Background: While patients from low socioeconomic (SES) backgrounds are at increased risk of developing chronic health conditions, typically managed within general practice, they report fewer positive consultation experiences with GPs than patients from higher SES groups. To our knowledge, existing research does not provide an in-depth understanding of the GP conducts that contribute to positive consultations. Aim: To identify the factors that patients from low SES backgrounds perceive as essential for creating good consultation experiences. Design & setting: This exploratory pilot study was performed in GP clinics in Melbourne, Australia. Method: We used an appreciative inquiry approach, focused on positive consultation experiences, previously shown to be helpful for researching sensitive topics. Nine patients from low SES backgrounds, who reported positive consultation experiences, undertook a semi-structured qualitative interview while watching the video recording of their GP consultation. Four different GPs were captured in the recordings. Inductive thematic coding was performed by two researchers. Results: The following four categories were developed: 1) the doctor’s demeanour and how the patient was made to feel during the consultation drove their engagement; 2) an established and collaborative therapeutic relationship was of high importance to patients; 3) a doctor’s therapeutic skillset was integral to patient confidence and comfort; and 4) patients appreciated verbal and non-verbal communication techniques. In each interview, the discussion about the video-recorded consultation often triggered reflections about previous consultations with the respective GP. Conclusion: For patients from low SES groups, positive consultation experiences were underpinned by perceived continuity of care with a specific GP who consistently showed good communication skills and key interpersonal characteristics. This research is a small step towards increasing our understanding of the experience of individuals from low SES backgrounds in primary care and the existing health inequities within this area. Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory and neurodegenerative condition of the central nervous system that commonly strikes in young adulthood and has no cure. Many people living with MS (PwMS) will have significant contact with a range of healthcare professionals (HCPs). To achieve optimal health outcomes in MS, it is important to understand factors that contribute to positive or negative healthcare experiences. Previous studies have shown that PwMS want clear communication and in‐depth relationships with their HCPs. However, many studies have lacked qualitative feedback from HCPs. Objective: This study aimed to investigate healthcare experiences of PwMS and HCPs and identify areas that are working well and areas that could be improved. Methods: Semistructured interviews with 15 PwMS and 11 HCPs (seven neurologists, four MS nurses) from across Australia were conducted. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically. Results: Both PwMS and HCPs valued clear communication, recognized uncertainties associated with MS and highlighted the importance of rapport. PwMS focused on decision‐making, understanding roles and expectations, self‐directed management and their needs for support. HCPs discussed issues related to medical management, providing hope and reassurance, barriers to healthcare and multidisciplinary care. Conclusion: Greater transparency and communication, particularly around the approach to care and the roles played by HCPs, is likely to enhance healthcare experiences and contribute to better health outcomes for PwMS. Background: Current guidelines recommend that patients attending general practice should be screened for excess weight, and provided with weight management advice. Objective: This study sought to elicit the views of people with overweight and obesity about the role of GPs in initiating conversations about weight management. Methods: Participants with a body mass index ≥25 were recruited from a region in Australia to take part in a Community Jury. Over 2 days, participants (n = 11) deliberated on two interconnected questions: 'Should GPs initiate discussions about weight management?' And 'if so, when: (a) opportunistically, (b) in the context of disease prevention, (c) in the context of disease management or (d) other?' The jury deliberations were analysed qualitatively to elicit their views and recommendations. Results: The jury concluded GPs should be discussing weight management, but within the broader context of general health. The jury were divided about the utility of screening. Jurors felt GPs should initiate the conversation if directly relevant for disease prevention or management, otherwise GPs should provide opportunities for patients to consent to the issue being raised. Conclusion: The jury's verdict suggests informed people affected by overweight and obesity believe GPs should discuss weight management with their patients. GPs should feel reassured that discussions are likely to be welcomed by patients, particularly if embedded within a more holistic focus on person‐centred care. Introduction: With the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Australia, occupational therapy graduates need to be adequately prepared to support service users in this new policy context. There is, however, limited research informed by service users themselves to inform contemporary occupational therapy curriculum redesign. The aims of this study were: (a) to explore the experience of occupational therapy service provision from the perspective of service users with lived experience of disability; (b) to gain an understanding of the perceptions of people with lived experience of disability regarding the NDIS and whether it will change how they work with occupational therapists; (c) to gain an understanding of the perspectives of people with lived experience of disability regarding the NDIS, and how this influences curriculum content for occupational therapy education. Methods: A pragmatic qualitative design, underpinned by the constructivist paradigm was utilised. Demographic surveys and semi‐structured interviews were completed with 10 participants who were purposively recruited. Peer debriefing and use of an audit trail were undertaken to enhance the rigour of the analysis. Results: Three themes were identified: (a) Occupational therapists as gatekeepers for equipment provision; (b) experience of the NDIS (Knowledge and understanding of the NDIS; Uncertainty regarding the NDIS; Choice and control in the NDIS); (c) curriculum content for occupational therapy. Conclusion: The insights provided by the people with lived experience in this study inform key areas of focus for occupational therapy curriculum to adequately prepare graduates to work in the evolving NDIS environment. Somatic mutations in key oncogenes in non-small cell lung cancer ( NSCLC) and melanoma are important determinants of tumour sensitivity to targeted therapies. Molecular screening for these predictive biomarkers is routinely used to inform treatment decisions; however, little is known about how best to communicate testing and results to patients. This qualitative study aimed to explore advanced cancer patients' attitudes and experiences regarding somatic tumour screening to identify their information and support needs. Sixteen NSCLC and eight melanoma patients who had undergone screening participated in a semi-structured face-to-face or telephone interview exploring their understanding, views, preferences and needs regarding screening. Interviews were audiotaped, transcribed and analysed for thematic patterns. Participants expressed positive views and unequivocal acceptance of screening, and understood its role in guiding treatment selection. They preferred to receive information verbally through simple, non-technical language from their oncologist with additional take-home materials. Patients were interested in learning about their test results, but wanted discussion to be focused on practical matters relevant to treatment. While receiving their screening results was not considered burdensome, information overload and cancer-related distress were identified as barriers to test comprehension. Patients may benefit from information and decision-related tools to better understand genomic information and adequately support psychosocial outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
