In this paper, a quartz glass with low hydroxyl groups was prepared by combining the advantages of various processes, using a plasma heat source as the flame and high-purity quartz sand as the raw material. The purity of the quartz sand was 99.997%. The number of air bubbles in the quartz glass prepared using high-purity quartz sand was lower. The hardness and tensile strength of the quartz glass were 737.7–767.1 GPa and 6.88–9.64 MPa, respectively. The hydroxyl content of the sample was only 4.11 ppm, and the hydroxyl content of the homogenized quartz glass was reduced to 2.64 ppm, which was an improvement of about 35%. After homogenization, the fictive temperature (Tf) of the quartz glass was determined to be 1253 cm−1, and the variation of the Tf value along the radial direction was reduced, indicating a more homogeneous glass structure. The stress distribution in the quartz glass was significantly improved. These results indicate that the preparation of quartz glass from high-purity quartz sand using a plasma heat source as the flame opens up new avenues for optical applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

When observing the Sun with RATAN-600 radio telescope using a spectropolarimetric complex in the range 1–3 GHz, as well as when observing coronal rain, absorption in the radio emission was discovered in the spectral region 1.5–1.65 GHz in active solar regions located under a cold filament or on the limb under a prominence. The observed line structure corresponds to the hyperfine splitting frequencies in the ground state of X²Π₃/₂ hydroxyl (OH) 1612–1720 MHz. When the observed active region passes through the knife-shaped beam pattern of the telescope antenna, the absorption band shifts in frequency due to a shift in the energy levels of the OH molecule in a magnetic field, which changes along the filament.

Abstract Because of its global abundance and reactivity with hydroxyl radicals (OH•), tropospheric carbon monoxide indirectly impacts the lifetimes of other OH•‐reactive gases, in particular methane and reactive hydrocarbons. The origin and chemistry of atmospheric CO have been studied using stable isotopes. Both 13CO and C18O undergo isotopic fractionation during its main chemical loss reaction, CO + OH•. The kinetic isotope effect (KIE) for 13CO is mass dependent, with a value of ∼5‰; 12CO reacts faster than 13CO with OH. Whereas C18O + OH• exhibits an inversely mass dependent KIE ∼−10‰. We hypothesize these KIEs result in a relative depletion of 13C18O, a CO clumped isotope. To test this, we collected CO from air samples on Long Island, NY, and discovered a −3 to −8‰ difference in the clumped isotope ratio, Δ31, relative to a random distribution of 13C and 18O in CO. A clear negative trend between [CO] and Δ31 is driven by two factors: (a) the atmospheric addition of CO from either a primary or secondary source with a Δ31 of ∼0‰ and (b) the continuing reaction of CO with OH•, leaving the remaining CO pool relatively depleted in 13C18O. This is analogous to the mechanism that determines CO Δ17O values. This study is among the first to show clumped isotope fractionation resulting from atmospheric chemistry and not thermal equilibration, which may inform the identification of clumped isotope KIEs in other atmospheric trace gases. These first Δ31 observations motivate future experimental and observational studies targeted at characterizing the clumped isotopes of CO sources, background CO, and experimentally fractionated CO.

For designing single-molecule devices that have both conjugation systems and structural flexibility, a hyperconjugated molecule with a σ–π bond interaction is considered an ideal candidate. In the investigation of conductance at the single-molecule level, since few hyperconjugation systems have been involved, the strategy of building hyperconjugation systems and the mechanism of electron transport within this system remain unexplored. Based on the skipped-conjugated structure, we present a rational approach to construct a hyperconjugation molecule using a hydroxyl group, which serves as a bridge to interact with the conjugated fragments. The measurement of single-molecule conductance reveals a two-fold conductance enhancement of the hyperconjugation system having the 'bridging' hydroxyl group compared to hydroxyl-free derivatives. Theoretical studies demonstrate that the hydroxyl group in the hyperconjugation system connects the LUMO of the two conjugated fragments and opens a through-space channel for electron transport to enhance the conductance. Surface and satellite observations of atmospheric methane show smooth seasonal behavior in the Southern Hemisphere driven by loss from the hydroxyl (OH) radical. However, observations in the Northern Hemisphere show a sharp mid‐summer increase that is asymmetric with the Southern Hemisphere and not captured by the default configuration of the GEOS‐Chem chemical transport model. Using an ensemble of 22 OH model estimates and 24 wetland emission inventories in GEOS‐Chem, we show that the magnitude, latitudinal distribution, and seasonality of Northern Hemisphere wetland emissions are critical for reproducing the observed seasonality of methane in that hemisphere, with the interhemispheric OH ratio playing a lesser role. Reproducing the observed seasonality requires a wetland emission inventory with ∼80 Tg a−1 poleward of 10°N including significant emissions in South Asia, and an August peak in boreal emissions persisting into autumn. In our 24‐member wetland emission ensemble, only the LPJ‐wsl MERRA‐2 inventory has these attributes. Plain Language Summary: The amount of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, has been growing in Earth's atmosphere during the last decade, and scientists disagree about which methane sources and sinks are responsible for the growth. One clue into understanding methane's sources and sinks is their seasonality—their month‐to‐month cycles that happen every year. Measurements of atmospheric methane taken at the Earth's surface and using satellite instruments show a steep increase each summer in the Northern Hemisphere that is not replicated when methane is simulated in a global chemical transport model, indicating missing information about source and sink seasonalities. To investigate, we use that model to simulate 24 representations of methane's largest source, emissions from wetlands, and 22 representations of its largest sink, chemical loss by the hydroxyl radical (OH). We find that OH is unlikely to cause the summer increase and model bias, but the amount, spatial distribution, and seasonal cycles of global wetland emissions are the strongest drivers. We suggest that these characteristics are linked to the underlying mechanisms determining wetland area and methane production in wetland models. The results unveil the role of global wetlands in driving methane's seasonality and inform research to analyze methane's long‐term trends. The present study investigated the phytochemical, total phenolic, flavonoid content and in vitro antioxidant of the methanolic extract of the leaf of Ipomoea hederifolia Linn. In vitro antioxidant activity was determined using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, hydroxyl radical, reducing power and phosphomolybdenum method. The total phenolic and total flavonoid contents were also determined using Folin Ciocalteau's and aluminium chloride method respectively. The preliminary phytochemical screening showed the presence of alkaloids, glycosides, steroids, triterpenoids, flavonoids, phenols and tannins. Results indicated that the total phenolic and flavonoid content were found to be 101.28±0.9238 mg of gallic acid equivalents/g and 14.91±0.672 quercetin equivalent/g respectively. The half-maximal inhibitory concentration values of the extract based on the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl was 20.33 µg/ml as compared to standard (ascorbic acid) which is 18.30 µg/ml while the half-maximal inhibitory concentration values of the methanolic extract of Ipomoea hederifolia and standard (ascorbic acid) for hydroxyl scavenging activity were found to be 104.9 µg/ml and 16.88 µg/ml respectively. The reducing power of methanolic extract and standard (ascorbic acid) at 25 µg/ml were found to be 0.183±0.002 and 0.396±0.001 respectively and the total antioxidant capacity of methanolic extract and standard (ascorbic acid) at 100 µg/ml and were found to be 0.094±0.0002 and 0.368±0.002 respectively. Despite its importance for the global oxidative capacity, spatially resolved trends and variability of the hydroxyl radical (OH) are poorly constrained. We demonstrate the utility of a tropospheric column OH (TCOH) product, created from machine learning and satellite proxy data, in determining the spatial variability in trends of tropical OH over the oceans during September through November. While OH increases domain‐wide by 2.1%/decade from 2005–2019, we find significant spatial heterogeneity in regional trends, with decreases in some areas of 2.5%/decade. Our analysis of the trends in the proxy data indicate anthropogenic‐driven changes in emissions of OH drivers as well as increasing temperatures cause these trends. This OH product is potentially a significant advance in constraining OH spatial variability and serves as a useful complement to existing tools in understanding the atmospheric oxidative capacity. Comprehensive observations of TCOH are required to assess the fidelity of this method. To understand recent trends in methane, we must also understand recent trends in hydroxyl. Because of various limitations, we unfortunately do not have long‐term, direct observations of hydroxyl. To address this problem, we have developed a machine learning model that uses satellite observations of variables relevant to hydroxyl chemistry and variability to calculate hydroxyl. We demonstrate that this product can be used to understand trends and variability of hydroxyl over the tropical oceans. While, on average, hydroxyl increases from 2005–2019, we show that this is not a universal trend and that hydroxyl actually decreases in multiple regions over the same time period. [Display omitted] Various adsorbents for CO 2 capture have been developed to mitigate the greenhouse effect. In this work, a novel CO 2 adsorbent was fabricated by depositing triethanolamine (TEOA) onto the surface of nickel-cobalt-aluminum layered double oxide (NiCoAl-LDO) via the impregnation method. The CO 2 capacity of the TEOA-LDO composite reached 1.27 mmol/g at 0 °C and 100 kPa, which was twice that of unmodified NiCoAl-LDO. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) showed that the hydroxyl groups (–OH) on the surface of NiCoAl-LDO played a significant role in facilitating CO 2 adsorption, similar to CO 2 adsorption in the presence of H 2 O, where CO 2 is not converted to carbamates but to bicarbonates through base-catalyzed hydration. This bicarbonate pathway doubles the theoretical amine efficiency, increases the CO 2 capacity, and reduces the energy consumption during CO 2 desorption. The crystal structure of the title compound was determined at 120 K. It crystallizes in the triclinic space group P\overline{1} with four independent molecules in the asymmetric unit. In the crystal, each symmetry-unique molecule forms π–π stacks on itself, giving four unique π–π stacking interactions. Intermolecular hydrogen bonding is observed between each pair of independent molecules, where each hydroxy group can act as a hydrogen-bond donor and acceptor.

Bio-solids (biological sludge) from wastewater treatment plants are a significant source of the emission of microplastics (MPs) into the environment. Weakening the structure of MPs before they enter the environment may accelerate their degradation and reduce the environmental exposure time. Therefore, we studied the effect of UV-A and UV-C, applied at 70 °C, on three types of MPs, polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), that are commonly found in sewage sludge, using three shapes (fibers, lines, granules). The MPs were exposed to UV radiation in bio-solid suspensions, and to air and water as control. The structural changes in and degradation of the MPs were investigated using Attenuated Total Reflectance–Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (ATR-FTIR) and surface morphology was performed with SEM analysis. UV exposure led to the emergence of carbonyl and hydroxyl groups in all of the PP samples. In PE and PET, these groups were formed only in the bio-solid suspensions. The presence of carbonyl and hydroxyl groups increased with an increasing exposure time. Overall, UV radiation had the greatest impact on the MPs in the bio-solids suspension. Due to the surface-to-volume ratio of the tested samples, which influences the degradation rate, the fibers were more degraded than the other two plastic shapes. UV-A was slightly more effective at degrading the MPs than UV-C. These findings show that ultraviolet radiation in combination with an elevated temperature affects the structure of polymers in wastewater bio-solids, which can accelerate their degradation. Biosurfactants are amphipathic compounds that are produced by many microorganisms and show a wide range of biological activities due to their unique characteristics. This study aimed to determine the antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of the biosurfactants isolated from Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus pentosus, and Lactobacillus casei. The antioxidant activity of biosurfactant was evaluated in vitro conditions using the ability to inhibit 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and hydroxyl free radicals and antimicrobial activities using the diffusion method in agar wells against pathogenic bacteria. Lepidolite is widespread in the upper crust and can be used as a lithium ore. In the present study, in-situ high-temperature Raman and infrared spectroscopic measurements of natural Rb/Cs-free 2M2 lepidolite in pegmatite were conducted up to 700 °C for investigating the thermal response of lepidolite. In addition, single-crystal X-ray diffraction and electron microprobe analyses were also conducted to determine the polytype and composition of the lepidolite sample. The results show that (1) in the temperature range from 25 to 700 °C, the crystal structure of 2M2 lepidolite is not expected to undergo remarkable transformations upon heating and cooling; (2) the stabilities of hydroxyls in high-charge environments are lower than those in low-charge environments at elevated temperatures up to 700 °C. As a result, hydrogen ions in 2M2 lepidolite can transfer from the non-silicate oxygens in high-charge environments to those in low-charge environments during heating; (3) the transfers of the hydrogen ions between non-silicate oxygens in high-charge and low-charge environments may lead to the dehydration of lepidolite. Thus, lepidolites in subduction zones at temperatures below 700 °C can be sufficient to trigger partial melting and result in the release of lithium in subducted oceanic and continental slabs during subduction and exhumation. The article compares the interannual variability of the atmosphere at the OH glow height, which can be associated with planetary wave propagation, at stations spaced in latitude. As a characteristic reflecting planetary wave activity we consider standard deviations of the average overnight temperature σpw from its monthly average after taking into account the seasonal variation. Joint mesopause temperature measurements at high latitudes at two optical stations Maimaga (63.04° N, 129.51° E) and Tiksi (71.58° N, 128.77° E) began in 2015. The stations are equipped with identical Shamrock (Andor) high image quality infrared spectrographs for registration of OH (3-1) in the near infrared region (~1.5 μm). The main result of studying the planetary wave activity during the 5-year period of simultaneous observations is that at Tiksi station it slightly (by about 1–2 K) exceeds that at Maimaga station. In average annual activity fluctuations, the presence of quasi-biennial oscillations is traced.

This work investigates spatial and temporal distributions of hydroxyl, OH, in laser-plasma in laboratory air at standard ambient temperature and pressure. Of interest are determination of temperature and density of OH and establishment of a correlation of molecular OH emission spectra with shadow graphs for time delays of 50 to 100 μs, analogous to previous work on shadow graph and emission spectroscopy correlation for cyanide, CN, in gas mixtures and for time delays of the order of 1 μs. Wavelength- and sensitivity-corrected spatiotemporal data analysis focuses on temperature inferences using molecular OH emission spectroscopy. Near-IR radiation from a Q-switched laser device initiates optical breakdown in laboratory air. The laser device provides 6 ns, up to 850 milli Joule, pulses at a wavelength of 1064 nm, and focal irradiance in the range of 1 to 10 terawatt per centimeter-squared. Frequency doubled beams are utilized for capturing shadow graphs for visualization of the breakdown kernel at time delays in the range of 0.1 to 100 μs. OH emission spectra of the laser plasma, spatially resolved along the slit dimension, are recorded in the wavelength range of 298 nm to 321 nm, and with gate widths adjusted to 10 μs for the intensified charge-coupled device that is mounted at the exit plane of a 0.64 m Czerny-Turner configuration spectrometer. Diatomic OH signals occur due to recombination of the plasma and are clearly distinguishable for time delays larger than 50 μs, but are masked by spectra of N2 early in the plasma decay.

In this study, grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations (GCMC) and molecular dynamics simulations (MD) were used to construct models of activated carbon with hydroxyl-modified hexachlorobenzene basic unit contents of 0%, 12.5%, 25%, 35% and 50%. The mechanism of adsorption of carbon disulfide (CS2) by hydroxyl-modified activated carbon was then studied. It is found that the introduction of hydroxyl functional groups will improve the adsorption capacity of activated carbon for carbon disulfide. As far as the simulation results are concerned, the activated carbon model containing 25% hydroxyl modified activated carbon basic units has the best adsorption performance for carbon disulfide molecules at 318 K and atmospheric pressure. At the same time, the changes in the porosity, accessible surface area of the solvent, ultimate diameter and maximum pore diameter of the activated carbon model also led to great differences in the diffusion coefficient of carbon disulfide molecules in different hydroxyl-modified activated carbons. Functional liquid fluoroelastomers are in high demand in new energy fields. And these materials have potential applications in high-performance sealing materials and as electrode materials. In this study, a novel high-performance hydroxyl-terminated liquid fluoroelastomer (t-HTLF) with a high fluorine content, temperature resistance, and curing efficiency was synthesised from a terpolymer of vinylidene fluoride (VDF), tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), and hexafluoropylene (HFP). A carboxyl-terminated liquid fluoroelastomer (t-CTLF) with controllable molar mass and end-group content was first prepared from a poly(VDF-ter-TFE-ter-HFP) terpolymer using a unique oxidative degradation method. Subsequently, an efficient "one-step" reduction of the carboxyl groups (COOH) in t-CTLF into hydroxyl groups (OH) was achieved via the functional-group conversion method using lithium aluminium hydride (LiAlH4) as the reductant. Thus, t-HTLF with a controllable molar mass and end-group content and highly active end groups was synthesised. Owing to the efficient curing reaction between OH and isocyanate groups (NCO), the cured t-HTLF exhibits good surface properties, thermal properties, and chemical stability. The thermal decomposition temperature (Td) of the cured t-HTLF reaches 334 °C, and it exhibits hydrophobicity. The oxidative degradation, reduction, and curing reaction mechanisms were also determined. The effects of solvent dosage, reaction temperature, reaction time, and ratio of the reductant to the COOH content on the carboxyl conversion were also systematically investigated. An efficient reduction system comprising LiAlH4 can not only achieve an efficient conversion of the COOH groups in t-CTLF to OH groups but also the in situ hydrogenation and addition reactions of residual double bonds (C=C) groups in the chain, such that the thermal stability and terminal activity of the product are improved while maintaining a high fluorine content. Widespread contamination of soils by neurotoxic lead ions (Pb) posed a serious risk to food security, but efficient treatment in soil remained a challenge. For the adsorption of Pb, DFT calculations were firstly performed to predict the synergistic effect of sulfhydryl-hydroxyl groups as well as the ability of sulfur ions to strengthen Pb-OH bonding. Consequently, Mn-S functionalized coffee ground biochar (MSBC) was then synthesized utilizing precipitation and impregnation methods. In the soil experiment, the removal efficiency of Pb reached 82.92%, exceeding the previous research results. In addition, it successfully restored the polluted farmland near the mining area and increased the plant height of Swiss chard by 186.23%. Subsequently, synergistic effect of sulfhydryl-hydroxyl groups was confirmed by XPS, FT-IR, and DFT calculations. Furthermore, the factors affecting the structural stability of O-Pb-S were discussed by regression analysis. These reflected that MSBC can enhance the removal efficiency of Pb in soil by mitigating the competition of impurity ions to adsorption sites. These findings may provide new insights into the development of the specific passivation materials for other heavy metals. The hydroxyl radical (OH) is the primary oxidant in the troposphere, and the impact of its fluctuations on the methane budget has been disputed in recent years, however measurements of OH are insufficient to characterize global interannual fluctuations relevant for methane. Here, we use a 6,000-y control simulation of preindustrial conditions with a chemistry-climate model to quantify the natural variability in OH and internal feedbacks governing that variability. We find that, even in the absence of external forcing, maximum OH changes are 3.8 ± 0.8% over a decade, which is large in the context of the recent methane growth from 2007-2017. We show that the OH variability is not a white-noise process. A wavelet analysis indicates that OH variability exhibits significant feedbacks with the same periodicity as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). We find intrinsically generated modulation of the OH variability, suggesting that OH may show periods of rapid or no change in future decades that are solely due to the internal climate dynamics (as opposed to external forcings). An empirical orthogonal function analysis further indicates that ENSO is the dominant mode of OH variability, with the modulation of OH occurring primarily through lightning [Formula: see text] La Niña is associated with an increase in convection in the Tropical Pacific, which increases the simulated occurrence of lightning and allows for more OH production. Understanding this link between OH and ENSO may improve the predictability of the oxidative capacity of the troposphere and assist in elucidating the causes of current and historical trends in methane.

This work investigates spatial and temporal distributions of hydroxyl, OH, in laser-plasma in laboratory air at standard ambient temperature and pressure. Of interest are determination of temperature and density of OH and establishment of a correlation of molecular OH emission spectra with shadow graphs for time delays of 50 to 100 μs, analogous to previous work on shadow graph and emission spectroscopy correlation for cyanide, CN, in gas mixtures and for time delays of the order of 1 μs. Wavelength- and sensitivity-corrected spatiotemporal data analysis focuses on temperature inferences using molecular OH emission spectroscopy. Near-IR radiation from a Q-switched laser device initiates optical breakdown in laboratory air. The laser device provides 6 ns, up to 850 milli Joule, pulses at a wavelength of 1064 nm, and focal irradiance in the range of 1 to 10 terawatt per centimeter-squared. Frequency doubled beams are utilized for capturing shadow graphs for visualization of the breakdown kernel at time delays in the range of 0.1 to 100 μs. OH emission spectra of the laser plasma, spatially resolved along the slit dimension, are recorded in the wavelength range of 298 nm to 321 nm, and with gate widths adjusted to 10 μs for the intensified charge-coupled device that is mounted at the exit plane of a 0.64 m Czerny-Turner configuration spectrometer. Diatomic OH signals occur due to recombination of the plasma and are clearly distinguishable for time delays larger than 50 μs, but are masked by spectra of N2 early in the plasma decay. Aim: To determine the in-vitro antimicrobial effect of three commercially available mouthrinses and lemon grass oil against oral sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) to prevent microbal corrosion Methods The antimicrobial effect of lemon grass oil, chlorhexidine, betadine and hydroxymouth rinseagainst Desulfovibri that was isolated from the oral cavity of a patient undergoing orthodontic treatment was done by disc diffusion method (24 h) and time dependent minimum inhibitory concentration ( 1h,2h,3h,4h,5h). Comparison of activity was done with standard antibiotic amoxyrite. The experiments were done in triplicates and statistically analysed with ANOVA. Results: All the test substances exhibited significant antimicrobial activity in a dose dependent manner that was comparable with standard. On comparing the test substances,Povidone iodine exhibited highest activity as depicted by zone of inhibition followed by Hydrogen Peroxide> Chlorhexidine> Lemongrass Oil> positive control. Conclusion: Commercially available Povidone iodine, hydroxyl and chlorhexidine mouth rinses could prevent microbial corrosion by inhibiting SRB. Lemon grass oil was also found to be effective in inhibiting SRB,howeverits effect on biofilms of orthodontic brackets and safety in patients has to be studied in future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Heavy charged particles induce severe damage in DNA, which is a radiobiological advantage when treating radioresistant tumors. However, these particles can also induce cancer in humans exposed to them, such as astronauts in space missions. This damage can be directly induced by the radiation or indirectly by the attack of free radicals mainly produced by water radiolysis. We previously studied the impact of a proton on a DNA base pair, using the Time Dependent-Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT). In this work, we go a step further and study the attack of the OH· radical on the Guanine nucleotide to unveil how this molecule subsequently dissociates. The OH· attack on the H1′, H2′, H3′, and H5′ atoms in the guanine was investigated using the Ehrenfest dynamics within the TD-DFT framework. In all cases, the hydrogen abstraction succeeded, and the subsequent base pair dissociation was observed. The DNA dissociates in three major fragments: the phosphate group, the deoxyribose sugar, and the nitrogenous base, with slight differences, no matter which hydrogen atom was attacked. Hydrogen abstraction occurs at about 6 fs, and the nucleotide dissociation at about 100 fs, which agrees with our previous result for the direct proton impact on the DNA. These calculations may be a reference for adjusting reactive force fields so that more complex DNA structures can be studied using classical molecular dynamics, including both direct and indirect DNA damage. Magnetic refrigeration material is the key to adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration technology. In this work, two magnetic refrigerants, Gd5(C4O4)(HCOO)3(CO3)2(OH)6·2.5H2O (1) and Gd2(OH)4SO4 (2), were prepared through hydrothermal reaction. Magnetic study reveals that their magnetic entropy changes are 24.8 J kg−1 K−1 for 1 and 15.1 J kg−1 K−1 for 2 at 2 K and 2 T, respectively. The magnetic entropy changes of 1 and 2 at T = 2 K and ∆H = 2 T exceed most gadolinium hydroxyl compounds, indicating that magnetic refrigerants with large magnetic entropy changes at low magnetic fields can be obtained by introducing more weak magnetic exchange ligands to replace hydroxyl groups in gadolinium hydroxyl compounds. The growth in global methane (CH4) concentration, which had been ongoing since the industrial revolution, stalled around the year 2000 before resuming globally in 2007. We evaluate the role of the hydroxyl radical (OH), the major CH4 sink, in the recent CH4 growth. We also examine the influence of systematic uncertainties in OH concentrations on CH4 emissions inferred from atmospheric observations. We use observations of 1,1,1-trichloroethane (CH3CCl3), which is lost primarily through reaction with OH, to estimate OH levels as well as CH3CC3 emissions, which have uncertainty that previously limited the accuracy of OH estimates. We find a 64-70% probability that a decline in OH has contributed to the post-2007 methane rise. Our median solution suggests that CH4 emissions increased relatively steadily during the late 1990s and early 2000s, after which growth was more modest. This solution obviates the need for a sudden statistically significant change in total CH4 emissions around the year 2007 to explain the atmospheric observations and can explain some of the decline in the atmospheric 13CH4/12CH4 ratio and the recent growth in C2H6 Our approach indicates that significant OH-related uncertainties in the CH4 budget remain, and we find that it is not possible to implicate, with a high degree of confidence, rapid global CH4 emissions changes as the primary driver of recent trends when our inferred OH trends and these uncertainties are considered.

In this study, grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations (GCMC) and molecular dynamics simulations (MD) were used to construct models of activated carbon with hydroxyl-modified hexachlorobenzene basic unit contents of 0%, 12.5%, 25%, 35% and 50%. The mechanism of adsorption of carbon disulfide (CS2) by hydroxyl-modified activated carbon was then studied. It is found that the introduction of hydroxyl functional groups will improve the adsorption capacity of activated carbon for carbon disulfide. As far as the simulation results are concerned, the activated carbon model containing 25% hydroxyl modified activated carbon basic units has the best adsorption performance for carbon disulfide molecules at 318 K and atmospheric pressure. At the same time, the changes in the porosity, accessible surface area of the solvent, ultimate diameter and maximum pore diameter of the activated carbon model also led to great differences in the diffusion coefficient of carbon disulfide molecules in different hydroxyl-modified activated carbons. However, the same adsorption heat and temperature had little effect on the adsorption of carbon disulfide molecules.

Low charge separation efficiency (η sep) of TiO 2 impedes its applications of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. A positive potential pretreatment approach has been developed to construct a surface polarization with −OH groups at a potential of 1.48 V RHE. When the pretreatment time of 6 h is used, the η sep and photocurrent density (J ph) reach up to 54 % (vs. 24 %, TiO 2) and 0.92 mA cm−2 (vs. 0.32 mA cm−2, TiO 2) under AM 1.5 G illumination, respectively. The photovoltage can be increased from 0.17 V to 0.52 V. When the pretreatment time is extended to 22 h, a higher J ph of 1.57 mA cm−2 and η sep of 87 % can be obtained. Furthermore, the positive potential pretreated TiO 2 possesses excellent PEC stability. The PEC improvements can be attributed to the surface polarization with the −OH groups and favorable surface states of Ti-OH, but not to the formation of Ti3+ or oxygen vacancies. BiOBr nanosheets with preferentially exposed facet (0 1 0) was well-fabricated to facilitate formate electrosynthesis, which achieved stable output at ultra-wide voltage window of 1200 mV, and the Faraday efficiency of formate was 96.9 % at −0.7 V vs. RHE. Compared to BiOBr (0 0 1), BiOBr (0 1 0) can promote water-splitting and produce hydroxyls (*OH). The orderly arrangement of [Bi 2 O 2 ]2+/[Br]− layers and larger [Bi 2 O 2 ]2+ layer spacing over the (0 1 0) facet promotes the *OH diffusion to the interlayer and then combining with CO 2 to form Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 intermediates. It finally converts to hydroxyls-contained metallic bismuth after electroreduction. These hydroxyls are proved to be self-renewable to launch a new round of BiOBr-to-Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 -to-active bismuth progress, which promote the activation of CO 2 thermodynamically and maintain the stability of operation continuously. The kinetics of the reaction of hydroxyl radical (OH) with dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP, (CH3O)2CH3PO) (reaction 1) OH + DMMP → products (1) was studied at the bath gas (He) pressure of 1 bar over the 295–837 K temperature range. Hydroxyl radicals were produced in the fast reaction of electronically excited oxygen atoms O(1D) with H2O. The time-resolved kinetic profiles of hydroxyl radicals were recorded via UV absorption at around 308 nm using a DC discharge H2O/Ar lamp. The reaction rate constant exhibits a pronounced V-shaped temperature dependence, negative in the low temperature range, 295–530 K (the rate constant decreases with temperature), and positive in the elevated temperature range, 530–837 K (the rate constant increases with temperature), with a turning point at 530 ± 10 K. The rate constant could not be adequately fitted with a standard 3-parameter modified Arrhenius expression. The data were fitted with a 5-parameter expression as: k1 = 2.19 × 10−14(T/298)2.43exp(15.02 kJ mol−1/RT) + 1.71 × 10−10exp(−26.51 kJ mol−1/RT) cm3molecule−1s−1 (295–837 K). In order to explore the lubrication performance of alcohols under high loads and high speeds conditions, especially the relationship between carbon-chain length and hydroxyl number and lubrication performance, the effects of carbon-chain length and hydroxyl number on the lubrication performance were well studied. The tribological properties of a series of alcohols were investigated by a four-ball tribological machine, and the effects of the carbon-chain length and the hydroxyl number on their lubricating properties were investigated by means of viscometer, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman. Experiments show that with the increasing of the carbon-chain length, the run-in period and the time for achieving stable friction coefficient were shorted, and the wear was reduced; with the increasing of the hydroxyl number, the wear decreased with no obvious run-in period and consistent fluctuation of friction coefficient for ethylene glycol and continuous decrease of friction coefficient for glycerol. It is found that friction-induced graphene is superior to amorphous carbon in effectively promoting the tribosystem to achieve the stable friction coefficient and shorten run-in period, which provides reference for the application of alcohols in the field of mechanical equipment.

The anion of pyridine, C5H5N-, has been thought to be short lived in the gas phase and was only previously observed indirectly. In the condensed phase, C5H5N- is known to be stabilized by solvation with other molecules. We provide in this study striking results for the formation of isolated C5H5N- from microdroplets of water containing dissolved pyridine observed in the negative ion mass spectrum. The gas-phase lifetime of C5H5N- is estimated to be at least 50 ms, which is much longer than previously thought. The generated C5H5N- captured CO2 molecules to form a stable (PyCO2) - complex, further confirming the existence of C5H5N-. We propose that the high electric field at the air–water interface of a microdroplet helps OH- to transfer an electron to pyridine to form C5H5N- and the hydroxyl radical •OH. Oxidation products of the Py reacting with •OH are also observed in the mass spectrum recorded in positive mode, which further supports this mechanism. The present study pushes the limits of the reducing and oxidizing power of water microdroplets to a new level, emphasizing how different the behavior of microdroplets can be from bulk water. We also note that the easy formation of C5H5N- in water microdroplets presents a green chemistry way to synthesize value-added chemicals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The hydroxyl radical (OH) sets the oxidative capacity of the atmosphere and, thus, profoundly affects the removal rate of pollutants and reactive greenhouse gases. While observationally derived constraints exist for global annual mean present-day OH abundances and interannual variability, OH estimates for past and future periods rely primarily on global atmospheric chemistry models. These models disagree ± 30% in mean OH and in its changes from the preindustrial to late 21st century, even when forced with identical anthropogenic emissions. A simple steadystate relationship that accounts for ozone photolysis frequencies, water vapor, and the ratio of reactive nitrogen to carbon emissions explains temporal variability within most models, but not intermodel differences. Here, we show that departure from the expected relationship reflects the treatment of reactive oxidized nitrogen species (NOy) and the fraction of emitted carbon that reacts within each chemical mechanism, which remain poorly known due to a lack of observational data. Our findings imply a need for additional observational constraints on NOy partitioning and lifetime, especially in the remote free troposphere, as well as the fate of carbon-containing reaction intermediates to test models, thereby reducing uncertainties in projections of OH and, hence, lifetimes of pollutants and greenhouse gases. This work reported the development, prototyping and validation of a low-cost colorimetric paper-based sensor for the analysis of phenolic contaminants in waterbodies. The device was constructed using chromatographic paper and the chromogenic probe was Folin Ciocalteu reagent. Results evidenced that undiluted chromogen solution and 15% sodium carbonate allowed the maximum performance of the sensor, which exhibited adequate linearity between 100 mg l−1 and 1000 mg l−1 and limits of detection and quantification of 25 and 1000 mg l−1, respectively for the phenolic probes herein used (e.g. gallic acid, catechol, pyrogallol and vanillin), as well as adequate recovery for gallic acid upon recovery test. Moreover, the paper-based sensor was used to evaluate a real sample, and results were compared to a standard test, thereby presenting no statistically significant difference (i.e. 505.21 mg l−1 for the standard test and 517.49 mg l−1 for the paper-based sensor, p > 0.05). The findings therefore suggests that the biosensor herein described is a low-cost and valuable alternative to detect and quantify phenolic contaminants in waterbodies.

In a sustained search for novel and effective antioxidants, a potential therapeutic leads against renal, and neurological disorders. Amongst the heterocycles, pyrazole and their derivatives have been extensively studied for their biological potencies, particularly to a larger extent for their antioxidant properties. Although many of pyrazole derivatives displayed antioxidant activities, still there is a need of developing efficient protocol for their synthesis, involving ecofriendly conditions, molecules of greater antioxidant efficacy and lesser toxicity, etc. In this context, the current study presents an amberlyst-15 catalysed efficient synthesis of 2-pyrazoline derivatives, 5(a-g) via (3 + 2) annulation of chalcones with phenylhydrazines. Structure proofs of new pyrazoles offered by spectral studies, and the molecular structure of compound 5d of the series by crystallographic studies, which revealed an intra molecular hydrogen bond interactions (C–H⋯N type), and stabilization by C–H...π and π---π molecular interactions. Of the series, compounds 5g and 5h show excellent DPPH (IC50 = 0.245 ± 0.01, and 0.284 ± 0.02 μM); and hydroxyl (IC50 = 0.905 ± 0.01, and 0.892 ± 0.01μM) radical scavenging activities comparable with respective controls, ascorbic acid (IC50 = 0.483 ± 0.01μM) and BHA (IC50 = 1.739 ± 0.01μM). The molecular docking and ADME/Tox studies indicate that, these compounds have good antioxidant activity through π-π stacking with Catalase via Try337 and Phe140, and therefore, might be lead antioxidants for further study.

Lewis acids of solid catalysts have been featured for a pivotal role in promoting various reactions. Regarding the oxidation protocol to remove formaldehyde, the inherent drawback of the best-studied MnO 2 materials in acidic sites has eventually caused deficiency of active hydroxyls to sustain low-temperature activity. Herein, the cryptomelane-type MnO 2 was targeted and it was tuned via incorporation of Zr metal, exhibiting great advances in not only the complete HCHO-to-CO 2 degradation but also cycling performance. Zr species were existent in doping state in the MnO 2 lattice, rendering lower crystallinity and breaking the regular growth of MnO 2 crystallites, which thereby tripled surface area and created larger volume of smaller mesopores. Meantime, the local electronic properties of Mn atoms were also changed by Zr doping, i.e. , more low-valence Mn species were formed due to the electron transfer from Zr to Mn. The results of infrared studies demonstrate the higher possession of Lewis acid sites on ZrMn, and this high degree of electrophilic agents favored the production of hydroxyl species. Furthermore, the reactivity of surface hydroxyls, as investigated by CO temperature programmed reduction and temperature programmed desorption of adsorbed O 2 , was obviously improved as well after Zr modification. It is speculated jointly with the characterizations of the post-reaction catalysts that the accelerated production of active hydroxyls helped rapidly convert formaldehyde into key intermediate—formate, which was then degraded into CO 2 , avoiding the side reaction path with undesired intermediate—hydrocarbonate—over the pristine MnO 2 , where active sites were blocked and formaldehyde oxidation was inhibited. Additionally, Zr decoration could stabilize Lewis acidity to be more resistant to heat degeneration, and this merit brought about advantageous thermal recyclability for cycled application. ZnO-based photocatalysts have been widely applied to photocatalytic reactions. However, the pure phase ZnO is rarely used in degradation of refractory pollutants and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution due to its poor photo-redox ability. In this study, we develop a novel surface atom regulation strategy using fructose molecules containing hydroxyl groups to improve photo-oxidation ability of ZnO. Interestingly, the fructose-regulated ZnO nanosheets with oxygen vacancies exhibit more positive surface valence band maximum than that of pristine ZnO. The photogenerated holes with strong oxidation capacity can be formed on the fructose-regulated ZnO nanosheets. The fructose-regulated ZnO nanosheets can rapidly degrade high concentration of phenol and other organic pollutants, which is difficultly achieved by the pristine ZnO nanosheets. In addition, photocatalytic H 2 production activity is also found on our pure phase ZnO. The method of digital difference filters is applied to the data analysis of SATI observations of hydroxyl nightglow intensity and rotational temperature at altitudes 85–90 km over Almaty (43°03' N, 76°58' E), Kazakhstan, in 2010–2017. We examine seasonal and interannual variations in monthly average values and standard deviations of variations with periods 0.4–5.4 hrs, which may be associated with internal gravity waves in the mesopause region. The monthly average temperature near the mesopause has a maximum in winter and a minimum in June. The monthly average intensity has an additional maximum in June. Standard deviation of mesoscale rotational temperature variations and characteristics of internal gravity waves are maximum in spring and autumn. The spring maximum of mesoscale OH emission intensity variations is shifted to June. Interannual variations and multi-year trends of OH rotational temperature and emission intensity may differ in detail. This may be connected with seasonal and long-term variations in the complex system of the photochemical processes, which produce the OH nightglow.

Measurements of OH, H2SO4, and MSA at South Pole (SP) Antarctica were recorded as a part of the 2003 Antarctic Chemistry Investigation (ANTCI 2003). The time period 22 November, 2003-2 January, 2004 provided a unique opportunity to observe atmospheric chemistry at SP under both natural conditions as well as those uniquely defined by a solar eclipse event. Results under natural solar conditions generally confirmed those reported previously in the year 2000. In both years the major chemical driver leading to large scale fluctuations in OH was shifts in the concentration levels of NO. Like in 2000, however, the 2003 observational data were systematically lower than model predictions. This can be interpreted as indicating that the model mechanism is still missing a significant HOx sink reaction(s); or, alternatively, that the OH calibration source may have problems. Still a final possibility could involve the integrity of the OH sampling scheme which involved a fixed building site. As expected, during the peak in the solar eclipse both NO and OH showed large decreases in their respective concentrations. Interestingly, the observational OH profile could only be approximated by the model mechanism upon adding an additional HOx radical source in the form of snow emissions of CH2O and/or H2O2. This would lead one to think that either CH2O and/or H2O2 snow emissions represent a significant HOx radical source under summertime conditions at SP. Observations of H2SO4 and MSA revealed both species to be present at very low concentrations (e.g., 5 × 105 and 1 × 105 molec cm-3, respectively), but similar to those reported in 2000. The first measurements of SO2 at SP demonstrated a close coupling with the oxidation product H2SO4. The observed low concentrations of MSA appear to be counter to the most recent thinking by glacio-chemists who have suggested that the plateau's lower atmosphere should have elevated levels of MSA. We speculate here that the absence of MSA may reflect efficient atmospheric removal mechanisms for this species involving either dynamical and/or chemical processes. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The dispersive and polar components of surface energy are influenced by the effective molecular size and the intra-molecular configurations of the polar groups, respectively. The surface energy was hypothesized that the surface energy of a polyepichlorohydrin (PECH)-triazole polymer can be reduced by adding an end hydroxyl group (a polar group) which can interact with the nitrogen on the triazole group to reduce the net dipole of the molecule and to reduce the increase in dispersive surface energy by the addition of alkyl chain (dispersive group). The chlorine atom on PECH rubber was firstly substituted by an azide group, which was then converted to triazole groups linked with alkyl-ol that contained 1–4 carbon atoms. The polymers thus-produced were then spin-coated onto a silicon wafer to form a thin film characterized by static contact angles (30 s contact) and dynamic contact angles for drops of water and diiodomethane. The newly synthesized materials have sufficient thin film-formation capacity. Dual interactions that involve interactions between alkyl-ol hydroxyl group and amine nitrogen and the interaction between ether oxygen and imine nitrogen cause the dispersive surface energy to decrease as the alkyl chain length increases. Consequently, a very low polar surface energy of 0.14 mJ/m2 was obtained for PECH-triazole-propyl-ol, a material without any halogen atoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Density functional theory is used to study the formaldehyde (HCHO) oxidization mechanism with or without the assist of active oxygen and hydroxyl over silver cluster. We elaborate all possible intermediates adsorption structures and energies of HCHO oxidation on the Ag 19 cluster, and propose the pathways for the active oxygen, hydroxyl and their synergistic function assisted reaction processes. It is found that the direct HCHO dehydrogenation proceeds along HCHO → CHO → CO and the HCHO dehydrogenation is the rate-determining step with a barrier energy (E b) of 1.922 eV. With the assist of active oxygen, a reaction pathway of HCHO (+O) → HCHO 2 →CHO 2 (+O) → CO 2 with the direct dehydrogenation of methylenedioxy being the rate-determining step and a E b value of 1.119 eV is demonstrated. While the reaction pathway of HCHO (+OH) → HCHOOH → HCOOH (+OH) → CHO 2 → CO 2 is favorable in the presence of hydroxyl, in which the direct formate dehydrogenation is the rate-determining step with an E b value of 1.424 eV. Combining the promotion effect of active oxygen and hydroxyl together, the preferable reaction route is HCHO (+OH) → HCHOOH → HCOOH (+OH) → CHO 2 (+O) → CO 2 with the HCOOH oxidation step as the controlling step and a low E b value of 0.837 eV. These calculation results give us a clear view of the effect of active oxygen and hydroxyl in HCHO oxidation, and offer a reasonable explanation for the experimental findings in the literature. Current internal combustion engines (ICEs) are powered by fossil fuels which create the challenges of low combustion efficiency and the emission of greenhouse gases. This has negatively affected the environment, leading to global warming and climate change. Interim technologies can be implemented to reduce these effects whilst alternative technologies are being explored. This research aimed at selecting the most appropriate geometrical design of a hydroxyl booster dry cell, a device which operates on the principles of electrolysis to produce hydroxyl gas commonly referred to as Brown gas or HHO. When a voltage is applied to a body of water, it splits it into its base components, i.e. hydrogen and oxygen cold plasma, a mixture sometimes referred to as hydroxyl gas. The addition of hydroxyl gas into the combustion chamber of an ICE initiates a more complete combustion due to the explosive and diffusive nature of hydrogen accompanied by the cooling effect of water thus reducing potential for NOx formation. This leads to fuel savings, cost savings and reduced emissions. A rectangular hydroxyl booster dry cell was selected and designed, fabricated and tested for effectiveness. Typically GaN metal-oxide-semiconductor heterojunction-field-effect transistors (MOS-HFETs) have used two separate dielectrics for the gate and access regions. However, as this article shows, with proper gate-stack engineering, a unified dielectric solution can be achieved for the transistor. HfO2 dielectrics were deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD). Two types of oxidants were investigated, namely, water (H2O) and ozone (O3). It was found that MOS-HFETs with O3 oxidant yielded lower threshold voltage (VTH) shifts, higher maximum drain current (IDS,max) of 340 mA/mm, 20% lower ON-resistance (RON), higher peak transconductance at 112.66 mS/mm, lower hysteresis, and lower gate leakage (5.4 × 10−6 A/cm2) compared to water oxidant based MOS-HFETs with IDS,max of 240 mA/mm, 81.38 mS/mm peak transconductance, and 1.7 × 10−4 A/cm2 gate leakage. DC/RF dispersion tests showed MOS-HFETs with O3 oxidant had ~200 × better current collapse recovery. Temperature characterization and reliability test results, such as high-temperature reverse bias (HTRB), are published for the first time on ALD-HfO2/AlGaN/GaN MOS-HFETs using tetrakis(dimethylamino)hafnium (TDMAH) and O3 precursor. Using an ozone oxidant provided more stability (i.e., less variability in RON and VTH) as a function of temperature. Finally, when devices were electrically stressed in the OFF-state, the HTRB test showed minimal VTH drift (<0.5 V) in the case of O3 oxidant versus much larger VTH drift (2.5 V) in the case of H2O oxidant. Experiments were performed at Summit, Greenland (72°34′ N, 38°29′ W) to investigate hydroxyl mixing ratios in the sunlit surface snowpack (or firn). We added a carefully selected mixture of hydrocarbon gases (with a wide range of hydroxyl reactivities) to a UV and visible light transparent flow chamber containing undisturbed natural firn. The relative decrease in mixing ratios of these gases allowed estimation of the lower limit mixing ratio of hydroxyl radicals in the near-surface firn pore spaces. Hydroxyl mixing ratios in the firn air followed a diurnal cycle in summer 2003 (10-12 July), with peak values of more than 3.2×106 molecules cm-3 between 13:00 and 16:00 local time. The minimum value estimated was 1.1×106 molecules cm-3 at 20:00 local time. Results during spring of 2004 showed lower, but rapidly increasing, peak hydroxyl mixing ratios of 1.1×106 molecules cm-3 in the early afternoon on 15 April and 1.5×106 molecules cm-3 on 1 May. Our firn hydroxyl estimates were similar to directly measured above-snow ambient levels during the spring field season, but were only about 30% of ambient levels during summer. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. We investigate the interrelation between the hydration of the lunar regolith and the mineral composition of the surface of the Moon with respect to the concentrations of plagioclase, TiO2 (highly correlated with the oxide mineral ilmenite), and Mg-spinel. The spectral properties of lunar regions with a low concentration of plagioclase or a high concentration of TiO2 or Mg-spinel show a significant reduction in hydration at lunar midday compared to other compositions. This suggests that these oxide minerals contain less of the strongly bound OH component, which is not removed at lunar midday. The time-of-day-dependent variation of the 3 μm band depth is greater in TiO2-rich areas compared to other mare regions. The TiO2-rich regions therefore appear to have a strong tendency to adsorb solar wind-induced hydrogen into binding states of low energy that can more readily desorb and readsorb OH/H2O on a daily basis.
