This paper explores contemporary affordable housing in Denmark. The aim is to unfold central ideas in some of the most progressive projects that have recently been designed and built. The paper goes into three areas of architecture, namely the social, the formal and the technological. In each area one aspect is analysed and discussed with a point of departure in a specific project: The social in relation to the neighbourly and The Orient by Dorte Mandrup, the formal in relation to the spacious and Dortheavej housing by BIG, and the technological in relation to the rebuildable and Circle House by Fællestegnestuen. The aim is to contribute to the current discourse on affordable housing from a Danish standpoint and in an architectural perspective.

International audience; Neighbour relations appear to have changed very little over the last 3 decades. But we do not all interact with our neighbours in the same way or with all neighbours alike. Neighbourliness increases with educational level and income. Relations are most frequent among those aged 30–44 and among homeowners and families with children. They are more pronounced in bourgeois and gentrified areas and in rural municipalities.; Au cours des trois dernières décennies, les pratiques de voisinage sont restées étonnamment stables. Mais nous ne voisinons pas tous de la même manière ni avec n’importe qui. Les pratiques de voisinage augmentent avec le niveau de diplôme et les revenus. Elles sont les plus importantes entre 30 et 44 ans, chez les familles avec enfants et les propriétaires. Elles sont plus intenses dans les quartiers bourgeois et gentrifiés ainsi que dans les communes rurales.

Despite the urgent need for local economic development in South Africa, Local Economic Development (LED) as area of professional endeavour/activity has largely failed to live up to this need. In this article, an alternative approach to local economic development, which involved a ‘bottom-up’ approach to urban renewal is explored. The urban renewal work of the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality is used as a case study of a ‘successful example of an LED-initiative’. By taking into account the needs of the customer (or local community), a respect for difference, a conscious drive to ensure participation of, and benefit for all affected parties, keeping the eye on the ball, a desire to learn and innovate, and a pragmatic action-orientation, the MBDA achieved success in its local economic development initiatives. The value of this article lies in the experience of lessons learned, the overall understanding of urban planning, and the necessity for urban planning to respond to the local economy of a particular city

This paper addresses the way that religious affiliation and conversion shape ongoing tensions over historical periods of exile, resettlement, exodus and elimination in a small town on the Eastern Polish border. I explore how local Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Christian’s negotiations of a troubled past are materialized and managed through narrating family histories of conversion, In particular, this paper focuses on the compromises that enable mixed faith marriages and the conflicts that emerge over the burial of religious converts. In these negotiations, members of both congregations deploy the local model of “neighbourliness” and the ideal of the borderlander, to greater and lesser success. Day-to-day the practice of considered neighbourliness helps local people to acknowledge and minimize religious and ethnic difference. However, conversion brings the realms of religion and relatedness into conjunction in a risky manner: marriage may offer an opportunity to enhance neighbourly connections, but burial is an event where the tensions over histories of conflict become apparent disrupting neighbourly relations and practices. In this paper we investigate the connections between population development, socio-economic status and the sense of belonging, in the understanding of social life in places. The article is based on a mixed-method study that includes register-based demographic data on inhabitants in the municipality of Aalborg in Denmark, survey data, and findings from fifty qualitative ethnographic interviews. We argue that local belonging is important to people, although increasingly complex and varied across local neighbourhoods. The conceptualization of the relations between demographic change, neighbourhood development and belonging is influenced by the Human Ecology (Park & Burgess 1925) that offers useful but also premature theoretical contributions in this field. Namen diplomskega dela je osvetliti pojem negatorne tožbe, s poudarkom na imisijskem varstvu, ter ga s pomočjo pregleda zgodovinskega razvoja umestiti v veljavno slovensko pravo, predstaviti pozitivno zakonsko ureditev z aplikacijo pravne teorije v sodno prakso. Varovanje lastninske pravice z negatorno tožbo je neločljivo povezano s pojmom imisij, ki predstavljajo enega najbolj tipičnih sosedskopravnih institutov. V diplomskem delu je podrobneje razčlenjen pojem negatorne tožbe in umeščen v pozitivno pravno ureditev, ki jo urejajo različni pravni viri. V začetnih poglavjih je predstavljena pravica do zdravega življenjskega okolja, ki je dvignjena na nivo ustavne pravice, sledi pa povezava s konkretizacijo na zakonski ravni. Osrednji del diplomskega dela je osredotočen na veljavno ureditev varstva pred vznemirjanjem lastninske pravice po Stvarnopravnem in Obligacijskem zakoniku. Za samo razumevanje sodne prakse pa so pojasnjene tudi ključne predpostavke ureditve in predvsem razlike v ureditvi po Zakonu o temeljnih lastninskopravnih razmerjih in Občnem državljanskem zakoniku v primerjavi s Stvarnopravnim zakonikom in Obligacijskim zakonikom, saj veliko sodne prakse izhaja prav iz teh pravnih virov. Nemalokrat naletimo na dilemo, katero obliko pravnega varstva pred imisijami uporabiti. Diplomsko delo ponuja temeljit odgovor na to vprašanje, prav tako pa zagotovo pobližje predstavlja negatorno tožbo z vsemi povezanimi instituti. Dotični členi so osvetljeni skozi aplikacijo na sodno prakso, za doprinos k boljšemu poznavanju, razumevanju ter tudi k odpravi nejasnosti pri vprašanju konkurence zahtevkov v sodni praksi. Protection of the right of ownership with actio negatoria is closely linked with the concept of immissions, one of the most typical neighbour law institutes. The concept is discussed in detail and placed in a positive legal regulation, governed by different legal sources. In the first chapters the right to a healthy living environment, which is raised to a level of constitutional rights is presented, including the interconnection with concretization at the level of legislation. The central part of the thesis is focused on the applicable regulation in the area of legal protection against interference with the right of ownership under the Law of Property Code and the Code of Obligations. For understanding the case law, key assumptions of the regulation are presented, with special focus on the differences in the regulation under the Basic Property Law Relations Act and the Slovenian Civil Code in comparison to the Law of Property Code and the Code of Obligations, as a significant part of case law is based on these legal sources. In practice there is often a dilemma, namely which form of legal protection against immissions to use. The thesis provides a thorough answer to this question, including a comprehensive presentation of actio negatoria with all related institutes. The relevant articles are also highlighted through application in the case law with a view to contribute to better knowledge, understanding and perhaps also to eliminate any confusion in the area of competition of claims in the case law.

Living together in neighbourhoods characterised by various aspects of diversity is central to the everyday life of Casamançais in both Catalonia, Spain, and Casamance, Senegal. Discursively, Casamançais speak about it similarly in both localities, construing co-residence on the neighbourhood scale as a sociality that builds on similar moral values such as relative equality, respect and consideration. At the same time, this sociality also implies negotiation, interaction and translation as central everyday practices. Investigating these practices reveals how they facilitate locally specific forms of neighbourliness. These practices are central to the suggested conceptualisation of conviviality as a process in which a fragile balance is maintained over the course of both cooperative and conflictual situations.

This article examines how Turks returning from Germany to Turkey self-fashion as 'orderly neighbours'. By maintaining aesthetically pleasing homes and gardens, keeping public spaces clean, and obeying rules and laws in public, return migrants believe they act as modern 'European-Turks' and exemplify good neighbourliness. Many neighbours, however, feel these actions are unnecessary or even disruptive to Turkish communities. In conversation with the burgeoning anthropology of ethics, this research explores how local, national and transnational assemblages foster reflections and debates on neighbourly ethics. Further, this study highlights anxieties about individualism, reciprocity, 'modernity' and 'European-ness' in today's Turkey.

This paper critically examines theories which suggest relationships between neighbours have diminished in importance in people's day-to-day lives because of macroscopic and microscopic forces such as: greater social mobility, the growth of individualism and an ever increasing number of women entering into paid employment (see Young, 1999 and Putnam, 2000). In this paper I provide new empirical evidence that challenges theories of neighbourly disassociation. By drawing on fieldwork data collected on a low income housing estate in the South of England, I am able to illustrate that: 1) intimate and strong relationships existed between neighbours that were moulded out of, and strengthened by, the need for shared solidarities in the face of financial, emotional and social hardship brought about by personal circumstances; 2) residents understood and accepted there was a ‘trade-off’ between neighbourly assistance and the issue of privacy; 3) contrary to current British and American literature (see Putnam, 2000; Garland, 2001) women were still actively undertaking the role of social facilitators on the estate; 4) community and neighbourly bonds were reinforced through trivial and traumatic events such as children's parties to the death of a loved one; 5) and residents’ interest in one another engendered a sense of security for women in the public environment.
