Background: Acute and late toxicities in patients treated with (chemo)radiotherapy for head and neck cancer (HNC) is common and can negatively impact quality of life and performance. Performance status instruments measure the functional ability to perform daily life activities and are important tools in the oncologic population. Aims: Since Dutch performance status scales for the HNC population are lacking, we conducted this study to translate the Performance Status Scale for Head and Neck Cancer Patients (PSS‐HN) into Dutch (D‐PSS‐HN) and to validate this version. Methods & Procedures: The D‐PSS‐HN was translated into Dutch according to the internationally described cross‐cultural adaptation process. It was administered to HNC patients and together with the Functional Oral Intake Scale completed by a speech and language pathologist at five different time points during the first 5 weeks of (chemo)radiotherapy. Patients were asked each time to complete the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy and the Swallowing Quality of Life Questionnaire. Pearson correlation coefficients were used to calculate convergent and discriminant validity and the evolution of D‐PSS‐HN scores was assessed by means of linear mixed models. Outcomes & Results: A total of 35 patients were recruited and > 98% of the clinician‐rated scales were completed. Convergent and discriminant validity were demonstrated, with all correlations rs between 0.467 and 0.819, and between 0.132 and 0.256, respectively. The subscales of the D‐PSS‐HN are sensitive to detect changes through time. Conclusion & Implications: The D‐PSS‐HN is a valid and reliable instrument to assess performance status in patients with HNC treated with (chemo)radiotherapy. It is a useful tool to measure HNC patients' current diet level and functional abilities to perform daily life activities. This paper reports finding from a nested qualitative study designed to elicit the views and perceptions of those who participated in a randomised controlled feasibility trial testing a non-pharmacological intervention, Respiratory Distress Symptom Intervention (RDSI), for the management of the breathlessness-cough-fatigue symptom cluster in lung cancer. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 lung cancer patients, three caregivers and seven researchers involved in recruitment, consent, RDSI training and delivery and participant follow-up. Thematic analysis identified key considerations including: the importance of informed consent emphasising commitment to completion of paperwork and raising awareness of potential sensitivities relating to content of questionnaires; ensuring screening for the presence of symptoms reflects the language used by patients; appreciation of the commitment required from participants to learn intervention techniques and embed them as part of everyday life; conduct of interviews with patients who decline to participate; and conduct of serial interviews with those receiving RDSI to further inform its routine implementation into clinical practice. This study will inform the development of a fully powered follow-on trial testing the hypothesis that RDSI plus usual care is superior to usual care alone in the effective management of this symptom cluster in lung cancer. Background: Palliative care schemes, which include pain management, symptom control, psychosocial support and rehabilitation, aim to boost patients' quality of life, ease the burden and anxiety of informal caregivers, and ultimately provide a comprehensive approach to enhance well-being during this challenging and sensitive period. This study aims to evaluate the impact of a comprehensive rehabilitation palliative care program on the quality of life of patients with terminal cancer and their informal caregivers. Methods: This quasi-experimental study, conducted from August 2023 to January 2024 at outpatient clinics affiliated with the Oncology Center at Mansoura University, Egypt, focused on cancer patients and their caregivers in the palliative care department. Employing pre- and post-test phases, data were gathered using a questionnaire, EORTC QLQ C30, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Short Form Health Survey, Caregiver Burden Inventory, and Beck Anxiety Inventory. The investigation evaluated a 16-week rehabilitation program comprising exercise, psychoeducation, individual counselling, and spiritual support. Exercises, led by a physiotherapist, targeted fatigue and stress through tailored aerobic and resistance training. Psychoeducation sessions aimed to bolster coping abilities, covering fatigue management and nutrition. Trained counsellors addressed spiritual and existential concerns. Personal advisory sessions were available for individual support. Caregivers received education on rehabilitation and palliative care protocols, ensuring comprehensive patient care. Results: The mean age for cancer patients was 65.79 ± 13.85. In contrast, the mean age for primary carers was 42.05 ± 11.15. The QOL for cancer patients during the pre-test phase was 77.8 ± 7.16 and rose to 87.34 ± 14.56 during the post-test phase. Additionally, the total anxiety level of patients before the rehabilitation palliative care program was conducted was 15.45 ± 3.05 compared to 6.12 ± 3.21 after the post test phase. Furthermore, the total depression levels of the patients during the pre-test phase were 20.89 ± 9.21. However, after implementing the rehabilitation palliative care program, it decreased to 15.5 ± 6.86. In regards to the total quality of life of informal caregivers, it was measured at 67.28 ± 32.09 before conducting the program. Nevertheless, it increased to 25.95 ± 40.29 after conducting it. Additionally, the total Caregiver Burden Inventory before implementing the program was 37.45 ± 25.7, and it decreased to 29.36 ± 16.4 after conducting it. Additionally, the total score on the Beck Anxiety Inventory decreased from 45.7 ± 4.3 during the initial testing phase to 17.35 ± 23.67. Conclusion: The program for rehabilitation palliative care successfully achieved its goals by enhancing the overall quality of life for cancer patients and their caregivers. Additionally, it reduced the anxiety and depression levels among the patients, as well as the anxiety and caregiver burden among the caregivers. Aims and Objectives: To explore the longitudinal experiences using an application named remote home care for remote palliative care among patients with cancer living at home. Background: Introducing welfare technology in home‐based care for patients with cancer in the palliative phase is internationally suggested as a measure to remotely support palliative care needs. However, little is known about the experiences of patients utilising welfare technology applications to receive home‐based care from healthcare professionals in a community care context. Although living with cancer in the palliative phase often presents rapidly changing ailments, emotions and challenges with patients' needs changing accordingly, no studies exploring the longitudinal experiences of patients were found. Design: A qualitative study with a longitudinal, exploratory design. Methods: Data were collected through individual interviews with 11 patients over 16 weeks. The data were analysed using qualitative content analysis. The COREQ checklist guided the reporting of the study. Results: Three themes were identified: (1) potential to facilitate self‐governance of life‐limiting illness in daily life, (2) need for interpersonal relationships and connections, and (3) experiences of increased responsibility and unclear utility of the Remote Home Care. Conclusion: The results showed that remote home care facilitated patients' daily routines, symptom control and improved illness‐management at home. Interpersonal relationships with healthcare professionals were considered pivotal for satisfactory follow‐up. Infrastructural glitches regarding data access, information sharing and lack of continuous adjustments of the application represented major challenges, with the potential to impose a burden on patients with cancer in the palliative phase. Relevance to Clinical Practice: By exploring the experiences of patients in palliative care over time as the disease progresses, this study provides constructive insights for the design and development of welfare technology applications and optimal care strategies. Background: The European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) has developed the Spiritual Well-being Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-SWB32), a measure of spiritual well-being validated with people receiving palliative care for cancer, although its usefulness is not restricted to that population. We aimed to translate and validate this tool in Finnish and to study the relationship between spiritual well-being (SWB) and quality of life (QOL). Methods: A Finnish translation was produced according to the guidelines of EORTC and included forward- and back-translations. Face, content, construct and convergence/divergence validity and reliability were studied in a prospective manner. QOL was assessed with EORTC QLQ-C30 and 15D questionnaires. Sixteen individuals participated in the pilot testing. 101 cancer patients drawn from oncology units, and 89 patients with other chronic diseases drawn from religious communities in different parts of the country participated in the validation stage. Retest was obtained from 16 individuals (8 cancer and 8 non-cancer patients). Inclusion criteria included patients with either a well-defined palliative care plan, or who would benefit from palliative care, as well as the capacity to understand and communicate in Finnish. Results: The translation appeared understandable and acceptable. Factorial analysis identified four scoring scales with high Cronbach alfa values: Relationship with Self (0.73), Relationship with Others (0.84), Relationship with Something Greater (0.82), Existential (0.81), and, additionally, a scale on Relationship with God (0.85). There was a significant correlation between SWB and QOL in all participants. Conclusions: The Finnish translation of EORTC QLQ-SWB32 is a valid and reliable measure both for research and clinical practice. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the implementation of Value‐Based Healthcare principles for lung cancer patients in a large Belgian hospital. This hospital implemented a digital platform for the collection of patient‐reported outcomes and the standardisation of care pathways. Also, a follow‐up by the multidisciplinary care team was put in place. Methods: Evaluation was done by employing a mixed method approach with data analysis of all included patients (n = 201), a pilot study (n = 30) and semi‐structured interviews with the care team (n = 5). Results: Overall, 95% of all lung cancer patients of two thoracic oncologists agreed to participate in the digital follow‐up during the period January 2018 to September 2020 (201 participating patients). The response rates of those patients were high: 92% of the weekly questionnaires and 90% of the 6‐weekly ICHOM questionnaires were responded. Based on the pilot study, we conclude that questions are clear and the platform is user‐friendly for 90% of patients in the pilot. The interviews revealed that the weekly follow‐up has a positive impact on the patient–provider communication and makes it easier to discuss psychological and palliative care needs. Measuring the quality of life in family caregivers of people in palliative care is essential to document the impact of care on the caregiver. This study aimed to adapt and validate a Latin American‐Spanish version of the QOLLTI‐F scale in family caregivers of palliative care patients. This study was conducted between May and November 2019 in Medellin, Colombia. We develop three phases: translation and semantic adaptation (n = 17), face and content validity (n = 21), construct validity, internal consistency (n = 208) and test–retest reliability (n = 35). Main family caregivers of stage‐IV cancer patients receiving palliative treatment, participated. In the translation and semantic adaptation, some items were adjusted following the caregivers' recommendations. In face validity, Fleiss' Kappa was over 0.65 for family caregivers. In content validity, Fleiss' Kappa ranged from 0.54 to 1 for experts. In construct validity, the original version seven‐factor structure did not show appropriate model fit indices. The data revealed instead a new 3‐factor structure related to (1) impact of care‐giving, (2) social and healthcare interactions and (3) meaning of life. Cronbach's alpha was 0.83 for the overall scale. Test–retest reliability was 0.87 between measurements 1 and 2. This study found that The Latin American‐Spanish version of the QOLLTI‐F scale is an understandable, useful, and relevant tool for family caregivers of people with cancer receiving palliative care. In Jordan, little is known about cancer-related symptoms prevalence, severity, and its impacts on patients’ quality of life. Therefore, this study was conducted to estimate cancer-related symptoms prevalence, severity, and predictors of quality of life of cancer patients in Jordan. A descriptive cross-sectional survey design was used. The sample consisted of 498 Jordanian cancer patients. There were slightly more males (51.6%) and a mean age of 44.3 (SD = 15.3) years. The mean of the number of symptoms reported by patients was 11 (SD = 3.3). The most prevalent symptoms were fatigue (92.5%), feeling drowsy (87.1%), lack of appetite (86.3%), being distressed (86.1%), and pain (85.5%). Furthermore, Jordanian cancer patients had low mean total scores for quality of life at a level of 18.5 (SD = 4.9). A comprehensive palliative care program is recommended, led by a representative from the Ministry of Health, to integrate palliative care within the current health care system in Jordan. Based on the research method grounded theory and semistructured patient interviews at home following hospitalization, the aim was to provide information on issues relating to the identification and alleviation of patients’ physical and emotional problems, understood as continuity in palliative care. The interviews were based on selected problems that patients found significant. The results are distilled into the core category disheartening interactions and four categories: falling outside the professional framework, not being seen as a person, unidentified/unmet need for guidance and involvement, and patient strategy–minimizing conflict. The article discusses a study to evaluate the cross-cultural development of a stand-alone European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) measure of spiritual well being for palliative care patients with cancer. The study found that a provisional 36-item measure ready for Phase IV field-testing, the EORTC QLQ-SWB36 has been developed, with the items are comprehensible across languages and cultures. The need for Phase IV testing is highlighted.

Palliative care patients who live alone report greater psychological distress, and are less likely to die at home than those living with a family carer. However, there is a lack of research on the value of models of care that specifically address this disadvantage. This article describes the experiences of terminally ill 'home alone' people using one of two models of care aimed at maintaining participants' need for independent living, focusing on the effect of these two models of care on their physical, social and emotional needs. Twenty six palliative care patients of Silver Chain Hospice Care, in Western Australia, were randomly assigned to either having a personal alarm or additional care-aide hours in their home. An in-depth qualitative study was conducted in two phases in 2010 using face-to-face interviews. The care-aide model of care resulted in benefits such as easing the burden of everyday living; supporting well-being; enhancing quality of life and preserving a sense of dignity; and reducing loneliness and isolation. The personal alarm model of care imparted a sense of security; provided peace of mind; and helped to deal with feelings of isolation. Participants in both groups felt that they could remain at home longer. By providing a safer, more secure environment through the use of a personal alarm or additional care-aide hours, patients were able to continue their activities of daily living, could build a sense of 'normality' into their lives, and they could live independently through support and dignity.
