BACKGROUND: This study investigates the protective effects of etomidate against oxidative damage in an experimental model of ovarian ischemia-reperfusion injury. METHODS: A total of 24 female rats were randomized into three groups. Group 1 served as the control. Group 2 underwent an ovarian torsion/detorsion procedure. Group 3 underwent similar procedures as Group 2; additionally, 4 mg/kg of etomidate was administered intraperitoneally 30 minutes before ovarian detorsion. Blood samples were analyzed for lipid peroxidation, pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, and antioxidant enzyme activity.Furthermore, histopathological scoring was performed to evaluate tissue damage in the ovaries. RESULTS: Biochemical analysis of blood samples revealed reductions in pro-inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-1 Beta (IL1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p=0.005, p=0.016, and p<0.001, respectively). Additionally, a decrease in malondialdehyde (MDA) levels was observed in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p<0.001). In contrast, activities of antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), were significantly increased in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p=0.031 and p=0.001, respectively). Furthermore, Group 3 demonstrated notable reductions in histopathological scores for follicular degeneration, vascular occlusion, bleeding, and inflammation compared to Group 2 (p<0.001, p<0.001, p<0.001, and p=0.001, respectively). Aim: The research paper presents the characteristic of cytoarchitectonics of the thymus of intact white mature male laboratory rats. Topicality of the study is due to the need to clarify the data on the contribution of each type of thymus cells in the formation of its structure. The aim of the research was to determine the specifics of localization and ultramicroscopic structure of thymus cells in male mature Wistar laboratory rats. Material and Methods: The study was conducted using histological and ultramicroscopic methods on 10 mature male laboratory rats, weighing 130-150 g. Semi-thin (0.5-1 μm) and ultrathin (0.05-0.2 μm) sections were made on a microtome UMTP-4 (Ukraine), which were stained with 1% methylene blue solution with the addition of 1% sodium tetraborate solution. Histological analysis and photographic recording were performed using Olympus light microscope (Japan) and DSM 510 camcorder with magnification in 1000 times. Results: With a detailed study of the semi-thin and ultrathin sections in the thymus lobules the specifics of localization and ultramicroscopic structure of thymus cells were clearly identified. The features of localization and ultramicroscopic structure of epithelial, mesenchymal, vascular and hematopoietic thymus cells were determined from the point of view of their functional loads and interactions. Conclusion: The described structural peculiarities of the components of the thymus and their relative location in different zones reflect significant organ polymorphism, which must be taken into account in order to achieve the required level of objectivity in the result evaluation of simulated biomedical experiments. Background: The aim of this study was to define the morphological and morphometric development of the foetus heart obtained from the domestic cattle in the gestation period of 15-25 weeks.Materials and Methods: For this purpose, a total of 30 hearts belonging to cattle foetuses (15 males, 15 females) were used. The ages of foetuses were calculated according to the forehead-to-tail length and examined in three different groups. After dissection; biometric, macroanatomic, morphometric and histological findings were obtained from the foetal hearts according to the groups. In addition, mean values of the morphometric findings were determined.Results: As a result of the study, it was found that with the advancing age the convexity of margo ventricularis dexter increased and margo ventricularis sinister transformed from a convex-concave shape to a flat shape. The heart-to-body weight ratio was determined as 0.08% for Group II female foetuses and 0.09% for all other groups. The heart heights for Groups I, II, and III females were identified as 26.21, 41.00, and 46.27 mm, respectively, and for the males 26.45, 34.89, and 47.15 mm, respectively. In the statistical analysis, it was determined that all the morphometric values measured from the heart correlated significantly with the forehead-to-tail length.Conclusions: The data obtained as a result of the study is thought to help understand the morphological and morphometrical development of the heart, pioneer the attempts to create a foetal cattle heart model, and thus help in the diagnosis of the foetal heart pathologies.acielecka. BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of natural antioxidants resveratrol and quercetin on oxidative stress and secondary cell damage in rats with acute spinal cord injury. METHODS: In this experimental study, 42 male Sprague-Dawley rats were used. Spinal cord injury was performed with clip compression method at level of T4-5. The study was conducted using 6 groups: control, trauma, trauma and solvent, trauma and resveratrol, trauma and quercetin, and trauma with combined resveratrol and quercetin. All rats were euthanized 48 hours after the procedure. Effects of resveratrol and quercetin on serum and tissue total antioxidant capacity and paraoxanase activity level were examined. RESULTS: Compared to trauma group, there was a significant increase in total antioxidant capacity and paraoxanase activity level in resveratrol, quercetin, and combined treatment groups. There was no significant difference between resveratrol and quercetin groups with regard to total antioxidant capacity and paraoxanase activity level. Total antioxidant capacity and paraoxanase activity level were significantly higher in solvent group than trauma group. In histopathological evaluation, there was a decrease in polymorphonuclear leukocyte infiltration in solvent, resveratrol, quercetin, and combined treatment groups. CONCLUSION: Biochemical and histological staining results of present study showed that resveratrol and quercetin may be effective in preventing secondary damage in spinal cord injury. BACKGROUND: This study was designed to determine possible protective effect of betaine treatment against oxidative injury in pulmonary tissue induced with thermal trauma. METHODS: Under ether anesthesia, shaved dorsum of Wistar albino rats was exposed to a 90°C water bath for 10 seconds to induce burn injury. Betaine was administered orally (250 mg/kg) for a period of 21 days before burn injury, and single dose of betaine was administered after thermal injury. Control group rats were exposed to 25°C water bath for 10 seconds. Upon conclusion of experiment, rats were decapitated and blood was collected for analysis of pro-inflammatory cytokines and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity. Lung tissue samples were taken to determine malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) levels, myeloperoxidase (MPO), and Na+K+-ATPase activity, in addition to histological analysis. RESULTS: Burn injury caused significant increase in both cytokine levels and LDH activity. In lung samples, raised MDA levels, MPO activity, and reduced GSH levels and Na+/K+-ATPase activity were found due to burn injury. CONCLUSION: Treatment of rats with betaine significantly restored GSH level and Na+K+-ATPase activity, and decreased MDA level and MPO activity. According to the findings of the present study, betaine significantly diminishes burn-induced damage in tissue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
