The mitotic spindle is an important intermediate structure in eukaryotic cell division, in which each of a pair of duplicated chromosomes is attached through microtubules to centrosomal bodies located close to the two poles of the dividing cell. Several mechanisms are at work towards the formation of the spindle, one of which is the `capture' of chromosome pairs, held together by kinetochores, by randomly searching microtubules. Although the entire cell cycle can be up to 24 hours long, the mitotic phase typically takes only less than an hour. How does the cell keep the duration of mitosis within this limit? Previous theoretical studies have suggested that the chromosome search and capture is optimized by tuning the microtubule dynamic parameters to minimize the search time. In this paper, we examine this conjecture. We compute the mean search time for a single target by microtubules from a single nucleating site, using a systematic and rigorous theoretical approach, for arbitrary kinetic parameters. The result is extended to multiple targets and nucleating sites by physical arguments. Estimates of mitotic time scales are then obtained for different cells using experimental data. In yeast and mammalian cells, the observed changes in microtubule kinetics between interphase and mitosis are beneficial in reducing the search time. The most widely spread measure of performance, accuracy, suffers from a paradox: predictive models with a given level of accuracy may have greater predictive power than models with higher accuracy. Despite optimizing classification error rate, high accuracy models may fail to capture crucial information transfer in the classification task. We present evidence of this behavior by means of a combinatorial analysis where every possible contingency matrix of 2, 3 and 4 classes classifiers are depicted on the entropy triangle, a more reliable information-theoretic tool for classification assessment. Motivated by this, we develop from first principles a measure of classification performance that takes into consideration the information learned by classifiers. We are then able to obtain the entropy-modulated accuracy (EMA), a pessimistic estimate of the expected accuracy with the influence of the input distribution factored out, and the normalized information transfer factor (NIT), a measure of how efficient is the transmission of information from the input to the output set of classes. The EMA is a more natural measure of classification performance than accuracy when the heuristic to maximize is the transfer of information through the classifier instead of classification error count. The NIT factor measures the effectiveness of the learning process in classifiers and also makes it harder for them to "cheat" using techniques like specialization, while also promoting the interpretability of results. Their use is demonstrated in a mind reading task competition that aims at decoding the identity of a video stimulus based on magnetoencephalography recordings. We show how the EMA and the NIT factor reject rankings based in accuracy, choosing more meaningful and interpretable classifiers. A fundamental question of biology is how nucleic acids first assembled and then were incorporated into the earliest forms of cellular life 4 billion years ago. The polymerization of nucleotides is a condensation reaction in which phosphodiester bonds are formed. This reaction cannot occur in aqueous solutions, but guided polymerization in an anhydrous lipid environment could promote a non-enzymatic condensation reaction in which oligomers of single stranded nucleic acids are synthesized. We used X-ray scattering to investigate 5′-adenosine monophosphate (AMP) molecules captured in a multilamellar phospholipid matrix composed of dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine. Bragg peaks corresponding to the lateral organization of the confined AMP molecules were observed. Instead of forming a random array, the AMP molecules are highly entangled, with the phosphate and ribose groups in close proximity. This structure may facilitate polymerization of the nucleotides into RNA-like polymers.

Practically all experimental measurements related to the response of nonlinear bodies that are made within a purely mechanical context are concerned with inhomogeneous deformations, though, in many experiments, much effort is taken to engender homogeneous deformation fields. However, in experiments that are carried out in vivo, one cannot control the nature of the deformation. The quantity of interest is the deformation gradient and/or its invariants. The deformation gradient is estimated by tracking positions of a finite number of markers placed in the body. Any experimental data-reduction procedure based on tracking a finite number of markers will, for a general inhomogeneous deformation, introduce an error in the determination of the deformation gradient, even in the idealized case, when the positions of the markers are measured with no error. In our study, we are interested in a quantitative description of the difference between the true gradient and its estimate obtained by tracking the markers, that is, in the quantitative description of the induced error due to the data reduction. We derive a rigorous upper bound on the error, and we discuss what factors influence the error bound and the actual error itself. Finally, we illustrate the results by studying a practically interesting model problem. We show that different choices of the tracked markers can lead to substantially different estimates of the deformation gradient and its invariants. It is alarming that even qualitative features of the material under consideration, such as the incompressibility of the body, can be evaluated differently with different choices of the tracked markers. We also demonstrate that the derived error estimate can be used as a tool for choosing the appropriate marker set that leads to the deformation gradient estimate with the least guaranteed error. A crucial insight into handwriting dynamics is embodied in the idea that stable, robust handwriting movements correspond to attractors of an oscillatory dynamical system. We present a phase dynamic model of visuomotor performance involved in copying simple oriented lines. Our studies on human performance in copying oriented lines revealed a systematic error pattern in orientation of drawn lines, i.e., lines at certain orientation are drawn more accurately than at other values. Furthermore, human subjects exhibit "flips" in direction at certain characteristic orientations. It is argued that this flipping behavior has its roots in the fact that copying process is inherently ambiguous-a line of given orientation may be drawn in two different (mutually opposite) directions producing the same end result. The systematic error patterns seen in human copying performance is probably a result of the attempt of our visuomotor system to cope with this ambiguity and still be able to produce accurate copying movements. The proposed nonlinear phase-dynamic model explains the experimentally observed copying error pattern and also the flipping behavior with remarkable accuracy. � 2009 Springer-Verlag.

Using a single asymmetric relay feedback test, a method is proposed to identify four parameters of a transfer function model. The proposed method is used to identify all the parameters in a second order plus time delay model (SOPTD). The parameters estimated are of adequate accuracy for designing suitable controllers. The estimated SOPTD models have a step response behavior matching that of the actual process. The method can also be used for identifying open loop unstable transfer function models. For unstable systems, the closed loop step responses are compared. Simulation results are given for four case studies. ? 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
