Con el objetivo de evaluar los efectos de los sistemas de cultivo-arboles- pastos sobre el rendimiento de maíz y frijol, y la calidad de suelo, en la micro cuenca Tecomapa, fueron establecidas cinco parcelas experimentales: quema tradicional (Q); sistema agroforestal Quesungual (SAQ); bosque secundario (Bs); potreros mejorados con Brachiaria sp - Marandú, (Pm); y sistema silvopastoril (SSP). En las cuales, dos sub parcelas localizadas en la parte alta y baja del relieve fueron establecidas para evaluar calidad de suelo y la erosión laminar, en 2011, 2012 y 2013. Como resultado, la tasa de erosión fuera de la parcela, únicamente ocurrió en el sistema de quema (Q) con 28.3 t ha-1 a-1. La tasa de erosión dentro de la parcela fue moderada 31.98 y 42.97 t ha-1 a-1, en los sistemas BS y Pm, y alta 62.97 y 121.79 t ha-1 a-1, en los sistemas SAQ y SSP. La calidad de los suelos fue infl uenciada por los contenidos de materia orgánica en el suelo (MOS) mayores a 4000 kg ha-1 en los sistemas SAQ, SSP y Bs. Este indicador fue correlacionado negativamente con el incremento de arcilla en el horizonte superfi cial de los suelos con pastura. Finalmente, los indicadores de calidad de suelo asociados al rendimiento del cultivo de maíz y frijol fueron el espesor orgánico de suelo, las tasas de infi ltraciones rápidas, y la erosión de suelos

The integration of multipurpose legumes into low-input tropical agricultural systems is needed because they are a nitrogen (N) input through symbiotic fixation. The drought-tolerant cover legume canavalia (Canavalia brasiliensis) has been introduced for use either as forage or as a green manure into the crop-livestock system of the Nicaraguan hillsides. To evaluate its impact on the subsequent maize crop, an in-depth study on N dynamics in the soil-plant system was conducted. Microplots were installed in a 6-year old field experiment with maize-canavalia rotation. Direct and indirect 15N-labelling techniques were used to determine N uptake by maize from canavalia residues and canavalia-fed cows' manure compared to mineral fertilizer. Litter bags were used to determine the N release from canavalia residues. The incorporation of N from the amendment into different soil N pools (total N, mineral N, microbial biomass) was followed during the maize cropping season. Maize took up an average of 13.3g N m−2, within which 1.0g N m−2 was from canavalia residues and 2.6g N m−2 was from mineral fertilizer, corresponding to an amendment N recovery of 12% and 32%, respectively. Recoveries in maize would probably be higher at a site with lower soil available N content. Most of the amendment N remained in the soil. Mineral N and microbial N were composed mainly of N derived from the soil. Combined total 15N recovery in maize and soil at harvest was highest for the canavalia residue treatment with 98% recovery, followed by the mineral fertilizer treatment with 83% recovery. Despite similar initial enrichment of soil microbial and mineral N pools, the indirect labelling technique failed to assess the N fertilizer value of mineral and organic amendments due to a high N mineralization from the soil organic matter

Canavalia brasiliensis (canavalia), a drought tolerant legume, was introduced into the smallholder traditional crop-livestock production system of the Nicaraguan hillsides as green manure to improve soil fertility or as forage during the dry season for improving milk production. Since nitrogen (N) is considered the most limiting nutrient for agricultural production in the target area, the objective of this study was to quantify the soil surface N budgets at plot level in farmers fields over two cropping years for the traditional maize/bean rotation and the alternative maize/canavalia rotation. Mineral fertilizer N, seed N and symbiotically fixed N were summed up as N input to the system. Symbiotic N2 fixation was assessed using the 15N natural abundance method. Nitrogen output was quantified as N export via harvested products. Canavalia derived in average 69% of its N from the atmosphere. The amount of N fixed per hectare varied highly according to the biomass production, which ranged from 0 to 5,700kgha−1. When used as green manure, canavalia increased the N balance of the maize/canavalia rotation but had no effect on the N uptake of the following maize crop. When used as forage, it bears the risk of a soil N depletion up to 41kgNha−1 unless N would be recycled to the plot by animal manure. Without N mineral fertilizer application, the N budget remains negative even if canavalia was used as green manure. Therefore, the replenishment of soil N stocks by using canavalia may need a few years, during which the application of mineral N fertilizer needs to be maintained to sustain agricultural production
