Introduction: In Switzerland, heating accounts for 70% of a building’s energy consumption, mostly fueled by fossil sources. Recently, cantonal regulations have mandated the use of renewable energy in heating, making heat pumps more significant. This study examines how public and private actors can create or transform a business ecosystem to facilitate heat pump adoption in multifamily houses and which business models, resources, and activities are most effective to support this transformation. Methods: We conducted a literature review and 13 semi-structured interviews with experts in heat pumps and contracting business models. The interviews were analyzed using an ecosystem framework. Results: Our findings revealed three primary barriers to the adoption of heat pumps in MFHs: technical challenges, lack of expertise, and regulatory issues. In terms of contracting business models, high transaction costs and customer acceptance are significant obstacles. Additionally, we discovered that in Switzerland, contracting is predominantly offered by public-oriented organizations with ready access to capital. Discussion: The study emphasizes the necessity for collaboration among various actors to facilitate the implementation of contracting solutions with the goal of accelerating the adoption of heat pumps in multifamily housing. Key activities include generating the necessary expertise and standardizing large heat pumps in MFHs, central government efforts to harmonize and facilitate HP regulations across cantons, as well as active communication and sensitization of building owners and users. Methods and instrumentation for measuring grout quality in heat pump boreholes, including the measurement of groundwater flow through boreholes outside partly grouted borehole exchanger pipes, have been developed in the Czech Republic. A Semtex charge has also been developed to repair rock massifs, which reliably disconnects borehole exchanger pipes without severely harming the surrounding rock environment or buildings. Ground heat pump systems (GHPSs) are esteemed for their high efficiency within renewable energy technologies, providing effective solutions for heating and cooling requirements. These GHPSs operate by utilizing the relatively constant temperature of the Earth's subsurface as a thermal source or sink. This feature allows them to perform greater energy transfer than traditional heating and cooling systems (i.e., heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC)). The GHPSs represent a sustainable and cost-effective temperature-regulating solution in diverse applications. The ground heat exchanger (GHE) technology is well known, with extensive research and development conducted in recent decades significantly advancing its applications. Improving GHE performance factors is vital for enhancing heat transfer efficiency and overall GHPS performance. Therefore, this paper provides a comprehensive review of research on various factors affecting GHE performance, such as soil thermal properties, backfill material properties, borehole depth, spacing, U-tube pipe properties, and heat carrier fluid type and velocity. It is now widely confirmed by scientific evidence that greenhouse gas emissions must be reduced to counteract the effects of global warming. The production of heat for industrial purposes is responsible for 36.8% of world energy-related emissions due to the widespread use of fossil fuels. Heat pumps are a key technology in the transition towards more sustainable industrial processes. In this paper, a systematic review of the literature produced in the last 5 years in international journals regarding the integration of heat pumps in industrial processes is presented. Firstly, papers presenting innovative configurations for high temperature heat pumps (HTHP), i.e., heat pumps delivering temperatures in the range between 100 °C and 200 °C, suitable for many industrial processes but still under development, are reviewed. Then, papers reporting innovative solutions for the integration of heat pumps in specific industrial processes and sectors (e.g., distillation, drying, desalination, etc.) are analyzed. Finally, the literature about alternative low-GWP refrigerants for industrial heat pumps, both pure compounds and mixtures, is described. It is concluded that many progresses have been realized in the last 5 years (2020–2024) regarding the identification of innovative heat pumps for industrial applications, but further research is certainly required. The uptake of low-carbon domestic heating systems is a significant strategy towards global targets of reducing greenhouse emissions and mitigating climate change. Pre-1900 hard-to-treat houses will still be existing in the next 25 years, and they have the greatest potential for improved energy-efficiency. This study investigates the potential of fabric retrofit to prepare an older, hard-to-treat house type for heat pump use. The house type was modelled in DesignBuilder and validated using the Ulster University test house. The wall, loft and floor insulation, as well as glazing upgrades can yield up to 50% reduction in heating demand for a hard-to-treat house type, thereby preparing it for heat pump installation. Additionally, upgrading insulation and glazing in line with the current building standards was cost-effective, with a net present value of approximately GBP 12,000. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A photovoltaic thermal panel (PV/T) is an integrated module that harnesses both photovoltaic and solar thermal technologies to convert solar energy into electricity and heat, thereby enhancing overall energy efficiency. This paper aims to explore the suitability of PV/T solar heat pump systems across various climate zones and assess their potential for widespread application. By analyzing the operating principles of an indirect expansion PV/T solar heat pump system in conjunction with the climate characteristics of different regions, MATLAB R2019b/Simulink software was employed to evaluate the photoelectric performance of PV and PV/T systems in representative cities across five distinct climate zones in China during typical winter days. Key metrics, such as power generation, hot water storage tank temperature, indoor temperature, and system COP, were chosen to assess the heating performance of the PV/T solar heat pump system. The findings indicate that the winter ambient temperature significantly affects the photoelectric efficiency of both the PV and PV/T systems. While higher latitudes with lower ambient temperatures yield greater photoelectric efficiency, the southern regions exhibit higher power generation during winter. The winter heating effectiveness of the PV/T solar heat pump system is mainly influenced by indoor and water tank temperatures, with Harbin's system performing the poorest and failing to meet heating demands, whereas Nanjing's system shows the best results. The accurate optimisation of absorption chillers is often impeded by idealised models that overlook system interactions and machine complexities. This study introduces a validated mathematical description for predicting the primary indicators of non-idealised absorption chillers, accounting for factors such as the electrical work of the Solution Circulation Pump, entropy changes within the refrigerant cycle, and exergy losses. Validation against 13 years of data (2008–2021) from the University of Debrecen's absorption chiller indicated close agreement, with deviations within acceptable limits. The use of a solution heat exchanger shifted cooling indicators towards their minima. Sensitivity analyses indicated that a 2.5% reduction in condenser temperature increased COP by 41.3% and Cooling Exergetic Efficiency by 15.5%, while a 2.5% reduction in the Heat Fraction Factor improved both by 34%. Adjusting absorber temperature and Heat Fraction Factor down by 2.5%, alongside a 2.5% rise in generator temperature, resulted in a 100.8% increase in COP and a 52.8% boost in Cooling Exergetic Efficiency. The performance of heat pump systems for heating and cooling heavily relies on the thermal conditions of their reservoirs. This study introduces a novel thermal reservoir, detailing a 2017 project where the Municipality of Stavanger installed a heat exchanger system on the wall of a main wastewater tunnel beneath the city center. It provides a comprehensive account of the system's design, installation, and performance, and presents an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model that predicts heat pump capacity, electricity consumption, and outlet temperature across seasonal variations in wastewater temperatures. By integrating domain knowledge with the ANN, this study demonstrates the model's capability to detect anomalies in heat pump operations effectively. The network also confirms the consistent performance of the heat exchangers from 2020 to 2024, indicating minimal fouling impacts. Integration of heat pumps combined with thermal energy storage provides a key pathway to decarbonizing the energy supply in the industry when the processes are not operated continuously. Yet, this integration of such novel systems introduces control challenges due to added dependencies between different process streams. This work investigates the control problem of heat pumps coupled to stratified thermal energy storage that is integrated into non-continuous industrial processes. A two-layer control strategy is proposed, where, in the higher level, a model predictive controller is developed for energy management using a linear model of the non-linear process. The resulting optimization problem is a mixed integer quadratic program. The low-level control layer is defined with standard industry controllers. The overall system is tested using a dynamic simulation model for the entire process, demonstrating its performance in three different cases. The control strategy optimizes heat recovery while ensuring system operability. The study demonstrates successful disturbance rejection and cold starts, wherein 100% of the targeted heat recovery can be confirmed under nominal conditions. The energy sector in Poland is primarily based on fossil fuels, mainly coal. Hard coal mining is one of the most important industries in Poland. Hard coal deposits in Poland are found in three basins, but mining is currently carried out in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (USCB) and the Lublin Coal Basin (LCB). The Upper Silesian Coal Basin is Poland's central hard coal basin, with the most significant coal production extending across Poland and the Czech Republic. Approximately 80% of proven hard coal resources in Poland are found in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin (USCB). There is a tremendous amount of water in active and abandoned hard coal mines, which must be drained daily. Relatively high temperatures characterize mine water. This study analyzed the geological and hydrogeological conditions of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin and determined the potential for the use of mine waters for energy purposes. Depending on the location of the mine, the volume of mine water inflow ranges from 1 to 60 m3/min. The temperature of the pumped water is between 13 and 25 °C. In Poland, several such pilot installations have already been created; it is worth taking a closer look at the following examples. Heat recovery from mine drainage water can significantly reduce atmospheric emissions, which is particularly important in mining areas affected by low emissions. Therefore, Poland must raise the issue of using mined water for energy purposes, especially when making decisions related to decommissioning mines and developing post-mining areas. Heat pumps (HPs) have become pivotal for heating and cooling applications, serving as sustainable energy solutions. Coupled with renewable energy sources (RES) to run the compressor, which is the major energy-consuming component, they contribute to eco-conscious practices. Notably, their adaptability to be supplied by either alternating (AC) or direct (DC) currents, facilitated through converters, makes them more flexible for versatile renewable energy (RE) applications. This paper presents a comprehensive review of converter topologies employed in various HP applications. The review begins by exploring previous applied photovoltaic (PV)-HP projects, focusing on the gaps in the literature concerning the employed converter topologies. Additionally, the review extends to include a broader examination of the converter topologies that could be employed on the source and load sides of a system powered by a mix of renewable energy sources, such as photovoltaics (PV), wind turbines (WTs), and energy storage systems (ESS), and analyzes their strengths and weaknesses. Special emphasis is given to understanding the various topologies of the power electronics converters in the context of HP applications. The Hewlett Packard Enterprise–Cray EX Frontier is the world's first and fastest exascale supercomputer, hosted at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility in Tennessee, United States. Frontier is a significant electricity consumer, drawing 8–30 MW; this massive energy demand produces significant waste heat, requiring extensive cooling measures. Although harnessing this waste heat for campus heating is a sustainability goal at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the 30 °C–38 °C waste heat temperature poses compatibility issues with standard HVAC systems. Heat pump systems, prevalent in residential settings and some industries, can efficiently upgrade low-quality heat to usable energy for buildings. Thus, heat pump technology powered by renewable electricity offers an efficient, cost-effective solution for substantial waste heat recovery. However, a major challenge is the absence of benchmark data on high-performance computing (HPC) heat generation and waste heat profiles. This paper reports power demand and waste heat measurements from an ORNL HPC data centre, aiming to guide future research on optimizing waste heat recovery in large-scale data centres, especially those of HPC calibre. Frosting is a common phenomenon of the ASHP under the heating mode in winter, and the outdoor air flow rate flowing through the evaporator of the ASHP was always thought to be a major contributor. In order to validate its contribution, effects of outdoor fan airflow rate on the performance of air source heat pumps (ASHPs) were investigated under the winter heating condition. The experiment was conducted in a laboratory at the standard 2 °C air dry bulb temperature (DB)/ 1 °C air wet bulb temperature (WB) frosting condition, which enabled the analysis of the operating performance, frosting performance, and heating performance of the ASHP unit by changing the airflow rate of the outdoor fan. Results showed that as the airflow rate of the outdoor fan reduced from 100% to 36%, the operating performance decline and the elevated frosting-defrosting loss were observed. Meanwhile, both the frosting rate and the operating efficiency during frosting-defrosting cycles showed an increasing trend then followed by decreasing tendency. The maximum frosting rate and operating efficiency were 0.92 g/m².min and 2.92, respectively, which were observed at 74% airflow rate of the outdoor fan of the ASHP unit. The observation implied the existence of the "minimum frosting suppression airflow rate ". At 36% airflow rate of the outdoor fan of the ASHP unit, however, the performance of the ASHP unit was attenuated greatly, with the frosting-defrosting efficiency loss coefficient of 0.47, the heating capacity and COP reduction by 51.5 and 38.8%, respectively. The use of geothermal borehole heat exchangers (BHEs) in combination with ground-source heat pumps represents an important part of shallow geothermal energy production, which is already used worldwide and becoming more and more important. Different measurement techniques are available to examine a BHE field while it is in operation. In this study, a field with 54 BHEs up to a depth of 120 m below ground level was analyzed using fiber optic cables. A distributed temperature sensing (DTS) concept was developed by equipping several BHEs with dual-ended hybrid cables. The individual fiber optics were collected in a distributor shaft, and multiple measurements were carried out during active and inactive operation of the field. The field trial was carried out on a converted, partly retrofitted, residential complex, "Lagarde Campus", in Bamberg, Upper Franconia, Germany. The integration of renewable energy sources (RESs) is rapidly increasing within energy systems worldwide. However, this shift introduces intermittency and uncertainty on the supply side. To hedge against RES intermittency, demand-side flexibility introduces a practical solution. Therefore, further studies are required to unleash demand-side flexibility in power systems. This flexibility is relevant across various sectors of power systems, including residential, industrial, commercial, and agricultural sectors. This paper reviews the key aspects of demand-side flexibility within the residential sector. To achieve this objective, a general introduction to demand flexibility across the four sectors is provided. As a contribution of this paper, and in comparison with previous studies, household appliances are classified based on their flexibility and controllability. The flexibility potential of key residential demands, including heat pumps, district heating, electric vehicles, and battery systems, is then reviewed. Another contribution of this paper is the exploration of demand-side flexibility scheduling under uncertainty, examining three approaches: stochastic programming, robust optimization, and information-gap decision theory. Additionally, the integration of demand flexibility into short-term electricity markets with high-RES penetration is discussed. This paper presents the results of the technical validation of an innovative prototype for drying alfalfa bales. It is based on a 4.1 kW Heat Pump (HP) that uses an advanced technology (optimized for extracting the humidity from the air) and is directly powered by a 6.6 kWp PV generator without grid or batteries support. The main technical challenges of this work were managing solar irradiance fluctuations due to cloud-passing and achieving good drying efficiency. The prototype has been validated for two consecutive drying campaigns in La Rioja (Spain). There were no abrupt stops generated by cloud-passing. The PRPV, which evaluates the performance of the PV system only during the periods when the PV energy can be used by the HP unit, presented values of 0.82 and 0.85, comparable to a well-performing grid-connected PV system. Although the bales' initial relative humidity (RH) ranged from 18 to 30%, all but one of them presented a final RH below 16%, which is the limit point to avoid fermentation. The drying times ranged from 1 to 5 h, and the specific energy consumption per liter of water extracted, from 0.7 to 1.46 kWh/L. These values are comparable to traditional diesel and grid-powered systems. It is worth noting that the agricultural drying market represented USD 1.7 billion in 2023. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As an efficient heating terminal, direct-condensation terminals are increasingly being applied. This study proposes novel direct-condensation heating panels with different aspect ratios, which have been optimized in structure and reduced in copper tube length. To quantify their thermal superiority, the proposed panels' thermal economic performance and system efficiencies are investigated. Compared with previous heating terminals, the vertical temperature difference provided by the proposed panels is reduced by 1.1 ± 0.2 °C, improving thermal comfort. Meanwhile, the system COP is competitive among existing direct-condensation heating terminals. The average heating capacity per cost of the proposed panels reaches 5.4 W/USD, which is 24.1%~46.3% higher than that of previous panels. In addition, the impact of the aspect ratio shows that the panel with a high ratio has advantages in thermal economic performance and system efficiencies. The annual running cost and the system task efficiency of the panel with a ratio of 2.22 are 74.81 USD and 48.5%, respectively, which are 4.7% lower and 0.9% higher than that with a ratio of 0.45, respectively. The developed direct-condensation heating panels help to optimize the heating technology of air source heat pumps, while the evaluation methodology and aspect ratio results are suitable for optimizing other heating terminals. In this study, five drying methods (hot air drying [HD], light wave drying [LD], far infrared drying [FID], freeze drying [FD], and heat pump drying [HPD]) were applied to dry Sargassum fusiforme. The color, rehydration rate (RR), and volatile flavor substances of dried S. fusiforme were compared and analyzed, and the content, molecular weight (Mw), monosaccharide composition, and antioxidant activity of dried S. fusiforme crude polysaccharides (SFCPs) were analyzed. The results showed that S. fusiforme dried by different drying methods showed different colors. FD produced S. fusiforme with better RR (p < 0.05). The Mw of the SFCPs were 624.06, 534.86, 683.00, 1077.13, and 981.91 kDa, respectively, for HD, LD, FID, FD, and HPD. The Mw and DPPH (1,1‐diphenyl‐2‐picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging rates of SFCP‐FD were greater than those of the remaining four drying methods; however, the ABTS (2,2 ′‐azobis‐3‐ethylbenzothiazoline‐6‐sulfonic acid) and OH (hydroxyl) radical scavenging rates were highest in the SFCP‐HPD. GC‐IMS analysis showed that the drying method affected the content and composition of volatile flavor compounds. Principal component analysis (PCA) analysis indicated that the flavors of dried S. fusiforme were quite different from that of fresh S. fusiforme, and the flavors of HD, LD, and FID were similar, while the flavors of FD and HPD were similar. Peltier cells are commonly used in low-power cooling applications, such as automotive refrigerators and electronics temperature regulation systems. These applications are typically low-energy in nature. There is currently a growing emphasis on energy conservation and waste heat utilization in the energy industry. This paper explores the possibility of improving the heating or cooling coefficient of performance (COP) of Peltier cells through intelligent serial and parallel connections. The purpose of this work is to raise the question of whether it would be possible to reconsider the concept of harnessing the "energy" potential of Peltier cells. The utilized model is in line with the current state of the art, and the case study is based on parameters measured on a commercially available Peltier cell. The resulting COP, when considering current materials, remains inferior to the COP of compressor-based heat pumps. The escalating utilisation of second homes has led to an extension in heating periods and, to a certain degree, renovations to elevate the standard, resulting in augmented energy and resource consumption. A comprehensive survey was conducted in Sweden, examining user patterns across different seasons, heating systems, and implemented energy efficiency measures. The results indicate that second homes are occupied for extended periods during the summer season and intermittently throughout the year. Over half of the second homes are heated even when unoccupied, with 12% maintaining a temperature above 16 °C. The predominant heating method is direct electricity (32.2%), followed by heat pumps (29.5%) and stoves (17.5%). A variety of renovations are undertaken, primarily to enhance the standard and technical performance, but also to implement energy efficiency measures such as window replacement, additional insulation, or heat pump installation. Based on the reported user and heating patterns, and the energy renovations carried out, the potential energy savings with different energy renovation strategies were estimated for the Swedish second home stock. The results show that though lowering the temperature when a second home is unoccupied emerges as the most efficient measure, both in terms of cost-effectiveness and climate impact, it needs to be complemented with intermittent heating or dehumidification to ensure that the relative humidity is below critical levels, to avoid the risk of damages caused by, for example, mould growth. Installing a heat pump is the second most energy- and cost-effective measure and has the advantage that the indoor temperature can be maintained at rather high levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Modeling underground temperatures provides a practical application of the one-dimensional heat equation. In this work, the one-dimensional heat equation in surface soil is extended to include heat carried by the vertical flow of rainwater through the soil. Analytical solutions, with and without water flow, illustrate the influence of rainwater circulation on the sub-surface propagation of seasonal temperature variations, an important effect that is generally neglected in textbooks. The surface temperature variations are damped by the soil, and this effect was used by the Troglodytae in Egypt or the Petra in South Jordan to insulate against extreme temperatures. For a realistic case of horizontally layered geology, a finite volume Python code was developed for the same purpose. Subsurface temperatures were also measured over a full year at depths up to 1.8 m and used to estimate the thermal skin depth and thermal wavelength. This study provides students with a practical example of how a textbook physics problem can be modified to extract information of contemporary importance in geophysics and global warming. Editor's Note: Frequently, modeling the three-dimensional world is too challenging for a class exercise, and we instead teach students using unrealistic one-dimensional problems. So it is wonderful when a one-dimensional model turns out not only to be fairly accurate, but also to have real world implications. That is the case with heat flow through the soil, which can be treated with a one-dimensional model, and which is important to energy-efficient solutions such as underground housing and ground-source heat pumps. This paper finds the underground temperature as a function of depth through measurements, analytical solutions, and computational solutions. These solutions can form the basis for a very interesting class assignment. This paper proposes, for the first time, the research concept of comparing energy and economy between transcritical cycle high-temperature heat pumps and subcritical cycle high-temperature heat pumps with new refrigerants. Experiments and simulations are conducted to compare the system performance and economy of two heat pumps, and the effects of different factors on the performance of two heat pumps are analyzed. The results show that R744/R1234yf (90/10) and R515-1 are the preferred refrigerants for transcritical cycle heat pumps and subcritical cycle heat pumps, respectively. The COP of the R744/R1234yf (90/10) transcritical heat pump is generally higher than that of the R515B-1 subcritical heat pump, and compared to the R515B-1 subcritical heat pump, the cost recovery period of the R744/R1234yf (90/10) transcritical heat pump is about 9–15 years. Therefore, it is recommended that users who use heat pumps for a long time choose transcritical cycle heat pumps. Meanwhile, with the change of evaporation temperature, the system COP of the R515B-1 subcritical heat pump and R744/R1234yf (90/10) transcritical heat pump increases by 61.11% and 65.91%, respectively. In addition, the optimal charge amount for the R515B-1 subcritical heat pump is 81.8% of that of the R744/R1234yf (90/10) transcritical heat pump. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study focused on optimizing a model house for different locations and types of thermal systems to understand better how heating system type affects thermal envelope design, operational greenhouse gas emissions, and life-cycle cost. The study investigated six different thermal system configurations in separate optimizations for five locations. Optimization implies reducing energy consumption, minimizing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), lowering operational costs, ensuring regulatory compliance, enhancing resilience, and improving occupant comfort and health. The Pareto front, multi-objective optimization, is used to identify a set of optimal solutions, considering multiple goals that may conflict with each other. In determining the least-cost building design envelope, the design balances costs with other goals, such as energy efficiency and environmental impact. The optimizations determine the life-cycle cost versus operational GHG emissions for a single-detached house in Canadian locations with varying climates, emissions factors, and energy costs. Besides natural gas, the study evaluated four electricity-heated options: (a) an air-source heat pump, (b) a ductless mini-split heat pump, (c) a ground-source heat pump, and (d) an electric baseboard. A net-zero-carbon design with grid-tied photovoltaics was also optimized. Results indicate that the heating system type influences the optimal enclosure design. In each location, at least one all-electric kind of design has a lower life-cycle cost than the optimized gas-heated model, and such designs can mitigate the majority of operational GHG emissions from new housing in locations with a low carbon electricity supply. As the application of renewable energy becomes increasingly extensive, heat pump technology with renewable energy as the heat source is achieving good results. Air-source heat pumps and water-source heat pumps can be widely used in cold areas. In this work, an integrated combined storage and supply system of an air-source heat pump and a water-source heat pump was studied, and the heating characteristics of the system at the beginning, middle, and end of the heating period were examined. It was found that, when the outdoor temperature of the system was very low, the efficiency of the combined storage and supply system reached the highest value of 2.57 when the source-side water tank was kept at 30 °C, and the performance of the combined storage and supply system was better than that of the air-source heat pump and the water-source heat pump in cold regions. Meanwhile, the independent storage of the air-source heat pump and the combined storage and supply system can be used for heating at the beginning and end of the heating period. A cooling tower-assisted ground source heat pump system is proposed to solve the problem of soil heat accumulation in areas with hot summers and mild winters. TRNSYS is used to establish the simulation model of the ground source heat pump system. Taking the ground source heat pump demonstration project in Nanchang City as the research object, the operation effect of the ground source heat pump is simulated and analyzed. The key parameters of the optimization system are proposed, and the operation time of the cooling tower is controlled. The optimization results show that the cooling tower can not only improve the system performance in a short time but also enable long-term stable and efficient operation of the refrigeration system, the compound ground source heat pump system optimized by the cooling tower has almost no soil heat accumulation, and the system performance has been improved. The optimal running time of the cooling tower is 3216~4344 h and 5424~6696 h, and the system running effect is the best at this time. In extremely cold environments, when battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are navigating urban roads at low speeds, the limited heating capacity of the on-board heat pump system and positive temperature coefficient (PTC) device can lead to an inevitable decline in battery temperature, potentially falling below its permissible operating range. This situation can subsequently result in vehicle malfunctions and, in severe cases, traffic accidents. Henceforth, a novel battery self-heating method during driving is proposed to maintain battery temperature. This approach is ingeniously embedded within the heating mechanism within the motor driving system without any necessity to alter or modify the existing driving circuitry. In the meantime, the battery voltage can be regulated to prevent it from surpassing the limit, thereby ensuring the battery's safety. This method introduces the dead zone into the space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) algorithm to form the newly proposed dSVPWM algorithm, which successfully changes the direction of the bus current in a PWM period and forms AC, and the amplitude of the battery alternating current (AC) can also be controlled by adjusting the heating intensity defined by the ratio of the dead zone and the compensation vector to the original zero vector. Through the Simulink model of the motor driving system, the temperature hysteresis locking strategy, grounded in the field-oriented control (FOC) method and employing the dSVPWM algorithm, has been confirmed to provide controllable and sufficiently stable motor speed regulation. During the low-speed phase of the China Light Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), the battery temperature fluctuation is meticulously maintained within a range of ±0.2 °C. The battery's minimum temperature has been successfully locked at around −10 °C. In contrast, the battery temperature would decrease by a significant 1.44 °C per minute without the implementation of the temperature-locking strategy. The voltage of the battery pack is always regulated within the range of 255~378 V. It remains within the specified upper and lower thresholds. The battery voltage overrun can be effectively avoided. Industrial buildings have numerous kinds of energy-losing equipment, such as engines, ovens, boilers and heat exchangers. Energy losses are related to inefficient energy use and lousy work conditions for the people inside the buildings. This work is devoted to the recovery of lost energy from industrial buildings. Firstly, the residual energy of the building is extracted to be used to warm water. Consequently, the work conditions of the people inside industrial buildings can be improved by maintaining the adequate temperature. The recovery of the energy is performed by a multipurpose heat pump system (HP system). The working fluid used in the HP system is R134a, which is a traditional and cheap working fluid. The thermophysical properties of R134a are obtained through the PC-SAFT equation of state. This work presents a performance mapping based on the intercepted areas framework to evaluate which working conditions are the optimal operating variables. The latter depends on several key parameters, such as compressor work, heat delivery, heat absorbed and exergetic efficiency. The results show that the optimal work conditions are found at different condenser and evaporator temperatures, and these may be limited by what the designer considers a sound performance of the heat pump system. A smart city (SC) includes different systems that are highly interconnected. Transportation and energy systems are two of the most important ones that must be operated and planned in a coordinated framework. In this paper, with the complete implementation of the SC, the performance of each of the network elements has been fully analyzed; hence, a nonlinear model has been presented to solve the operation and planning of the SC model. In the literature, water treatment issues, as well as energy hubs, subway systems (SWSs), and transportation systems have been investigated independently and separately. A new method of subway and electric vehicle (EV) interaction has resulted from stored energy obtained from subway braking and EV parking. Hence, considering an SC that simultaneously includes renewable energy, transportation systems such as the subway and EVs, as well as the energy required for water purification and energy hubs, is a new and unsolved challenge. In order to solve the problem, in this paper, by presenting a new system of the SC, the necessary planning to minimize the cost of the system is presented. This model includes an SWS along with plug-in EVs (PEVs) and different distributed energy resources (DERs) such as Photovoltaics (PVs), Heat Pumps (HPs), and stationary batteries. An improved grey wolf optimizer has been utilized to solve the nonlinear optimization problem. Moreover, four scenarios have been evaluated to assess the impact of the interconnection between SWSs and PEVs and the presence of DER technologies in the system. This study is dedicated to an experimental investigation of a passive two-phase ejector used as an expander in a transcritical CO2 heat pump. The investigation focused on the impact of the evaporating temperature (Tevap) and the CO2 gas cooler outlet temperature (Tgc-out) on the ejector and the overall cycle performance. The basic cycle without an ejector was also tested as a baseline for comparison. Two ejectors designed with different modeling approaches were tested and compared. The ejector with an enlarged mixing section diameter was selected for subsequent testing due to its improved pressure lift. The optimum primary nozzle position was found to be 4 times the mixing section diameter (Dmix). Although the ejector was designed for specific conditions, the results demonstrate its ability to remain operational under varying conditions with some changes in performance. The ejector's performance was observed to be dependent on the Tevap, and particularly on the Tgc-out. The pressure lift recorded was in the range of 3.7-6.5 bar, and the lowest value was obtained with the low Tgc-out value (29 °C). Under the tested conditions, the integration of the ejector enhances the performance and the capacity of the heat pump. The ejector cycle improvement is primarily based on improved mass flow rates due to increased compressor suction pressure, reduced compression ratio, and consequently, improved compressor operating conditions. Improvements of up to 18% in heating COP and 20.5% in heating capacity were observed. The study provides valuable insights into enhancing the performance of transcritical CO2 heat pump system by refining ejector design. The aim of this work is the utilization of the secondary steam energy through its thermal transformation in electrodynamic dehydrators developed by the authors. To achieve this goal, the use of heat pumps is proposed. A hypothesis is formulated that the use of electromagnetic energy sources in the process of removing moisture from food solutions, followed by the transformation of secondary steam energy, will allow for the formation of reverse energy flows. A method for calculating energy efficiency in the presence of direct and reverse flows is presented. Multistage dehydrators, where electrodynamic systems are used at the final stage and heat pumps at the previous stages, are analyzed. It is shown that the formation of reverse flows significantly increases the overall energy efficiency. The use of an electrodynamic apparatus at the final stage solves the problems of obtaining a highly concentrated quality solution. The application of heat pumps at the remaining stages allows for the efficient use of secondary steam energy. The most significant result is the matching schemes of heat pumps with the dehydrator and the environment. The importance of the work lies in the substantiation and confirmation of the high energy efficiency of organizing reverse energy flows, and the proposed installation with combined systems — electrodynamic and heat pump. By calculation, the modes have been established in which the overall efficiency for two-stage apparatuses with heat pumps can be increased from 0.4 to 0.6, and for four-stage dehydrators from 0.4 to 0.8.

This paper describes a two-year high-fidelity dataset for an ultra-low energy office building and living laboratory called HouseZero®. The building integrates multiple low-energy technologies, such as natural ventilation with automatic windows, ground source heat pump, and thermally activated building systems. The building's performance is continuously monitored with an extensive sensor network. The dataset consists of breakdown energy end uses, photovoltaic (PV) production, zone-level indoor environment including indoor air temperature, CO2 concentration, and relative humidity, micro-climatical conditions, building façade temperature, and detailed system operations including zone-level BTU meter, valve status, slab temperature, window/skylight opening status, heat pump, and geothermal well operations. The incorporation of ejectors into heat pump and refrigeration cycles has been the subject of growing interest, largely due to their simple structure, high reliability, and cost-effectiveness. This paper investigates the recent advancements in novel design concepts of ejector-enhanced vapor compression heat pump and refrigeration cycles. An overview of novel single-stage and two-stage compression cycles utilizing a single or multiple ejectors is provided. First, the system setup, operational principles, description, and figures of the existing schemes are provided. Second, the main results, such as the coefficient of performance (COP), volumetric heating capacity and exergy destruction, are discussed. In conclusion, the paper presents a coherent summary of the current developments, future prospects, and the current knowledge gap. A plethora of research is present in developing theoretical systems with high efficiency. However, experimental tests for real-life implementations are limited. The ternary transition metal boride Fe2AlB2 is a unique ferromagnetic "MAB" phase that demonstrates a sizable magnetocaloric effect near room temperature—a feature that renders this material suitable for magnetic heat pump devices (MHP), a promising alternative to conventional vapor compression technology. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of the material properties of Fe2AlB2 (magnetofunctional response, transport properties, and mechanical stability) and discuss alloy synthesis from the perspective of shaping these materials as porous active magnetic regenerators in MHPs. Salient aspects of the coupled magnetic and structural phase transitions are critically assessed to elucidate the fundamental origin of the functional response. The goal is to provide insight into strategies to tune the magnetofunctional response via elemental substitution and microstructure optimization. The study was carried out to evaluate theoretically and in laboratory conditions the capacity of a hybrid heating and cooling system that sustainably uses thermal energy extracted from surface waters in order to decarbonize buildings located near water sources. The novelty of the research consists in the realization of two experimental systems, one for the rapid evaluation of the performance of the water–water heat pump heating system and one for the evaluation of the operating behavior of a cooling system with fan coil units. Starting with the heating and cooling demand, and the climatic and hydrological local characteristics, a hybrid system model for the heating and cooling of the analyzed building was established and implemented. The forecasted energy consumption and CO2 emissions for the operation of the new equipment were compared with the historical values of the old systems with which the building was equipped (thermal energy supply from the district heating and cooling system with an air conditioning unit). Also, the results were extrapolated for forecasting the energy potential of the surface waters. The study highlights a percentage reduction in annual energy consumption of 67.71% and CO2 emissions of 80.13% through the implementation of the hybrid system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This feasibility study investigates extracting thermal energy from the Bedretto tunnel in the Swiss Alps, which benefits from subsurface heat flux and rock overburden insulation. Using the simulation software COMSOL Multiphysics, we created a numerical model of the tunnel environment to evaluate which medium between rock, air, and water serves as the most effective heat source. Our findings indicate that flowing water is the most effective heat source. Potential applications include distributing the water to nearby villages and storing remaining heat in the subsurface. Estimates indicate that the total extractable thermal energy ranges between 0.8 MWth and 1.5 MWth after reducing the water temperature to 4 °C via a heat pump. The study identifies the most suitable energy sourcing locations based on efficiency and investment costs. Circulating water to individual heat pumps in Bedretto, with the natural elevation difference, enables water transport without a pump. Cost analyses reveal that the investment in piping and heat pumps can be amortized within the equipment's lifespan with appropriate economic models. With the same initial investments, district heating systems are viable in villages with over 30 connections. The present study investigates the incorporation of renewable rooftop photovoltaic systems in fully electrified residential buildings and estimates the zero-energy demand building potential in relation to the climatic data of Greece. Specifically, the aim of the analysis is to calculate the maximum possible number of stories and therefore the total building height for a complete transformation to zero-net-energy building. The energy analysis, which is conducted using the DesignBuilder software, focuses on single-floor up to seven-story buildings. The importance of the present work lies in the acknowledgment of the diversity of the Greek residential sector, the adherence to national energy policies, and the European goal of fully electrified buildings. The examined case studies are equipped with electrically driven air-to-air heat pumps serving the space heating and cooling demands and with an air-to-water heat pump covering the domestic hot water requirements. The investigated locations are the four main cities of Greece, Athens, Thessaloniki, Chania, and Kastoria, which represent the country's four climatic categories. The conducted analysis allows for the mapping of the zero-energy building potential for the climatic data of Greece, demonstrating the possibility of striking a positive building energy balance through the integration of on-site renewable energy sources and the production of necessary electrical energy. The novelty of the present work lies in the identification of a key factor, namely, the building height, which determines the feasibility of transforming multifamily buildings into zero-energy buildings. According to the analysis results, the critical number of stories is calculated at six for Chania, five for Athens, four for Thessaloniki, and two for Kastoria. Regarding a three-story residential building, the incorporation of a renewable photovoltaic system can result in an annual surplus electricity production of 13,741 kWh (Chania), 10,424 kWh (Athens), and 6931 kWh (Thessaloniki), and a corresponding coverage of 100% (Chania), 69.0% (Athens), 38.9% (Thessaloniki) and 0% (Kastoria). Thermoacoustic air-to-water air source heat pumps (TAWASHP) are the eco-friendly, simple, compressor less, low cost and likely looking future substitute for the existing compressor-based heat pumps. In this work, the design optimization of the 1-kW TAWASHP with helium for the temperature difference of 15 to 70 K for pumping heat from the atmospheric air to water using the linear thermoacoustic concepts was discussed. The optimized design can fit for both cooling and water heating applications without wasting the heat rejection to the surrounding atmosphere, rather supplied to the insulated hot water tank. The optimized one-fourth wavelength resonator TAWASHP shows the coefficient of performance of 1.1 to 2.34. The theoretical results are validated with the DeltaEC software results, and the results are in concurrence with each other. The DeltaEC predicts the TAWASHP can supply 1.55 to 3.35 kW of heat to water, which is equivalent to 37.3 to 80.3 kWh of heat energy per day. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thermoacoustic heat pumps are a promising heating technology that utilizes medium/low-grade heat to reduce reliance on electricity. This study proposes a single direct-coupled configuration for a thermoacoustic heat pump, aimed at minimizing system complexity and making it suitable for domestic applications. Numerical investigations were conducted under typical household heating conditions, including performance analysis, exergy loss evaluation, and axial distribution of key parameters. Results show that the proposed thermoacoustic heat pump achieves a heating capacity of 5.7 kW and a coefficient of performance of 1.4, with a heating temperature of 300 °C and a heat-sink temperature of 55 °C. A comparison with existing absorption heat pumps reveals favorable adaptability for large temperature lift applications. A case study conducted in Finland over an annual cycle analyzes the economic and environmental performance of the system, identifying two distinct modes based on the driving heat source: medium temperature (= 250 °C) and low temperature (< 250 °C), both of which exhibit favorable heating performance. When the thermoacoustic heat pump is driven by waste heat, energy savings of 20.1 MWh/year, emission reductions of 4143 kgCO2/year, and total environmental cost savings of 1629 €/year are obtained. These results demonstrate the potential of the proposed thermoacoustic heat pump as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly option for domestic building heating using medium/low-grade heat sources. The traditional evaporator of water source heat pump system is easy to freeze when the water source temperature is too low in winter. A novel ice source heat pump system is proposed, which can use low temperature surface water to supply heat to buildings. One of the key problems for safe transportation is velocity range of ice slurry in ice outlet pipeline. In order to study the critical flow velocity of ice slurry in the pipe, an Euler model of horizontal straight pipe and 90° elbow pipe were established by Fluent software. The influence of five factors on the critical flow velocity of two kinds of pipes, including initial ice packing fraction, ice particle size, pipe diameter, length of straight pipe and radius curvature of elbow was studied. It found that the initial ice content should be controlled from 10% to 15%. The inlet flow rate was 20% higher than the critical flow rate under the most unfavorable condition. Ice particle size was less than 0.2 mm. The total length of ice discharge pipeline was less than 50 m. The deteriorating thermal environment of tunnels and the increase in energy consumption of environmental control systems has become highlights in the subway field. In existing research related to analysis of subway tunnel thermal environments and thermal accumulation; there is no predictive law that accounts for thermal accumulation or the long-term change in subway tunnel thermal environments. In this study, a combination of simulations and experiments is used. First, the long-term evolution of tunnel thermal environments with and without thermal interference are predicted and analyzed. Then, the changes in the tunnel thermal environment after the use of capillary heat exchangers are explored. The research results indicate that the model of the system has high accuracy and reliability. When there is a capillary heat exchanger installed in the subway tunnel, the anti-seasonal heat storage characteristics of the system result in the tunnel temperature increasing significantly in summer and decreasing significantly in winter, with a small decrease in the average annual temperature. There is an increasingly rich literature on the decarbonisation of heat and the evolution of heat networks. This paper investigates whether a novel fifth Generation District Heating and Cooling Network (5GDHC) could be retrofitted to an existing National Health Service (NHS) hospital campus for the purpose of heating and cooling. The building load was simulated and input into a custom-written script to carry out a series of parametric studies and optimise design options. The model was calibrated against site data available from hospital facilities management. The research found that it is feasible to use a 5GDHC consisting of a large single mass of water to utilise inter-seasonal thermal storage. A natural water resource such as an aquifer was not required. The model tested sizing options and found that larger thermal storage, heat pumps and chillers reduce operating costs and improve flexibility. The paper closes with a discussion of the practical factors in retrofitting 5GDHC networks to a densely occupied and highly constrained campus environment. Air-source heat pumps (ASHPs), as an active device, are widely used in building heating and cooling processes. However, in severe cold regions, they face reduced heating efficiency and frosting problems in winter. This paper proposes a new heating solution by coupling an ASHP with passive heating systems. It combines an ASHP with passive sunrooms and heat storage systems for heating. Through software simulations and mathematical modeling, the new scheme is compared and analyzed against traditional ASHP solutions to explore the performance of this scheme in rural houses in severe cold regions of China during winter. According to simulation and calculation analysis, on the coldest day of winter, the coupling scheme can provide approximately 99.41 kWh of heat to the indoors, which exceeds the 86.67 kWh required to maintain an indoor temperature of 20 °C. The system's power consumption is 36.96 kWh, which is 66.88% lower than that of traditional heat pump heating. The study shows that the coupling system of an ASHP and passive heating has a good heating effect in severe cold regions. The forthcoming implementation of national policies towards hydrogen blending into the natural gas grid will affect the technical and economic parameters that must be taken into account in the design of building heating systems. This study evaluates the implications of using hydrogen-enriched natural gas (H2NG) blends in condensing boilers and Gas Adsorption Heat Pumps (GAHPs) in a residential building in Rome, Italy. The analysis considers several parameters, including non-renewable primary energy consumption, CO2 emissions, Levelized Cost of Heat (LCOH), and Carbon Abatement Cost (CAC). The results show that a 30% hydrogen blend achieves a primary energy consumption reduction of 12.05% and 11.19% in boilers and GAHPs, respectively. The presence of hydrogen in the mixture exerts a more pronounced influence on the reduction in fossil primary energy and CO2 emissions in condensing boilers, as it enhances combustion efficiency. The GAHP system turns out to be more cost-effective due to its higher efficiency. At current hydrogen costs, the LCOH of both technologies increases as the volume fraction of hydrogen increases. The forthcoming cost reduction in hydrogen will reduce the LCOH and the decarbonization cost for both technologies. At low hydrogen prices, the CAC for boilers is lower than for GAHPs; therefore, replacing boilers with other gas technologies rather than electric heat pumps increases the risk of creating stranded assets. In conclusion, blending hydrogen into the gas grid can be a useful policy to reduce emissions from the overall natural gas consumption during the process of end-use electrification, while stimulating the development of a hydrogen economy. Achieving a zero-emission building heating sector requires numerous strategies and detailed energy planning, in order to identify the optimal decarbonisation pathway. This work aims to assess the impact of district heating expansion and the implementation of energy-saving measures on the decarbonisation of the Italian building stock by 2050, analysing their combined impact, reciprocal effects, and technical–economic implications on the entire national energy system. The scenarios have been implemented and simulated with the H2RES software, a long-term energy planning optimisation model, built for the Italian national energy system. Results indicate that it is possible to decarbonise the heating system in an efficient and cost-effective manner by the year 2040. Heat pumps represent the optimal technology at both centralised and decentralised levels. District heating expansion is a priority for the decarbonisation of the building stock, allowing us to reduce costs, exploit thermal storage systems and provide system flexibility. In the best scenario, 40% of the Italian heat demand can be supplied by fourth-generation district heating. Energy-saving measures can reduce heat demand and primary energy but at higher annual costs and with a significant increase in investment. The combined simulation of the strategies within an optimisation model of the entire energy system enables the accurate assessment of the real impact of the various measures, considering their reciprocal effects and technical–economic implications.
