ABSTRACT:There are many theories and approaches on the theoretical basis of social work professional practices. The empowerment approach is an approach that focuses on the client's strengths and can be used in different problem areas. Elderly neglect and abuse is one of the problem areas that social work deals with. In this review study, topics such as elderly neglect and abuse, concepts of power and empowerment, social work and empowerment approach are included. Then, based on the empowerment approach for elderly individuals exposed to neglect and abuse, strategies for three dimensions of empowerment: personal, interpersonal and institutional, are discussed. These strategies are stated as improving self-efficacy, increasing group awareness, reducing self-blame, and increasing personal responsibility. For each strategy in three different dimensions of empowerment, the perspective of the elderly individual before and after empowerment is discussed. Thus, it has been revealed what difference empowerment strategies can make at micro, mezzo and macro dimensions. In this study, unlike previous reviews, it is aimed to present an idea about which concrete strategies the empowerment approach, which is an theoretical approach in the knowledge base of social work, can be addressed in the problem of elderly neglect and abuse.

Armed conflict and displacement disrupt the social, economic, and cultural networks necessary for individuals' and families' well-being. Interventions are necessary to repair this damage, as there are an estimated 40 million people displaced worldwide due to conflict and violence. This article describes the Dialogue Groups, a community-based intervention in post-conflict northern Uganda, focusing on social disruptions such as men's decreased involvement in the family, women's increased responsibilities at home and in the family, and increased violent behavior in homes. Reported outcomes include increased connection among community members and within homes, decreased genderbased violence, and increased livelihood opportunities. The intervention utilized an empowerment approach and demonstrated that community-driven and community-led interventions addressing social disruptions of conflict and displacement are viable and can meet the goals of a social development agenda. Background and Objectives: There is a paucity of literature on the dietary attitude (DA) of patients with type 2 diabetes in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Although the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) is high in Gulf countries, there remains a lack of understanding of the importance of dietary behavior in diabetes management among patients. Understanding the behavior of patients with diabetes towards the disease requires knowledge of their DA. Therefore, this study aimed to assess and evaluate the DA of type 2 diabetes patients, and it is the first of its kind in the KSA. Material and Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted among 350 patients with type 2 diabetes. A self-administered DA questionnaire was used to collect the data. Psychometric properties of the questionnaire were assessed by face validity, content validity, exploratory factor analysis, and internal consistency reliability. The data were collected using a systematic random sampling technique. Results: The overall DA of the patients was inappropriate (p = 0.014). Patients had an inappropriate DA towards food selection (p = 0.003), healthy choices (p = 0.005), food restraint (p < 0.001), health impact (p < 0.001), and food categorization (p = 0.033). A poor DA was also observed in relation to the consumption of red meat (p p < 0.001), soup and sauces (p = 0.040), dairy products (p = 0.015), and junk food (p < 0.001). Conclusions: It is highly recommended that patients with diabetes receive counseling with an empowerment approach, as this can bring about changes in their dietary behavior, which is deeply rooted in their daily routine. Healthcare providers should also be well-informed about patients’ attitudes and beliefs towards diabetes to design tailored educational and salutary programs for this specific community. Diabetes self-management educational programs should also be provided on a regular basis with a special emphasis on diet and its related components.

Şiddete maruz kalan kadınlara yönelik tedavi ve rehabilite edici sosyal hizmet müdahalelerinde bulunulurken hırpalanmış kadın sendromunun değerlendirilerek psikososyal müdahalelerin planlanması ve uygulanması önemli görülmektedir., Violence against women is among the most important public health problems experienced worldwide, threatening the biopsychosocial health of women and causing their injuries and deaths. Physical violence can be a source of battered woman syndrome as well as causing injuries and even death to women. Learned helplessness, anxiety, depression, cognitive distortions, and deterioration of interpersonal relationships can be seen in women who have been exposed to physical violence by their spouses/partners for a long time, related to battered woman syndrome in the cycle of violence. This study aims to examine battered woman syndrome and psychosocial intervention approaches. For this aim, the psychosocial intervention approaches that can be used in practices for battered woman syndrome, the cycle of violence, learned helplessness and physical violence, empowerment approach, solution-focused brief therapy approach and feminist therapy approaches are mentioned. It can be stated that psychosocial interventions considered within the framework of these approaches can have an important function in ending the cycle of violence and empowering them. In addition, feminist therapy and solution-focused brief therapy practices can support skills such as self-awareness and self-efficacy in women exposed to violence and suffering from battered woman syndrome. While providing treatment and rehabilitative social work interventions for women exposed to violence, it is considered important to evaluate the battered woman syndrome and to plan and implement psychosocial interventions.

Suicidal behavior is associated with many internal and external causes in the literature. Before and after suicidal behavior, which includes complex problems, the possibilities offered by medicine are often used to ensure well-being. In this compilation study, rather than the material factors that cause suicidal behavior and preventive concrete bio-psycho-social measures; the forces that exist in the face of suicide and in the essence of human life are mentioned. The aim of the study is to ensure that all professional staff working in the field of suicide, especially social workers, gain awareness about these power sources. At the root of the problems, there may be more comprehensive elements including the knowledge of history and origin and belonging as well as the individual background of the people. It is thought that these can both cause problems and guide the solution. At the point where modern psychiatry talks about going down to the childhood of individuals with the popular therapy approach, unresolved problems and unavoidable suicide attempts show us that we need much more comprehensive data., İntihar davranışı literatürde içsel ve dışsal birçok neden ile ilişkilendirilmektedir.

Summary: Dear Colleagues, The rapidly changing field of medicine and healthcare is increasingly adopting scientific and technological innovations, making interdisciplinary collaborations especially important. In this context, medical disciplines are becoming increasingly interlinked with other specialities and fields. A more interdisciplinary approach to the patient is needed, especially for complex patients with numerous comorbidities, most of whom are usually elderly and fragile. The greatest challenges to human health lie at the intersection of different medical fields. An interdisciplinary medical team is increasingly necessary with the rapid expansion of medical knowledge. Given the importance of interdisciplinarity in the field of medicine and research, the international journal Medicina-Lithuania has launched this Special Issue. The Special Issue has attracted the interest of different groups of researchers, and very interesting articles from different countries. Reviews or original articles dealing with interdisciplinary medical problems, as well as articles providing an up-to-date overview of the diagnostic protocols and treatments for patients with multiple comorbidities have been published. I thank all the authors for sharing their research and wish all readers a fruitful and stimulating read! Assoc. Prof. Dr. Camelia DIACONU Guest Editor

Spirituality; has begun to have a growing popularity in the academic literature. This popularity has also shown itself in the discipline of social work. Social work is a scientific discipline that centers on people, and thinks of helping them. It is necessary for social work to face the fact that it is necessary to recognize people from all sides and to try understand them in order to fulfill the function of service concept, which is inherent because of that it, would be against the purpose of help to intervene in them without understanding the human being. This is where spirituality comes into play as one of the fundamental dimensions that influence social work discipline at this point. Another concept emphasized in social work discipline is empowerment. The common point in social work definitions and their explanations is the notion of power and empowerment. In social work practice, a paradigm shift by focusing on the strong aspects of the client and an empowering approach that leads to a new way of thinking move through traditions, beliefs, values, spirituality, talents, resources, achievements of the clients. In recent studies, it is known that one of the most fundamental sources motivating the individual is spirituality. In this context, the role of spirituality in empowerment is an undeniable reality. Focusing on the resources and strengths of the clients is possible by including spirituality in the context of social work practices. Spirituality is a good resource that can be used in empowerment context. However, some dimensions of spirituality can also create a weakening effect and weaken some clients. It can be said that spirituality is one of the factors that influence the empowerment process, and that some dimensions may have a weakening effect. The main purpose of study in this context is to try to reveal the relation of spirituality and empowerment in social work practice by referring to the concepts of spirituality, empowerment and social work.

Introduction: Research on the intimate partnerships of female sex workers (FSWs) tends to focus on the risks associated with these relationships. This paper takes as its starting point that the situation of FSWs is better understood by including knowledge of the benefits of their intimate partnerships. Specifically, we employ the conceptual framework provided by emergent research examining intimacy as a complex fusion of affective and instrumental dimensions among sex workers. This perspective allows us to frame information about FSWs' intimate partnerships within a behaviour-structural approach that is helpful for identifying how intimate partnerships can be a source of both benefit as well as increased risk to FSWs. Methods: Our results are based on a mixed-methods study carried out in the summer of 2011 in Kibera, Kenya. We conducted face-to-face interviews (n=30) with a non-probability sample of FSWs stratified by age who self-identified as Human Immune Virus positive (HIV+). We asked about participants' involvement in current and past intimate partnerships, and whether these relationships had a positive or negative impact on their health and well?being. Results: Participants currently in intimate partnerships had fewer clients and thus lower incomes than those without intimate partnerships. Participants presently with partners were also more likely to receive some financial support from partners, to report lower intimate partner violence, and to narrate higher partner emotional support and greater assistance with medications. These participants were also more likely to have disclosed their sex work and HIV+ statuses to their partners. Intimate partnerships, on the other hand, showed increased risk of economic vulnerability and emotional dependence for FSWs. This became especially problematic for those participants in fragile relationships. Despite these variations, none of the differences between the two groups were statistically significant. Conclusions: Intimacy and transactional relations are bound up with one another and intersect with the structural realities and vulnerabilities; this is the case for sex workers in well-resourced and resourced-constrained countries alike. Rather than treating intimate partnerships as distinct from transactional relationships, FSWs' relationships should be viewed on a continuum of risk and support. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Self-determination and the ability to express opinions and preferences are fundamental to all people. Some people with intellectual disability no longer accept a subordinated role as disabled and new self-advocacy groups have evolved. The aim of this study was to analyse the meaning and importance of engagement in a self-advocacy group for self-advocates daily life and identity. An interpretative abductive approach was used to analyse data from interviews with 26 self-advocates from six self-advocacy groups in Sweden in relation to the theoretical concepts; recognition, social capital, culture capital and self-determination. The key finding is that the vast majority of the participants experienced a changed self-perception, as more skilled, social and confident people, depending on group affiliation, their personal engagement and positions within the group. The conclusion is that self-advocacy is important for daily life and identity of people with intellectual disability. The self-organized movements indicate an important change in society and the results are of importance not only for the target group but for shaping future support and treatment from society of people with intellectual disability. © 2017 The Author(s).

- Abstract
Background and Objectives : There is a paucity of literature on the dietary attitude (DA) of patients with type 2 diabetes in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Results: The overall DA of the patients was inappropriate ( p = 0.014). Patients had an inappropriate DA towards food selection ( p = 0.003), healthy choices( p = 0.005), food restraint ( p < 0.001), health impact ( p < 0.001), and food categorization ( p = 0.033). A poor DA was also observed in relation to the consumption of red meat( p < 0.001), rice ( p < 0.001), soup and sauces ( p = 0.040), dairy products ( p = 0.015), and junk food( p < 0.001). Conclusions: It is highly recommended that patients with diabetes receive counseling with an empowerment approach, as this can bring about changes in their dietary behavior, which is deeply rooted in their daily routine. Healthcare providers should also be well-informed about patients' attitudes and beliefs towards diabetes to design tailored educational and salutary programs for this specific community. Diabetes self-management educational programs should also be provided on a regular basis with a special emphasis on diet and its related components., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest.

This thesis attempts to determine the type of development being promoted by the practice of micro-credit. It explores the links between the approach to micro-credit, the practice of micro-credit and the understanding of development informing both. It establishes that a market approach is informed by an economic-centered, individualist, reformist understanding of development while the empowerment approach is informed by a power-focused, collectivist, transformative understanding of development. Although it is the market approach which is widely promoted within the development industry, it is the empowerment approach which has the greatest potential to contribute to genuine development.

This perspective allows us to frame information about FSWs’ intimate partnerships within a behaviour-structural approach that is helpful for identifying how intimate partnerships can be a source of both benefit as well as increased risk to FSWs. Methods: Our results are based on a mixed-methods study carried out in the summer of 2011 in Kibera, Kenya. We conducted face-to-face interviews (n=30) with a non-probability sample of FSWs stratified by age who self-identified as Human Immune Virus positive (HIV+). We asked about participants’ involvement in current and past intimate partnerships, and whether these relationships had a positive or negative impact on their health and well‐being. Rather than treating intimate partnerships as distinct from transactional relationships, FSWs’ relationships should be viewed on a continuum of risk and support.
