This article presents a collection of simulation studies using the ECCE detector concept in the context of the EIC's exclusive, diffractive, and tagging physics program, which aims to further explore the rich quark–gluon structure of nucleons and nuclei. To successfully execute the program, ECCE proposed to utilize the detector system close to the beamline to ensure exclusivity and tag ion beam/fragments for a particular reaction of interest. Preliminary studies confirm the proposed technology and design satisfy the requirements. The projected physics impact results are based on the projected detector performance from the simulation at 10 or 100 fb−1 of integrated luminosity. Additionally, insights related to a potential second EIC detector are documented, which could serve as a guidepost for future development. How the bulk of the Universe's visible mass emerges and how it is manifest in the existence and properties of hadrons are profound questions that probe into the heart of strongly interacting matter. Paradoxically, the lightest pseudoscalar mesons appear to be the key to the further understanding of the emergent mass and structure mechanisms. These mesons, namely the pion and kaon, are the Nambu-Goldstone boson modes of QCD. Unravelling their partonic structure and the interplay between emergent and Higgs-boson mass mechanisms is a common goal of three interdependent approaches -- continuum QCD phenomenology, lattice-regularised QCD, and the global analysis of parton distributions -- linked to experimental measurements of hadron structure. Experimentally, the foreseen electron-ion collider will enable a revolution in our ability to study pion and kaon structure, accessed by scattering from the "meson cloud" of the proton through the Sullivan process. With the goal of enabling a suite of measurements that can address these questions, we examine key reactions to identify the critical detector system requirements needed to map tagged pion and kaon cross sections over a wide range of kinematics. The excellent prospects for extracting pion structure function and form factor data are shown, and similar prospects for kaon structure are discussed in the context of a worldwide programme. Successful completion of the programme outlined herein will deliver deep, far-reaching insights into the emergence of pions and kaons, their properties, and their role as QCD's Goldstone boson modes., 73 pages, 27 figures

Using a simple geometric framework with a realistic nuclear density distribution, we fit published HERMES data to determine fundamental properties of hadronization using the nuclear medium as a spatial analyzer. Our approach uses a fit to the transverse momentum broadening observable and the hadronic multiplicity ratio; the simultaneous fit to two different observables strongly constrains the outcome. Using the known sizes of the target nuclei, we extract the color lifetime, finding a z$\mathrm{_h}$-dependent range of values from 2 to 8 fm/c for these data. We also extract estimates for the $\hat{q}$ transport coefficient characterizing the strength of the interaction between the quark and the cold nuclear medium, finding an average value of 0.035$\pm$0.011 GeV$\mathrm{^2}$/fm. With a three-parameter model we obtain satisfactory fits to the data with a goodness-of-fit parameter $\chi ^2$/dof of 1.1 or less. In a secondary fit of the results from that model we independently find a value for the Lund String Model string tension of 1.00$\pm$0.05 GeV/fm. We evaluated the sensitivity for extracting quark energy loss and effective in-medium hadronic cross sections using four-parameter variants of the model, finding large uncertainties in both cases. Our results suggest that hadronic interaction of forming hadrons in the nuclear medium is the primary dynamical cause of meson attenuation in the HERMES data, with quark energy loss playing a more minor role., Comment: 13 pages in total, 5 figures, 1 table, supplementary material starting page 11, Physics Letters B, Volume 816, 2021, 136171

This paper discusses the quality and performance of currently available PbWO$_4$ crystals of relevance to high-resolution electromagnetic calorimetry, e.g. detectors for the Neutral Particle Spectrometer at Jefferson Lab or those planned for the Electron-Ion Collider. Since the construction of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and early PANDA (The antiProton ANnihilations at DArmstadt) electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) the worldwide availability of high quality PbWO$_4$ production has changed dramatically. We report on our studies of crystal samples from SICCAS/China and CRYTUR/Czech Republic that were produced between 2014 and 2019., Comment: 20 pages, 30 figures

Particle IDentification (PID) is a central requirement of the experiments at the future EIC. Hadron PID at high momenta by RICH techniques requires the use of low density gaseous radiators, where the challenge is the limited length of the radiator region available at a collider experiment. By selecting a photon wavelength range in the far UV domain, around 120 nm, the number of detectable photons can be increased. Ideal sensors are gaseous Photon Detectors (PD) with CsI photocathode, where the status of the art is represented by the MPGD-based PDs at COMPASS RICH. Detector optimization is required for the application at EIC. Here we report about a dedicated prototype where the sensor pad-size has been reduced to preserve the angular resolution. We discuss how photoproduction and electroproduction processes will provide a precise tool to study nuclear structure in the small-$x$ region in the future Electron-Ion Collider. In particular, we emphasize how exclusive vector meson production at the EIC can be used to accurately map the gluonic density profile of nuclei, including its event-by-event fluctuations. We examine the possibility that one could measure partonic charge symmetry violation (CSV) by comparing neutrino or antineutrino production through charged-current reactions induced by electrons or positrons at a possible electron collider at the LHC. We calculate the magnitude of CSV that might be expected at such a facility. We show that this is likely to be a several percent effect, substantially larger than the typical CSV effects expected for partonic reactions., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

This White Paper presents the science case of an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), focused on the structure and interactions of gluon-dominated matter, with the intent to articulate it to the broader nuclear science community. It was commissioned by the managements of Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) with the objective of presenting a summary of scientific opportunities and goals of the EIC as a follow-up to the 2007 NSAC Long Range plan. This document is a culmination of a community-wide effort in nuclear science following a series of workshops on EIC physics and, in particular, the focused ten-week program on "Gluons and quark sea at high energies" at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Fall 2010. It contains a brief description of a few golden physics measurements along with accelerator and detector concepts required to achieve them, and it benefited from inputs from the users' communities of BNL and JLab. This White Paper offers the promise to propel the QCD science program in the U.S., established with the CEBAF accelerator at JLab and the RHIC collider at BNL, to the next QCD frontier., Comment: The Second Edition, 164 pages

The contributions the individual quark and antiquark flavors, the valence quarks in the nucleon spin are obtained in the deep inelastic scattering longitudinally polarized leptons off longitudinally polarized protons, neutrons and deuterons with charged current for the experiments at Electron-Ion Collider. The radiative corrections to the measurable asymmetries are discussed.

The hadron formation is, in the framework of the quantum chromodynamics theory (QCD), a non-perturbative process; this characteristic leads to important theoretical challenges. This is why experimental measurements of fragmentation in nuclei are a necessity in order to obtain substantial progress in our understanding of the mechanisms of hadron formation. The thesis begins with the introduction of theoretical background, followed by an overview of theoretical models. The thesis continues with the analysis of Jefferson Lab data obtained with a 5 GeV electron beam incident on various targets (2H, C, Al, Fe, Sn and Pb). The reaction products are measured with the CLAS spectrometer of Hall B. The main results are: (a) a multi-dimensional analysis of the measured observables, which permits a better confrontation with theoretical models and the extraction of temporal information on fragmentation, and (b) the observation of a non linear hadronic attenuation as a function of the target’s nuclear radius. The PyQM event generator, developed to reproduce the data from the HERMES collaboration, is also presented. The results are ambivalent, the theoretical basis used does not seem to apply to the studied case, however, some characteristics of the data are reproduced allowing to understand their origin, which is sometimes unexpected. Finally, the possibilities for future experiments, at Jefferson Lab and at an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), are explored., La formation des hadrons est, dans le cadre de la théorie quantique de couleur (QCD), un processus non-perturbatif ; cette caractéristique entraîne d’importantes difficultés théoriques. C’est pourquoi, les mesures expérimentales de fragmentation dans différents noyaux sont une nécessité afin d’obtenir des progrès tangibles dans la compréhension des mécanismes de formation des hadrons. La thèse commence par les bases théoriques nécessaires à une telle approche, suivies des principaux modèles qui lui sont associés.La thèse se poursuit par l’analyse de données de Jefferson Lab obtenues à l’aide d’un faisceau d’électrons de 5 GeV incident sur différentes cibles (2H, C, Al, Fe, Sn et Pb). Les produits de la réaction sont mesurés avec le spectromètre CLAS. Les principaux résultats de cette expérience sont : (a) l’analyse multi-dimensionnelle des observables mesurées, qui permet une meilleure confrontation avec les modèles théoriques et l’extraction d’informations temporelles sur la fragmentation, et (b) l’observation d’une atténuation hadronique non-linéaire en fonction du rayon du noyau cible. Dans une partie plus théorique, le générateur d’événements PyQM, développé dans le but de reproduire les données de la collaboration HERMES, est présenté. Les résultats sont mitigés, en effet la base théorique utilisée ne semble pas s’appliquer au cas étudié, néanmoins certaines caractéristiques des données sont reproduites permettant de comprendre leurs origines parfois inattendues. Enfin, les possibilités d’expériences futures, à Jefferson Lab et dans un collisionneur ion-électron (EIC), sont explorées.
