Background: There are few population‐based studies assessing the prevalence of skin diseases. Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of five chronic skin inflammatory diseases, i.e. atopic dermatitis (AD), psoriasis, alopecia areata (AA), vitiligo and hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) in France, using validated self‐diagnostic questionnaires. Methods: Population‐based study using a representative sample of the French general population aged more than 15 years and sampling with replacement design. All participants were asked (ii) to fill in a specific questionnaire including socio‐demographic characteristics, (ii) to declare if they have been diagnosed with one or more skin problem or skin diseases during their life, and (iii) to fill in five validated self‐reported questionnaires for AD, psoriasis, AA, vitiligo and HS. Results: A total of 20.012 adult participants responded to the questionnaire of whom 9760 were men (48.8%) and 10.252 (51.2%) were women. We identified a prevalence of 4.65% for AD (931 individuals), 4.42% for psoriasis (885 individuals), 1.04% for AA (210 individuals), 0.46% for vitiligo (93 individuals) and 0.15% for HS (29 individuals), respectively. The article presents a case study of a 28-year-old woman who had history of pruritic erythematous scaly dermatitis on both hands and on the neck, after keeping a rabbit as pet. She fed her rabbit with chicory leaves, dandelion, hay, and dry food, and the dermatitis disappeared when the patient stopped feeding her rabbit with chicory.

Researchers active in the field of inflammatory skin diseases from the spectrum of dermatitis and eczema are well aware of a considerable overlap in the clinical pictures and proposed sets of diagnostic criteria for these diseases, which can hardly be overcome through the clinical or epidemiological research. In effect, patients are included in studies based on vague and overlapping criteria, while heterogeneous study populations may, in turn, lead to non-representative outcomes and continued confusion. In this narrative review, a systematics of diseases from the spectrum of dermatitis and eczema is proposed based on the origins of causative factors and the pathomechanisms involved. Difficulties in differentiating between these diseases are discussed, and the extent to which advances in the "omics" sciences might help to overcome them is considered. Of all the "omics" research in this field, more than 90% of the published papers were devoted to atopic dermatitis, with a striking underrepresentation of other diseases from the spectrum of dermatitis and eczema, conditions which collectively exceed the rates of atopic dermatitis by far. A greater "omics" research effort is urgently needed to tackle other dermatitides, like allergic, irritant and protein contact dermatitis, as well as radiation, seborrheic, stasis or autoimmune dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis findings should be validated not only against healthy donors but also other dermatitides. The article evaluates the frequency of contact sensitization in the course of atopic dermatitis (AD) within a sample of Tunisian population. The severity of AD was evaluated by the SCORAD index. The European Standard Series, except primin, was applied to all patients. The European Standard Series was applied to all patients. Patch testing was performed with Finn chambers.

Skin diseases with an allergic background such as atopic dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, and urticaria are very common. Moreover, diseases arising from a dysfunction of immune cells and/or their products often manifest with skin symptoms. This review aims to summarize recently published articles in order to highlight novel research findings, clinical trial results, and current guidelines on disease management. In recent years, an immense progress has been made in understanding the link between skin barrier dysfunction and allergic sensitization initiating the atopic march. In consequence, new strategies for treatment and prevention have been developed. Novel pathogenic insights, for example, into urticaria, angioedema, mastocytosis, led to the development of new therapeutic approaches and their implementation in daily patient care. By understanding distinct pathomechanisms, for example, the role of IL-1, novel entities such as autoinflammatory diseases have been described. Introduction. – Malassezia are lipophilic yeasts, saprophytic on human skin. For the past 20 years, Malassezia were thought to be involved in the pathogenesis of certain forms of head and neck dermatitis (HND). The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of this organism in HND. We also studied possible cross-reactivity with two other yeasts, Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae.Patients and methods. – Fifty-three subjects were included: 25 patients with HND, 10 patients with generalized atopic dermatitis (AD) and 18 healthy controls. The 25 patients with HND had yeast cultures taken for Malassezia, and all 53 subjects had patch tests, skin prick tests and IgE antibody assays for Malassezia, C. albicans and S. cerevisiae. The HND patients were then treated with ciclopiroxolamine, a topical antimycotic.Results. – We found no statistically significant relationship between the results of yeast cultures, skin tests and the serological results or the results of the antimycotic treatment in these subjects. We did find increased sensitivity to Malassezia in patients with AD compared to the healthy controls, but there was no statistical difference between HND patients and patients with generalized AD. Nevertheless, for the entire group of patients, there was a significant relationship between results of skin prick tests and specific antibodies for Malassezia, C. albicans and S. cerevisiae, suggestive of possible cross-reactivity between these three yeasts.Conclusion. – The results lead us to propose two hypotheses: (1) Patients may be sensitized to yeast proteins but have no signs of an allergy requiring antifungal treatment, i.e. HND. (2) Patients with HND might be sensitized to several yeasts, and they would need systemic antifungal treatment that is active on Malassezia and C. albicans and, in addition, a S. cerevisiae-free diet. Purpose: To determine whether photoallergic contact dermatitis is as uncommon as it is usually considered to be and to review the associated clinical features. Methods: We reviewed the literature on photoallergic reactions induced by the topical contact of the skin with a chemical in the presence of, or followed by, exposure to UV or visible light. Some of the more recently observed photo-allergens and those presenting special clinical features are discussed. Results: The literature cites several topical substances that give rise to photoallergic contact dermatitis, some of them only exceptionally but others quite frequently. The clinical features are not always those of a eczematous eruption, and several parts of the body may be affected. Conclusions: Many topical photoallergic culprits have been reported in the literature, the most important of which are sunscreen agents and, recently, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs). Not at all exceptional is the occurrence of photoaggravation and recurrent transient or even persistent light reactions on previously exposed as well as non-exposed areas (often sparing the original application site), particularly with the NSAID ketoprofen. Moreover, cross-reactions with chemically-related as well as non-chemically related molecules are common. The potentially misleading clinical features observed in some cases, the diversity of the casual substances identified, and the low frequency with which photopatch testing is carried out in general indicate that the occurrence of photoallergic contact dermatitis might well be underestimated. Throughout life, it is necessary to adapt to the Earth's environment in order to survive. A typical example of this is that the daily Earth cycle is different from the circadian rhythm in human beings; however, the ability to adapt to the Earth cycle has contributed to the development of human evolution. In addition, humans can consume and digest Earth-derived foods and use luxury materials for nutrition and enrichment of their lives, as an adaptation to the Earth's environment. Recent studies have shown that daily lifestyles are closely related to human health; however, less attention has been paid to the fact that obesity due to excessive energy intake, smoking, and alcohol consumption contributes to the development of inflammatory skin diseases. Gluten or wheat protein, smoking and alcohol, sleep disturbance, and obesity drive the helper T (Th)1/Th2/Th17 immune response, whereas dietary fiber and omega-3 fatty acids negatively regulate inflammatory cytokine production. The article discusses the acute onset of a widespread erythematous pustular eruption that is a drug-induced incident known as acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP). Also presented is a case of a 3-year old girl who suffered from moderate atopic dermatitis and received topical bufexamac twice a day for the treatment of mild eczema of the cheeks.

The article presents a case study of a 68-year old non-atopic man who was referred from Department of Urology due to suspected allergic skin reaction. It states that the patient had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and 2 days later developed severe swelling and redness of scrotal and penile skin. It notes that patch testing was performed using extended European baseline series. It mentions that he was informed about contact allergy to cetrimide.
