The COVID-19 pandemic led to unprecedented challenges to healthcare quality in the emergency department, including directly impacting quality metrics and worsening barriers to the quality improvement process such as burnout, staff turnover, and boarding. We aimed to develop a blueprint for postpandemic quality improvement to address these specific barriers, focused on prioritizing frontline staff engagement from idea generation to implementation and assessment. Drawing from teamwork literature, we constructed a process that emphasized egalitarian conversations, psychological safety, and creating an environment where staff could feel heard at every step of the process. OBJECTIVE: To estimate and contrast the relationships between nurse staffing and health outcomes in nursing homes with low and high dementia census, to understand the association of staffing hours with dementia care quality. DATA SOURCES AND STUDY SETTING: A national sample of nursing homes during 2017-2019 (pre-COVID). Data included the Payroll-Based Journal, Medicare Claims, Nursing Home Care Compare, and Long-Term Care Focus. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective, regression analyses. We estimated separate linear models predicting six long-term facility-level outcomes. Independent variables included staffing hours per resident-day (HPRD) interacted with the facility percentage of dementia residents, controlling for other resident and facility characteristics. DATA COLLECTION/EXTRACTION METHODS: Hospital-based nursing homes, those with fewer than 30% dementia residents, and missing data were excluded. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We found that registered nurses and certified nurse assistants HPRDs were likely to exhibit positive returns in terms of outcomes throughout most of the range of HPRD for both high and low-census dementia facilities, although, high- and low-dementia facilities differed in most outcome rates at all staffing levels. Average predicted antipsychotics and activities of daily living as functions of HPRD were worse in higher dementia facilities, independent movement, and hospitalizations did not differ significantly, and Emergency Rooms and pressure sores were worse in lower dementia facilities. Average marginal effects were not statistically different [CI included zero] between the high and low dementia facilities for any outcome. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that increasing staffing will improve outcomes by similar increments in both low- and high-dementia facilities for all outcomes. However, at any given level of staffing, absolute differences in outcomes between low- and high-dementia facilities remain, suggesting that additional staffing alone will not suffice to close these gaps. Further studies are required to identify opportunities for improvement in performance for both low- and high-dementia census facilities.

Ensuring quality in healthcare calls for a coordinated, systematic, congruous, and sustained approach. Nevertheless, it demands defining what the quality of healthcare means in the local context. Presently, the Malaysian healthcare system utilizes various definitions of quality of healthcare across the different initiatives and levels of healthcare, which can lead to fragmented or ineffective quality improvement. The study aims to describe the process undertaken in developing an explicit definition of the quality of healthcare tailored to the Malaysian context, which is currently lacking. A pluralistic method was used to explore the different perspectives. Three distinct approaches were used to understand how quality is defined among the different stakeholder groups: (i) interactive policy-makers engagement sessions, (ii) a review of local quality-related documents, and (iii) an online survey engaging the public. The domains depicting quality of healthcare that emerged through these three approaches were mapped against a framework and synthesized to form the local definition of quality. A national quality-related technical working group convened on several sessions to achieve consensus and finalize the definition of quality of healthcare. Quality healthcare in Malaysia is defined as providing high-quality healthcare that is safe, timely, effective, equitable, efficient, people-centred, and accessible [STEEEPA] which is innovative and responsive to the needs of the people, and is delivered as a team, in a caring and professional manner in order to improve health outcomes and client experience. The consensus-driven local definition of healthcare quality will guide policies and ensure standardization in measuring quality, thereby steering efforts to improve the quality of healthcare services delivered in Malaysia.

PurposeTo develop and evaluate a deep learning (DL) model to assess fundus photograph quality, and quantitatively measure its impact on automated POAG detection in independent study populations.MethodsImage quality ground truth was determined by manual review of 2815 fundus photographs of healthy and POAG eyes from the Diagnostic Innovations in Glaucoma Study and African Descent and Glaucoma Evaluation Study (DIGS/ADAGES), as well as 11,350 from the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study (OHTS). Human experts assessed a photograph as high quality if of sufficient quality to determine POAG status and poor quality if not. A DL quality model was trained on photographs from DIGS/ADAGES and tested on OHTS. The effect of DL quality assessment on DL POAG detection was measured using area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC).ResultsThe DL quality model yielded an AUROC of 0.97 for differentiating between high- and low-quality photographs; qualitative human review affirmed high model performance. Diagnostic accuracy of the DL POAG model was significantly greater (P < 0.001) in good (AUROC, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.80-0.92) compared with poor quality photographs (AUROC, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.67-0.88).ConclusionsThe DL quality model was able to accurately assess fundus photograph quality. Using automated quality assessment to filter out low-quality photographs increased the accuracy of a DL POAG detection model.Translational relevanceIncorporating DL quality assessment into automated review of fundus photographs can help to decrease the burden of manual review and improve accuracy for automated DL POAG detection.

INTRODUCTION: Olive oil is a widely recognized and appreciated food commodity, its quality and health benefits can be compromised when the oil goes through oxidative processes that may occur during production and storage. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the olive genotype on polar phenolic content after seven months of storage. METHODS: Oil produced from eight different olive cultivars (Leccino, Leccio del Corno, Moraiolo, Frantoio, Bianchera, Pendolino, Maurino, and Caninese) grown in southern Tuscany, Italy, were subjected to chemical analysis such as free fatty acids, peroxide value, K232 and K268, phenolics and UPLC-DAD at the beginning of the trial (Control) and seven months later (Stored). RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Free fatty acids, peroxide values, K232 and K268, significantly increased, suggesting heightened hydrolysis and oxidation after storage. A cultivar effect was observed, with Leccino, Moraiolo, and Pendolino showing less susceptibility to oxidation (low differences between Control and Stored). In contrast, others (Bianchera and Caninese) are more affected (higher differences between Control and Stored). Phenolics analysis supports this observation, revealing that samples with higher resistance to oxidation exhibit elevated levels of hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol, vanillic acid, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, and ferulic acid. Principal Component Analysis highlights that Bianchera and Caninese cultivars correlate with rutin, tyrosol, and pinoresinol. As this research delves into the intricate relationship between genotype diversity, phenolic composition, and oxidative stability, a nuanced understanding emerges, shedding light on how different cultivars may present varying compositions and concentrations of phenols, ultimately influencing the oils resistance to the oxidation that occurred during storage.

Drought poses a significant ecological threat that limits the production of crops worldwide. The objective of this study to examine the impact of soil applied biochar (BC) and peatmoss (PM) on the morpho-biochemical and quality traits of tobacco plants under drought conditions. In the present experiment work, a pot trial was conducted with two levels of drought severity (~ well-watered 75 ± 5% field capacity) and severe drought stress (~ 35 ± 5% field capacity), two levels of peatmoss (PM) @ 5% [PM+ (with peatmoss) and PM- (without peatmoss)] and three levels of rice straw biochar (BC0 = no biochar; BC1 = 150 mg kg− 1; and BC2 = 300 mg kg− 1 of soil) in tobacco plants. The results indicate that drought conditions significantly impacted the performance of tobacco plants. However, the combined approach of BC and PM significantly improved the growth, biomass, and total chlorophyll content (27.94%) and carotenoids (32.00%) of tobacco. This study further revealed that the drought conditions decreased the production of lipid peroxidation and proline accumulation. But the synergistic approach of BC and PM application increased soluble sugars (17.63 and 12.20%), soluble protein (31.16 and 15.88%), decreased the proline accumulation (13.92 and 9.03%), and MDA content (16.40 and 8.62%) under control and drought stressed conditions, respectively. Furthermore, the combined approach of BC and PM also improved the leaf potassium content (19.02%) by limiting the chloride ions (33.33%) under drought stressed conditions. Altogether, the balanced application of PM and BC has significant potential as an effective approach and sustainable method to increase the tolerance of tobacco plants subjected to drought conditions. To investgate the effects of potassium (K) application on the agronomic traits and fruit quality of Lycium barbarum L. (Goji), three levels of K fertilizer, namely LK (25 g/plant), CK (50 g/plant), and HK (75 g/plant), were applied to plants in phytotron for observing and measuring relevant indicators. The investigation involved seven agronomic traits: plant height, plant stem diameter, new branch increment, yield of fresh fruits per plant, dry fruit quantity within 50 g, ratio of different grade fruits, and ratio of longitudinal diameter to transverse diameter of Goji fruits. The results showed that K application level had significant effect on ratio of the longitudinal diameter to the transverse diameter of fresh Goji fruits, and that the influence on other agronomic traits was slight. In the meanwhile, the concentrations of amino acids, betaine, polysaccharides and flavonoids of Goji fruits in different levels of K fertilizer were tested. The K treatment increased the content of glutamic acid, and decreased that of flavonoids (P < 0.05), whereas the content of other amino acids, polysaccharides and betaine were unaffected. A total of 132 flavonoid metabolites was identified. Among them, K treatment up-regulated 36 metabolites and down-regulated 30 metabolites (P < 0.05). The United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) is a nonprofit, scientific, standard-setting organization, and world leader in establishing quality, purity, and testing standards for medicines, foods, and dietary supplements. USP quality standards are used in more than 140 countries and are legally recognized by more than 40 countries. Currently, there is renewed interest in herbal medicines globally, and health policies are being implemented worldwide for the use of complementary and traditional medicine. In response, USP has developed a robust body of monographs that can be used to guide industry and regulators in ensuring the quality and safety of botanical ingredients used in dietary supplements and herbal medicines. Throughout the Pan American regions, there is a strong tradition of using botanicals as herbal medicines and, as in other regions, a growing desire for botanical dietary supplements. This underscores the need for public quality standards to ensure quality, reduce the flow of substandard and adulterated products, and ensure public health and safety. In April 2022, USP launched the Pan America Botanical Dietary Supplements and Herbal Medicines Expert Panel, with experts representing 12 different countries. The Expert Panel's work focuses on developing quality control standards for the most important botanical ingredients used in the respective countries, ingredients that are also of global importance. This article provides an overview of the state of botanical dietary supplements and herbal medicines in different Pan American regions with a focus on the regulatory status of herbal products, the development of national quality and research initiatives, and policies related to agriculture conservation and sustainability, among other topics. Smartphone-based artificial intelligence (AI) diagnostic systems could assist high-risk patients to self-screen for corneal diseases (e.g., keratitis) instead of detecting them in traditional face-to-face medical practices, enabling the patients to proactively identify their own corneal diseases at an early stage. However, AI diagnostic systems have significantly diminished performance in low-quality images which are unavoidable in real-world environments (especially common in patient-recorded images) due to various factors, hindering the implementation of these systems in clinical practice. Here, we construct a deep learning-based image quality monitoring system (DeepMonitoring) not only to discern low-quality cornea images created by smartphones but also to identify the underlying factors contributing to the generation of such low-quality images, which can guide operators to acquire high-quality images in a timely manner. This system performs well across validation, internal, and external testing sets, with AUCs ranging from 0.984 to 0.999. DeepMonitoring holds the potential to filter out low-quality cornea images produced by smartphones, facilitating the application of smartphone-based AI diagnostic systems in real-world clinical settings, especially in the context of self-screening for corneal diseases. Background: The internet is a common source of health information for patients and caregivers. To date, content and information quality of YouTube videos on sarcoidosis has not been studied. The aim of our study was to investigate the content and quality of information on sarcoidosis provided by YouTube videos. Methods: Of the first 200 results under the search term "sarcoidosis," all English-language videos with content directed at patients were included. Two independent investigators assessed the content of the videos based on 25 predefined key features (content score with 0–25 points), as well as reliability and quality (HONCode score with 0–8 points, DISCERN score with 1–5 points). Misinformation contained in the videos was described qualitatively. Results: The majority of the 85 included videos were from an academic or governmental source (n = 63, 74%), and median time since upload was 33 months (IQR 10–55). Median video duration was 8 min (IQR 3–13) and had a median of 2,044 views (IQR 504 − 13,203). Quality assessment suggested partially sufficient information: mean HONCode score was 4.4 (SD 0.9) with 91% of videos having a medium quality HONCode evaluation. Mean DISCERN score was 2.3 (SD 0.5). Video content was generally poor with a mean of 10.5 points (SD 0.6). Frequently absent key features included information on the course of disease (6%), presence of substantial geographical variation (7%), and importance of screening for extrapulmonary manifestations (11%). HONCode scores were higher in videos from academic or governmental sources (p = 0.003), particularly regarding "transparency of sponsorship" (p < 0.001). DISCERN and content scores did not differ by video category. Conclusions: Most YouTube videos present incomplete information reflected in a poor content score, especially regarding screening for extrapulmonary manifestations. Quality was partially sufficient with higher scores in videos from academic or governmental sources, but often missing references and citing specific evidence. This research can be considered as the first complete survey for the valorization of new olive genotypes cultivated in the South-East of Tunisia as well as their oils. The study aimed to characterize the phytochemical composition of virgin olive oil produced from two olive cultivars, namely Nourgou and Gousalani. The pomological characterization of fruits, the quality criteria and the phytochemical profile were quantified. Additionally, antioxidant activity was evaluated using Ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and Oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) tests to also obtain a bioactive characterization of these monovarietal olive oils. The obtained results revealed that the analyzed olive oils samples can be classified into Extra Virgin category (EVOO) according to the regulated physicochemical characteristics. Our findings showed a significant variability in the chemical parameters of the analyzed EVOO likely associated with the genetic potential, mainly for chlorophylls contents (1.37–1.64 mg/kg), in carotenoids pigments (3.97–10.86 mg/kg), in α-tocopherol (175.59–186.87 mg/kg), in sterols (1036.4–1931.4 mg/kg) in oleic acid (65.33–68.73%), in palmitic acid (C16:0) (13.32–17.48%), in linoleic acid (C18:2) (11.06–13.47%). Additionally, the HPLC-MS/MS analysis showed that the two EVOOs analyzed contained appreciable amounts of total polyphenols, ranging from 348.03 up to 516.16 mg/kg, in Nourgou and Gousalani oils, respectively. Regarding the individual phenolic compounds, the EVOO samples were mainly characterized by phenolic alcohols, phenolic acids, secoiridoids, verbascoside, flavonoids and phenolic aldehydes. The prevalent simple phenolics detected were secoiridoids with the dominance of the oleuropein aglycone in Gousalani oil. In addition, findings from in vitro antioxidant assays (FRAP and ORAC) revealed that the two studied oils possessed a powerful antiradical activity and a good reducing power capacity. Currently, the development of renewable energy products (RES) encourages the search for innovative solutions that take into account key criteria from the point of view of their sustainable development. Despite efforts in this area, there is a lack of approaches and tools to support this process. Therefore, the aim of the research was to develop a decision-making model supporting eco-innovation in products based on the key criteria of sustainable development: quality (customer satisfaction with use), environmental impact in the life cycle (LCA), and the cost of investment incurred in the product development. The functioning of the model was based on the following factors: (i) obtaining the voice of customers (VoC) and processing it into product criteria as part of the development of alternative production solutions (prototypes), (ii) prospective quality assessment and subsequent life cycle assessment of prototypes, (iii) cost analysis taking into account both quality and environmental criteria, (iv) interpretation of results and search for eco-innovative product solutions. Development decision-making is additionally supported by techniques implemented in the model, e.g., the CRITIC method, the LCA method with Ecoinvent database in OpenLCA, the CEA method, and the morphology method. The model was illustrated and tested for photovoltaic (PV) panels, after which a global sensitivity analysis was performed in Statistica. The test results showed that the main factor that influenced the PV development decisions was the investment cost, followed by quality (customer satisfaction) and then environmental impact in LCA. Background and aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the possible preanalytical effect of incomplete filling of blood tubes on molecular biology assays. Materials and methods: The study population consisted of 13 healthy volunteers from whom 11 mL of whole blood was collected and then distributed in different volumes (1.5, 3.0, and 6.0 mL, respectively) into three 6.0 mL spray-dried and evacuated K2EDTA blood tubes. Automated RNA extraction was performed using the Maxwell® CSC RNA Blood Kit. DNA was extracted with a MagCorePlusII, with concomitant measurement of glyceralde-hyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) gene expression. The nucleic acid concentration was calculated using the NanoDrop 1000 spectrophotometer, and purity was assessed using A260/280 and A260/230 absorbance ratios. Results: The RNA concentration was higher in the tubes filled with 1.5 and 3.0 mL of blood than in the reference 6 mL filled tube. The RNA 260/280 and RNA 260/230 ratios did not differ significantly between the differently filled blood tubes. The DNA concentration remained constant in the differently filled tubes. Compared to the 6.0 mL reference filled tube, the 1.5 mL and 3.0 mL filled blood tubes displayed a lower DNA 260/280 nm ratio. The DNA 260/230 ratio did not differ significantly in any of the variously filled tubes. Compared to the 6.0 mL reference filled blood tube, the 1.5 mL and 3.0 mL filled blood tubes showed a significant increase in the GAPDHcycle threshold. Conclusions: Our results suggest that underfilling of K2EDTA blood tubes may be a modest but analytically significant source of bias in molecular biology testing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The peculiarities of the decoration of gravure imprints on cardboard using fluorescent inks are considered. The influence of the number of fluorescent impurities added to gravure printing ink on the optical indicators of printed image quality, particularly optical density, and gloss, is investigated. Increasing the number of fluorescent impurities added to the ink from 10 to 30% helps to increase the gloss on imprints from 2 to 15 units. Conducted thermogravimetric studies show the resistance of fluorescent imprints to the influence of temperatures during drying in the printing process. The topography of the surface of the substrates and its influence on the quality of imprints is studied. Conducted electron microscopic studies of imprints obtained with inks with different amounts of fluorescent impurities show their uniform distribution on the surface of the substrate. Studies of the fluorescence spectra of the ink and the imprints formed by it confirm the phenomenon of an increase in the intensity of the glow of printed images. The studies confirm the well-known influence of substrate roughness on the smoothness of gravure imprints. It is established that the absence of significant macro irregularities on the surface of Koppargloss FBB cardboard is due to the presence of two coating layers. Analysis of the surface profiles of FBB cardboard shows that its roughness parameter (Ra = 0.424 μm) is three times smaller compared to Incada Silk C GC1 cardboard (the roughness parameter Ra = 1.28 μm), with a single-layer coating. Such a pattern is also preserved on the imprints, which is reflected in their quality accordingly. Studies show that for imprints on GC1 cardboard, the average ΔE value is 2.23, for imprints on FBB cardboard, the average ΔE value is 3.71, which is due to the presence of double coating. The factors that can influence the process of fluorescence of printed images are outlined. The technological characteristics of inks for gravure printing on packaging are described. Organic vegetable production is needed worldwide to minimize the use of inorganic fertilizers, protect the environment, and produce healthy food. Accordingly, in the present study, the effects of organic granules on the productivity, quality, and nutrient uptake level of tomatoes and the fertility and microbial population of the soil were determined. Briefly, organic NPK granules and organic N, P and K-rich sources were compared with synthetic NPK granules and synthetic fertilizers administered at 100 and 75% of the recommended fertilizer levels. Among the various treatments applied, treatment with 100% of the recommended NPK using the synthetic NPK granules (Urea, DAP and MOP) led to higher growth, yield attributes, and yield (fruit yield, - 24.21 t/ha and stover yield, -15.01 t/ha) of tomato. This treatment also enhanced the nutrient uptake by tomato. However, quality parameters, such as total soluble solids (6.64%), titrable acidity (0.62%), ascorbic acid content (14.31 mg/100 g), lycopene content (3.54 mg/100 g), reducing sugars (3.11%), non-reducing sugars (1.02%), total sugar (4.13%), and shelf life (15.76 days) of tomato were higher with 100% of the recommended NPK from organic NPK granules than from synthetic granules. This treatment also enhanced the available nutrients and microbial population in the soil. Notably, the same trend was observed for tomatoes fertilized with 75 % of the recommended NPK. The lowest values were obtained with the absolute control. Based on the results of this experiment, the application of 100% of the recommended NPK using organic NPK granules is the best approach to improve the quality of tomato fruits and to enhance the soil fertility. Objective: To evaluate the quality and standard of hand-written operative notes in a teaching institute. Methods: This prospective study was carried out in the department of surgery, Fatima Hospital, Baqai Medical University, from January 2023 till May 2023. One hundred fifty operative notes from general surgery domain were considered. These notes were evaluated according to the guidelines of Royal College of Surgeons, with added-on a few variables by the author. Results: All 150 notes were handwritten. Resident surgeon wrote the operative notes under the supervision of primary surgeon. There was a deficiency in mentioning medical record number, procedure starting time and duration of surgery. An important statement about the hemostasis is that it is secured-per-operatively was not documented. The residents were reluctant to explain the surgical procedures diagrammatically. The operative room number was missing in all notes. Post operative instructions lacked the information for nothing per oral, blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, and input and output charting. Conclusion: It is observed that the operative surgical notes were however explainable about the procedure, but quality and standard was not matchable with that of Royal College of Surgeons notes. Hence, a lack of formal training for the resident surgeons in operative notes writing was observed. This study is a thought provoker to the surgeons and a guide to resident trainees, and hospital management to provide a handful operative notes writing theme in the form of performa provided in the department. Societal Impact Statement: Increasing crop productivity is often proposed as a key goal for meeting the food security demands of a growing global population. However, achieving high crop yields alone without meeting end‐use quality requirements is counter to this objective and can lead to negative environmental and sustainability issues. High yielding feed wheat crops in the United Kingdom are a typical example of this. The historical context of UK agricultural industrialisation, developments in plant breeding and wheat end‐use processing are examined. We then outline how employing innovations in plant breeding methods offer the potential to redress the balance between wheat quantity and quality. Summary: Bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) has historically been an important crop for many human civilisations. Today, variability in wheat supply and trade has a large influence on global economies and food security. The United Kingdom is an example of an industrialised country that achieves high wheat yields through intensive cropping systems and a favourable climate. However, only a minority of the wheat grain produced is of suitable end‐use quality for modern bread baking methods and most wheat produced is fed to livestock. A large agricultural land area and input use dedicated to producing grain for animal rather than human food has wide‐ranging negative impacts for environmental sustainability and domestic food production. Here we present an historical perspective of agricultural and economic changes that have resulted in UK production primarily focussing on wheat quantity over quality. Agricultural intensification, liberalisation of free trade in agricultural commodities, innovations in the milling and baking sector, developments in scientific understanding of genetics and plant breeding, and geopolitical changes have all played a role. We propose that wheat breeding plays a crucial role in influencing these issues and although wheat breeders in the United Kingdom have historically applied the most‐up‐to‐date scientific advances, recent advances in genomics tools and quantitative genetics present a unique opportunity for breeders to redress the balance between quantity and quality. This study comprehensively investigated the synergistic effects and underlying mechanisms of optimized water and fertilizer management on the yield, quality, and lodging resistance of hybrid rice (Oryza sativa), through a two-year field experiment. Two hybrid rice varieties, Xinxiangliangyou 1751 (XXLY1751) and Yueliangyou Meixiang Xinzhan (YLYMXXZ), were subjected to three irrigation methods (W1: wet irrigation, W2: flooding irrigation, W3: shallow-wet-dry irrigation) and four nitrogen fertilizer treatments (F1 to F4 with application rates of 0, 180, 225, and 270 kg ha−1, respectively). Our results revealed that the W1F3 treatment significantly enhanced photosynthetic efficiency and non-structural carbohydrate (NSC) accumulation, laying a robust foundation for high yield and quality. NSC accumulation not only supported rice growth but also directly influenced starch and protein synthesis, ensuring smooth grain filling and significantly improving yield and quality. Moreover, NSC strengthened stem fullness and thickness, converting them into structural carbohydrates such as cellulose and lignin, which substantially increased stem mechanical strength and lodging resistance. Statistical analysis demonstrated that water and fertilizer treatments had significant main and interactive effects on photosynthetic rate, dry matter accumulation, yield, quality parameters, NSC, cellulose, lignin, and stem bending resistance. This study reveals the intricate relationship between water and fertilizer management and NSC dynamics, providing valuable theoretical and practical insights for high-yield and high-quality cultivation of hybrid rice, significantly contributing to the sustainable development of modern agriculture. Moringa oleifera Lam. (Moringaceae) is a tropical plant native to India. It is widespread throughout the southern hemisphere, with great adaptability to high temperatures and water scarcity. Its seeds have a great amount of oil with a high content of oleic acid, quite similar to olive oil. Therefore, this study is focused on the extraction of oil from moringa seeds via an automatic screw press extractor at different temperatures (70, 100, 130, 160, 190, and 220 °C) and on the analysis of its acidity, acid value, peroxide value (PV), saponification value (SV), iodine value (IV), optical properties, and fatty acids profile. The results showed that the oil yield was 19 ± 3% regardless of the temperature applied. The oil was stable from the oxidative point of view, with a high acidity. Temperature extraction did not significantly affect the SV and the IV. However, the extraction temperature should be below 190 °C to obtain a translucent and luminous oil with light yellow tones. The oil contains high levels of unsaturated fatty acids, especially oleic acid (ω9) (up to 77.8%) and linolenic acid (ω3) (3.4%). On the other hand, behenic (7%), palmitic (6%), stearic (5%), and arachidic (0.2%) were the dominant saturated acids. The increasing consumption of food supplements demands the development of improved analytical methodologies to ensure their quality and authenticity. In this paper, two new approaches, liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and flow injection analysis-(electrospray ionization) mass spectrometry (FIA-(ESI)MS), were optimized and validated for their application in the quantitative analysis of bioactive S-allyl-L-cysteine (SAC) in commercial aged garlic supplements (AGS). Although both methodologies were found to be useful for the sensitive and precise quantitation of SAC, the LC-MS approach allowed the differential determination of SAC and its bioactive diastereoisomer, S-1-propenyl-L-cysteine (S1PC), together with the identification of a number of organosulfur compounds typical of garlic. Mass fingerprints by FIA-(ESI)MS were proposed as an advantageous alternative to LC-MS analysis when the fast (4 min/sample) screening of AGS for their SAC content is intended, as in applications aimed at high-throughput quality control or standardization. Finally, the results gathered by the application of these two methodologies evidenced the highly variable composition of commercial AGS, as well as the identification of a number of potential composition frauds affecting their genuineness and benefits on health. The objective of this investigation was: (i) to develop a model that supports sustainable product development, considering the quality aspect and the environmental impact in the product life cycle, and (ii) to establish a framework to select the proportion of the share of these aspects during product development decisions. This research concentrates on achieving products that meet customer demand and have environmentally friendly life cycles. It also supports the implementation of design activities at an early stage of product development, positioning the share of quality in relation to environmental impact. The model is based on creating hypothetical prototypes of current products, and this approach concentrated on aggregating the quality (customer satisfaction) with life cycle environmental impacts (as in ISO 14040). The model was developed in five main stages, including: (i) defining product prototypes according to the modifications of quality criteria most desired by customers, (ii) assessing the quality of prototypes according to the Q quality index, (iii) prospective assessment of the environmental impacts of the life cycles of prototypes according to the LCA environmental index, (iv) methodical integration of the above-mentioned indicators into one quality and environmental indicator QLCA, and (v) analysis of possible production solutions and setting the direction of product development, taking into account both quality and environmental aspects. This research was extended with a sensitivity analysis of the QLCA indicator, after which a framework for selecting the proportion of the Q and LCA indicator's share in product development decisions was established. The originality of this research is the ability of the developed model to facilitate eco-innovative product design and improvements while also selecting the share of qualitative and environmental aspects needed to develop sustainable products. The results provide a dynamic and effective tool for manufacturing companies; mainly designers and managers during qualitative and environmental prototyping of products commonly used by customers. Water quality in rural areas of developing countries is a notable problem. In this article, drinking water quality from eleven villages in the Pavlodar and the Akmola region of Kazakhstan was analyzed. Questionnaires of village respondents and chemical components of drinking water were analyzed to identify the quality of drinking water. In each of the villages, the chemical content varied depending on the source of drinking water. In the rural Pavlodar region, we observed that some cations and anions exceed the MPC. Respondents' perceptions of water quality are associated with water sources and physical components. For example, respondents' satisfaction by inside tap of central water systems' water was high, the answers of those whose water source was private wells showed more mixed satisfaction levels. The drinking water physical quality indicators are closely related to water mineralization and general hardness. The total microbial count of drinking water has a significant relationship with respondents' complaints about unpleasant taste, odor, and salinity. The relationship between perceived and physical water quality is a critical aspect of water resource management. By bridging the gap between scientific assessments and public perceptions, we can enhance public health, build trust in water management systems, and promote sustainability of water use. Backround: The utilization of high-quality water in agriculture is increasingly constrained by climate change, affecting availability, quality, and distribution due to altered precipitation patterns, increased evaporation, extreme weather events, and rising salinity levels. Salinity significantly challenges salt-sensitive vegetables like lettuce, particularly in a greenhouse. Hydroponics water quality ensures nutrient solution stability, enhances nutrient uptake, prevents contamination, regulates pH and electrical conductivity, and maintains system components. This study aimed to mitigate salt-induced damage in lettuce grown via the floating culture method under 50 mM NaCl salinity by applying biostimulants. Results: We examined lettuce's physiological, biochemical, and agronomical responses to salt stress after applying biostimulants such as amino acids, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), fulvic acid, and chitosan. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse with a randomized complete block design, and each treatment was replicated four times. Biostimulant applications alleviated salt's detrimental effects on plant weight, height, leaf number, and leaf area. Yield increases under 50 mM NaCl were 75%, 51%, 31%, 34%, and 33% using vermicompost, PGPR, fulvic acid, amino acid, and chitosan, respectively. Biostimulants improved stomatal conductance (58–189%), chlorophyll content (4–10%), nutrient uptake (15–109%), and water status (9–107%). They also reduced MDA content by 26–42%. PGPR (1.0 ml L‒1), vermicompost (2 ml L‒1), and fulvic acid (40 mg L‒1) were particularly effective, enhancing growth, yield, phenol, and mineral content while reducing nitrate levels under saline conditions. Conclusions: Biostimulants activated antioxidative defense systems, offering a sustainable, cost-effective solution for mitigating salt stress in hydroponic lettuce cultivation. Fresh-cut Chinese water chestnuts (CWCs) are susceptible to yellowing and browning during storage due to mechanical damage and the loss of protective outer skin, adversely affecting their marketability and shelf life. Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) is currently extensively used for food preservation, but it has not been used in Chinese water chestnuts. This study investigated the effect of MeJA treatment on the quality of fresh-cut CWCs. Fresh-cut CWCs immersed in 20 μM MeJA solution for 10 min and stored at 10°C for 5 d effectively delayed the yellowing process, reduced the respiration rate, and minimized the weight and soluble solids loss during storage. In addition, MeJA treatment induced the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), which improved the antioxidant capacity of fresh-cut CWCs and inhibited the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Meanwhile, MeJA treatment inhibited the activities of phenylalanine aminotransferase (PAL), polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and peroxidase (POD). The results of quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) showed that MeJA down-regulated the expression of CwCHS1, CwCHS2, CwCHS3 and CwCHI2 in freshly cut CWCs and inhibited the accumulation of flavonoids, thus delaying the surface discoloration of freshly cut CWCs. Introduction Methods Results Conclusions As the rural–urban cancer mortality gap widens, centering care around the needs of rural patients presents an opportunity to advance equity. One barrier to delivering patient‐centered care at rural hospitals stems from limited analytic capacity to leverage data and monitor patient outcomes. This case study describes the experience of a public health cancer surveillance system aiming to fill this gap within the context of a rural cancer network.To support the implementation of a novel network model intervention in Iowa, the Iowa Cancer Registry began generating hospital‐specific and catchment area reports. Then, the Iowa Cancer Registry supported adapting the network model to fit the context of Iowa's cancer care delivery system by performing data monitoring and reporting functions. Informed by a gap analysis, the Iowa Cancer Registry then identified which quality accreditation standards could be achieved with public health surveillance data and analytic support.The network intervention in Iowa supported 5 rural cancer centers across the state, each concurrently pursuing quality accreditation standards. The Iowa Cancer Registry's hospital and catchment‐specific reports illuminated the cancer burden and needs of rural cancer centers within the network. Our team identified 19 (of the 36 total) quality standards that can be supported by public health surveillance functions typically performed by the registry. These standards encompassed data‐driven quality improvement, patient monitoring, and reporting guideline‐concordant care standards.As rural hospitals continue to face resource constraints, multisectoral efforts informed by data from centralized public health surveillance systems can promote quality improvement initiatives across rural communities. While our work remains preliminary, we predict that analytic support provided by the Iowa Cancer Registry will enable the rural network hospitals to focus their capacity toward developing the infrastructure necessary to deliver high‐quality care and serve the unique needs of rural cancer patients. Resistance spot welding (RSW) is considered a preferred technique for joining metal parts in various industries, mainly for its efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The mechanical properties of spot welds are pivotal in ensuring structural integrity and overall assembly performance. In this work, the quality attributes of resistance spot welding, such as both nugget and corona bond sizes, are assessed by analyzing the thermal behavior of the joint using a physical information neural network (PINN). Starting from the thermal signal phase gradient and amplitude gradient maps, a convolutional neural network (CNN) estimates the size of nuggets and corona bonds. The CNN architecture is based on the Inception V3 architecture, a state-of-the-art neural network that excels in image recognition tasks. Background: Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, a significant and widely used medicinal herb, is also recognized in the US Pharmacopoeia as a dietary supplement. However, the decline in yield and quality limits its further development as a traditional herbal medicine. Therefore, a deeper understanding of how synthetic communities (SynCom) affect the quality and yield of S. miltiorrhiza and the underlying mechanisms is necessary. Results: In this study, we selected S. miltiorrhiza as the research subject and designed two synthetic communities (SynCom 1 and SynCom 2) using five endophytic fungi without significantly growth-promoting effect. We conducted both greenhouse and field experiments to investigate their impact on the yield and quality of the herbal plants. Greenhouse experiments confirmed that SynCom 1 significantly increased the biomass of S. miltiorrhiza, whereas SynCom 2 had the opposite effect. Field experiments further demonstrated that the application of SynCom 1 promoted photosynthesis and enhanced carbon and nitrogen metabolism, steady and markedly promoted plant growth, and thus increased S. miltiorrhiza yield compared to the uninoculated. In contrast, SynCom 2 inhibited yield but increased the content of the main active components. Un-targeted metabolomics analysis showed that SynCom 1 mainly promoted tricarboxylic acid cycle and nitrogen assimilation process to increase yield, and SynCom 2 mainly increase substrate content in the salvianolic acid and tanshinone synthesis pathways to improve quality. Conclusion: These beneficial qualities exhibited by SynComs composed of fungi without apparent growth-promoting abilities represent an untapped resource that can be leveraged to enhance crop productivity. This opens up new research avenues for precision manipulation of plant microbiomes. In this study, the effect of tapioca starch (TP) on mortar was evaluated by incorporating TP into the mortar mixture. The evaluation involved analyzing the mortar's quality characteristics, performance, and fundamental quality improvements. The addition of TP resulted in a decrease in flow, which was attributed to increased viscosity. Specifically, a 10% reduction in flow was observed with a 0.025% increase in TP content. After 28 days, the impact of TP on the compressive strength of the mortar remained consistent, regardless of the TP amount. However, within the first 3 days, higher TP content accelerated strength development, with early compressive strength increasing by up to 20% at a 0.050% TP level. Salmon, rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids, has a short shelf life of 1 to 3 days when stored at 2 to 8 °C. Freezing, used for long-term preservation, often results in ice crystal formation. Ice crystals can cause structural damage, leading to cell wall rupture, which can affect the texture and cause nutrient loss. Ultimately, this process reduces the overall quality of the salmon. Supercooling, which cools food below its freezing temperature without forming ice crystals, offers an alternative. This study investigated the effects of oscillating magnetic fields (OMFs) and pulsed electric fields (PEFs) on ice crystal formation during salmon supercooling. The results showed that using OMFs and PEFs in supercooling reduced the storage temperature of salmon, maintaining a similar thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) value to that of frozen and refrigerated samples. There was no significant difference in meat color between the fresh and frozen samples, and drip loss weight was comparable between the fresh and supercooled samples. The microbiological counts were the lowest in the supercooled samples compared to the frozen and refrigerated ones. To explore the influence of raw materials from different cultivars on the quality of Sichuan dark tea, the raw materials of 4 tea cultivars were used in this study. The main chemicals and aroma components were analyzed by sensory evaluation, chemical analysis and gas chromato graphy-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) . The main components of Sichuan dark teas made from different tea cultivars were significantly different. The contents of water extract, tea polyphenols, catechins and caffeine of Sichuan dark teas from 'Zijuan' were the highest, which were 49.45%, 18.54%, 4.77%, and 4.21%, respectively, followed by Sichuan dark tea processed with 'Huangjinya' cultivar, all of them were significantly (P<0.05) higher than the Sichuan dark tea processed with 'Fuding Dabai' and 'Baiye 1'. The contents of L-asparagine, L-theanine, aspartic acid and glutamic acid were the highest of Sichuan dark teas from 'Huangjinya', which were 115.78, 279.86, 154.47, 70.76 mg/100 g, respectively, significantly (P<0.05) higher than Sichuan dark tea processed with other cultivars. Aroma analysis showed that main aroma components were alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, hydrocarbons and esters, accounting for more than 80% of the total aroma. The similarity rate of aroma between 'Fuding Dabai' and 'Baiye 1' was 0.98, and that of 'Huangjinya' and 'Zijuan' was 0.99. The Sichuan dark tea processed with the 'Baiye 1' had floral fragrance, and the Sichuan dark tea processed with the 'Zijuan' had ''stale flavor''. Sensory quality analysis showed that the comprehensive qualities of Sichuan dark teas from 'Fuding Dabai','Baiye 1' and 'Huangjinya' were the better, with a score of more than 82, while the Sichuan dark tea from 'Zijuan' had the lowest score. The Sichuan dark tea processed with 'Huangjinya' materials was rich in substances and had good comprehensive quality. The Sichuan dark tea processed with 'Baiye 1' material had floral fragrance, which could be used as a variety for processing advanced special Sichuan dark tea. The Sichuan dark tea processed with 'Zijuan' materials had high content of water extracts and tea polyphenols, with ''stale flavor''. It was suitable for blending and processing with other cultivars of low polyphenol content, and could be used as a blending variety for dark tea products with ''stale flavor''. In order to solve the problems of short shelf life of refrigerated Micropterus salmoides and the deterioration of quality during refrigerated storage, three preservatives including trehalose (Tre), ginger extract (GE) and Nisin were selected for single factor experiment. L9(34) orthogonal experiment was used to optimize the ratio of the compound preservative. The total viable count (TVC), pH, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) content, sensory evaluation, water holding capacity, moisture distribution, texture properties and myofibrillar protein (MP) oxidation stability indexes of Micropterus salmoides during refrigerated storage were measured with the optimal ratio of the compound preservative. The optimal ratio of the compound preservative (3.0% Tre, 0.06% GE and 0.06% Nisin) was obtained by single factor experiment and orthogonal experiment. The results showed that on the 8th day of refrigeration, the logarithm of TVC of control group (CK group) was 6.01, which exceeded the specified limit of spoilage. At the 16th day of storage, the logarithm of TVC of EG2 group was still lower than 6.00, the content of TVB-N was not more than 20 mg/100 g and the pH was less than 7.20. Compared with CK group, free water content in compound preservative groups (EG1 group and EG2 group (that was preferred group)) were significantly decreased, water holding capacity were significantly increased (P<0.05), and the hardness, chewiness and sensory scores of Micropterus salmoides were better than CK group. The related indexes of MP oxidation stability showed that the total sulfhydryl content and Ca2+-ATPase activity in compound preservative groups (EG1 group and EG2 group (that was preferred group)) were significantly higher than those in CK group (P<0.05), while the surface hydrophobicity and carbonyl group content were significantly lower than those in CK group (P<0.05), meanwhile, the protective effect of EG2 group on the oxidation stability of MP was better than that of EG1 group. The correlation analysis showed that there was significant correlation (P<0.01) among the indexes of Micropterus salmoides fillets treated with compound preservatives. Comprehensive analysis showed that the quality deterioration of refrigerated Micropterus salmoides could be effectively delayed and the MP oxidation of refrigerated Micropterus salmoides could be significantly inhibited, among which the optimal ratio group (EG2 group) had the best comprehensive effect. In the healthcare field, the effective implementation of clinical protocols is crucial to ensuring patient safety and well-being. In this context, this study evaluates nurses' adherence to the maintenance and replacement protocol of peripheral venous catheters (PVCs) in a university hospital in Spain, examining the impact of compliance with the protocol on the loss of PVCs and on patient safety in addition to analyzing the related costs. A retrospective observational study was conducted with 590 patients who were admitted in 2018 and 2019. The chi-square test or Fisher's exact test, as appropriate, was used to see the association between the study variables; with the dependent variable being the loss of PVCs (including, as a dependent variable, the loss of PVCs before 48 h). The patients' electronic and physical medical records were reviewed to analyze nursing interventions related to the management of PVCs. A total of 24% of patients experienced PVC loss within the first 24 h after insertion. Failure to comply with the protocol resulted in 80% more catheter loss and increased the cost of cannulation by 46.84%. Low compliance with PVC care protocols significantly increases the risk of catheter loss, suggesting the need for increased training and strict protocol implementation. The findings emphasize the critical role of nursing in ensuring patient safety through adherence to evidence-based protocols. This article focuses on the testing and evaluation of gas protective masks based on subjective aspects, since most studies focus on objective indicators without ascertaining the opinions of those who use gas protective masks. Three types of modern anti-gas protective masks were selected for testing. Multi-criteria decision making and the expert method were used to develop the criteria. Mathematical relationships were used to evaluate the test results. For the purpose of testing, a methodological procedure was developed that integrates the established subjective criteria. The test results identified the key parameters in evaluating gas protection masks; at the same time, the results pointed out the possible shortcomings of the OM-90 anti-gas protective mask and its use in the civilian sector. By evaluating the data, the most appropriate gas protective mask was selected that best met the subjective criteria. The study provides insightful findings for decision support in the field of civil protection material but also protective equipment of rescue units. It is the subjective assessment that is essential in a comprehensive evaluation of the quality of gas protective masks, as the user himself often perceives the quality of the product differently from the manufacturer. Background: This study aimed to comparatively evaluate the quality and physicochemical bioequivalence of commercially available brands of hydrochlorothiazide (HCT) tablets in community pharmacies in Dessie town, Northeast Ethiopia. Methods: Experimental cross-sectional study design was applied using pharmacopeia and non-pharmacopeia methods. The difference (f1) and similarity (f2) factors were calculated to assess the in vitro bioequivalence of generic products with the comparator. Result: The study results revealed that all investigated brands contained the required active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). The friability test results were concordant with the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) (<1%) for eight brands; however, brand NF3 (1.36%) failed to pass the specification limit. The hardness levels of the brands NF3 (24.20 ± 7.32 N), NF5 (32.19 ± 4.78 N), and NF9 (35.02 ± 3.12 N) were below the specification limit (39.23 N, USP 2019). The weight variation results of all generic products complied with the USP specification requirement. In the quantitative assay results, the minimum and maximum API contents were 97.4 ± 0.02 (NF6) and 105.8 ± 0.02 (NF8), respectively, which are within the limit specified by the USP (90%-110%). Similarly, all samples met the disintegration time limit (i.e., ≤30 min) and drug-releasing tolerance limit (API released more than 60% within 60 min) requirements. The f2 values were >50, and the f1 values were <15 for all sampled brands. Conclusion: The majority of the sampled brands of HCT tablets met the quality requirements as per USP official test specifications. Jojoba wax is gaining popularity among cosmetics consumers for its skin wound healing and rejuvenation bioactivities, attributed to collagen and hyaluronic acid synthesis. However, information regarding wax phytochemical composition and quality parameters, as well as effect of cultivation practices, and fertilization in particular, on wax quality is limited. The aim of the current work was to study the effect of nitrogen (N) availability to jojoba plants on wax phytochemical composition and beneficial skin-related contents. For this, wax quality from a six-year fertilization experiment with five N application levels was evaluated. The chemical parameters included antioxidant activity, free fatty acid, total tocopherol, total phytosterol and oxidative stability, as well as fatty acid and fatty alcohol profile. Our results reveal that themajority of wax quality traits were affected by N fertilization level, either positively or negatively. Interestingly, while fatty acids were unaffected, fatty alcohol composition was significantly altered by N level. Additionally, fruit load also largely affected wax quality, and, due to jojoba's biennial alternate bearing cycles, harvest year significantly affected all measured parameters. Results shed light on the effects of N application on various biochemical constituents of jojoba wax, and imply that N availability should be considered part of the entire agricultural management plan to enhance wax quality. Trichoderma afroharzianum, a ubiquitous soil-borne fungus found on plant roots and decaying residues, displays competitive traits and mycoparasitic behavior against diverse microorganisms. Selected strains of this fungus are known in agriculture for their beneficial effects on plant growth and as bio-fungicides. However, recent findings have pinpointed Trichoderma afroharzianum as the causal agent behind maize ear rot disease in Europe since 2018, notably impacting maize cobs in Germany, France, and Italy. This study aims to evaluate the severity of Trichoderma ear rot disease on maize fresh matter content and specific quality parameters under semi-field conditions. Two distinct maize varieties were artificially inoculated with a pathogenic Trichoderma isolate at the flowering stage using needle pin or silk channel methods. Disease severity was assessed visually at the time of harvest based on the percentage of infected kernels according to EPPO Guidelines (PP 1/285). Fresh matter content and quality parameters such as alpha-amylase activity, C/N ratio, water, and sugar content were analyzed. Results showed that needle pin inoculation led to higher disease severity (60%) compared to silk channel inoculation (39%). Cob weight decreased significantly at the highest disease severity level by up to 50% compared to control plants. In both varieties, alpha-amylase activity increased significantly with higher Trichoderma disease severity, resulting in starch degradation and increased glucose release. The germination rate was severely affected by the infection, with only 22% of grains germinating, and the seedlings showed shortened and deformed growth. This is the first report on Trichoderma ear rot infection and its effect on fresh matter content and quality parameters in maize after artificial inoculation under field conditions.
