Objective: A systematic review and meta‐analysis were conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ablative laser combined with pulsed dye laser to treat pathological scars. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted to identify all blind, randomized, controlled trials of ablative laser and pulsed dye laser for treating pathological scars. The databases PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane were used. All research on ablative laser combined with PDL in treating pathological scars with ablative laser or no treatment as controls were included in the meta‐analysis. The retrieved studies' reference lists were thoroughly examined. Results: POSAS and VSS were used as evaluation criteria in seven studies involving 189 patients. Effect of combined laser group therapy (−1.259 95% confidence interval, −1.515 to −1.003; p < 0.0001). The difference between the combined treatment and control groups was (−1.375; 95% CI, −1.727 to −1.023; p < 0.0001) and (−1.150; 95% CI, −1.523 to −0.777; p < 0.0001). Conclusions: Ablative laser combined with PDL is more effective and safer than ablative laser or PDL alone in the treatment of pathological scars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The G protein-coupled receptor P2RY2 protein of the purinergic receptor family is involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Naturally occurring antibodies against P2RY2 (NAbs-P2RY2) are present in human plasma, with their clinical relevance in AD unknown.Objective: To explore the alteration of NAbs-P2RY2 in AD patients and its associations with biomarkers and cognition of AD patients.Methods: The levels of naturally occurring antibodies against the four extracellular domains of P2RY2 (NAbs-P2RY2-1, NAbs-P2RY2-2, NAbs-P2RY2-3, and NAbs-P2RY2-4) were measured in the plasma of 55 AD patients, 28 non-AD dementia patients, and 70 cognitively normal participants. The correlations of autoantibody levels with cognitive scale scores, AD plasma biomarkers, and brain amyloid burden were examined.Results: NAbs-P2RY2-1, NAbs-P2RY2-3, and NAbs-P2RY2-4 were reduced in AD patients. Plasma levels of NAbs-P2RY2-2 and NAbs-P2RY2-3 levels were positively associated with cognitive and functional performances. Among these antibodies, plasma NAbs-P2RY2-2 levels were positively associated with plasma amyloid-β 42 levels. While plasma NAbs-P2RY2-3 levels were negatively associated with brain amyloid burden in AD patients.Conclusion: These findings indicate an alteration of humoral immunity against P2RY2 in AD patients. Background: Recent studies have shown that monocytes can phagocytize the tau protein, which may ameliorate tau-type pathology in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, there are few clinical studies on the relationship between monocytes and tau-type pathology in AD patients.Objective: We aimed to explore changes in peripheral monocytes and their association with tau protein in AD patients.Methods: A total of 127 clinically diagnosed AD patients and 100 age- and sex-matched cognitively normal controls were recruited for analysis of the correlation of plasma tau levels with the blood monocyte count. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from 46 AD patients and 88 controls were further collected to analyze the correlation of CSF tau and amyloid-β (Aβ) levels with the blood monocyte count. 105 clinically diagnosed mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients and 149 age- and sex-matched cognitively normal controls were recruited from another cohort for verification.Results: Compared to normal controls, AD patients showed a significant reduction in the blood monocyte count. In addition, the monocyte count of AD patients was negatively correlated with CSF t-tau and p-tau levels but not with plasma tau levels. In normal people, monocyte count lack correlation with tau levels both in plasma and CSF. Monocyte count were not correlated with CSF Aβ levels in either group but were negatively correlated with CSF tau/Aβ42 levels in the AD group. We had further verified the correlations of monocyte count with CSF tau levels in another cohort.Conclusion: This study suggests that monocytes may play an important role in the clearance of tau protein in the brain. Joint roughness coefficient (JRC) is a major factor that affects the mechanical properties of rock joints. Statistical methods that are used to calculate the JRC increasingly depend on a sampling interval (Δx). The variation rules of fitting parameters a, b, and b/a at different Δx values were analyzed on the basis of the relationship between the JRC and statistical parameter Z2. The relationship between the fitting parameters a and b was deduced in accordance with the ten standard profiles proposed by Barton. Empirical formulas for the JRC, Z2, and Δx were also established. The estimation accuracy of the JRC was the highest in the analysis of Δx values within 0.1–5.0 mm. JRC tests were conducted through inverse value comparative analysis. Results showed that the outcome calculated using the general formula and the JRC inverse values demonstrate improved agreement and verify the rationality of the general formula. The proposed formula can perform rapid and simple JRC calculation within the Δx range of 0.1–5.0 mm using Z2, thereby indicating favorable application prospects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study compared the efficacy of ultrasound elastography (UE), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the combination of the two methods (UE+MRI) in the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant breast tumors. In total, 86 patients with breast masses were recruited and evaluated by UE, MRI and UE+MRI. Strain ratios of UE were calculated for the breast mass and adjacent normal tissues. In addition, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was obtained, while the sensitivity and specificity were calculated to determine the optimal cut‑off point for the differential diagnosis. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) was also calculated to evaluate the diagnostic performance of these methods. The results indicated that the diagnostic accuracy of UE+MRI was significantly higher compared with the UE or MRI methods in the differential diagnosis of invasive ductal, invasive lobular, intraductal papillary, medullary and mucinous carcinomas (all P<0.05). The optimal cut‑off points of ROC curve of the Strain Ratio in the diagnosis of breast lesions were 2.81, 3.76 and 3.42 for UE, MRI and UE+MRI, respectively. Furthermore, the AUC values were 86.7, 79.2 and 91.4%, while the diagnostic accuracy rates were 82.5, 75.5 and 95.3%, for UE, MRI and UE+MRI, respectively. Accuracy rate differences between UE and MRI or between UE and UE+MRI were statistically significant (P<0.05), whereas no significant difference existed between MRI and UE+MRI (P>0.05). Finally, the diagnostic consistency of the UE+MRI method with the pathological diagnosis was higher compared with UE or MRI alone. In conclusion, the combination of UE and MRI is superior to the use of UE or MRI alone in the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant breast masses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Membrane technology plays a critical role in solving worldwide water scarcity and security issues. However, membrane aging causes deterioration or complete failure of membrane performance. In this work, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane aging induced by ultraviolet (UV) and NaOCl were investigated and compared. The skin layer was completely destroyed in 2d by UV irradiation under a dry state, which further caused deformation in the sublayer and pore shrinkage. The water layer on the membrane surface protected the skin layer from damage by UV till 8d under the wet state. NaOCl had a moderate influence, the flux was firstly decreased as the hydrophobicity of the membrane increased, and then increased due to pore enlargement. Membrane aging also resulted in a lower virus rejection, which highlighted the biosafety concern in membrane-based wastewater treatment. Infrared and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy confirmed that the hydrophilic additive was first oxidated in both processes. β-PVDF segment changed before α-PVDF under UV, during which the C C bond was formed by the dehydrofluorination reaction. But the α-PVDF segment was attacked firstly by NaOCl, the radical reaction occurred both at CH 2 -CF 2 and CH=CF segments. This work studied two aging patterns in the membrane lifecycle and demonstrated the aging mechanism, which shed light on membrane development and maintenance in the future. Introduction: Inhaled budesonide is a novel approach to prevent acute mountain sickness (AMS). However, its mechanism is not completely understood. We aimed to investigate the effects of budesonide and dexamethasone on renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in AMS prevention.Materials and Methods: Data were obtained from a randomised controlled trial including 138 participants. The participants were randomly assigned to receive budesonide, dexamethasone or placebo as prophylaxis before they travelled to 3450 m altitude from 400 m by car. Their plasma concentrations of renin, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and aldosterone were measured at both altitudes.Results: All parameters were comparable among the three groups at 400 m. After high-altitude exposure of 3450, renin in all groups increased significantly; the ACE, aldosterone concentrations, as well as the aldosterone/renin ratio, rose markedly in the dexamethasone and placebo groups but not in the budesonide group. Moreover, the aldosterone/renin ratio correlated closely with ACE concentration.Conclusions: Upon acute high-altitude exposure, budesonide, but not dexamethasone, blunted the response of aldosterone to renin elevation by suppressing angiotensin converting enzyme.
