Lea Pulkkinen, born in Finland in 1939, is Emerita Professor of Psychology at the University of Jyväskylä (Finland). She is best known for creating the ongoing Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Personality and Social Development (JLSPSD). The study was specifically intended to test the hypothesis that the human brain allows for more variation in behavior than the simple ‘fight or flight’ response observed in animal studies of aggression. She further hypothesized that humans’ capacity for cognitive control over emotional behavior was the key factor involved in controlling aggressive behavior. These hypotheses led her to devise an impulse control model to depict behavioral alternatives, which she tested with teacher and peer ratings of aggressive and nonaggressive behaviors. Forty years later, the JLSPSD revealed the long-term significance of self-regulation for socio-emotional behavior. Results from the study showed that aggressive behavior during childhood tends to be associated with other types of under-controlled behavior during adulthood. This chapter explores how growing up environments and landscapes are remembered, described and depicted in autobiographies written by people who experienced the reconstruction era in northern Finland in their childhood and youth. The article is based on a collection of submissions to the essay called “Generations of Youth” in 2010 and archived in the Finnish Folklore Archives. The texts provide an interesting opportunity to investigate the cultural meanings attached to growing up environments, mindscapes, and places of childhood and youth in post-war Finland. The chapter combines approaches from the fields of history as well as humanistic geography. It addresses the question of how children and youth of the 1950s and 1960s built and reconstructed their identities and memories through different environments, places, and landscapes. The narratives depict the rural landscape and northern nature as particularly emotional sites, ones through which memories and emotions attached to childhood are articulated. The rural landscape becomes emblematic of safety, tranquillity, and happiness, even though rural life is also described in terms of poverty, shortages, and hardship. peerReviewed

Major life changes may cause an autobiographical rupture and a need to work on one’s narrative identity. This article introduces a new qualitative interview methodology originally developed to facilitate 10 prostate cancer patients and five spouses in the (re)creation of their life narratives in the context of a series of interventive interviews conducted over a timespan of several months. In “The Clip Approach” the interviewees’ words, phrases, and metaphors are reflected back in a physical form (“the Clips”) as visual artifacts that allow the interviewees to re-enter and re-consider their experience and life and re-construct their narratives concerning them. Honoring the interviewees as authors facilitates autobiographical reasoning, building a bridge between the past and the future, and embedding the illness experience as part of one’s life narrative. The Clip Approach provides new tools for both research and practice—potentially even a low-threshold psychosocial support method for various applicability areas.

Illnesses caused by a variety of micro- and macro- organisms can negatively affect individuals’ fitness, leading to the expectation that immunity is under positive selection. However, immune responses are costly and individuals must trade-off their immune response with other fitness components (e.g. survival or reproductive success) meaning that individuals with intermediate response may have the greatest overall fitness. Such a process might be particularly acute in species with strong sexual selection because the condition-dependence of male secondary sexual-traits might lead to striking phenotypic differences amongst males of different immune response levels. We tested whether there is selection on immune response by survival and reproduction in yearling and adult male black grouse (Lyrurus tetrix) following an immune challenge with a novel antigen and tested the hypothesis that sexual signals and body mass are honest signals of the immune response. We show that yearling males with highest immune response to these challenges had higher survival, but the reverse was true for adults. Adults with higher responses had highest mass loss and adult males with intermediate immune response had highest mating success. Tail length was related to baseline response in adults and more weakly in yearlings. Our findings reveal the complex fitness consequences of mounting an immune response across age classes. Such major differences in the direction and magnitude of selection in multiple fitness components is an alternative route underpinning the stabilising selection of immune responses with an intermediate immune response being optimal. peerReviewed

Tutkimme tässä metodologisesti painottuneessa artikkelissamme, millainen kerronnan resurssi maisema on. Kertomuksen tutkimuksen näkökulma yhdistyy artikkelissa sosiaalitieteelliseen elämäkertatutkimukseen. Tarkastelemme maisemaa kerronnan resurssina Elämän konkari -kirjoituskilpailuun osallistuneiden 60-65-vuotiaiden eli kolmatta ikää elävien omaelämäkerrallisissa teksteissä. Lähestyimme aineistoa teorialähtöisesti hyödyntäen David Hermanin (2009a) neljää kerronnallisuuden ulottuvuutta: tilanteisuutta, ajallisuutta, juonellisia käännekohtia ja kokemuksellisuutta. Tilanteisuutta rakennetaan aineistossa yksityiskohtaisina maisemaan tai fyysiseen ympäristöön liittyvinä ankkureina, jotka valottavat lukijalle kerrontatilannetta tai tapahtumien yksityiskohtia. Ajallisuus ilmenee ilmauksina siitä, kuinka kauan kertomuksen tapahtumat kestävät ja miten suuren tilan tapahtumat saavat tekstistä. Ajallisuus voi olla myös merkki siitä, mikä kertomuksen maailmassa on kertojalle tärkeää. Juonellisia käännekohtia tarkasteltaessa käy ilmi, että kerronnassa hyödynnetään sosiaalisia ja normaaleina pidettyjä käsikirjoituksia, joiden vastakohtina esitetään erilaisia käännekohtia tai ”häiriöitä” asioiden tai suhteiden normaalissa kulussa. Kokemuksellisuus kerronnan ulottuvuutena ilmentää eri tilanteiden läpielämistä ja sitä, millaista on tuntea kokemuksellisuuden subjektiivinen luonne (Herman 2009a). Aineistossa kokemuksellisuus näkyy muun muassa tunnetilojen, eroottisten maisemakuvausten ja runojen muodossa. Maisema on aineistossa usein toistuva, monikerroksinen ja rikas kerronnan keino. Analyysi paljasti maiseman yllätyksellisiä ja henkilökohtaisia kerroksia tuoden esiin myös kätkettyjä maisemia. Landscape as a Narrative Resource in Autobiographical Texts In this methodologically focused article, we combine the perspectives of narrative studies and autobiographical research in social sciences. We study landscape as a narrative resource by analysing autobiographical stories. The stories were written by so-called third agers, individuals aged between 60 and 65, who had participated in the Elämän konkari writing competition. Our theory-driven data analysis benefitted from David Herman's (2009a) four narrative dimensions: situatedness, event sequencing, world disruption and lived experience. Situatedness was constructed in the research material with details of landscape or physical environment, which functioned as anchors to the event of telling the story or to the events being told. Event sequencing consists of expressions on how long the told events lasted and how much space they have been given in the story. Event sequencing can signify the importance of the told events for the narrator. When looking at disruption in the world narrated, the analysed narratives appear to rely on scripts that are understood as normal. As opposed to these normal scripts, narrators present disruptions and junctures that deviate from the normal scripts and course of events. Lived experiences embody how the events and situations are lived and what is the feel of the subjective nature of experience (Herman 2009a). In the data, lived experiences are presented for example as emotions, erotic landscapes and poems. In our data, landscape is a recurring, multi-layered and rich narrative resource. The analysis revealed surprising and personal layers of landscapes as well as hidden landscapes. peerReviewed

The focus of this study was to examine the constructions of the educable subject of the lifelong learning (LLL) narrative in the narrative life histories of adult students at general upper secondary school for adults (GUSSA). In this study lifelong learning has been defined as a cultural narrative on education, “a system of political thinking” that is not internally consistent, but has contradictory themes embedded within it (Billig et al., 1988). As earlier research has shown and this study also confirms, the LLL narrative creates differences between those who are included and those who fall behind and are excluded from the learning society ideal. Educability expresses socially constructed interpretations on who benefit from education and who should be educated and how. The presupposition in this study has been that contradictions between the LLL narrative and the so-called traditional constructions of educability are likely to be constructed as the former relies on the all-inclusive interpretation of educability and the latter on the meritocratic model of educating individuals based on their innate abilities. The school system continues to uphold the institutionalized ethos of educability that ranks students into the categories “bright”, “mediocre”, and “poor” (Räty & Snellman, 1998) on the basis of their abilities, including gender-related differences as well as differences based on social class. Traditional agerelated norms also persist, for example general upper secondary education is normatively completed in youth and not in adulthood, and the formal learning context continues to outweigh both non-formal and informal learning. Moreover, in this study the construction of social differences in relation to educability and, thereafter unequal access to education has been examined in relation to age, social class, and gender. The biographical work of the research participants forms a peephole that permits the examination of the dilemmatic nature of the constructions of educability in this study. Formal general upper secondary education in adulthood is situated on the border between the traditional and the LLL narratives on educability: participation in GUSSA inevitably means that one’s ability and competence as a student and learner becomes reassessed through the assessment criteria maintained by schools, whereas according to the principles of LLL everyone is educable; everyone is encouraged to learn throughout their lives regardless of age, social class, or gender. This study is situated in the field of adult education, sociology of education, and social psychological research on educability, having also been informed by feminist studies. Moreover, this study contributes to narrative life history research combining the structural analysis of narratives (Labov & Waletzky, 1997), i.e. mini-stories within life history, with the analysis of the life histories as structural and thematic wholes and the creation of coherence in them; thus, permitting both micro and macro analyses. On accounting for the discontinuity created by participation in general upper secondary school study in adulthood and not normatively in youth, the GUSSA students construct coherence in relation to their ability and competence as students and learners. The seven case studies illuminate the social differences constructed in relation to educability, i.e. social class, gender, age, and the “new category of student and learner”. In the data of this study, i.e. 20 general upper secondary school adult graduates’ narrative life histories primarily generated through interviews, two main coherence patterns of the adult educable subject emerge. The first performance-oriented pattern displays qualities that are closely related to the principles of LLL. Contrary to the principles of lifewide learning, however, the documentation of one’s competence through formal qualifications outweighs non-formal and informal learning in preparation for future change and the competition for further education, professional careers, and higher social positions. The second flexible learning pattern calls into question the status of formal, especially theoretical and academically oriented education; inner development is seen as more important than such external signs of development – grades and certificates. Studying and learning is constructed as a hobby and as a means to a more satisfactory life as opposed to a socially and culturally valued serious occupation leading to further education and career development. Consequently, as a curious, active, and independent learner, this educable but not readily employable subject is pushed into the periphery of lifelong learning. These two coherence patterns of the adult educable subject illuminate who is to be educated and how. The educable and readily employable LLL subject is to participate in formal education in order to achieve qualifications for working life, whereas the educable but not employable subject may utilize lifewide learning for her/his own pleasure. Tutkimuksessani tarkastelen kompetentin koulutettavan subjektin rakentumista elinikäisen oppimisen näkökulmasta aikuislukiosta valmistuneiden narratiivisissa elämänhistorioissa. Elinikäinen oppiminen määrittyy työssäni kulttuuriseksi koulutuskertomukseksi, ”poliittisen ajattelun järjestelmäksi”, joka ei ole sisäisesti yhtenäinen, vaan johon sisältyy myös ristiriitoja. Vaikka elinikäinen oppiminen on kaikkialla yhteiskunnassa vaikuttava suuri pelastuskertomus, tämä tutkimus osaltaan vahvistaa, että kaikilla ei ole itsestään selvästi pääsyä oppimisyhteiskunnan ideaaliin. Koulutettavuus määrittyy työssäni tulkinnaksi siitä, kenellä on oikeus koulutukseen ja millaiseen koulutukseen. Työni lähtökohtana on koulutettavuuden tulkintoihin sisältyvä ristiriita elinikäiseen oppimiseen sisältyvän kaikkia koskevan koulutettavuuden ja meritokraattisen yksilön luonnollisiin kykyihin perustuvan koulutettavuuden välillä. Koulujärjestelmä ylläpitää institutionaalista koulutettavuuden eetosta, joka jakaa opiskelijat kykyjensä mukaisiin kategorioihin ”hyvät”, ”keskinkertaiset” ja ”huonot”. Koulutettavuuden eetokseen sisältyvät myös sukupuolen ja sosiaalisen aseman mukaiset julkilausumattomat erottelut. Niin ikään totutut ikäsidonnaiset odotukset tarjoavat normatiivisen mallin, jonka mukaan esimerkiksi lukio käydään nuorena eikä aikuisuudessa. Elinikäisen oppimisen kertomus puolestaan korostaa myös muodollisen koulujärjestelmän ulkopuolella ja myöhemmällä iällä tapahtuvan koulutuksen arvoa. Aikuislukio sijoittuu niin kutsutun perinteisen ja elinikäisen oppimisen koulutettavuuden tulkintojen rajapinnalle, ja oma kyky opiskelijana ja oppijana tulee uudelleen arvioitavaksi koulun ylläpitämin arviointikriteerein. Myös oman koulutustien epäjatkuvuutta joudutaan arvioimaan ja selittämään. Tarkastelen tutkimuksessani, miten nämä perusdilemmat jäsentävät aikuisopiskelijoiden koulutuselämänhistorioiden merkityksenantoa ja elämänkerrallista työtä. Tutkimus sijoittuu aikuiskasvatuksen alueelle ja edustaa teoreettisesti ja metodologisesti naistutkimuksesta vaikutteita saanutta narratiivista elämänhistoriatutkimusta. Tutkimuksella on kytkentöjä kasvatussosiologiaan ja sosiaalipsykologiseen koulutettavuustutkimukseen. Aineiston analyysissä yhdistyy Labovin ja Waletzkyn rakennemallia hyödyntävä elämänhistoriaan sisältyvien narratiivien lähiluku sekä jatkuvuuden (koherenssin) rakentumisen analyysi elämänhistorian kokonaisuudessa, joka mahdollistaa sekä mikro- että makrotason analyysin. Aikuislukiosta valmistuneet opiskelijat rakentavat elämänhistoriallista jatkuvuutta suhteessa omaan kykyynsä opiskella ja oppia selittäessään koulutustiensä epäjatkuvuutta. Seitsemän tapaustutkimusta valottaa koulutettavuuteen liittyvien sosiaalisten erojen rakentumista suhteessa sosiaaliluokkaan, sukupuoleen, ikään ja ”uuteen opiskelijan ja oppijan kategoriaan”. Kahdenkymmenen pääasiassa haastatteluin tuotetun aikuislukiosta valmistuneen opiskelijan narratiivisista elämänhistorioista on tulkittavissa kaksi koulutettavan subjektin jatkuvuuden rakentumisen mallia. Ensimmäisessä suoritussuuntautuneessa mallissa jatkuvuus rakentuu läheisessä suhteessa elinikäisen oppimisen periaatteisiin. Kuitenkin vastoin elämänlevyisen oppimisen periaatteita oman pätevyyden osoittaminen muodollisesta koulutuksesta saaduin tutkinnoin rakentuu tärkeämmäksi kuin esimerkiksi työpaikkojen ja kansalaisopistojen kurssit tai arkielämän oppiminen. Toinen joustavan oppimisen malli taas kyseenalaistaa teoreettisen ja akateemisen oppimisen arvon: oma kehittyminen rakentuu tärkeämmäksi kuin koulutuksen ulkoiset tunnusmerkit, arvosanat ja tutkinnot. Tällä uteliaalla, aktiivisella ja itsenäisellä oppijalla ei kuitenkaan ole pääsyä elinikäisen oppimisen ideaaliin, vaan oppiminen mahdollistuu harrastuksena ja keinona tyydyttävämpään elämään. Se ei rakennu yhteiskunnallisesti merkityksellisenä toimintana, jonka päämääränä olisivat jatko-opinnot ja urakehitys. ”Suoritussuuntautuneen” ja ”joustavan oppimisen” mallit kuvaavat, ketä kannattaa kouluttaa ja miten. Valmius työllistyä on tutkimukseni mukaan oleellinen osa elinikäisen oppimisen ideaalia. Koulutettavan ja työllistettävissä olevan elinikäisen oppimisen subjektin tulee osallistua formaaliin koulutukseen saavuttaakseen tutkintoja työelämää varten, kun taas koulutettava mutta ei työllistettävissä oleva subjekti voi oppia elämänlevyisesti omaksi ilokseen.

Miten iäkkäät naiset kuvaavat elämäänsä? Miten elämänkerronnassa rakentuu suhtautumistapa vanhenemiseen? Terveystieteiden lisensiaatti Sirkka-Liisa Palomäki tutkii väitöskirjassaan vanhuutta ja vanhenemista iäkkäiden naisten kerronnan kautta. Lisäksi hän tulkitsee, millainen kuva välittyy tämän sukupolven naisen elämästä ja oman aikamme vanhuudesta. Kerronnoissa on mukana elämän tapahtumia, kokemuksia, tunteita ja toiveita kertojasukupolven ajan kulttuurin ja historian taustoittamana. Kerronnat on tutkimuksessa luokiteltu niiden keskeisen elämänjuonteen perusteella. Kerronnoista on myös paljastettavissa ymmärrystä luova yhteys nykyiseen elämänvaiheeseen ja tapaan suhtautua omaan vanhenemiseen.Vanhuuden vaihe näyttäytyy jopa elämää laajentavana ja vapauttavana (emansipoivana), kun taustalla on maatalon naisen tiukka työn ja velvoitteiden täyttämä elämä. Naisten kerrontaan liittyvät kuvaukset työstä ja toimeliaisuudesta, ja elämä jatkuu aktiivisena suhtautumisena omaan vanhenemiseen.Joukosta erottuvat ne naiset, jotka ovat eläneet sukupolveensa verrattuna itsenäisempää elämää. Heidän elämäänsä leimaavat monenlaisista vaikeista elämänkohtaloista huolimatta pärjäämisen tunne sekä rohkea ja usein humoristinen elämänasenne. Suhdetta vanhenemiseen kuvaa nuorekas mieli.Hyvin uskonnollinen elämä ja hyvin epäitsenäinen naisen elämä kantavat molemmat rauhalliseen vanhuuteen. Menetysten ja toimeentulon huolien täyttämä kova elämä on vaihtunut vanhuuden vaiheessa äärimmäiseen sallivuuteen. Eniten huolta, jopa pelkoa tulevaisuutta ja omaa vanhenemista kohtaan tuntevat ne naiset, jotka ovat hoitaneet läheistään pitkään, loppuun saakka. Heidän suhdettaan vanhenemiseen leimaa herkkä, jopa arka mieli. Lisäksi useiden kertojien nykyisyyttä vaikeuttavat kehon vanhenemismuutokset, toimintojen hidastuminen ja väsyminen, joihin elämänhaluinen mieli etsii tasapainoa.Iäkkäät kertojat ovat tietoisia aikamme negatiivisesta vanhuuskeskustelusta, joka pahimmillaan kutistaa vanhuuden hoivakuormaksi. Kysymykset siitä, mihin joutuu ja kuka hoitaa, ilmentävät kerronnassa maaseudun hoivaperinteeseen tullutta katkosta.Elämänkertomus ei vielä riittävästi näy vanhustyön ammattikäytännöissä eikä siten lisää vanhuuden ymmärtämistä. Sen sijaan totutut tavat luokitella ja sairaskertomus määrittävät edelleen liiaksi vanhan ihmisen elämää. The purpose of this research was to describe, interpret and comprehend old age and ageing through narration of the elderly women. The participants of the research were ten women at the ages of 72-92, who told about their experiences and life events during two interview sessions. The elderly women of the research lived independently and the background of most of them was agrarian culture. Narration opened the context of interpretation of female life of that generation, the current old age and, in addition, how relation to one’s own ageing was constructed. The approach of the study was directed by a narrative and constructive view. According to the first interview was drawn a life chart, and by which the second interview was directed. The interviews were taped and written word by word, so were also the observations. The data was analyzed both thematically and with the help of ideas of the narrative analysis.In the results time and meanings outlined narration. The past was dealt with the comprehension of the present and the present with teaching of the past, at the same time when narration joined and became a part of the future. The narrated life and ageing was examined at different levels both at the individual, existential-ontological level and at the social and cultural level. Biographies could be divided into five different life themes, which were described by Life as fate and one’s own choices, Hard life, Life as caretaker and nurse, Life as a gift and Active life. The relations to one’s ageing were constructed through those themes, and were characterized by a youngish, permissive, sensitive, peaceful and active mind towards life and ageing. In many cases narration got dissonance from the feelings and symptoms of the body and the mind attached to life. These, however, were joined in the wholeness of experiences. In the same way, concerning the image of old age, the positive side of the subjective old age was contradictory to the objective, social old age, and even to the fear of it.The biographical old age was constructed in narration as meanings in the present time and furthermore, as relation to oneself and the wholeness of one’s own life. The results of this research make is possible to contribute into the discussion about the different way of narrative gerontology to define old age and ageing, but the advantage of the approach will also meet an elderly narrator.
