This study focuses on the feasibility of the dry anaerobic digestion of solid agricultural biomass for efficient renewable-energy production and nutrient recycling. Methane production and the amount of nitrogen in the digestates were measured in pilot- and farm-scale leach-bed reactors. In the pilot scale, with a digestion time of 133 days, the methane production of a mixture of whole crop fava bean and horse manure corresponded to 94% and 116%, respectively, of the methane potentials of the solid substrates. The mono-digestion of fava beans resulted in relatively low methane production (production/potential ratios of 59% and 57%). In two full-scale experiments, the methane production of mixtures of clover-grass silage, chicken manure, and horse manure corresponded to 108% and 100% of their respective methane potentials with digestion times of 117 and 185 days. In co-digestion, the production/potential ratios were similar in the pilot and farm experiments. High nitrogen loss was observed in the farm scale when the digestate was stored in a stack covered with a tarpaulin during summertime. Nutrients can be circulated back to agriculture from waste streams through anaerobic digestion and digestate processing. Digestate processing, however, is making slow progress as circulated nutrient products have not been cost competitive compared to fossil fertilizers and not designed from the farmer's perspective to truly match with the regional nutrient need. In this study, the aim is to assess apply mathematical optimization to the design of a cost-optimal processing route for a biogas plant's digestate to produce fertilizer products based on specified regional needs. Another aim is to analyze whether such a cost-optimal solution can fully exploit the nutrient recycling potential, that is, the efficiency of such a solution in returning nutrients to agriculture. The results indicate that mathematical optimization allows the design of a cost-optimal digestate production routes based on the region's nutrient need and characteristics. The true cost optimum was found for a design combining three processing technologies and producing four nutrient products, which when mixed, would fulfil farmer's fertilization needs. However, there seems to be a conflict between an optimal economic design and a full exploitation of recycling potential as only 25% of the digestate's phosphorus was utilized within the case region. This is because only 29% of the digestate mass was used and processed as fertilizer, as the concentration of required nutrients was deemed too low for economic use. This study uses a new approach for the recycling of plant nutrients by co-digesting sewage sludge with fly ash from a wood combustion. Sewage sludge and fly ash both are enriched with nutrients of the wastewater resp. wood, which makes these products an enhanced source for recycled fertilizers. The effects of the ash addition to the anaerobic digestion are studied in several lab scale experiments including effects on the gas production and microbial activity. Following that, the fertilizing qualities of the digestate are evaluated by plant growth experiments. The results show that the fertilizing qualities of the digested sludge were improved by the ash addition. Next to this, gas production results show that the methane production was not affected by the ash addition, while the total gas release was reduced. The sulphur addition by the ash stimulated sulphate reducing bacteria. The sulphate reducing bacteria did not markedly inhibit the methanogens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microalgae can produce biofuels, nutriceuticals, pigments and many other products, but commercialization has been limited by the cost of growing, harvesting and processing algal biomass. Nutrients, chiefly nitrogen and phosphorus, are a key cost for growing microalgae, but these nutrients are present in abundance in municipal wastewater where they pose environmental problems if not removed. This is not a traditional review article; rather, it is a fact-based set of suggestions that will have to be investigated by scientists and engineers. It is suggested that if microalgae were grown as biofilms rather than as planktonic cells, and if internal illumination rather than external illumination were employed, then the use of microalgae may provide useful improvements to the wastewater treatment process. The use of microalgae to remove nutrients from wastewater has been demonstrated, but has not yet been widely implemented due to cost, and because microalgae derived from wastewater treatment has not yet been demonstrated as a commercial source for value-added products. Future facilities are likely to be called Municipal Resource Recovery Facilities as wastewater will increasingly be viewed as a resource for water, biofuels, fertilizer, monitoring public health and value-added products. Carbon emissions and associated global warming have become a threat to the world, the major contributor being the extensive use of fossil fuels and uncontrolled generation of solid wastes. Energy generation from renewable energy sources is considered an alternative to achieving carbon neutrality. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a sustainable technology that has been endorsed as a low-carbon technology complimenting both waste management and renewable energy sectors. The AD technology recovers the volatile matter from waste biomass as much as possible to produce biogas, thus reducing carbon emission as compared to open dumping or burning. However, there is a need of compilation of information on how each subsystem in AD contributes to the overall carbon neutrality of the entire system and chances of achieving a circular economy along with it. Therefore, this article aims to clarify the associated internal and external factors that determine the low carbon characteristic of anaerobic digestion technology. From this review, the potential of AD system for energy-atmosphere-agriculture nexus has been explored. Carbon emission mapping of the potential entities involved in AD were identified and perspective to life cycle assessment and future research direction has been pointed out. Climate change impact and acidification potential are the two entities that can influence the overall environmental sustainability of an AD system. It was recognized that each stage of AD system starting from substrate supply chain, biogas production, upgradation, utilization, and digestate application had a remarkable effect on the overall carbon emission potential based on its design, operation, and maintenance. Selection of suitable substrates and co-digesting them together for improved biogas production rate with high methane content and proper digestate post-processing and storage can vastly reduce the carbon emission potential of the AD technology. Further, a case scenario of India was assessed considering the utilization of major surplus biomass available through AD. Re-routing the three major substrates such as agricultural crop residues, animal wastes and organic fraction of municipal solid wastes through AD can reduce at least 3.5–3.8 kg CO 2-eq per capita of annual carbon emission load in India. This study aims to evaluate the full-scale performance of vibrating membrane filtration (VSEP) technology in resource recovery from the liquid fraction of digestates, while reducing macronutrient concentrations down to dischargeable water. Although increasing attention is paid to mass flow assessment of macronutrients, to date little is known about the fate of micronutrients and heavy metals upon digestate processing. In this research, process streams were characterized and mass balances for micronutrients and heavy metals were performed throughout a complete digestate processing train. The VSEP system operated with reversed osmosis membranes and followed by a lagoon was capable of producing dischargeable water according to Flemish regulatory standards. Concentrates produced by one VSEP filtration of the liquid fraction of digestate and dried thick fractions resulting from solid-liquid separation were rich in macro- and micronutrients, while heavy metal concentrations did not exceed regulatory standards. Abstract To provide sufficient quantities of food and feed, farming systems have to overcome limiting factors such as the nutrient depletion of arable soils. Nitrogen being the main mineral element required for plant growth, has led to the extensive use of chemical fertilizers causing nitrogen pollution of the ecosystems. This field study investigates the use of biogas residues (BRs) as biofertilizers and their contribution to the mitigation of nitrate leaching in agricultural soils, while also demonstrating the polluting nature of chemical fertilizers. Nine different fertilization treatments classified in three schemes and two nitrogen doses were tested for three consecutive years on a grassland in the Walloon Region of Belgium. Residual soil mineral nitrogen, percentage contribution of treatments in residual nitrate and agronomic performance were assessed for each fertilization treatment. The results obtained showed significant differences on treatment and scheme level regarding nitrate accumulation in the soil, with chemical fertilizers posing the highest nitrate leaching risk. BRs did not cause nitrate accumulation in the soil, and were N rate and rainfall independent, while the chemical treatments indicated a cumulative tendency under high N rate and low precipitation. Forage yield did not demonstrate statistical differences on treatment and scheme level but varied with changing precipitation, while the maximum application rate suggested a plateau. Aboveground nitrogen content was significantly higher after the application of chemical fertilizers only in the first year, while all the chemical treatments indicated a dilution effect under elevated annual rainfall. Finally, the partial substitution of chemical fertilizers by raw digestate reduced the concentration of NO 3 − in the soil without having a negative impact on the yield and N content of the biomass. These results strongly advocate for the environmental benefits of BRs over chemical fertilizers and underline their suitability as biofertilizers and substitutes for chemical fertilizers in similar agricultural systems. Abstract There is a recognized need for mineralizing aquaculture-derived sludge in aquaponics systems in order to reduce waste production. Many recent studies of aquacultural waste treatment have focused only the production of biogas as opposed to the potential for mineralization of nutrient-rich sludge. Upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors provide one possible solution for breaking down sludge into bioavailable nutrients that can subsequently be delivered to plants. As such, this study examines the mineralization performance of sequential UASB reactors that are designed with an expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) and compared to standard aerobic and anaerobic batch reactors. Results of our experiments demonstrate that only chemical oxygen demand reduction is significantly different. An unexpected drop in pH of one of the three reactor systems revealed that a pH below 6 was able to significantly increase the mineralization and mobilization of nutrients. Approximately 25% of phosphorus, potassium, and calcium could also be recovered from the sludge under lower pH conditions, as compared to the mineralization performance of standard UASB reactors running at a higher pH. However, the opposite effect was observed with respect to organic sludge reduction, where diminished performance was observed in the low-pH reactor. The current study implies that anaerobic reactors operating at low pH can potentially contribute towards improved nutrient recovery in multi-loop aquaponics systems and reduction of additive agents for pH control of the hydroponic subsystem. Managing organic waste streams is a major challenge for the agricultural industry. Anaerobic digestion (AD) of organic wastes is a preferred option in the waste management hierarchy, as this process can generate renewable energy, reduce emissions from waste storage, and produce fertiliser material. However, Nitrate Vulnerable Zone legislation and seasonal restrictions can limit the use of digestate on agricultural land. In this paper we demonstrate the potential of cultivating microalgae on digestate as a feedstock, either directly after dilution, or indirectly from effluent remaining after biofertiliser extraction. Resultant microalgal biomass can then be used to produce livestock feed, biofuel or for higher value bio-products. The approach could mitigate for possible regional excesses, and substitute conventional high-impact products with bio-resources, enhancing sustainability within a circular economy. Recycling nutrients from digestate with algal technology is at an early stage. We present and discuss challenges and opportunities associated with developing this new technology. Anaerobic digestion is an established technology to produce renewable energy as methane-rich biogas for which microalgae are a suitable substrate. Besides biogas production, anaerobic digestion of microalgae generates an effluent rich in nutrients, so-called digestate, that can be used as a growth medium for microalgal cultures, with the potential for a closed nutrient loop and sustainable bioenergy facility. In this study, the methane potential and nutrient mobilization of the microalga Scenedemus dimorphus was evaluated under continuous conditions. The suitability of using the digestate as culture medium was also evaluated. The results show that S. dimorphus is a suitable substrate for anaerobic digestion with an average methane yield of 199 mL g −1 VS. The low level of phosphorus in digestate did not limit algae growth when used as culture medium. This paper aims to develop a generic roadmap for setting up strategies for nutrient recovery from digested waste (digestate). First, a guideline-based decision-tree is presented for setting up an optimal bio-based fertilization strategy as function of local agronomic and regulatory criteria. Next, guidelines and evaluation criteria are provided to determine the feasibility of bio-based fertilizer production as function of the input digestate characteristics. Finally, a conceptual decision making algorithm is developed aiming at the configuration and optimization of nutrient recovery treatment trains. Important input digestate characteristics to measure, and essential factors for monitoring and control are identified. As such, this paper provides a useful decision-support guide for wastewater and residuals processing utilities aiming to implement nutrient recovery strategies. This, in turn, may stimulate and hasten the global transition from wastewater treatment plants to water resource recovery facilities. On top of that, the proposed roadmap may help adjusting the choice of nutrient recovery strategies to local fertilizer markets, thereby speeding up the transition from a fossil-reserve based to a bio-based circular nutrient economy. Anaerobic digestion of food waste within urban areas can generate decentralised renewable energy and support community enterprise activities, thereby contributing to closing the waste-energy-food loop. However, widespread uptake of small-scale, urban anaerobic digestion networks is limited by economic costs and the safe disposal of surplus digestate. This paper uses an interdisciplinary approach to assess the feasibility of anaerobic digestate management through the installation of hydroponics or algae cultivation systems, based on a case study of a micro anaerobic digestion system in London, England. Results show that installing a dewatering sifter together with a hydroponics system is a technically and economically feasible option for digestate enhancement in the urban environment. Its installation is, however, not currently justified for the system under consideration due to cost, regulatory, spatial, and contextual constraints identified using actor-network analysis. Nevertheless, if regulatory and wider contextual issues are accommodated, and more than 30 L of digestate are produced daily, a dewatering and vertical hydroponic system could result in a profit of approximately £100,000 over 10 years. While the microalgal system was also able to upgrade digestate, at present productivity is too low and the capital cost of photobioreactor technology is prohibitively expensive. This underlines the need for technical improvements and low-cost enhancement options to achieve justifiable paybacks until regulatory reforms and the wider economic situation are more favourable to anaerobic digestion treatment within cities. Following changes over recent years in fertilizer legislative framework throughout Europe, phosphorus (P) is taking over the role of being the limiting factor in fertilizer application rate of animal manure. This results in less placement area for spreading animal manure. As a consequence, more expensive and energy demanding synthetic fertilizers are required to meet crop nutrient requirements despite existing manure surpluses. Anaerobic digestion followed by mechanical separation of raw digestate, results in liquid fraction (LF) of digestate, a product poor in P but rich in nitrogen (N) and potassium (K). A 3-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate the impact of using the LF of digestate as a (partial) substitute for synthetic N fertilizer. Two different fertilization strategies, the LF of digestate in combination with respectively animal manure and digestate, were compared to the conventional fertilization regime of raw animal manure with synthetic fertilizers. Results from the 3-year trial indicate that the LF of digestate may substitute synthetic N fertilizers without crop yield losses. Through fertilizer use efficiency assessment it was observed that under-fertilization of soils with a high P status could reduce P availability and consequently the potential for P leaching. Under conditions of lower K application, more sodium was taken up by the crop. In arid regions, this effect might reduce the potential risk of salt accumulation that is associated with organic fertilizer application. Finally, economic and ecological benefits were found to be higher when LF of digestate was used as a synthetic N substitute. A transition to renewable energy sources and a circular economy has increased interest in renewable resources not usually considered as energy sources or plant nutrient resources. Horse manure exemplifies this, as it is sometimes recycled but not often used for energy purposes. The purpose of this study was to explore horse manure management in a Swedish municipality and prospects for energy recovery. The case study includes a survey of horse manure practices, environmental assessment of horse manure treatment in a biogas plant, including associated transport, compared to on-site unmanaged composting, and finally a simplified economic analysis. It was found that horse manure management was characterized by indoor collection of manure most of the year and storage on concrete slabs or in containers, followed by direct application on arable land. Softwood was predominantly used as bedding, and bedding accounted for a relatively small proportion (13%) of the total mix. Anaerobic digestion was indicated to reduce potential environmental impact in comparison to unmanaged composting, mainly due to biogas substituting use of fossil fuels. The relative environmental impact from transport of manure from horse facilities to anaerobic digestion plant was small. Results also indicate a relatively high cost for horse keepers to change from composting on site to anaerobic digestion in a centralized plant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The polychaete Hediste diversicolor is known to recycle side streams from aquaculture and biogas production. We conducted a feeding experiment to evaluate whether rearing temperature or mixtures of these two side streams enhances biomass production and fatty acid composition. We reared H. diversicolor along a 5-temperature gradient ranging from 5.8 °C to 17.1 °C and a 4-step gradient form 100% aquaculture sludge to 100% solid biogas digestate. Formulated fish feed served as a control diet. Polychaetes increased growth rate with increasing temperature, ranging from 0.01 at 5.8 °C to 0.14 at 17.1 °C, while survival was inversely affected by temperature with 100% survival at 5.8 °C and 70% survival at 17.1 °C. Diet had a less pronounced effect on polychaete survival, and no significant effect on growth rates. Contrasting to growth, the fatty acid composition of the polychaetes was not affected by temperature but was highly influenced by diet, as polychaetes did not cluster by rearing temperature but by the diets they received. In conclusion, H. diversicolor can be utilized as a recycler of aquaculture and biogas side streams, and production temperature can be optimized for growth without compromising fatty acid composition and quality of the polychaetes. • We cultivated polychaetes along a temperature and food quality gradientby mixing aquaculture sludge and biogas digestate • Temperature had a significant effect on growth and survival of the polychaetes but not on fatty acid profiles • Diet had a pronounced effect on fatty acid composition of the polychaetes, but not on their growth and survival • We found an absence of homeoviscous adaptation in H. diversicolor • Cultivation temperature can be optimized for polychaete growth rates without compromising their nutritional value. Nutrient recycling is essential to make microalgae cultivation sustainable at industrial scale. To this aim, lab-scale anaerobic digestion experiments of Chlorella vulgaris after lipid extraction were carried out to evaluate biogas yield and nutrients recovery in the liquid digestate. Then, this liquid fraction was used as source of nutrients for cultivation of a closely related C. vulgaris species, in order to assess the possibility of re-cultivating microalgae towards a closed-loop nutrient recycling process. The biological methane potential tests resulted in biogas production of about 347 NmL gVS −1 with 43% v/v methane content. In re-growth experiments, the liquid digestate showed an insufficient amount of soluble sulfate and phosphorus. However, by amending these two nutrients, the specific growth rate and final biomass concentration increased to about 2 d −1 and 2 g L −1 , respectively, which were comparable to those obtained in a defined control medium. The low content of soluble phosphorus in liquid digestate was mainly due to precipitation and removal with the solid phase. Several techniques were hence tested to enhance phosphorus solubilisation, and highest recoveries of up to 41% were obtained when using NaHCO 3 . Finally, C. vulgaris was grown in such treated digestate, obtaining a final biomass production comparable to that of the control, without the need of external phosphorus supply. Keeping horses causes environmental impacts through the whole chain from feed production to manure. According to national statistics, the number of horses in Sweden is currently 360,000 and is continuing to increase. This result in increasing amounts of horse manure that has to be managed and treated, which is currently done using practices that cause local, regional, and global environmental impacts. However, horse manure and its content of nutrients and organic material could be a useful fertiliser for arable land and a substrate for renewable energy production as biogas. The aim of the paper is to identify and describe potentially critical factors in horse keeping determining the amount (total mass) and characteristics (nutrient content and biodegradability) of horse manure, and thus the potential for anaerobic digestion. A systematic combining approach is used as a structural framework for reviewed relevant literature. All factors identified are expressed as discrete choices available to the horse keeper. In all, 12 different factors were identified: type and amount of feed, type and amount of bedding, mucking out regime, residence time outdoors, storage type and residence time of manure in storage, spreading and soil conditions, and transport distance and type of vehicle fuel used. Managing horses in terms of these factors is of vital importance in reducing the direct environmental impacts from horse keeping and in making horse manure attractive as a substrate for anaerobic digestion. The results are also relevant to environmental systems analysis, where numerical calculations are employed and different biogas system set-ups are compared to current and other treatments. In such assessments, the relevance and importance of the critical factors identified here and corresponding conditions can be examined and the most promising system set-up can be devised. Anaerobic digestate is a by-product from the biogas production which can be applied as replacement for mineral fertilizers. But digestate has both phytostimulating and phytotoxic effects on plants. Fertilizers toxicity and phytotoxicity should be measured to preserve the environment. The phytotoxicity of digestate from anaerobic digestion of swine manure was evaluated using several official protocols. Germination toxicity was tested on Pisum sativum L. and Lepidium sativum L., roots elongation on Hordeum vulgare L. and shoots elongation on Lactuca sativa L. To determine digestate growth toxicity, pot experiments were performed on two Solanum lycopersicum L. cvs. Digestate dilutions ranging from 5 to 30 % were tested in the different assays. Standard protocols were applied to non-standard species: Cichorium endivia L. (shoots elongation) and two Capsicum annuum L. cvs (pot trials). Digestate concentrations stimulating germination and early life stages were between 2 and 3 %. Pot trials suggested that during more advanced growth stages, digestate can be applied at 20-30 %. The main finding was that to minimize digestate phytotoxicity, direct contact with germinating seeds or young plants should be avoided. During plants late growth, digestate administration might be increased carefully to minimize salinity and ammonia excess. Soil samples from the pot trials were analysed at the starting, mid- and final experimental stages. Conclusion was that digestate utilization may have also a soil liming effect, increasing electric conductivity, pH and contrasting soil acidification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hydrothermal Liquefaction (HTL) for algal biomass conversion is a promising technology capable of producing high yields of biocrude as well as partitioning even higher quantity of nutrients in the aqueous phase. To assess the feasibility of utilizing the aqueous phase, HTL of Nannochloropsis sp. was carried out in the temperature range of 275 to 350 °C and Residence Times (RT) ranging between 5 and 60 min The effect of reaction conditions on the NO 3 − , PO 4 3 − , SO 4 2 − , Cl − , Na + , and K + ions as well as Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and pH was investigated with view of recycling the aqueous phase for either cultivation or energy generation via Anaerobic Digestion (AD), quantified via Lifecycle Assessment (LCA). It addition to substantial nutrient partitioning at short RT, an increase in alkalinity to almost pH 10 and decrease in COD at longer RT was observed. The LCA investigation found reaction conditions of 275 °C/30 min and 350 °C/10 min to be most suitable for nutrient and energy recovery but both processing routes offer environmental benefit at all reaction conditions, however recycling for cultivation has marginally better environmental credentials compared to AD. Anaerobic digestion was indicated to reduce potential environmental impact in comparison to unmanaged composting, mainly due to biogas substituting use of fossil fuels. The relative environmental impact from transport of manure from horse facilities to anaerobic digestion plant was small. Results also indicate a relatively high cost for horse keepers to change from composting on site to anaerobic digestion in a centralized plant.

The production of vegetables relies on the use of mineral fertilizers which are based either on fossil fuel (e.g., nitrogen fertilizers based on Haber–Bosch process) or on fossil ore deposits (phosphate rock). On the other hand, nutrient recovery processes generate various end and side products that can provide a sustainable alternative for fossil-based mineral fertilizers. Their use however, is currently limited by insufficient knowledge about the properties and the impact of these products on soil quality and crop yield. This research was aimed to evaluate the use of the liquid fraction of digestate, effluent from constructed wetlands originating from a manure/digestate treatment facility, air scrubber water and struvite in the cultivation of lettuce ( Lactuca sativa L.) compared to their conventional fossil-based counterparts. In accordance with the crop nutrient requirements, different fertilization treatments were set up in which individual products and combinations were tested. At harvest time, assessment of soil physicochemical properties was conducted, along with crop quality control. Nutrient balances were determined and an economic and environmental assessment was evaluated. There were no significant differences in crop yield and soil quality at harvest time between conventional fossil-based mineral fertilizers and selected bio-based mineral alternatives. Nitrogen and potassium use efficiencies were slightly lower in treatments with bio-based fertilizers. Moreover, economic and ecological assessment have shown higher benefits for the farmer when bio-based alternatives were used as a replacement for synthetic fertilizers. This article presents mass balances and a detailed life cycle assessment ( LCA) for energy and greenhouse gases ( GHGs) of a simulated microalgae biodiesel production system. Key parameters of the system include biomass productivity of 16 and 25 g m−2 day−1 and lipid content of algae of 40% and 25% for low and normal nitrogen conditions respectively. Based on an oil extraction efficiency from wet biomass of 73.6% and methane yields from anaerobically digested lipid-extracted biomass of 0.31 to 0.34 l per gram of volatile solids, the mass balance shows that recycling growth media and recovering nutrients from residual biomass through anaerobic digestion can reduce the total demand for nitrogen by 66% and phosphorus by 90%. Freshwater requirements can be reduced by 89% by recirculating growth media, and carbon requirements reduced by 40% by recycling CO2 from biogas combustion, for normal nitrogen conditions. A variety of technology options for each step of the production process and allocation methods for coproducts used outside the production system are evaluated using LCA. Extensive sensitivity and scenario analysis is also performed to provide better understanding of uncertainty associated with results. The best performing scenario consists of normal nitrogen cultivation conditions, bioflocculation and dissolved air flotation for harvesting, centrifugation for dewatering, wet extraction with hexane, transesterification for biodiesel production, and anaerobic digestion of biomass residual, which generates biogas used in a combined heat and power unit for energy recovery. This combination of technologies and operating conditions results in life cycle energy requirements and GHG emissions of 1.02 MJ and 71 g CO2-equivalent per MJ of biodiesel, with cultivation and oil extraction dominating energy use and emissions. Thus, even under optimistic conditions, the near-term performance of this biofuel pathway does not achieve the significant reductions in life cycle GHG emissions hoped for from second-generation biofuel feedstocks. Abstract: Several ongoing projects are harvesting maritime biomass from the Baltic Sea for eutrophication mitigation and utilisation of the recovered biomass. Some of this biomass comprises common reed (Phragmites australis), one of the most widespread vascular plants on Earth. Reed utilisation from eutrophied coastal areas needs to be evaluated. Therefore, a system analysis was performed of reed harvesting for biofuel and biofertiliser production. The specific objectives of the analysis were to: investigate the methane yield associated with anaerobic co-digestion of reed; make a primary energy assessment of the system; quantify Greenhouse Gas (GHG) savings when a fossil reference system is replaced; and estimate the nutrient recycling potential of the system. The results from energy and GHG calculations are highly dependent on conditions such as system boundaries, system design, allocation methods and selected indicators. Therefore a pilot project taking place in Kalmar County, Sweden, was used as a case study system. Laboratory experiments using continuously stirred tank reactor digesters indicated an increased methane yield of about 220 m3 CH4/t volatile solids from co-digestion of reed. The energy balance for the case study system was positive, with energy requirements amounting to about 40% of the energy content in the biomethane produced and with the non-renewable energy input comprising about 50% of the total energy requirements of the system. The net energy value proved to be equivalent to about 40 L of petrol/t reed wet weight. The potential to save GHG emissions compared with a fossil reference system was considerable (about 80%). Furthermore an estimated 60% of the nitrogen and almost all the phosphorus in the biomass could be re-circulated to arable land as biofertiliser. Considering the combined benefits from all factors investigated in this study, harvesting of common reed from coastal zones has the potential to be beneficial, assuming an appropriate system design, and is worthy of further investigations regarding other sustainability aspects. Abstract: In this study, an upper limit in the solar energy conversion efficiency which can be translated to a maximum potential algal yield of a large-scale culture is calculated based on the algal productivity model in which light and nutrient are made the growth rate limiting factors, and taking the design characteristics of the cultivation system into account. Our results indicate that for the production of low-cost biodiesel within the limits of the wastewater quality standards, that the culturing of high lipid content algae within a raceway pond would provide an appropriate solution for manufacturing biodiesel from algae. However, due to inefficient sunlight utilization and due to the large amount of fertilizer required in raceway ponds, a greater effluent recycle rate would have to be implemented to reduce the amount of fertilizer discharge to meet the wastewater quality standards and to maximize the attainable productivity of algal biomass. Abstract: High biomass productivity and efficient harvesting are currently recognized challenges in microbial biofuel applications. To produce naturally settleable biomass, combined growth of native microalgae and bacteria was facilitated in laboratory sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) using primary treated wastewater from the Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant (CWTP) in New Zealand. SBRs were operated under a simulated, local, summer climate (i.e., 925 μmol/m2/s of photosynthetically active radiation for 14.7 h per day at 21 °C mean water temperature) using 1.4- to 8-day hydraulic retention times (HRTs) to optimize growth. Solids retention times (SRTs) were varied from 4 to 40 days by discharging different ratios of supernatant and completely mixed culture. Biomass productivity up to 31 g/m2/day of solids was obtained, and it generally increased as retention times decreased. Biomass settleability was typically 70–95%, and the microbes aggregated into compact flocs as cultures aged up to four months. Due to a low lipid content of 10.5%, anaerobic digestion appeared to be the most appropriate biofuel conversion process with potential to generate 19,200 m3/ha/yr of methane based on settleable mixture productivity. In the transition from a fossil to a bio-based economy, it has become an important challenge to maximally recuperate and recycle valuable nutrients coming from manure and digestate processing. Membrane filtration is a suitable technology to separate valuable nutrients in easily transportable concentrates which could potentially be re-used as green fertilizers, in the meantime producing high quality water. However, traditional membrane filtration systems often suffer technical problems in waste stream treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of vibratory shear enhanced processing (VSEP) in the removal of macronutrients (N, P, K, Na, Ca, Mg) from the liquid fraction of digestates, reducing their concentrations down to dischargeable/re-usable water. In addition, the re-use potential of VSEP-concentrates as sustainable substitutes for fossil-based mineral fertilizers was evaluated. Removal efficiencies for N and P by two VSEP filtration steps were high, though not sufficient to continuously reach the Flemish legislation criteria for discharge into surface waters (15 mg N l and 2 mg P l). Additional purification can occur in a subsequent lagoon, yet further optimization of the VSEP filtration system is advised. Furthermore, concentrates produced by one membrane filtration step showed potential as N-K fertilizer with an economic value of €6.3 ± 1.1 t fresh weight (FW). Abstract: The life cycle impacts were assessed for an integrated microalgal biodiesel production system that facilitates energy- and nutrient- recovery through anaerobic digestion, and utilizes glycerol generated within the facility for additional heterotrophic biodiesel production. Results show that when external fossil energy inputs are lowered through process integration, the energy demand, global warming potential (GWP), and process water demand decrease significantly and become less sensitive to algal lipid content. When substitution allocation is used to assign additional credit for avoidance of fossil energy use (through utilization of recycled nutrients and biogas), GWP and water demand can, in fact, increase with increase in lipid content. Relative to stand-alone algal biofuel facilities, energy demand can be lowered by 3–14GJper ton of biodiesel through process integration. GWP of biodiesel from the integrated system can be lowered by up to 71% compared to petroleum fuel. Evaporative water loss was the primary water demand driver. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: One of the common tendencies of animal production activities in Europe and in developed countries in general is to intensify the animal production and to increase the size of the animal production units. High livestock density is always accompanied by production of a surplus of animal manure, representing a considerable pollution threat for the environment in these areas. Avoiding over-fertilization is not only important for environmental protection reasons but also for economical reasons. Intensive animal production areas need therefore suitable manure management, aiming to export and to redistribute the excess of nutrients from manure and to optimize their recycling. Anaerobic digestion of animal manure and slurries offers several benefits by improving their fertilizer qualities, reducing odors and pathogens and producing a renewable fuel – the biogas. The EU policies concerning renewable energy systems (RES) have set forward a fixed goal of supplying 20% of the European energy demands from RES by year 2020. A major part of the renewable energy will originate from European farming and forestry. Life Cycle Assessment was applied to municipal planning in a study of waste water systems in Bergsjön, a Göteborg suburb, and Hamburgsund, a coastal village. Existing waste water treatment consists of mechanical, biological and chemical treatment. The heat in the waste water from Bergsjön is recovered for the district heating system. One alternative studied encompassed pretreatment, anaerobic digestion or drying of the solid fraction and treatment of the liquid fraction in sand filter beds. In another alternative, urine, faeces and grey water would separately be conducted out of the buildings. The urine would be used as fertilizer, whereas faeces would be digested or dried, before used in agriculture. The grey water would be treated in filter beds. Changes in the waste water system would affect surrounding technical systems (drinking water production, district heating and fertilizer production). This was approached through system enlargement. For Hamburgsund, both alternatives showed lower environmental impact than the existing system, and the urine separation system the lowest. Bergsjön results were more difficult to interpret. Energy consumption was lowest for the existing system, whereas air emissions were lower for the alternatives. Water emissions increased for some parameters and decreased for others. Phosphorous recovery was high for all three alternatives, whereas there was virtually no nitrogen recovery until urine separation was introduced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
