Volcanic tuffs rich in chabazite zeolites have been extensively examined for their potential to enhance soil properties and increase fertilizer efficiency, both in their natural state and when enriched with nitrogen (N). However, there is a scarcity of data regarding their utilization in acidic sandy soil, particularly when used alongside organic fertilizers. This paper presents the findings of a 50-day laboratory incubation study that investigated the dynamics of N pools in an acidic sandy-loam agricultural soil treated with various N sources. These sources included urea, N-enriched chabazite zeolite tuff, and pelleted composted manure applied at a rate of 170 kg N/ha. Additionally, the N sources were tested in combination with chabazite zeolite tuff mixed into the soil to assess its role as a soil conditioner. The results revealed distinct behaviours among the tested N sources, primarily impacting soil pH and N dynamics. Soil fertilized with manure exhibited slow N mineralization, whereas N-enriched zeolite displayed a more balanced behaviour concerning net NO3−-N production and NH4+-N consumption. Both N-enriched zeolite and urea temporarily altered the soil pH, resembling a "liming" effect, while pelleted manure facilitated a prolonged shift towards neutral pH values. Considering the water adsorption capacity of zeolite minerals, caution is advised when adjusting water content and employing combustion methods to measure soil organic matter in zeolite-treated soil to avoid potential inaccuracies. In summary, N-enriched chabazite zeolite tuff emerged as a valuable N source in acidic sandy-loam soil, offering a promising alternative to synthetic fertilizers and showcasing a sustainable means of N recycling. Animal excretion provides nutrients for primary productivity and can be a crucial component of ecosystem nutrient cycling. The concentrations of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) in an animal's excretion are strongly influenced by the C:N:P stoichiometry (molar ratios) of its body and of the food it eats. We measured the C:N:P ratios of quagga mussel (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) tissues and excreta and of seston across wide environmental and spatial gradients in the upper Laurentian Great Lakes. We then investigated how mussel excretion rates were impacted by stoichiometric mismatch—the difference between the C:P ratios of mussel tissues and the C:P ratios their food. Quagga mussel internal C:N:P stoichiometry varied significantly across sites and seasons, driven primarily by changes in tissue P concentrations. When mussel tissues had substantially lower C:P ratios than seston (that is, strong stoichiometric mismatch), mussels excreted significantly less N and P relative to C. Excretion C:N ratios varied by nearly threefold, while C:P ratios varied by tenfold. The effect of the stoichiometric mismatch on excretion stoichiometry was more dramatic in the spring, when mussels had higher tissue P concentrations, than in the summer. This suggests seasonality in mussel P demand. Our results challenge the assumption of strict internal homeostasis in consumers and demonstrate that food and tissue stoichiometry need to be considered to predict consumer excretion stoichiometry. These findings help to better understand the impact of consumer-driven nutrient cycling in aquatic environments and quagga mussel contributions to the nutrient budgets of invaded ecosystems. Incorporating a variety of microalgae into wastewater treatment is considered an economically viable and environmentally sound strategy. The present work assessed the growth characteristics of Chlorella sorokiniana during cultivation in balanced synthetic media and domestic wastewater. Increasing the NH4+–N concentration to 360 mg L−1 and adding extra PO43−–P and SO42−–S (up to 80 and 36 mg L−1, respectively) contributed to an increase in the total biomass levels (5.7–5.9 g L−1) during the cultivation of C. sorokiniana in synthetic media. Under these conditions, the maximum concentrations of chlorophylls and carotenoids were 180 ± 7.5 and 26 ± 1.4 mg L−1, respectively. Furthermore, when studying three types of domestic wastewaters, it was noted that only one wastewater contributed to the productive growth of C. sorokiniana, but all wastewaters stimulated an increased accumulation of protein. Finally, the alga, when growing in optimal unsterilized wastewater, showed a maximum specific growth rate of 0.73 day−1, a biomass productivity of 0.21 g L−1 day−1, and 100% NH4+–N removal. These results demonstrate that the tested alga actively adapts to changes in the composition of the growth medium and accumulates high levels of protein in systems with poor-quality water. Nutrient availability plays a crucial role in microalgae growth in domestic wastewater. In this study, we investigated the impact of different nitrogen and phosphorus ratios (5:1, 10:1, and 20:1, m∙m−1), and the addition of inorganic carbon on microalgae growth and nutrient uptake from domestic wastewater. Microalgae biomass achieved values ranging from 0.54 to 1.41 g·L−1. The cultivation process had maximum removal efficiencies of 83.7% for soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD), 74.0% for total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), and 100.0% for ammonia (NH3) and orthophosphate (PO43−). All the NH3 and PO43− concentrations from domestic wastewater without supplementation were completely removed on the fourth day of cultivation. Moreover, no significant differences in microalgae growth, and NH3 and PO43− removals were observed between the conditions with and without nutrient supplementation on the fourth day of cultivation. This study has shown the feasibility of growing microalgae in domestic wastewater without any nutritional supplementation. Further investigations are required to check the long-term performance, energy requirements, and economic viability of this system for wastewater treatment and the production of nutrient-rich biomass for agricultural applications. The exchange of material and individuals between neighboring food webs is ubiquitous and affects ecosystem functioning. Here, we explore animal foraging movement between adjacent, heterogeneous habitats and its effect on a suite of interconnected ecosystem functions. Combining dynamic food web models with nutrient‐recycling models, we study foraging across habitats that differ in fertility and plant diversity. We found that net foraging movement flowed from high to low fertility or high to low diversity and boosted stocks and flows across the whole loop of ecosystem functions, including biomass, detritus, and nutrients, in the recipient habitat. Contrary to common assumptions, however, the largest flows were often between the highest and intermediate fertility habitats rather than highest and lowest. The effect of consumer influx on ecosystem functions was similar to the effect of increasing fertility. Unlike fertility, however, consumer influx caused a shift toward highly predator‐dominated biomass distributions, especially in habitats that were unable to support predators in the absence of consumer foraging. This shift resulted from both direct and indirect effects propagated through the interconnected ecosystem functions. Only by considering both stocks and fluxes across the whole loop of ecosystem functions do we uncover the mechanisms driving our results. In conclusion, the outcome of animal foraging movements will differ from that of dispersal and diffusion. Together we show how considering active types of animal movement and the interconnectedness of ecosystem functions can aid our understanding of the patchy landscapes of the Anthropocene. Two nutrient–phytoplankton–zooplankton (NZP) models for a closed ecosystem that incorporates a delay in nutrient recycling, obtained using the gamma distribution function with one or two degrees of freedom, are analysed. The models are described by systems of ordinary differential equations of four and five dimensions. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the mean delay of the distribution and the total nutrients affect the stability of the equilibrium solutions. Local stability theory and bifurcation theory are used to determine the long-time dynamics of the models. It is found that both models exhibit comparable qualitative dynamics. There are a maximum of three equilibrium points in each of the two models, and at most one of them is locally asymptotically stable. The change of stability from one equilibrium to another takes place through a transcritical bifurcation. In some hypotheses on the functional response, the nutrient–phytoplankton–zooplankton equilibrium loses stability via a supercritical Hopf bifurcation, causing the apparition of a stable limit cycle. The way in which the results are consistent with prior research and how they extend them is discussed. A total of twenty mixtures of weed, B-Lac and molasses were prepared in order to evaluate an accelerated liquid fertilizer (ALF) based on these plants. A mixture of 85% weed: water (1:1), 10% molasses and 5% BLac showed the best characteristics and was reproduced at a pilot scale. ALF was applied to lettuce using the following treatments: one foliar application per week of 10 mL L-1 (FA1), two foliar applications per week of 10 mL L-1 (FA2), one drench application of 50 mL L-1 every week (DA1), a drench application of 50 mL L-1 every two weeks (DA2) and a control without application (CWA). The variables evaluated were total yield, commercial yield, fresh weight, height, head diameter, percentage of dry matter and the concentration of foliar nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. The mixtures in the laboratory and pilot phase were evaluated in a completely randomized design. The field phase was assessed in a completely randomized block design with five treatments and four replications. No significant differences were found between the treatments, except in the percentage of dry matter and potassium content, where FA2 showed the best results (2.35% and 541 mg plant-1, respectively). The highest total yield (26.4 t ha-1) and commercial (24.11 t ha-1) were achieved with DA2; however, the nutritional content was lower than that in the other treatments. Using homolactic fermentation it was possible to recycle weeds and produce ALF, which has potential as a biofertilizer according to its chemical characterization and effects shown on lettuce cultivation. Maize is one of the most important cereals in the world. It is a crop demanding in nitrogen. Therefore, alternative sources of fertilization bring agronomic, environmental and economic benefits. The objective of this study was to evaluate the biomass and productivity of maize fertigated with wastewater from swine and fish farming in different dilutions. The soil used is classified as Dystroferric Red Latosol, Cerrado phase, with clayey texture. The experimental design used was randomized blocks in 2 × 4 split plots with three replications. The treatments consisted of two sources of wastewater (fish farming and swine farming) diluted with the recommended dose of wastewater + 0, 25, 50 and 75% of its volume in water. The accumulation of dry mass (leaf, stalk and aerial parts) was evaluated at 30, 60, 90 and 110 days after sowing. The evaluation of yield variables (number of grain rows, number of grains per row, grain sizes, grain dry weight, gran yield and harvest index) occurred at 130 days after sowing. The largest accumulation of dry biomass at the end of the maize cycle and evaluated productivity variables were obtained with the application of swine farming wastewater. Wastewater from fish farming applied via an irrigation system without dilution (0%) is the most suitable for obtaining the productivity of corn grains. Sustainable food production has become increasingly important. Soilless cultivation systems offer several advantages, such as water and nutrient use efficiency, and can be implemented where traditional agriculture is impossible. Bioponic systems use locally or regionally available nutrient sources from organic waste streams (either fluid or solid) and can thus contribute to closing nutrient cycles locally. Bioponics harnesses the metabolic processes of microorganisms which release nutrients from organic matter. This study aimed to set up a bioponic system, by using biogas digestate concentrate and biochar as nutrient sources, and promoting nutrient release from the organic sources by including a biofilter in the system. The development of water quality, plant growth, and quality was monitored extensively. In addition, the influence of either the fungal biocontrol agent Trichoderma atrobrunneum or UV-C treatment of the nutrient solution on plant health and growth was investigated. Three cultivation cycles with Lactuca sativa ("HAWKING" Salanova®) in bioponic (BP), hydroponic (HP), and soil (SO) cultivation were performed. The study showed that healthy lettuces could be produced in BP systems, using a biogas digestate concentrate and biochar as nutrient sources, despite salt accumulation in the nutrient solution. In plant sap analyses, lettuces cultivated in BP systems contained less nitrate but more ammonium and chloride. The yield of the lettuces grown in the BP systems was intermediate, compared to the HP and the SO. The fungus, T. atrobrunneum, strain, T720, survived in soil and soilless cultivation systems. Compared to the HP and the SO systems, the shoot height of lettuces grown in the BP system, with the application of Trichoderma, was significantly increased. In SO systems with Trichoderma application, a significantly higher chlorophyll and flavonoid content, but significantly lower shoot height was observed. The fresh weight of lettuce roots was significantly higher in HP systems with Trichoderma treatment. Cultivating plants by using organic waste streams requires commitment and experience from producers. In BP systems, a biofilter (either within the system or externally, to increase nutrient levels) can help to rapidly convert the ammonium-rich fertilizer to plant-available nutrients. Unlike conventional HP systems, in BP systems, nutrients are released slowly over time, requiring close monitoring and adjustments. In conclusion, healthy lettuces for human consumption can be produced in BP systems, and the application of the biocontrol agent used has some beneficial influence on plant growth. This study focuses on the feasibility of the dry anaerobic digestion of solid agricultural biomass for efficient renewable-energy production and nutrient recycling. Methane production and the amount of nitrogen in the digestates were measured in pilot- and farm-scale leach-bed reactors. In the pilot scale, with a digestion time of 133 days, the methane production of a mixture of whole crop fava bean and horse manure corresponded to 94% and 116%, respectively, of the methane potentials of the solid substrates. The mono-digestion of fava beans resulted in relatively low methane production (production/potential ratios of 59% and 57%). In two full-scale experiments, the methane production of mixtures of clover-grass silage, chicken manure, and horse manure corresponded to 108% and 100% of their respective methane potentials with digestion times of 117 and 185 days. In co-digestion, the production/potential ratios were similar in the pilot and farm experiments. High nitrogen loss was observed in the farm scale when the digestate was stored in a stack covered with a tarpaulin during summertime. Thus, although the technology seems promising, attention needs to be paid to management practices to minimise nitrogen losses and greenhouse gas emissions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microalgae are capable of assimilating nutrients from wastewater (WW), producing clean water and biomass rich in bioactive compounds that need to be recovered from inside the microalgal cell. This work investigated subcritical water (SW) extraction to collect high-value compounds from the microalga Tetradesmus obliquus after treating poultry WW. The treatment efficiency was evaluated in terms of total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), phosphate, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and metals. T. obliquus was able to remove 77% TKN, 50% phosphate, 84% COD, and metals (48–89%) within legislation values. SW extraction was performed at 170 °C and 30 bar for 10 min. SW allowed the extraction of total phenols (1.073 mg GAE/mL extract) and total flavonoids (0.111 mg CAT/mL extract) with high antioxidant activity (IC50 value, 7.18 µg/mL). The microalga was shown to be a source of organic compounds of commercial value (e.g., squalene). Finally, the SW conditions allowed the removal of pathogens and metals in the extracts and residues to values in accordance with legislation, assuring their safety for feed or agriculture applications. Leaf decay in seagrasses is enhanced in some seasons since large green senescent beach-cast seagrass leaves are frequently recorded during autumn and winter seasons. Here, we explore if senescence is operating in seagrass leaf decay or if hydrodynamic stress is responsible for the seasonal leaf abscission. A seasonal study on the temperate seagrass Cymodocea nodosa was carried out in four locations with contrasting hydrodynamic regimes. The morphological, biomechanical and material properties of C. nodosa were measured. The force required to break the ligule was always lower than that required to break the blade. This could be considered an adaptive strategy to reduce acute drag forces and thus lessen the chance of plant uprooting. The absolute force needed to dislodge the blade at the ligule level varied with season and location, with the lowest forces recorded in autumn. This may indicate that senescence is operating in this species. On the other hand, the minimum estimated failure velocities for leaf abscission were also recorded in autumn. Consequently, this may cause the premature shedding of leaves in this season before the senescence process has finished and can probably explain the occurrence of green beach-cast seagrass leaves usually found during autumn and winter. A stochastic nutrient–phytoplankton–zooplankton model with instantaneous nutrient recycling is proposed and analyzed in this paper. When the nutrient uptake function and the grazing function are linear and the ingested phytoplankton is completely absorbed by the zooplankton, we establish two stochastic thresholds R 0 S and R 1 S , which completely determine the persistence and extinction of the plankton. That is, if R 0 S < 1 , both the phytoplankton and the zooplankton eventually are eliminated; if R 0 S > 1 and R 1 S < 1 , the phytoplankton is persistent in mean but the zooplankton is extinct; while for R 1 S > 1 , the entire system is persistent in mean. Furthermore, sufficient criteria for the existence of ergodic stationary distribution of the model are obtained and the persistent levels of the plankton are estimated. Numeric simulations are carried out to illustrate the theoretical results and to conclude our study. Our results suggest that environmental noise may cause the local bloom of phytoplankton, which surprisingly can be used to explain the formation of algal blooms to some extent. Moreover, we find that the nonlinear nutrient uptake function and grazing function may take credit for the periodic succession of blooms regardless of whether they are in the absence or presence of the environmental noises. Miscanthus, a C4 perennial rhizomatous grass, is capable of growing in varied climates and soil types in Europe, including on marginal lands. It can produce high yields with low nutrient inputs when harvested after complete senescence. Senescence induction and rate depend on complex genetic, environmental, and management interactions. To explore these interactions, we analysed four miscanthus hybrids (two novel seed‐based hybrids, GRC 3 [Miscanthus sinensis × sinensis] and GRC 14 [M. sacchariflorus × sinensis]; GRC 15, a novel M. sacchariflorus × sinensis clone; and GRC 9, a standard Miscanthus × giganteus clone) in Italy, Croatia, Germany and the UK. Over all trial locations and hybrids, the average aboveground biomass of the 3‐year‐old stands in August 2020 was 15 t DM ha−1 with nutrient contents of 7.6 mg N g−1 and 14.6 mg K g−1. As expected, delaying the harvest until spring reduced overall yield and nutrient contents (12 t DM ha−1, 3.3 mg N g−1, and 5.5 mg K g−1). At lower latitudes, the late‐ripening M. sacchariflorus × sinensis GRC 14 and GRC 15 combined high yields with low nutrient contents. At the most elevated latitude location (UK), the early‐ripening M. sinensis × sinensis combined high biomass yields with low nutrient offtakes. The clonal Miscanthus × giganteus with intermediate flowering and senescence attained similar low nutrient contents by spring harvest at all four locations. Seasonal changes in yield and nutrient levels analysed in this study provide: (1) a first step towards recommending hybrids for specific locations and end uses in Europe; (2) crucial data for determination of harvest time and practical steps in the valorization of biomass; and (3) key sustainability data for life cycle assessments. Identification of trade‐offs resulting from genetic × environment × management interactions is critical for increasing sustainable biomass supply from miscanthus grown on marginal lands. Global increase in aquaculture production has created a need to reduce its environmental impacts. Nutrients could be recycled especially at land-based recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) by cultivating green microalgae in aquaculture effluent. However, microalgae are difficult to harvest. As a multi-trophic solution, mussels could be used in harvesting microalgae. We tested three European freshwater mussels (duck mussel Anodonta anatina, swan mussel A. cygnea, and swollen river mussel Unio tumidus) for filtering two common green microalgae (Monoraphidium griffithii and Selenastrum sp.) grown in RAS effluent. Mussels decreased microalgal concentrations in the tanks 42–83% over three consecutive trials. Algal concentrations at the end of each trial were lowest for both microalgae in tanks containing Anodonta mussels. Clearance rates were higher for Anodonta mussels than for U. tumidus. Mussels biodeposited more microalgae to tank bottoms when M. griffithii was filtered. Ammonium concentration decreased or did not change in tanks with M. griffithii, but increased in tanks containing Selenastrum sp. These results suggest that of the tested species Anodonta mussels and M. griffithii show best potential for RAS effluent bioremediation application. The objective of this review was to provide quantitative insights into algal growth and nutrient removal in anaerobic digestate. To synthesize the relevant literature, a meta-analysis was conducted using data from 58 articles to elucidate key factors that impact algal biomass productivity and nutrient removal from anaerobic digestate. On average, algal biomass productivity in anaerobic digestate was significantly lower than that in synthetic control media (p < 0.05) but large variation in productivity was observed. A mixed-effects multiple regression model across study revealed that biological or chemical pretreatment of digestate significantly increase productivity (p < 0.001). In contrast, the commonly used practice of digestate dilution was not a significant factor in the model. High initial total ammonia nitrogen suppressed algal growth (p = 0.036) whereas initial total phosphorus concentration, digestate sterilization, CO 2 supplementation, and temperature were not statistically significant factors. Higher growth corresponded with significantly higher NH 4 –N and phosphorus removal with a linear relationship of 6.4 mg NH 4 –N and 0.73 mg P removed per 100 mg of algal biomass growth (p < 0.001). The literature suggests that suboptimal algal growth in anaerobic digestate could be due to factors such as turbidity, high free ammonia, and residual organic compounds. This analysis shows that non-dilution approaches, such as biological or chemical pretreatment, for alleviating algal inhibition are recommended for algal digestate treatment systems. Sewage sludge management for fertilizer purposes can be a step in the circular phosphorus (P) economy. Using microbial solubilization in manufacturing fertilizers from recycled materials is an innovative approach with the potential to increase P compounds' bioavailability, and fertilizers from sewage sludge ash and P-solubilizing bacteria are promising products of this technology. In addition to P and a range of macronutrients, these fertilizers contain small amounts of micronutrients and potentially toxic elements. This paper discusses the effects of fertilizer on iron (Fe) and aluminum (Al) content in soil, test plants (spring or winter wheat; grain and straw), weeds and post-harvest residues, based on field experiments. Treatments with conventional P fertilizers (superphosphate, phosphorite) and without P fertilization provided references. The tested biofertilizers containing the Bacillus megaterium or Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans strain had no effect on total Fe and Al content in the soil or on the concentration of these elements in plant biomass when applied at P doses up to 35.2 kg ha–1. Autotrophs play an essential role in the cycling of carbon and nutrients, yet disease‐ecosystem relationships are often overlooked in these dynamics. Importantly, the availability of elemental nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus impacts infectious disease in autotrophs, and disease can induce reciprocal effects on ecosystem nutrient dynamics. Relationships linking infectious disease with ecosystem nutrient dynamics are bidirectional, though the interdependence of these processes has received little attention. We introduce disease‐mediated nutrient dynamics (DND) as a framework to describe the multiple, concurrent pathways linking elemental cycles with infectious disease. We illustrate the impact of disease–ecosystem feedback loops on both disease and ecosystem nutrient dynamics using a simple mathematical model, combining approaches from classical ecological (logistic and Droop growth) and epidemiological (susceptible and infected compartments) theory. Our model incorporates the effects of nutrient availability on the growth rates of susceptible and infected autotroph hosts and tracks the return of nutrients to the environment following host death. While focused on autotroph hosts here, the DND framework is generalizable to higher trophic levels. Our results illustrate the surprisingly complex dynamics of host populations, infection patterns, and ecosystem nutrient cycling that can arise from even a relatively simple feedback between disease and nutrients. Feedback loops in disease‐mediated nutrient dynamics arise via effects of infection and nutrient supply on host stoichiometry and population size. Our model illustrates how host growth rate, defense, and tissue chemistry can impact the dynamics of disease–ecosystem relationships. We use the model to motivate a review of empirical examples from autotroph–pathogen systems in aquatic and terrestrial environments, demonstrating the key role of nutrient–disease and disease–nutrient relationships in real systems. By assessing existing evidence and uncovering data gaps and apparent mismatches between model predictions and the dynamics of empirical systems, we highlight priorities for future research intended to narrow the persistent disciplinary gap between disease and ecosystem ecology. Future empirical and theoretical work explicitly examining the dynamic linkages between disease and ecosystem ecology will inform fundamental understanding for each discipline and will better position the field of ecology to predict the dynamics of disease and elemental cycles in the context of global change. Integrating a combination of organic matter management (OMM) practices can increase soil fertility, biomass, and nutrient recycling, but evidence of this potential is limited. This study tested the impact of integrating a combination of OMM practices on soil fertility, biomass, and nutrient recycling on smallholder farms. Following a randomised complete block design, a four-season experiment was conducted in 2018-2019 on 10 farms. The treatments (T) included T1: cowpea-maize-bean-maize rotation; T2: cowpea-maize-bean-maize rotation + farmyard manure; T3: Faidherbia albida alleys + cowpea-maize-bean-maize rotation; T4: F. albida alleys + cowpea-maize-bean-maize rotation + farmyard manure; and T5 (control): maize monocrop with diammonium phosphate application at 50 kg/ha application rate. T1-T4 are the OMM practices. The maize in T2-T4 was undersown with Mucuna pruriens. Soil fertility parameters (i.e. pH, water holding capacity, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium), biomass, and nutrients in the biomass were determined. There were no differences in soil fertility parameters among all treatments (P > 0.05). From the second to the fourth season, biomass was consistently higher under T3 and T4 than in other treatments. • In UV-free controls, urease activity in water and synthetic urine was similar, and higher than in real urine. • No urease activity was detected in water, synthetic urine and real urine after UV treatment. • Electrical energy demand to inactivate urease in real urine was 25-fold higher than synthetic urine. • Organic metabolites in real urine absorbed radiant flux and inhibited urease inactivation. In source-separating sanitation systems, inhibiting urease activity prevents enzymatic urea hydrolysis and volatilisation of ammonia when urine is concentrated by evaporation. This study tested UV-based photoinactivation as a novel alternative to existing methods of inactivating urease that require dosing urine with acid, base or oxidants. The enzymatic activity of jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis) urease in water, synthetic fresh urine and real fresh urine was investigated, with and without a 15 W low-pressure UV lamp that emitted 185 nm and 254 nm radiation. In UV-free controls, urea was hydrolysed at a rate of 3.2 × 10−3 mmol mg urease −1 min−1, 3.3 × 10−3 mmol mg urease −1 min−1 and 2.0 × 10−3 mmol mg urease −1 min−1 in water, synthetic urine and real urine, respectively. In the presence of UV, no urease activity was detected in any matrix. A UV irradiation time of 1.3 and 3.3 min was needed for inactivating urease in water and synthetic urine, respectively, whereas an irradiation time of 71 min was needed for inactivating urease in real urine. Overall, the electrical energy demand for photoinactivation of urease in real human urine was estimated to be 29.1 kWh m−3. Photolysis and photo-oxidation of amino acid residues at the active site of the enzyme were likely reasons for inactivation. Organic metabolites in real urine affected photoinactivation by (i) absorbing radiation between 190 nm and 400 nm, which reduced incident radiant flux; and (ii) scavenging hydroxyl radicals, which impeded oxidative damage to the enzyme. Phosphorus (P) in societal waste streams can be recycled and used as recycled P fertilisers (RPFs). When developing new technologies for P recycling, life cycle assessment (LCA) can be used to assess their environmental impact and support environmentally friendly decisions. In LCA calculations, inventory factors describe, for example, the emissions, resource requirements and potential substitution of products. The Phosphorus Life Cycle Inventory (PLCI) model is a tool for estimating such inventory factors for the use of RPFs. The main objective of this study was to develop the PLCI model from its previous parameterisation for Denmark to make it applicable to all countries and regions of the EU. This was undertaken by considering parameters that describe regional conditions affecting the loss of P, crop P uptake and potential mineral fertiliser substitution. Such parameters include soil type, soil P status, soil erosion, groundwater leaching, crop types, productivity and crop P concentrations. Several RPFs were incorporated into the model, including coefficients describing the partitioning to the labile, plant-available P fraction. To illustrate the applicability of the model, a case study was performed. Applications of RPFs were modelled in the Copenhagen region in Denmark and the Piedmont region in Italy. The higher soil erosion rate in Piedmont resulted in over six times greater P loss than in Copenhagen. The difference in P fertilisation practice between the regions had a strong impact on the mineral fertiliser substitutions. The results point to the importance of defining the fertilisation regime of the region being modelled, and this is now possible with the new, more dynamic version of PLCI. In conclusion, the new PLCI 2.0 model provides a dynamic tool for LCA practitioners to estimate region-specific inventory factors for RPFs. The model is relatively easy to use and captures differences between fertilisers with varying P availability and between applications in different regions of the EU. An overlooked effect of ecosystem eutrophication is the potential to alter disease dynamics in primary producers, inducing disease‐mediated feedbacks that alter net primary productivity and elemental recycling. Models in disease ecology rarely track organisms past death, yet death from infection can alter important ecosystem processes including elemental recycling rates and nutrient supply to living hosts. In contrast, models in ecosystem ecology rarely track disease dynamics, yet elemental nutrient pools (e.g. nitrogen, phosphorus) can regulate important disease processes including pathogen reproduction and transmission. Thus, both disease and ecosystem ecology stand to grow as fields by exploring questions that arise at their intersection. However, we currently lack a framework explicitly linking these disciplines. We developed a stoichiometric model using elemental currencies to track primary producer biomass (carbon) in vegetation and soil pools, and to track prevalence and the basic reproduction number (R0) of a directly transmitted pathogen. This model, parameterised for a deciduous forest, demonstrates that anthropogenic nutrient supply can interact with disease to qualitatively alter both ecosystem and disease dynamics. Using this element‐focused approach, we identify knowledge gaps and generate predictions about the impact of anthropogenic nutrient supply rates on infectious disease and feedbacks to ecosystem carbon and nutrient cycling. The circular bio-based economy offers great untapped potential for the food industry as possible valuable products and energy can be recovered from food waste. This can promote more sustainable and resilient food systems in Europe in follow-up of the European Commission's Farm to Fork strategy and support the global transition to more sustainable agri-food systems with the common agricultural and fisheries policies. With its high nutrient content, waste and by-products originating from fish and seafood industry (including aquaculture) are one of the most promising candidates to produce alternative fertilising products which can play a crucial role to replace synthetic mineral fertilisers. Whereas several studies highlighted the opportunities to recover valuable compounds from fishery waste, study towards their potential for the production of fertilising products is still scarce. This study presents an extensive overview of the characteristics of fishery waste and by-products (i.e., fish processing waste, fish sludge, seafood waste/by-products), the state-of-the-art nutrient recovery technologies and recovered nutrients as fertilising products from these waste streams. The European Commission has already adopted a revised Fertilising Products Regulation (EU) 2019/1009 providing opportunities for fertilising products from various bio-based origins. In frame of this opportunity, we address the quality and safety aspects of the fishery waste-derived fertilising products under these criteria and highlight possible obstacles on their way to the market in the future. Considering its high nutrient content and vast abundance, fish sludge has a great potential but should be treated/refined before being applied to soil. In addition to the parameters currently regulated, it is crucial to consider the salinity levels of such fertilising products as well as the possible presence of other micropollutants especially microplastics to warrant their safe use in agriculture. The health of agroecosystems is subsiding unremittingly, and the over-use of chemical fertilizers is one of the key reasons. It is hypothesized that integrating biochar, a carbon (C)-rich product, would be an effective approach to reducing the uses of synthetic fertilizers and securing crop productivity through improving soil properties and nutrient cycling. The bamboo biochar at different quantities (4–12 Mg ha−1) and combinations with chemical fertilizers were tested in stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) farming in silty clay acidic soil. The integration of biochar at 8 Mg ha−1 with 100% nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) produced statistically (p ≤ 0.05) higher leaf area index, dry leaf yield, and steviol glycosides yield by about 18.0–33.0, 25.8–44.9, and 20.5–59.4%, respectively, compared with the 100% NPK via improving soil physicochemical properties. Soil bulk density was reduced by 5–8% with biochar at ≥ 8 Mg ha−1, indicating the soil porosity was increased by altering the soil macrostructure. The soil pH was significantly (p ≤ 0.05) augmented with the addition of biochar alone or in the combination of N because of the alkaline nature of the used biochar (pH = 9.65). Furthermore, integrating biochar at 8 Mg ha−1 with 100% NPK increased 22.7% soil organic C compared with the sole 100% NPK. The priming effect of applied N activates soil microorganisms to mineralize the stable C. Our results satisfy the hypothesis that adding bamboo biochar would be a novel strategy for sustaining productivity by altering soil physicochemical properties. Our current understanding of decomposition dynamics and their underlying drivers has mainly focused on surface habitats but largely ignored in subterranean environments. Here we studied abiotic and microbial drivers of early-stage litter decomposition inside and outside caves along an elevational gradient in Tenerife. We found comparable decomposition rates (k) and litter stabilizing factors (S), with contrasting drivers and elevational variation. At the surface, we observed a mid-elevational trend in k , which tended to correlate with water availability, cooler temperatures, nutrient availability, and surface-specific bacterial taxa. In sharp contrast, caves showed no elevational impact nor influence of abiotic parameters and bacterial communities on k. Despite this, we found higher levels of S in caves, which were associated mainly with reduced water availability, lower temperatures and cave-specific bacterial taxa, indicating that conditions in caves are strongly linked with carbon storage. Our findings imply that our current perception of terrestrial habitat-based carbon cycling are underestimating the net carbon budget in areas with caves. Disentangling the role of the environment on decomposition in caves is key to fully characterize their roles in nutrient cycling and to understand how increasing anthropogenic pressures will affect fundamental processes in subterranean ecosystems. Carbon emissions and associated global warming have become a threat to the world, the major contributor being the extensive use of fossil fuels and uncontrolled generation of solid wastes. Energy generation from renewable energy sources is considered an alternative to achieving carbon neutrality. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a sustainable technology that has been endorsed as a low-carbon technology complimenting both waste management and renewable energy sectors. The AD technology recovers the volatile matter from waste biomass as much as possible to produce biogas, thus reducing carbon emission as compared to open dumping or burning. However, there is a need of compilation of information on how each subsystem in AD contributes to the overall carbon neutrality of the entire system and chances of achieving a circular economy along with it. Therefore, this article aims to clarify the associated internal and external factors that determine the low carbon characteristic of anaerobic digestion technology. From this review, the potential of AD system for energy-atmosphere-agriculture nexus has been explored. Carbon emission mapping of the potential entities involved in AD were identified and perspective to life cycle assessment and future research direction has been pointed out. Climate change impact and acidification potential are the two entities that can influence the overall environmental sustainability of an AD system. It was recognized that each stage of AD system starting from substrate supply chain, biogas production, upgradation, utilization, and digestate application had a remarkable effect on the overall carbon emission potential based on its design, operation, and maintenance. Selection of suitable substrates and co-digesting them together for improved biogas production rate with high methane content and proper digestate post-processing and storage can vastly reduce the carbon emission potential of the AD technology. Further, a case scenario of India was assessed considering the utilization of major surplus biomass available through AD. Re-routing the three major substrates such as agricultural crop residues, animal wastes and organic fraction of municipal solid wastes through AD can reduce at least 3.5–3.8 kg CO 2-eq per capita of annual carbon emission load in India. A completely randomized factorial experiment was conducted to evaluate the growth and biomass production of single- and mixed crop species inoculated with mycorrhizae. Radish, (R), safflower (SF), pearl-millet (PM), mustard (M), field peas ((FP), faba-bean (FB), common vetch (CV), and berseem clover (BC) and their blends as R-SF-PM-M, FP-FB-CV-BC, R-SF-PM-M-FP-FB-CV-BC, R-SF-M-FP-FB-CV-BC, and PM-FP-FB-CV-BC were planted in a pot culture. The mycorrhizal inoculum significantly influenced the cover crops growth and biomass production under sterilized soils than that of non-sterile soils. While the safflower produced the highest total biomass, the pearl millet and field peas produced the lowest total biomass. Generally, in sterile and mycorrhizal conditions plant grown better and have high total C fixation. Within non-sterile and mycorrhizal inoculation, Safflower (1383.1 g C m−2) and Berseem Clover (1235.5 g C m−2) as a single species have fixed highest amount of carbon as biomass. Mycorrhizae inoculated BC+CV+FB+FP+SF+PM blends had a return of 1365.0 g C m−2 in non-sterile soil. Our results suggested that cover crops in single or mixed stands with mycorrhizal inoculations are expected to provide a significantly greater amount of biomass, which would contribute to soil organic matter and nutrient recycling for crop production. In this paper, a planktonic resource–consumer system with two delays is investigated and the coefficients depend on τ one of the two delays. Firstly, the property of solution and the existence of equilibrium are given. The dynamical analysis of the system including stability and Hopf bifurcation by using the delays as parameters is carried out. Both the single delay and two delays can cause the system to produce Hopf bifurcation and the stable switching phenomena may exist. Furthermore, using the crossing curve methods, we obtain the stable changes of equilibrium in two-delay parameter plane, which generalizes the results of the system that the coefficients do not depend on delay. Land application of biosolids is a primary means of recycling human waste products globally; however, because biosolids are also heavily enriched with nutrients and pollutants, it is necessary to consider the environmental impacts of land applications in various agro-ecosystems. To reduce costs and divert waste, biosolids from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, a military installation south of Tacoma, WA, USA, are composted with organic materials derived from the base itself. The potential for turfgrass management using the composted biosolids was tested in a field study at the military recreation facility, Eagles Pride golf course. The composted biosolids were surface-amended to golf course fairways (n = 3) at a rate of 46 Mg ha−1, in split applications, fall and spring, over two years, 2015 and 2016. Soil bacterial and fungal community responses were evaluated in amended and unamended soils from each fairway, along with soil chemical properties, including soil pH, total carbon (C), total nitrogen (N), and the C:N ratio. Soil microbial community analysis on soils sampled pre- and post-amendment did not demonstrate changes in community structure as a result of the composted biosolids application. Differences observed in soil microbial community structure appears to reflect edaphic and vegetative differences between fairways. Generally, correlations between soil properties and bacterial community OTUs were stronger than those with fungal OTUs, and predicted bacterial community functional analysis revealed several KO term groups were significantly correlated with soil TC and TN. Turfgrass biomass was unaffected, while leaf tissue N was increased by 4.5 and 10.6% in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Urban centres acquire and accumulate many materials from their hinterland, among these are nutrient elements such as nitrogen (N). The popular North American vision of a peri-urban setting is one where urban food production, composting and re-cycling are assumed to limit urban accumulation of nutrients. This study quantifies this assumption using the Lower Fraser Valley (LFV) of British Columbia as an example, ideal because it is surrounded by mountains, ocean and an international border which collectively delimit the peri-urban boundaries. Nitrogen influxes are dominated by livestock feed imports to support dairy and poultry production (18000 tonnes N), followed by human food imports (9210 tonnes N), as well as 5410 tonnes N as fertilizer and 4690 tonnes N in atmospheric deposition. There is a transfer of 6700 tonnes N from agricultural to urban ecosystems displacing food imports, but food production contributes to the N footprint of the LFV. Nitrogen effluxes are dominated by sewage disposal (10400 tonnes N), solid waste disposal (7020 tonnes N) and atmospheric emissions (9460 tonnes N). The total influx is 15 kg N per person, the net influx is 3.1 kg N per person. Per unit land area, these are a total influx of 24 kg N/ha and a net influx of 4.7 kg N/ha. The atmospheric emissions are 4.7 kg N per person and 7.2 kg/ha. The N in soil is mobile and it is assumed soil N is at a steady state concentration, thus the surplus N is lost from the soil, probably by leaching and runoff. The Fraser River is estimated to acquire and transport 5230 tonnes N from the region into the ocean each year, in addition to 10300 tonnes N from sewage outfall. This is coupled with effluxes of phosphorus (estimated previously), and the result probably has an impact on the coastal waters. There is little reuse of imported N and current waste management practices including composting and combustion do little to improve N efficiency. • The N budget is presented for a physically isolated peri-urban region. • N influxes were dominated by livestock feed to support local dairy and poultry. • N influxes for human food were the next most important. • N effluxes were dominated by sewage, atmospheric emissions and solid waste. • The total annual influx was 15 kg N per person, the net was 3.1 kg N per person. Use of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) to grow fish is on the rise. Fish feed typically contains 25–60% protein and is the only significant input in RAS. Fish recover 20–30% of the applied feed as biomass, and the unassimilated nitrogen is released into the water, mainly as ammonia, which is toxic to fish. Nitrification is the most common treatment practice, converting ammonia to the less toxic nitrate, and nitrogen removal is achieved by either water exchange or denitrification. The aim of this study was to develop and test a novel approach to remove nitrogen based on a microaerophilic assimilation side-reactor. In the suggested system, fish solid waste and dissolved nitrogen are assimilated into protein-rich microbial biomass, which has the potential to partially offset fish feed input. Initially, a theoretical model based on the system's nitrogen mass balance was established. Then, an intensive pilot-scale RAS was constructed, growing ∼50 kg fish/m3. The system consisted of a fish tank, solids filter, and microaerophilic assimilation reactor based on activated sludge treatment. Intrinsic solid waste and wheat-flour waste were used as carbon source. After a trial run of about 2.5 months, the RAS was tested for 101 days. Average total ammonia nitrogen, nitrite, and nitrate removal were 89.1, 69.4 and 100%, respectively. Of the introduced solids, over 82% were lost as carbon dioxide by respiration, 11.7% were recovered as microbial biomass and 6.5% as fish biomass, and only 0.6% remained in the water. Biomass organic content was similar to aquafeed and nitrogen content was equivalent to 40% crude protein. Daily energy demand for the system's designed capacity of 80 kg/m3 would result in a low energy consumption of 7.72 kW h/kg fish. Overall, a novel concept for sustainable production in intensive aquaculture was developed and successfully demonstrated in a pilot-scale RAS. Pyrolysis of calcium-rich feedstock (e.g., poultry manure) generates semi-crystalline and crystalline phosphorus (P) species, compromising its short-term availability to plants. However, enriching poultry manure with magnesium (Mg) before pyrolysis may improve the ability of biochar to supply P. This study investigated how increasing the Mg/Ca ratio and pyrolysis temperature of poultry manure affected its P availability and speciation. Mg enrichment by ∼2.1% increased P availability (extracted using 2% citric and formic acid) by 20% in Mg-biochar at pyrolysis temperatures up to 600 °C. Linear combination fitting of P K-edge XANES of biochar, and Mg/Ca stoichiometry, indicate that P species, mainly Ca–P and Mg–P, are altered after pyrolysis. At 300 °C, adding Mg as magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH) 2 ] created MgNH 4 PO 4 (18%) and Mg 3 (PO 4) 2.8H 2 O (23%) in the biochar, while without addition of Mg Ca 3 (PO 4) 2 (11%) predominated, both differing only for pyrophosphate, 33 and 16%, respectively. Similarly, the P L 2,3 edge XANES data of biochar made with Mg were indicative of either MgHPO 4.3H 2 O or Mg 3 (PO 4) 2.8H 2 O, in comparison to CaHPO 4.2H 2 O or Ca 3 (PO 4) 2 without Mg. More importantly, hydroxyapatite [Ca 5 (PO 4) 3 (OH)] was not identified with Mg additions, while it was abundant in biochars produced without Mg both at 600 (12%) and 700 °C (32%). The presence of Mg formed Mg–P minerals that could enhance P mobility in soil more than Ca–P, and may have resulted in greater P availability in Mg-enriched biochars. Thus, a relatively low Mg enrichment can be an approach for designing and optimize biochar as a P fertilizer from P-rich excreta, with the potential to improve P availability and contribute to the sustainable use of organic residues. Aim: Leaf nutrient resorption is a key nutrient conservation trait, which also influences nutrient cycling rates and pools. Most global biogeochemical models assume that resorption is non‐varying at a temporal scale. However, this trait can differ substantially within populations among years. We assessed the commonality of attaining proficient resorption, the factors associated with proficient resorption, as well as the variability of this trait and the factors controlling trait variability. Location: Global. Time period: 1965–2009. Major taxa studied: Plants. Methods: We compiled multi‐year nutrient resorption data from the literature, representing 50 studies, 94 unique study locations, and 141 species from 53 families and 29 orders. We used multiple linear regression to relate resorption data, as well as the variability in this trait, expressed as the coefficient of variation, to environmental factors. Results: Resource availability was a key driver of resorption, with nutrient‐poor soils associated with more complete resorption and lower resorption plasticity. Nitrogen and phosphorus resorption differentially responded to some drivers, such as leaf habit, soil order and mycorrhizal status. Main conclusions: Overall, environmental and biological factors representing a strong selective force for nutrient conservation, such as nutrient‐poor soil orders, semi‐arid soil moisture regimes, or lack of plant mutualists, were associated with complete resorption, whereas incomplete resorption was associated with weak selective forces, such as nutrient‐rich soil orders, or factors impeding this physiological process (e.g., drought). Inter‐annual variability in resorption was common, particularly for phosphorus. This plasticity has implications for ecosystem nutrient cycling and plant productivity, and accounting for this plasticity in dynamic models of nutrient cycling will improve predictions of nutrient limitations and productivity under future climate conditions. Abstract Human faeces from a dry toilet are converted via hydrothermal carbonization to obtain a sterilized carbonaceous material. During this process the original material undergoes consecutively hydrolysis, water elimination and polymerization reactions. Consequently, the oxygen content is reduced, leading to a material with a better dewaterability and an attractive higher heating value (HHV = 22–28 MJ kg−1). The influence of pH-value, set by the addition of citric acid, the reaction time and the reaction temperature are investigated. By thermogravimetric analysis it is shown that especially higher acid concentration as well as higher reaction temperatures and longer reaction times are necessary to fully convert the feedstock into a stable carbon-rich material. As pathogens are destroyed by hydrothermal carbonization, nutrient recovery becomes a relevant aspect. The analysis shows that alkali salts such as sodium and potassium are dissolved in the aqueous phase, but an important proportion of the phosphorus and nitrogen remain in the hydrochar. This finding is the basis for phosphorus recycling or to produce an organic fertilizer. Abstract Straw dead stock is a key driver for crop residue management decisions regarding bioenergy production. Therefore, a field study was conducted to evaluate the sugarcane straw decomposition under different straw removal rates, characterize straw composition changes, and quantify the straw-derived C and N loss. Four sugarcane straw removal rates were evaluated: no removal (14.0 Mg ha−1 of DM), 25 (10.5 Mg ha−1 of DM), 50 (7.0 Mg ha−1 of DM) and 75% (3.5 Mg ha−1 of DM) of straw removal. Our results showed that straw removal rate had no effect on first year of straw deposition, but during the second year, the lowest decomposition was associated with higher straw removal rates. Dry mass loss was also approximately 25% higher in the second year than in the first. Furthermore, carbon and nitrogen loss were two- and threefold higher in the first year compared to the second year of deposition. Overall, cellulose and hemicellulose decreased by 13 and 7%, respectively, while lignin increased proportionally by 92% during the two year experiment. Our findings suggest that the most appropriate removal rate to maintain soil quality and meet the demands for energy production is 50% of the total straw deposited on the soil. Autophagy knock-out mutants in maize and in Arabidopsis are impaired in nitrogen (N) recycling and exhibit reduced levels of N remobilization to their seeds. It is thus impoortant to determine whether higher autophagy activity could, conversely, improve N remobilization efficiency and seed protein content, and under what circumstances. As the autophagy machinery involves many genes amongst which 18 are important for the core machinery, the choice of which AUTOPHAGY (ATG) gene to manipulate to increase autophagy was examined. We choose ATG8 overexpression since it has been shown that this gene could increase autophagosome size and autophagic activity in yeast. The results we report here are original as they show for the first time that increasing ATG8 gene expression in plants increases autophagosome number and promotes autophagy activity. More importantly, our data demonstrate that, when cultivated under full nitrate conditions, known to repress N remobilization due to sufficient N uptake from the soil, N remobilization efficiency can nevertheless be sharply and significantly increased by overexpressing ATG8 genomic sequences under the control of the ubiquitin promoter. We show that overexpressors have improved seed N% and at the same time reduced N waste in their dry remains. Cities consume the majority of proteins produced globally but have unsustainable, linear food systems from production to consumption to disposal, resulting in significant nutrient losses. The industrial rearing of insects is a promising strategy for converting otherwise lost nutrients back into protein-rich animal feed and fertilizer, particularly to supplement local food production. The black soldier fly (BSF), Hermetia illucens, has been identified as a candidate for industrial rearing. BSF has a superior feed conversion ratio and cycle-time compared to other edible insects and can convert and recover nutrients from a vast variety of organic materials to protein, oil and chitin making it an attractive solution for the management of urban organic solid waste. With an increasing awareness of the environmental urgency and interest in the economic potential of the technology, this review discusses the technological factors confounding the upscaling of insect farming in urban and peri-urban contexts using BSF as a case study. These include the challenges of feed homogenisation and pre-treatment, of integrating insect life-cycle factors (e.g. mating) with bioprocess engineering concepts (which complicates automation), of meeting the nutritional requirements of the larvae at different stages of growth in order to maximize bioconversion and product quality, and of elucidating the impact of microbiome on complex behaviours and bioconversion. European agriculture is a large importer of nutrients in the form of chemical fertilizers. Additionally, countries with livestock-intensive farming face problems with disposal of nutrients in animal manure. The availability of chemical fertilizers has changed farmers' past dependence on manure. Nowadays, despite its nutrient content, manure is sometimes considered as a waste product. However, if the characteristics of manure and other waste streams could be enhanced through processing, it could be transformed into an alternative bio-based fertilizer recycling the nutrients within the farming sector. This would also create opportunities for nutrient exchange between different European regions. However, a key question is what is needed for farmers to accept these products as replacements for their current chemical fertilizer use? In this paper, key attributes determining the acceptance of alternative bio-based fertilizer products are identified. Based on the identified attributes, a discrete choice experiment was designed to reveal farmers' preferences and Willingness-To-Pay for these attributes. Identical experiments were conducted in seven different European countries. The results indicate that farmers from the different countries have common preferences for concentrated products that have certainty in the nitrogen content and at a lower price than chemical fertilizer. Other attributes such as the presence of organic carbon, hygienization of the product and fast release of nutrients were only statistically significant in some countries. The results imply that a bio-based fertilizer similar to chemical fertilizers could be sold at around 65% of the price of mineral fertilizer. Safe and effective circulation of nutrient-rich meat and bone meal (MBM) could become a carbon-based alternative to limited chemical fertilizers (CFs). Therefore, MBM biochars (MBMCs) were produced at 500, 800, and 1000 °C to evaluate their effects on plant growth, nutrient uptake, and soil characteristics. The results revealed that MBMC produced at 500 °C (MBMC500) contained the maximum amount of C, N, and phytoavailable P. All additional MBMC doses with recommended CF increased sorghum shoot yield (6.7–16%) and significantly improved P uptake. Additional experiments were conducted with decreasing doses of CF (100–0%) with or without MBMC500 (7 t/ha) to quantify its actual fertilizing value. MBMC500 showed the capability to reduce CF requirement by 20% without compromising the optimum yield (by 100% CF) while increasing pH, CEC, total-N, available-P, Mg, and microbial population of post-harvest soil. Although a δ15N analysis confirmed MBMC500 as a source of plant N, a reduction in N uptake by MBMC500 + 80% CF treatment compared to 100% CF might have limited further sorghum growth. Thus, future studies should concentrate on producing MBMC with better N utilization capability and achieving maximum CF reduction without negative environmental impacts. Boron (B) fertilizers are essential for global crop production. Sustainable B use demands a higher efficiency of B fertilizers through controlled B release and an enhanced B recycling from secondary sources, e.g. B-impregnated cellulose fiber insulation (CFI) waste. In this study, thermochemical treatments based on combustion and pyrolysis were investigated for processing CFI waste into a slow-release B fertilizer. Hot-water extractions of obtained materials confirmed that slow-release properties were achieved, and material characterization with XRD, FTIR and 11B-NMR showed that these were largely the result of formation of sparingly soluble Ca–B phases. A seedling toxicity test with fodder rape demonstrated the benefit of this slow-release B in comparison with conventional soluble B to circumvent toxicity, suggesting potential for B application via seed coatings. Finally, a fertilization trial with fodder rape and poppy seed showed that most slow-release B compounds were equally effective as soluble B at recommended B doses, while slow-release B can still benefit from reduced B leaching losses. Cycling of nutrients, such as phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N), is essential for all life: Nutrients are crucial for securing societies' food systems and valuable raw materials for industrial processes. Recycling nutrients from various side and waste streams instead of virgin nutrients has attracted considerable interest in the society, particularly as geopolitical and epidemic issues have caused many nations to reconsider how they ensure flows of critical resources by increasing the Circular Economy (CE) principles. This study examines what drivers and barriers catalyze nutrient circulation in national settings, requiring diverse actors to support intentional nutrient recycling. By taking multidisciplinary and ecosystem approaches, we examine diverse sociotechnical drivers and barriers and the actor ecosystem involved. We conduct an extensive qualitative case study on nutrient circulation (P and N) in a Finnish context, analyzing over 150 documents and interviewing over 20 diverse actors (from diverse companies through ministries to farmers) involved in nutrient recycling, from biowaste through agricultural biomasses and sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plants. Our study 1) generates an ecosystem actor map uncovering diverse actors enabling nutrient recycling in society; and 2) exposes technological, business, organizational, regulatory, linguistic, visual, and psychological drivers and barriers shaping nutrient circulation. It explains the sociotechnical preconditions for different actor/stakeholder groups to adopt and advocate circular economy (CE) principles for nutrient recycling, which are generalizable to other critical resources. The study contributes to CE research and advises practitioners by providing a comprehensive catalyst toolbox to advance nutrient circulation and facilitate its acceptability and diffusion. Anaerobic digestion of food waste within urban areas can generate decentralised renewable energy and support community enterprise activities, thereby contributing to closing the waste-energy-food loop. However, widespread uptake of small-scale, urban anaerobic digestion networks is limited by economic costs and the safe disposal of surplus digestate. This paper uses an interdisciplinary approach to assess the feasibility of anaerobic digestate management through the installation of hydroponics or algae cultivation systems, based on a case study of a micro anaerobic digestion system in London, England. Results show that installing a dewatering sifter together with a hydroponics system is a technically and economically feasible option for digestate enhancement in the urban environment. Its installation is, however, not currently justified for the system under consideration due to cost, regulatory, spatial, and contextual constraints identified using actor-network analysis. Nevertheless, if regulatory and wider contextual issues are accommodated, and more than 30 L of digestate are produced daily, a dewatering and vertical hydroponic system could result in a profit of approximately £100,000 over 10 years. While the microalgal system was also able to upgrade digestate, at present productivity is too low and the capital cost of photobioreactor technology is prohibitively expensive. This underlines the need for technical improvements and low-cost enhancement options to achieve justifiable paybacks until regulatory reforms and the wider economic situation are more favourable to anaerobic digestion treatment within cities. The priming effect (PE) in soil, when induced by a fresh carbon supply, is believed to result from two different mechanisms, “stoichiometric decomposition” and “nutrient mining”, and contributes to either long-term SOM stabilization or depletion. Understanding how to affect the balance between both mechanisms can provide valuable insight into agroecology, especially in Southern countries where organic matter management is the primary method of fertilizing cultivated plots. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the bacterial actors in each mechanism and the influence of three drivers in Malagasy Ferralitic soils: the quality of the inducing substrate, the quality of the SOM, and the soil nutrient status. Three different agricultural Ferralitic soils, characterized by different levels of NH 4 and PO 4 availability, different SOM size fractionation profiles, and different bacterial communities, were amended with three types of 13 C-labeled organic substrate (glucose, wheat residue, and rice residue) and the PE was measured at two incubation times (7 and 42 days). The results showed that a PE generated by stoichiometric decomposition was mainly induced by the polymerized fraction of crop residues, especially in soil enriched by decaying plant tissues, mineral N, and its associated decomposers guild such as Verrucomicrobia, α- and δ-Proteobacteria and Actinomycetes. Conversely, when this young SOM pool was reduced, the PE was mainly generated by N mining, especially when induced by soluble compounds and when N was limiting but P was available. Improving environmental protection and finding sustainable and renewable resources of nutrients are core issues in circular bioeconomy. Thus, this study evaluated the efficiency of recovering struvite, MgNH 4 PO 4 ·6H 2 O, from different agro-industrial wastewaters (four highly loaded reject waters of anaerobically co-digested agro-industrial waste and a raw swine slurry) and assessed the quality of recovered struvite crystals and their reusability as fertilizer. The efficiency of crystallization (E c 40–80%) and amount of struvite in the precipitate (P p 55–94%) highly varied due to the characteristics of influent wastewaters, particularly to the content of competing elements, such as alkaline and heavy metals and total solids (TS). In particular, E c (94, 75, 61%) and P p (76, 66, 48%) decreased at increasing TS (0.57, 0.73, 0.99%), demonstrating the hindering effect of solid content on struvite recovery and quality. According to X-ray diffraction analysis, the structure of all isolated samples corresponded to crystalline, orthorhombic struvite, which exhibited high purity (32–48 g/kg d N, 114–132 g/kg d P, and 99–116 g/kg d Mg) containing only a few foreign elements, whose amount depended on the characteristics of the influent wastewater. All struvite contained other plant macronutrients (K, Ca) and many micronutrients (Fe, Na, Cu, Mn, Co, Zn) that further enhance its agronomic value. Therefore, this study showed that struvite can be successfully recovered from a wide range of highly loaded agroindustrial wastewaters, and that the quality of the recovered struvite could be suitable for reuse in agriculture. Sewage sludge contains significant amounts of resources, such as nutrients and organic matter. At the same time, the organic contaminants (OC) found in sewage sludge are of growing concern. Consequently, in many European countries incineration is currently favored over recycling in agriculture. This study presents a Multi-Attribute Value Theory (MAVT)-based decision support tool (DST) for facilitating sludge treatment decisions. Essential decision criteria were recognized and prioritized, i.e., weighted, by experts from water utilities. Since the fate of organic contaminants was in focus, a simple scoring method was developed to take into account their environmental risks. The final DST assigns each sludge treatment method a preference score expressing its superiority compared to alternative methods. The DST was validated by testing it with data from two Finnish municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). The validation results of the first case study preferred sludge pyrolysis (preference score: 0.629) to other alternatives: composting and incineration (score 0.580, and 0.484 respectively). The preference scores were influenced by WWTP dependent factors, i.e., the operating environment and the weighting of the criteria. A lack of data emerged as the main practical limitation. Therefore, not all of the relevant criteria could be included in the value tree. More data are needed on the effects of treatment methods on the availability of nutrients, the quality of organic matter and sludge-borne OCs. Despite these shortcomings, the DST proved useful and adaptable in decision-making. It can also help achieve a more transparent, understandable and comprehensive decision-making process. A transition to renewable energy sources and a circular economy has increased interest in renewable resources not usually considered as energy sources or plant nutrient resources. Horse manure exemplifies this, as it is sometimes recycled but not often used for energy purposes. The purpose of this study was to explore horse manure management in a Swedish municipality and prospects for energy recovery. The case study includes a survey of horse manure practices, environmental assessment of horse manure treatment in a biogas plant, including associated transport, compared to on-site unmanaged composting, and finally a simplified economic analysis. It was found that horse manure management was characterized by indoor collection of manure most of the year and storage on concrete slabs or in containers, followed by direct application on arable land. Softwood was predominantly used as bedding, and bedding accounted for a relatively small proportion (13%) of the total mix. Anaerobic digestion was indicated to reduce potential environmental impact in comparison to unmanaged composting, mainly due to biogas substituting use of fossil fuels. The relative environmental impact from transport of manure from horse facilities to anaerobic digestion plant was small. Results also indicate a relatively high cost for horse keepers to change from composting on site to anaerobic digestion in a centralized plant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to develop a regional nutrient demand-based approach to assess the potential use of digestate nutrients from a planned biogas plant investment as a part of a regional circular economy concept. The assumed biogas plant is expected to treat urban wastes; biowastes (23,500 t/y) and sewage sludges (120,000 t/y) from the Tampere region, Finland (total population of 500,000). The calculation of the regional nutrient balance was based on the fertilizable crop areas, fertilization regimes and biomass nutrient amounts, with an assumption that livestock manures were primarily utilized in crop production. Subsequently, a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based methodology was applied to evaluate the transportation distances of nutrients from the biogas plant to the closest crop fields. As a result from the presented approach, livestock manure covered 41% and 12% of the phosphorus (P) and soluble nitrogen (N) need of the studied region. There was a residual potential for the regional utilization of biogas plant nutrients, which together with the livestock manure accounted for 50% of P and 15% of soluble-N need. Transportation of nutrients up to 40 km from the biogas plant is necessary if all nearby fields receive the waste-based nutrients, while the distance increased to 66 km if 30% of the local farmers are willing to use the nutrients. The approach presented in this study acts as a tool for planning nutrient cycles, which can be used to sustainably manage the regional nutrient flows when planning a new biogas plant investment. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, measured sediment oxygen demand (SOD) and benthic nutrient fluxes throughout Barnegat Bay, New Jersey. SOD was determined in situ using chambers equipped with optical dissolved oxygen sensors. The benthic nutrient fluxes of ammonia (NH3), nitrite + nitrate ( plus ions; here, referred to as NO32), soluble reactive phosphorous (SRP), and dissolved silica (SiO2) were measured with in situ equilibrium dialysis samplers. Measurements were made at nine stations around the periphery and at three mid-Bay locations from August 2012 to October 2013. The SOD ranged from −1.5 to −8.4 g of oxygen (O2) m−2 d−1. The SOD rates varied as a function of water temperature and followed the van't Hoff rate equation for change in reaction rate with temperature, with a temperature coefficient ( Θ) that varied among sites and averaged 1.083. The highest SOD rates in the bay were measured near the mouth of the Toms River embayment. Concentrations in the upper 1 m of sediment pore water were found up to 23 mg N L−1 for NH4+ and 6.7 mg P L−1 for SRP. Maximum measured fluxes into the overlying water were 3.0 × 10−2 g NH3-N m−2 d−1, 7.0 × 10−4 g NO32-N m−2 d−1, 1.9 × 10−3 g P m−2 d−1, and 3.6 × 10−3g SiO2 m−2 d−1. Using the measured benthic N and P fluxes, daily nutrient inputs derived from sediment recycling are shown to be comparable in scale to freshwater tributary inputs to the bay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During storage of urine, urea is biologically decomposed to ammonia, which can be lost through volatilization and in turn causes significant unpleasant smell. In response, lactic acid fermentation of urine is a cost-effective technique to decrease nitrogen volatilization and reduce odour emissions. Fresh urine (pH = 5.2–5.3 and NH 4 + -N = 1.2–1.3 g L −1 ) was lacto-fermented for 36 days in closed glass jars with a lactic acid bacterial inoculum from sauerkraut juice and compared to untreated, stored urine. In the lacto-fermented urine, the pH was reduced to 3.8–4.7 and the ammonium content by 22–30%, while the pH of the untreated urine rose to 6.1 and its ammonium content increased by 32% due to urea hydrolysis. The concentration of lactic acid bacteria in lacto-fermented urine was 7.3 CFU ml −1 , suggesting that urine is a suitable growth medium for lactic acid bacteria. The odour of the stored urine was subjectively perceived by four people to be twice as strong as that of lacto-fermented samples. Lacto-fermented urine induced increased radish germination compared to stored urine (74–86% versus 2–31%). Adding a lactic acid bacterial inoculum to one week old urine in the storage tanks in a urine-diverting dry toilet reduced the pH from 8.9 to 7.7 after one month, while the ammonium content increased by 35%, probably due to the high initial pH of the urine. Given that the hydrolyzed stale urine has a high buffering capacity, the lactic acid bacterial inoculum should be added to the urine storage tank of a UDDT before urine starts to accumulate there to increase the efficiency of the lactic acid fermentation. The dairy industry in China is rapidly developing, particularly in terms of the upscaling of dairy farms. However, nutrient-rich manure brings challenges to the sustainability of the dairy industry. This study investigated and reviewed the patterns of dairy manure management in China, and the results indicate that dairy manure could be used as an organic fertilizer because of its high organic nutrient content and low metal content. However, legislation prohibits the application of untreated (raw) dairy manure. An existing technology for handling animal slurry is the separation into a liquid and a solid manure fraction. The solid fraction can be used as compost and bedding materials, and it has limited environmental risk. However, the emissions from the storage of liquid manure need further attention. The cycle of manure production, collection, transportation, separation and storage can only be closed if the nutrients are eventually applied to grass and arable land according to crop needs. Therefore, distribution of knowledge on nutrient levels, crop needs and nutrient management plans, supported by legislation on maximum application standards, is needed.
