This paper discusses the arguments found in a student’ academic writing, namely a thesis. It attempts to show how an argument is built in a student’s thesis in the Department of Islamic Education, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Education, Islamic University of Bandung by drawing upon the theory of Toulmin (2003). The results of this research show that verse, hadith, and exegesis become the starting point of the argument to be presented in the thesis. However, there is a discrepancy between the verses used as warrant’s claim and the data on the student’s thesis. Consequently, the argument becomes unstable because of the inconsistencies of argument elements. The implication of this research is concerned with the supervision process of a student’s thesis that should give more emphasis on how the student makes his or her arguments correctly.

With the arrival of the new technologies and the increase of the air operations that are realized inside our airspace, it is necessary to set up a process that regulates the information transmission between diverse service providers and the aeronautical information system. In the present paper, a finite-dimensional phenomenological model of unsteady interaction of a rigid plate with a flow is proposed. It is assumed that the plate performs translational motion across the flow. The internal dynamics of the flow is modeled by the attached second order dynamical system. It is shown that the model allows satisfactory agreement with experimental data. With the developed model an inverse problem of dynamics is examined for the situation where the plate performing uniform translational motion at some moment begins uniform deceleration and finally stops. It is shown that for sufficiently large values of the plate acceleration for some time range the flow does not resist the motion of the plate but “accelerates” it. It is shown also that the equations of motion in the context of the proposed model can be reduced to the integro-differential form, and comparison with the known model of S. M. Belotserkovsky is performed. The structural resemblance of the motion equations for a body in flow in both models is noted. The domain of applicability of the quasi-stationary model is examined. The Euler problem on the stability of a thin elastic rod under compressing forces is widely known. In a number of papers this problem is generalized to finding the shape of such a rod under the simultaneous action of a compressing force and a torsional moment. The shape is determined by solving a complex nonlinear boundary value problem by numerical methods. In airborne gravimetry the data received from an airborne survey system is used to obtain the specific gravity along the aircraft path and to construct maps of the gravity anomaly. The quality of the maps depends largely on both the instrument noise and modeling errors. The paper discusses the errors in the estimated gravity caused by imperfect calibration of the gravimeter and how to calibrate the instrument using the survey flights data and the gravity maps. With more and more information available on the Internet, the task of making personalized recommendations to assist the user's navigation has become increasingly important. Considering there might be millions of users with different backgrounds accessing a Web site everyday, it is infeasible to build a separate recommendation system for each user. To address this problem, clustering techniques can first be employed to discover user groups. Then, user navigation patterns for each group can be discovered, to allow the adaptation of a Web site to the interest of each individual group. In this paper, we propose to model user access sequences as stochastic processes, and a mixture of Markov models based approach is taken to cluster users and to capture the sequential relationships inherent in user access histories. Several important issues that arise in constructing the Markov models are also addressed. The first issue lies in the complexity of the mixture of Markov models. To improve the efficiency of building/maintaining the mixture of Markov models, we develop a lightweight adapt-ive algorithm to update the model parameters without recomputing model parameters from scratch. The second issue concerns the proper selection of training data for building the mixture of Markov models. We investigate two different training data selection strategies and perform extensive experiments to compare their effectiveness on a real dataset that is generated by a Web-based knowledge management system, Livelink. The article explores on the simple procedure for processing event recorder data. The strip chart device called event recorder reads the state of an electrical switch with reference to time used in various studies is said to require a long to process the gathered data. According to the author, the usual procedure uses scissors to cut the strip charts into segments representing the desired time base which is tedious. He suggests the use of a stapler and paper cutter as an alternative for collecting the gathered data.
