This study examines the role of topography as a dynamic boundary condition that limits the efficiency of fluvial erosion in the post-glacial Teton Range landscape. The volume of sediment currently stored in two major catchments was estimated using high-resolution LiDAR and geometric reconstructions of depth to bedrock. Seismic reflection data in Moran Bay reveals post-glacial sediment preserved behind a submerged moraine, which isolates the bay from the larger Jackson Lake depocenter. The volume of post-glacial sediment stored in the canyons and bay totals 173.82 ± 19.5336.0 (×10−3 km3), which translates to a catchment-wide sediment production rate of 0.17 ± 0.02 mm/yr. The rock-equivalent sediment volume in Moran Bay is 4.4 ± 0.9 (×10−3 km3), only ∼2.6% of the total post-glacial volume. While the estimated sediment production rate in the canyons is similar to the uplift rate, the denudation rate derived from Moran Bay sediment is 0.004 ± 0.001 mm/yr, implying highly inefficient post-glacial sediment transport. The fluvial system has been disequilibrated by glacial erosion such that interglacial valley profiles lack the steepness needed to transport sediment, delaying sediment evacuation until the next glacial advance, or until uplift sufficiently steepens the fluvial system so that it regains efficiency. Furthermore, colluvial production rates in the deglaciated valleys are close to long-term denudation and uplift rates, suggesting that once topography has been equilibrated to glacial erosion processes, subsequent glaciers do not need to produce much bedrock erosion, but mainly sweep out accumulated sediment to maintain equilibrium. • Sediment budget quantified for two catchments in the Teton Range, Wyoming. • Flattened post-glacial topography limits efficient fluvial erosion. • Sediment transport delayed until next glacial advance or uplift steepens system. • Colluvial production rates are close to long-term denudation and uplift rates. • Subsequent glaciers may not need to produce much bedrock erosion. The sediment erosion rate flume (SERF) is used to evaluate various methods to estimate shear stresses in a flume-style erosion rate testing device. Results show that direct shear stress measurements most closely correspond to shear stress estimates obtained from the Colebrook equation using a roughness height of approximately 77% of the sediment particle diameter. Using pressure drops to estimate shear stress appears to underestimate rough sample (grain sizes ) stresses. Likewise, smooth-wall assumptions and analytical methods also appear to produce lower than expected results for similar heights. Abstract: The stabilising effects of natural benthic diatom and bacterial assemblages on cohesive sediments were compared with those caused by physico-chemical binding alone. Cohesive sediment beds were reconstructed in 4 annular laboratory miniflumes, using sediment collected at 5–6m water depth from a local fjord. The sediment was left to stabilise (consolidate) for 1, 2, 5 and 10 days, before being fully resuspended in a series of erosion experiments. The flumes were aerated and subjected to different light/dark conditions; antibiotics were used to isolate diatom from bacteria effects. During consolidation, a constant current velocity was maintained, at a speed well below erosion threshold. ‘Natural’ sediment regained 27% of its original stability after 1 day, and 85% after 5 days. Complete ‘natural’ sediment stability was regained within 10 days. Benthic diatoms (mainly Nitzchia sp., Gyrosigma sp. and Pennales sp.) were responsible for about 80% of the biostabilisation, whilst bacteria contributed ∼12%, indicating the importance of light as a controlling factor for surface sediment stability. Relative to physico-chemical binding, the increase in erosion threshold induced by benthic diatoms was 120%, and by bacteria 20%. Where the assemblage consisted of both diatoms and bacteria, the increase was 150%, indicating that natural bed values are not a simple summation of the two effects, i.e. diatoms plus bacteria. Using the results, a first generation empirical relationship describing the relative contributions of microbenthic and physico-chemical factors in the development of erosion threshold is presented. The Petitcodiac River estuary was modified after the construction of a causeway in 1968 at Moncton, New Brunswick. To address some of the sediment-related issues associated with recent proposed changes to the causeway, it is essential to characterize the sediment properties. Several samples were obtained in 2003 and 2004 at eight sites from the upper 5 km of the existing estuary to determine sediment properties including particle size, bulk density, in situ water content, and organic content. These properties were determined from cores extracted from the field and reconstituted cores prepared in the laboratory. Facilities to evaluate the erosion rates of relatively undisturbed sediment cores from the field were constructed; four box cores were tested in a 10 m flume to determine erosion rates with depth. In most cases, erosion rates increased with an increase in the applied boundary shear stress and were strongly dependent on sediment properties and the depositional history of the bed. Quantitative prediction of the erodibility of muds and mud-sand mixtures is, at present, seldom possible without resorting to direct measurements, preferably in situ. A variety of devices and protocols have been developed for erosion testing, but a considerable degree of uncertainty remains with regard to the accuracy and comparability of the resulting data. This paper argues that differences in experimental protocols and data analysis procedures are a major contributing factor to uncertainty in estimates of sediment erodibility. In particular, the likelihood of a time-dependent erosion rate response under typical erosion testing conditions means that the time history of applied forcing and the chosen protocols for analyzing and interpreting data directly affect derived erosion parameters. Several straightforward ways to address this problem are suggested, including standardization of experimental design and data analysis protocols, explicit recognition and adoption of appropriate erosion model(s), and allowing for potential time/depth changes in erodibility. Experimentalists should also archive and share erosion-test time series, not just derived parameters, so that data sets may be reanalyzed within a different framework if necessary. An example is presented from an intercomparison experiment between the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences Sea Carousel and the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science Microcosm System, carried out in the upper Chesapeake Bay (Maryland, USA) in May 2002. Derived parameters appear to be incompatible when the data are analyzed using different procedures, but real similarities and differences are readily apparent when the data are analyzed using the same procedures.
