The most rapid climate warming is occurring in northern, permafrost environments. Peatlands of these regions are particularly sensitive to climate warming, with the high ground ice content of peat plateaux resulting in the formation of collapse scars as ground temperatures warm.To quantify the rates of permafrost thaw and associated vegetation changes, we sampled the plant and lichen communities in transects spanning actively thawing collapse scar margins at sites from mid‐Boreal to Low Subarctic conditions, within Canada's Northwest Territories. Seventeen transects were sampled in 2007/08 and 14 of these were resampled 10 years later.The rate of lateral permafrost thaw of collapse scar margins ranged from −6 to 63 cm year−1 (mean: 22.0 cm ± 4.7 cm year−1 (SE)); variability was high and no trends with respect to latitude or temperature gradients were detected.Plant communities displayed a clear gradient from lichen‐ and ericaceous shrub‐dominated peat plateaux, to collapse scars primarily characterized by Sphagnum mosses and graminoids. Both space‐for‐time (distance from collapsing margin) and direct measurement of 10‐year changes showed a successional sequence following permafrost thaw; floating mat communities characterized by Sphagnum riparium or S. balticum proceeded to lawn communities of S. angustifolium and, finally, to hummock communities with Mylia anomala or S. fuscum. This successional sequence was associated with increased water table depth and lower soil water content in plant communities farther from the actively collapsing front, illustrating that peat growth above the water table was driving plant community successional changes.The most rapid plant community succession occurred in recently thawed environments as peat growth propelled the ground surface above the water table while the slowest succession occurred in the collapse scar hummock communities located farthest from the actively collapsing peat plateau margin.Synthesis. In just 10 years, significant vegetation change was detected, in association with both permafrost thaw and subsequent plant community succession. These changes occurred across a broad climatic and latitudinal gradient, from mid‐Boreal to Low Subarctic and have implications for wildlife, global C cycle and indigenous communities who depend on this landscape for harvesting, spiritual and cultural practices. The timing (or phase) of this transition, determined by the balance between ecosystem respiration (RECO) and primary production, is key to estimating the amplitude of the terrestrial carbon sink. We diagnose an apparent phase bias in the RECO and net ecosystem exchange (NEE) seasonal cycles estimated by the terrestrial carbon flux (TCF) model framework and investigate its link to soil respiration mechanisms. Satellite observations of vegetation canopy conditions, surface meteorology, and soil moisture from the NASA SMAP Level 4 Soil Moisture product are used to model a daily carbon budget for a global network of eddy covariance flux towers. Proposed modifications to TCF include: the inhibition of foliar respiration in the light (the Kok effect); a seasonally varying litterfall phenology; an O2 diffusion limitation on heterotrophic respiration (RH); and a vertically resolved soil decomposition model. We find that RECO phase bias can result from bias in RECO magnitude and that mechanisms which reduce northern spring RECO, like substrate and O2 diffusion limitations, can mitigate the phase bias. A vertically resolved soil decomposition model mitigates this bias by temporally segmenting and lagging RH. Applying these model enhancements at continuous soil respiration (COSORE) sites verifies their improvement of RECO and NEE skill compared to in situ observations (up to ΔRMSE = −0.76 g C m−2 d−1). Ultimately, these mechanisms can improve prior estimates of NEE for atmospheric inversion studies. Plain Language Summary: In the northern hemisphere, the plants and the soil respond to warming temperatures and increasing day lengths in spring and begin to store more carbon than they release to the atmosphere, on average. The timing of this change is very important for accurately modeling how much carbon is stored or released to the atmosphere. We found that a commonly used model of plants and soil has delayed predictions of the timing of this seasonal cycle of carbon. We studied different potential changes to the model, including changes to: how carbon inputs to the soil from plant roots, dead leaves, and woody debris are added over time; how soil microbes respond to high levels of soil moisture; whether the soil is represented by a single layer or by multiple layers at different depths; and how the release of carbon by plants varies with solar radiation. We found that multiple different changes resulted in similar corrections to the seasonal cycle of carbon so long as they reduced or delayed the amount of carbon released during the spring season. We discuss why that is and how it impacts the model's performance and its importance for other modeling studies. Soil moisture and evapotranspiration (ET) are important components of boreal forest hydrology that affect ecological processes and land‐atmosphere feedbacks. Future trends in soil moisture in particular are uncertain. Therefore, accurate modeling of these dynamics and understanding of concomitant sources of uncertainty are critical. Here, we conduct a global sensitivity analysis, Monte Carlo parameterization, and analysis of parameter uncertainty and its contribution to future soil moisture and ET uncertainty using a physically based ecohydrologic model in multiple boreal forest types. Soil and plant hydraulic parameters and LAI have the largest effects on simulated summer soil moisture at two contrasting sites. In future scenario simulations, the selection of parameters and global climate model (GCM) choice between two GCMs influence projected changes in soil moisture and ET about as much as the projected effects of climate change in the less sensitive GCM with a late‐century, high‐emissions scenario, though the relative effects of parameters, GCM, and climate vary among hydrologic variables and study sites. Saturated volumetric water content and sensitivity of stomatal conductance to vapor pressure deficit have the most statistically significant effects on change in ET and soil moisture, though there is considerable variability between sites and GCMs. The results of this study provide estimates of: (a) parameter importance and statistical significance for soil moisture modeling, (b) parameter values for physically based soil‐vegetation‐atmosphere transfer models in multiple boreal forest types, and (c) the contributions of uncertainty in these parameters to soil moisture and ET uncertainty in future climates. In this study, we conduct experiments with a hydrological model to better understand which parameters most influence soil water content and ET, how much uncertainty these parameters contribute, and how specific parameter values affect whether soils become wetter or drier and by how much. We find that the parameters that control how tightly soils retain water and how much plants close their stomata and hence reduce transpiration in response to dry conditions, have the largest influences. Interactions between parameters are also important. Even when these parameter values are constrained by model performance in comparison with observations, parameter choice can determine whether soils become wetter or drier in future conditions. These findings suggest that modelers should carefully consider how parameter selection influences simulated future hydrologic conditions and highlight specific parameters that are worthy of further attention. Soil moisture is an important driver of growth in boreal Alaska, but estimating soil hydraulic parameters can be challenging in this data‐sparse region. Parameter estimation is further complicated in regions with rapidly warming climate, where there is a need to minimize model error dependence on interannual climate variations. To better identify soil hydraulic parameters and quantify energy and water balance and soil moisture dynamics, we applied the physically based, one‐dimensional ecohydrological Simultaneous Heat and Water (SHAW) model, loosely coupled with the Geophysical Institute of Permafrost Laboratory (GIPL) model, to an upland deciduous forest stand in interior Alaska over a 13‐year period. Using a Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation parameterisation, SHAW reproduced interannual and vertical spatial variability of soil moisture during a five‐year validation period quite well, with root mean squared error (RMSE) of volumetric water content at 0.5 m as low as 0.020 cm3/cm3. Many parameter sets reproduced reasonable soil moisture dynamics, suggesting considerable equifinality. Model performance generally declined in the eight‐year validation period, indicating some overfitting and demonstrating the importance of interannual variability in model evaluation. We compared the performance of parameter sets selected based on traditional performance measures such as the RMSE that minimize error in soil moisture simulation, with one that is designed to minimize the dependence of model error on interannual climate variability using a new diagnostic approach we call CSMP, which stands for Climate Sensitivity of Model Performance. Use of the CSMP approach moderately decreases traditional model performance but may be more suitable for climate change applications, for which it is important that model error is independent from climate variability. These findings illustrate (1) that the SHAW model, coupled with GIPL, can adequately simulate soil moisture dynamics in this boreal deciduous region, (2) the importance of interannual variability in model parameterisation, and (3) a novel objective function for parameter selection to improve applicability in non‐stationary climates. Arctic and boreal ecosystems play an important role in the global carbon (C) budget, and whether they act as a future net C sink or source depends on climate and environmental change. Here, we used complementary in situ measurements, model simulations, and satellite observations to investigate the net carbon dioxide (CO2) seasonal cycle and its climatic and environmental controls across Alaska and northwestern Canada during the anomalously warm winter to spring conditions of 2015 and 2016 (relative to 2010–2014). In the warm spring, we found that photosynthesis was enhanced more than respiration, leading to greater CO2 uptake. However, photosynthetic enhancement from spring warming was partially offset by greater ecosystem respiration during the preceding anomalously warm winter, resulting in nearly neutral effects on the annual net CO2 balance. Eddy covariance CO2 flux measurements showed that air temperature has a primary influence on net CO2 exchange in winter and spring, while soil moisture has a primary control on net CO2 exchange in the fall. The net CO2 exchange was generally more moisture limited in the boreal region than in the Arctic tundra. Our analysis indicates complex seasonal interactions of underlying C cycle processes in response to changing climate and hydrology that may not manifest in changes in net annual CO2 exchange. Therefore, a better understanding of the seasonal response of C cycle processes may provide important insights for predicting future carbon–climate feedbacks and their consequences on atmospheric CO2 dynamics in the northern high latitudes. Obligatory mine reclamation efforts in the Athabasca oil sands region require leased land to be returned to pre-disturbance function. This entails the re-establishment of key ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration and water and nutrient cycling. Surface-atmosphere exchanges of energy, heat and moisture are critical to ecohydrological processes and feedbacks that govern ecosystem functionality. Eddy covariance and remote sensing measurements were used to examine the temporal changes in energy partitioning of a reclaimed fen-upland watershed during the initial seven years post-construction (2013–2019). Surface conditions evolved from bare ground to robustly vegetated plant communities, altering albedo, surface roughness and plant-mediated shading. Initially in the fen, due to near-surface water table, high soil moisture content and the low albedo (0.09) of bare, wet peat, energy was predominantly partitioned to latent heat (Q E) and exhibited a high degree of decoupled surface-atmosphere conditions (surface-atmosphere decoupling factor (Ω) of 0.49). As the fen plant community developed and stabilized, Q E remained the dominant energy flux, but a larger proportion of available energy was partitioned to sensible heat flux (Q H). Plant establishment altered the biophysical surface through sheltering and shading affecting ground heat flux and supressing surface evaporative losses. Moreover, plant-mediated water loss through stomatal controls resulted in an increase in surface-atmosphere coupling (Ω = 0.32), particularly during drier periods. In the drier upland, plant emergence and establishment was slower than in the fen. Initially, bare ground in the upland resulted in higher albedo (0.20–0.25), and Q E and Q H were similar. Once understory and tree species matured, Q E increased with seasonal trends that mirrored plant phenology. Unlike the fen, the upland continually exhibited a higher degree of surface-atmosphere coupling (Ω ranging between 0.23 and 0.3). By year seven (2019) energy fluxes and intra- and inter-seasonal trends at the constructed watershed were comparable to natural and post-disturbance boreal landscapes indicating the system is evolving towards a functional, reclaimed ecosystem. Wildfire is the largest disturbance affecting peatland ecosystems and can typically result in the combustion of 2-3 kg C m−2 of near-surface peat. We hypothesized that organic soil burn severity, as well as the associated carbon emissions, varies significantly as a function of hydrogeological setting due to groundwater impacts on peat bulk density and moisture content. We measured depth of burn (DOB) in three peatlands located along a hydrogeological and topographic gradient in Alberta's Boreal Plains. Peatland margins across all hydrogeological settings burned significantly deeper (0.245 ± 0.018 m) than peatland middles (0.057 ± 0.002 m). Further, hydrogeological setting strongly impacted DOB. A bog with an ephemeral groundwater connection in a coarse-textured glaciofluvial outwash experienced the greatest DOB at its margins (0.514 ± 0.018 m) due to large water table fluctuations, while a low-lying oligotrophic groundwater flow-through bog in a coarse-textured glaciofluvial outwash experienced limited water table fluctuations and had the lowest margin burn severity (0.072 ± 0.002 m). In an expansive peatland in a lacustrine clay plain, DOB at the margins bordering an isolated domed bog portion (0.186 ± 0.003 m, range: 0.0-0.748 m) was considerably greater than the DOB observed at fen margins with a longer groundwater flow path (<0.05 m). Our research indicates that groundwater connectivity can have a dominant control on soil carbon combustion across and within hydrogeological settings. We suggest that hydrogeological setting be used to identify potential deep burning 'hotspots' on the landscape to increase the efficacy of wildfire management and mitigation strategies. Permafrost thaw can alter the soil environment through changes in soil moisture, frequently resulting in soil saturation, a shift to anaerobic decomposition, and changes in the plant community. These changes, along with thawing of previously frozen organic material, can alter the form and magnitude of greenhouse gas production from permafrost ecosystems. We synthesized existing methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) production measurements from anaerobic incubations of boreal and tundra soils from the geographic permafrost region to evaluate large-scale controls of anaerobic CO2 and CH4 production and compare the relative importance of landscape-level factors (e.g., vegetation type and landscape position), soil properties (e.g., pH, depth, and soil type), and soil environmental conditions (e.g., temperature and relative water table position). We found fivefold higher maximum CH4 production per gram soil carbon from organic soils than mineral soils. Maximum CH4 production from soils in the active layer (ground that thaws and refreezes annually) was nearly four times that of permafrost per gram soil carbon, and CH4 production per gram soil carbon was two times greater from sites without permafrost than sites with permafrost. Maximum CH4 and median anaerobic CO2 production decreased with depth, while CO2:CH4 production increased with depth. Maximum CH4 production was highest in soils with herbaceous vegetation and soils that were either consistently or periodically inundated. This synthesis identifies the need to consider biome, landscape position, and vascular/moss vegetation types when modeling CH4 production in permafrost ecosystems and suggests the need for longer-term anaerobic incubations to fully capture CH4 dynamics. Our results demonstrate that as climate warms in arctic and boreal regions, rates of anaerobic CO2 and CH4 production will increase, not only as a result of increased temperature, but also from shifts in vegetation and increased ground saturation that will accompany permafrost thaw. Northern boreal forests often experience forest dieback as a result of metal ore mining and smelting. The common solution is to lime the soil, which increases pH, reducing metal toxicity and encouraging recovery. In certain situations, however, such as in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada, liming has yielded only moderate benefits, with some locations responding well to liming and other locations not at all. In an effort to increase the effectiveness of the ecorestoration strategy, the authors investigated if these differences in liming responsiveness were linked to differences in toxicity. Toxicity of metal-impacted Flin Flon soils on the oribatid mite Oppia nitens and the collembolan Folsomia candida was assessed, with a view toward identifying the metal of concern in the area. The effects of moisture content on metal sorption, uptake, and toxicity to the invertebrates were also investigated. Toxicity tests with the invertebrates were conducted using either Flin Flon soils or artificial soils with moisture content adjusted to 30%, 45%, 60%, or 75% of the maximum water-holding capacity of the soil samples. The Relative to Cd Toxicity Model identified Zn as the metal of concern in the area, and this was confirmed using validation tests with field contaminated soils. Furthermore, increasing the moisture content in soils increased the amount of mobile Zn available for uptake with the ion exchange resin. Survival and reproduction of both invertebrates were reduced under Zn exposure as moisture level increased. Thus, moisture-collecting landforms, which are often also associated with high Zn concentrations at Flin Flon, have, as a result, higher Zn toxicity to the soil ecosystem because of increases in soil moisture. Abstract: C-band Radarsat-2 data were used to develop multi-parameter algorithms to retrieve soil moisture across a chronosequence (recently burned, shrubby regrowth and mature forest) of fire-disturbed Alaskan boreal black spruce forests using polarized backscatter intensity, polarimetric decomposition and discriminator parameters as independent variables. To account for complex interactions of surface roughness, biomass and soil moisture, multiple polarimetric variables were evaluated empirically in algorithm development using a time series dataset that included the wet and dry extreme conditions. Results indicate that polarimetric discriminators, such as maximum degree of polarization, fractional polarization or coefficient of variation, may be instrumental in accounting for the type of scattering occurring or the complexity or heterogeneity of the distributed target. Using the maximum degree of polarization combined with one or more variables on scattered intensity (e.g. C-HV, C-HH, or maximum scattering intensity) improved multi-linear moisture retrieval algorithms by 27–33% over the single, dual and quad polarized backscatter intensity algorithms. For all sites combined, algorithms were developed with low SE (7.0% volumetric soil moisture), moderately high R2 (0.77) and low RMSE (6.7% volumetric soil moisture). However, the best models were produced by separating the recently burned forests (strongest algorithm: R2 0.94, SE 5.9, RMSE 7.4) from the shrubby and mature forests (best algorithm: R2 0.85, SE 4.7, RMSE 7.3). Recent warming at high-latitudes has accelerated permafrost thaw in northern peatlands, and thaw can have profound effects on local hydrology and ecosystem carbon balance. To assess the impact of permafrost thaw on soil organic carbon (OC) dynamics, we measured soil hydrologic and thermal dynamics and soil OC stocks across a collapse-scar bog chronosequence in interior Alaska. We observed dramatic changes in the distribution of soil water associated with thawing of ice-rich frozen peat. The impoundment of warm water in collapse-scar bogs initiated talik formation and the lateral expansion of bogs over time. On average, Permafrost Plateaus stored 137 ± 37 kg C m, whereas OC storage in Young Bogs and Old Bogs averaged 84 ± 13 kg C m. Based on our reconstructions, the accumulation of OC in near-surface bog peat continued for nearly 1,000 years following permafrost thaw, at which point accumulation rates slowed. Rapid decomposition of thawed forest peat reduced deep OC stocks by nearly half during the first 100 years following thaw. Using a simple mass-balance model, we show that accumulation rates at the bog surface were not sufficient to balance deep OC losses, resulting in a net loss of OC from the entire peat column. An uncertainty analysis also revealed that the magnitude and timing of soil OC loss from thawed forest peat depends substantially on variation in OC input rates to bog peat and variation in decay constants for shallow and deep OC stocks. These findings suggest that permafrost thaw and the subsequent release of OC from thawed peat will likely reduce the strength of northern permafrost-affected peatlands as a carbon dioxide sink, and consequently, will likely accelerate rates of atmospheric warming. Abstract: Climate change may cause a decrease in snow cover in northern latitudes. This, on the other hand, may result in more severe soil frost even in areas where it is not common at present, and may lead to increased stress on the tree canopy. We studied the effects of snow removal and consequent changes in soil frost and water content on the physiology of Norway spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) needles and implications on root biomass. The study was conducted at a 47-year-old Norway spruce stand in eastern Finland during the two winters of 2005/06 and 2006/07. The treatments in three replicates were: (i) natural snow accumulation and melting (CTRL), (ii) artificial snow removal during the winter (OPEN), and (iii) the same as OPEN, but the ground was insulated in early spring to delay soil thawing (FROST). In spite of the deeper soil frost in the OPEN than in the CTRL treatment, soil warming in spring occurred at the same time, whereas soil warming in the FROST was delayed by 2 and 1.5 months in 2006 and 2007, respectively. The soil water content was affected by snow manipulations, being at a lower level in the OPEN and FROST than CTRL in spring and early summer. The physiological measurements of the needles (e.g. starch, carbon and nitrogen content and apoplastic electrical resistance) showed differences between soil frost treatments. The differences were mostly seen between the CTRL and FROST, but also in the case of the starch content in early spring 2007 between the CTRL and OPEN. The needle responses in the FROST were more evident after the colder winter of 2006. The physiological changes seemed to be related to the soil temperature and water content in the early growing season rather than to the wintertime soil temperature. No difference was found in the fine root (diameter<2mm) biomass between the treatments assessed in 2007. In the future, conditions similar to the OPEN treatment may be more common than at present in areas experiencing a thick snow cover. The present experiment took place over the course of two years. It is possible that whenever thin snow cover occurs yearly, the reduced starch content during the early spring may be reflected in the tree growth itself as a result of reduced energy reserves. Abstract: Soil water content strongly affects permafrost dynamics by changing the soil thermal properties. However, the movement of liquid water, which plays an important role in the heat transport of temperate soils, has been under-represented in boreal studies. Two different heat transport models with and without convective heat transport were compared to measurements of soil temperatures in four boreal sites with different stand ages and drainage classes. Overall, soil temperatures during the growing season tended to be over-estimated by 2–4°C when movement of liquid water and water vapor was not represented in the model. The role of heat transport in water has broad implications for site responses to warming and suggests reduced vulnerability of permafrost to thaw at drier sites. This result is consistent with field observations of faster thaw in response to warming in wet sites compared to drier sites over the past 30years in Canadian boreal forests. These results highlight that representation of water flow in heat transport models is important to simulate future soil thermal or permafrost dynamics under a changing climate. The article evaluates the use of European Remote Sensing satellite radar imagery in mapping wetlands, both saturated and inundated lands. Using the regional Utikuna River drainage basin as the study area, the analyses of patterns of wetlands indicated that, during dry climatic conditions, wetland sizes were small and disconnected from each other and receiving bodies of water. Findings suggest that analyses of individual wetland maps and integrated wetland probability maps have the potential to inform future scientific studies, such as biogeochemical and ecological, and forest management on the Boreal Plain.

Abstract: The cold climate of Fennoscandia allows soils to experience ephemeral freezing and snow cover. Snowmelt impacts on runoff and solute transport, but is also one of the most important contributors to recharge of ground water reserves. The presence of a snowpack governs the length of a growing season, but limited information is available on the response of partially frozen soil to mild climatic events in winter. We studied time series of soil temperature and unfrozen soil water content during freezing cycles and mild climatic events during two climatically contrasting winters (2001–2002, 2002–2003) at five sites differing in texture and hydraulic features in Finland. Frost penetration was found to be attributable to snowpack thickness, such that soil temperatures seldom fell below −1.5 °C, when a snow cover of more than 30 cm was present. Soil surface temperatures can fall below 0 °C and soil water freezes to 10-cm depth, but soil water is predominantly unfrozen during winter in deeper soil horizons, 30- to 90-cm depths. Water released by snowmelt during mild climatic events in winter was observed to infiltrate through partially frozen soil, hence contributing significant recharge to ground water resources. Effects of three aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) canopy removal treatments and root trenching on understory microenvironment and moisture were tested at Parkland and Boreal sites in Alberta, Canada. Aspen canopies moderated air temperature by reducing maximums and increasing minimums, and increased the frost-free period in the understory by reducing radiative frosts. When daily differences were found among canopy treatments, maximum absolute humidity was greater with complete canopy removal. Maximum daily relative humidity was greater in openings at night than with either full or partial canopy cover. Predictably, increasing aspen cover reduced PAR reaching the understory. Soil moisture response was highly variable, changing with site, aspen density and precipitation patterns, but there were only marginal differences due to root trenching. In the Parkland site, soil moisture conservation from aspen canopy and leaf litter effects were masked by tree uptake in most periods, but a net increase in soil water (+5.2%) was observed during drought. Soil and microclimatic conditions in thinned aspen stands suggest potentially favourable production benefits from developing and adopting agroforestry systems in these northern ecosystems. We conducted a 2-year study in central Alberta to quantify and simulate the soil water status of boreal grasslands under three grazing systems using wapiti ( Cervus elaphus Canadensis), viz. (1) ungrazed control (UNG), (2) high intensity [4.16 animal unit month per ha (AUM) ha−1 ] short-duration grazing (SDG) and (3) moderate intensity (2.08 AUM ha−1) continuous grazing (CG). Soil water was measured from May 1997 to September 1998 to a depth of 15 cm. Total annual precipitation in 1997 and 1998 was 494 and 429 mm respectively. In both years grazing treatments reduced soil water. Soil water content under SDG was significantly (P < 0.05) lower than CG. Simulation of soil water on each grazing system was conducted using PASTURE, a simple compartmental system dynamics model. Evaluation of the model was conducted using statistical criteria that included calculation of average error, root mean square, coefficient of residual mass and modelling efficiency and comparing these statistics against optimal values. Although the model under-predicted soil water, simulations of soil water for grazing treatments in both years were closest to measured values with modelling efficiency (how well observed values are close to simulated values) up to 68 %. Through its effect on vegetation, forest harvesting affects soil moisture storage, water movement processes, and soil temperature. The effects of harvest on water storage and movement patterns and on soil temperature during the snowmelt period were studied 3 years after harvest on hillslopes in northern Alberta, Canada. Measurements of soil water content, soil temperature, and bromide tracer concentrations were made at 11 pairs of forested and harvested plots, which are all dominated by Gray Luvisol soils but possess a range of topographic characteristics. Compared with forested sites, harvested sites were expected to have higher soil water content, display more interflow, and thaw earlier. Harvested sites were wetter on only one of four dates sampled, reflecting dry weather and rapid aspen regrowth. Greater loss and shallower penetration of bromide tracer in plots indicate that harvested sites had more interflow than forested sites. Despite a trend to higher temperatures, harvested sites did not thaw earlier than forested sites. Our inability to detect dramatic treatment effects reflects the need for large sample sizes for soil properties that display high local spatial and temporal variability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
