yield attributes. Different nutritional components like proximate contents, minerals, vitamins, selected fatty acids, and amino acids were analyzed. The results showed that the maximum moisture content, proteins, carbohydrates, ash, and energy were recorded with 100 ppm. The higher lipids were recorded during the supplementation of 150 ppm. Significantly greater fibers were recorded using 200 ppm. Regarding minerals, 100 ppm was found to be the best as it increased calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), sodium (Na), phosphorous (P), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and zinc (Zn). Vitamins were also found to be the maximum with 100 ppm, including vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, and vitamin K. The development of biofuel production is of high concern since energy and fuels have so far been fulfilled by fossil resources. Microalgae, as green biomass, has the potential to produce biofuel. Nevertheless, many studies still face low lipid yield due to insufficient nutrients in the medium, improper culture techniques, or inaccurate solvent composition used in the lipid extraction process. Therefore, this study aimed to enhance lipid production from the cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris. The cultivation was performed in mediums supplemented with low concentrations of low-cost exogenous N-sources, which are still rare to examine. The concentrations were varied at 10, 20 and 30 mg L−1 of urea and 35, 70 and 105 mg L−1 of KNO3. For both urea and KNO3, a faster growth rate (0.215 vs. 0.211 d−1) was found under the highest N-concentration in the medium. In contrast, lipid yield increased in the medium with the lowest N-concentration, with values of up to 50.27–51.63%. The produced lipids also contain palmitic, oleic and linoleic acids, and their spectra comply with the fatty acids composition in the biodiesel standard. Skeletal muscle (SkM) lipid composition plays an essential role in physiological muscle maintenance and exercise performance. Thyroid hormones (THs) regulate muscle formation and fuel energy utilization by modulating carbohydrates and lipid and protein metabolism. The best-known effects of THs in SkM include the promotion of mitochondrial biogenesis, the fiber-type switch from oxidative to glycolytic fibers, and enhanced angiogenesis. To assess the role of THs on the lipidic composition of SkM fibers, we performed lipidomic analyses of SkM cells and tissues, glucose tolerance experiments, and exercise performance tests. Our data demonstrated that TH treatment induces remodeling of the lipid profile and changes the proportion of fatty acids in SkM. In brief, THs significantly reduced the ratio of stearic/oleic acid in the muscle similar to what is induced by physical activity. The increased proportion of unsaturated fatty acids was linked to an improvement in insulin sensitivity and endurance exercise. These findings point to THs as critical endocrine factors affecting exercise performance and indicate that homeostatic maintenance of TH signals, by improving cell permeability and receptor stability at the cell membrane, is crucial for muscle physiology. Emerging evidence suggests that fatty acids (FAs) and their lipid mediator derivatives can induce both beneficial and detrimental effects on inflammatory processes and joint degradation in osteoarthritis (OA) and autoimmune-driven rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The present study characterized the detailed FA signatures of synovial membranes collected during knee replacement surgery of age- and gender-matched OA and RA patients (n = 8/diagnosis). The FA composition of total lipids was determined by gas chromatography and analyzed with univariate and multivariate methods supplemented with hierarchical clustering (HC), random forest (RF)-based classification of FA signatures, and FA metabolism pathway analysis. RA synovium lipids were characterized by reduced proportions of shorter-chain saturated FAs (SFAs) and elevated percentages of longer-chain SFAs and monounsaturated FAs, alkenyl chains, and C20 n-6 polyunsaturated FAs compared to OA synovium lipids. In HC, FAs and FA-derived variables clustered into distinct groups, which preserved the discriminatory power of the individual variables in predicting the RA and OA inflammatory states. In RF classification, SFAs and 20:3n-6 were among the most important FAs distinguishing RA and OA. Pathway analysis suggested that elongation reactions of particular long-chain FAs would have increased relevance in RA. The present study was able to determine the individual FAs, FA groups, and pathways that distinguished the more inflammatory RA from OA. The findings suggest modifications of FA elongation and metabolism of 20:4n-6, glycerophospholipids, sphingolipids, and plasmalogens in the chronically inflamed RA synovium.
