Indacaterol, a β2 agonist prescribed for long-term management of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma. In this study the first MISPE cartridges was developed using indacaterol as a template for its selective extraction from rat lung tissues, enabling precise pharmacokinetic evaluation at the drug's site of action. A molecular imprinting polymer was synthesized using indacaterol as a template, methacrylic acid as a functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a cross-linker with a molar ratio (1: 4: 20). The polymer was characterized by a high binding capacity of 9840 ± 0.86 and high selectivity with an imprinting factor of 4.53 ± 0.12. The synthesized polymer was utilized as a sorbent in solid-phase extraction to purify and extract indacaterol from lung tissue matrix. The optimum molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction (MISPE) conditions were 20.0 mg of molecular imprinting polymer and non-imprinting polymer, acetonitrile as the loading solvent, acetonitrile: water (20: 80; by volume) as the washing solvent, and methanol: acetic acid (90: 10; by volume) as the eluting solvent. A pharmacokinetic study was performed for indacaterol in rat lungs using the synthesized and optimized MISPE cartridge as a tool for sample purification. These parameters were determined in the lung tissues of rats emphasizing the local exposure of indacaterol to its target organ. The Cmax and Tmax were 51.020 ± 2.810 µg mL− 1 and 0.083 ± 0.001 h, respectively. The AUC 0−24 and AUC0 − inf were 175.920 ± 1.053 and 542.000 ± 5.245 µg h mL− 1, respectively. The elimination rate constant was 0.014 ± 0.00012 h− 1 and the half-life time was 48.510 ± 0.012 h. This study successfully developed and optimized MISPE cartridges using indacaterol as a template, enabling precise pharmacokinetic evaluation in rat lung tissues. Background: Wastewater can contain a complex mixture of organic micropollutants, with both chemical analysis and effect-based methods needed to identify relevant micropollutants and detect mixture effects. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is commonly used to enrich micropollutants prior to analysis. While the recovery and stability of individual micropollutants by SPE has been well studied, few studies have optimized SPE for effect-based methods. The aim of the current study was to develop and evaluate two standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the enrichment of micropollutants in preparation for chemical analysis and bioanalysis, one covering a broad range of chemicals and the other selective for estrogenic chemicals. Results: Pristine surface water spiked with > 600 micropollutants was used to develop a generic extraction method for micropollutants with a wide range of physiochemical properties, while water spiked with estrogenic chemicals was used to identify a selective extraction method. Three different SPE sorbents were tested, with recoveries of individual chemicals and effect in assays indicative of mutagenicity, estrogenic activity, and fish embryo toxicity assessed. The sorbent HRX at pH 7 was selected for the generic extraction method as it showed the best recovery of both individual chemicals and effect in the bioassays. The sorbent HLB at pH 3 showed optimal recovery of estrogenic chemicals and estrogenic activity. The two optimal SPE methods were applied to spiked and unspiked wastewater effluents, with the concentrations of detected chemicals and observed effects similar to those of previous studies. The long-term storage of both extracts and SPE cartridges for estrogens and estrogenic activity after extraction with the HRX and HLB methods were evaluated, with estrogenic effectiveness close to 100% after 112 days when HLB was used. Conclusions: HRX is recommended for generic extraction, while HLB is optimal for the selective extraction of estrogenic micropollutants. However, if a laboratory only wants to use a single SPE sorbent, HLB can be used for both generic and selective extraction as it yielded similar chemical and effect recovery as HRX for a wide range of micropollutants. A simple, fast, and low-cost pre-concentration methodology based on the application of solid-phase extraction coupled to layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and capillary electrophoresis was developed for the determination of naproxen (NPX), diclofenac (DFC), and ibuprofen (IBP) in environmental sample waters. A systematic study of the LDH composition was designed, including the effects of interlayer anions (NO3−, Cl−, CO32−, BenO−, and SDS−) and the effect of molar ratio (Mg:Al). The optimal composition of MgAl/Cl−-LDH (Mg:Al; 1.5:1.0) was coupled to an SPE system: pH (neutral pH), LDH amount (15 mg), and extraction capacity ranged from 79.71 to 83.11% for the three anti-inflammatory non-steroidal agents analyzed. A recovery rate of up to 80.87% was obtained when 0.01 M chloride acid in methanol was used as the eluent and 50 mL of sample was used. Under optimal conditions, the linear range of the calibration curve ranges from 18.02 to 200 μg L−1, with limits of detection ranging from 6.03 to 18.02 μg L−1 for the three NSAIDs. The precision of the methodology was evaluated in terms of inter- and intra-day repeatability, with %RSD < 10% in all cases. The proposed method was applied to analyze environmental water samples (bottle, tap, cistern, well, and river water samples). The global rise of new psychoactive substances (NPSs) poses challenges for their analysis in biological matrices due to their complex chemistries and short market lifespan. A comparative study for the simultaneous extraction, separation, and detection of 19 NPSs was conducted. Six solid-phase extraction (SPE) methods and one supported liquid extraction method (SLE) were compared for the extraction of analytes from blood, serum, plasma, and urine. Comparisons of four derivatization agents were conducted, at four temperatures and two incubation times. Extraction methods were assessed by precision, sensitivity, and extraction efficiency. Derivatizing agents were assessed on their selectivity and sensitivity, and a three-way ANOVA was conducted to determine statistical significance. CSDAU SPE cartridges were shown to be the most efficient when extracting analytes from blood, serum, and plasma, whereas Xcel I cartridges performed the strongest when extracting analytes from urine. SPE extraction efficiencies, when utilizing the best-performing cartridges, ranged from 49 to 119%. SLE successfully extracted all analytes from all matrices (ranging from 22 to 120%). Pentafluoropropionic anhydride: ethyl acetate was the most successful derivatizing agent, allowing all analytes to be detected, with the highest peak area responses and more unique spectra. In this study, amino-modified micro-mesoporous silica (NH2-MMS) with hierarchical pores was prepared by modifying micro-mesoporous silica ZSM-5 with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and used as an adsorbent in solid-phase extraction to analyze free fatty acids (FFAs) in krill oil during storage for an initial time. The Brunner Emmet Teller adsorption experiment and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrate that NH2-MMS, with a hierarchical pore structure, was successfully synthesized. The adsorption experiments, especially static adsorption, indicate that the absorption ability of the prepared NH2-MMS, with a hierarchical pore structure, toward FFAs was better than that of traditional amino-modified mesoporous silica (SBA-15) with a mesoporous structure at all temperature and concentrations. Fairly low limits of detection (0.06–0.15 μg g−1), acceptable recoveries (85.16–94.31%), and precision (0.08–5.26%) were attained under ideal circumstances. Moreover, NH2-MMS has the advantages of easy preparation and being environmentally friendly. A novel doxorubicin hydrochloride liposome injection was prepared to reduce toxicity and side effects, as well as extend plasma half-life in the treatment of breast cancer. In this study, a rapid and sensitive bioanalytical method was developed and validated to characterize the pharmacokinetic profile of total and free doxorubicin in plasma of 3 Chinese patients after intravenous infusion of this injection. Plasma samples were prepared by protein precipitation for the determination of total doxorubicin, while solid phase extraction was used to determine free doxorubicin. After plasma sample pre-treatment, total and free concentrations were quantified individually using a validated LC-MS/MS method. The calibration curves were found to be linear in the range of 0.20–500.0 ng mL−1 for total doxorubicin and in the range of 1.00–1,000 ng mL−1 for free doxorubicin. The free concentrations in plasma were only one sixth to one quarter of the total levels. Liposomal doxorubicin had a longer apparent half-life (>50 h) than the non-targeted drug (<10 h) reported in the reference. and a lower volume of distribution. This novel injectable formulation steadily released free doxorubicin from liposomes over a long period of time to reduce cardiac toxicity and side effects, while ensuring a clinical curative effect. This work focuses on the development of a hybrid material based on SBA-15 silica with a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP), using spiramycin (SPI) as a template, for use as sorbent in solid-phase extraction (SPE). Characterization techniques such as nitrogen gas adsorption–desorption isotherms, infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the structure and properties of the SBA-15@MIP-SPI material. SPE conditions using SBA-15@MIP-SPI as sorbent were optimized, which allowed us to demonstrate the high selectivity and adsorption capacity of SPI on the synthesized material. The best conditions were 50 mg of sorbent, loading with 1 mL of standard solution or sample of cow milk previously extracted in acetonitrile and eluting with 3 mL of methanol with 1% acetic acid. After the optimization process, the material demonstrated recovery percentages of 81 ± 3% in SPI standard solutions and showed its potential in cow milk samples (71 ± 6%). The novelty of the research consists of the combination of MIPs with SBA-15, which could offer important advantages in terms of specific surface area and porous structure, thus improving performance and reducing the amount of sorbent compared to other traditional methods. To determine the paclitaxel-related substances in a paclitaxel injection (albumin-bound), it is necessary to remove human blood albumin from the sample via solid-phase extraction and subsequently perform high-performance liquid chromatography analysis. The pre-processing operation is complicated, the duration of analysis is long, and much human power and material resources are needed in the sample testing process. Thus, the purpose of this study was to develop a quick two-dimensional liquid chromatography method that requires less consumables and possesses high sensitivity. Samples were directly injected into one-dimensional solid-phase extraction columns to remove human blood albumin. Paclitaxel and its related substances in the solid-phase extraction columns were then eluted into two-dimensional analytical columns through valve switching technology. The sample pretreatment step can be omitted in this method, which allows for the analysis of paclitaxel and its related substances to be completed more quickly, within only 15 min, under the developed two-dimensional elution conditions. The established method had good linearity (R2 = 0.9994), limit of detection (0.25 μg·mL−1), limit of quantification (0.5 μg·mL−1), precision (RSD = 0.5%), and accuracy (102.53–107.97%). Phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidyl ethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylserine (PS), and phosphatidylinositol (PI) are the four major phospholipids in Antarctic krill. In this study, the composition of these phospholipids was analyzed by hydrophilic interaction ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HILIC-UPLC-MS/MS) after purification by solid-phase extraction (SPE) using titania-coated fibrous silica (TiO2/KCC-1) nanoparticles, which had been prepared in our laboratory. The results showed that under the optimal conditions, 291 phospholipids including 75 PCs, 120 PEs, 54 PIs and 42 PSs were detected, which were nearly twice as many as those detected by a previously reported method. Phospholipids containing monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acid chains accounted for 54.73% and 26.17% of the total phospholipids, respectively. PC (40:6) (41.63%), PE (36:0) (39.77%), PI (38:3) (80.05%), and PS (36:1) (81.62%) were found to be the most abundant in the four phospholipids. Multivariate statistical analysis showed significant differences in the types of phospholipids before and after SPE treatment. TiO2/KCC-1 nanoparticles exhibited a significant enrichment capacity for phospholipids, especially PC (18:0/18:0), PE (16:0/18:1), and PI (16:0/18:2). The detection limit was 0.05 μg/g for PC, PE and PS, and 0.01 μg/g for PI. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) for the four major phospholipids were in the range of 0.89% to 5.05%, and the recoveries were 87%–112%. This method demonstrated high specificity, extraction efficiency, sensitivity, precision and accuracy. Therefore, it has broad application prospects for the extraction, purification, and analysis of phospholipids in biological samples.

In this work, we test metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as sorbents in the solid-phase extraction (SPE) technique to determine chemical warfare agents (CWAs) and their related compounds in water samples. During this study, we used 13 target compounds to test the selectivity of MOFs thoroughly. Three MOFs were used: MIL-100(Fe), ZIF-8(Zn), and UiO-66(Zr). The obtained materials were characterized using FT-IR/ATR, SEM, and XRD. CWA's and related compounds were analyzed using gas chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). The effect of the type of elution solvent and the amount of sorbent (MOFs) in the column on the efficiency of the conducted extraction were verified. The LOD ranged from 0.04 to 7.54 ng mL−1, and the linearity range for the analytes tested extended from 0.11/22.62 (depending on the compound) to 1000 ng mL−1. It was found that MOFs showed the most excellent selectivity to compounds having aromatic rings in their structure or a "spread" spatial structure. The best recoveries were obtained for DPAA, CAP, and malathion. Environmental water samples collected from the Baltic Sea were analyzed using an optimized procedure to verify the developed method's usefulness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The analysis of vitamins in baby food is a challenging task given the complexity of the food matrix, vitamin stability, and strict regulations of the European Union regarding permissible deviations from declared values. Vitamins in food exist in different concentrations and forms and have different stabilities; thus, the preparation of samples for a reliable analysis using the same procedure is not straightforward. Therefore, significant attention has been devoted to optimizing sample preparation in the analysis of vitamins. Methods: This study aims to determine which of the sample preparation and extraction methods is the most efficient for the simultaneous determination of vitamins A, D, E, and K in milk and baby food using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Different samples of baby food were prepared in seven different ways based on four methods (saponification, enzymatic hydrolysis, solvent extraction, and solid-phase extraction). Results and Conclusions: According to the validation parameters, the optimal preparation method proved to be solid-phase extraction with a C18 stationary phase, with recoveries of 97.4%, 96.1%, 98.3%, and 96.2% for vitamins A, D, E, and K, respectively, and HPLC with a UV–Vis detector was identified as a sufficiently sensitive technique for the identification and quantification of fat-soluble vitamins in milk and baby food. N-Acyl-homoserine lactones (AHL) play a major role in the communication of Gram-negative bacteria. They influence processes such as biofilm formation, swarming motility, and bioluminescence in the aquatic environment. A comprehensive analytical method was developed to elucidate the "chemical communication" in pure bacterial cultures as well as in the aquatic environment and engineered environments with biofilms. Due to the high diversity of AHLs and their low concentrations in water, a sensitive and selective LC-ESI-MS/MS method combined with solid-phase extraction was developed for 34 AHLs, optimized and validated to quantify AHLs in bacterial conditioned medium, river water, and treated wastewater. Furthermore, the developed method was optimized in terms of enrichment volume, internal standards, limits of detection, and limits of quantification in several matrices. An unanticipated variety of AHLs was detected in the culture media of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (in total 8 AHLs), Phaeobacter gallaeciensis (in total 6 AHLs), and Methylobacterium mesophilicum (in total 15 AHLs), which to our knowledge have not been described for these bacterial cultures so far. Furthermore, AHLs were detected in river water (in total 5 AHLs) and treated wastewater (in total 3 AHLs). Stanozolol, a synthetic derivative of testosterone, is one of the common doping drugs among athletes and bodybuilders. It is metabolized to a large extent and metabolites are detected in urine for a longer duration than the parent compound. In this study, a novel dummy molecularly imprinted polymer (DMIP) is developed as a sorbent for solid-phase extraction of stanozolol metabolites from spiked human urine samples. The optimized DMIP is composed of stanozolol as the dummy template, methacrylic acid as the functional monomer, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linker in a ratio of 1:10:80. The extracted analytes were quantitively determined using a newly developed and validated ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method, where the limits of detection and quantitation were 0.91 and 1.81 ng mL−1, respectively, fulfilling the minimum required performance limit decided on by the World Anti-Doping Agency. The mean percentage extraction recoveries for 3'-hydroxystanozolol, 4β-hydroxystanozolol, and 16β-hydroxystanozolol are 97.80% ± 13.80, 83.16% ± 7.50, and 69.98% ± 2.02, respectively. As such, the developed DMISPE can serve as an efficient cost-effective tool for doping and regulatory agencies for simultaneous clean-up of the stanozolol metabolites prior to their quantification. Total oil and grease (TOG) in water is measured in industrial process waters to determine the concentration of petroleum products present. A common application for TOG measurement is to detect a hydrocarbon leak in circulated cooling water systems. A hydrocarbon leak from a heat exchanger has a negative effect on the stable operation of upgrading and refinery units. Detecting and quantifying a hydrocarbon leak is straightforward; however, identifying the source of the leak can be very time consuming and require a lot of trial and error. In this study, a solvent‐free TOG method using ClearShot extractors and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was developed and optimized for the quantification of bitumen derived hydrocarbon analytes in water. This was further expanded upon to develop a rapid method for hydrocarbon identification in the cooling water by combining chemical fingerprinting with a discriminant analysis classification model. Following the optimized solvent‐free TOG method, chemical fingerprints for six different hydrocarbon classes in water were analyzed by FTIR. The classification model for these hydrocarbon classes was constructed using a discriminant analysis algorithm with a 100% classification rate at a TOG mass loading greater than 150 μg. The optimized solvent‐free TOG method decreases exposure risk and ergonomic strain for technologists, improving overall safety and environmental performance. The hydrocarbon fingerprinting enables rapid prediction of a leak source which reduces the time and analysis required to isolate a leak as well as reducing the cost and environmental impact associated with blowdown and purge (disposal and treatment) of contaminated water. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the global oceans is an important long‐term carbon sink. Connections between molecular size, reactivity, and isotopic characteristics show that DOC exists on a continuum from biologically reactive to recalcitrant. The driving mechanisms behind the creation and persistence of recalcitrant DOC remain unknown. We show mean recalcitrant DOC (isolated via solid‐phase extraction; SPE‐DOC) δ13C values are 1.3 ± 0.6‰ lower than mean total DOC δ13C between depth ranges 0–200 m and 2–4 km on three GO‐SHIP Repeat Hydrography cruises. Lowest observed δ13C values correlate with low ∆14C and proximity to deep ocean hydrothermal systems. These data support the hypothesis that reworking of DOC through the microbial carbon pump is a key driver of the ocean's long‐term carbon sink. Mass‐balance modeling shows deep‐ocean DOC not captured by SPE is enriched in 13C, highlighting the need for continued research on non‐retained DOC to predict mechanisms that drive ocean carbon storage. The work presented here shows that this phenomenon, previously recognized on regional scales, may be systematic across the global oceans, indicated by our measurements in the Pacific, Indian, and Southern Oceans. Mixed-mode high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is increasingly used for the analysis of ionic and highly hydrophilic drugs, which are difficult to separate by conventional single-mode HPLC. In the former case, chromatographic separation is achieved using one of the several commercially available mixed-mode stationary phases, typically combinations of reversed and ion-exchange phases. Moreover, mixed-mode stationary phases can be used as solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbents. This review focuses on the recent applications of mixed-mode stationary phases in the chromatographic analysis of bioactive compounds, such as drugs, herbicides, and pesticides. Specifically, we briefly summarize HPLC methods utilizing mixed-mode stationary phases and SPE pretreatment procedures utilizing mixed-mode sorbents developed in the last decade, thus providing a reference work for overcoming the difficulties in analyzing ionized or hydrophilic drugs by conventional reversed-phase chromatography. In the past few decades, considerable scientific strides have been made in the subject of drug analysis in human biological samples. However, the risk caused by incorrect drug plasma levels in patients still remains an important concern. This review paper attempts to investigate the advances made over the last ten years in common sample preparation techniques (SPT) for biological samples based on solid sorbents, including solid-phase extraction (SPE) and solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME), and in particular in the field of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), including non-stimuli-responsive and stimuli-responsive adsorbents. This class of materials is known as 'smart adsorbents', exhibiting tailored responses to various stimuli such as magnetic fields, pH, temperature, and light. Details are provided on how these advanced SPT are changing the landscape of modern drug analysis in their coupling with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analytical techniques, a general term that includes high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), as well as any variation of MS, such as tandem (MS/MS), multiple-stage (MSn), and high-resolution (HRMS) mass spectrometry. Some notes are also provided on coupling with less-performing techniques, such as high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet (HPLC-UV) and diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) detection. This work showcases a novel application of biochar for analytical sample treatment. The carbonaceous material, obtained by pyrolysis of orange peel waste (550°C) without any post-synthesis treatment or functionalization, was thoroughly characterized and easily immobilized on the inner wall of sampling tubes in order to perform a sort of “in-vial” solid-phase extraction (SPE). The as-obtained device was tested for the extraction of seven sexual steroids, as probe water pollutants, from tap, lake, river water and wastewater treatment plant effluent samples spiked with 0.2-5 µg L−1 of each compound. The sorption kinetics profiles showed quantitative uptake from the sample (25 mL) in 20 min contact time, followed by complete elution in pure ethanol (2 mL, 15 min), thanks to the proper balance between sorption affinity and ease of elution. Under the selected conditions, recovery was in the range 60-123 %, with good inter-day precision (RSD 10-18 %, n=3). As evidence of the excellent reproducibility, an overall RSD below 15 % was observed from inter-day inter-batch recovery tests on three individually prepared sampling tubes. The procedure, carried out on a roller mixer, allows 10 samples to be extracted simultaneously, improving the sample throughput. Moreover, reusability tests showed that the same device maintains its efficiency for 10 consecutive sorption/desorption cycles. The greenness assessment, carried out by two dedicated software, further supported the sustainability of this biochar-based sample preparation as an alternative SPE.

Rapid analysis of multiple food allergens is required to confirm the appropriateness of food allergen labelling in processed foods. This study aimed to develop a rapid and reliable method to simultaneously detect trace amounts of seven food allergenic proteins (wheat, buckwheat, milk, egg, crustacean, peanut, and walnut) in processed foods using LC-MS/MS. Suspension-trapping (S-Trap) columns and on-line automated solid-phase extraction were used to improve the complex and time-consuming pretreatment process previously required for allergen analysis using LC-MS/MS. The developed method enabled the simultaneous detection of selected marker peptides for specific proteins derived from seven food ingredients in five types of incurred samples amended with trace amounts of allergenic proteins. ObjectiveTo develop a fully automated method combining solid-phase extraction with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry for the determination of 52 types of antibiotics in drinking water. MethodsThe water samples were adjusted to pH 2 using phosphoric acid. The antibiotics in the water samples were enriched and purified through solid-phase extraction membrane. Subsequently, the samples underwent two elutions with 10 mL of 5% ammonia methanol, followed by nitrogen-assisted drying to near-dryness. Finally, the volume was adjusted to 1 mL using a 5% methanol aqueous solution for analysis purposes. Separation was achieved using an ACQUITY UPLC BEH C18 chromatographic column (2.1×100 mm, 1.7 μm). A mobile phase consisting of a gradient elution system comprising of 0.1% formic acid-water-0.1% formic acid methanol was employed for this purpose. Mass spectrometry utilized positive ion scan multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. ResultsWithin the range of 0.1 – 100 μg/L, all regression equations obtained for the 52 target analytes exhibited satisfactory linear relationships. The method detection limit ranged from 0.1 to 0.6 ng/L, while the recovery rate varied between 65.1% and 133.3%. Additionally, the relative standard deviation (RSD) ranged from 3.1% to 20.5%. ConclusionThe established method is a simple, rapid, and highly accurate and precise approach for the simultaneous detection of 52 types of antibiotics in drinking water.

A method for simultaneous determination of 176 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in drinking water samples was established by combining solid-phase extraction (SPE) with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The water samples were adjusted to pH 7, and then subjected to enrichment and purification using a Cleanert PEP SPE column. After concentration of the eluate with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), the chromatographic separation was carried out on an HSS T3 column (2.1 mm × 150 mm, 1.8 μm) using methanol-0.1% formic acid water (containing 0.2 mmol ammonium acetate) as the mobile phase. The detection was performed in positive and negative ionization switching modes with multiple reaction monitoring (MRM). Methodological validation results showed that good linearity for the 176 PPCPs was achieved in the concentration range of 5–200 ng/mL, with a correlation coefficient higher than 0.99. The limit of quantitation (LOQ) of the method for all the PPCPs was 0.1 ng/mL. The average recoveries of spiked blank samples at three levels (0.1, 0.4 and 1.0 ng/mL) were between 68.0% and 126.7%, with relative standard deviation (RSD) between 1.1% and 10.3% (n = 6). In conclusion, the method established in this study is simple, rapid, reproducible, and highly sensitive, and can meet the requirements of the high-throughput detection of the 176 PPCPs in drinking water sources.

Food analysis plays an important role in preserving the integrity and quality of food. Despite these noble goals, most official methods for the analysis of nutrients (vitamins, carotenoids, etc.) antioxidants (polyphenols, etc.), and contaminants (pesticides, veterinary drugs, mycotoxins etc.) still rely on time-consuming, complex, and polluting procedures of sample preparation. To solve this discrepancy, the scientific community has frantically been working to make extraction procedures faster and safer, resorting to miniaturization, automation, low-energy consumption, and solvents/sorbents from renewable resources. This review provides an overview of the most sustainable extraction methods in food analysis, developed over the last ten years (2014–2024), including relevant examples of both liquid phase and sorbent-based techniques. Particular emphasis is placed on solutions aimed at improving the method sustainability such as smart devices, neoteric solvents, and composite sorbents, discussing the latest advancements and future trends in this sector.

Solid-phase analytical derivatization is a versatile sample preparation technique that enhances analysis accuracy, efficiency, reproducibility, and sensitivity. The technique combines the advantages of analytical derivatization and solid-phase extraction, providing a versatile approach for analysing analytes with various functional groups in complex matrices. Analytical derivatization is a technique used for functional group analysis that involves modifying the structure of an analyte to enhance sensitivity and specificity. Solid-phase analytical derivatization is a one-pot procedure that combines analytical derivatization and extraction. In the presence of acids, it can derivatize phenols, carboxylic acids, and other analytes. Furthermore, solid-phase analytical derivatization increases the reaction rate of carbonyl compounds, making it easier to extract aldehydes and ketones rapidly. This technique utilises electrophoresis, chromophores, fluorophores, and functional groups for detection and extraction. It initially began as a batch procedure but has now developed into an automated, microextraction, and derivatization method. Solid-phase analytical derivatization is highly efficient due to the significant excess of the derivatizing reagent relative to the analyte, along with the pre-impregnation of derivatizing reagents, which can speed up the process compared to traditional solution-based derivatization. This tutorial aims to provide detailed insights into the practical aspects of implementing solid-phase analytical derivatization in analytical method development and discuss the prospects and future trends.

The sample preparation step is pivotal in glycoproteomic analysis. An effective approach in glycoprotein sample preparation involves enriching glycopeptides by solid-phase extraction (SPE) using polar stationary phases in hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC) mode. The aim of this work is to show how different experimental conditions influence the enrichment efficiency of glycopeptides from human immunoglobulin G (IgG) on an aminopropyl-modified SPE column. Different compositions of the elution solvent (acetonitrile, methanol, and isopropanol), along with varying concentrations of elution solvent acidifiers (formic and acetic acid), and different concentrations of acetonitrile for the conditioning and washing solvents (65%, 75%, and 85% acetonitrile) were tested to observe their effects on the glycopeptide enrichment process. Isopropanol proved less effective in enriching glycopeptides, while acetonitrile was the most efficient, with methanol in between. Higher formic acid concentrations in the elution solvent weakened the ionic interactions, particularly with sialylated glycopeptides. Substituting formic acid with acetic acid led to earlier elution of more glycopeptides. The acetonitrile concentration in conditioning and washing solutions played a key role; at 65% acetonitrile, glycopeptides were not retained on the SPE column and were detected in the flow-through fraction. Ultimately, it was proven that the enrichment method was applicable to human plasma samples, resulting in a significant decrease in the abundances of non-glycosylated peptides. To the best of our knowledge, this study represents the first systematic investigation into the impact of the mobile phase on glycopeptide enrichment using an aminopropyl-modified SPE column in HILIC mode. This study demonstrates the substantial impact of even minor variations in experimental conditions, which have not yet been considered in the literature, on SPE-HILIC glycopeptide enrichment. Consequently, meticulous optimization of these conditions is imperative to enhance the specificity and selectivity of glycoproteomic analysis, ensuring accurate and reliable quantification. Background: Brassinosteroids (BRs) are a class of naturally occurring steroidal phytohormones mediating a wide range of pivotal developmental and physiological functions throughout the plant’s life cycle. Therefore, it is of great significance to determine the content and the distribution of BRs in plants.Regretfully, although a large number of quantitative methods for BRs by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) have been reported, the in planta distribution of BRs is still unclear because of their lower contents in plant tissues and the lack of effective ionizable groups in their chemical structures. Methods: We stablished a novel analytical method of BRs based on C18 cartridge solid-phase extraction (SPE) purification, 4-(dimethylamino)-phenylboronic acid (DMAPBA) derivatization, and online valve-switching system coupled with ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography-electro spray ionization-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS). This method has been used to quantify three structural types of BRs (epibrassinolide, epicastasterone, and 6-deoxo-24-epicastaster one) in different organs of Brassica napus L. (rapeseed). Results: We obtained the contents of three structural types of BRs in various organ tissues of rapeseed. The contents of three BRs in rapeseed flowers were the highest, followed by tender pods. The levels of three BRs all decreased during the maturation of the organs. We outlined the spatial distribution maps of three BRs in rapeseed based on these results, so as to understand the spatial distribution of BRs at the visual level. Conclusions: Our results provided useful information for the precise in situ localization of BRs in plants and the metabolomic research of BRs in future work. The amount of macrolide (MAL) residues in aquatic products, including oleandomycin (OLD), erythromycin (ERM), clarithromycin (CLA), azithromycin (AZI), kitasamycin (KIT), josamycin (JOS), spiramycin (SPI), tilmicosin (TIL), tylosin (TYL), and roxithromycin (ROX), was determined using solid-phase extraction and ultra-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The residues were extracted with 1% ammonia acetonitrile solution and purified by neutral alumina adsorption. Chromatographic separation was completed on an ACQUITY UPLC BEH C18 column with acetonitrile–0.1% formic acid aqueous solution as the mobile phase, and mass spectrometry detection was performed by multiple reaction monitoring scanning with the positive mode in an electrospray ion source (ESI+). Five isotopically labeled compounds were used as internal standards for quality control purposes. The findings indicated that across the mass concentration span of 1.0–100 μg/L, there was a strong linear correlation (R2 > 0.99) between the concentration and instrumental response for the 10 MALs. The limit of detection of UPLC-MS/MS was 0.25–0.50 μg/kg, and the limit of quantitation was 0.5–1.0 μg/kg. The added recovery of blank matrix samples at standard gradient levels (1.0, 5.0, and 50.0 μg/kg) was 83.1–116.6%, and the intra-day precision and inter-day precisions were 3.7 and 13.8%, respectively. The method is simple and fast, with high accuracy and good repeatability, in line with the requirements for accurate qualitative and quantitative analysis of the residues for 10 MALs in aquatic products. In this study, adsorbents based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) in two solid-phase extraction application forms, pipette tip and magnetic extraction, were used for the selective extraction of coumarins. The pipette-tip solid-phase extraction reduced solvent volumes; the magnetic MIP extraction was simple and effective for phase separation. Parameters affecting extraction, such as the amount of adsorbent, type of washing solvent, volume of the elution solvent, and extraction times for magnetic extraction, were optimized. The MIP-based adsorbents displayed high selectivity and extraction efficiency, resulting in recoveries ranging from 70.3 to 102.0% (RSD % less than 5.5%) for five coumarins under study, 6,7-dihydroxycoumarin-6-β-D-glucoside, coumarin, 7-methoxycoumarin, 6-methylcoumarin, and dicoumarol. The extracts were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array (DAD) and fluorescence (FLD) detectors, reaching limits of quantification of 0.5 and 0.9 µg·mL−1 for coumarin and dicoumarol detected by DAD and 0.001–0.012 µg·mL−1 for the other prohibited simple coumarins when used as a fragrance (detected by FLD). A citric acid cross-linked β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) polymer was synthesized and loaded on micro-ceramic balls to fabricate the solid-phase adsorbents (P-MCB) for adsorption and extraction of triazole pesticides from water. The stability of β-CD polymer and P-MCB was investigated in solutions with different pH values at different temperatures. The adsorption properties and the influence of kinetics, sorbent amount, pesticide concentration, and temperature on the adsorption capacity were evaluated. The results showed P-MCB had favorable adsorption of 15.98 mg/g flutriafol in 3.5 h. The equilibrium data followed the Freundlich equation, and the adsorption of flutriafol and diniconazole followed the second-order kinetics. The recovery rate of P-MCB for triazole pesticides in water was satisfactory, and the recovery rate was still 80.1%, even at the 10th cycle. The P-MCB had good stability, with a degradation rate of 0.2% ± 0.08 within 10 days, which could ensure extraction and recycling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many agrochemicals are chiral molecules, and most of them are marketed as racemates or diastereomeric mixtures. Stereoisomers that are not the active enantiomer have little or no pesticidal activity and can exert serious toxic effects towards non-target organisms. Thus, investigating the possible exposure to different isomers of chiral pesticides is an urgent need. The present work was aimed at developing a new enantioselective high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method for the simultaneous determination of nine chiral pesticides in urine. Two solid-phase extraction (SPE) procedures, based on different carbon-based sorbents (graphitized carbon black (GCB) and buckypaper (BP)), were developed and compared. By using GCB, all analytes were recovered with yields ranging from 60 to 97%, while BP allowed recoveries greater than 54% for all pesticides except those with acid characteristics. Baseline separation was achieved for the enantiomers of all target agrochemicals on a Lux Cellulose-2 column within 24 min under reversed-phase mode. The developed method was then validated according to the FDA guidelines for bioanalytical methods. Besides recovery, the other evaluated parameters were precision (7–15%), limits of detection (0.26–2.21 µg/L), lower limits of quantitation (0.43–3.68 µg/L), linear dynamic range, and sensitivity. Organophosphorous (OP) pesticides can cause many human diseases. In this study, the separation and determination of two organophosphorous pesticides (diazinon and methyl-parathion) in biological samples using solid-phase extraction method prior to their measurements by high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) were investigated. Herein, a new functionalized cerium-based metal–organic framework (MOF) bearing oxime moiety, denoted here UiO-66(Ce)-MO, was synthesized through two-synthetic steps from the pristine UiO-66(Ce) and then applied as an efficient porous adsorbent for the extraction of pesticides from biological samples. Various techniques including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis were used for the description of adsorbent. The optimization of variables was performed by Box–Behnken design combined with response surface methodology. The factors' effects including pH, eluent volume (EV), sample flow rate (SF) and eluent flow rate (EF) were also examined. The optimum conditions for both compounds were pH 5.5, eluent volume 0.6 mL, SF 2 mL min−1, and EF 0.2 mL min−1, leading to 97.1% and 96.0% removal of diazinon and methyl-parathion, respectively. Under the optimum conditions, the maximum adsorption capacity was obtained 454.5 mg g−1 for methyl-parathion and 476.2 mg g−1 for diazinon. The limit of detection (LOD) was found to be 0.04 μgL−1 for diazinon and 0.06 μgL−1 for methyl-parathion. Sensitivity analysis showed that pH plays a significant role on the efficiency of both organic pollutants. Remarkably, the results showed that this adsorbent outperforms the other UiO-66(Ce) samples and is suitable for separation and determination of these organic materials from water and biological real samples (blood plasma and urine). A porous oxime-functionalized Ce-MOF, UiO-66(Ce)-MO, was synthesized and applied for efficient extraction and determination of trace amounts of methyl-parathion and diazinon from water and biological samples. Some South American countries have ancient traditions that may pose legal problems, such as the consumption of coca leaves, as this can provide positive results for cocaine use after the analysis of biological samples. For this reason, it is necessary to find specific markers that help differentiate legal from illegal consumption, such as tropacocaine, cinnamoylcocaine, and especially hygrine and cuscohygrine. In this work, two techniques for collecting biological samples are compared: the Quantisal® Oral Fluid collection device and passive drooling. Once the samples were collected, they were subjected to solid-phase extraction for subsequent injection into GC-MS. Different validation parameters included in international guides have been studied to evaluate whether the proposed method is valid for the defined purpose, placing special emphasis on the study of the matrix effect and little value on GC-MS analyses. With respect to this parameter, an increase in the signal was found for CUS and t-CIN, but it was not significant for the rest of the substances studied. The recoveries have varied significantly depending on the way of working, being higher when working with standardized areas. After carrying out work with the oral fluid samples collected from laboratory volunteers, the method was applied to two real samples. Introduction: 2,5-diketopiperazines are the simplest forms of cyclic dipeptides (CDPs) and have diverse frameworks with chiral side chains that are useful for drug development. Previous research has investigated the antimicrobial properties of proline-linked CDPs and their combinations in the culture filtrate (CF) of Lactobacillus plantarum LBP-K10 using anion exchange chromatography (AEC). However, the quantity of CDPs showcasing notable anti-influenza virus activity derived from AECs was generally lower than those originating from Lactobacillus CF.Methods: To address this issue, the study aims to propose a more efficient method for isolating CDPs and to introduce the antiviral combinations of CDPs obtained using a new method. The study employed a novel technique entailing high-throughput C18-based solid-phase extraction with a methanol gradient (MeSPE). The MeSPE method involved increasing the methanol concentration from 5% to 50% in 5% increments.Results: The methanol SPE fractions (MeSPEfs) eluted with methanol concentrations between 35% and 45% evinced substantial efficacy in inhibiting the influenza A/H3N2 virus via plaque-forming assay. MeSPEf-45, the 45% MeSPEf, exhibited exceptional efficacy in preventing viral infections in Madin-Darby kidney cells, surpassing both individual CDPs and the entire set of MeSPEfs. To identify the specific antiviral components of MeSPEf-45, all MeSPEfs were further fractionated through preparative high-performance liquid chromatography (prep-HPLC). MeSPEf-45 fractions S8 and S11 presented the highest activity against multidrug-resistant bacteria and influenza A/H3N2 virus among all MeSPEfs, with 11 common fractions. Antiviral fractions S8 and S11 were identified as proline-based CDPs, specifically cis-cyclo(L-Leu-L-Pro) and cis-cyclo(L-Phe-L-Pro), using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The combination of MeSPEf-45 fractions S8 and S11 displayed superior antibacterial and anti-influenza virus effects compared to the individual fractions S8 and S11.Discussion: High-throughput MeSPE-derived MeSPEfs and subsequent HPLC-fractionated fractions presents an innovative approach to selectively purify large amounts of potent antimicrobial CDPs from bacterial CF. The findings also show the effectiveness of physiologically bioactive combinations that utilize fractions not containing CDP. This study provides the initial evidence demonstrating the antimicrobial properties of CDPs acquired through high-throughput SPE techniques.

Abstract Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the global oceans is an important long‐term carbon sink. Connections between molecular size, reactivity, and isotopic characteristics show that DOC exists on a continuum from biologically reactive to recalcitrant. The driving mechanisms behind the creation and persistence of recalcitrant DOC remain unknown. We show mean recalcitrant DOC (isolated via solid‐phase extraction; SPE‐DOC) δ13C values are 1.3 ± 0.6‰ lower than mean total DOC δ13C between depth ranges 0–200 m and 2–4 km on three GO‐SHIP Repeat Hydrography cruises. Lowest observed δ13C values correlate with low ∆14C and proximity to deep ocean hydrothermal systems. These data support the hypothesis that reworking of DOC through the microbial carbon pump is a key driver of the ocean's long‐term carbon sink. Mass‐balance modeling shows deep‐ocean DOC not captured by SPE is enriched in 13C, highlighting the need for continued research on non‐retained DOC to predict mechanisms that drive ocean carbon storage.

Oxytocin has become a popular analyte in behavioral endocrinology in recent years, due in part to its roles in social behavior, stress physiology, and cognition. Urine samples have the advantage of being non-invasive and minimally disruptive to collect, allowing for oxytocin measurements even in some wild populations. However, methods for urinary oxytocin immunoassay have not been sufficiently optimized and rigorously assessed for their potential limitations. Using samples from oxytocin knockout (KO) and wildtype (WT) mice, we find evidence of considerable interference in unextracted urine samples, with similar distributions of measured oxytocin in both genotypes. Importantly, although this interference can be reduced by a reversed-phase solid-phase extraction (SPE), this common approach is not sufficient for eliminating false-positive signal on three immunoassay kits. To better understand the source of the observed interference, we conducted epitope mapping of the Arbor Assays antibody and assessed its cross-reactivity with known, biologically active fragments of oxytocin. We found considerable cross-reactivity (0.5-52% by-molarity) for three fragments of oxytocin that share the core epitope, with more cross-reactivity for longer fragments. Given the presence of some cross-reactivity for even the tripeptide MIF-1, it is likely that many small protein metabolites might be sufficiently similar to the epitope that at high concentrations they interfere with immunoassays. We present a new mixed-mode cation-exchange SPE method that minimizes interference-with knockout samples measuring below the assays limit of detection-while effectively retaining oxytocin from the urine of wildtype mice. This method demonstrates good parallelism and spike recovery across multiple species (mice, dogs, sifakas, humans). Our results suggest that immunoassays of urine samples may be particularly susceptible to interference, even when using common extraction protocols, but that this interference can be successfully managed using a novel mixed-mode cation exchange extraction. These findings imply that previous conclusions based on urinary oxytocin measurements-especially those involving unextracted samples-may need to be reassessed.

Introduction: The accurate quantification of amyloid beta (Aβ) peptides in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is crucial for Alzheimer's disease (AD) research, particularly in terms of preclinical and biomarker studies. Traditional methods, such as the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), have limitations. These include high costs, labor intensity, lengthy processes, and the possibility of cross-reactivity. Objectives: The primary objectives of this research were twofold: to comprehensively characterize Aβ peptides and to develop a reliable and accurate method for the simultaneous quantification of Aβ 1–40 and Aβ 1–42 peptides in surrogate CSF that is traceable to the International System of Units (SI). Methods: We developed a novel method that combined solid phase extraction (SPE) with isotope dilution liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (ID-LC/MSMS). SPE was employed to efficiently eliminate matrix interferences, while [15N] Aβ1-40 and [15N] Aβ1-42 served as internal standards to improve accuracy. In addition, we introduced Peptide Impurity Corrected Amino Acid Analysis (PICAA) to ensure traceability to the SI and reliable quantification of Aβ peptides. Results: The developed platform demonstrated a linear calibration range of 300–20000 pg/ml for both Aβ1-42 and Aβ1-40 peptides, accompanied by strong correlation coefficients greater than 0.995. Quality Control (QC) samples demonstrated an accuracy of at least 90.0 %. Conclusion: The enhanced specificity and flexibility of the developed platform potentially have implications for Alzheimer's disease diagnosis and future investigations of novel Aβ peptide biomarkers.

Solid-phase extraction (SPE) coupled with capillary electrophoresis (CE) for the determination of macrolide antibiotics (azithromycin, clarithromycin, roxithromycin, tylosin) and tiamulin in water samples was described in this article. These compounds were extracted with different types of sorbents ( Oasis HLB, C18, C8, SDB, and Strata-X) and different masses of sorbents (60 mg, 200 mg, and 500 mg) using different organic solvents (methanol, ethanol, and acetonitrile) and different pH values of water samples (pH 7.00, 8.00, and 9.00). It was found that the highest extraction efficiency of the studied compounds was obtained with 200 mg/3 mL C18 cartridges with methanol as eluent at pH 9.00 of the water sample. The developed SPE-CE method for macrolide antibiotics and tiamulin was validated for linearity, precision, repeatability, the limit of detection (LOD), the limit of quantification (LOQ), and recovery. Good linearity was obtained in the range of 0.3–30 mg L−1 depending on the drug, with correlation coefficients higher than 0.9958 in all cases except clarithromycin (0.9873). Expanded measurement uncertainties were calculated for each pharmaceutical, accounting for 20.31 % (azithromycin), 38.33 % (tiamulin), 28.95 % (clarithromycin), 26.99 % (roxithromycin), and 21.09 % (tiamulin). Uncertainties associated with precision and calibration curves contributed the most to the combined measurement uncertainty. The method was successfully applied to the analysis of production waste-water from the pharmaceutical industry.

A simple, fast, and low-cost pre-concentration methodology based on the application of solid-phase extraction coupled to layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and capillary electrophoresis was developed for the determination of naproxen (NPX), diclofenac (DFC), and ibuprofen (IBP) in environmental sample waters. A systematic study of the LDH composition was designed, including the effects of interlayer anions (NO3−, Cl−, CO32−, BenO−, and SDS−) and the effect of molar ratio (Mg:Al). The optimal composition of MgAl/Cl−-LDH (Mg:Al; 1.5:1.0) was coupled to an SPE system: pH (neutral pH), LDH amount (15 mg), and extraction capacity ranged from 79.71 to 83.11% for the three anti-inflammatory non-steroidal agents analyzed. A recovery rate of up to 80.87% was obtained when 0.01 M chloride acid in methanol was used as the eluent and 50 mL of sample was used. Under optimal conditions, the linear range of the calibration curve ranges from 18.02 to 200 μg L−1, with limits of detection ranging from 6.03 to 18.02 μg L−1 for the three NSAIDs. The precision of the methodology was evaluated in terms of inter- and intra-day repeatability, with %RSD < 10% in all cases. The proposed method was applied to analyze environmental water samples (bottle, tap, cistern, well, and river water samples). The developed method is a robust technique capable of combining with other analytical methods to quantitatively determine anti-inflammatory non-steroidal agents.

The global rise of new psychoactive substances (NPSs) poses challenges for their analysis in biological matrices due to their complex chemistries and short market lifespan. A comparative study for the simultaneous extraction, separation, and detection of 19 NPSs was conducted. Six solid-phase extraction (SPE) methods and one supported liquid extraction method (SLE) were compared for the extraction of analytes from blood, serum, plasma, and urine. Comparisons of four derivatization agents were conducted, at four temperatures and two incubation times. Extraction methods were assessed by precision, sensitivity, and extraction efficiency. Derivatizing agents were assessed on their selectivity and sensitivity, and a three-way ANOVA was conducted to determine statistical significance. CSDAU SPE cartridges were shown to be the most efficient when extracting analytes from blood, serum, and plasma, whereas Xcel I cartridges performed the strongest when extracting analytes from urine. SPE extraction efficiencies, when utilizing the best-performing cartridges, ranged from 49 to 119%. SLE successfully extracted all analytes from all matrices (ranging from 22 to 120%). Pentafluoropropionic anhydride: ethyl acetate was the most successful derivatizing agent, allowing all analytes to be detected, with the highest peak area responses and more unique spectra. The optimum temperature for incubation was 37 °C, with no statistical difference found between the two incubation times.

In this study, amino-modified micro-mesoporous silica (NH2-MMS) with hierarchical pores was prepared by modifying micro-mesoporous silica ZSM-5 with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and used as an adsorbent in solid-phase extraction to analyze free fatty acids (FFAs) in krill oil during storage for an initial time. The Brunner Emmet Teller adsorption experiment and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrate that NH2-MMS, with a hierarchical pore structure, was successfully synthesized. The adsorption experiments, especially static adsorption, indicate that the absorption ability of the prepared NH2-MMS, with a hierarchical pore structure, toward FFAs was better than that of traditional amino-modified mesoporous silica (SBA-15) with a mesoporous structure at all temperature and concentrations. Fairly low limits of detection (0.06–0.15 μg g−1), acceptable recoveries (85.16–94.31%), and precision (0.08–5.26%) were attained under ideal circumstances. Moreover, NH2-MMS has the advantages of easy preparation and being environmentally friendly. As a result, this method offers an alternative to the current method for determining FFAs in different kinds of oil specimens.

This work focuses on the development of a hybrid material based on SBA-15 silica with a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP), using spiramycin (SPI) as a template, for use as sorbent in solid-phase extraction (SPE). Characterization techniques such as nitrogen gas adsorption–desorption isotherms, infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the structure and properties of the SBA-15@MIP-SPI material. SPE conditions using SBA-15@MIP-SPI as sorbent were optimized, which allowed us to demonstrate the high selectivity and adsorption capacity of SPI on the synthesized material. The best conditions were 50 mg of sorbent, loading with 1 mL of standard solution or sample of cow milk previously extracted in acetonitrile and eluting with 3 mL of methanol with 1% acetic acid. After the optimization process, the material demonstrated recovery percentages of 81 ± 3% in SPI standard solutions and showed its potential in cow milk samples (71 ± 6%). The novelty of the research consists of the combination of MIPs with SBA-15, which could offer important advantages in terms of specific surface area and porous structure, thus improving performance and reducing the amount of sorbent compared to other traditional methods.

Fatty acid analysis is an essential step in evaluating the potential of macroalgae for biodiesel production. An extraction method was developed to simultaneously analyze up to five types of biodiesel-fuel-related fatty acids (myristic acid, palmitic acid, cis-palmitvaccenic acid, stearic acid, and oleic acid) in macroalgae using liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS). Lypophilization and solid-phase extraction (SPE) techniques were applied to improve the extraction efficiency and effectively purify samples. The optimal conditions for SPE were set by comparing the recoveries according to the various solvent conditions for each step (loading, washing, and elution). In addition, the introduction of trimethylaminoethyl (TMAE) derivatives to the hydroxyl group of the target analyte increased the ionization efficiency and sensitivity. The derivatized samples were analyzed using the LC–MS/MS method with electrospray ionization in the positive and multiple-reaction monitoring modes. The target analytes were separated and detected within 13.5 min using a CAPCELL PAK C18 MGII S3 column. Gradient elution was performed using distilled water and acetonitrile containing 5 mM ammonium acetate. This method offers a reliable and sensitive tool for the analysis of macroalgae samples for their potential use in biodiesel production. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been recognized as a potentially serious threat to the natural environment. NSAIDs are popular painkillers, and the main pathway for them to reach natural water is via discharge from wastewater and sewage treatment plants. In order to monitor contamination caused by these drugs, as well as their impact on the environment, a new material based on Silica Gel 60, functionalized with a dendrimeric copolymer of methylamine and 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (named MA-BDDE), was prepared. Initial physicochemical characterization of the MA-BDDE material was carried out using ATR FT-IR spectroscopy as well as solid-state carbon-13 NMR spectroscopy. Its effectiveness at NSAID extraction was evaluated by the application of five select drugs in dispersive solid-phase extraction (dSPE): aspirin, ketoprofen, naproxen, diclofenac and ibuprofen. This was followed by their simultaneous determination using the HPLC-UV/Vis system demonstrating good sensitivity, with limits of detection values within the 63–265 ng mL−1 range. A comparison of the sorption capacity of each pharmaceutical with unmodified base silica showed an at least tenfold increase in capacity after modification. Initial MA-BDDE application in a quick, low-waste extraction procedure of those select NSAIDs from spiked surface water samples yielded promising results for its use as a sorbent, as recovery values of analytes adsorbed from various samples were found to exceed 72%. Using straightforward and cost-effective methods, persimmon leaves were converted into high-quality powder. This powder was applied as an adsorbent for the removal of Cu(II) and Cd(II) from aqueous solutions. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the presence of particles with non-homogeneous sizes and rough textures. The biosorbent exhibited a specific surface area of approximately 0.44 ± 0.015 m2 g−1. Elemental analysis and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) confirmed the presence of elements such as sulfur, phosphorus, nitrogen, and oxygen. The results of 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (13C-NMR), obtained using the cross-polarization technique, show the presence of groups containing sulfur and oxygen. Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated the existence of amine and hydroxyl groups. The material was used in the solid-phase extraction of Cu(II) and Cd(II) in batch experiments, and its adsorption capacity was evaluated as a function of time, pH, and analyte concentration. The fraction with a diameter between 63 and 106 μm was selected for the adsorption tests. Kinetic equilibrium was reached within 5 min, and the experimental data were fitted to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The optimum pH for the adsorption of both metal species was approximately 5.0. The adsorption isotherms were adjusted using the modified Langmuir equation, and the maximum amount of metal species extracted from the solution was determined to be 0.213 mmol g−1 for Cu(II) and 0.215 mmol g−1 for Cd(II), with high linear correlation coefficients for both metals. Persimmon leaves are typically abundant during the growing season, and because they are seasonal, the Diospyros kaki L.f. tree undergoes the natural process of leaf abscission, ensuring the availability of leaves for application. Speciation analysis is a relevant topic since the (eco)toxicity, bioavailability, bio (geo)chemical cycles, and mobility of a given element depend on its chemical forms (oxidation state, organic ligands, etc.). The reliability of analytical results for chemical species of elements depends mostly on the maintaining of their stability during the sample pretreatment step and on the selectivity of further separation step. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is a matter of choice as the most suitable and widely used procedure for both enrichment of chemical species of elements and their separation. The features of sorbent material are of great importance to ensure extraction efficiency from one side and selectivity from the other side of the SPE procedure.
