The article reports that Avaya is hoping to tap into a growing opportunity for Internet Protocol telephony deployments in the British public sector as the refresh cycle for PBX networks installed before 2000 starts to kick in. According to Avaya EMEA convergence business development director Roger Jones, a lot of public sector bodies did work on their PBX networks in 1998 in readiness for Y2K and he is starting to see the early phases of that refresh cycle.

This article reports that Great Britain's first WiMAX network is under construction in Kent, England. According to wireless network provider Telabria, the wireless broadband network will be marketed to residential and business customers in the south east. Due for trials in January and a commercial launch in the summer, the network will also be used to provide backhaul services to the firm's own network of WiFi hotspots in the region.

Travel agent Thomas Cook AG expects to reduce annual network costs by £1m after rolling out a high-speed IP data network from British Telecommunications PLC. The network forms part of Thomas Cook's £120m co-sourcing agreement with Accenture and will connect the company's headquarters, four call centres, two datacentres and 17 airports in Great Britain. It will integrate into 643 high street Thomas Cook stores using ADSL and ISDN, in one of the country's largest deployments of broadband. Third generation mobile services will not take off until at least 2006, according to research from telecoms research group Analysys.
