The cognitive control network (CCN) that comprises regions of the frontoparietal network, the cingulo-opercular network, and other sub-cortical regions as core structures is commonly activated by events with an increase in information uncertainty. However, it is not clear whether this CCN activation is associated with both information entropy that represents the information conveyed by the context formed by a sequence of events and the surprise that quantifies the information conveyed by a specific type of event in the context. We manipulated entropy and surprise in this functional magnetic resonance imaging study by varying the probability of occurrence of two types of events in both the visual and auditory modalities and measured brain response as a function of entropy and surprise. We found that activation in regions of the CCN increased as a function of entropy and surprise in both the visual and auditory tasks. The frontoparietal network and additional structures in the CCN mediated the relationship between these information measures and behavioral response. These results suggest that the CCN is a high-level modality-general neural entity for the control of the processing of information conveyed by both context and event.

The one-electron Shannon information entropy sum is reformulated in terms of a single entropic quantity dependent on a one-electron phase space quasiprobability density. This entropy is shown to form an upper bound for the entropy of the one-electron Wigner distribution. Two-electron entropies in position and momentum space, and their sum, are introduced, discussed, calculated, and compared to their one-electron counterparts for neutral atoms. The effect of electron correlation on the two-electron entropies is examined for the helium isoelectronic series. A lower bound for the two-electron entropy sum is developed for systems with an even number of electrons. Calculations illustrate that this bound may also be used for systems with an odd number of electrons. This two-electron entropy sum is then recast in terms of a two-electron phase space quasiprobability density. We show that the original Bialynicki-Birula and Mycielski information inequality for the N-electron wave function may also be formulated in terms of an N-electron phase space density. Sustainable development is a practical path to optimize industrial structures and enhance investment efficiency. Investigating risk contagion within ESG industries is a crucial step towards reducing systemic risks and fostering the green evolution of the economy. This research constructs ESG industry indices, taking into account the possibility of extreme tail risks, and employs VaR and CoVaR as measures of tail risk. The TENET network approach is integrated to to capture the structural evolution and direction of information flow among ESG industries, employing information entropy to quantify the topological characteristics of the network model, exploring the risk transmission paths and evolution patterns of ESG industries in an extreme tail risk event. Finally, Mantel tests are conducted to examine the existence of significant risk spillover effects between ESG and traditional industries. The research finds strong correlations among ESG industry indices during stock market crash, Sino–US trade frictions, and the COVID-19 pandemic, with industries such as the COAL, CMP, COM, RT, and RE playing key roles in risk transmission within the network, transmitting risks to other industries. Affected by systemic risk, the information entropy of the TENET network significantly decreases, reducing market information uncertainty and leading market participants to adopt more uniform investment strategies, thus diminishing the diversity of market behaviors. Shannon entropy is used to measure information uncertainty, while the information dimension is used to measure information complexity. Given two probability distributions, the difference can be measured by relative entropy. However, the existing relative entropy does not consider the effect of information dimension. To improve the existing entropy, a new relative entropy is presented in this paper. The information fractal dimension is considered in the proposed relative entropy. The new relative entropy is more generalized than the initial relative entropy. When dimension is not considered, it will degenerate to the initial relative entropy. Another interesting point is that the new relative entropy may have negative values when calculating. The physical meaning is still under exploration. Communication is a purposeful process, especially during disasters, when emergency management officials and citizen journalists attempt to disseminate relevant information to as many affected people as possible. X (previously Twitter), a popular computer-mediated communication (CMC) platform, has become an essential resource for disaster information given its ability to facilitate real-time communication. Past studies on disasters have mainly concentrated on the verbal-linguistic conventions of words and hashtags as the means to convey disaster-related information. Little attention has been given to non-verbal linguistic cues, such as emojis. In this study, we investigate the use of emojis in disaster communication on X by using uncertainty reduction theory as the theoretical framework. We measured information uncertainty in individual tweets and assessed whether information conveyed in external URLs mitigated such uncertainty. We also examined how emojis affect information uncertainty and information dissemination. The statistical results from analyzing tweets related to the 2018 California Camp Fire disaster show that information uncertainty has a negative impact on information dissemination, and the negative impact was amplified when emojis depicted items and objects instead of facial expressions. Conversely, external URLs reduced the negative impact. This study sheds light on the influence of emojis on the dissemination of disaster information on X and provides insights for both academia and emergency management practitioners in using CMC platforms. New insights into intractable industrial challenges can be revealed by framing them in terms of natural science. One intractable industrial challenge is that creative production can be much more financially expensive and time consuming than standardized production. Creative products include a wide range of goods that have one or more original characteristics. The scaling up of creative production is hindered by high financial production costs and long production durations. In this paper, creative production is framed in terms of interactions between entropy and complexity during progressions from emergent pragmatics to action semantics. An analysis of interactions between entropy and complexity is provided that relates established practice in creative production to organizational survival in changing environments. The analysis in this paper is related to assembly theory, which is a recent theoretical development in natural science that addresses how open-ended generation of complex physical objects can emerge from selection in biology. Parallels between assembly practice in industrial production and assembly theory in natural science are explained through constructs that are common to both, such as assembly index. Overall, analyses reported in the paper reveal that interactions between entropy and complexity underlie intractable challenges in creative production, from the production of individual products to the survival of companies. We conjecture that when the uncertainty of scheduling information increases, one should change from deterministic, through robust to, finally, online scheduling techniques. Previously, extensive mathematical investigations have been carried out on the stability of a deterministic schedule for uncertain operation processing times. In this paper, we will use an empirical approach and an entropy measure to justify the transition between deterministic, robust and online scheduling. The use of an entropy measure in our context can be perceived, in a broader sense, as a pro-active approach to deal with changes in the level of information uncertainty and relative importance of each term in the total schedule execution cost. The level of information uncertainty may change due to the performance deterioration of processors (machines or human) and the replacement of old machines with new ones; and the changes in relative importance of cost elements may be due to changes in shop floor priorities and pressure from partners in the supply chain network. Subjective time dilation is an effect discovered using the oddball paradigm, where expanding visual stimuli, but not shrinking ones, induce a prolongation of subjective temporal perception compared to static stimuli. This disparity is often seen as another demonstration of humans' evolved reaction to approaching threats, since visual expansion resembles approaching potential threats and warrants extra attention. In this study, we show that by manipulating the relative sizes of stimuli, both expanding and shrinking stimuli can induce prolongation of subjective time in an oddball paradigm. We propose an alternative explanation based on information theory, linking subjective temporal perception to entropy, an objective property of stimulus that is information uncertainty. The shock increase in global entropy is caused by the lack of reliable information about the factors that determine the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. The analysis of correlations indicates a significant weakening of the relationship between the number of infected and deaths, as well as the dynamics of economic activity, which began to recover in July-August 2020. There is a direct relationship between the level of information uncertainty and the economic activity of agents. The lack of information about the COVID-19 pandemic is offset by the formation of an information space for forecasts and scenarios that formed the overall picture of process controllability. At different stages of the pandemic the behavioral reactions of economic agents are represented by: ignoring the danger of a pandemic; an attempt to protect your economic system from changes; using traditional stabilization methods; the formation of a strategic approach to the organization of economic activity. This paper presents a robust technique to evaluate utilization-oriented renewable energy systems (RESs) for sustainable development in Industry 4.0. This goal is accomplished by incorporating circular intuitionistic fuzzy sets (CIFS) into the multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM). The concept of CIFS efficiently expresses decision makers (DMs) preference in the MCDM process with degrees of membership (DM), degrees of non-membership (NDM), and a parameter radius r that represents the degree of information uncertainty. Firstly, weights are allocated to these criteria through an improved entropy based step-wise weight assessment ratio analysis (SWARA) method. Secondly, the combined compromise solution (CoCoSo) technique is modified to match CIFS requirements to complete the ranking of the available solutions. Thirdly, the robustness of the approach is evaluated by the execution of a sensitivity study, which demonstrates the technique's consistency in the face of shifting circumstances. The study develops a robust three-way MCDM framework namely Entropy-SWARA-COCoSo that include evaluation criteria and prospective sources of RESs. The usefulness of this technique in making complex decisions on sustainable energy in the face of unpredictability is further proven by a comparative study that demonstrates how it outperforms other MCDM methods that are already in practice. The application demonstrates the practical usefulness of merging CIFS with decision-making procedures. Portfolio management typically aims to achieve better returns per unit of risk by building efficient portfolios. The Markowitz framework is the classic approach used when decision-makers know the expected returns and covariance matrix of assets. However, the theory does not always apply when the time horizon of investments is short; the realized return and covariance of different assets are usually far from the expected values, and considering additional factors, such as diversification and information ambiguity, can lead to better portfolios. This study proposes models for constructing efficient portfolios using fuzzy parameters like entropy, return, variance, and entropy membership functions in multi-criteria optimization models. Our approach leverages aspects related to multi-criteria optimization and Shannon entropy to deal with diversification, and fuzzy and fuzzy entropy variants provide a better representation of the ambiguity of the information according to the investors' deadline. We compare 418 optimal portfolios for different objectives (return, variance, and entropy), using data from 2003 to 2023 of indexes from the USA, EU, China, and Japan. We use the Sharpe index as a decision variable, in addition to the multi-criteria decision analysis method TOPSIS. The fitting and modeling of skewed, complex, symmetric, and asymmetric datasets is an exciting research topic in many fields of applied sciences: notably, lifetime, medical, and financial sciences. This paper introduces a heavy-tailed Nadarajah Haghighi model by compounding the heavy-tailed family and Nadarajah Haghighi distribution. The model obtained has three parameters that account for the scale and shape of the distribution. The proposed distribution's fundamental characteristics, such as the probability density, cumulative distribution, hazard rate, and survival functions, are provided, several key statistical properties are established, and several entropy information measures are proposed. Estimation of model parameters is performed via a maximum likelihood estimator procedure. Further, different simulation experiments are conducted to demonstrate the proposed estimator's performance using measures like the average estimate, the average bias, and the associated mean square error. Finally, we apply our proposed model to analyze three different real datasets. In our illustration, we compare the practicality of the recommended model with several well-known competing models. Addressing the challenges posed by the complexity of the structure and the multitude of sensor types installed in space application fluid loop systems, this paper proposes a fault diagnosis method based on an improved D-S evidence theory. The method first employs the Gaussian affiliation function to convert the information acquired by sensors into BPA functions. Subsequently, it utilizes a pignistic probability transformation to convert the multiple subset focal elements into single subset focal elements. Finally, it comprehensively evaluates the credibility and uncertainty factors between evidences, introducing Bray–Curtis dissimilarity and belief entropy to achieve the fusion of conflicting evidence. The proposed method is initially validated on the classic Iris dataset, demonstrating its reliability. Furthermore, when applied to fault diagnosis in space application fluid circuit loop pumps, the results indicate that the method can effectively fuse multiple sensors and accurately identify faults. Underwriters play a pivotal role in the IPO process. Information entropy, a tool for measuring the uncertainty and complexity of information, has been widely applied to various issues in complex networks. Information entropy can quantify the uncertainty and complexity of nodes in the network, providing a unique analytical perspective and methodological support for this study. This paper employs a bipartite network analysis method to construct the relationship network between underwriters and accounting firms, using the centrality of underwriters in the network as a measure of their influence to explore the impact of underwriters' influence on the distribution of interests and audit outcomes. The findings indicate that a more pronounced influence of underwriters significantly increases the ratio of underwriting fees to audit fees. Higher influence often accompanies an increase in abnormal underwriting fees. Further research reveals that companies underwritten by more influential underwriters experience a decline in audit quality. Finally, the study reveals that a well-structured audit committee governance and the rationalization of market sentiments can mitigate the negative impacts of underwriters' influence. The innovation of this paper is that it enriches the content related to underwriters by constructing the relationship network between underwriters and accounting firms for the first time using a bipartite network through the lens of information entropy. This conclusion provides new directions for thinking about the motives and possibilities behind financial institutions' cooperation, offering insights for market regulation and policy formulation. Rice, being a staple food in many countries, necessitates the identification of reliable suppliers to ensure a steady supply. Consequently, it is vital to establish trustworthy vendors for various types of this essential grain who can meet stringent product quality standards. This study aims to identify, analyze, rank, and select primary rice suppliers. The study emphasizes the importance of selecting and managing suitable providers to meet customer demands, proposes a ranking model for rice suppliers, and introduces developed fuzzy MCDM techniques. It proposes an integrated model for selecting rice suppliers, considering factors related to the processes before, during, and after selecting providers within a defined framework. The outcomes shows that rice supplier selection strategy can efficiently identify reliable rice suppliers, improve buyer value, reduce procurement risk, enhance efficiency, and establish strong supply chain relationships in complex decision-making processes. To assess suppliers, the study introduces two advanced integrated approaches and compares them. The fuzzy entropy weight method (EWM) was used to determine the criteria weights. The ranking of rice suppliers was achieved using a fuzzy multi-objective optimization based on ratio analysis (MOORA), fuzzy complex proportional assessment (COPRAS), and combinations of these two methods in different approaches. The methodology supports decision-makers in a rapidly evolving global environment by assisting importers, traders, suppliers, procurement, and logistics management, particularly for non-rice-cultivating countries in rice importation and supplier selection. The numerical analysis is grounded in a real-world case study of selecting rice suppliers in Jordan. The findings reveal that the various strategies yield both similar and different results. Controlling the time evolution of a probability distribution that describes the dynamics of a given complex system is a challenging problem. Achieving success in this endeavour will benefit multiple practical scenarios, e.g., controlling mesoscopic systems. Here, we propose a control approach blending the model predictive control technique with insights from information geometry theory. Focusing on linear Langevin systems, we use model predictive control online optimisation capabilities to determine the system inputs that minimise deviations from the geodesic of the information length over time, ensuring dynamics with minimum "geometric information variability". We validate our methodology through numerical experimentation on the Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process and Kramers equation, demonstrating its feasibility. Furthermore, in the context of the Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process, we analyse the impact on the entropy production and entropy rate, providing a physical understanding of the effects of minimum information variability control. Neighborhood rough set is an important model in feature selection. However, it only determines the granularity of the neighborhood from a feature perspective, while ignoring the influence of sample distribution on the granularity of the neighborhood. Moreover, the use of single and monotonic uncertainty measures limits its ability to obtain high-quality features in complex and large-scale data, as well as perform feature selection for high-dimensional data. To address these issues, we propose several improvements. Firstly, we construct a sample space state function to evaluate the influence of sample distribution on the granularity of the samples. Based on the state of the sample space, we then propose four perspectives of variable-granularity neighborhoods and define the upper and lower approximations for these neighborhoods. Additionally, we define the dependence of variable-granularity neighborhoods and the positive regions from an algebraic perspective. These definitions together form a comprehensive variable-granularity rough set model that can automatically adjust the granularity size according to the sample distribution and select high-quality features. Secondly, in order to comprehensively assess the uncertainty of data, we introduce the information and algebraic perspectives. We propose a multi-perspective mixed entropy measure in the variable-granularity rough set framework. Thirdly, to avoid the problem of selecting redundant features caused by using a monotonic evaluation function in classical neighborhood rough set feature selection algorithms, we propose a non-monotonic feature selection algorithm based on the individual perspective of samples and the mixed entropy measures of the variable-granularity rough set. Finally, to overcome the high time complexity of feature selection on high-dimensional data, we introduce Fish-Score as a preliminary dimensionality reduction technique. Experimental results on eleven datasets and using fifteen algorithms demonstrate that our method not only improves classification accuracy but also effectively reduces the number of features. Purpose: Once introduced and conceptualized as a factor that causes erosion and decay of social institutions and subsequent deinstitutionalization, the notion of entropy is at odds with predictions of institutional isomorphism and seems to directly contradict the tendency toward ever-increasing institutionalization. The purpose of this paper is to offer a resolution of this theoretical inconsistency by revisiting the meaning of entropy and reconceptualizing institutionalization from an information-theoretic point of view. Design/methodology/approach: It is a theoretical paper that offers an information perspective on institutionalization. Findings: A mistaken understanding of the nature and role of entropy in the institutional theory is caused by conceptualizing it as a force that counteracts institutional tendencies and acts in opposite direction. Once institutionalization and homogeneity are seen as a product of natural tendencies in the organizational field, the role of entropy becomes clear. Entropy manifests itself at the level of information processing and corresponds with increasing uncertainty and the decrease of the value of information. Institutionalization thus can be seen as a special case of an increase in entropy and a decrease of knowledge. Institutionalization is a state of maximum entropy. Originality/value: It is explained why institutionalization and institutional persistence are what to be expected in the long run and why information entropy contributes to this tendency. Contrary to the tenets of the institutional work perspective, no intentional efforts of individuals and collective actors are needed to maintain institutions. In theoretical physics and theoretical neuroscience, increased intelligence is associated with increased entropy, which entails potential access to an increased number of states that could facilitate adaptive behavior. Potential to access a larger number of states is a latent entropy as it refers to the number of states that could possibly be accessed, and it is also recognized that functioning needs to be efficient through minimization of manifest entropy. For example, in theoretical physics, the importance of efficiency is recognized through the observation that nature is thrifty in all its actions and through the principle of least action. In this paper, system intelligence is explained as capability to maintain internal stability while adapting to changing environments by minimizing manifest task entropy while maximizing latent system entropy. In addition, it is explained how automated negotiation relates to balancing adaptability and stability; and a mathematical negotiation model is presented that enables balancing of latent system entropy and manifest task entropy in intelligent systems. Furthermore, this first principles analysis of system intelligence is related to everyday challenges in production systems through multiple simulations of the negotiation model. The results indicate that manifest task entropy is minimized when maximization of latent system entropy is used as the criterion for task allocation in the simulated production scenarios. Any real physical process that produces entropy, dissipates energy as heat, or generates mechanical work must do so on a finite timescale. Recently derived thermodynamic speed limits place bounds on these observables using intrinsic timescales of the process. Here, we derive relationships for the thermodynamic speeds for any composite stochastic observable in terms of the timescales of its individual components. From these speed limits, we find bounds on thermal efficiency of stochastic processes exchanging energy as heat and work and bound the rate of entropy change in a system with entropy production and flow. Using the time set by an external clock, we find bounds on the first time to reach any value for the entropy production. As an illustration, we compute these bounds for Brownian particles diffusing in space subject to a constant-temperature heat bath and a time-dependent external force. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent times, distributed denial of service (DDoS) has been one of the most prevalent security threats in internet-enabled networks, with many internet of things (IoT) devices having been exploited to carry out attacks. Due to their inherent security flaws, the attacks seek to deplete the resources of the target network by flooding it with numerous spoofed requests from a distributed system. Research studies have demonstrated that a DDoS attack has a considerable impact on the target network resources and can result in an extended operational outage if not detected. The detection of DDoS attacks has been approached using a variety of methods. In this paper, a comprehensive survey of the methods used for DDoS attack detection on selected internet-enabled networks is presented. This survey aimed to provide a concise introductory reference for early researchers in the development and application of attack detection methodologies in IoT-based applications. Unlike other studies, a wide variety of methods, ranging from the traditional methods to machine and deep learning methods, were covered. These methods were classified based on their nature of operation, investigated as to their strengths and weaknesses, and then examined via several research studies which made use of each approach. In addition, attack scenarios and detection studies in emerging networks such as the internet of drones, routing protocol based IoT, and named data networking were also covered. Furthermore, technical challenges in each research study were identified. To develop a passive acoustic monitoring system for diversity detection and thereby adapt to the challenges of a complex marine environment, this study harnesses the advantages of empirical mode decomposition in analyzing nonstationary signals and introduces energy characteristics analysis and entropy of information theory to detect marine mammal vocalizations. The proposed detection algorithm has five main steps: sampling, energy characteristics analysis, marginal frequency distribution, feature extraction, and detection, which involve four signal feature extraction and analysis algorithms: energy ratio distribution (ERD), energy spectrum distribution (ESD), energy spectrum entropy distribution (ESED), and concentrated energy spectrum entropy distribution (CESED). In an experiment on 500 sampled signals (blue whale vocalizations), in the competent intrinsic mode function (IMF2) signal feature extraction function distribution of ERD, ESD, ESED, and CESED, the areas under the curves (AUCs) of the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were 0.4621, 0.6162, 0.3894, and 0.8979, respectively; the Accuracy scores were 49.90%, 60.40%, 47.50%, and 80.84%, respectively; the Precision scores were 31.19%, 44.89%, 29.44%, and 68.20%, respectively; the Recall scores were 42.83%, 57.71%, 36.00%, and 84.57%, respectively; and the F1 scores were 37.41%, 50.50%, 32.39%, and 75.51%, respectively, based on the threshold of the optimal estimated results. However, traditional two‐dimensional chaotic systems cannot provide sufficient information in the dynamic motion and usually feature low sensitivity to initial system input, which makes them computationally prohibitive in accurate time series prediction and weak periodic component detection. Here, a natural exponential and three‐dimensional chaotic system with higher sensitivity to initial system input conditions showing astonishing extensibility in time series prediction and image processing is proposed. The chaotic performance evaluated theoretically and experimentally by Poincare mapping, bifurcation diagram, phase space reconstruction, Lyapunov exponent, and correlation dimension provides a new perspective of nonlinear physical modeling and validation. The complexity, robustness, and consistency are studied by recursive and entropy analysis and comparison. Today, communication between objects, machines, objects to machines and to humans is possible due to the Internet of Things (IoT). However, their applicability is restricted mostly to areas that are inhabited by humans. Monitoring and tracking in wilderness areas is still a challenging task to date, if not impossible. To bridge this gap, IoT networks are instrumented with Wireless Sensor Networks that are capable of providing remote services through multi-hop communication paradigm. Since these networks are deployed in deserted places, it becomes very crucial to protect the privacy of the location information of critical events or sources that these networks are monitoring. To this end, we propose a new random-walk based routing protocol namely BLS (Backward walk, L-walk, Shortest path walk) to protect the location of critical sources/events. The aim is to break the correlations between the network traffic and render the traffic-analysis efforts of the attacker, in locating the source of information, useless. In addition, we also evaluate the performance of the proposed technique by comparing it with the existing techniques using different privacy metrics such as safety period, entropy and capture ratio. Through this research work, we observed that the performance of source location privacy (SLP) preservation techniques is giving differing results for different privacy metrics. Although the proposed solution outperforms in terms of entropy metric by 104.59-folds improvements compared to Forward Random Walk technique, its performance in terms of safety period and capture ratio metrics are very poor with an improvement of just 0.65-folds and 0.1-fold respectively. With the rapid development of statistics, information entropy is proposed as an important indicator used to quantify information uncertainty. In this paper, maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods are used to obtain the estimators of the entropy for a two-parameter Burr type XII distribution under progressive type-II censored data. In the part of maximum likelihood estimation, the asymptotic confidence intervals of entropy are calculated. In Bayesian estimation, we consider non-informative and informative priors respectively, and asymmetric and symmetric loss functions are both adopted. Meanwhile, the posterior risk is also calculated to evaluate the performances of the entropy estimators against different loss functions. In a numerical simulation, the Lindley approximation and the Markov chain Monte Carlo method were used to obtain the Bayesian estimates. In turn, the highest posterior density credible intervals of the entropy were derived. Finally, average absolute bias and mean square error were used to evaluate the estimators under different methods, and a real dataset was selected to illustrate the feasibility of the above estimation model. Purpose: This study proposes a new model for assessing supply chain sustainability risk integrating subjectivity and objectivity of decision-maker. Research has shown the vacancy of study in dealing with the above issue. To fill this research gap, a new decision support model considering the subjectivity and objectivity of decision-makers in assigning the weight of the supply chain risk reprioritization criteria is presented and demonstrated using a case example. Design/methodology/approach: This study adopts a new decision support model for assessing supply chain sustainability risk based on additional failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) parameters and its integration with preference selection index (PSI) methodology and the Shannon entropy. A case example of the supply chain small and medium enterprise (SME) producing handy crafts has been used in this study. Findings: The result of the study reveals critical sustainability risk dimensions and their risk elements demanding management attention to support realization to a more sustainable business operation. Research limitations/implications: The use of a single case study is often associated as a limitation in the research studies, and this study is based on findings from SMEs in the handy craft sector in a developing country. Nonetheless, future studies may focus on replicating this study using more samples. This preliminary study provides academics and practitioners with an exemplar of supply chain sustainability risk assessment from the SME in a developing country. Practical implications: The result of this study is beneficial for practitioners, particularly owner-managers of SMEs who can use this study as guidance on how to identify and select the critical sustainability risks and plan mitigating strategies accordingly. Originality/value: Scientific effort on appraising criticality of supply chain sustainability risks considering subjectivity and objectivity of decision-maker simultaneously is missing in earlier studies. Information entropy of ultrasound imaging recently receives much attention in the diagnosis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). DMD is the most common muscular disorder; patients lose their ambulation in the later stages of the disease. Ultrasound imaging enables routine examinations and the follow-up of patients with DMD. Conventionally, the probability distribution of the received backscattered echo signals can be described using statistical models for ultrasound parametric imaging to characterize muscle tissue. Small-window entropy imaging is an efficient nonmodel-based approach to analyzing the backscattered statistical properties. This study explored the feasibility of using ultrasound small-window entropy imaging in evaluating the severity of DMD. A total of 85 participants were recruited. For each patient, ultrasound scans of the gastrocnemius were performed to acquire raw image data for B-mode and small-window entropy imaging, which were compared with clinical diagnoses of DMD by using the receiver operating characteristic curve. The results indicated that entropy imaging can visualize changes in the information uncertainty of ultrasound backscattered signals. The median with interquartile range (IQR) of the entropy value was 4.99 (IQR: 4.98–5.00) for the control group, 5.04 (IQR: 5.01–5.05) for stage 1 patients, 5.07 (IQR: 5.06–5.07) for stage 2 patients, and 5.07 (IQR: 5.06–5.07) for stage 3 patients. The diagnostic accuracies were 89.41%, 87.06%, and 72.94% for ≥stage 1, ≥stage 2, and ≥stage 3, respectively. Comparisons with previous studies revealed that the small-window entropy imaging technique exhibits higher diagnostic performance than conventional methods. The literature of multiple attribute decision making (MADM) is fruitful since there are various and successful applications of different fuzzy set extensions such as intuitionistic, Pythagorean and q‐Rung orthopair fuzzy sets (IFS, PFS and q‐ROFS). Besides their powerful aspects, some definitional limitations are known. In order to eradicate these boundaries regarding the definitions of membership and non‐membership degrees, linear Diophantine fuzzy set (LDFS) concept has been recently emerged. By considering two parameters, LDFS extends the representation area of the previous fuzzy set definitions and provides more extensive human judgement coverage field. In this study, the first distance and entropy measures in the literature have been developed for LDFSs. Their axiomatic definitions are given, and the proofs are shown. Also, thanks to our extensive literature review, we became aware that there is no MADM extension dedicatedly proposed for LDFS. So, the first MADM method extension for LDFS environment has also been developed in this study. A very well‐known MADM approach, TOPSIS, has been extended into LDFS environment for the first time in the literature. World models is a construct that is used to represent internal models of the world. It is an important construct for human-artificial intelligence systems, because both natural and artificial agents can have world models. The term, natural agents, encompasses individual people and human organizations. Many human organizations apply artificial agents that include machine learning. In this paper, it is explained how human survival first principles of interactions between energy and entropy influence organization's world models, and hence their implementations of machine learning. First, the world models construct is related to human organizations. This is done in terms of the construct's origins in psychology theory-building during the 1930s through its applications in systems science during the 1970s to its recent applications in computational neuroscience. Second, it is explained how human survival first principles of interactions between energy and entropy influence organizational world models. Third, a practical example is provided of how survival first principles lead to opposing organizational world models. Fourth, it is explained how opposing organizational world models can constrain applications of machine learning. Overall, the paper highlights the influence of interactions between energy and entropy on organizations' applications of machine learning. In the classification calculation, the data are sometimes not unique and there are different values and probabilities. Then, it is meaningful to develop the appropriate methods to make classification decision. To solve this issue, this paper proposes the machine learning methods based on a probabilistic decision tree (DT) under the multi-valued preference environment and the probabilistic multi-valued preference environment respectively for the different classification aims. First, this paper develops a data pre-processing method to deal with the weight and quantity matching under the multi-valued preference environment. In this method, we use the least common multiple and weight assignments to balance the probability of each preference. Then, based on the training data, this paper introduces the entropy method to further optimize the DT model under the multi-valued preference environment. After that, the corresponding calculation rules and probability classifications are given. In addition, considering the different numbers and probabilities of the preferences, this paper also uses the entropy method to develop the DT model under the probabilistic multi-valued preference environment. Furthermore, the calculation rules and probability classifications are similarly derived. Tool wear condition monitoring during the machining process is one of the most important considerations in precision manufacturing. Cutting force is one of the signals that has been widely used for tool wear condition monitoring, which contains the dynamical information of tool wear conditions. This paper proposes a novel multivariate cutting force-based tool wear monitoring method using one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D CNN). Firstly, multivariate variational mode decomposition (MVMD) is used to process the multivariate cutting force signals. The multivariate band-limited intrinsic mode functions (BLIMFs) are obtained, which contain a large number of nonlinear and nonstationary tool wear characteristics. Afterwards, the proposed modified multiscale permutation entropy (MMPE) is used to measure the complexity of multivariate BLIMFs. The entropy values on multiple scales are calculated as condition indicators in tool wear condition monitoring. Finally, the one-dimensional feature vectors are constructed and employed as the input of 1D CNN to achieve accurate and stable tool wear condition monitoring. The uncertainty of information is an important issue that must be faced when dealing with decision-making problems. Randomness and fuzziness are the two most common types of uncertainty. In this paper, we propose a multicriteria group decision-making method based on intuitionistic normal cloud and cloud distance entropy. First, the backward cloud generation algorithm for intuitionistic normal clouds is designed to transform the intuitionistic fuzzy decision information given by all experts into an intuitionistic normal cloud matrix to avoid the loss and distortion of information. Second, the distance measurement of the cloud model is introduced into the information entropy theory, and the concept of cloud distance entropy is proposed. Then, the distance measurement for intuitionistic normal clouds based on numerical features is defined and its properties are discussed, based on which the criterion weight determination method under intuitionistic normal cloud information is proposed. In addition, the VIKOR method, which integrates group utility and individual regret, is extended to the intuitionistic normal cloud environment, and thus the ranking results of the alternatives are obtained. This paper develops a dynamic portfolio selection model incorporating economic uncertainty for business cycles. It is assumed that the financial market at each point in time is defined by a hidden Markov model, which is characterized by the overall equity market returns and volatility. The risk associated with investment decisions is measured by the exponential Rényi entropy criterion, which summarizes the uncertainty in portfolio returns. Assuming asset returns are projected by a regime-switching regression model on the two market risk factors, we develop an entropy-based dynamic portfolio selection model constrained with the wealth surplus being greater than or equal to the shortfall over a target and the probability of shortfall being less than or equal to a specified level. In the empirical analysis, we use the select sector ETFs to test the asset pricing model and examine the portfolio performance. Weekly financial data from 31 December 1998 to 30 December 2018 is employed for the estimation of the hidden Markov model including the asset return parameters, while the out-of-sample period from 3 January 2019 to 30 April 2022 is used for portfolio performance testing. It is found that, under both the empirical Sharpe and return to entropy ratios, the dynamic portfolio under the proposed strategy is much improved in contrast with mean variance models. Multi-source information fusion is widely used because of its similarity to practical engineering situations. With the development of science and technology, the sources of information collected under engineering projects and scientific research are more diverse. To extract helpful information from multi-source information, in this paper, we propose a multi-source information fusion method based on the Dempster-Shafer (DS) evidence theory with the negation of reconstructed basic probability assignments (nrBPA). To determine the initial basic probability assignment (BPA), the Gaussian distribution BPA functions with padding terms are used. After that, nrBPAs are determined by two processes, reassigning the high blur degree BPA and transforming them into the form of negation. In addition, evidence of preliminary fusion is obtained using the entropy weight method based on the improved belief entropy of nrBPAs. The final fusion results are calculated from the preliminary fused evidence through the Dempster's combination rule. In the experimental section, the UCI iris data set and the wine data set are used for validating the arithmetic processes of the proposed method. In the comparative analysis, the effectiveness of the BPA determination using a padded Gaussian function is verified by discussing the classification task with the iris data set. Subsequently, the comparison with other methods using the cross-validation method proves that the proposed method is robust. Notably, the classification accuracy of the iris data set using the proposed method can reach an accuracy of 97.04%, which is higher than many other methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ensemble transfer entropy ( T E e n s e m b l e ) refers to the transfer entropy estimated from an ensemble of realizations. Due to its time-resolved analysis, it is adapted to analyze the dynamic interaction between brain regions. However, in the traditional T E e n s e m b l e , multiple sets of surrogate data should be used to construct the null hypothesis distribution, which dramatically increases the computational complexity. To reduce the computational cost, a fast, efficient T E e n s e m b l e with a simple statistical test method is proposed here, in which just one set of surrogate data is involved. To validate the improved efficiency, the simulated neural signals are used to compare the characteristics of the novel T E e n s e m b l e with those of the traditional T E e n s e m b l e . The results show that the time consumption is reduced by two or three magnitudes in the novel T E e n s e m b l e . Importantly, the proposed T E e n s e m b l e could accurately track the dynamic interaction process and detect the strength and the direction of interaction robustly even in the presence of moderate noises. The novel T E e n s e m b l e reaches its steady state with the increased samples, which is slower than the traditional method. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the novel T E e n s e m b l e was verified in the actual neural signals. Watershed characteristics are one of the crucial factors affecting watershed hydrologic processes. Watershed hydrologic process regulation has been shown to be an effective tool for flash flood management. This study aims to propose a coupling method to evaluate the flash flood hazard degree of small hilly ungauged watersheds based on their watershed characteristic factors and identify sensitive factors influencing flash flood hazard. In this regard, nine watershed characteristic factors were selected for flash flood hazard sensitivity analysis. The variable fuzzy method (VFM) was proposed to calculate the eigenvalue of flash flood hazard degree for each small hilly watershed, and mutual entropy was proposed to identify sensitive factors influencing hazard degree. As an example, the sensitive factors in Licheng County with 119 small hilly watersheds in China are identified and further verified by stepwise regression analysis, which are mean watershed slope, soil moisture, average width of the mainstream, and watershed shape factor. This study shows that VFM and mutual entropy can be used jointly to identify the sensitive factors associated with the flash flood hazard in small hilly ungauged watersheds. Business models have been a popular topic in research and practice for more than twenty years. During this time, frameworks for formulating business models have been developed, such as the business model canvas. Moreover, different business model frameworks have been proposed for different sectors. Yet, these frameworks have the fundamental shortcoming of not addressing directly and persistently the primary objective of start-ups: to survive in changing environments. The aim of the action research reported in this paper is to overcome that fundamental shortcoming. This is an important topic because the majority of start-ups do not survive. In this paper, first principles for survival in changing environments are related to business models. In particular, action research to reframe start-ups as adaptable stable systems based on synchronous business models is reported. The paper provides three principal contributions. The contribution to business model theory building is to relate survival first principles revealed through natural science research to business models. Reference to first principles highlight that survival depends on maintaining both external adaptability and internal stability through synchronization with changing environments. The second contribution is to business model practice through describing a simple business modeling method that is based on the scientific first principles. Handing uncertain information is one of the research focuses currently. For the sake of great ability of handing uncertain information, Dempster-Shafer evidence theory (D-S theory) has been widely used in various fields of uncertain information processing. However, when highly contradictory evidence appears, the results of the classical Dempster combination rules (DCR) can be counterintuitive. Aiming at this defect, by considering the relationship between the evidence and its own characteristics, the proposed method is a new method of conflicting evidence management based on non-extensive entropy and Lance distance in uncertain scenarios. Firstly, the Lance distance function is used to measure the degree of discrepancy and conflict between evidences, and the credibility of evidence is expressed by matrix. Introducing non-extensive entropy to measure the amount of information about evidence and express the uncertainty of evidence. Secondly, the discount coefficient of the final fusion evidence is measured by considering the credibility and uncertainty of the evidence, and the original evidence is modified by the discount coefficient. Then, the final result is obtained by evidence fusion with DCR. Finally, two numerical examples are provided to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method, and the utility of our work is demonstrated through an application of the active lane change to avoid obstacles to the autonomous driving of new energy vehicles. Organizational neuroscience is recognized in organizational behavior literature as offering an interpretive framework that can shed new light on existing organizational challenges. In this paper, findings from neuroscience studies concerned with adaptive behavior for ecological fitness are applied to explore industrial adaptive behavior. This is important because many companies are not able to manage dynamics between adaptability and stability. The reported analysis relates business-to-business signaling in competitive environments to three levels of inference. In accordance with neuroscience studies concerned with adaptive behavior, trade-offs between complexity and accuracy in business-to-business signaling and inference are explained. In addition, signaling and inference are related to risks and ambiguities in competitive industrial markets. Overall, the paper provides a comprehensive analysis of industrial adaptive behavior in terms of relevant neuroscience constructs. We analyze the empirical series of malaria incidence, using the concepts of autocorrelation, Hurst exponent and Shannon entropy with the aim of uncovering hidden variables in those series. From the simulations of an agent model for malaria spreading, we first derive models of the malaria incidence, the Hurst exponent and the entropy as functions of gametocytemia, measuring the infectious power of a mosquito to a human host. Second, upon estimating the values of three observables—incidence, Hurst exponent and entropy—from the data set of different malaria empirical series we predict a value of the gametocytemia for each observable. In real applications of artificial and intelligent decision-making systems, how to represent the knowledge involved with uncertain information is still an open issue. The negation method has great significance to address this issue from another perspective. However, it has the limitation that can be used only for the negation of the probability distribution. In this article, therefore, we propose a generalized model of the traditional one, so that it can have more powerful capability to represent the knowledge, and uncertainty measure. In particular, we first define a vector representation of complex-valued distribution. Then, an entropy measure is proposed for the complex-valued distribution, called $\mathcal {X}$ entropy. In this context, a transformation function to acquire the negation of the complex-valued distribution is exploited on the basis of the newly defined $\mathcal {X}$ entropy. Afterward, the properties of this negation function are analyzed, and investigated, as well as some special cases. Finally, we study the negation function on the view from the $\mathcal {X}$ entropy. This work dives into the spectral realm of acoustic emission waveforms. The acoustic emission waveforms carry a footprint of source, its mechanism, and the information of the medium through which it travels. The idiosyncrasies of these waveforms cannot be visualized from the time-domain parameters. The complex fracture process of the heterogeneous composite, such as concrete, reflects in the spectral disorder of acoustic emission signals. The use of wavelet entropy is proposed to estimate the spectral disorder. To evaluate wavelet entropy, the relative energy distribution in frequency sub-bands is determined using the wavelet transform. The Shannon entropy formulation as a wavelet entropy is utilized for discriminating spatiotemporally distributed acoustic emission events according to their respective level of disorder. The possible twofold application of the wavelet entropy as a signal discriminator and a damage index is qualitatively demonstrated. The increase in the statistical variance of wavelet entropy distribution with the increase in stress level reveals the presence of multi-sources as well as multi-mechanistic fracture process. It is necessary to evaluate satellite sea surface salinity (SSS) L3 products prior to using them to analyze SSS variability. Instead of performing comparison analysis on the accuracy of products (e.g., Root Mean Square Deviation (RMSD)), two new evaluation methods, information entropy and local variance, are introduced to assess the performance of satellite SSS products in resolving SSS fronts in the tropical Pacific from a new perspective. The satellite SSS except for SMOS BEC has captured the zonal displacement of SSS fronts under the strong El Niño in 2015. It is effective to use entropy and local variance for the assessment of the capability of satellite SSS products, which can provide new sights for analyzing the variability and distributions of SSS. The spatial distribution of local variance identified the abnormal SSS of the satellite products on or near the islands and the result of SSS entropy is beneficial to the analysis of the mechanisms of the SSS variability. In general, the SMOS CATDS and SMAP_70 km product is recommended for scientific applications in the tropical Pacific. Plain Language Summary: It is important to make data validation prior to the application of the satellite SSS data in order to ensure data accuracy and the fidelity of the research findings. An information system (IS) is an important mathematical tool for artificial intelligence. A fuzzy probabilistic information system (FPIS), the combination of some fuzzy relations in the same universe which satisfies the probability distribution, can be seen as an IS with fuzzy relations. A FPIS overcomes the shortcoming that rough set theory assumes elements in the universe with equal probability and leads to lose some useful information. This paper integrates the probability distribution into the fuzzy relations in a FPIS and studies its reduction. Firstly, the concept of a FPIS is introduced and its reduction is proposed. Then, the fuzzy relations in a FPIS are divided into three categories (P-necessary, P-relatively necessary and P-unnecessary fuzzy relations) according to their importance.
